Energies,symbols,abstraction–oldthingsarepulledoutofthedrawerandadapted.Idealwithconceptsthathaveinterested humanitysinceitsinception.Iaskmyselfwhylifeexists,whichforcesmovemasses,andwhichrelationshipsexistamongpeopleand betweenhumansandnature.Noanswertomyquestionpresentsitselfinmyworks.Theatypicalstyleofrepresentationinvitesdifferent pathsofthought.Sculptureslike"Bruja"showaminimization,asection.Inspirationcanstillbetracedintheabstractionofform.In othersculptureslike"Supervulcan,"thetitlealreadyindicatesthestartingpointoftheidea.Butinordernottoremaininrealityandto exploitthefullpowerofart,toformallyrevealnewworldsortodepicttheenergiesbehindthings,"Supervulcan"isaninnerportraitof avolcanoandareflectiononinterconnectedness.Withtheseplayfulapproaches,Iexploregeneralcontemporarythemes,incorporate thelatestdiscoveriesfromthedigitalworldintomywork,andinevitablyrecognizeaspectsofmyselfinmypieces.Thereductionof formsreducestherepresentationtoitsessence,creatingathree-dimensionalsymbolthatstandsformorethanjustourtime.Iam interestedintheconnectionbetweenthepresentandthegeneralhistoryofhumanity,butalsoofouruniverse.Thisconnectiontothe superhumanisthereasonforourwonderandthusalsoforourevolution.

Recentworkssuchas"Gotas"and"Bouquets"addresscurrentcrisesrelatedtoclimatechange.Thistopicwillinevitablydefineour centuryandwillhavethegreatestimpactonourlifestyles.Inthisecologicalsense,myworkingmethodisclassicallyanalog.Although ourcurrenteraischaracterizedbytheautomationofwork,Iwanttomakeastatementagainstthis.Ibelieveincraftsmanship;acraft thattakesyearstomasterandwhoseworkingprocesstakestime;timethatleadstoamoreintuitiveresult,perhapsevenmore passionatethanamachine-printedproduct.

Myworksthusspeakofsomethinggreaterthantheapparent.Forme,artiscommunication,bothvisualandemotional.Iwantmywork tobeasmultifacetedascommunicationitself.Abstractionhelpsusempathizewiththeobjectsanddiscoverourselvesandourown liveswithinthem.Forme,asuccessfulsculptureinvitesustoconsideritasawholeandtoquestionthetitle,thetext,ortheassociated context.

Fire,clash,massesinmotion

Thisworkexplorescomplexconnectionsbetweendistant events.Theshapeofthevolcanoandthetitlesuggestthe explosivenatureofsuchamixture.Currently,thesituationis clearlyescalatingbetweencrises,protests,andwars.Justasin thePhlegraeanFields,thissituationisameltingpotofdiverse events,allofwhicharesomehowconnectedtooneanother andtriggeramutualeffect.Aproblem,asingleissue,canno longerbeviewedinisolation,butisalwayspartofalarger system.Everythingmustbethoughtofgloballyandinrelation tooneanother.Thepathsarecomplex.

Thesculpture“Energies”isanabstractionofthetwoworldessentialenergies:lightandwater.Theselivelihoodsgivingelementsgiveus energytoexistandprogress.Ihavetransformedthesesystemsintooneabstractedmysticalsymbolfortheirmagicalandbeneficialeffect toshow.Thepowerofthecollisionbetweentheseinfactoppositenaturalenergiesisreflectedinthesharpshapeofthesculpture.

Riseandfall.Rhythm.Opposingenergies. Everyonestrivesforsomethingorisontheir waysomewhere.TheworkVSisareflectionon goalsinlife,theirpace,andtheirmeaning.

Justasinasmallwaywithanindividual,history alsodevelopslikeapendulum.Assoonasthe peakisreached,itquicklygoesdownhillagain. Whatwasonceprogressisrevisedand replacedbyanewidea,whichinturnis eventuallyrevisedoreveneliminated.

Iuseaveryminimallycarvedskitouringslope torepresentthisconcept.Forme,thisbest representsthenaturalcourseofthings.

“Codadicavallo”isasculpturemadeofwoodshavingsthathangsfromtheceiling.Asan installation,theformisreminiscentofagigantichorse'stail,whichgivesthesculptureits name.Iborrowtheambiguityofthewordformysculpture.Thetwoapplicationshave aestheticsandthedemandforneatnessascommondenominators.However,Icannot claimthelatterformysculptureanddonotwantto.Ontheotherhand,thissculptureis aboutstandardsintheartworldanditsdecency.Insteadofthecarvedsculpture,i.e.what isleftofthecarvedblock,Ipresentwhathasbeencarvedawayasart.Unlikethe ostentatiousnessofasculpturethatmuststandonapedestal,Ishowtheexactoppositein aworkthatischaracterizedbydelicacy,fragilityandfreedomofform.

Thiswovenscrapispartofagiantbagthatwrapsaroundthestairwellofagrocery store.Intimeswhensustainabilityisbeingdiscussed,Ithinkit'simportantthatthe issuebeaddressedholistically,includingalleverydayconsumergoods,suchasbags.

"Fuga"(Italian)meansescape.SimilartothemusicallawsofJ.S. Bach'sfugues,wetodayslipintothedepthsofthevirtualworld. Itisadeepeningwithaconstrictingdynamic.Thetipsofthe spiralspointinalldirections,buthaveacommonvanishing pointdownwards.Theworkapproachestheimaginary movementofalgorithmsontheinternetthatunconsciously guideourbehavior.Similartoliquidsconverginginafunnel,this symbolizeshowdifferentinterestsleadtoanindividualandtheir character.Atthesametime,itrepresentsthemovementofour concentrationandabsorptioninthought.Thespiralsshowthat weareincreasinglycaptivatedbyourowninterests,sothatwe movemoreandmoreintheirdirectionandlosetouchwiththe outsideworld.Likeapolyphonicpieceofmusic,peoplewrap themselvesaroundtheirownbeingwithallitsfacets.

Thesculpture"BigNoodle"isan auto-referentialsculpture.Asan Italian,Ioftenhavetohold discussionsaboutpasta.The giganticexecutionofthepastaas asculptureisintendedasa referencetohumans:sometimes overcookedandlimp,sometimes rawandproud.Inadditiontothis association,Iaminterestedinthe socialstatusofpasta.Everything canbeoversexualized,including pasta.Thepastaasamalegenital organ,probablyassociatedwith derogatoryconnotations,islike theelephantintheroom.The sculpturecombinesseveral feelingsatonce:thesanctityof theItalianstaplefood,which mustalwaysbetakeninto considerationwhenmeetingnew people,andthefragilityofmale pride.Thepastabecomes inedibleanddifficulttodigest, yetalwayspresent.

Bignoodle

"Gotas"(Spanish)aredropsthatformacolumn, notariver,justarhythm.Thissculptureisabout risingenergyand,atthesametime,a downward-strivingforcethatfertilizesthesoil. Water,asasymbolofabundance,hashelda mysticalroleinmanyculturesthroughouthistory. Forthissculpture,Ibaseditonthetree,aswood ismymostfrequentlyusedmaterialinart.It strikesmeasamasterpiecehowwaterflows fromtherootsupthroughthebarktothemost remotetwigsandleaves,nourishingthem.We oweournutrientoxygentoplantphotosynthesis. Iwantedtodedicateatotemtothiscycleof nature.The"Gotas"column,liketheBrancusi column,couldbeimaginedasendlessand representsrespectfortheingeniouscycleofthe earth.

Accordingtoanancientitalianstory,theunusualdeformationofolivewoodisareactionofthetreesthemselvestoviolence. WhenRomansoldiersweresearchingforasuitablepieceofwoodforJesus'cross,thisrumorspreadamongthetrees.Inprotest againstviolence,thetreesbegantotwistinalldirectionsuntilnobranchwasstraight,sothesoldierscouldn'tfindanysuitable olivewoodtouseforJesus'cross.

Thesculpture“Ginza” isavegetalform inspiredbythetree.In thisartisticperiodofa fewyearsagoIwas concernedwith makingthevitalityof naturevisualthrough thetransformationof thematerialintonew organicforms.The armsof“Ginza”cling tothetrunkofitsown woodresemblingan embrace.

Therearesomanythingsinlifethatsapyourenergy.Itis difficulttofindplacesormomentsthatcounteractandgivelife energy.SotodayI'mwitnessingawidespreadflightofthe populationintotheworldofsorceryandmagic.Itakeupthis topicandderivedmytitle(bruja=Spanishwitch)fromit.In ordertoescapetheconstantdistractionandtokeepone'sown focusinview,awidevarietyofhealingmethodsand concentrationpracticesareused.Mymethodisasculptural onethataimstoradiateenergyinalldirectionsanddrawthe viewerintothemselves.Ihavesculptedthisessentialshapewith thetwoprotrudingconicalbreasts,afterprimevaldepictionsof culticfiguresofwomen.TherearemanyissuesIassociatewith thisabstractrepresentationofbreasts.Ontheonehand,of course,thewarmthofmaternalcareforherchild,whichweall oncewere,droolingonthemilkofdreams,andontheother hand,thedirectionofthefuture,thispurposefulformpointsto theoutside,definesthehorizonand,likeasymbolofluck, promisesusthefertileland.Therigidformbespeaks excitement,butanexplicitlyfeminineone,contrastingthe concealedphallicsymbol.

Withherinstallation,ValeriaStullesserdemonstratesthatnatureissubjectto decayandtransience.Humanbehavior,itsexploitationofnature,andthe effectsofclimatechangehavefar-reachingconsequences.Allthatremains oftheoncebeautifulbouquetarebone-likestructures."Naturehasbecome aresourcefromwhichmandrawsenergyforhisactivities,whichinturnfalls backonmanasaburdenandbecomesnaturamorta,"theyoungartist says.
