Long awaited cinema in Yate gets opening date and new Disney film IT’S been on Yate’s “Most Wanted” list for years but the town is finally set to celebrate the opening of its own cinema.

Cineworld has announced its multi-screen cinema will open on Friday, April 29.

With six state-of-the-art screens showing the latest Hollywood releases, the complex on the new Yate Riverside site will seat nearly 1,000 moviegoers.

Disney’s hotly anticipated Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War are among the films set to be screened in the cinema’s opening week.

As well as providing entertainment locally for people who would otherwise have to travel out of the town to see a film, the development has also created 35 jobs.

Many of those taken on were appointed after a recruitment day was held in Yate Leisure Centre earlier this year.

Public urged to join in consultation on future of libraries PEOPLE concerned about the future of Chipping Sodbury library are being urged to have their say during a consultation exercise now running.

South Gloucestershire Council needs to save £650,000 from its library service budget, with funding for the Chipping Sodbury building possibly stopping, the mobile library service ending and opening hours cut at other libraries.

A petition is running to save the library in High Street, Chipping Sodbury, but the council wants as many people as possible to give their views via its consultation process.

However, it said no changes were planned before October 2017 and it anticipated that through discussions with communities during the next year, alternative options could be negotiated to help avoid many cuts in the service. That could involve greater community involvement in the operating of libraries.

The consultation is one of a trio of public have-a-say schemes running until May 13 as the council tries to make its significant savings.

When it set its 2016-17 budget in February, it included savings of an extra £22 million from annual savings by 2019-20.

As well as libraries, it is also looking at its office accommodation, including its Badminton Road offices in Yate, and is considering introducing community hubs from where multiple services can be provided. Priority areas for that kind of set-up would include Yate.

Council leader Matthew Riddle, said: “The council has no choice but to reduce spending but we do have a choice in how we do it. Our priority remains to protect frontline services, particularly for the most vulnerable, wherever we can.”

As part of the consultations, drop-in events have been planned, including two in Yate library on Saturday, April 2, from 9.30am-1pm and on Monday, April 11, from 2pm-7pm, the second to also cover information on Chipping Sodbury library and the mobile library.

There will also be an office accommodation drop-in event in the Badminton Road council offices on Tuesday, April 12, from 4pm-7pm.

A second round of consultation will take place in the autumn on updated plans. Sodbury town councillor Juan Nuevo is fighting to save Chipping Sodbury library. He said: “Libraries are the backbone of our education system. For many children, the library represents their only access to books, reading and the internet outside of their home. If we let the libraries go, we will never get them back.

“I’m calling on everybody to take action to ensure library services are sustained and developed into the 21st century.”

Police seek graffiti vandal who damaged cars in Chipping Sodbury

POLICE are appealing for help to trace a mystery graffiti vandal responsible for spray-painting and damaging around 20 vehicles in Chipping Sodbury.

The vandalism has been happening since the middle of January, with the latest reported incident on Sunday March 13.

All the damaged vehicles have been parked overnight in Droves Way, a new housing development behind Waitrose supermarket. All have been sprayed with the same colour red paint.

Beat manager PC Dan Jones said: “These appear to be random acts of criminal damage with no obvious motive. We have been carrying out house to house enquiries, and high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols, but so far we have no leads.”

Police issue alert over theft of Land Rovers LAND Rover owners are being warned by Avon and Somerset police to take extra precautions as a result of a rise in thefts during the past six months.

The vehicles are being targeted by thieves, regardless of the age of the models, with the Defender at particular risk.

As manufacture of the Defender has now been stopped, police believe that model in particular could increasingly be sought out by car thieves.

Owners have been advised to park their vehicles in well-lit or overlooked areas, or preferably in a secure garage.

They have also been recommended to fit security devices such as alarms, tracking devices and immobilisers, to use a marking solution or permanent marker on component parts and to etch windows with the vehicle registration number.

Anyone with information about Land Rover thefts should contact the police force by dialling 101 or calling Crimestoppers on 0800 55111.

Triathlon gives triple Help needed for woodland work morning chance to help combat MS at nature reserve

THE group that helps care for Ridge Wood is looking for volunteers to join in a work morning at the nature reserve between Yate and Chipping Sodbury.

A range of activities suitable for all abilities need to be carried out during a couple of hours on Sunday, April 24.

Anyone interested should just turn up at 10am at the Melrose Close entrance to the wood, where gloves and tools will be provided by the Friends of Ridge Wood team.

The organisation has also planned an evening chorus walk on Wednesday, May 4, to be led by naturalist Ed Drewitt.

Those joining in will learn how to identify the songs and calls of common birds in the wood and surrounding area.

The event starts at 7pm from the Quarry Road entrance, with a suggested donation of £2 for adults and £1 for children.

Future looks rosy

STUDENTS at Chipping Sodbury School sent roses to special people in their lives as part of a fund raising scheme in support of WaterAid. Pupils in the school’s Frome House came up with the idea of selling single roses and chocolates to fellow classmates to boost the amount of money already collected for their chosen charity of the year. So far their efforts during the academic year have brought in more than £600 to help provide clean water to families in the developing world.

The school also invited Pat Spry of the local Frampton Cotterell branch of WaterAid to address an assembly and give pupils and staff an insight into the dangers faced by millions of people who do not have access to safe and clean sanitation facilities.

WaterAid’s focus this year has been on maternity hospitals to help new mothers and babies.

Salon owner Marie-Louise hoping to nail top award BEAUTICIAN MarieLouise Coster has reached the final stage of a competition to find the manicurist of the year.

Marie-Louise runs All About Mi in Chipping Sodbury and is one of five nail technicians named as finalists in the Scratch Star Awards.

She will travel to London during April for a judging day to be assessed and interviewed, with an awards ceremony taking place in June.

The shortlisting comes after MarieLouise made the finals of the therapist of the year category in the Professional Beauty Awards. She said: “I am obviously hoping to win but I am delighted to have got to the finals.”

Ofsted inspections lead to good reports for nursery and after-school club A NURSERY in Yate and a Chipping Sodbury after-school club have both been assessed as good by inspectors from education watchdog Ofsted.

The Little Acorns Nursery, based on the site of St Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Sundridge Park, Yate, and Raysfield After-School Club were each registered in 2014.

Inspector June Robinson said children and their families were well supported by leaders and managers at Little Acorns.

She said teaching was good and staff had a good understanding of how children learned, planning challenging activities to promote their individual needs and interests.

The children were well behaved, learned to share well and showed respect and consideration for others.

Ofsted’s Dominique Allotey said staff at the after-school club sited at Raysfield Junior School in Finch Road promoted positive behaviour among the children and taught them good social skills.

They planned a wide range of activities which engaged the youngsters and captured their interests. She said they also liaised with the school effectively to meet the children’s needs and had a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities to protect youngsters from harm and to safeguard their welfare.

Anniversary celebrations for vital Shopmobility scheme after ten years of success A SCHEME which makes it easier for people with mobility problems to get around Yate Shopping Centre is celebrating a landmark anniversary.

Shopmobility South Gloucestershire has been providing mobility scooters and wheelchairs for ten years.

It was established in April 2006 after an initial meeting was organised three years earlier by community stalwart Keith Holloway, who did much to improve access for those with mobility difficulties.

Mr Holloway died before the scheme was up and running but his widow, Thornbury councillor Shirley Holloway, said he would

have been proud of the project.

She said: “Keith would have been delighted to see his dream of Shopmobility become a success. I’m only sorry that he never saw his ideas come to fruition.”

Shopmobility vice-chairman and founding trustee David Bell said: “I am so pleased that we are celebrating ten years of the scheme in Yate. It has made such a positive difference to people’s lives.”

The service allows users to maintain their independence and make full use of the shopping centre’s facilities.

They can also hire wheelchairs for longer periods of

time if necessary, allowing them to go on holiday or to be able to invite a friend or relative who doesn’t find it easy to get out and about to visit.

Project worker Sheridan Crew said: “With the exception of the Mall at Cribbs Causeway, Yate is the only place in South Gloucestershire where people can visit a variety of shops and

services through scooter hire.

“Shopmobility is being used by more people from throughout South Gloucestershire.

People recognise the value of the service and for some, using a scooter on a regular basis is an important part of their life.”

The scheme, which relies on donations and grants, is based in Yate library and can be contacted by emailing shopmobilitysouthglos@ yahoo.com or calling into the office from 9.30am-4pm on Tuesdays and Fridays or from 9.30am-2pm on Thursdays and Saturdays.

20-year sentence for killer of “vulnerable” Jason Betts A MAN convicted of the manslaughter of Jason Betts in Yate has been jailed for 20 years.

As reported in last month’s Yate and Sodbury Voice, Nathan Skeen was found guilty of manslaughter and wounding with intent after a five-week trial at Bristol Crown Court. But sentencing had been adjourned until after the Voice had gone to press.

Mr Betts, 38, died from a head injury inflicted as punishment for owing money for drugs.

Described as vulnerable, he was found unconscious at his flat in Celestine Road in March 2015 by a friend.

He was put on a life support

machine in hospital but it was switched off the next day.

A post-mortem examination concluded he’d suffered a head injury which had caused a bleed to the brain.

Skeen, 29, of Lewisham, London, had also previously admitted charges of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs, including heroin and cocaine.

A second man, Nixon Apire, 31, of Great North Road, Barnet, had pleaded guilty to wounding with intent in connection with an assault on Mr Betts about a week before his death, as well as being concerned in the supply of class A drugs. He was jailed for 15 years.

AIR loss is a common symptom in cats. There are several possible causes, which often look the same, making it a frustrating condition to treat:

Parasites Fleas are by far the most common cause of hair loss, there is a big flea population in the city and all cats are probably exposed periodically. Many cats suffer from Flea Allergic Dermatitis (FAD) - an allergy to flea-bites. This causes severe itching, hair loss and scabby skin. The first step with any cat showing signs of hair loss is to ensure a thorough flea control program. This should treat all animals in the house as well as the environment in order to break the flea life-cycle. We always use prescription products, as many over-the-counter remedies aren’t strong enough. Other parasites such as mites and lice can also cause hair loss, though they are much less common.

Infection Bacteria, yeasts or fungi can cause hair loss, redness, itchiness, scabs and oozing

sores. These can be treated symptomatically with antibiotics or antifungals, however, most skin infections are secondary to an underlying condition which requires more investigation to identify.

Volunteers needed to help charity for carers in South Gloucestershire AN organisation that supports carers is looking for volunteers who can help the charity in South Gloucestershire.

The Carers Support Centre provides information and support to people who look after a disabled, elderly or unwell family member or friend.

Mike Hatch, of the centre, said: “I am trying to recruit volunteers who could offer a couple of hours twice a month in a GP surgery.

“They will help identify people who are caring for someone to offer them information and access to ongoing support.”

Peachy! New orchard planted on common as part of Riverside planning conditions

A COLLECTION of fruit trees has been planted on Yate Common to create an orchard that replaces one lost to development.

The 20 trees, consisting of apple, pear, cherry, plum and quince varieties, were required to be planted as a condition of the Yate Riverside scheme.

The retail and restaurant complex, built as an extension to Yate Shopping Centre and centred on a new cinema, was built on land where a small orchard of six trees had to be cleared to make way for the construction work.

Although planners said a replacement orchard was required for the town, it did not have to be at Riverside.

Crestbridge, which owns the shopping centre and developed Yate Riverside, spoke with Yate Town Council and opted to put the trees on the common after local consultation.

Shopping Centre manager Andrew Lowrey said: “The

planning condition stipulated that we could plant the trees either on the Riverside site or,

if not possible, anywhere in the Yate area.

“The common seemed the

ideal location as there is already a recently planted orchard on the site so this will complement it. In years to come, as the orchard develops it will make the common an even more attractive area for wildlife and public use.

“Wherever possible we have tried to include local trees, hence the Ashmeads Kermal, Beauty of Bath and Blenheim Orange, all of which are eating apple varieties.”

Pat Cotterell, treasurer of the Friends of Yate Common, thanked the council and Crestbridge for the trees.

She said: “It’s good news that we have further trees being planted on the common as they will bring greater wildlife diversity and break up the current openness.

“The common is becoming more popular with the public as an area for walking and relaxing.

Pavement parking woes Queen’s landmark continue despite changes birthday to be recognised to yellow lines in annual Festival

MOVING yellow lines further out into the road in Broad Street, Chipping Sodbury, has so far had little effect on parking.

The re-positioning of the lines was carried out in an attempt to encourage drivers to park further away from the pavement.

Members of the Sodbury Parish Plan committee said the area near the town hall was especially narrow and cars with long bonnets could encroach significantly on the pavement.

Problems caused by pavement parking generally was one of the issues a plan questionnaire highlighted as being an irritant to pedestrians.

The committee said: “In the responses, a number of people cited places where parking on the pavement was a real annoyance, making it difficult to get past with a pushchair or a mobility scooter - even sometimes having to walk in the road to get past.”

But despite moving the Broad Street lines, the committee said: “It is noticeable that barely anyone has taken advantage of this extra room to park further back from the pavement and perhaps do not understand it.”

Local police said there were powers to fine drivers who obstructed the pavement but it would be more likely for a warning notice to be issued.

If the obstruction was significant, members of the public should contact the police but the committee said it was told that action would only be taken if the problem was exceptional.

Meanwhile the committee has been discussing the proposal to install more seating areas in the town. It is understood that Sodbury Town Council has proposed using surplus funds from the now defunct farmers’ market to pay for seats.

MORE than 50 events have already been confirmed for this year’s Chipping Sodbury Festival, with the Queen’s 90th birthday influencing its royal theme.

Organisers have decided to give the festival a kings and queens flavour in recognition of the monarch’s landmark day.

The event will run from June 10-19, with old favourites and some new additions featured in the programme, including the traditional Lions Club street fair and carnival on Saturday, June 18.

Ann Widdecombe, the former minister and shadow cabinet member who now boasts appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and pantomime roles in her CV, is expected to be of special interest just days before the EU referendum.

Tickets will go on sale soon for her talk in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on life after Westminster.

Old favourites Forever Abba will also return to the town, while local historian Jim Elsworth will give his popular presentation “Ever Changing Sodbury”.

The award winning Flowers Band, led by Paul Holland, has been booked for the Last Night of the Proms, while jazz supported by Sodbury Jazz and Blues will also feature.

Unsung heroes recognised at community awards ceremony NEARLY 30 people received awards for their valuable voluntary contribution to South Gloucestershire.

Litter picking, road safety, the environment and helping the vulnerable were just some of the areas in which those recognised have worked in their spare time.

There was also a special award for Dr Derek Dominey for his support of people with dementia in the district.

The community awards are given by each year’s chairman or woman of South Gloucestershire Council.

Councillor Erica Williams, the current chairwoman, presented the awards with Sara-Jane Watkins, principal of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, which hosted the ceremony at its WISE Campus.

Among those recognised were Eileen Holcombe and Shirley Owen, whose many contributions to Paul’s Place in Coalpit Heath include providing hot lunches for the adults with disabilities who meet at the centre.

Connie Jarvis received her

award for helping improve community life in Winterbourne Down. Having taught locally, she has been a central figure in many organisations from the WI to the May Day carnival team, also taking on the chairmanship of the Winterbourne Down Society when it was in danger of closing.

minister and member of the Churches Together committee, and Trevor Thompson, whose 25 years’ service to the church includes ten as churchwarden.

Mary has run much of the church’s children’s work for 17 years, runs and prepares monthly bereavement lunches, has taken supplies to Uganda through the Mothers’ Union and delivered food and gifts to refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol.

Trevor uses his woodworking skills to make items for the church, helps with maintenance and organises the church floodlighting for special events.

He also gives talks and produces displays on local history.

The Lord Lieutenant’s Special Award to Dr Dominey, who is well respected for his contribution to those with dementia and their families, was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, and vice-Lord Lieutenant Robert Bernays.

screen first movies YATE’S long awaited cinema is about to open its doors to moviegoers, with Disney’s new Jungle Book already set to be screened in its first week.

People in the town have pressed for a cinema for many years, saying the population was big enough to support such a facility.

Their dream came true when it was announced a six-screen cinema would be included in the Yate Riverside scheme - an extension of Yate Shopping Centre.

Now the date for its opening has been revealed as Friday, April 29.

The cinema, operated by Cineworld, will have seats for 967 film fans. The company said state-of-the-art screens would give crystal-clear images and a powerful digital sound system.

It has also created 35 local jobs, with a recruitment day held at Yate Leisure Centre leading to the appointment of a number of the staff.

Those recruited include Kate Richardson, 28, of Yate, who has been appointed as a team member.

She said: “I’ve lived in Yate for just over ten years now and am so excited that Cineworld is opening here. I was thrilled to be told that I had got the job.”

Kate said local people had been waiting for a cinema for the town “for a long time” and she was keen to be involved now that it had arrived.

Steve Plank, general manager of the complex, said: “We’re delighted about the opening of Cineworld Yate. We have an exciting line-up of films coming up, such as Captain America: Civil War and X-Men:

Apocalypse.”

Until now, anyone from Yate who wanted to go to the cinema would have to travel either to Cribbs Causeway, Longwell Green, Bristol or to the community cinema in Wottonunder- Edge.

View from Yate Heritage Centre Newspaper archive Regular readers of this column will recall my report on the collection of images we salvaged from the former Gazette newspaper offices in Dursley.

Although we still have to rescue a final ten per cent, we have now collated the vast majority of the 20,000 or so images from the basement there.

It has been a time consuming and painstaking project for our volunteers - and indeed for volunteers at other museum venues in South Gloucestershire.

The full collection amounts to some 100,000 images, which is a serious amount of work to sort out, let alone scan and catalogue.

Was it worth it?

In my 2015 report, I noted that we had identified significant events and important aspects of local history. However, behind the scenes there is always the nagging doubt that we might also have to pore over a great deal of dross. However, this has not been the case.

We have been scanning material from Parnall (Yate) from the early 1960s and a whole new world has opened up of dances, carnivals and factory sports. It has been something of a revelation and a great boon to our photo archive. Naturally, there has been duplication some of these photos taken at the events are almost identical and therefore never used.

People power The value of many of these images is not always just their historic worth. Although there is inevitably an intellectual and academic element to this sort of work, it is also rooted in working with the community.

Not surprisingly, there are vast numbers of people, buildings and features contained within t ese images which tell the

story of the local area. We will, therefore, need locals within the community to help identify people, places and events captured in these images. It will clearly be a long term project involving many people.

manager for Chipping Sodbury and Cotswold Edge. I began my policing career in Thames Valley Police, where I trained in Reading and began working at Milton Keynes Police Station.

In April 2015 I transferred to Avon and Somerset police having spent two years here as a Special Constable between 2011-2013.

I joined the policing response team at Patchway initially before moving to my current role at the beat manager late last month.

Having given up countless hours working as a Special Constable in Chipping Sodbury, I have a soft spot for the town and I was delighted when given the chance to move back to the station as a Beat manager.

For me this is mindless vandalism that is having time and financial implications for the residents and the perpetrator needs to be caught. Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity via 101 or 999 depending on the urgency. If you know any information about who has committed these acts then please get in touch. We are in the process of requesting CCTV and there will be a number of uniformed and plain-clothes patrols over the coming weeks to help catch the perpetrator.

Each month I will write an article that will be relevant and hopefully informative. Next month I am going to write about the dangers of legal highs, which are becoming more and more prevalent both locally and nationally.

Panic Stations - Court Players review THE Court Players choice of “Panic Stations” by Derek Benfield did not disappoint the audiences that filled The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy for all three performances.

Derek Benfield is a master of farce and no stranger to acting himself. Amongst his most well known roles was that of Robert, husband of housewife and amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthrop in the TV series.

English gentleman Chester Dreadnought (Dave Masters) purchases an idyllic country cottage but instead of finding the peace and quiet he had longed for discovers he is in the centre of a full military exercise that has been organised by the local training camp. He also finds himself plagued by local unhandy man Abel Bounty and his wife (Mike McDonald and Sam Palmer) who have been brought in to get the cottage ready for its new owner.

Next on the scene is Carol (Louise Cox), a young and naïve women who, having met Chester in the local pub moves in prior to his arrival mistakenly thinking the cottage is to be their love-nest. Confusion and misunderstandings abound when Chester’s wife Patricia (Carole Vincent) arrives with her aristocratic parents Lord

and Lady Elrood in tow (Kevin Stephens and Jean Clarke).

Gill Cope adds to the mayhem as the eccentric historian Miss Partridge and the suitably camouflaged Dan Long has a commanding presence as Sergeant Everest.

This is a very “wordy” play and for the most part the cast remembered their dialogue

and kept the pace moving. On the odd occasion when the dialogue slacked it was more than compensated for by some fine facial expressions and great characterisations.

The set was well constructed and decorated and we were never in any doubt that it was anything other than a lovely country cottage in need of some redecoration. There were effective sound effects, realistic props and costumes that were in keeping with each character.

Many people were disappointed at not being able to see this show as the “House Full” notices went up two weeks before the performance which goes to show that amateur drama is alive and well in the local community.

The Court Players next production is “Not The Royal Variety Show” in July and the pantomime “Humpty Dumpty” at the end of January 2017.

Ink firm steps in to help air cadets targeted by raiders A COMPANY has stepped in to help Chipping Sodbury air cadets after cash and six laptops were stolen during a break-in at the group’s premises in Yate.

Printing ink firm Sun Chemical, of Station Road, Yate, presented 2509 Squadron with a new laptop during a visit to the Armstrong Way base by the firm’s Richard Hayden and Carolyn Bennett.

They were also given a tour of the premises to discover the range of activities that involve the cadets.

Mr Hayden said: “We were told that the laptop would be a great help to the cadets in attaining their qualifications and working on various projects.”

The centre was raided and damaged in January, leaving the cadets and their leaders devastated. The youngsters had carried out fund raising to buy the laptops, which they used to study for aviation qualifications.

HE approach to Easter and that special weekend is over again for another year. I trust that you, your family and friends were able to enjoy the weekend itself and maybe some time out to enrich it further.

As we look back, whatever our stance in life may be, the events of that first Easter remain as a focal point of great significance to our world, our nation and maybe ourselves too? Over the last 20 centuries at least the significance of Easter and its clear message have challenged and changed many millions, or is it billions, of human

In my own case I first heard about the personal significance of Easter at the age of five when I was taken along by my grown up cousin Winifred to the local Church across the park from where I lived in Kettering, Northants. I remember feeling baffled by all that was being said and done by the adults there to celebrate this festival of Easter.

However, by the time I was 12 years old the personal aspect of Easter and all of its blessing was beginning to come home to me.

Since then every Easter has brought renewed and uniquely fresh insights of what God did for me at that first Easter through His son Jesus. No doubt you have significant memories of past Easters like me. Times when you were challenged to

think further than the weekend itself and paused to re-examine the personal renewal it can hold for you and your loved ones.

Of course we are still, in this country, completely free at this point to accept or reject the message and loving provision that Easter contains for each one of us. It includes accepting a guide and comforter for our life here on mother earth and the promise of eternal life after that.

Why don’t we spend some time during this April sorting through what all this can mean to you and me in 2016 and onwards? The lovely flowers that surround us in this season of springtime also speak clearly of the colourful and fresh new life that is available to us all through the events of that first Easter.

Again thanks to all those who have been in touch this month,

Will you join me in raising awareness of dementia in May?

ROM Sunday the 15th of May until Saturday the 21st the Alzheimer’s Society will be running fundraisers and awareness sessions up and down the UK in an effort to raise awareness of people living with dementia in our communities, to provide support to those with a diagnosis and to help families, friends and colleagues confront their worries about the condition.

The society has a very powerful message to share with us and it is something that I have and will continue to share and promote too as I organise awareness sessions across our community; that core message is that ‘we believe that life doesn’t end when dementia begins”.

I strongly believe that this should be true for the 2600 people currently living with dementia in South Gloucestershire and for their families. The projections present a worrying trend, with the Alzheimer’s Society believing this number will increase to around 4000 by 2021.

The Prime Minister has made some welcome progress, investing £300 Million in the UK science and medical sector

to help our brilliant minds find a breakthrough and to tackle the condition head on, with annual investment in dementia research set to double by 2025.

This government’s commitment is a start but I am determined that together we can I build upon this locally for our community. That is why on Friday the 20th from 11am until 12pm I will be hosting my third free dementia awareness session in our area, at the Coalpit Heath Village and Miners Social Club. I have also began reaching out to First Bus, Local shop owners and other public facing people so that we can see some positive action in our area to ensure that as many of us as possible are able to obtain a greater understanding of living with dementia and how we can make a difference in ensuring believing that ‘life doesn’t end where dementia begins’ is a reality in South Gloucestershire.

So on Friday the 20th will you join me to help our community by raising awareness of dementia?

Classic cars ready to roll again OWNERS of classic and vintage cars and bikes are being invited to enter this years Classic Car Run. The event is set to take place on Sunday 26 June and organisers the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury are hoping to match the record number of 225 entrants that took part in 2015.

Over the twenty-one year history of the run the Rotary Club has raised in excess of £90,000 with last years event achieving a record £7000 profit.

The money raised enables the club to support a variety of good causes both national and local, including the local branch of the RNLI. On the day, an early morning start in Chipping Sodbury will see participants follow a route south into rural Wiltshire with a coffee stop at the half way mark at Devizes Sports Club.

The journey home will take in All Cannings, East Kennet, Avebury and Hullvington with a final stop at Westonbirt School

near Tetbury. The event is open to pre-1991 cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles with entry costs held at £27

Sugar & Spice and All Things Nice?

Ann Murray is from the Cooking4 Cookery School based in Chipping Sodbury. She’s teamed up with Yate and Sodbury Voice to pass on her wealth of experience in the kitchen. She says: “Welcome to my world of observations, comments on what’s happening and sometimes some halfbaked thoughts. Each month I’ll be giving you a seasonal recipe and some cooking tips to go with it”.

HAT with Valentine’s Day, Mothering Sunday and then Easter, I’ve done well for chocolate and goodies.

So this month’s recipe is a wholesome Granola that tastes much better than anything you can buy in the shops. Unlike shop-bought versions it has no salt and uses honey or agave nectar (found with the sugars in the supermarket) instead of refined sugar. Both honey and the nectar are sweeter, so you need to use less of them compared to sugar. All good if you’re trying to cut down on salt and sugar.

So go ahead and enjoy whilst eating more healthily.

My Favourite Granola Makes 2 large (1.5 Litre) Kilner Jars of Granola Ingredients: Porridge Oats – 6 Cups Seeds – e.g. sunflower, pumpkin – ¼ Cup Nuts – coarsely chopped – almonds, pistachios, walnuts – 1 ¼ Cups Wheatgerm – ¼ Cup Flaxseeds – ¼ Cup Favourite spice e.g. cinnamon, mixed spice - ¾ tsp Sweetener – e.g. runny honey, agave nectar – ¾ Cup Extra virgin olive oil – 1/3 Cup Good quality vanilla extract(NOT essence)- 1tsp Egg whites-3 free range, large Dried fruit e.g. sour cherries, cranberries, currants, raisons, apricots, pears, prunes – coarsely chopped - 1 cup Here’s what you do:

PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 180C, Gas mark 4 1. In a large bowl combine all dry ingredients apart from the dried fruits.

2. Whisk in your chosen sweetener, vanilla extract and the olive oil.

3. With a fork whisk the egg whites until slightly frothy.

4. Add this to the other dry ingredients already mixed with the other wet ingredients.

5. Stir the mix until the oats are evenly coated.

6. Spray 1 very large rimmed baking tray(see picture) or 2 smaller rimmed baking trays with oil of your choice and spread out the granola mixture evenly

7. Bake for 20 minutes and stir 2 or 3 times moving the outer edges to the centre of the baking sheet so everything cooks evenly. Oven temperatures vary and timings, so don’t go out!

8. Keep an eye on it and if it browns too much at the edges, gently stir those parts into the middle.

9. Remove from the oven and add the dried fruits of your choice. Stir until well combined.

10. Cool completely in the trays.

Return of the Forbidden Panet cast during rehearsals

A HOST of hits from the 50s and 60s will feature in the latest production by Sodbury Vale Musical Comedy Club.

Members of the cast are in rehearsals for Return of the Forbidden Planet, a musical based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the sci-fi film Forbidden Planet, which starred Leslie Nielsen and Walter Pidgeon.

Favourite songs such as Great Balls of Fire, Good Vibrations, The Shoop Shoop Song and Shakin’ All Over help tell the story amid space suits and meteor showers.

The production will run from April 27-30 in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, with nightly performances at 7.30pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm on the closing day.

Leading riders back in action at Badminton after recovering from serious injuries

RIDERS William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson are set to return to top level competition at this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials after suffering serious injuries last season.

Fox-Pitt, who took the 2015 Badminton title on Chilli Morning, received a head trauma after a fall at an event in France last October but was recently cleared by a specialist to compete again.

Meanwhile, his great Britishbased New Zealand rival Andrew Nicholson is already back to winning ways after miraculously avoiding paralysis in a fall at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park in August.

He sustained a serious neck injury and underwent eight hours of surgery to repair fractures and stabilise his cervical spine. His surgeon told him the injury he had would have caused paralysis at the time of injury in 98 per cent of cases.

The riders are among one of the strongest ever fields of competitors entered for Badminton, which takes place just three months before the Olympic Games in Brazil.

Current Olympic eventing champion Michael Jung will head the German challenge with La Biosthetique Sam, while Zara Tindall will be aiming for a strong performance with High Kingdom to try and get a place in the British team for Rio de Janeiro.

Although crowd favourite Mary King doesn’t have an entry this year, her daughter Emily hopes to make her Badminton debut with Brookleigh, 25 years after her mother won the first Mitsubishi Motors Trophy.

Cricketers ready to start the season CHIPPING Sodbury are gearing up for a hectic summer of cricket by once again running five senior Saturday teams as well as a Sunday XI and youth teams from under-11s through to under-17s.

The season-opening game pitches the men’s side away to Gloucester City Winget on April 16, and the following weekend features two Saturday games at the Ridings with the first team entertaining Sherston and Sodbury 2nd’s meeting Hambrook. The busy weekend is completed by a Sunday home fixture on April 24 against Stapleton.

Final preparations for the league campaign conclude with the first XI travelling to Frenchay for a friendly on April 30 with the 2nd’s hosting Winterbourne. The Sunday XI host the Travellers on May 1.

All senior attention will then turn to league action on May 5 when all five senior sides will play. Jamie Rendell, the former Gloucestershire spinner, is to lead the first XI in the WEPL’s Gloucestershire division with Jerry Swatton in charge of the second XI who will be competing for the first time in Division Three of the Gloucestershire County League.

The third X1, led by their new captain Steve Febry find themselves in Division Seven of the freshly expanded Bristol & District League.

Damien Frodsham will lead the fourth XI, in Division Eleven, and Richard Deane is once again bringing to bear all his experience out in the middle for Sodbury fifths, who will be playing in Division Sixteen.

The Sunday XI, under the leadership of Tom Febry are once again taking part in the Village League.

Defeats dent youngster’s title hopes

Old Sodbury Under 15’s 2 Downend Saints 4 A rain-affected season for Old Sodbury Under 15’s found them facing a tricky home fixture against a much-improved Downend Saints after a month without a fixture.

The visitors started the better of the teams and coped with the uneven surface more effectively than Sodbury, so it was no surprise when they took a deserved lead following a speculative strike that looped over the head of home goalkeeper Reagan Richardson.

This seemed to wake Old Sodbury from their collective slumber and the hosts dominated for a 20 minute spell, during which time birthday boy Harry Trigg netted a deserved equaliser. A mixture of good goalkeeping and wayward finishing left Sodbury feeling they should have been in front as the first half ended.

The second period belonged to a resurgent Downend as they sailed into a 4-1 lead. Sodbury’s injury hit squad had left them with no substitute options and with one or two of the boys carrying minor knocks. Ross Womack’s late consolation was just that and Old Sodbury suffered their first League defeat of the season and their first home League defeat for 15 months.

Sodbury gained confidence from the goal and Callum Heaphy’s excellent wing play resulted in another score before his run and cross provided Womack with his second and Sodbury’s third just before halftime.

The expected onslaught from Keynsham never came, largely due to fine sweeping by Theobald and good organisation from skipper Dan Liddiatt.

Old Sodbury Under 15s visited AEK Boco Juniors hoping to maintain their push for the title however their recent inconsistencies continued and they slumped to a second League defeat of the season.

Old Sodbury started brightly but were troubled by the counter attacking pace of the hosts and conceded two goals in quick succession midway through the half. Sodbury regrouped at the break and enjoyed lots of possession resulting in a penalty which Robbie Foxwell coverted for his 24th goal of the season.

Boco were awarded a penalty of their own as the half wore on but Miles Theobald pulled off a very good save to keep his team in the contest. Sodbury ladies get back to winning ways Cheddar 0 Chipping Sodbury 31 After loosing five games in a row, Chipping Sodbury Ladies got

back to winning ways against Cheddar. Gordano Ladies had earlier cancelled due to a lack of players and the home and away matches were awarded to

Sodbury.

In need of a run out, the team were able to secure a friendly game at Cheddar.

In stark contrast to previous weeks the teams kicked off in glorious sunshine and an fast paced first half ensued and Sodbury found themselves three tries to the good by half time.

Hooker-winger Aileen O’Connell ducked the wall in front of her and dive over for the first try of the day.

A swift move in the backs saw winger Becky Anstey caught just short of the line. She offloaded to Naomi Iles who grounded the ball in the corner, only for a foot to be deemed in touch and the try disallowed.

Shortly after though Sodbury did score, Sammi Poulton to spotting a gap to score.

The third first half try came from Louise Romanowski. With a dummy switch in the middle she weaved her way through defence

to score next to the posts.

Suffering a loss of a prop Cheddar had no choice but to call for uncontested scrummaging forcing Sodbury into a change of play. Despite threatening on many occasions the score remained the same into the second half.

The remainder of the game was dominated by the forwards despite a high penalty count, Cheddar were unable to utilise their advantage and Chipping Sodbury held out.

Aileen OConnell scored her second of the day, and Naomi Iles also scored a try to make it five tries without reply, the extras added by both Paige Muxworthy and Michelle Deverill.

Sodbury in 4th after tough March Chipping Sodbury endured a torrid March, winning just one out of four and loosing ground on the top three in the Gloucester Premier League.

Their emphatic 40-0 win over struggling local rivals Frampton Cotterell came after loosing to North Bristol, a 50-0 mauling at high flyers Cirencester and a closer defeat to Berry Hill.

Chipping Sodbury 1st XV – 17 Berry Hill 1st XV – 24 WITH Sodbury’s headlinemaking fly half and star performer Dan Bradley struck down with pneumonia and taken to hospital the team called upon the vast experience of Steve Romanowski.

And it wasn’t long before Romanowski made his presence felt, converting an early penalty following a Maximus Gallagher interception and 35 metre break deep into the visitor’s half. The 3-0 lead evaporated quickly when Berry Hill surprised everyone when their flanker jumped over a ruck and burst

free for an unconverted try.

Romanoski was called into points scoring action again when Sods built enough pressure to force another penalty to retake the lead 6-5. On the cusp of half time, line-out virtuoso Matt Cook yielded three more points with what was arguably the move of the half. Securing a line-out 40 metres out, man of the match Cook found Lee Ralph on a rampaging run. Ralph was supported by Dave Guest who secured quick ball passing through two rucks and a maul before Berry Hill infringed, allowing Romanowski to kick his third penalty.

to 12 -5 early in the second half as Sodbury began to stretch their legs out wide. Berry Hill levelled the game after 15 minutes following a series of Sodbury penalties that they opted to kick for touch or scrummage. Berry Hill scored after the third scrum.

Sodbury showed their strength of character and negotiated their way back up field to within striking distance of Berry Hill’s try line. When Hill infringed Sods elected to kick for touch. Hill came back with a carbon copy of their previous try to tie the game 17-all with just 10 minutes remaining. They might also have scored a long-range effort had it not been for a lastditch try-saving tackle by Ralph.

Hill were able to turn the screw in the last minute and ultimately broke Sodbury hearts when they moved the ball from yet another 5 metre scrum and after six phases went in next to the posts.

Rugby juniors celebrate 25 years CHIPPING Sodbury RFC is marking the silver anniversary of its youth section.

It came about in October 1991 at the time of the second Rugby World Cup with England loosing 6-12 to Australia in the final at Twickenham.

Mike Palmer phoned the club to ask if there was a junior section and he spoke to Laura Richards the ladies’ captain and wife of the club chairman. She told Mike there was no junior structure at the club and asked him if he would like to start one.

Mike responded to the challenge and his son Ben started cajoling a few of his friends to come to the club and try their hand at a game that most of them knew nothing about.

It all began with a few dads and their sons meeting at 2pm on Saturday afternoons on the training pitch with a few balls and cones and doing basic drills.

The numbers at the start were very small, but after a while they increased and four of the dads, Mike Palmer, Nigel Jarrett, Paul Willis and Geoff Waters put some money in a kitty and formed the junior section with Mike as chairman.

The ethos from the start was to encourage youngsters to make

new friends, learn basic handling and tackling skills and discipline while at the same time enjoying participating in a great sport.

Mike was a firm believer in ensuring that the main priorities were to ensure that all children participated in games irrespective of their ability and that coaching should follow strict guidelines as lay down by the RFU. It was also of paramount importance that the children were always in a safe environment both on and off of the pitch In the early days the club were very lucky to have a lot of help and guidance from Alan Muckle who was the RFU Youth Development Officer for Bristol.

Alan was an ex Royal Marine physical training instructor and later moved on to become a fitness adviser for Formula 1 racing teams. He was committed to introducing junior rugby and organised a series of coaching and skills courses.

The first fixture was away to Gloucester Spartans but at that time they had no shirts. Further fundraising allowed the club to purchase new kit for all of the teams and by the end of that first season the section grew to 50 players with teams from Under 8

The youth team’s first outing in 1991 to Under 12.

On November 7th 1992 a mixed U10/U11 team played Cotham Park who had formed their junior section in September 1991, in a curtain raiser match at the Memorial Ground before an England B v South Africa game..

All the young players really enjoyed the game with the big match atmosphere and the chance to see England players like Brian Moore, Neil Back and Ben Clarke and the famous South Africa fly half Naas Botha.

that early team of volunteers formed the foundations of what is today a very strong youth and junior section. Many other clubs followed Sodbury’s example and now enjoy youth rugby.

A few of the players, from those early days went on to represent the senior club and have provided team captains and committee members of the main club.

Of the original ‘team’ Geoff is still coaching and Nigel went on to act as treasurer, secretary and chairman of the senior club.
