I am currently a fifth year student at Drury University pursuing my Master’s degree in Architecture, with an expected gradua tion date of May 2023. My interests include residential and landscape architecture, environmental sustainability, watercol or painting, and ceramics. I was drawn to architecture as I have always been an avid sketcher and fascinated with the creative world. As I have completed four years in the program so far, I have come to find that what truly intrigues me is how architecture can be used to respond to social issues.

North and Cleveland Apartments
Our task was to develop an affordable housing complex for our client of choice in the Old-Town neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. After extensive research, we found a sig nificant statistical rise in the reported number of domestic violence cases amongst PIT surveyed homeless populations. With this came the decision to primarily focus on affordable housing tailored towards the needs of domestic violence victims. The goal for North and Cleveland Apartments is to create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming envi ronment for its residents by utilizing trauma-informed design principles and commu nity-oriented programs. These programs are each tailored towards helping victims of domestic violence find independence and self-empowerment, in hopes of ending the cyclic nature of returning to abusive situations due to the lack of necessary resources.

Mixed Use Affordable Housing
Our at-large site for this project was the entirety of Kansas Expressway in Springfield, Missouri. This large roadway acts as a division between the East and West sides of Kansas Expressway. My group saw this as the cause for the lack of social interaction, economic stability, and poor access to necessary assets in the area. We proposed a master plan with the main goal of “replacing the missing puzzle piece” to the greater Springfield area. The overall idea would provide affordable housing options, accessible grocery outlets in a food deserted area, and social activities.

Conceptually, this project aims to be inclusive, not only on social terms, but architecturally as well. In a divided community, being mindful of differing backgrounds and day to day routines is extreme ly important when designing. The project was approached first by envisioning a form that speaks of inclusivity. This brought to mind the simple image of a circle, or an infinity symbol. Making this de velopment somewhat enclosed was important to provide a sense of community.
The Mixed Use Development provides commercial market space on the ground floor, and residential space, available to rent or own, on the second floor. Extended market spaces seen on the context map above are meant to act as “arms” reaching out into the community, encouraging a warm welcome to existing residents of the area.

SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN
The idea of “hygge” is meant to promote comfortability and coziness, which is something this area needs. Scandinavian design can be seen as a modernization of this area in Springfield. Proposed materials for this development include wood, concrete, steel, and glass. Light and dark woods would be used for contrast, and large sections of glass to take advantage of natural lighting; an important part of Scandinavian design, and living situations in general. The purpose of the wooden facade is to merge with the surrounding environment, making it a seamless addition to the area, rather than an intrusion of a developed neighborhood.
The benefits of Scandinavian design include, uncluttered space promoting relaxtion, practical and simple de sign, environmentally-friendly materials, energy efficient design, non-invasive design to surroundings, large amounts of natural daylighting, and promotion of comfortability and coziness.

Home - a Sanctuary
This house was designed for professor, artist, and author, Jo Van Arkel. Jo values minimalism, natural daylighting, and privacy. The flow and layout of the plan mimics her thought process and personality, as she likes to entertain at times, but mostly remains a reserved individual. The home is tailored to her lifestyle, including a writing studio on the second floor, and an art gallery attached to the ga rage to provide a separate experience.

Process of central space

04 Pavilion

The goal for this project was to create a space with intention to bring people together during the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
With inspiration from the historic moongate in traditional Suzhou gardens, the platforms get their form. To further promote a serendipitous experi ence, some of the platforms look down to the water, and screens at differing heights allow privacy and passive ventilation. These spaces can be used for reflection, gathering, and exploring.
Located in Suzhou, China, the Bridge Pavilion seeks to provide public gathering space to the city’s in habitants. With a site so narrow, the most beneficial option was to expand over the water.

The chosen site for the Courtyard Boutique Hotel was Suzhou, China, a major city northwest of Shanghai. This city is known for its wide spread canal systems, and preservation of traditional Chinese Archi tecture. As Suzhou is a popular tourist destination, the need for a boutique hotel is only fitting.
Conceptually, this project aims to reflect the city’s complex layout and form. By keeping the footprints of existing buildings on the site, I was able to create something new without forgetting what once was there. Within the hotel, one can experience public courtyards and gardens, while also having access to private courtyards as well.
05 Boutique Hotel
A boutique hotel aims to capture elements unique to the area in which you are staying, to enhance user experience.
A multipurpose space located at the front of the site is used to house local exhibitions of literature, art, music, and markets, all things cul turally expressive of the area.

Independent Study

Over winter break, myself and a few collegues worked togeth er on an exploratory project using Rhinoceros 3D. Using an addin called “Panelling Tools”, we created abstract surfaces and stretched various objects between them.
This exploratory study produced hundreds of inspiring prototypes that help us, as architecture students, to remain in the creative and curious headspace. What we came up with was fascinating as we were able to create physical space between the surfaces used.
