The historic railway town of Darlington is more than 160 miles by road from Peterborough, but its position on the East Coast Main Line means the town can be reached in a little over and hour and half by train. Fares can, of course, be expensive but booking well enough in advance can bring the adult return fare down to around £45.

The 09.48 weekday train runs non-stop to York, and arrives at the County Durham town just after 11.20. Leaving the station by the ‘vehicular’ exit on the north side brings you to Parkgate, where there

are several pubs – the Black Swan boasts an attractive tiled exterior and just beyond the Hippodrome theatre, sits the Greyhound, but neither were offering real ale, so we continued beyond the dual carriageway to the Glittering Star, a typically unspoilt Samuel Smith pub with four individual rooms and an 11am opening time. Recently reopened and refreshed after a year of closure, this pub offers a friendly welcome, etched glass windows and a pleasant drinking environment, however like to many of its sister pubs, the handpulls have now been removed. So, a right

turn into Crown Street, lies the William Stead – named after a former editor of the stand just across the road, and who famously perished on board the Titanic. Serving from 9am, it’s a Wetherspoon pub, with Pennine, Sharps and Greene King, though ‘tap takeovers’ are an occasional feature. We took this opportunity to devour an uncharacteristically early lunch.

Just beyond the Cornhill Centre on Priestgate is the Red Lion – one of the oldest pubs in the on Greene King beers.

Into the central square alongside the landmark Market Hall Clock Tower, the Tubwell Tap offered a single real ale in the shape of New Zealand Pale from Cheadle Brewery at just £2 a pint, and the Quays (formerly the Queens Head) next door offers regular live music and beers from Black Sheep and Wychwood, but neither were on great form on our visit. Past the keg-only Golden Cock, the Pennyweight was warm and welcoming, but the beers from Otter and St Austell were again, substandard.

With initial impressions of the town at a low ebb, we crossed the Market Place to the Hole in The Wall, and it was from here that our spirits started to lift. The Edwardian tiled exterior and the relaxed ambience were welcome features, and the beer range, from Tynebank, Camerons, Sharps, S43 and Wadworth proved to be a big hit. There’s also a pleasant upstairs drinking area and decent food.

Back past the Market Tower, just to the right of Binns Department Store, a discreet lane – Mechanics Yard – houses

the renowned Quakerhouse ‘Real Ale & Rock Bar’. Open from 11am, this former coffee house’s walls are covered with Camra awards including both Darlington and North East Pub of the Year. Live music features weekly in the main bar, and there’s a spacious upstairs function room, but the real USP of this place is its spectacular range of up to 10 ever changing expertly kept ales, mainly from micros, and including a couple brewed in the cellar below on their own tiny brew plant.

Owned by Brian “The Scientist” Dourish, and brewed by “Mad” Rob Brunton, Mad Scientist brews are only available here.

With caricatures by regular Bizz also adorning the walls, there’s plenty of talking points at this We had a peep at Hoskins on Blackwellgate, but far more interesting was the Voodoo Café on Skinnergate. Open from 10am, this Latin American themed bar offers a couple of changing real ales amid a dazzling selection of 120 rums and 80 gins, including a 1937 Macallan – a snip at £150 per

glass. Run by the entertaining Les Fry, this is a must visit bar – you may event be tempted by one of the cocktails (the bar was a of the Year awards). The ORB, a former hairdresser’s shop, on nearby Coniscliffe Road was not due to open until 5pm, but with the doors open to receive a delivery, I cheekily stepped in and had a quick chat with manager Daryl Clough. Open since 2017, doing a brisk trade, offering six mainly from the North East, with currently three beer festivals per year where the range grows to 30 beers, and has been awarded the local Camra Pub of the Year 2019. Named after its sister brewery (Orchard Road Brewery) the ORB opens earlier (3pm) on Thursday/Friday/Sunday and from 12pm on Saturdays.

Another Micropub has recently opened – the House of Hop on Houndgate was not however open on the Wednesday when we visited.

Also on Coniscliffe Road, Number Twenty2 is a Victorian former antiques shop, and now a

great traditional ale house with a minimum of eight real ales (up to 12 at weekends). Expect to see three ales from the Village Brewer range brewed on the premises.

For a former Quaker town, Darlington is not short of pubs, and we were keen to try as many as possible, so the remaining targets on our list were rather rushed. The Darlington Flyer on Skinnergate is a former Yates’s, and still feels like one, with a spacious drinking area, pool table and skylights in the ceiling (Black Sheep and

Bombardier from £2.30).

Opposite, Tanners Hall takes its name from the local leather trade, and is a much better branch of JD Wetherspoon than the William Stead, with a good range of ales from Rudgate, Pennine, Marstons, Milestone, Lymestone and Maxim from just £1.89. On Bondgate, the Old Yard Tapas Bar is an attractive award-winning ex-pub which still feels like a good old-fashioned boozer with separate rooms, an agreeable ambience, good ales from Pennine, Ringwood and, St Austell and, of course, great food.

Next door, the Old English Gentleman, is a former Tap & Spile, now offering a limited range of beer (Doom Bar and Landlord on our visit), with prices from £2.50. The Turks Head (Marston’s), also on Bondgate, appeared to be closed, so we moved onto the Britannia on Archer Street – a pleasantly small local’s pub, with a long-held reputation for good beer, and still offering six beers from Yorkshire and the Glittering Star north-east including

two from Yorkshire Heart.

Half Moon just across the ring road on Northgate, open all day from 12pm, and another good real ale pub with six everchanging cask ales, including a couple from their own Crafty Pint nano-brewery and a couple up Northgate brings you to Corporation Road, home of the Darlington Snooker Club – a recent North East Area Club of the Year, which still boasts 10 snooker tables, housed in a large hall reached by a well-worn looking staircase. Card carrying Camra members are welcome, and there’s an extensive range of up to eight mainly local beers from the likes of Yorkshire Dales and Mithril breweries.

The main station can be reached in around 20 minutes from here, but the adventurous might like to try a further North Road Station, situated on the Bishop Auckland branch line, and housing the Head of Steam museum, celebrating Darlington’s rich heritage as the birthplace of the passenger railway. There’s still an hourly train service from here to Darlington Station.

A soul and Motown all-dayer will be taking place at the Woolpack, Stanground on 27 July. Starting at 12pm, the event, hosted by Retro Nights, celebrates 60 years of Motown Records.

are the Down County Boys, the UK’s longest established authentic bluegrass band, who play the Stahl Theatre on 9 July. This year’s John Clare Festival in Helpston is to be over the weekend of 12 – 14 July. Always a good excuse to enjoy the WI teas in the village hall, or a pint at the Blue Bell (where Clare was a potboy), plus Stamford’s Pint of Poetry.

Seven Stars: Ancient Astrology and the English Public House

By Hugh Kolb, Unicorn, paperback, £15 When you next visit your local, pause for a moment and consider the history of the pub’s name. Some titles will be blindingly obvious, others very obscure, while some traditional inn titles have been obscured by modern renaming.

It is obviously something that Hugh Kolb has taken seriously and this engrossing 256-page study delves into the name Seven Stars. The aptness of this name comes from an ancient belief that the star cluster of the seven Pleiades represented a bunch of grapes in a Dionysian and Bacchic world view.

There are in fact many interpretations as to the origin of the name Seven Stars, most of them deriving from ancient astronomy, and the author examines these along with some pubs bearing the name going back to the 14th century in this country from Cornwall to Northumberland.

If nothing else, this book will make you want to seek out various alehouses carrying this name so that you can check details for yourself. Be warned, it could prove thirsty work.

There is also a resume on the general history of pub signs plus reference to relevant alternative names such as The Plough, religious interpretations, plus many more fascinating diversions.

If this splendid publication marks the start of a series of volumes exploring the history of pub names, I had better start putting up more shelves.

David Brown Watch the Signs! Watch the Signs! Arthur Chappell, paperback, £10 The subtitle of this slim volume is “Pub signs relating to science fantasy and horror” and that promised much.You’ll know that we at Rhythm and Booze have a love own series of articles On the (Time)Lash about pubs that have in Doctor Who has clocked up over 30 instalments. So, this book should be on to a winner with us. Unfortunately, it is a little bit disappointing.

It does cover pub signs featuring mythical creatures (the moves on to folklore, science and space. A chapter is devoted to pubs associated with authors, I’ve been in Oxford’s Eagle and Child, home from home for the Inklings, and passed the Edgar Wallace in London (usually closed whenever I was there). So, what it covers is interesting, as far as it goes.

Mention is made of a steampunk themed tavern, Cogs, in Birmingham. Peterborough had HG’s – the HG Wells-themed (and suitably decorated) pub that opened in 1996 by Jon Pertwee and a couple of Daleks. OK, it closed around eight years later, so perhaps didn’t manage to establish itself in the nation’s fannish collective memory.

No mention is made of the Flying Swan that appears in several books by Robert Rankin.

Based partially on the Bricklayers Arms in Brentford, when that pub closed to be converted into homes, his fans had a steel swan mounted above the front door.

Too obscure an author? OK then, how about the Arthur C Clarke book Tales From the White Hart, the pub of which was based on the White Horse just off Fleet Street where socially in the mid-1950s.

Couldn’t an archive photo have been found for that?

I’m sure other fans will be able to make suggestions, so while this book might be a disappointment, a second edition could be much better.
