WHAT IS VEGANUARY?
The recent Veganuary festival has become part of the annual calendar and is attracting a growing number of people every year. But what exactly is it?
Veganuary is an annual challenge run by a UK nonprofi t organisation that “promotes and educates” about veganism by encouraging people to follow a vegan lifestyle for the full month of January.
Since the event began in 2014, participation has more than doubled each year. More than half a million people signed up to the 2021 campaign.

The rise and rise of veganism and vegetarianism won’t have escaped the attention of many caterers over the last few years and that trend is refl ected on menus everywhere. The growth of interest in plant-based diets has been huge and Kantar now says that the plant-based food category is now worth over £1.2bn. Veganism has gone mainstream – which presents an enormous opportunity for caterers to grow footfall, sales and profi ts.
Even many diners who aren’t strictly vegan or vegetarian are turning more and more frequently to meat-free or plantbased options and that includes when they are dining out.
Kantar data suggests that one in fi ve British households has at least one member following a ‘meat avoidance’ or ‘meat reduction’ diet.
VEGAN SPIKE
The recent Vegan festival traditionally sees a huge spike in vegan diets as consumers are challenged to follow a vegan lifestyle for all 31 days of January.
While this festival helps spark interest in vegan and meat-free eating, the effects of the festival are increasingly felt all year round.
The number of people who registered to take part has more than doubled each year since it was fi rst launched in 2014 with around 2 million people taking part last month.The charity behind the festival, however, says that data from Kantar suggests that each year 10 times more people actually participate and try a vegan diet in January than register through the Veganuary website.
Moreover, 93% of participants say they are likely to try veganism again in the future and 40% say they are planning to stay strictly vegan.
Whatever the numbers look like this year, it seems certain that this is a very large market that will be looking for vegan offerings over the coming months and years, a trend that caterers might want to bear in mind as they prepare their menus in 2022.
