Dogs with Special Hearts Resucing and rehoming animals is a team effort and we would not be able to save animals if it were not for dedicated adopters, donors, and volunteers. Dogs come to us from all different circumstances. Sometimes they have been caught up in unfortunate life circumstances through no fault of their own. Sometimes animals come to us with conditions that the animal shelter just cannot afford to treat, but we don’t think this should prevent their chance of adoption. Recently, we have had several dogs test positive for heartworm disease. Continue reading on page 5 to learn more about these dogs, the disease, and how you can help!

What is heartworm disease?

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets, spread by mosquitoes. The disease is caused by worms that live in the heart and blood vessels of the lungs of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to the other organs in the body. Heartworm disease is easy to prevent with regular use of preventative medication through your veterinarian. Treating heartworm disease is more complicated.

How can you help?

ADOPT

Meet our dogs with special hearts!

6 year old beagle mix Alex Trebark

I absolutely love stuffy toys, and I enjoy carrying them around with me.

4 year old beagle mix Vanna White

I’m a sweetheart & everyone who’s gotten to interact with me falls in love.

What does a positive heartworm test mean?

Dogs in our care have tested positive for heartworms. This means they were bitten by a mosquito carrying heartworms and has become infected. This test does not tell us how long the dog has been affected, how many worms are present, or whether any serious damage has already occurred. A veterinarian will need to do further testing to better understand the disease. This can include more blood tests, urinalysis, radiographs (x-rays) and echocardiogram.

What will heartworm treatment be like for the dog? Dogs with heartworm disease can live high quality lives as long as they are given appropriate care. Without treatment, however, heartworm disease will worsen and can lead to more serious illness, even heart failure. While heartworm treatment has a high success rate, it requires patience as treatment takes place in stages of several months. Cage rest is very important part of heartworm treatment. The dog needs to be kept quiet but entertained throughout the treatment period. Information from American Heartworm Society

2 year old beagle mix Bob Barker

I enjoy sitting on laps and getting lots of attention. I am food motivated and love cuddling.

4 year old boxer/mastiff Wagtastic Beast

I like to go for walks and will flop down, roll over and let you rub my belly.

DONATE!

3 year old beagle mix Drew Hairy

Happy-go-lucky guy that wants to run around and sniff everything.

5 year old beagle mix Wayne Brady

Ball of energy who likes to be close to your face. Need to get used to being indoors.

Use the inserted envelope to donate toward our Nova Fund. This fund is designed to help animals with special needs and will go towards the heatworm treatments for these dogs. Help them fight and defeat this disease!

Success Stories! Whitney KNA Pearl Finds Love

Whitney, a ten year old cat, resembling a pile of mashed potatoes, came to the shelter as an owner surrender in February. She was brought to us because she was too old and didn’t do much anymore. When she first arrived she was very dirty so she had to endure a bath. She was very patient during the ordeal and seemed relieved to be clean. While she was in our care, we learned that “lazy” was her middle name. Everyday staff tried to get her up and about playing in order to try and loose some weight. She was more about relaxing than exercising. But none of that mattered to her new owners who fell in love with her and renamed her Pearl. “I just wanted to say how happy and thankful we are to have her part of our family. She’s doing great and enjoys having her own room. Pearl is the sweetest!,” said her owners a few weeks after taking her to her forever home. We thank her adopters for not over looking her because of her age and weight.

Lulu Gets Her Surgery and a Forever Home

Good things come in small packages. Lulu is 7 lbs of pure love! She is an eight year old long haired chihuahua who came to the shelter after her owner lost her home. Lulu is always ready to hop into your lap or be carried in your arms and shower you with love and affection. After being examined by our volunteer vet, we learned that Lulu had a hernia and that one of her legs was out of joint and had been for some time. The good folks at Heartland Veterinary Clinic gave us an estimate of approximately $500-600 for her hernia surgery plus another $1,000 to repair her leg so it was a combined effort to fundraise in order to make that happen. A foster was lined up who would take great care of her while she waited and recovered from surgery. It was amazing to see the amazing generousity and kindness of donors who donated towards her surgeries. It was not long until we had the funds to give Lulu the surgery she needed in order to have a happier and healthier life. While caring for her in her time of need, Lulu’s foster care providers fell hard for her and adopted her. She was able to get her surgery and a forever home!

140 adoptions since the last newsletter (February 15)! *as of May 15
