INCLUSIVITY

We remain loyal to our founding principles to educate bright local pupils, irrespective of background or financial circumstances, and we inherently believe in establishing a culture of diversity and acceptance, and in educating our pupils in a welcoming, tolerant community where each individual is valued and enjoys a deep sense of belonging.

RESPECT

We nurture an atmosphere of mutual respect between all members of our community, and foster self-respect and selfesteem in terms of physical health, emotional maturity and personal wellbeing, while establishing lasting friendships in a positive, happy environment.

Our School Values are at the very heart of our ethos.

SCHOLARSHIP

We encourage the growth of intellectual curiosity, independence, creativity, innovation and habits of learning within a scholarly community through inspirational subject specialists who provoke and stretch the pupils’ minds and inculcate a lifelong love of learning.

COURAGE

We develop leadership, teamwork, resilience and life skills through a diverse range of activities where all pupils, regardless of their talents and attributes, are encouraged to challenge themselves, take appropriate risks and work hard to fulfil their potential.

INTEGRITY

We promote the development of self-discipline and responsibility, spirituality and a personal moral code, and cultivate an ethos where enduring qualities of decency, honesty, courtesy, humility and good humour are celebrated.

COLLABORATION

We work closely with others for mutual enrichment, and encourage a spirit of generosity and service, a sense of perspective, and a firm belief that we can work in partnership with others, locally and internationally, to make a difference and have a positive impact on society.

It is this warm and encouraging environment that not only fosters a lifelong love of learning but also helps our pupils develop emotional intelligence and resilience.

Capturing the vast array of activities at RGS Prep in words and pictures is a delightful challenge. While it's impossible to showcase everything, this Review aims to present a diverse snapshot of the past year’s learning, activities, performances, and achievements. Through this, we hope to highlight some of the most memorable and impactful moments across the school, including the report from this year’s ISI inspection: a testament to the exceptional standards of education and care throughout our school.

At RGS Prep, our primary focus is on our pupils' wellbeing. When children feel safe and secure, they are ready and eager to learn. Our pupils are enthusiastic, curious, energetic, wellmannered, polite, and unique. Above all, they are happy. It is this warm and

encouraging environment that not only fosters a lifelong love of learning but also helps them develop emotional intelligence and resilience.

Each event and achievement has contributed to the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere at RGS Prep. Whether it was a captivating school play, a thrilling sports competition, or a thought-provoking science project, our pupils have shown remarkable dedication and enthusiasm.

As I look through this Review, I am proud of the sense of happiness, growth, and success that define our school community and I look forward to ensuring that, together with the commitment of my staff, our pupils continue to thrive and flourish in all aspects of their lives.

Mr Toby Freeman-Day, Head

Wel lbei ng

Our commitment to happiness and wellbeing is absolute and our whole community works together to create a positive environment in which our pupils can flourish, both emotionally and subsequently academically. We believe the wellbeing framework and tools we equip our pupils with will prepare them well for not only their time with us, but as they move into the next stage of their education, and beyond.

The happiness and wellbeing of our pupils is at the heart of every decision that we make and everything that we do at RGS Prep.

Cyber Wise

In today’s ever-evolving technological world, Online Safety Day offered invaluable workshops led by a Childnet expert. These tailored sessions for boys in Years 1 to 5 provided interactive and age-appropriate guidance, helping them build the skills and confidence to stay safe and respectful while navigating the online world.

Hygge Up and Get Cosy!

In February, the boys immersed themselves in the Danish tradition of ‘Hygge’: finding joy in life’s simple pleasures and creating a cosy, comforting atmosphere. To mark the occasion, they arrived in their snuggly dressing gowns, accompanied by their favourite cuddly toys. A warming cup of hot chocolate was the perfect end to the celebration of wellbeing.

World Mental Health Day

In October, we observed World Mental Health Day in support of the charity YoungMinds. An assembly focused on the importance of speaking up and supporting one another, and kindness certificates were awarded to pupils who had shown thoughtfulness and consideration to others. The boys wore yellow, the charity’s signature colour, to show their support and enjoyed a range of fundraising activities, including smiley face biscuit decorating, guessing the number of yellow items in a jar and naming the mystery teddy.

Anti-Bullying Week

This year’s Anti-Bullying Week focused on the theme of Respect, with emphasis on appreciating everyone within our community. We began the week by wearing mismatched socks, a simple yet powerful way for pupils and staff to celebrate our uniqueness.

A highlight of the week was the Friendship Photobooth, where the boys had a great time posing with their friends, sporting funny costumes and props that brought plenty of laughter.

Years 1 to 4 took part in AntiBullying Workshops run by West End in Schools. Through role-playing scenarios, pupils explored how to respond with respect and make positive choices when faced with challenging situations.

'Moving Up' Afternoon

Before the start of the summer holiday, all current pupils along with new boys joining the school spent the afternoon in their new classroom with their new teachers. Boys enjoyed a series of fun and energetic ‘getting to know you’ activities and are looking forward to seeing some familiar

and friendly faces when they return in September. The afternoon also provided a great opportunity for new parents to meet other parents and staff.

Buddying Up

Our younger pupils quickly settled into school life, thanks to the support of their older buddies. After being introduced on their first day in September, the new buddies embraced their roles with enthusiasm, spending several snack times together to build strong connections. Throughout the year, the buddies have enjoyed a variety of shared activities such as reading, playing board games, crafting, making pizza and having picnics. The older boys have consistently demonstrated great leadership, setting a positive example for their younger friends.

Academic

We are incredibly proud of the broad academic provision we offer at RGS Prep and this year was no exception.

Our pupils, with their thirst for knowledge and healthily competitive nature, have enjoyed participating in a variety of workshops, competitions, national days/weeks and collaborating with local girls’ schools.

Celebrating the Written Word

We celebrated World Book Week with a range of exciting activities. Pre-Prep enjoyed a performance of The Hare and the Tortoise by Aesop’s Touring Theatre Company. Author Lucy Reynolds led a nature-themed workshop, poet Simon Mole performed for Pre-Prep, and author Adam Baron ran creative writing sessions with Years 3–6. Highlights included a reading challenge, book fair, CSI reading workshop, and book cover design. The week ended with pupils dressing as their favourite book characters for World Book Day.

Celebrating Success

Prize Giving took place for our Prep pupils during the last week of term; a fitting way for proud parents and teachers to mark the many scholarly achievements across the year. The audience were also treated to some uplifting performances from the boys, demonstrating their collaborative abilities in music and dance.

Year 6 Prize Giving is always bittersweet as we celebrate the boys' learning and achievements at RGS Prep and watch them move on to the next stage of their educational career. In attendance were Chairman of Governors, Sarah Creedy, Headmaster of RGS Senior, Dr Cox, and former RGS Prep pupil, Tim Peters, who gave an inspiring keynote speech.

Divide and Conquer Year 5 and 6 boys demonstrated impressive mathematical skills in the Junior Mathematics Challenge, with 9 earning Gold awards and 16 receiving Silver.

We celebrated British Science Week with a variety of cross-curricular activities exploring the theme of Time. Pupils investigated erosion in Geography, reaction times in Maths, sound and speed in Music and PE and created sun dials in DT. They joined a live lesson on ocean and climate, took part in 'The Big Plastic Count' and enjoyed challenges including a paper aeroplane competition and a poster contest. The week ended with the Science Fair, where pupils showcased their projects to staff judges from RGS Senior. It was a fun and inspiring week that highlighted how science connects to every aspect of learning.

Making a Case

Year 6 pupils developed their formal debating skills by competing in teams. The winning group earned the opportunity to visit Guildford High School, where they observed a lively debate on social media by the girls, and then confidently presented their own debate on the benefits of a three-day weekend.

Year 1 asked everyone to ‘get on board’ with a fun transportthemed performance of songs and those studying instruments showcased their progress, whilst Year 2’s Bugs’ Breakfast introduced us to some fascinating facts with their ‘Not So Creepy Crawley’ tale and songs.

Scaling Up

Beyond their weekly lessons, pupils from Years 1 to 6 eagerly took the stage at Informal Music Concerts, sharing their growing instrumental skills with proud parents. These relaxed performances offered a wonderful chance for pupils to gain confidence and celebrate their musical journeys.

Carols by Candlelight

Held in the beautiful setting of Guildford Cathedral, the Carol Service featured pupils singing a mix of traditional and modern carols. The candlelit atmosphere created a warm and peaceful mood, making it a special occasion for the many parents, grandparents and friends who came to listen.

Chorister Notes

The choristers have had a busy and successful year, singing Evensong twice weekly as well as numerous services and concerts across the Cathedral calendar, from Advent and Christmas through Holy Week and Pentecost. Highlights included collaborations with visiting choirs, performances of major works, recordings for the Cathedral’s online Advent calendar, concerts and several boys winning music scholarships to senior schools. The year concluded with the boys preparing for an exciting tour to Denmark, featuring concerts in Viborg Cathedral and Copenhagen alongside cultural visits.

DR AMA

We encourage our pupils to embrace creative expression and step into the spotlight, in whatever capacity they choose. From leading and supporting roles to assisting with lighting, sound, and costumes, there are a wide variety of performance and backstage opportunities for all pupils.

Play in a Week

The Perseus and the Gorgon’s Head Play in a Week production was incredibly impressive, especially given the tight timeframe. The cast showed amazing dedication and enthusiasm, delivering clear and lively performances despite the quick rehearsal schedule. The creativity in set design, props, and costumes helped bring the story vividly to life, making the myth both accessible and exciting to the delight of audiences of pupils and families.

Drama Club participants delivered a vibrant and memorable performance of Rock Bottom, the popular Stone Age musical by Craig Hawes. Their energy and enthusiasm lit up the stage, impressing audiences, including Mr Hawes himself, who attended the show and hosted a pre-performance Q&A. He praised the pupils’ talent, curiosity and thoughtful questions. With creative costumes, lively music and the support of dedicated staff, the production was a resounding success.

Speaking Up at Speak Out

A truly impressive set of performances in the final of our public speaking competition, Speak Out. Pupils recited poems from memory, performed scenes from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, spoke of inspiring figures and read stories to a captivated audience of pupils and staff. The judges had a hard time selecting the winners.
