What’s on in Kingston town centre

Thumbs up it’s Thursday 27th July, 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st August The family favourite Thumbs Up It’s Thursday programme will return each Thursday throughout the school holidays this summer with a host of low-cost and free activities across town for children aged 2-11 years of age. There are plenty of craft workshops, storytelling sessions, fun photo booths, river cruises, face painting and kids eat free offers at various restaurants around town. Activities will take place at various times throughout the day.

Thursday 10th and Thursday 31st August Squeeze every last drop out of summer and take advantage of late night shopping hours across the town, soak up the evening sunshine down by the river with an al fresco supper or pull up a deckchair in front of the fountain for our Summer Nights event. On Thursday 10th and Thursday 31st August Kingston’s Ancient Market Place will be hosting a fun-filled evening complete with a few summery food pop-ups, a bar and entertainment to keep the whole family entertained. There will also be a fantastic line up of live music acts on our summer stage.

Snap a summer selfie at Eden Walk Discover the colourful installation of umbrellas installed at Eden Walk this summer and you could win some fantastic prizes. Rose Theatre Summer Schools There are even more opportunities to keep the kids entertained in Kingston this summer with the Rose Theatre’s summer schools. For 7-12 year olds, the Three Day Courses offer the perfect introduction to performance with a jam-packed schedule of drama and fun, whilst the Play in a Week course aimed at 10-20 year olds offers the chance to participate in a full costumed production. Bentall Centre summer garden

Bentalls 150th birthday 20-23 July Synonymous with Kingston since 1867, when Frank Bentall opened a drapery shop in the town, Bentalls are celebrating their 150th birthday and everyone’s invited to join them. From Thursday 20th through to Sunday 23rd July, the store will be celebrating in style with a host of fun activities including: •T he British Sugarcraft Guild will be building a giant birthday cake in the Living Kitchen on the lower ground floor creating amazing works of sugarcraft that celebrate 150 years of the store •B entalls’ Restaurant on 3 will be serving up a memory lane menu inspired by the Victorian era

• On Saturday 22nd July, the toys department on level 3 will play host to a Punch and Judy show at 12pm, 12.30pm, 1pm and 1.30pm • Special surprises and much more throughout the store

150th Birthday Exhibition On their birthday, Thursday 20th July, Bentalls will be officially unveiling their celebratory exhibition that takes a look back at their 150 year history. This summer will see The Bentall Centre transformed into a magical garden full of space to relax, as well as room for the kids to play. Families can take part in activities throughout the centre from arts and crafts to live shows perfect for children of all ages. International Youth Arts Festival 7th-16th July | Various Locations

Now in its 9th year, Kingston’s International Youth Arts Festival is the UK’s biggest multi-arts festival for performers aged under 27, featuring some of the best new work from talented rising stars. More than 200 events will take place on 7- 16 July including theatre, music, comedy, dance, visual arts, circus and carnival.

Young Folk Monday 10th July, 7.30pm Rose Theatre

Police Cops Tuesday 11th July, 8.30pm, age 16+ Rose Theatre Critically acclaimed comedy blockbuster, with a sold-out runs across the country and gaining five star reviews from The Stage and Edinburgh Festival. It’s 1976 and straight-laced rookie Police Cop Jimmy Johnson is out to avenge his brother’s death. Teamed up with a disgraced, renegade named Harrison, the pair begin to unearth the soily secrets that the case holds.

Fantastic showcase of award-winning folk musicians including Kelly Oliver and Moore Moss Rutter. Between the bars and clubs of Kingston, Claygate and Richmond the great, good and infamous of the folk scene once cut their teeth. Young Folk celebrates this heritage with a night of the finest young folk stars from around the country. Ballet Dreams | London Russian Ballet Company Friday 14th July, 7:30pm Rose Theatre Sea Stories Thursday 13th July, 1.30pm & 7.30pm Rose Theatre The gala show this year is ‘Sea Stories’ a musical theatre triple bill, attended by HRH The Earl of Wessex KG GCVO in his role as President of Creative Youth, the charity that delivers the annual arts festival. Sea Stories includes: The Upside Down Sailor, a musical based on the dramatic survival story of capsized round-the-world yachtsman Tony Bullimore, written by Roxanna Panufnik

Following a hugely successful performance at Sadler’s Wells in 2016, London Russian Ballet School comes to Kingston for a night of incredible and unforgettable dance. Ballet Dreams is a series of divertissements with duets and solos to inspire and thrill. The evening will feature works by Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Debussy with award-winning musicians to accompany the dancers. Well known bravura works, gentle classics and newly choreographed elements define the evening and the technical skills of the young dancers.

Saturday 29th July Ahead of the big race on Sunday, get into the cycling spirit in Kingston town centre with a host of cycle-themed activities and family entertainment.

Sunday 30th July The world’s greatest festival of cycling returns to Kingston on Sunday 30th July and we’ve got a jam-packed day of fun for all the family. With the race passing through the town centre twice, as well as a host of events and activities lined up for the day, Kingston is the best place to enjoy RideLondon and cheer on the riders. Kingston’s variety of shops, restaurants, bars, cafes and bustling Ancient Market Place will have you spending the remainder of the day in town soaking up the event’s atmosphere.

• Pull up a deckchair, grab a drink and watch all the action on the big screen in Ancient Market Place

Cyclists in the Prudential RideLondonSurrey 100, 46 and Classic events will pass through Kingston and over Kingston Bridge on the outbound route and back through the town via the Ancient Market Place, on the return journey. The timings below give an approximate time as to when the riders will be cycling through the town.

• Be wowed by the BMX Stunt Show featuring some of the best BMX riders in the UK in Ancient Market Place • Try out the Rollapaluza static race bike and challenge your friends and family to see who posts the highest score • Hop onto a pedal power smoothie bike and blend your own free smoothie to quench your thirst in Eden Walk

With the exception of Cattle Market, all car parks in Kingston town centre will be open as usual although access routes may change due to road closures.

From the north Head to John Lewis, Bentalls and the Seven Kings car parks which will be accessible from the north via Sury Basin.

From the south and east Car parks south of Eden Street will be accessible from the south. The Bittoms car park is accessible by The Bittoms. Brook Street, Ashdown Road and Fairfield NCP are accessible via Wheatfield Way.
