While we were enjoying some well-earned rest during the shutdown at Easter, there was a lot for us to celebrate about our products and capability across JLR. Probably the biggest news was that the stunning I-PACE won World Car of the Year, building on our European Car of the Year award the month before. In an unprecedented treble, the I-PACE also won World Green Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year. Ian Callum, who heads-up Design for Jaguar, was understandably delighted and proud of the work done by his team, our engineers, and the extended cross-functional team that all worked together to turn a pioneering concept into ground-breaking reality.

At around the same time, Mitch Evans, the Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver who recently visited us all here at Solihull, won the Rome E-Prix - making it Jaguar’s first motorsport win since 1991 and Mitch’s first top spot on the podium in three years.

We can all share in that success, and feel proud of the achievements of our business, our brands, colleagues and friends. It acts as a reminder that sometimes success doesn’t happen overnight. It can take many months - and sometimes years - of hard work and focus to reap the rewards of our efforts. Perseverance, belief, a burning desire to achieve and a mentality to see problems as opportunities, and to learn and develop our capability, all are attributes that high performance teams possess.

I am sure there will be questions being asked by our (much bigger) competitor board rooms in Munich, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg: “How can this little British company take a leading global position in premium electric vehicles?” We know that when we are at our best, we are not afraid to be pioneers; agile, united around a common goal, we have a huge passion for our products that our customers share.

We don’t follow the crowd. We stand out.

During our recent stand down I saw how we are working together to listen, learn, challenge ourselves and come together to map out a roadmap for positive change. On the Friday before we broke up for shutdown, I spent the morning listening to colleagues in Trim and Final, Body Shops and Paint share their honest reflections, key takeaways and personal commitments to continue to grow as individuals and support each other as a team.

It was one of the most uplifting days I’ve had in this role.

As a plant, we played our part at the end of March to exceed expectations and targets. In a short April month, our month-end WIP was 240 better than our target and our Sales team have recognised a sustained improvement in our ability to meet or beat the delivery commitments. Our WIP targets are now half the level they were 12 months ago - you can do the maths on the financial contribution that is worth. Thank you for the important part you played in that achievement.

Reliable and consistent performance is key. Now we are giving Sales what they want and when they want it, we have to continue to drive out waste, reduce our costs and everyone - including you - can help.

We must continue to drive quality at the source, not fixing problems later in the process. We’ve recently made some improvements to how we assess our product quality in plant by focusing more on the type of issues our customers are most sensitive to. In our quality improvement forums we are spending more time analysing root causes to permanently fix problems, rather than see them recur.

Improving how we communicate with each other is a key priority and I’m really pleased to see a host of actions starting to come to fruition. As part of the Accelerate work-stream, we’ve introduced a new smartphone app for colleagues that includes news, benefits and competitions.

During April, four lucky Solihull colleagues won the opportunity to take home an F-PACE for the weekend.

Congratulations to Ranjit, Claire, Dean and Sonia.

It’s an important reminder for all of us to take a moment to consider our own mental well-being and the well-being of those around us.

Mental health is like our physical health. It’s important we each feel we can talk to someone and get support when we need it. Look out for information on screens, email and in this edition of your magazine for more information.

Hello and welcome to People Talk, the magazine for colleagues at Jaguar Land Rover Solihull.

The clocks have gone forward, the lighter evenings are here and summer is just around the corner! We’ve all had a chance to catch our breath with a well-deserved break over Easter. To keep you going, we’ve packed this edition full of great stories about the fantastic work going on at our plant, and what we are doing to transform our site to help our business be ready for what’s to come in the future.

SO LIHUL L STANDS U P IT WAS AN ENG AGING STAND DOWN FOR SOLIHULL’S GROUP AND PRODUCTION LEADERS

If you thought that Solihull was going to be a ghost town over the recent stand down, you’d be wrong. Our plant was a hive of activity as Group Leaders and Productions Leaders spent the week getting involved in various engagement activities all aimed at breaking down barriers and enhancing our culture.

Over 300 hundred Group Leaders and Production Leaders spent the five days of stand down getting involved in a number of activities ranging from Work Group Briefing Training, Mental Health Awareness Sessions, Pulse Overview Skips and much more. The feedback from the week speaks volumes.

Finishing off the week, each Technology presented back to Solihull’s leadership team how they felt the week went.

Adam Cox, a Production Leader from Body Shop 3 explained, “Stand down gave us a chance to do things we wouldn’t get time to do normally. Myself and other Production Leaders from Body in White spent time to analyse our Pulse results. We had a session where we sat down with our Group Leaders and gave them the opportunity to get anything they wanted off their chests and pull all the punches.”

The feedback was eye opening. Adam continued, “Hearing some of the feedback was a shock and it made clear that we needed to make some improvements. I will be spending more time with my team, recognising them for the great work they do not just making an appearance when something goes wrong. The stand down week started off quite frosty but the

activities really broke down barriers.

We ended the week on a high and will be something we take forward with us, together.”

Rav Bansal is a Group Leader in the Paint Shop who was in over stand down. He explained, “we got the chance to get together in small groups which really helped us be open and honest with each other. The mental health awareness sessions saw a lot of people open up which normally wouldn’t have happened. We shared personal experiences of mental health, myself included.” Being open and honest didn’t stop there. At the end of the week each team in Paint presented back to each other. Rav continued, “It wasn’t easy presenting to a room of over 100 people but the feeling from being open and honest with each other really helped. It

was great to see how much the paintshop wanted to open up, share their feelings and really take it forward.�

Trim and Final saw similar sessions completed and colleagues were also taken through the progress of the new FA3 facility being built in Block One. Both Associates and Group Leaders got the chance to have their say on what they want to see from their new production facility whilst being able to shape the experience they will get from coming to work there.

G RADUAT ION DAY MEET SOLIHULL’S FIRST GROUP LEADER AC ADEMY GRADUATE

“I was apprehensive about what was to come but this course felt really different” - Colin Chambers

Colin Chambers signed up to be one of the first to experience the new Group Leader Academy, wanting to test out his skills after being a Group Leader for the past five years. Little did he know he was going to be the first Group Leader to graduate and act as an inspiration for Group Leaders across Solihull.

Colin has got Solihull running through his veins - specifically the Underbody area of our Body Shops! He transferred over from Longbridge in 1998 as an associate in Underbodies in Body Shop 1. Fast forward 30 years, Colin is now a Group Leader (GL) in Solihull’s newest Underbody area in Body Shop 3.

“I’ve been with the company for a long while now. I started as an associate and did the job for just shy of 25 years before Body Shop 3 was announced to be built. They were looking for people to 8

take the step up to be a Group Leader, so I put my name forward,” said Colin.

“At the time I heard stories of GL’s across the site who had become GL’s but never got trained up to do the job. I naturally had reservations about putting my name forward, but after chatting to my wife, I went for it.”

At the time of building, Body Shop 3 was Europe’s largest all-aluminium Body Shop and part of a huge investment into Solihull which included FA2. To prepare for future models, newly appointed GL’s including Colin were given the chance to play a fundamental part in developing the facility. Colin explained, “My reservations quickly disappeared when we were brought over before production began so we could help with defining ways of working and training to lead teams.”

Skip forward to the summer of 2018.

Colin had been a Group Leader in Underbody’s in Body Shop 3 for the past five years. “I was having a catch-up with my Production Leader, John Byrne who mentioned about the new Group Leader Academy being set up,” said Colin. “I had been thinking around the same time that since originally training as a GL, that had been it. It made me think twice about what I was doing and knocked my confidence a little.”

After chatting with his Production Leader, Colin applied via SuccessFactors and soon after found out he was going to be a guinea pig and one of 15 GL’s to be the first to pilot the academy.

The Group Leader Academy is a twoweek course, which takes existing GL’s through everything they need to know to do their roles effectively.

Over the next three years, it is planned

that every GL will be given the time to complete the refresher course.

“I was made up when I found out I got a place but slightly apprehensive about what was to come,” explained Colin.

“I didn’t really know many of the other GL’s when I turned up on the first day, so it was a case of getting to know each other at the start. The trainers from the IPS team were great and made you feel at home straight away.”

At the end of the course, Colin and his fellow GL’s had to present what they had learned to Solihull’s Leadership Team.

“I would 100% recommend the GLA to any GL’s out there. It was challenging at first. You have to step out of your comfort zone and you have to put everything you think is right to one side. You learn how to do things differently but also why doing it differently can make your life easier.”

The new Learning and Development Academy at Solihull has been designed with interactive learning in mind.

After completing the training, Colin and the other GL’s were asked to complete an evidence pack with how they are putting their new skills into practice.

Colin explained, “At times these courses can feel a bit like your being bashed over the head with a PowerPoint presentation, but this felt really different. It’s even got an Escape Room you spend time trying to get out of!”

At the beginning of April and working alongside his IPS coach, Sylwia Boczarska, Colin made his own piece of Solihull history by becoming the first GL to sign off his paperwork and graduate.

Graduation was made that little bit

sweeter for Colin as the Underbody team then scored 100% in Brilliant at the Basics, one of the first areas in Body Shop 3.

“It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks.

There’s no doubt that what I’ve implemented from the GLA has played its part in helping the team achieve 100%.

Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way.”

Sonia continued, “I didn’t stop. Me and my husband - he works here too - are looking to buy a new house. We spent the weekend driving around where we are looking to move to.

T H R EE IS A MAGI C N U MB E R I-PACE MAKES HISTORY WINNING A WORLD C AR OF THE YEAR TREBLE

Never before has a car scooped three World Car of the Year Awards in one sitting. Well, that was before the Jaguar I-PACE wiped-up at the recent World Car of the Year Awards at the New York International Motorshow.

Akin to Manchester United winning the famous treble, our I-PACE scooped the trio of World Green Car of the Year, World Design Car of the Year, and the biggie - World Car of the Year. This is made all the more amazing when you add in I-PACE’s recent wins of European Car of the Year and the sought-after German Car of the Year. In total, I-PACE has got its hands on 62 awards since it made its first appearance a little over a year ago.

It is award-winning in all the senses.

It wasn’t an easy competition either.

The Jaguar I-PACE came up against electric rival the Audi e-Tron and Volvo’s S60/V60 to claim World Car of the Year.

Very respectable contenders in their own right. The I-PACE follows in the footsteps of its SUV relative, and Solihull built F-PACE, by winning both World Car of the Year and World Design Car of the Year which won the awards in 2017.

Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum was in New York to witness the historic achievement. He said, “designing Jaguar cars is possibly the best job in the world, and I can honestly say that no other project I’ve worked on has been as rewarding as I-PACE. Electric vehicles offer designers unprecedented freedom to rethink the proportions, the profile and the packaging and it’s an opportunity that my team has exploited in full. Winning the 2019 World Car

Design of the Year award, as well as World Car of the Year and World Green Car, is true recognition for their achievements.”

SAVING A PAL L E T LOAD OF CAS H SAVING OVER £1 MILLION BY REPAIRIN G PALLETS

Through implementing more robust processes, organising themselves better and sheer persistence, our Material, Planning and Logistics (MP&L) Operations Pallet Repair team has turned around its operations, saving Jaguar Land Rover hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Led by Dean Clarke, MP&L Operations Supervisor, who joined the business in July after previously working as an Operations Manager for DHL, the team of 13 have revamped how they work saving the business more than £700,000 in just six months. Added to that the team is already forecasting more than £250,000 worth of extra savings already projected for this year.

Dean entered the business just as Project Charge was starting to gather some serious momentum, and quickly spotted 14

a number of opportunities within his department to help improve his team’s productivity and tighten up expenditure.

Crediting much of the success down to his dedicated and experienced team, Dean has managed to make a 30 percent saving against his annual budget, which equates to £716,658, with average repairs now costing 28 percent less than over the last two years. What’s more impressive is that Dean’s team has spent a lot of time looking at improvement opportunities and Kaizens which have meant the team is able to do 16 percent more pallet repairs than they could previously. Amazing!

Dean explains that the success was down to his team getting on-board with the overhaul, adding, “altogether we have raised more than 17 Kaizens over the last six months and come up

with some fantastic ideas. However, a 30 percent reduction in anyone’s annual budget while operating more efficiently, is quite an achievement.”

“It’s all simply about reducing waste and really driving the belief in positive change. I’m very proud of the team and they truly deserve the recognition.

It’s not been easy and, at times beyond frustrating, but getting past those moments and then seeing the end results make it all that more sweeter.”

Dean was keen to address the suppliers the team used and the ordering process. Supported by colleague Rhona Myatt, they challenged quotes for better prices and utilising the IESA procurement tool to find more cost-effective alternatives already approved by the business. As a result, his team has been able to save a significant amount.

Another idea from Roy Hunt and Andrew Wright from the dolly repair team saw the introduction of a rotating collar on the pallet’s A-frame dollies tow hitch. It reduced the need to replace the entire part and saved around 66 percent on the overall cost of the repair.

The decision to switch pallet curtain suppliers saved the department a further £14,000 over five months, and reduced lead times from weeks to just 48 hours, as well as improving the curtain design and material quality. They also integrated their off-site repair supplier loads into the Jaguar Land Rover Transport schedule saved an additional £36,500.

“We are challenging everything we do so as not to take things for granted,” said Dean. “It’s a difficult time and we all need to do our bit to support Project Charge.

“It is also reassuring for the guys that

everything we do collectively makes a difference, and if we can keep driving forward it will help the business in the longterm. But you can’t achieve anything without a team willing to do the legwork to get these ideas over the line. I am proud of my team, they have put so much effort into the last six months. Watch this space as there is more to come.”

JAGUAR RACING MAKE HISTORY BY WINNING THEIR FIRST FORMUL A E RACE

Mitch Evans created a piece of Jaguar Land Rover hstory as he crossed the finishing line at the Rome E-Prix in first place, claiming Jaguar’s first ever Formula-E win and first motorsport win since 1991.

The Rome E-Prix had it all. Qualifying was plagued by rain showers and Mitch pulled out an impressive drive to take second place on the grid, whilst new team mate Alex Lynn took ninth place.

The race itself saw an electrifying start with an early collision and red flag. Undeterred, Mitch gave a scintillating drive, overtaking race leader Andre Lotterer for top place with a few laps left to go. A sterling performance saw Alex Lynn finish in 12th position in his first ever Formula E race.

Drenched in winner’s champagne, Mitch said on his win, “This feels beautiful. It was a fantastic race. The first few laps were tricky in the wet. We had great pace from the beginning, so I really felt confident from the start. I’m so happy 16

for the team and grateful for everyone at Jaguar Land Rover for their support over the past three seasons.

This has really come at a great time.”

What an amazing achievement from Mitch, made all the sweeter by his recent visit to Solihull to meet colleagues and share his experiences from the race track.

A crazy race in Paris followed the success in Rome. Unfortunately the team wasn’t able to make it two wins on the bounce.

SOLIHULL’S PARENTS INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION A few puzzled faces were left looking at each other recently, wondering why some of the workforce at Solihull had mysteriously shrunk in size at the start of May. Proud parents from across our site who applied to the annual ‘Bring your Sons and Daughters to Work Day’ got the chance to show to their offspring the magic they perform at work. It’s safe to say from the looks on some of the faces of our Solihull kids, it proved an inspiring experience.

One proud parent was Andy Duffen who works on the Customer Acceptance Line in FA2. Showing son Lewis the ropes as a Quality Inspector, he said, “My lad always asks me if he can come and have a look at the factory. This has given me the opportunity to show him around, meet my workmates and hopefully give him that little bit of inspiration to possibly want to work here in the future.” It was apparent by the big grin on Lewis’ face that he had a great time.

He explained, “It’s been amazing spending time with my Dad and I’d really like to work here when I’m older.”

The annual ‘Bring your Sons and Daughters to Work Day’ is organised by Solihull’s Education Business Partnership Centre, part of the Responsible Business team.

Reena Kayani who runs the Centre explained, “The day gives a fantastic opportunity for us to inspire our next generation of apprentices, engineers or even Plant Directors, whilst also giving something back to our colleagues.”

AC TIN G RESPON S I B LY YOUR OLD GRIP GLOVES ARE GETTING A SECOND LIFE IN MADAG ASC AR

It was recently announced that all of Jaguar Land Rover’s UK sites send zero waste to landfill, something which has taken a lot of time and dedication to reach. Here at Solihull, one colleague has really thought with a responsible business mindset to play his part.

fiting hundreds of people in Madagascar.

Madagascar, an island off the coast of East Africa, has a population of close to 25 million people. Almost half the population live in severe poverty and at least a quarter of all deaths of children under five in urban areas are caused by water-related diseases.

A standard grip glove used on the lines at Solihull lasts about a week. Over 3,000 colleagues on site need to wear grip gloves as part of their processes and PPE requirements. They also help out with quality.

Imran and his friend, Jabeer regularly set out on humanitarian and fundraising campaigns under the name “Meet your Muslim Neighbours” and visited Madagascar seeing first-hand how many people struggle to get local access to a clean water source.

Many of the young men were digging wells of up to 15 meters with their bare hands to find water. It was at this point Imran had a light-bulb moment and he immediately thought of how the discarded gloves at Solihull could be reused to help out.

Paint shop colleague, Imran Zahroof, has worked at Solihull for over 28 years and during his time he has got through his fair share of grip gloves. Previously, Imran would discard unwanted gloves, but recently had a responsible business mindset change and identified a new way to reuse the gloves and they are now bene22

Imran explained, “it seemed like such a

simple task, take an everyday item that we don’t need anymore and give it new life to help others. For people to be digging with their bare hands astonished me! It was a small place to start but we know it’s already making a difference to these people”.

In a joint effort with our partners DHL and Johnsons, Imran salvaged 600 pairs of gloves which were still fit for purpose elsewhere. Johnson’s who provide our workwear were able to clean the gloves, whilst DHL stepped in to deliver the 30kgs of gloves to the people of Madagascar.

On their next trip, Imran was able to raise some money to purchase an Auger drill, a manual drill that removes the drilled out material. They spent time understanding the landscape and culture, teaching local people the skills to identify the best areas to drill for water, and

then build their own wells using this new equipment and recycled gloves.

One village has just received its second well, for 350 children at their school in Imamba. The first well was for Mousa, a blind man who has never had easy access to water; previously, villagers had to walk up to 5km for water which would be for cooking, cleaning and sanitary use. Mousa now has a well opposite his house, and a whole village of 400-500 people will benefit.

Each new pump and well costs around £200 and this includes a scheme they have set up to help the local economy by paying the Madagascan team a small wage.

Imran said, “The ten days we spent in Madagascar was full of ups and downs.

I experienced poverty like you’ve nev-

er seen before but it was a beautiful experience. It’s quite overwhelming because you go with a soft heart but you also need to be tough as we can’t solve everything for everyone, all at once. When we were drilling for the first well, that moment we hit the water and you could hear it flowing and feel the pressure. Everyone cheered and felt that rush of adrenalin that we’d done it, I’ll never forget that feeling”.

L I FE SAVERS OUR SOLIHULL BUSINESS PROTECTION SUPER HERO’S COME TO THE RESCUE AG AIN

D-Crew were settling into their Saturday morning shift expecting it to be relatively quiet when the emergency phone rang. For one colleague in Body Shop 3, it was a morning which would change his life forever.

Thanks to the quick actions of Kevin Houghton, Sam Blakeman, Laura Dougherty, Carl Spencer and Malcolm Gunter who make up D-Crew, John Powell is still here to tell the tale.

John, a DHL manager, was just about to sit down for a well-earned brew on his overtime shift when his world turned upside down.

Sam Blakeman was manning the Control Room that morning. “You know when a shout is serious,” Sam explained. “The call came through of a suspected heart attack and we had someone on scene in 60 seconds. Luckily we were running a fire safety audit not far from where John was taken ill.”

Business Protection immediately started administering emergency treatment but John’s condition deteriorated and he 28

slipped into unconsciousness suffering a serious cardiac arrest. The Business Protection team performed CPR and used a defibrillator, which is part of their emergency response kit, to deliver two shocks. West Midlands Ambulance Service arrived on scene to continue with the live-saving treatment and transported John to Heartlands hospital.

Twelve weeks on from that fateful day, John, still in recovery, came back to Solihull to shake D-Crew’s hands and give his thanks in person.

“I remember getting to work and that was about it,” John said. “My family told me afterwards I was rushed straight into emergency theatre, placed in an induced coma four times and I didn’t wake up for seven days.”

John who has worked at Solihull in logistics for over 15 years spent a further month in hospital before being sent home to recover more. John explained, “my wife has still not forgiven me, during my coma it was my wedding anniversary, birthday and my daugh-

ters birthday. She’s not let me off yet!”

Solihull’s Business Protection life savers provide fire, medical and security cover to our site, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In 2018 they attended 1317 emergency incidents on the Solihull site with a large proportion of these being for colleagues in need of medical treatment.

Mark Stefanou, Senior Business Protection Supervisor explained, “all of our response teams train exceptionally hard for situations like John’s. Our goal is to deliver around the clock rapid emergency response service for our colleagues. It’s what we do this job for, “ finding out that we played our part in helping John survive.”

It’s not just Business Protection at Solihull who are saving lives. Their counterparts at Whitley have recently won an award from the West Midlands Ambulance Service after administering life-saving CPR to colleague Paul Wagstaff after a serious heart attack.

ENGINE MANUFACTURING CENTRE The EMC's Education Business Partnership Centre has hosted its annual Bring your Son and Daughter to Work event, by inviting young adults whose family members work at the facility along to experience what it's like to work in a world class manufacturing environment.

A RO U ND THE BUS I N E S S THE L ATEST JLR NEWS EVOQUE GIVES A TRUE FIVE-STAR PERFORMANCE The new Range Rover Evoque has become the latest Land Rover to be awarded the maximum, five-star EURO NCAP safety rating.

Scoring 94 percent for adult occupancy, it meant that it is now the safest product Jaguar Land Rover produces. It also scored highly on child occupancy with 87 percent.

Some cracking new tech helped the Evoque score so highly, including Emergency Braking, Lane Assist and Rear-View mirror camera, which all come fitted as standard.

NEW DEFENDER REACHES DEVELOPMENT MILESTONE By the time the new Defender makes its public debut this year, it will have passed more than 45,000 individual tests in some of the most extreme environments on earth.

Engineers have tested in the 50-degree heat of the desert, the sub 40-degree cold of the Arctic Circle and all the way up to 10,000 feet in the Rock Mountains.

Adrian has worked in manufacturing for over 27 years, with all of that time in the automotive industry. Before starting at Jaguar Land Rover, Adrian worked for both Honda and Nissan.

Adrian joins us from his previous role leading our Press Operations teams at Solihull, Castle Brom and Halewood. He has a great deal of experience in Trim and Final after previously heading up the same department for Honda at its Swindon factory. If you ever see Adrian out and about and want to talk about your experiences working in Trim and Final, he’s more than happy to stop and have a chat.

Playing the piano! I started having lessons when I was seven and went onto achieve grade eight when I was 17 which is no mean feat. My first job was...

Working for John Laing at Sizewell B Power Station during the construction when I was 17. I was a fitter’s mate servicing concrete mixers for the construction teams and fabricating steelwork for the concrete shuttering. It was a great experience and taught me a lot about working within a team and not being frightened to ask for help.

My perfect way to relax out of work is…

I enjoy getting out in the open air – so a few hours of mountain biking with a group of like-minded friends on a sunny day in the Cotswold’s is my way of relaxing. It’s always good when topped off with a final pit stop for a couple of pints.

My most embarrassing moment was...

It’s not an embarrassing moment, but I am very proud to tell people I work for Jaguar Land Rover. Sometimes people mention the quality of our products. I am sure this is something we all encounter and something we can prevent happening by highlighting issues so we can solve problems before our customers experience them.

Nothing is impossible if we work as a team and keep on going until we get there. This is a mantra I want everyone at JLR to have.

I have had many proud moments at work, but what I am most proud of is the 27 years that I have spent supporting manufacturing in the UK.
