Springwell School
The Springwell Musician
Intent
At Springwell School, we believe that music is a powerful tool to support our children’s holistic development. With discussion around music genres, we can provide the children with an understanding for the world in which we live. We aim to develop our pupils’ ability to listen carefully, explore their emotions and develop their self-discipline and creativity. We are ambitious to explore all musical elements with each child so they have a deeper understanding of pitch, tempo and dynamics. At Springwell School, we will also ensure to encourage an active involvement in creating and developing musical ideas using voices and both tuned and un-tuned instruments.
Implementation
At Springwell School, all children are given the opportunity to experience how to play an instrument. In Key Stage 1, children use a variety of percussion instruments from our well-resourced music room, when learning about pitch, pulse, rhythm and dynamics.
In Key Stage 2, children progress further and learn to play the recorder and guitar. At this phase, the children continue to develop their performance, improvisation and composition skills.
Classes in each Key Stage also take part in assembly performances throughout the year and perform in the choir at Christmas concerts and other special occasions.
Curriculum Coverage
The curriculum follows a progression of skills throughout the children’s time at Springwell.
Over the next few pages you will find the progression of skills for each key stage.

A Springwell Musician (Impact)
At Springwell School, our pupils have many opportunities to explore the different aspects of the music curriculum through listening and appraising, creating and exploring, and singing and performing. Children learn about a wide range of genres and take part in activities that capture their imagination and enhance their understanding and experience of music. They are provided with many opportunities to listen, sing, play instruments and make music together.
Assessment
In Springwell School, pupils’ skills, knowledge and understanding of music is assessed formatively through:
• Observation
• Discussion and effective questioning
• Quizzes
• Self-reflection and peer assessment
• Individual and group performances
Once a sequence is covered, teachers assess identifying next steps and recording this information on target tracker
