Major step taken in YOSC rescue bid PROGRESS is being made in the campaign to save Yate Outdoor Sports Complex for local clubs.

A community interest company is on the cards for the facility, which will allow its continued use by sportsmen and women when not needed by Brimsham Green School.

YOSC is sited next to the comprehensive and under a longrunning arrangement is home to the likes of athletes and hockey players outside school hours.

But the trust that manages the facilities for the community will no longer do so after October as part of cost cutting measures

by South Gloucestershire Council.

Yate Town Council, in conjunction with Yate and District Athletics Club and other users, is working on a deal that will lead to responsibility for the management being transferred to the local community from November.

In an important step in the process, it was agreed by South Gloucestershire’s communities committee to terminate the

funding of community sports provision after October 31 but to approve the transfer of more than £134,000 for future maintenance and repairs of Yate

Outdoor Sports Complex.

Terms for the proposed leasing arrangement now have to be finalised so the switch can take place.

Campaign launched to keep youngsters out of danger quarry lakes SECURITY has been increased at Chipping Sodbury quarry to keep youngsters out of the site this summer.

Operator Hanson is supporting the Mineral Products Association (MPA) in an operation to warn of the dangers of swimming in lakes at the bottom of quarries.

The Stay Safe campaign is part of wider efforts involving organisations such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to make people aware of the risk in taking a dip in any open water, including reservoirs, rivers, canals and lakes.

In 2013 there were 381 accidental water-related fatalities in the UK, many occurring at inland water sites.

A 13-year-old boy who died while swimming in a disused quarry in Lancashire was among 15 people who died in quarry lakes during the past two years.

Youngsters ignoring warning signs and getting into quarry sites in South Gloucestershire have caused regular problems for operators, especially during warm weather.

The site causing most difficulties for Hanson recently is its dormant Tytherington quarry, near Thornbury, but there have also been problems at Chipping Sodbury.

Hanson spokesman David Weeks said: “We are fully supporting the MPA and will be campaigning to keep children out of our sites this summer.

“We have a large quarry at Chipping Sodbury, parts of which are water-filled, and we will be stepping up security here at evenings and weekends.”

Water in quarry lakes is extremely cold, even in mid-summer, as well as being very deep.

The MPA said the effect on the body of sudden immersion in such cold water could have serious consequences for even a strong swimmer.

There are also other hazards, from concealed obstacles that can injure or entangle swimmers, unexpected currents and unstable edges, making it easy to fall in and difficult to get out of the water.

Steve Harris, whose teenage son Jay died of heart failure after falling into the cold water of a quarry lake, said: “Jay did not appreciate the risks that he was exposing himself to. If he had, he may still have been with us today.”

Nigel Jackson, chief executive of the MPA, said: “Tragically, 15 people have died in quarry lakes over the last two years, the majority of who have been young men engaged in activities they perceived to be harmless fun.”

THE first woman diocesan bishop in the Church of England has been consecrated, with the Right Rev Rachel Treweek becoming the Bishop of Gloucester.

Many well-wishers from the diocese, which includes Chipping Sodbury, made the journey to Canterbury Cathedral for the historic service, which was led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

During the service she was presented with her episcopal ring – designed and made for Bishop Rachel by jeweller Paul Spurgeon - and pectoral cross.

The cross was created from bullet shells found on the battlefields of Mozambique’s civil war and represents her involvement with a link with the country for a number of years while an archdeacon in London.

Bishop Rachel said: “I am excited and full of anticipation and joy for what lies ahead as I begin my ministry as Bishop of Gloucester.

“I have been with people through the joys and pains of their lives and it is these experiences that I will reflect upon as I take up this new role.”

Before ordination, Bishop Rachel trained as a speech and language therapist, a role she practised for more than six years.

Ideas put forward to make Yate road safer PLANS are being drawn up to try and cut accidents and hazards at two sites on Rodford Way in Yate.

One of the locations is where the road meets Abbotswood, while the other is further along at the offset junction between Shire Way, Rodford Way and Sundridge Park.

Ideas currently being considered include banning U-turns on Rodford Way near the Abbotswood junction, including putting a short length of central island in the mouth of Abbotswood.

An advisory 20 mph limit on Rodford Way, near the Kelston Close junction, is also proposed at school opening and closing times.

Further ideas include changing the slip lane priorities at the offset junction and making the cycle lanes more obvious.

The Wurzels to star in Yate Shopping Centre anniversary weekend WEST Country favourites The Wurzels will lead Yate Shopping Centre’s 50th anniversary celebrations during a weekend of events to help bring its summer programme to a close.

The band will be supported by a host of tribute acts performing music by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Michael Jackson, Buddy Holly and Robbie Williams.

Entertainment will start at 11am on both Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, with the tribute bands appearing on the opening day.

The Wurzels are set to be on stage at 2pm on the Sunday, following performances by community music and dance groups and the Avon Fire and Rescue Wind Band.

There will also be an anniversary cake to be cut and a new mural to be unveiled, while a beach party will feature

inflatables, a bouncy castle, children’s favourite characters and a large slide.

Andrew Lowrey, the shopping centre manager, said: “This is without doubt the largest event we have ever put on in our 50 year history and will be something to remember.

“We are encouraging the traders to get involved and local schools will be unveiling the latest mural, created 50 years after the first one, which is now sited near the entrance to the Tesco Extra store.”

Mr Lowrey said activities running throughout the school summer holidays would lead to

the celebration weekend, from the beach in the centre square to appearances by fireman Sam and Norman Price on August 4, an assault course on August 11 and a steel band on August 13.

The final event is set to be a craft workshop on August 27.

Mr Lowrey said: “I am incredibly proud how my team organises these successful events year after year. They are an important part of our annual activities, free to customers and provide great entertainment to our community.”

CHIPPING Sodbury’s Nick Gauntlett is among a line-up of leading names taking part in a quartet of championship classes at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park.

The rider has El Grado entered for the feature British Open, while Carden Earl Grey is set to run in the Smith and Williamson British Intermediate Championships.

El Grado has only been with Gauntlett for the current British eventing season, having been bought in Australia.

He took him to Badminton in May but withdrew after the dressage and later rode him at Tattersalls in Ireland.

Carden Earl Grey also went to Tattersalls and jumped clear across country and in the show jumping arena.

The horse now returns to Gatcombe with a year’s more experience since his last run at the Gloucestershire festival in 2014.

Gatcombe, taking place from August 7-9, will also host the Dodson and Horrell British Novice Championship and a new national restricted novice class – the TopSpec challenge for the Corinthian Cup. Last year’s British Open winner, Andrew Nicholson, will be back to defend his title, while former victors William Fox-Pitt, Pippa Funnell and Oliver Townend will also be in action.

Captain Mark Phillips, who has designed the cross-country courses, said: “Winning a national title at the festival is never easy and it will be interesting to see who stands on the winner’s podium at the end of each competition.”

August, 2015 YATE’S court building could be closed as part of a major review, with cases being transferred to Bristol.

It cost £286,000 in the last financial year to run North Avon Magistrates’ Court in Kennedy Way but it was only used at 28 per cent capacity.

The review is considering the future of courtrooms nationwide and for those in Yate, survival is linked to the outcome for the courts in Bath.

They will be examined together as Bristol’s magistrates’ courts would be unable to accommodate the workload from both.

Responses to a consultation running until October 8 will be considered before a decision is taken on whether either North Avon or Bath will close.

Sandra Aston, who is responsible for managing the HM Courts and Tribunals Service in the South West, said she had identified buildings where the ability to provide an efficient service had been compromised by unsatisfactory facilities, low usage and poor value for money.

She said: “I have carefully considered the impact of the proposed changes, both locally and across the South West. This consultation is an opportunity for the public to use their knowledge of their local areas to review and help us with our proposals.”

Changes will affect staff and some people could have to make longer journeys to get to hearings, including witnesses and volunteer support staff as well as defendants.

Ms Aston said she was especially committed to working with rural communities to provide alternative ways for the public to access the justice system.

She said: “These could include the use of civic or other public buildings for occasional

Yate’s court building dates from 1982, has five courtrooms, 13 staff and deals with adult and youth criminal cases from across South Gloucestershire.

Although generally in reasonable condition, Ms Aston said significant investment was required in the heating and lighting systems.

There are also 12 custody cells and one courtroom has video link facilities for witnesses to give their evidence, although there is no prison video link.

AFFORDABLE homes on the Barnhill Quarry site in Chipping Sodbury are being offered to people who want to take up shared ownership of the properties.

PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire could get a second crematorium under plans being drawn up for a site on the outskirts of Thornbury.

The scheme is still at the development stage but is proposed for land behind the cemetery in Alveston.

Seating for up to 400 in a ceremonial hall is included in the scheme, Westerleigh Crematorium which has been prepared by architects Lewis Foster Lewis for Thornbury Crematorium Ltd. Currently, South Gloucestershire’s only crematorium is at Westerleigh, where operators last year won consent to build a second chapel and bereavement hospitality suite to cope with an increasing number of services. In 2013 it accommodated 2,278 cremations.

Other crematoria are at Canford in Westbury-on-Trym, South Bristol and Gloucester.

A community event has been organised for Thursday, August 6, to give people the chance to find out more about the plans from the professional team behind the scheme.

It will be held from 4pm-7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall, Greenhill, Alveston, and comments received will be used to develop the plan further. People can also find out more from a website www.thornburycrematorium.co.uk running from August 3.

Land for the crematorium is off Alveston Hill and proposals include a tree-lined entrance, parking, gardens of rest and a refreshment area.

Russell Lewis, of Lewis Foster Lewis, said: “Our vision is to create a place where local people can hold cremation services in a beautiful environment, looking out across a landscape that is familiar to them.

“The columbarium, wild cemetery and gardens of rest will create a light, safe and welcoming place for families and friends to visit and to return whenever they choose, to sit with their thoughts and memories.”

Ofsted finds happy and confident children at Yate pre-school A PRE-SCHOOL in Yate has received a rating of good after an inspection by Ofsted.

The Phase 5 Pre-School in Kelston Close has been running since 1998 and is run by a committee that employs 14 staff, including a manager who is a qualified teacher.

It is open on weekdays in term time and when the inspection was carried out, had nearly 50 youngsters on roll.

The inspector said the children enjoyed learning through experiences that held their interest, meaning they were active learners who enthusiastically took part in a wide range of activities.

They were happy and confident and good procedures helped them settle quickly and feel secure.

Staff provided good support for children with different needs and abilities and there was praise for the relationships they built with parents and other professionals.

For the third consecutive year, the Green Flag Community Award has been presented to the Wapley Bushes Conservation Group, which manages the site on behalf of Dodington Parish Council. It was also the only project in South Gloucestershire to receive the accolade this year.

The award is given to recognise high quality public open spaces, which are judged on strict criteria such as horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

Parish councillor Paul Hulbert, who is a regular volunteer on the site, said: “We are very pleased to have achieved this important award for the third year running. We find the judge’s visit and feedback very useful as input to our

“The award is a real tribute to our volunteers, who put in hundreds of man-hours each year to maintain the reserve and the orchard all year round.

Mr Hulbert said new volunteers were always welcome, with the next work morning planned for Sunday, September 13. Anyone interested in

Concorde museum set for take-off after clearance given for £14 million pound project A PERMANENT home for Concorde is a step closer after formal planning consent was given for an aerospace museum and learning centre.

The £14 million project will allow the Bristol Aero Collection to finally be displayed in Filton once two listed hangars on the edge of the now closed Filton airfield have been transformed for the visitor attraction.

Concorde 216 – the last of the supersonic fleet to fly – will be at the heart of the museum and on the site where the aircraft was manufactured.

Lloyd Burnell, project director at the Bristol Aero Collection Trust, said: “We are delighted to have received planning permission for this very exciting project, which will tell the stories of the people and display the products of the region’s world-class aerospace industry.

“It will inspire the next generation of engineers and provide a memorable day out for

The museum scheme was originally given approval by

councillors earlier this year, subject to completion of a legal agreement involving use of the site by emergency helicopters.

As part of the redevelopment of the airfield, an alternative location for the helicopter operations base was found in Almondsbury and planning permission was recently given for it to be established.

Teenagers get busy to help Yate school’s allotments A TEAM of students are helping improve the allotments at Culverhill School in Abbotswood, Yate.

The teenagers from the town’s Brimsham Green School and the Castle School in Thornbury are involved in the National Citizen Scheme (NCS), which helps youngsters develop their communication and life skills.

Aged 16 and 17, they offered to carry out a community project at Culverhill, where teachers jumped at the chance of using their talents to raise money and get the allotment area upgraded.

Culverhill is a special school for pupils aged 7-16 and staff wanted to make the site better for wheelchair users, as well as improving the condition of some of the raised beds used to grow vegetables.

So far the NCS students have raised money at a family fun day at Yate Heritage Centre and by serving afternoon tea at St Mary’s Church.

Local companies have also donated items to help the project, including B&Q, J Hollisters DIY Store, and Tesco Metro.

Touchwood Services also laid a new path.

Teacher Carolyn Cook said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the companies that donated time and money to

this project and to a marvellous group of nine young people who made this happen.”

The students’ efforts include repairing a damaged raised bed, carrying out garden maintenance, installing a bughouse and

planting a wild flower garden.

Further fund raising is planned to cover the cost of future projects, such as a small pond, a greenhouse heater and shelving for a new poly tunnel.

South America skills final beckons for top apprentice Mike ENGINEERING apprentice Mike Watson is heading for Brazil after winning a place in the UK squad for WorldSkills Sao Paulo.

Mike, 21, of Westerleigh, secured the trip after three days of intense competition at a selection trial, having already excelled in the WorldSkills UK national event.

He was one of two apprentices from GKN Aerospace in Filton to be chosen to travel to South America for what is the biggest international skills competition in the world.

It is held every two years and involves some 1,000 young people from around the globe competing for medals in more than 40 different skills.

Mike and Steven Castle were selected in the computer numerical control (CNC) milling category and since their selection last summer, have spent a further 11 months training for the final.

Mike said: “Being selected is an incredible honour and something I’ve been working

towards for more than two years.

I have spent every spare minute training for the competition and I’m determined to give it my all.”

Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall met Mike ahead of the final to give his congratulations and wish him well.

Mr Hall said: “Mike is an inspiration to future generations of the UK’s workforce. His achievements prove that apprenticeships can lead to great opportunities and successful careers for individuals and businesses.”

Progress continues in fight to save Yate sports complex for the community A MAJOR step has been taken in the campaign to keep Yate Outdoor Sports Complex (YOSC) open to local clubs.

Spending cuts had threatened the facility, which is next to Brimsham Green School and made available under a dual-use arrangement to clubs and other users when not needed by pupils.

Circadian Trust, which also runs South Gloucestershire Council’s leisure centres, manages the facilities outside school hours. But its contract runs out at the end of October, along with funding for continued community use.

The council will save money by not renewing the contract but wanted to make new arrangements to allow that use to carry on.

Yate Town Council has been working with Yate and District Athletics Club and other users on a rescue package that will see responsibility transferred to the local community, with progress being made to meet the target of November 1.

At a recent South Gloucestershire communities committee, it was agreed to terminate the funding of community sports provision after October 31 but to approve the transfer of more than £134,000 for future maintenance and repairs of the facility.

A report to the committee said: “Subject to agreement of terms for the proposed leasing arrangement, Yate Town Council has indicated that it will work with Yate Athletics Club with a view to it becoming a community interest company and taking over

YOSC provides full athletics facilities and has an all-weather surface as well as a club house.

Among users are national level athletes, disabled athletes, schoolchildren, toddlers and the retired.

Council staff could move to Yate under office overhaul review SOME of South Gloucestershire Council’s back office work could be switched to Yate from Kingswood as part of an efficiency drive.

The Conservative administration said it was pressing ahead with a pledge to give value for money by consulting on the use of empty space at both the council’s main Badminton Road offices in Yate and at Kingswood Civic Centre.

Council leader Matthew Riddle said savings had to be made and the authority had to be as efficient as possible, although he said the protection of frontline services came ahead of filling vacant office space.

He said: “Both the civic centre and the Badminton Road offices have lots of unused space and it is wasteful of taxpayers’ money to operate that way.

“We are now consulting our staff and opposition council groups on how we can best use the space we have and see if

there is room for any savings.

“We have made no firm decisions at this point. However, whatever decision is made, we are 100 per cent committed

to maintaining a presence in Kingswood.

“Frontline services will continue and we are particularly committed to ensuring that

After another very early start on the Sunday morning, the team made good progress and used their training and determination to arrive at the finish line at 12.17pm, beating the previous Zeus record by over an hour. In Ten Tors tradition, the team finished in fancy dress – Bristol Rovers jester hats – proudly carrying the Zeus Explorers’ flag through a guard of honour formed by other scout groups at the event.

After a well deserved pasty, the team members were presented with their individual medals and team certificate in front of a wall of cameras.

Innovation at the fore in annual school challenge STUDENTS at Chipping Sodbury and Brimsham Green schools tested their design and development skills at the annual Young Innovator Competition.

Nearly 60 pupils were involved in the challenge, held in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, competing in six categories.

They were assessed by a panel of judges consisting of representatives of local businesses, among them past winner Roxanne Pollard, who now works at award winning Wotton-underEdge engineering company Renishaw.

Open to students aged 16-18, the categories were graphics, food, textiles, senior product design, product design and young innovator.

Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club organised the event, which saw Dominic Pilston from Brimsham Green School taking the overall award for his single camp bed tent.

Maria Betts from Chipping Sodbury School won the senior product design title with her pop-up book for children with special needs.

Other winners included Laura Coles in the food design category; Ellie Finch, textiles; Robert King, graphics, and Georgia Young, product design.

Organiser Keith Pattison said: “The work entered by the students was outstanding and the ideas and presentation were first class.

“Both schools entered a strong range of products and projects, many representing two years of hard work by the students.”

Old tin sales pay for tools to Africa COALPIT Heath residents Shelley Wright and Tracey Morris have discovered a novel way of raising money for charity – selling old biscuit, tobacco, confectionery and motoroil tins on eBay. The pair volunteer with the Bristol branch of the charity Tools for Self Reliance. The group collects old tools and sewing machines, refurbishes them and transports them, via the charity’s headquarters in Hampshire, to partners in Africa who train local people and distribute the kits. In the last four years they have completed six projects and sent 92 kits of tools.

Tracey Morris, the project coordinator for the region, said, ‘People donate the tools for us to refurbish and send to the charity’s partners in Africa, but we have to raise the funds to cover the shipping costs and to train the recipients to use the tools too.’

Part of this money comes from selling old tins on eBay. The

tins are donated along with the tools, and after a quick clean are listed for sale.

Shelley Wright is the eBayer who sells the tins, ‘Most of the tins we sell fetch under £5, many only 99p, but every now and then we find a tin which is really sought after.’ she says, ‘It has taken a long time but we have recently reached £3000 of tins sales.’

Each kit costs about £40 to ship to Africa, so the old tins have paid for 75 kits to be sent to artisans in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Hobbs House help Shaun FAMILY bakers Hobbs House are making biscuits to help charity after being appointed as the official Shaun in the City supplier. Their efforts will help to raise funds for The Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity.

Teaming up with the charity for the duration of the trail, Hobbs are baking around 1000 biscuits every day with a donation from each sale being donated to the Grand Appeal.

Entertaining ourselves to death?

T

HIS month I got yet another ‘Unbeatable Broadband and TV Package’ offer in the post. As usual there were the tick boxes to compare with other hot deals on the market.

Not only was this bundle faster and cheaper, but I could record three different channels at the same time, whilst watching a fourth pre-recorded programme!

Impressive technology indeed.

But it did raise a question about the lives we live in our society, and how we fill them. I had to wonder exactly when I was meant to watch those three recorded programmes, amidst the constant stream of new things to watch and record.

How much of your life is lived, second-hand, in front of a screen? How many of your own attitudes and opinions simply reflect what you see and hear online? Has our all-

pervasive entertainment culture encouraged us to be thoughtful of others, to form deep friendships, to aspire to make a difference… or has it left us self-absorbed, small-minded and ultimately hungry inside? Above all, what do we not have time for, because our time is so filled with those pre-recorded programmes that we have to fit in?

Countless channels jostle for your attention. But have they squeezed out the most important thing of all? The vast universe and the intricate wonder of life did not come ‘from nowhere, by accident’. Human creativity points beyond itself to a great Creator. This Creator has “determined the times set for people and the exact places where they should live”. Why? “So that people would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him”. But He has also warned of times when people

will be “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful… unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal and rash, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God”. Those words, written almost two thousand years ago, are an uncomfortably accurate prediction of the dark side of Western culture, often displayed on our screens… for our entertainment.

Could it be that those pre-recorded programmes are robbing you of the most valuable thing that you have – the time to seek, reach out for, and find the One who made you to know Him? Or will your final, deathbed regret be that you didn’t watch enough TV? Phil Heaps Grace Church Yate

Festival cycle ride attracts record numbers ORGANISERS are celebrating a record breaking Chipping Sodbury festival cycle ride as 90 riders took to a 12-mile course on the final day of the annual event.

Volunteers from the U3A cycling group ensured that cyclists enjoyed a safe and trouble free ride. Organiser Bob Keen said; “the three routes were arranged to suit all abilities and we estimate that more than 1200 miles were covered during the day”.

Sodbury Deputy Mayoress Wendy Whittle was on hand to wave off the 68 family riders that took part.

Cash boost from convenience store for Abbotswood community events A CONVENIENCE store in Yate has given £200 to the Abbotswood Action Group to help it stage events for the local community.

McColl’s operates its store in the Abbotswood shopping precinct and raised the cash through its Making a Difference Locally charity scheme.

That involves customers buying certain products in the shop and a percentage of the price going into a fund, from which a donation is made to a local charity that is chosen by the retailer and shoppers.

The action group benefited because of the integral part it plays in the community.

Store manager Tony Gardener said: “It is really wonderful that we have raised and donated

money for such a local and worthwhile cause.

“McColl’s has always been known to be charitable and we try our best to continually support the local neighbourhood in which we operate.”

Mary Wright, chairwoman of the action group, said: “The group is very grateful to McColl’s for allocating the award, which will go towards funding future community events such as Apple Day on October 2, the Christmas event on November 28 and other community events such as cleaning days.”

CHIPPING Sodbury’s green fingered fraternity are hoping for good news in September after a visit from the South West in Bloom judges.

Hoping for a repeat of their gold award winning performance in 2014, organisers of this years Sodbury in Bloom entry into decided to enter the main competition after a years absence.

The team also made four entries into the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards – a category introduced to recognise the work of small community groups.

The entries included the town centre, the Ridings and Millennium Garden, The Community Orchard and Waitrose, whose entry makes it the first supermarket in the south-west to enter for this particular award.

August- the time of glorious stone fruits and Summer holidays

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen. She says: “Welcome to my world of observations, comments on what’s happening and sometimes some halfbaked thoughts. Each month I’ll be giving you a seasonal recipe and some cooking tips to go with it”.

OR me, August is the month of luscious peaches, apricots and cherries; all of which work wonderfully in my recipe for this month. Plus it’s the height of the kids’ summer holidays. The great thing is that my recipe is one that any child over about 5 can easily do.

If you’re trying to encourage the kids to eat more fruit, it’s worth remembering that research shows that kids who are involved with the choosing of ingredients and then cooking them are much more likely to be less fussy eaters.

It’s also good to vary how the fruits are used, so here they’re baked which gives them a totally different texture. Getting kids to enjoy a variety of food isn’t just about taste, it’s also very much about texture. So don’t just serve them raw, try baking, stewing, frying with a little bit of butter or puréeing over ice cream.

Fresh Peach Crisp

A fruit crisp is an American dessert, a bit like our crumble, but crispier! I’ve come up with a healthier version using wholemeal flour and unrefined demerara sugar. The addition of the oats makes it slightly healthier, too. I’ve used fresh peaches here, but you can use apricots or cherries in the summer, plums or rhubarb when in season.

Serves 4 people Ingredients: For the crisp topping: Wholemeal plain flour – 60g (2 ½ oz) Jumbo porridge oats- 35g(1 ½ oz) Demarara sugar – 1 ½ tbsps Freshly grated nutmeg- about ¼ tsp Good pinch of sea salt Butter- 50g(2 oz) Ground almonds- 2 tbsps Almonds, flaked- 50g(2oz) For the base: Peaches- 6 Lemon juice- squeezed from ½ lemon Water- 2 tbsps Preheat the oven to 190c, or gas mark 5 Here’s what you do: 1. First prep the topping- In a large bowl mix the flour and oats together.

2. Rub the butter into the flour/ oats mixture until you have small pebbles of the mixture.

3. Stir in the ground almonds and the sugar and leave the bowl to one side.

4. Then prep the peachesHalve and twist, now you should be able to easily take the stone out and slice the peaches into ½ inch wedges.

5. Brush the peaches with the lemon juice.

6. Arrange the fruit in a medium size greased baking dish. (Pyrex is good so you can see the fruit).

7. Pour 2 tbsps of water over the fruit.

8. Scatter the topping over the peaches. Press down firmly using the back of a spoon.

9. Sprinkle the flaked almonds over the top.

6. Bake in the oven until the filling turns a deep golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.

7. Serve warm or at room temperature with good quality vanilla ice cream or custard in cooler weather Variations:

All sorts of summer fruits work well in this recipe, so ring the changes with apricots, or cherries, or combos of blueberry and apricot or peach and raspberry. You can also vary the nuts; try pecans, walnuts or macadamias instead of the flaked almonds.

Use other fruits in different seasons eg plums, apples or rhubarb.

View from Yate Heritage Centre Medieval Yate and Sodbury

I

N this remarkable year of medieval anniversaries we are reminded of Magna Carta (1215) and Agincourt (1415). Both events might be seen as purely secular events involving mighty nobles and kings. However, any major activity in Medieval Europe was underpinned by Christianity and the established Catholic Church.

Not surprisingly, our current exhibition covering Medieval Yate and Sodbury goes into some detail on the role of the local church during these times.

In short, the church was at the heart of medieval society and dominated the lives of everyone.

It dictated that people work six days a week excluding Sundays and Saint’s Days and what they ate. People were obliged to fast and abstain from eating meat for over half the days of the year.

What education existed was also the preserve of the church.

Power and Wealth But it was the immense power and wealth of the church, which paints such a contrast with today. Monasteries and abbey churches owned much of the

land around here as elsewhere.

Kingswood Abbey (near Wotton) owned land in Iron Acton. St Augustine’s in Bristol owned parts of Chipping Sodbury and in 1228, clashed with the Berkeley family over rights to remove woodland around Sodbury.

Society was a ready source of income for the church.

Parishioners gave 10% of their income or produce to the church.

The Rector of Yate received tithes from manors in Yate, Brinsham, Itchington and Tytherington.

The system worked as it served the interest of lords and church. Lords gave land and money to the church in exchange for prayers for their souls. In 1183, Roger De La Warre gave rental money to Holy Trinity Church of Wickwar. Similarly, Robert Stanshawe donated a bell to St Mary’s Yate, in 1471.

Assisted Dying Bill back at House of Commons

A

SSISTED dying is one of the most sensitive and emotionally charged debates of this generation. It is an issue which goes to the core not only of religion, but of our most basic human nature. It is also an issue on which I am required to vote in a few short months.

The Assisted Dying Bill has been brought back to the House of Commons as a Private Member’s Bill. As it is an issue of conscience I have the duty to vote according to my own feelings, and also according to the strength of feeling within the constituency. The government takes no position on the legislation.

The Bill would create a legal

pathway for terminally ill patients with less than six months to live to receive assistance to end their own lives. The patient would have to be mentally competent and be over 18 years old.

Those with mental illnesses or non-terminal illnesses would be excluded. No medical professional would be required to assist if they objected on moral grounds and the patient would have to administer the life-ending drugs themselves.

Instinctively I have great sympathy for terminally ill patients and, and I can honestly say I do not know how I would feel in their situation. Of the small few terminal patients I have met, I have been both shocked and heartened by their emotional

strength, and their determination to enjoy life.

I am undecided on this matter, and I would greatly appreciate constituents getting in touch to share their views. I am publishing a briefing note on my website which contains the basic arguments for and against the bill. There are valid arguments on both sides, and I am keen to hear local opinions and from people who are terminally ill or those who care for them.

Christmas already being planned in Chipping Sodbury WITH summer holidays foremost in most people’s minds, a small band of people are already planning for Christmas.

The committee organising this years Crib Festival at St John’s Church are calling for entries and asking that people start to think about making or loaning a crib for the event that starts on December 2.

One of the most eagerly awaited festivals in the Town’s calendar, around 5000 visitors view the exhibition of nearly 200 contemporary and traditional nativity cribs each year.

Nativity scenes gathered on loan from around the World are displayed alongside cribs designed and made by students from local schools.

IT might have been short lived, but in 1985 Chipping Sodbury briefly had its own stamps. It might have only been a light hearted prank, but some of them even found their final destinations.

It was jeweller Bruce Besant who came up with the idea to launch his own set of stamps. Mr Besant devised a set of postage stamps featuring views of the town and posted more than 100 in post boxes in Sodbury and Bristol.

Many stamps bearing the April 1st frank found their way into homes. Needless to say the Post Office were not impressed and seized several of the unofficial commemorative first day covers. announcing that they had been sent to HQ in London where a decision would be made on any further action against Mr Besant.

Earlier in the same year Mr Besant found himself in hot water for launching the Chipping Sodbury pound note. Local police confiscated copies of the note as they were discovered to be too similar to the legal tender and bore the Queen’s head.

To avoid a similar investigation Mr Besant substituted the Queen with the silhouette of his ten-yearold daughter Elizabeth for his stamps.

A CENTURY of cub scouting in Chipping Sodbury was marked with a camp weekend at Hanson’s HQ at the Ridge.

Local cubs celebrated the landmark anniversary by recreating scouting from 100 years ago, enjoying a variety of activities from archery and canoeing to shooting, tracking and cooking.

Joyce Burges formed the cub pack in June, 1915, at the request of Lord Baden-Powell, a year earlier than the rest of the country.

The Baden-Powells were family friends of the Burges family, who lived at Ridge House, and stayed at the estate.

During the celebrations, a plaque was unveiled by Robin Turner, the son of one of the first young boys to be invested into the cub pack. Harold Turner later became Joyce Burges’ assistant leader.

Current group scout leader, Nick Cook, said: “It was a great opportunity for today’s cub scouts to experience a camp on the same lawns and play in the grounds of our predecessors.”

Pupils bringing in the cash for Ugandan trip A GROUP of students at Brimsham Green School are raising money to fund a trip to Uganda.

The 12-strong party has already raised about £9,000 for the visit to Hosanna School, near Kampala, and has to reach a target of £27,500 by next June.

During the trip, the students will get involved in teaching pupils at the school and their fund raising will also buy stationery.

So far they have held a race night, car boot sale, collected old clothes for recycling and run cake stalls.

They also helped at the recent Proms in the Meadow event and have further moneyspinners planned throughout August and September.

They include: Sunday, August 2, family fun day with games, stalls and food at Brimsham Fields Park, near

the lake, 1pm-5pm. Second hand Brimsham School uniforms also for sale.

Service station and shop welcomes MP as local businesses come under the spotlight THE couple who run Stanshawe Service Station in Yate were visited by Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall to highlight an inquiry into Britain’s business community.

The all-party inquiry is examining the importance of the country’s everyday entrepreneurs, such as Sue and Rod Kembrey, and what they need to thrive.

As well as selling fuel, the couple also run a convenience store on the site in Westerleigh Road.

Sue said: “It was fantastic for Luke to take the time to come out and visit our store.

“It allowed him to see firsthand just how important local shops are to an area and to show him just how hard we work as retailers.”

Van ban at waste tips avoided as council considers revised scheme A METHOD is being devised to allow people whose only vehicle is a works van to dump their household waste at Sort It! centres.

Efforts to stop business waste being tipped at the centres, such as the one in Yate, could have led to those whose personal vehicle is also a company van

being stopped from getting rid of rubbish from their own homes.

South Gloucestershire Council’s communities committee had originally been asked to approve a scheme that would mean all vehicles being used to carry waste to the centres would have to be registered – with a ban on any vehicle

belonging to a business.

But that would have prevented anyone whose works van doubled up as their private transport from disposing of their personal household waste correctly.

Westerleigh Liberal Democrat councillor, Claire Young, successfully proposed an

amendment asking officers to come up with a scheme to enable those people to continue to use Sort It! centres.

She said: “They will only be allowed to transport household waste, not business waste, but it’s right that they should be able to access these services like other residents.”

Tasty treats on offer at two-day food and drink extravaganza

A TWO-day food and drink feast is promised when Chipping Sodbury hosts an annual festival that organisers have promised will be the best yet.

The town’s chamber of commerce will run the event on Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12, with many pubs, cafes and restaurants hosting tastings and cookery demonstrations.

Spokeswoman Ann Murray said: “This year promises to be

our best festival ever, with lots of extra stalls and even a ride on a Routemaster bus.

“We have included drinks for the first time and have all sorts of local suppliers offering tasters at the new venues of Hatherell’s Yard and the Waitrose store.”

There will also be a food and drink trail on the opening day, when visitors will be able to stroll around the town and sample local fare at a number of venues.

Other attractions include a cider and apple juice tasting at The Coffee Bean and cocktails at the George Hotel.

There will be an extended farmers’ market on the Saturday from 9am-4pm, while cheese, specialist bread, cakes and cordials will be among the items for tasting at Hatherell’s Yard market and Waitrose.

Friends organise forest fun time for children at Ridge Wood A FAMILY forest trail will be open in Ridge Wood on August 20 to test children’s knowledge of woodland life.

Primary age youngsters can go along to the local nature reserve between Yate and Chipping Sodbury from 2pm4.30pm for the free Forest Fun Time event.

It has been organised by the Friends of Ridge Wood, with the quiz trail culminating in have-ago woodland craft sessions.

Trail sheets can be collected from the Jubilee Gardens entrance to the site and all children taking part must be accompanied by an adult.

The event is one of a programme of activities organised by the volunteer friends’ group and follows a successful evening chorus walk led by Ed Drewitt, of TV’s Springwatch fame.

A moth discovery evening, with local expert Ray Barnett, is planned for October as part of South Gloucestershire Council’s Discover festival.

Ridge Wood is on a wedge of high ground that marks the boundary between the towns and

is important for its features and diversity of species.

As well as running events

for the community, the friends also carry out conservation work in conjunction with South

Gloucestershire Council and the site owners, Hanson Aggregates.

Sibling rivalry between Shelley and Ben at new triathlon event THERE will be sibling rivalry during a new triathlon when Yate Leisure Centre worker Shelley Rendell competes against her brother.

Shelley and her younger brother Ben Neary have both signed up for the first Bradley Stoke triathlon, which takes place on Sunday, August 30.

Ben is also a colleague of his sister – he works at Thornbury Leisure Centre – and they are among more than 100 competitors to have already snapped up places in the event.

The triathlon is being hosted

by Active Centres, which runs the leisure centres for South Gloucestershire Council, in conjunction with the authority and Triathlon England.

Those taking part will have to complete a 400-metre pool swim at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, an 18km cycle ride and a 5km run, with Bradley Stoke

Way closed for the cycle and run phases between 6am and 2pm.

Shelley, 36, and Ben, 35, are experienced runners but this will be the first time they have had a go at triathlon.

Shelley said: “Ben and I are always up for a challenge. Our close relationship always brings out a competitive streak and we can’t wait to battle it out. It’s going to be a great atmosphere, an exciting day for families and fellow staff.”

Anyone over 18 can take part, with the event catering for all abilities.

Active has organised it on a voluntary basis as part of its tenth anniversary celebrations and any profits will be reinvested into future events and local sport development projects.

American classic cars muscle in to Yate MORE than 200 cars were on view at the Bristol American Car Show held at Yate Town’s ground. The show attracts thousands of visitors each year to the display of trucks, cars and bikes.

The annual show, now in its 24th year raises money to help children in Bristol with special needs and this year raised over £4000 to add to the £42000 achieved from previous events.

Charity day for St. Nicks FC CHIPPING Sodbury based St. Nicks FC celebrated the end of the season with its two main social events of the year.

Yate Town FC’s ground hosted an activity day resulting in £500 being raised for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal and Street League, a football based charity (www.streetleague.co.uk ).

The day included a challenge match between the U16’s and a mixed team of managers and coaches. The sides competed for the annual Memorial Trophy staged in memory of former club Chair Brian Tuckfield. Brian’s widow Cath selected the two charities to benefit.

The County Cricket Ground in Bristol provided the setting for the club’s annual presentation event. Attendance awards were presented to each player, with a chosen few from each team given special awards by their managers and teammates.

Club Secretary Iain Prior said; “the event provides the club, its managers and players the opportunity to thank parents and supporters for their tireless work behind the scenes and we are now looking forward to the forthcoming season”.

St. Nicks FC welcome players of all ages and ability from the U6 development squad through to adult.

The U14s and U15s girl’s teams are looking for new players to strengthen their squads.

Popular Yate playing fields get improved changing rooms CHANGING rooms at Yate playing fields are being upgraded at a cost of £84,000.

The work at the Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) fields in Kelston Close includes fitting new showers and accessible toilets, as well as carrying out landscaping and general building improvements.

The project has attracted a £25,000 grant from the community programme Barclays Spaces for Sports, which is linked with the Football Foundation.

A further £7,000 will come from South Gloucestershire Council’s New Homes Bonus scheme, while Dodington Parish Council, which owns the playing

fields, will fund the remaining £52,000.

The latest funding for the site follows previous grants totalling £68,000 from Barclays and the Football Foundation since 2006.

That money was used to pay for a multi-use games area, provide a three-year sports development plan and

to organise holiday sports tournaments for young people.

The changing rooms are mainly used by football players, with the layout mainly designed for male players.

But the council is also aiming to make them suitable for any female teams they may have in future.

The team performed well in their first friendly at Premier Division Weymouth but narrowly lost the game 2-0. However they faired better on their travels, winning 3-0 at Western League Shepton Mallet and 2-1 at Cribbs.

Hungerford and Bath City have prepared the team for a very busy first month involving seven scheduled games. They include a local derby against Mangotsfield on Bank Holiday Monday.

Behind the scenes a group of volunteers has been working to bring improvements to Lodge Road, including a refurbished and redecorated hospitality lounge as well as an updated and relocated Club Shop and Kit Room. There are also new

Twirlers off to Italy after triumph at Nationals THE Yate Star Twirlers have been crowned National Champions after an event in Weston Super Mare.

The group managed three first places, two second and a third, at the National Association of Majorettes National Championships.

Founded in 2010, the all girl group of 9 to 20 year olds now face the prospect of representing England at the European Majorette Championships in Italy this October for the third year in a row.

The troupe, funded entirely by donations, is always on the look out for new members and welcome boys and girls.

Athletics success for Sodbury students YEAR 10 girls from Chipping Sodbury School have become South Gloucestershire Champions in althletics. They won the South Gloucestershire Athletics Championship held in June.

Some impressive individual and team performances helped the school achieve its best ever results. Year 8 girls finished third out of the 16 schools competing, Year 8 boys took second place and Y9 girls came third.

Summer fun as Pucklechurch shine in summer league PLAYING their matches at Wellsway School in Keynsham, the Puckle girls in yellow and royal blue have continued their winning ways during Summer league this year.

Starting back in May, we have so far taken on teams such as Keynsham 1st’s & 2nd’s, Knowle 1st’s & 2nd’s, Wick, BAC, Old B’s and Westberries and have scored an impressive 28 goals with only conceding 9.

With teamwork and commitment from all players on the pitch the goals were finished off by forwards - Sophie Edwards, Tina Scammell, Rhian Phillips, Amy Davidge, Emily Pollock, Kate Jones and Hitch and mid-fielders Laura Stone and Lisa Whitehead.

We all thoroughly enjoy summer league as its a great way of keeping fitness and skill levels up and with still 4 games left to play the Pucklechurch girls will continue to battle away and aim for the top of the table.

Better August needed for Chipping Sodbury CHIPPING Sodbury Cricket Club go into the final month of the league season hoping to discover some better form. The first X1 challenge for a top four finish in the Gloucester division of the West of England Premier League. With three home games in August, a top-four finish would represent a real triumph after a lack-lustre start to the campaign from a new-look side.

Mixed results for Sodbury 2nd’s, playing in the Glos & Wilts Division has given the side an opportunity to blood some of the club’s younger players and many have responded to the demands of cricket at this level by showing real potential.

A trip to Gloucester AIW Sports on August 1 and a home match against Marlborough the week after will determine whether Jerry Swatton’s side can avoid a bottom two finish.

Sodbury 3rd’s, promoted last year to Division Three in the Bristol & District League, the highest level the team has performed at, have also found themselves on the back foot more often than they would have liked.

The vast majority of their games have been against opponent’s first elevens and the story of this season has been one of learning and honing skills in an extremely competitive environment.

The fourth team, promoted last year, are on course to finish in a highly satisfactory mid-table position, while the fifths, in Division Ten, are also challenging for a similar position after giving several youngsters a first taste of senior cricket.

The Sodbury Slayers were due to host their first home match in the new NatWest U19 Club T20 at the Ridings on August 1 against Bristol West Indians & Phoenix ahead of facing Keynsham Hawks on Friday August 7 (6.15pm).

Plenty of razzmatazz is being planned for both games, including the use of coloured clothing and pink balls. Admittance is free.

New boss for Old Sodbury FC FORMER Cardiff City goalkeeper John Rendell has taken over as the new playermanager of Old Sodbury FC. The 36-year-old is determined to help the ambitious Bristol Premier Combination club continue to progress as he adjusts to his first management role after making 700 appearances at Toolstation and Southern League level.

Rendell, who is also well known as an outstanding wicketkeeper for Chipping Sodbury CC, said: “I’m really excited, the standard of football is good and the club has a lot of potential’

Rendell’s semi-pro career included stints with Yate Town, Cinderford, Paulton Rovers, Mangotsfield and Bitton AFC, and has won two Toolstation titles.

He added: “I felt the time was right to take a first step into management and things have fallen nicely into place. Preseason training is well underway and we’re got several friendlies before the league matches start”.

Old Sodbury run two sides and are about to officially open a new pavilion. The club is looking for new players to help them move forward.

Success served up by young Sodbury Tennis Club players YOUNG players were in the spotlight at an open day run

by Sodbury Tennis Club, with certificates presented to the winners of a children’s competition.

The event was the club’s second open day of the season and local people were invited to see the facilities on offer.

Club officials said it was encouraging to see new faces of all ages taking part in the activities on offer during the day.

A focal point was the award of certificates to those who took part in the Road to Wimbledon contest, a nationally-run challenge open to boys and girls aged 11-14 at all tennis clubs.

For several of the girls it was their first taste of competition, the final involving closely matched Abigail Matthews and Eleanor Finch, with Abigail winning 7-6 after a tie-break.

The boys’ final was between Archie Williams and Toby Kinnerly, with Toby making it third time lucky after being the runner-up for the previous two years.

Victory for the winners secured their places in the county round of the competition and they received their certificates from the club’s women’s and men’s captains, Annie Griffin and Martin Coulthard.
