To paint is also to design architecture, or to write stories about contemporary social history. It is a specific way of inhabiting the world, with which to transform the artistic gesture into an instrument of reflection and an opportunity to share it. This is true for Edi Hila, who has made painting his main artistic practice, which allows him to convey images about reality.
Edi Hila presents his second solo exhibition with the gallery, once again unfoling across all three exhibition spaces of Via Stradella. He always pays scrupulous attention to the objective dimension of reality: what are we surrounded by? What are the structures which contain us? And above all, who are we sharing our lives with?
The starting point for the creation of the new series of paintings is the daily observation of the public spaces in which he found himself spending time over the last few years. And with them, the individuals who inhabit them: both are sensed as the litmus test of the current historical period, so emblematic and difficult, due to war, the climate crisis and economic challenges.
Hila then goes on a journey with painting, building a map in which to locate the various hubs of human civilization. In his work lays no presumption to possess the truth, rather, the intention to decipher moods, urgencies and introspections, to help us understand ourselves and others.
For this reason, the subjects of the paintings on view are public spaces such as streets, carrousels, cars, subways. They are emblems of sharedness, participation and universality. Some of them are anonymous, others respond to a personal biographical archive, but in any case they are devoid of elitism, far from ideal settings, to be able to portray the common theme of human emotionality in our contemporary world.

The titles of the works make this very clear: In the Middle of the Road; At the Abandoned Yard; Temporary Shelter; Broken Circus; Oda on the Boulevard – all of them executed in 2023. These are places that can accommodate anyone in their anonymity, without distiction or rejection. Yet they appear empty and silent. The human figure is only present in three works, two of which are entitled Limbo and the other one Portrait. All of them are situated in the subway, underground: a place detached from the sky, which is linked par excellence to concepts of transience and waiting, as opposed to stasis and permanence.
To quote Zef Paci - Curator of Edi Hila’s solo exhibition at COD in Tirana ( July 14August 10, 2023) - “His effort is not directed at displaying what is visible, but rather at making visible. And this leads to an inner dimension that seeks to express all that concerns the air, the atmosphere we smell, its transparencies and reflections”.

After the exhibition project devoted to him that ended last August at the Centre for Openness and Dialogue in Tirana, the choice of Madre a further confirmation of the growing appreciation and recognition of Hila’s work by international institutions.
Limbo, 2023, oil on canvas, 118 x 190 cmEdi Hila was born in Shkodër, Albania, in 1944. He lives and works in Tirana, Albania. As an important figure of the Balkan art scene, Edi Hila has borne witness to the social and political history of Albania. Through his life experience, sensitivity and painting he reached peaks of great poignancy.
In spite of the intellectual isolation caused by the regime of Enver Hoxha, he attended the National Academy of Art in Tirana and managed to gain extensive knowledge of the art of XX century. After his artistic debut, during the seventies and eighties, he was forced by the regime to work in a governmentrun poultry processing factory as part of a reformation program. Only in the nineties – after the fall of communism in Albania – he returned to painting; defining the style and contents that still today distinguish his research. In his practice, time – historical and personal, photographic and pictorial –encounters space – exhibiting and personal, geographical and political.
Hila’s creative process is comprised of multiple sessions over which the artist reworks details, parts of the composition, layering, passages. Each of his works becomes a “pictorial palimpsest” embracing, in a formal and chromatic synthesis, various stages of his life that led him to create a specific work. He has held teaching positions at the Fine Art Academy in Tirana for several decades since 1988. Hila received the Onufri Award in 1993 and 1998; in 2019 he was awarded the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program fellowship.
Recent solo shows include Territore te pervojave te jetuara, Center for Openness and Dialogue, Tirana (2023); The Sound of the Tuba, Secession, Vienna (2020); Edi Hila: Painter of Transformation, which originated at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and travelled to the National Gallery of Arts, Tirana (2018); and Mirages of a Boulevard, Center of Oppeness and Dialogue, Tirana (2016).
The artist has participated in a number of international exhibitions including: Life, without buildings, gta Exhibitions, ETH Zurich, Zurich (2022); Learning from Athens, documenta 14, Kassel, Germany, and Athens, Greece (2017); Potential Monuments of Unrealised Futures (with Adrian Paci), Architectural Association, London, travelled to Albanian Pavillion at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy (2014); The Desire for Freedom, Art in Europe from 1945 to the present day, Historical Museum, Berlin; travelled to Palazzo Reale, Milan, Italy and Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn (2013); Touched, Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool, UK (2010); Blood and Honey – The Future’s Balkan, Essl Museum, Vienna (2003); After the Wall. Art and Culture in Post-Communist Europe, Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1999); travelled to Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin and Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin, and Ludwig Museum, Budapest (2000); and the Albanian Pavillion at the 48th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy (1999).
His work is represented in collections of museums such as: Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; Musée national d’art moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Fonds municipal d’art contemporain de la Ville de Paris; FRAC Pays de la Loire, France; FRAC Auvergne, France, and the National Gallery of Arts, Tirana.

Fare pittura significa anche progettare architetture, oppure scrivere racconti sulla storia sociale contemporanea. È un modo specifico di stare al mondo, con cui poter trasformare il gesto artistico nello strumento della riflessione e insieme nell’occasione con cui condividerla. Così è per Edi Hila, che ha fatto della pittura la sua principale forma di pratica artistica, con cui restituire immagini sulla realtà.
Edi Hila presenta la sua seconda personale in galleria, occupando anche questa volta tutti e tre gli spazi di via Stradella. È sempre presente in lui un’attenzione scrupolosa al dato oggettuale della realtà in cui siamo: da che cosa siamo circondati? In quali strutture siamo contenuti? E poi, soprattutto, con chi stiamo condividendo le nostre vite?
Il punto di partenza per la realizzazione della nuova serie di dipinti è stata l’osservazione quotidiana dei luoghi pubblici in cui si è ritrovato a trascorrere del tempo negli ultimi anni. E con essi gli individui che li abitano, entrambi percepiti come il tornasole dell’attuale periodo storico, così emblematico e difficile, per la guerra, la crisi climatica, le difficoltà economiche.
Decide allora di fare con la pittura un viaggio, costruendo una mappa in cui individuare i vari centri della civiltà umana. Non c’è presunzione di possedere la verità, ma l’intenzione di decifrare stati d’animo, urgenze e introspezioni, per aiutarci a vedere noi stessi e a comprendere gli altri.
Per questa ragione i soggetti dei dipinti esposti sono luoghi pubblici come strade, giostre, automobili, metropolitane. Sono emblemi della condivisione, della partecipazione e dell’universalità; luoghi anonimi alcuni e rispondenti ad un archivio biografico personale altri, ma comunque privi di elitarismi, lontani da scenografie ideali per poter rappresentare il tema comune dell’emotività dell’uomo nella nostra contemporaneità.
Portrait, 2023, olio su tela, 71 x 95 cmI titoli dei dipinti – tutti realizzati nel 2023 – lo dicono in modo molto chiaro: In mezzo alla strada, Nel cortile abbandonato, Riparo provvisorio, Circo rotto, Commercio sul boulevard. Sono luoghi che nel loro anonimato sanno ospitare chiunque, senza distinzioni o negazioni. Eppure qui appaiono svuotati e silenti. La figura umana c’è solo in tre opere, due delle quali si intitolano Limbo e una Ritratto. Tutti e tre sono ambientati nelle metropolitane, sotto terra, in un luogo distaccato dal cielo, che per antonomasia è legato ai concetti di transitorietà e attesa, mai di stasi e permanenza.
Come detto anche da Zef Paci – curatore della mostra personale di Edi Hila al COD di Tirana (14 luglio – 10 agosto 2023) – “Il suo sforzo non è orientato a offrire ciò che è visibile, ma a rendere visibile qualcosa. E questo porta ad una dimensione interiore che cerca di esprimere ciò che riguarda l’aria, l’atmosfera che annusiamo, le sue trasparenze e i suoi riflessi”.
Siamo felici di annunciare che un’importante mostra personale di Edi Hila sarà presentata al museo Madre di Napoli prossimamente. Dopo il progetto espositivo interamente dedicato a lui conclusosi lo scorso agosto al Center for Openness and Dialogue di Tirana, la scelta del Madre non è che un’ulteriore conferma dell’apprezzamento del lavoro di Hila e del riconoscimento della sua salienza da parte di istituzioni internazionali.

Edi Hila è nato a Shkodra, Albania, nel 1944. Vive e lavora a Tirana, Albania. Tra le figure centrali della scena artistica dei Balcani, Edi Hila è un testimone della storia sociale e politica dell’Albania. Un testimone che, tramite le esperienze di vita, la sua sensibilità e la pittura, ha raggiunto vette di grande intensità espressiva.
Nonostante l’isolamento intellettuale creato dal regime di Enver Hoxha, studiò alla Accademia d’Arte Nazionale di Tirana, e riuscì ad approfondire la storia dell’arte del XX secolo. Dopo i suoi esordi artistici, negli anni Settanta e Ottanta fu obbligato dal regime a lavorare in un campo di rieducazione nell’industria del pollame. Solo dopo la caduta del comunismo in Albania, negli anni Novanta, tornò a dipingere andando a definire lo stile e i contenuti che contraddistinguono la sua ricerca ancora oggi. Nella sua pittura il tempo –storico e personale, fotografico e pittorico – incontra lo spazio – espositivo e quotidiano, geografico e politico.
Il processo creativo di Hila si compone di molteplici sessioni durante le quali l’artista riconsidera dettagli, zone della composizione, velature, passaggi. Ogni sua opera diventa come una “pittura palinsesto” comprendente, in una sintesi formale e cromatica, momenti differenti di vita legati ad un preciso sentire che lo ha condotto ad una specifica opera. A partire dal 1988 ha ricoperto ruoli d’insegnamento in diverse discipline all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Tirana. Hila è stato insignito del premio Onufri nel 1993 e nel 1998; nel 2019 ha vinto una borsa di studio del programma DAAD Artists-in-Berlin.
