RICARDO ARTILES

2023 2025

Serie Negra

In the heart of Caracas, an artist quietly cultivates a body of work that, though unknown to many, exudes a magnetic force—one that provokes curiosity and wonder. Born in London in 1956 and now living in the eastern part of the capital, Ricardo Artiles has nurtured his passion for art since childhood, showing an innate talent for drawing and painting. Despite the detours and obstacles that life has placed in his path, his creativity has persisted like an underground current, flowing silently yet with immense power.

Ricardo draws inspiration from the renowned French painter Pierre Soulages, celebrated for his masterful use of black. With steadfast dedication, he embarks on a meticulous exploration, using simple, everyday materials found in his surroundings to craft his own interpretation of black.

Working with plaster, industrial talc, and white glue as his primary materials, he patiently builds layers upon the canvas—a process that demands both discipline and devotion. As these layers accumulate and dry, the artwork takes shape, revealing intricate textures that invite deep contemplation. By incorporating black, purple, and gray acrylic pigments, he carefully defines the tone and atmosphere of his compositions, creating canvases that seem to both absorb and reflect light in striking ways.

More than an aesthetic investigation, this series serves as a meditation on the fleeting nature of existence—a dialogue between darkness and light that urges the viewer to reflect on the complexities of life, the tension between presence and absence, the interplay of void and totality.

To delve into Ricardo’s work is to embark on a journey—not only through an intricate palette of hues but also through profound existential inquiry. In Seashore 1, the nocturnal coastline becomes a symbolic landscape where transformation and existential unease intertwine. The slow, dense waters and the undulating horizon lines seem to foreshadow looming tempests and radical change, while the interplay of purples, grays, and heavy textures conjures an ocean that moves with a haunting, almost ominous stillness.

The painting’s nocturnality evokes the specter of death—not as a moment of release, but as an embodiment of the anguish provoked by the inevitable, by the dread of uncertainty, by the fear of not being.

Artist Statement

Earlier this year, a friend sent me a video about Pierre Soulages, the French artist who passed away in October 2022 at the age of 103. That video profoundly changed my life. I instantly felt a deep connection— the king of light over black—a revelation that both moved and astonished me. It confirmed what I had long sensed but had not fully embraced. In that moment of reflection, I made a decision: to devote myself entirely to my passion for drawing and painting, which until then had remained on the periphery of my life. I immersed myself in the act of creation, surrendering to pencil and brush with complete dedication.

At the core of my work is a continuous exploration of materials, composition, and expressive possibilities— primarily through painting. I construct relationships between form and space, maintaining a delicate equilibrium where, at times, the very nature of the materials dictates the outcome. This dynamic process gives rise to intricate textures, subtle flashes of light, and unexpected variations within the pictorial space. The interplay of textures is particularly crucial, as it allows me to introduce depth and movement, transforming the surface into something both tactile and immersive

Conceptually, my approach is grounded in research, incorporating visual, textual, and contextual narratives to enrich my pieces. This analytical process not only enables me to evaluate and refine my work but also fosters new dialogues that deepen the emotional and visual experience. Experimentation is essential—I am constantly exploring new materials and techniques to push the boundaries of my practice.

Serie Negra

The Serie Negra is an investigation into light and texture in their purest form. My aim is to create a body of work that invites contemplation, minimizing the role of color in favor of a heightened awareness of form and contrast. Black serves as the foundation, an essential element in relation to light—it shifts, transforms, and reacts dynamically to its surroundings, altering its presence depending on the source of illumination, even changing its character throughout different times of the day.

To achieve this effect, I employ various techniques to create intricate textures that influence the luminous intensity of the surface, adding dimension and movement to the work. Through the dialogue between light and texture in this series, I seek to engage the viewer in a space of reflection and deep observation.

Me emocionó y sorprendió.

The artist is nothing more than an inspired craftsman, rarely with moments of light beyond his will and by the grace of heaven, the work of his hands becomes art.
