ducation furnishes an individual with the necessary skills and knowledge that he or she requires to become an efficient part of a society. According to the World Bank, education can also be one of the strongest weapons to trim down poverty and to develop the well-being people of the nation.

In the Philippines, education is still the top priority and despite the different changes and developments established by the government and different sectors, there is

still a big space that left for improvements for the standards of the Philippine education. As part of the efforts of the present administration to respond to the apparent needs of

the education sector, the Department of Education (DepEd) pushed for the implementation of the “Enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program”.

K-12: EDUCATION FOR THE NEW GENERATION

The K-12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of Basic Education where it includes six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School (Grade 7-10) and two years of Senior High School (Grades 11-12).

The addition of two years of senior high school aims to give enough time for students to strengthen academic skills.

Its main concept is to offer sufficient time for the students to master their skills, develop life long learners and to practice graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills progress, employment and entrepreneurship.

This curriculum allows s p e c i a l i z a t i o n s in science and technology, agriculture and fisheries, sports, music and arts, entrepreneurship and business.

This educational system is widely adopted around the w o r l d

and the Philippines, belonging to the third world also implemented this strategy for a highquality education. The objective of this program is to generate more progressive, productive and dependable people who are equipped with the important skills and learning for employments.

In the last quarter of 2010 where the DepEd prepared a discussion paper about the program, it is believed that K-12 is the cure to defective educational system of the country. One indicator of a malfunctioning education system is the low scores of the Filipino students in taking up National Achievement Test. It is also noted that the past ten-year curriculum is jam-packed wherein

students are obligated to soak up all the necessary knowledge and skills in a limited time that results to unprepared high school graduates for employment, business and even in higher education.

This explains why the number of unemployment in the Philippines is increasing every year.

The short time of the basic education is also a difficulty for the overseas Filipino Workers, especially those with professions and those who wanted to study abroad.

Filipino

graduates are not automatically recognized as professionals abroad because the basic curriculum is usually insufficient.

This is what K-12 brings for us, a chance for every learner to have a higher quality education that is necessary for him to gain the required kills and knowledge to be prepared for the world outside the school. An enhanced education that gives enough time that is internationally accepted and recognized.

lmost four years had passed after the Basic Education Curriculum was upgraded to K-12 Basic Education Program. K-12, also known as Republic Act No. 10533 aims to enhance the Philippine basic education system by the intensification of the curriculum and adding two years of education. This improvement of the Philippine education also encompasses the providing of the shortage of classrooms, teachers, water and sanitation, textbooks and seats.

Lack of classrooms is one of the primary problems of Philippine education. Last 2010, there is a shortage of 66, 800 classrooms. About 32, 127 classrooms were constructed as of January 31, 2013 while 17, 939 classrooms were programmed for the year 2013.

The ratio of

teachers employed is outnumbered by the students. There is a demand of 145, 827 teachers last 2010. By January 13, 2013, there are 34,953 teachers were hired. For 2013, about 61, 510 is planned to be employed.

Water and sanitation needs were supplied. The lack of seats were sustained. In fact, ongoing projects are implemented to provide a quality education for the future of a productive generation.

PROTECTING THE YOUTH

The policy aims to protect the children from all forms of violence that may be caused by adults, persons in authority as well as their fellow students, includingbullying.

To provide special protection to children who are threatened or endangered by circumstances which affect their normal development and over which are beyond their control, and to assist the concerned agencies in their rehabilitation.

According to the Department of Education of the Philippines, they conducted a survey which says that 50% students said they have experienced abuse in school and 74 % victims of bullying.

In action, DepED implemented a policy and a guideline, DepED Order No. 40, s. 2012 to protect children in school from abuse, violence, exploitation, discrimination, bullying

in other form of abuse.

This policy is to ensure that such special protection from all forms of abuse and exploitation and care as is necessary for the child’s well-being, taking into account the primary rights and duties of parents, legal guardians, or other individuals who are legally responsible and exercise custody over the child.

Now days our government make a law for bullying it is the anti bullying law or the Republic act 10627, our government do this because the cases of the student that was bullied was getting bigger. Many students here in the Philippines are not attending class because they are bullied by their schoolmates.

There are no excuses for a bully here in the Philippines because it is not right and it is against the law. In order to remove all the bullies in our country we need to understand them because they are only bullying because they have problems too and they want a friend.
