Message from the President It is with deep gratitude that I reflect upon all of the partners, families, teachers, and colleagues who have been instrumental to SJB’s expansion and financial growth over the past 5 years.

Our 2014-2019 Strategic Plan focused on building financial stability, increasing quality at all sites, and sustaining staff. Within that window of time, we indeed accomplished all of the above.

We strengthened the financial foundation of the agency, while building a very strong Administration, Program, and Teaching Team. At SJB, we believe that our staff is critical to our agency’s success. And so we also focused on providing staff with opportunities to feel valued — among them providing pay increases for 3 consecutive years.

In 2014, our budget was just over $3 million; for the 2018-19 Fiscal Year, our revenue had grown to $10 million. Next year we’re projecting a budget of over $17 million.

Over the past 5 years, our Board of Directors, Executive Leadership, Management, and Staff have worked relentlessly to ensure SJB’s success in all areas of expansion, while improving quality at all sites. Opening new sites is key to our agency as it provides additional needed services to families across Santa Clara County.

In the past 2 years, we’ve expanded from 7 sites to 10 sites. And in that time, we’ve started to serve toddlers, and also develop a plan to sustain staff by increasing agency benefits to improve the work/life balance for everyone. For FY 2019-2020, we're also opening an additional 8 sites.

Words cannot express how excited I am about our future. As President of SJB, I’ve been astounded to witness just how far we’ve come. But there’s still so much more to do...

Our new Executive Director Kelly Mercurio was an integral part of the 2019-2024 Strategic Planning meeting, where she unleashed great plans for our agency’s continued success.

Meanwhile, each and every day, I feel fortunate to be working with such dedicated Board Members, Leaders, Support Staff, Educators, and Partners, all of whom are profoundly impacting the lives of children and families in Santa Clara County.

May we continue to move forward in a spirit of collaboration and service to our community!

The History of SJB Our Values:

SJB Child Development Centers is committed to providing high quality learning environments to support the success and well-being of children and families in our diverse communities.

We believe all children, regardless of economic status, deserve investment by dedicated skilled professionals in warm environments, which educate, engage, and inspire. Since 1971, it has been SJB’s privilege to prepare children and families for brighter and more prosperous futures with innovative services transcending traditional childcare. By providing children with the care and education they deserve and parents with access to the resources they need, we work together to create a vibrant, thriving community.

History:

Our mission stems from the vision of our organization’s founder, Mr. Bill Williams. Mr. Bill Williams wanted to help families establish financial independence by creating a safe place for children of working parents. He also sought to break the cycle of poverty by offering education-based child care; therefore, providing access to the same opportunities as those from more affluent families.

SJB Child Development Center was established with these goals in mind and quickly made a name for itself by being the first in Santa Clara County to offer toddler care, as well as before and after school care.

Working to uphold Mr. Bill Williams’ vision of empowering children and families of Santa Clara County, SJB has 18 sites and multiple programs that truly support children and families from all income levels.

Mission and Philosophy Mission: SJB Child Development Centers provides high quality developmentally appropriate child development services for children 0-12 years of age to strengthen and support families throughout Santa Clara County.

Philosophy: Our focused approach to early education and child development is exemplified through an ongoing commitment to quality.

At SJB, we set the stage for creating a community of curious learners.

We believe that each and every child is unique, and carries with them their own culture, values, and learning styles. We are conscious about working and teaching each individual child in a way that supports and empowers them.

At SJB, we are also mindful about providing a high-quality environment, which will, in turn, pave the way toward high-quality learning.

We educate and empower children and families through continuous assessments, thoughtful curricula, dedicated educators, professional development, and a deep commitment to family engagement.

About our Future: A Message from our Executive Director In the fall of 2018, a group of people embarked upon a 5-year Strategic Planning process.

Led by our President Sheryll Ebbs, the process involved SJB leaders, managers, Board Trustees, and representatives from Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) - Head Start.

Inspired by the positive changes and growth that had taken place over the last 5 years, the team was passionate about helping to write the next chapter in SJB’s story.

I am honored to express that I was among those present during the planning phase. Being a part of it allowed me to witness the magic that happens when a committed group of individuals come together with the sole intention of improving the lives of children, families, and our community on the whole.

The collaborative effort between both groups was a true testament to the current culture of our agency, one which is rooted in a relationship-based approach. At SJB, we believe that relationships are at the core of everything we do. Knowing this, we aim to cultivate connections and experiences marked by positivity, sustainability, and a team mentality.

The sheer synergy during the planning process was amazing to witness. We came out of it with 3 very strong Strategic Plan Goals, hinged on Marketing & Communication, Workforce Development, and Consistent High Quality & Best Practices.

Moving forward, as we continue to expand and open new sites, the focus will be on increasing quality, ensuring sustainability, and enhancing partnerships.

As we continue to grow, we will remain deeply committed to the families and the communities that we serve. SJB’s core goal is to be the “agency of choice” — a place children look forward to coming to, each and every day. Every time a parent drops off their child at one of our centers, we want them to feel a sense of peace, knowing that their child will be safe and nurtured, and receive high-quality care and education. Meanwhile, we will work to consistently cultivate an environment in which our staff members feel valued and supported.

Above all else, we want this agency to thrive, standing tall as a place that truly speaks to prospective parents, staff, and community partners.

Stepping into the position of Executive Director this year has been a humbling experience. I’m inspired by all of the amazing individuals who surround me, and who are dedicated to changing the lives of children and families in our community.

I look forward to continuing this amazing journey, while watching our treasured agency grow and evolve!

SJB has been in operation for over 48 years, providing free and low cost childcare, as well as dental, vision, hearing screenings, and social-emotional support services for children. In the last 5 years alone, we've worked with 5,014 children, and served 1,167,809 free, healthy meals.

Providing these services is critical to supporting families in being successful in their communities and lives.

Notes: For the 2018-2019 Fiscal Year, SJB's revenue totaled $9,791,282 Revenues came from a combination of the California Department of Education (68%), the Santa Clara County Office of Education (9%), the Community Child Care Council of Santa Clara County (3%), FIRST 5 Santa Clara County (1%), Subsidized fees (3%), Full cost fees (12%), as well as some miscellaneous sources (4%).

By aligning ourselves with other organizations and entities, SJB has been able to provide even more services, resources, and opportunities for children and families in the Santa Clara County.

Our partners have helped us to provide a myriad of much-needed services in our community, which include (but are not limited to) providing free Hearing, Vision, and Dental Screenings every year.
