The image of a bird emerging from water inspired the form of the recycling and waste-to-energy center, reflecting nature’s efficiency and sustainability principles in its design.

THE WOOD DECK PATHWAYS FOLLOW THE CONTOURS OF THE BUILDING, BRINGING VISITORS UP TO THE TERRACES OF THE ARTISTS’ STUDIOS AND DOWN TO THE SHORE OF THE BASIN.

THE FORM OF THE BUILDING IS DERIVED FROM THE NATURE OF A BIRD’S WING FLAPPING IN MOTION. THE WINGS TOUCH THE WATER AS IF IT IS EMERGING FROM THE BASIN.

FLOOR PLATES VERSUS WINGS

THE CHALLENGES WE FACED PRIMARILY INVOLVED PROGRAMMING WITHIN THE CANTED WINGS, SO WE EXPLORED THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISITORS TO WALK BETWEEN THE BOX TRUSSES, MAKING LOOKOUT POINTS INTO THE RECYCLING CENTER, AND MAKING ADA COMPLIANT RAMP SYSTEMS.

WE EXPLORED ITERATIONS OF PATTERNS AND MATERIALS TO CLAD THE FACILITY SPACES DIFFRERNT TO THE SHARED PUBLIC SPACES. WHERE THE WALKWAYS OF THE SPINE MERGE INTO THE WTE FACILITY IS WHERE VISITORS CAN LOOK INTO SPACES AS WELL AS EXPERIENCE THE ALGAE FARM UNDERWATER.

EACH SEGMENTED WING IS HELD UP BY A BOX TRUSS SYSTEM WITHIN A FRAYING COLUMN GRID. THE LEFT WING HOUSES THE ARTIST RESIDENCE, GALLERY SPACE AND RECYCLING CENTER WHILE THE WING OF THE LEFT HOUSES THE WASTE TO ENERGY FACILITY. EACH FORM IS CLADDED DIFFERENTLY TO AN INDUSTRIAL STANDARD.

SIMILAR TO THE SHINY REFLECTIVE FEATHERS OFTEN FOUND ON THE UNDERSIDE OF A BIRDS WING, THE UNDERSIDE OF THE SEGMENTS ARE CLADDED IN A REFLECTIVE MIRROR-LIKE MATERIAL REFLECTING THE WATER ELEMENTS UNDERNEATH BACK ONTO THE VISITORS.

UNDERSIDE OF BIRD’S WING

THE SEGMENTS OF THE WING WERE INTENDED TO GIVE THE ILLUSION OF “HEAVINESS” HOVERING ABOVE THE VISITORS IN THE PARK. TO EXPRESS THIS, WE SOURCED BLUE-STONE, A NEW YORK LOCAL STONE, TO CLAD THE FACES OF THE WING.

THE MINI CITY

The Mini City in Sawtelle addresses LA’s housing crisis by offering a multi-generational communal compound, accommodating diverse family structures within a cohousing framework. Through strategic unit arrangements and shared courtyards, the design promotes independence and support, while re-contouring the lot integrates rainwater harvesting and enhances social connectivity.

ENTRANCES TO THE COMMUNAL COMPOUND

ONE OF THE TAKE AWAYS FROM OUR VISIT TO LOS ANGELES WAS HOW RESIDENTS TAKE PRIDE IN PERSONALIZING THEIR OUTDOOR SPACES AS MUCH AS THE INTERIOR OF THEIR HOMES. ONE OF THE WAY THEY DO THIS IS BY INCORPORATING VIBRANT COLOURS.

LIKE THE ARRANGEMENT OF A CITY, WE GROUNDED MOST OF THE SHARED SPACES LIKE THE LAUNDROMAT, COMMUNAL KITCHEN AND AUDITORIUM/MEETING AREA WHILE ELEVATING THE RESIDENTIAL SPACES AND TERRANCES ON THE UPPER LEVELS.

MAIN COURTYARD AND COMMUNAL

THE INTERIOR COURTYARD IS A SHARED SPACE FOR RESIDENTS TO INHABIT. IT IS CENTRAL TO THE LOT WHILE THEIR RESPECTIVE PRIVATE HOMES ARE SITUATED ALONG THE PERIMETER OF THE LOT.

Analysis of emergent sports like MMA informed the design of the stratas of the school, integrating principles of movement and functionality to optimize training spaces.

Attitudes cultivated from studying MMA were utilized to program interior spaces, fostering an environmentv conducive to discipline, collaboration, and physical development.

RE-CLAD STUDY

This project was aimed to establish the fundamentals of Grasshopper scripting and implement them in a new design proposal for an existing building in NYC.

My building was the Hilton UN Building, housing both office and hotel. My proposal was to make a breathable skin, a second layer to the building that acted as circulation, shading and planting devices.

THE NORTH FACE OF THE BUILDING EXPERIENCES THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SUN EXPOSURE, ALLOWING FOR THE ETFE PANELS TO BE EXCLUDED FROM THE AREAS OF THE FORM THAT ARE CARVED AND INSET.

A | SIZE VARIATIONS OF PANELS

BY OVERLAYING THE EXISTING SLANTED EDGES AND STRUCTURAL GRID ONTO THE NEW SKIN, THIS PARAMETRIC GUIDELINE DICTATED THE NUMBER OF COLUMNS AND CANTED MULLIONS OF THE PANELLING SYSTEM. THE EXISTING STUCTURE ALSO PROVIDED FOR AN EDGE CONDITION OF THE ETFE PANELS.

B | EXPANSION LEVELS OF ETFE

BY USING CLIMATE STUDIO AND LADYBUG PLUG-INS, THE LEVEL OF EXPANSION THE ETFE PANELS FOLLOW ARE GUIDED BY THE VARYING LEVELS OF SUN EXPOSURE ON THE FACES OF THE BUILDING. LESS EXPANSION RESPONDS TO HIGH SUN EXPOSURE, WHILE MORE EXPANSION ENCOURAGES SUN EXPOSURE INTO THE INTERIOR SPACES.

C | SECONDARY CIRCULATION

DEPENDING ON HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS AND ANNUAL WIND PATTERNS, A SECONDARY CORRIDOR (BLUE) IS PROPOSED BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW SKIN OF THE BUILDING.

D | VEGETATED AREAS

IN-PUTTING BOTH SUN EXPOSURE AND ANNUAL WIND EXPOSURE INTO THE PANELLING SYSTEM, IT DETERMINES WHICH PANELS WERE MORE SUITABLE TO HOST VERTICAL FARMING SYSTEMS. THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHERE THE SECONDARY CIRCULATION IS TRUE AND AN ETFE PANEL EXISTS.

THIS INVESTIGATION FOCUSES ON THE ASSEMBLY OF ALL STRUCTURAL AND STRUCTURAL AND SKIN COMPONENTS BASED ON CLIMATE STUDIO INPUTS TO REGULATE THE INTERIOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION.

CHURCH OF TRANSFIGURATION

TRANSFIGURATION is a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state. By extracting the geometries of the painting, we overlayed the linework as guides to programming the Church of Transfiguration.

This geometry also dictated the forms of the acoustic panels and wings of the sanctuary.
