RHENDA CHONG. PORTFOLIO 2010-2012

ll PREFACE

T

his portfolio is a compilation of my architectural work in the University of Melbourne from the year 2010 to 2012. They represent my learning process and current understanding of architecture.

T

hrough these experimentations, I have come to realise that architecture is a critical manipulation of space and forms, it evokes feelings and experiences from our values. Thus, architecture should be not one, but multi-faceted. It should encompass both abstract forms and experiential sequences. Architecture is limitless, and our potential to create and imagine powers our desire to design.

T

hank you tutors, lecturers and my fellow classmates who taught and guided my fruitful learning experience throughout my undergraduate degree, I look forward to learn and grow with real experience for the many years to come.

FIELD OF REALISATION _

T

his project seeks an innovative and sustainable response for the design of a ‘Gateway’ for the City of Wyndham. The aim of the project is to utilize modern digital architecture methods fusing it with sustainable concepts and historical ideology of Wydham to provide a solution that is true to Wydham and the City of Melbourne. Derived fromt the concept of biomimicry, Field of Realisation is a 22m structure that encompasses the use of voronois to highlight the dynamic capacity and movement of the population. It serves to provide commuters with a holistic experiential realm that would invigorate their senses and finally, drawing their attention to Wyndham.

B

elow are pictures of the model at 1:1000 , made using 3D laser cutting to achieve clean and sleek lines, form is achieved through a mix use of Rhino and Grasshopper then finally editied through Adobe Illustrator.

T

his project engages with Barlow Motors to produce a Multi-storeyed Carshowroom equipped with a private residence. The aim behind the design is to encompass the noble fighting spirit of Barlow merging it with Barlow’s hardships, extending and reviving his legacy for the future.

T

he representation of his past and future is represented through the use of zoning within the narrow site. Materially, a contrast between the a dark concrete and a curtain wall structure is to carry on the said representation. The staggered roof of the building enables a sense of continuation upwards drawing attention to the main facade facing North. This allows the use of passive design. A high atrium is added so that maximum light can penetrate into the building. Furthermore, it enables a more open circulation to allow more interaction between Barlow, the staff and the visitor and clients which is most important in preserving and extending his business.

T

his project was a year 2 design studio focusing on analysing the approaches and design concepts of an assigned ‘Master’. My work focuses on the reinterpretation of my understanding of Mario Botta’s Architetto. I was throughly inspired by his clever use of contrasting geometry, balanced symmetry, light & space manipulation as well as heavy massing to produce architecture that is trully evocative.

I

nteriorly, to create a space that is true to Mario Botta, an open plan was utilized and this intent is enabled through a central circulation going through all four floors. Contextually, The building was chosen to be placed just on the edge of the river to allow more interaction of the stakeholders with the surroundings, creating a multi-functional recreational building.
