CHAPTER 3

Implement Hyper-V H

yper-V is the hypervisor and hardware virtualization platform incorporated into Windows Server 2016 as a role. Using Hyper-V, you can create virtual machines (VMs) that consist of virtualized equivalents of computer hardware, storage resources, and network components, such as network interface adapters and switches. VMs function like physical computers, but administrators can easily save them, move them, and reconfigure them to accommodate their needs.

Skills in this chapter: ■

Install and configure Hyper-V

Configure virtual machine (VM) settings

Configure Hyper-V storage

Configure Hyper-V networking

Skill 3.1: Install and configure Hyper-V Hyper-V is a Windows Server 2016 role that makes it possible to create virtual machines on which you can install an operating system and use as though it is a separate computer. A server running Windows Server 2016 that has the Hyper-V role installed is known as a host. The virtual machines that you create in Hyper-V are known as guests.

This section covers how to: ■

Determine hardware and compatibility requirements for installing Hyper-V

Install Hyper-V

Install management tools

Upgrade from existing versions of Hyper-V

Delegate virtual machine management

Perform remote management of Hyper-V hosts

Configure virtual machines using Windows PowerShell Direct

Implement nested virtualization
