This is where all the coolest kids hang out and learn about our amazing planet This activity workbook has been made specially for you by Rhino Conservation Botswana – but you can call us ‘RCB’. All our friends do. So write your name on it – quick!

We’re passionate about this beautiful place where we all live and we want you to love it too.

Together, we’re going to find out more about Botswana’s amazing wild places and all of its brilliant wildlife, especially the rhinos. These magnificent animals are really close to our hearts, as we’ve helped to return them to the Okavango Delta after years of extinction here.

You’re going to have a great time at EE Club. This activity workbook is packed with cool stuff to discover, great games to play and fun crafts to make. Just don’t forget that it’s important to show respect to our teachers and our class mates, so that everyone can enjoy themselves.

WHY IS THE AFRICA SAVANNAH SO SPECIAL? The African savannah is a vast landscape that’s home to an amazing array of plants and animals, from the tiny termite to the mighty elephant. Here, everything depends on everything else. Let’s learn more about this fascinating and complex ecosystem

THE SAVANNAH

Each species in the African savannah occupies a

different niche in the ecosystem and plays a vital role in maintaining its delicate balance. Insects pollinate,

herbivores shape the landscape and predators remove weak animals. It’s a complex web of interactions.

The savannah changes with the seasons. With the heat of summer come the rains. Overnight, the savannah bursts into life. Flowers bloom, grasses seed, and bushes and

trees turn green and lush. Animals feed on the abundance of new growth, each in their own unique way.

As bees gather nectar, they transfer pollen from plant to plant. Thanks to these pollinators, the savannah’s botanical kingdom is fertilised. Herbivores keep the grass short so flowers can bloom, digging warthogs

break up hard earth so seeds can take root, and elephants push over trees so saplings have a chance to grow.

Wherever you have herbivores, you have predators.

Their role is to regulate numbers of prey animals and

remove the weak. Thinning out large herds of animals opens up space and resources for smaller herbivores.

Death is an inevitable part of the cycle, yet energy is not

lost. Scavengers help to break up carcasses and release vital nutrients back into the ecosystem. Centipedes, worms and bacteria thrive on these rich deposits.

Termites are a major decomposer of the savannah. As they consume dead plant matter, they return nutrients

to the soil. These nutrients are now ready to re-enter the cycle. They are drawn up through the roots of plants and make shoots sprout, flowers bud and trees grow taller and stronger. The cycle of life continues.

are made up of many interacting food chains, called food webs. Carnivores

herbivores (impalas, zebras, warthogs)

that consume producers (trees, shrubs,

grass). Scavengers (hyenas, vultures) and decomposers (bacteria, fungi, termites) break down organic matter and make it available to producers, completing the food web.

AFRICAN SAVANNAH FOOD CHAIN GAMES Now you know how a food web works, let’s see you and the rest of your club put it into practice with these fun challenges

PREDATORS & HERBIVORES

Imagine you’re a young zebra wandering through the bush.

Remember who eats who? The herbivores you meet are friendly, but the carnivores are dangerous.

The aim of this game is to reach the finish first. It’s best played with two to four people, but you can play alone by timing how fast you can finish. Throw the dice and move the number of spaces shown.

If you land on a herbivore you’re safe and they will help you climb to higher number. But if you land on a carnivore, you have to move back three squares. Good luck!

WEB OF LIFE CONNECTIONS

This game reminds us of how all the organisms in an ecosystem depend on each other to survive.

As you play, you’ll come up with the connections between different species and their environment.

Don’t be afraid to guess: there are many correct answers! All the players in the game can help to identify the relationships.

1 Your teacher will write the names of lots of producers, consumers and decomposers found on the African savannah on index cards.

2 Sit in a circle. Each player takes a card from a pile in the middle and holds it up so that everyone can see the name of the organism on the card.

3 The person with the tree card starts off the game by tossing the ball of twine to someone else in the circle.

4 The person who catches the ball tries to explain how the organism on their card interacts with the tree. Other players can help out.

5 Next, the person who caught the ball holds onto the string and tosses the ball to a third person. The third person explains how the organism on their card interacts with the second person’s organism. If the player gets stuck, other players can help out.

6 The game continues until everyone has had a turn at catching the twine. The twine is now complex and tangled – everyone in the group is connected to everyone else.

7 Choose one of the organisms in the game. Can anyone predict what would happen if it was removed from the web? Which other organisms would be affected? What would happen if you cut the twine with scissors? What effect would this have on the ecosystem?

WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?

The tangled ball of twine has formed a web, just like the complex web of life in an ecosystem. The web shows how closely organisms in an ecosystem interact with one another. Anything that happens to part of the web has an effect on the whole system.

EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Life on Africa’s savannah is more than a collection of individuals. All lives are intricately interwoven, so the removal of even one seemingly insignificant species can cascade throughout the ecosystem. It’s our responsibility to safeguard the diversity of the savannah, and recognise the importance of each and every species.

If we can do this, then one of the world’s last pristine ecosystems will have a bright future.

START STRONG

Good writers hook their readers from the start so that they keep reading their story. When you write the introduction to your essay, try one of these strategies to capture your readers’ attention: n A fun fact about your animal n A description of its habitat n A hard-hitting fact about how endangered your animal is n Why you like the animal If you’ve ever seen your animal in real life, you could describe how seeing it made you feel.

WHAT IS A RH Colossal relatives of the rhino roamed the planet 50 million years ago, but the ones roaming the Okavango Delta are just as impressive (if a little less hairy!) Let’s find out what makes them so special

HUMP

EARS HORNS

Black and white rhino have two horns. Made from keratin – the same as human fingernails – they grow 4cm–6cm each year.

The rhino has sharp hearing, thanks to rotating cup-shaped ears that funnel sounds into the ear drum. The ears stand up when it’s curious or alert, and flatten when it’s angry.

HEAD

The black rhino tends to hold its head higher than the white rhino, which holds its head close to the ground to graze grass. The black rhino has a shorter skull and a more sharply defined forehead than the white rhino.

MOUTH

Black rhinos have a pointed, prehensile upper lips to pluck leaves from trees, while white rhinos have flat upper lips for grazing grass.

EYES

NOSE

Rhinos have an excellent sense of smell.

Each nostril contains millions of sensory cells, which pick up even the slightest odour.

OVER TO YOU!

Their relatively small eyes are positioned on either side of their head. Rhinos have poor binocular vision and struggle to see anything standing still at a distance.

Sometimes baby rhinos are orphaned when poachers kill their mums. These babies need special help from humans to stay alive. What would you call an orphan rhino?

The hump on the back of the rhino’s neck helps to support its heavy head, and grows as the animal ages. Black rhinos have a less prominent hump.

OXPECKER

Oxpeckers are known in Swahili as askari wa kifaru or ‘the rhino’s guard’. They keep the rhino tick-free and raise the alarm if danger is near.

HOW A RHINO GROWS

A rhino calf stays with its mother for two to four years. During this time, it learns how to survive from her. You can tell how old a rhino calf is by comparing its size to that of its mother. Here’s our handy guide.

0-3 MONTHS

At up to three months old, a rhino calf’s shoulder is level with its mother’s tummy.

TAIL

SIZE

An upturned tail can mean a rhino is alarmed or curious and a curled tail, like a pig, shows it is anxious.

The black rhino is smaller than the white rhino, which is the biggest rhino in the world.

SKIN

Despite their names, both white and black rhinos are greyish-brown, with thick skin. They roll in mud to protect themselves from sunburn and insect bites.

FEET

Rhino’s feet are adapted for running. Each foot has a cushioned pad and three rigid hoofed toes. Turn to p31 to see their footprints, and learn how their tracks help our Rhino Rangers follow them.

ABOUT 1-2 YEARS

At one- to two-years old, a calf’s shoulder is about the same height as its mum’s tail.

It’s still dependent on her for everything.

ABOUT 2-4 YEARS

By about three years old, the calf is pretty big and almost independent. But when seen side-by-side with its mum, you can tell the youngster has a bit of growing to do.

RHINO CHALLENGES Now it’s time for you to create your own rhinos! Just follow these simple steps and make these two great crafts You’ll need:

1 Using your pencil, draw an oval body.

Don’t forget to use a light touch in case you go wrong!

2 Draw a large triangular head, cutting off the point by the mouth

5 Finally, draw on two long, pointy ears

Drawing a rhino is so easy. Just practice these simple shapes and in no time at all, you’ll have drawn your very rhino.

Don’t forget to colour it in!

MAKE A FOOTPRINT RHINO

This activity is lots of fun and a little bit messy, so you might d want to do it outdoors. You nee to be a bit careful to get the best effect

You’ll need:

White card or thick paper

Child-safe water-based paint

Paint tray

Black pen

Scissors

Glue

1 Put the paint tray on the ground and pour in a centimetre of paint 2 Stand next to it and put the white paper within reach of your feet 3 Slowly and carefully press one foot lightly into the paint in the tray 4 Now lift it out and give it a light shake to remove any drips 5 Twist around and very gently press your painted foot onto the paper 6 Carefully lift it off, without scuffing, and wait for the paint to dry 7 Now, with the black pen draw four legs, a tail, two ears and two horns 8 Don’t forget to give your rhino a happy face. Brilliant!

RHINO CHALLENGES WHAT IS A CLOUD?

A cloud is a large collection of very tiny droplets of water or ice crystals. The droplets are so small and light that they can float in the air.

HOW ARE CLOUDS FORMED?

All air contains water, but near the ground it’s usually in the form of an invisible gas called water vapour.

When warm air rises, it expands and cools. Cool air can’t hold as much water vapour as warm air, so some of the vapour condenses onto tiny particles of dust that are floating in the air and forms a tiny droplet around each one. When billions of these droplets come together they become a visible cloud.

What’s in the sky? When you’re outside, don’t forget to look up. Our rhino rangers are always aware of what the sk y is telling them, as the weather affects how animals behave

WHAT KIND OF CLOUDS CAN YOU SPOT TODAY?

Different kinds of clouds have different names.

Here are the four most common:

STRATUS (STRA-tus)

These clouds are flat and often cover the whole sky. They look like a solid grey sheet that blocks out the sky and often form ahead of storms with continuous rain.

CIRRUS (SYR-US)

These clouds are thin and wispy and float high in the sky.

They are composed of ice and mean that the weather may be changing soon. By watching the movement of cirrus clouds you can tell from which direction weather is approaching.

NIMBUS (NIM-BUS)

These are very tall, black storm clouds. They bring thunderstorms, wind, rain and sometimes hail.

CUMULOUS (KYOOM-YUH-LUS)

These clouds are small, rounded puffs that appear in long rows.

They are constantly moving.

If they are white, they predict good weather. If they turn grey, then rain may be coming.

Make your rhino’s body and legs Roll four 10mm balls for its legs and roll an oval about 40x20mm for its body

Shape your rhino’s legs Roll the four balls into cylinders about 10mm high and place them in a square so they will fit under your rhino’s body

Place your rhino’s body on his legs Gently press your rhino’s body down evenly on all four legs. Press your thumb in where his head will go to make a small dent

Make your rhino’s head Roll a teardrop shape about 25mm long and give it a blunt nose. Rhino’s head does seem quite large for his body

Place your rhino’s head on his body Gently press your rhino’s head down on to his body. It should sit quite low on his ‘shoulders’

Make your rhino’s ears and horns Roll two 3mm balls. Now flatten them and pinch them up to make two ears. For your rhino’s horns, roll a 7mm and a 5mm cone

Finish your rhino Stick the ears and horns in place and use a pencil poke two holes for eyes and draw him a mouth.

Roll a small cone for a tail.

And you are done. It looks amazing!

RHINOS ARE SPEED MACHINES!

RHINO RANGERS

They can run up to 30–40 miles per hour.

The fastest human can run 15 miles per hour, so if you’re ever charged by a rhino, find a tree to climb – don’t try to outrun it!

STUDY RHINO ACTIVITY

KNOW THE AREA

Every day, the rhino rangers find the rhinos to see how they’re doing, what they’re eating and whether they’re socialising with other rhinos or on their own. They record this information on a special data sheet.

They also make sure they’re eating well and look fat and happy.

RCB’s rhino rangers go out on patrol every day, so they know the Okavango Delta incredibly well. They have a map of their area in their heads with every island, tree and river marked on it. They know where the rhinos like to hang out, and where the best grass can be found.

BE OUR EYES IN THE SKIES

RECOGNISE THE RHINOS

Every few days, the rhino rangers jump into a light aircraft and fly low and slow over the bush looking for the rhinos. They have to make sure the rhinos haven’t wandered off and check that there haven’t been any fights between rhino bulls, as these can cause injuries or even death.

A ranger knows all the rhinos in their area as individuals. They can recognise them from their ear notches – special marks on their ears – and know their histories and personalities. Over time, they come to understand each one’s movements and preferences.

STUDY SPECIES INTERACTIONS

TRACK THE RHINOS Rhino rangers are highly trained and able to find the rhinos through skilful tracking and bush craft. That doesn’t mean the rhinos make their job easy – they can move long distances and are surprisingly hard to find despite their large size.

The rhino rangers also study the relationships between rhinos and other herbivores, such as zebras, and predators, such as lions and hyenas. It’s important to understand how the presence of predators affects the rhinos, as sometimes they might hunt small calves.

READ RHINO TRACKS Once you know what you’re looking for, rhino footprints are easy to spot.

Rhinos have three toes – a large middle toe at the front with two smaller toes on the sides.

This makes their footprints – or ‘spoor’ – easy to tell from elephants and hippos, which both have four toes.

The white rhino’s footprints are larger than those of the black rhino. The footprints of both species of rhino are crisscrossed with a unique pattern of ‘cracks’.

These make it possible for skilled trackers to recognise individual animals from their spoor.

FOLLOW RHINO TRAILS

Our rhino rangers are skilled in reading the bush. To their trained eyes, a rhino’s tracks can reveal how large it was, how fast it was moving and how recently it passed by.

They always keep one eye on the weather, because this helps them to read any footprints they find. A brisk wind smooths the crisp edges of a fresh track and recent downpours leave raindrops in the sand inside the footprint. This reveals how fresh it is.

Rhino rangers keep an eye out for oxpeckers as these birds love to hang out on large herbivores, like giraffes and rhinos.

Even insects can help you to age a rhino footprint. But first you need to know which species are active at night and during the day, and what signs they leave.

RHINO RANGERS

UNDERSTAND RHINO POO Being short-sighted, rhinos rely heavily on their sense of smell. They communicate with other rhinos by spraying poo and wee around!

Each rhino’s smell is unique. A big pile of rhino dung – known as a ‘midden’ – holds lots of information for other rhinos. Whenever a rhino passes this shared toilet, it leaves a smelly message to say “I was here”. The rhinos’ sensitive noses can tell if the other rhinos who used the midden are young or old, male or female.

Black and white rhino dung is easy to tell apart. Black rhino dung is compact, woody and fibrous in appearance. It contains neatly snipped twigs. White rhino dung contains finely shaved grass.

HOW DID BOTSWANA’S RHINOS GET HERE?

The Okavango Delta is the perfect place for wild rhinos. Sadly, poachers killed all the rhinos living here a long time ago, so the Botswana government and organisations like RCB have made a huge effort to return them to the wild. Let’s see how this works...

RCB works with the Botswana government and our partners to translocate rhinos from places in South Africa and Zimbabwe where they are being killed for their horns and bring them to the safety of Botswana. This process takes a lot of effort and careful planning.

The return of wild rhinos is great for Botswana and a source of great national pride for our country. They attract lots of tourists and this creates jobs and income.

Translocation is when a wild animal is moved from one place to another, usually to somewhere where it will be safer, happier and healthier.

1 ASSESS VEGETATION Before any rhino translocation can take place, RCB makes sure that the Okavango Delta will be able to keep the rhinos happy and healthy. We ensure that the habitat has enough food and water to support all the rhinos living here, even when it’s really hot and dry.

Moving a rhino from another country to Botswana is a huge task. Lots of letters have to be written and permits obtained.

We also put together a big team of people – including a veterinarian, a game capture team, a helicopter pilot and armed security men. Everyone has a role to play in bringing the rhinos back to Botswana safely. It’s hard work so everyone has to have a sense of humour.

Fallen leaves, sticks, stones, cones or seedpods 1 To make your nature mandala, collect a variety of fallen leaves, sticks, stones, seedpods or cones. Another form of appreciation is to show respect toward someone or something that you value. In relationships, this translates as care, concern, fair treatment and courtesy.

Care is an important aspect of appreciation. You take care of things. You respect your belongings and the property of others. BOTSWANA’S AMAZING NATURE We’re lucky to live in Botswana. Our incredible country has some of the world’s best wildlife and wild places. But how much do you know about them? Let’s find out

10 FACTS ABOUT BOTSWANA’S WILDEST PLACES 1 Botswana is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations.

2 Nearly 40% of the land is national parks and wildlife reserve, providing large areas for animals to roam.

3 The Kalahari desert covers nearly the whole of Botswana. It is known as a semi-desert as it receives more rain than a true desert.

4 The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is in the Kalahari desert. It’s the second-largest game reserve in the world, encompassing 52,800km2.

5 The Okavango Delta is one of the seven natural wonders of Africa and the jewel of the Kalahari.

It’s the largest inland delta in the world covering 15,000km2.

6 The Okavango is special because it’s an inland delta – a wetland in the middle of a desert. None of the water in the Okavango ever reaches the sea. Instead, when it reaches the delta, it simply spreads out to create a magnificent swamp. Only around 2% of the water makes in into Lake Ngami, all the rest simply evaporates or is soaked up by plants.

7 In 2014, the Okavango Delta became the 1,000th UNESCO World Heritage site.

8 In the heart of the Okavango Delta lies Moremi Game Reserve, one of the best game-viewing areas in Africa.

9 Botswana is home to the world’s highest concentration of African elephants. Most of them live in Chobe National Park.

10 The Makgadigadi Pans are among the largest salt pans in the world, stretching over an area of 12,000km2. The climate here is harsh and hot and with little rain.

When it rains, the pan changes into a blue lake, attracting many animals including flamingos.

SEVEN INCREDIBLE ANIMAL FACTS

Botswana’s national bird is the kori bustard. It’s famous for being the heaviest bird in the world that can fly.

The heaviest on record weighed 22kg.

DID YOU KNOW?

Botswana is known for its amazing birdlife. 593 species have been recorded here. Most of them are waterbirds that live in the Okavango Delta.

Botswana’s national animal is the plains zebra. Each animal’s stripes are as unique as fingerprints – no two are exactly alike.

Botswana hosts Africa’s longest land mammal migration. Zebras migrating to and from the Chobe River to Nxai Pan National Park cover 300 miles.

147 species of mammals have been recorded in Botswana

The African elephant can live up to 80 years. Like us, they feel emotions, take care of their families and grieve for their dead, gently touching their bones.
