TECHNICAL FOCUS Manufacturing research at the School of Engineering – Dr Nadimul Faisal School of Engineering at RGU is at the forefront in some of the key areas of manufacturing research, such as adhesively bonded joints, composite structures, CNC machining, nanocomposites, thermal spray coatings, and 3D printing, including application of range of simulation & modelling techniques, sensors integration and instrumentation to support materials manufacturing & their testing.

Scotland needs investment in advanced manufacturing. This section presents school’s manufacturing research domain and landscape, as there is renewed focus how the expertise and interest at the school will help build future directions in the area of advanced materials & manufacturing.

Adhesively bonded joints provide several benefits, such as more uniform stress distribution than conventional techniques such as fastening or riveting, high fatigue resistance and the possibility of joining different materials. Ongoing research has been related to manufacturing joints such as metal-to-metal, composite (carbon fibre)-to-metal, and composite (carbon fibre)-to-composite. The team (led by Dr Nadimul Faisal, Dr Ghazi Droubi, Dr Anil Prathuru, Prof Iain Steel, Dr Sha Jihan) has expertise in manufacturing test samples to assess the adhesive bond quality at the interface using acoustic emission sensors.

Over centuries, composites have revolutionised traditional design concepts and made possible a range of new materials for construction. Composites are multiphase materials consisting of two or more constituents. Fibrereinforced composites are increasingly being utilized within industries such as the aerospace and automotive industries where high performing lightweight materials are required. Resin infusion is a process commonly used within industry to produce composites as it has benefits over other manufacturing methods. On-going research has been related to manufacturing of composites using vacuum infusion and injection moulding. The team (led by Prof James Njuguna, Dr Ketan Pancholi) has expertise in manufacturing various samples for product development, including embedding sensors to monitor the manufacturing process. Some of the additional expertise (led by Dr Nadimul Faisal) include modelling and predicting the material properties of flexible risers or complex composite structures. Some recent work includes design, manufacturing and testing of auxetic composite cables & foams (negative Poisson’s ratio) for safety applications.

Nanocomposite manufacturing research includes both fundamental and applied research to manufacture innovative materials with unique structure properties and tailored functionality. This can typically include addressing morphology issues of polymer nanocomposites based on inorganic layer structures. Depending upon the degree of dispersion of nano-sized layer structure, polymer composites can be manufactured. Studies led by Dr Ketan Pancholi & Prof James Njuguna has been related to the synthetic and natural soft condensed material include understanding fundamental science to direct applications, manipulation of the interfacial short-range forces between nanoparticles, bubbles and droplets to create materials of desired mechanical, electrical, optical and other properties of interest.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is considered as one of the highest performing engineering thermoplastics, offering exceptional chemical resistance and excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures. Main applications of PEEK in additive manufacturing include metal-replacement, functional prototyping, and end-use parts for industries like aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, medical, dental and research. On-going research led by Prof James Njuguna (and other academics) has been related to manufacturing 3D printed products such as model of tool joints, auxetic foams, wind turbine blade, motor cars, etc. The team has expertise in design and manufacturing models for various research application.

Thermal spray is a generic term used for processes whereby a sprayed layer is built up by partially melting a powder in a high temperature zone (a flame or plasma) and propelling the resulting spray towards the substrate in the form of splats. Thermal spraying process are used to produce thick-film coatings to combat surface degradation of engineering components by wear, corrosion and fatigue crack initiation. On-going research has been related to manufacturing metamaterial coating for energy and electronic applications. In partnership with Monitor Coatings Ltd and the University of Nottingham, the team has expertise in design and manufacturing coating for various research application, such as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anode, biomaterials, ball valve, oil and gas corrosion resistance.

The team (led by Dr Nadimul Faisal, Dr Anil Prathuru, Prof Iain Steel) also has experience working on thermal spray coatings (i.e. computational modelling using ANSYS and LAMMPS molecular dynamics simulation; monitoring spray process using acoustic emission sensors; residual strain using neutron diffraction at STFC/Engin-X).

GRANTA EduPack includes models for predicting the properties of hybrid materials, enabling comparison with conventional materials, and for predicting part cost, supporting study of the economics of engineering. The software package can help set a material as a reference for guidance in charts, tables and when setting selection criteria (team led by Prof James Njuguna). It can help search for materials with similar property profile to the reference materials and can highlight significant difference. It can help specify engineering requirements when selecting materials and can-do calculations and audit.

To sum-up, the experience of research communities at the school suggests that there is significant potential to enhance university-based manufacturing research by engaging students, researchers (PhD students, postdoctoral research fellows, research engineers) and senior industryexperienced research leaders in the north-east region of Scotland.

Interview (Academic) - Dr Morgan Adams What is your background?

Born and raised in Aberdeen I was always very aware of the presence in the city of both Robert Gordon Institute of Technology (RGIT) and the University of Aberdeen. University of Aberdeen was my original choice for study, but with RGIT becoming RGU in 1992 I came on an open day to the School of Applied Sciences. That was one of the best decisions I made and changed the course of my destiny. The open day was full of practical demonstrations and people who resonated with me, even today, 28 years later, there are still people who I met that day working at RGU and I am proud to call them colleagues.

I have had many knock backs from failed proposals, rejected papers and colleague criticism, but that doesn’t stop me using the feedback to make the next proposal better and the next paper stronger. Believe in your ideas and push to make them a reality.”

My first degree was in Environmental Science and Technology (1998), followed by a Masters in Analytical Science (2002) and then my PhD, investigating the development of novel tracers for environmental applications (2009). So, I’ve always had a theme environment and the impact human activity has on it.

After my first degree I was fortunate enough to get a summer placement working with the Optoelectronics Research Centre who was led by the charismatic Prof Danny McStay, who really galvanized my love of applied research, and helped me blur the boundaries of disciplines. Thanks to him I found myself involved with projects ranging from developing heat resistant coatings on glass, to developing fluorosensors for biological colonisation of buildings to laser material processing and modification.

From there the research group evolved into CRE+E, with Prof Peter Robertson at the helm. Working with Peter allowed me to develop my research interests exploring applications of light active materials in the treatment of sealice on salmon and particularly both photocatalysis and engineering design of photoreactors. The latter allowed me the opportunity to develop several photoreactors which have been applied to various waste streams, vapour states and biological targets. As Peter moved to become Vice Principal for Commercialisation and Research, CRE+E was headed by Prof Pat Pollard.

During her time, I worked on a variety of commercial and research projects from security taggants, heavy metal sensors, optoelectronic sensors, biomedical taggants and photo conversion of gases.

During this time the laboratory evolved and moved 3 times to its current home in the Sir Ian Wood Building. I am grateful as not only has the last 22 years been a fantastic opportunity to work in a wide variety of areas, but it has also given me a huge group of fantastic colleagues. Now I find myself as a lecturer, mentor and the joy of working with students is second to none.

What sparked your initial interest in your subject area?

From a young age I was always outside in nature and I was very aware of the impact humans had on the environment I enjoyed. Whether it was leaks polluting the rivers I fished, or debris on the beaches I played on, the impact was unavoidable. This gave me a real sense of what I wanted to do with my life and really fueled my passion for problem solving, helping people and nurturing those to become better.

What are your interests?

My research interests, although firmly centered on environmental matters, are spread over a wide area. I am first and foremost interested in applied research in environmental themed projects, bioremediation, monitoring, pollution removal, water treatment (both potable and waste). From these my interests span into renewable energy with a combination of water treatment and wind, wave or solar power. As well as photo driven energy recovery from waste streams.

What are your plans for future development within your expertise?

My future plans are always to strive for the most interesting and challenging projects I can, developing my PhD student folio and utilizing 4th and 5th year mechanical engineering projects to develop the foundation levels and building this into something tangible and hopefully fundable. At present KTP provides an excellent opportunity, and I recommend to any colleague reading this to explore opportunities. KTP process is both rewarding in terms of industrial knowledge development and idea generation, as without ideas we don’t stimulate the conversations to move forward.

Any advice for today’s researchers?

Interview (Research student) - Maryam Heidarian What is your background?

My primary degree is a BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree from Azad University of South Tehran, Iran. My MSc degree is in Electrical Engineering (Control Systems) from National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan. I was fortunate, in my MSc degree, to secure the highest possible GPA (4.0 out of 4.0). I also undertook a one-year industrial internship with two electrical companies before my BEng graduation. Between my BEng and MSc studies I joined an electrical company in Pakistan to enhance my industrial knowledge. This experience later assisted me, during MSc research, to design a novel method to address an important issue in electrical control systems. The originality of the work was well received by NUST who supported me with travel funding to present a paper at an Automatic Control Council conference, Cardiff, UK. In recognition of my research activity I was awarded with the NUST President’s Gold Medal and became a recipient of the Wethington Graduate Fellowship, University of Oklahoma. After MSc graduation in 2013 I returned to my home country and worked as an electrical engineer until 2017. While working I maintained a research interest and applied to RGU for a PhD Studentship. In February 2017 I joined RGU at the School of Engineering to work with Dr Sam Burgess.

What sparked your initial interest in engineering?

One of the main factors motivating me to study electrical engineering was that my parents had engineering mindsets, although they did not have an academic engineering certificate from university.

They had a passion for problem solving, finding out how things worked and repairing items (you could call it DIY!). I was very curious and always interested in watching and assisting when possible. I even once, with help of my mother, made a very elementary cupboard door security alarm for fun. The circuit included a buzzer, a low voltage battery and a handmade capacitor. Later, when I joined high school, I developed a passion for electromagnetism and basic concepts of electrical engineering – I could see the link between electrical items I had helped repair (when younger) and the electrical theory I was studying. This interest was such that I opted to choose electrical engineering as my university major and now studying it at PhD level.

What are your interests?

My research interest is focused on efficiency improvement and optimisation of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. The WPT, by means of electromagnetic coupling, makes possible signal communication through non-air media such as human body and metallic containers. Some of the WPT applications are power transfer to implantable biomedical devices, wireless charging of electric vehicles and data transfer to sensors located inside sealed containers.

What are your plans for future development within your expertise?

Currently, my PhD research is concerned with antenna geometry design and optimisation to enhance efficiency in low frequency (frequency range below 100 Hz) WPT systems. However, industrial WPT systems have specific limitations and requirements. For example, in biomedical applications health and safety requirements confine the WPT system’s operating frequency and wattage levels. Many of these limitations neither have been mentioned in any academic research paper nor can be determined by the simulation software. To develop my research further, I would like to seek collaborations with industrial partners to tap into their technical knowledge in a market sense and prepare my research outcomes for further industrial implementation.

Any advice for today’s researchers?

The advice I would give my younger self is to stay out of your comfort zone and take risk. “Take risks; if you win, you will be happy; if you lose, you will be wise” – Peter Kreeft. Also, some advice to females in engineering “never let what people think about you, change your beliefs about yourself since they do not know you as you do.”

Interview (Research student) - Patrick Arnould What is your background?

I completed my BSc (Hons) in Computing for Artificial Intelligence in 2006 at University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, UK and started work straight after university writing software for hydrocarbon accounting systems used in the oil & gas industry. This included sales allocation systems, designing the calculations used to divide up quantities of gas or condensate sold between various partners in pipeline systems. After 5 years I transferred into the fiscal measurement team at the same company and was trained to maintain the instrumentation used in the measurement of gas and natural gas liquids which fed into the hydrocarbon accounting team systems. I later became the shift metering technician at the terminal and performed adhoc work offshore, especially commissioning jobs for new systems or metering system upgrades involving instrument replacement & recalibration, panel modifications, flow computer FATs. Eventually in 2014 a position came up in the Department of Energy & Climate Change in Aberdeen as a Measurement & Allocation Inspector so I resigned and relocated up to Aberdeen and am still in that role now, albeit working for the Oil & Gas Authority (many staff in the licensing and exploration division including myself were transferred into OGA when it was set up). My role involves regular offshore and onshore inspections of fiscal gas and oil measurement systems and I have a lot of engagement with industry, including offshore operators (i.e. users of measurement systems) and manufacturers in the measurement side of the industry.

What sparked your initial interest in your subject area?

Since working with them I have always been fascinated by ultrasonic flow meters, although I’m interested in other flow measurement methods too. During the course of my present role I needed to develop a greater understanding of the diagnostics available and whether changes could be related to measurement error. I also have an interest in mathematics, and this eventually manifested itself in developing a mathematical model using various theoretical 2D velocity profile functions, modelling the meter with line integrals and gaussian quadrature. It was a lot of fun and I had an industry guru to guide me when developing the model and analyzing the results. My line manager recommended I submit an abstract to the 2018 North Sea Flow Measurement Workshop, which was accepted, and I presented and won best paper. Some really interesting findings came out of it, but most importantly it started me down the research path. This paper has since been published in the Elsevier Journal of Flow Measurement and Instrumentation.

What are your interests?

I would like to see a greater use of ultrasonic flow meter diagnostics to inform decision making surrounding maintenance. There is a drive-in flow measurement towards condition-based monitoring, using the diagnostics to drive when you perform maintenance or remove the flow meter for

calibration, but not many operators are using this technique. I think uptake by industry is limited because the diagnostics themselves are limited; they don’t seem to tell us everything we need to know. They can also be complex to interpret, and effects seem to vary between different flow meter designs which doesn’t help.

My aim is to propose some design changes to the ultrasonic flow meter which will help encourage users to adopt this approach and also improve accuracy in adverse conditions, including reducing the ‘installation effect’ (caused by a change in velocity profile between calibration and service).

My research interests are anything related to ultrasonic flow measurement especially quadrature design, the characteristics of different path arrangements, diagnostic interpretation between different designs, limitations of diagnostics and quantitative diagnostics which is an emerging area. I’m also interested in mathematics with a special focus on mathematical modelling and approximation theory applied to ultrasonic flow meters.

Outside of research and work I have a wonderful family with four children which is a lot of fun. I am slowly developing my skills in machining and have a lathe at home which I am teaching myself to use with the help of various books. Up until recently I used to ride and maintain motorcycles too.

What are your plans for future development within your expertise?

Part of my research will include studying the effect of the cavities the ultrasonic transducers are placed in. These cause vortices to form which affect accuracy and diagnostic interpretation.

As a result of this computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an area I need to develop my knowledge in, especially modelling of turbulent gas flows in Fluent with various upstream configurations such as in & out of plane bends, expanders, reducers and blank tees (often seen on metering station inlet headers). My supervisors are well versed in this subject and have suggested exercises to help. My aim is to eventually be able to develop the theory including turbulence models completely from first principles, right down to how it is implemented in the CFD solver.

My interest in Gaussian quadrature has sparked an interest in orthogonal polynomials, but it’s early days and I have a lot of reading to do. I’ve bought some classic books on the subject, but I need to develop my knowledge of analysis further first. I’m starting to build my knowledge surrounding techniques used in mathematical proofs.

Any advice for today’s researchers?

I’ve only recently started myself, but it might help some to read how the family and work side is managed. To help with this my employer kindly agreed to a compressed working week which involved me submitting a business case. Part of the argument was that the research was aligned with the organisations objectives which I think helped and I put a rough number on the potential savings for industry which could result from research in my area. The nature of my job also makes studying easier due to the time alone in the evenings when I’m away with work and I’m fortunate that I work in the area of my research. This way the impact on family life isn’t huge and the time I have is used effectively. Snatching time when travelling, even when commuting 40 minutes on the train also helps make progress. Of course, with different circumstances it could be done at home in the evenings easily enough and plenty of people successfully do that.

Another thing I should mention is the connections I have made with experts in industry and academia are invaluable. Take every chance you can to engage with them to seek feedback on what you are proposing.

Academic Research Activities Dr Wai-keung Fung & Dr Radhakrishna Prabhu The team have completed guest editing a special issue on “Sensing in Oil and Gas Applications” in the Sensors (ISSN 1424-8220) journal published by MDPI. The special issue can be accessed at https://www.mdpi.com/journal/sensors/special_issues/OS. The journal Sensors is an open access journal with impact factor of 3.031. Paper submission was open from June 2018 to 31st December 2019. The special issue has attracted 29 submissions and 15 papers (14 original research articles plus 1 review paper) were published online. Total citations of the special issue are 29, total abstract views are 17472 and the total full paper views/downloads are 22315 (accessed on 26/02/2020).
