A Note from the Festival Director

Friday 6th December

We are delighted to welcome you all here this weekend for the Inaugural Richard Harris International Film Festival. This new Irish film festival celebrates work from the Irish Diaspora. We strongly believe that the Irish film-making Diaspora should be encouraged to showcase their work here in Ireland in this the year of ‘the Gathering’. However ‘the Gathering’ doesn’t have to end this year and we believe this festival will be part of the festival calendar for many years to come. Plans are already well in place to make next year’s festival bigger and even better as Limerick celebrates its designation as City of Culture 2014. The idea for this festival emerged during a meeting about ‘the gathering’ in Limerick city last October. The festival was inaugurated to ensure Richard Harris’s enduring legacy was honoured in his native city. The committee felt that an annual film festival that promoted Irish film makers living abroad was the most apposite way to honour Richard. Ireland punches above its weight in terms of acting and film-making talent, Michael Fassbender, Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson and Saoirse Ronan continue to fly the flag for the Irish film industry but it was Richard Harris that paved the way for these stars in Hollywood. Richard Harris was an actor, singer, theatrical producer, writer, poet & film director of immense ability and charisma. His versatility was evident in his varied film roles whether he was playing a Roman Emperor, a wizard, a tenant-farmer or a mutineer. Harris’s career and personality necessitated a peripatetic life but Limerick and the Shannon region remained close to his heart – therefore we are delighted to bring Richard home this December.

Limerick’s most famous and favourite actor Richard Harris was born Richard St John Harris on the 1st of October, 1930. He was the fifth out of nine children born to Ivan John Harris and Mildred Josephine (Harty) Harris. Dickie, as he is affectionately known in Limerick attended the Jesuit-run Crescent College on O’Connell Street in the heart of Limerick City. He was a talented rugby player and was on several Munster Junior and Senior Cup teams for Crescent. He also played for Crescent junior team and played for Garryowen at senior level. His athletic career was cut short however when he caught tuberculosis as a teenager. He did however remain an ardent fan of the Munster Rugby and Young Munster teams then until his death on the 25th of October, 2002. While ill with TB he read veraciously while recuperating and found that he his interests shifted towards a new interest in the arts. He read Joyce, Beckett, D H Lawrence, Dylan Thomas and Yeats. He went on to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) before making his stage debut in 1956 made in The Quare Fellow. Dickie made his mark and soon became one of a new generation of young British actors in the London theatre scene that included actors such as Albert Finney among others. He began his film career playing a character without a name in the Alive and Kicking (1958), but he is probably best known for his role as King Arthur in the Broadway hit Camelot and Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films. His most impressive performance however came when playing a character called Frank Machin in This Sporting Life (1963). Dickie netted an Academy Award nomination and won Best Actor in 1963 at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of a short tempered coal-miner turned rugby star. Over the course of his career he has starred along some of the biggest names in American and British film; Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Marlon Brando, Vanessa Redgrave, George C. Scott, Ava Gardner, Peter O’Toole, John Huston, Trevor Howard, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery, Brenda Fricker, Tom Berenger, John Hurt, Harrison Ford, Patrick Bergin, James Earls Jones, Sophia Loren, Gary Cooper, Charlton Heston, Michael Redgrave, Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, to name but a few. In more recent years he starred alongside some of the more contemporary talents such as Anne Archer, Russell Crowe, Morgan Freeman, Joaquin Pheonix, Oliver Reed, Sean Bean, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, John Cleese, Warwick Davis, Dame Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Julie Walters, Fiona Shaw and Robbie Coltrane. There are just too many to mention them all. He also worked with some wonderful directors, Chris Columbus, Ridley Scott, Clint Eastwood, Jim Sheridan, Ken Hughes, Martin Ritt, John Huston and Lindsey Anderson.

“Life’s a Breeze”

“This Sporting Life”

Synopsis

Synopsis

LIFE’S A BREEZE is a feel-good comedy which follows a family struggling to stay afloat and stay together through hard times in Ireland. Unemployed slacker Colm (Pat Shortt), his aging mother Nan (Fionnula Flanagan) and his niece Emma (Kelly Thornton) must overcome their many differences to lead their family in a race against time to find a lost fortune.

One of the finest British films ever made, this benchmark of “kitchen-sink realism” follows the self-defeating professional and romantic pursuits of a miner turned rugby player eking out an existence in drab Yorkshire. With an astonishing, raging performance by a young Richard Harris, an equally blistering turn by fellow Oscar nominee Rachel Roberts as the widow with whom he lodges, and electrifying direction by Lindsay Anderson, in his feature-film debut following years of documentary work, This Sporting Life remains a dramatic powerhouse.

The film had its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh where Kelly Thornton picked up the Bingham Ray New Talent Award for her role in the film. The film went on to screen at numerous film festivals including two of the most prominent festivals in the world, the Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan Film Festival. LINDSAY ANDERSON— Director LANCE DALY - Director Lance Daly has made five feature films - Last Days in Dublin (2001), The Halo Effect (2004), Kisses (2008), The Good Doctor (2011) and Life’s a Breeze (2013). FIONNULA FLANAGAN Educated in Switzerland and England, Irish actress Fionnula Flanagan studied for her trade at Dublin's Abbey Theatre. With her portrayal of Gerty McDowell in the 1967 film version of Ulysses, Flanagan established herself as one of the foremost interpreters of James Joyce. She made her 1968 Broadway bow in Brian Friel's Lovers then appeared in such Joycean theatrical projects as Ulysses in Nighttown and James Joyce's Women (1977). The lastnamed project earned her "Critic's Circle" awards in Los Angeles and San Francisco; it was subsequently committed to film in 1988, with Flanagan repeating her portrayal of Harriet Shaw Weaver. Other notable film credits include The Others, Tears of the Sun, Four Brothers and Yes Man. PAT SHORTT An actor of note, Pat has appeared with Druid Theatre Company in their production of Martin McDonagh's The Lonesome West. Pat played the lead role in Lenny Abrahamson’s award-winning film Garage and also starred in box office hit The Guard with Brendan Gleeson. Other film titles include Angela Mooney Dies Again (with Mia Farrow), This Is My Father (with Brendan Gleeson, Aidan Quinn, Stephen Rae and James Caan), The Closer It Gets (with Ian Harte, Niamh Cusack and Sean McGinley) and Man About Dog written by Belfast-born Pearse Eliot. Pat can be seen in Moone Boy, the hit comedy series with Chris O'Dowd for Sky 1 HD and has also completed filming on Calvary, the new film directed by John Martin McDonagh which should be in Irish cinemas next year.

Directed 3 actors to Oscar nominations: Richard Harris (Best Actor), This Sporting Life (1963)), Rachel Roberts (Best Actress, This Sporting Life (1963)), and Ann Sothern (Best Supporting Actress, The Whales of August (1987). He was a close friend of the actresses Rachel Roberts and Jill Bennett, both of whom committed suicide. He paid tribute to both in his documentary film, "Is That All There Is?". He was, for a few weeks in late 1957, the film critic of the "New Statesman" magazine. During this time, he caused considerable controversy when he dismissed the year's biggest film, "The Bridge On The River Kwai", in just three sentences, devoting about 90% of his column to a laudatory review of a Polish film, "A Generation", which had not yet opened in London. David Lean, some twenty-five years later, refused to be introduced to Anderson because of this perceived slight. Founded the British film magazine 'Sequence' in 1947 and served as its co-editor. The magazine espoused the virtues of American avant-garde cinema and was strongly concerned with social issues in film. Artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre, 1969-1975. Also founding member of the English Stage Company at the Royal Court. Classical scholar, educated at Oxford. His theatrical career was strongly intertwined with that of his close friend, the playwright David Storey.

G.B.F. tells the story of two best friends, Tanner (Michael J. Willett, United States of Tara) and Brent (Paul Iacono, The Hard Times of R.J. Berger) —both are gay but in the closet. Brent longs for the spotlight and believes that coming out will make him instantly popular, as the newest must-have teen girl “accessory”: The G.B.F., while Tanner would rather fly under the radar and graduate from high school without ever being noticed. When things don't go according to plan and Tanner is outed instead of Brent, the two boys go from B.F.F.s to instant frenemies and the three most popular girls in school—queen of mean bombshell Fawcett, (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars) drama club diva Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, Precious) and sweet, Mormon goodgirl ‘Shley (Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) launch an all out social war to win Tanner’s status-enhancing friendship. Meanwhile, Tanner must choose between skyrocketing popularity and the friends he is leaving behind. The film also stars Awkward’s Molly Tarlov and the boys’ sardonic best friend Sophie; Harry Potter’s Evanna Lynch as a judgemental Christian co-ed; recording artist Joanna “JoJo” Levesquea as the desperate president of her school’s Gay Straight Alliance (that lacks any actual gay members); Natasha Lyonne as the G.S.A.’s unhinged faculty advisor; and Megan Mullally as Brent’s overly accepting mom. Rebeca Gayheart, Jonathan Silverman and Horatio Sanz also make hilarious appearances.
