Fashion constantly changes and so has Reykjavik Fashion and Design. We have, in the past few months, worked on revamping the look of the magazine, and couldn't be happier with the result. We continue with a high standard for the content, covering both the people and products that we believe in. And so we turn our eyes towards summer when families and friends have barbeques and picnics, and work some, hang out, and work some more. The sun charges us with energy and it is an ideal time to visit one of the local swimming pools or ice-cream parlours, or even go camping.

With a fresh narrative for fashion this season, we were inspired by bold colours and pastel influences. For this issue, we had a lot of fun shooting our very first fashion spread with countless switches back and forth between styles and looks. We are lucky to have Urður Bergs as our cover girl and Tatiana showcasing the beach and summer make-up look. Urður tells us about her band Hormónar, which recently won the Icelandic Music Experiments, and their future plans looks bright.

We met up with Gavin Evans who took the marvellous portraits of David Bowie now showcasing at Harpan. We spoke to a few of the members of the Icelandic soccer team, who told us what they do when in Iceland. For the first time in Iceland’s history, the boys made it through to the final qualifiers for the European Football Championship in France this summer. There is much more for you to enjoy in this issue, so it is best to leave you guys to it. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it.

PLAYING THE FIELD

I always try to go to the Austur Indíafjelagið when I am home. Indian restaurants abroad tend to be very alike, but Austur Indíafjelagið offers great Indian cuisine, made with high-quality Icelandic ingredients. It’s an easy place to recommend. I also hit the popular pizza place, Eldofninn. Aside from food, I often go to the Grafarholt golf course. I also try to visit my family over in Skagafjörður. There are endless things to see when it comes to wildlife, nature, and historical sites in Iceland. I sincerely recommend going with North West Iceland Adventures to see Skagafjörður. Lastly, I love going to rock concerts, especially if Brainpolice or Agent Fresco is playing.

Kári Árnason When I’m in Iceland, it’s always best to head straight home, get together with my family, have some good food, and catch up. Getting coffee with my grandparents is also a good thing to do. After I’ve spent time with my family, I see friends around town, grab a coffee, and talk. I also like to eat at different places, one of which is Vegamót.

Alfreð Finnbogason While Iceland first participated in the Olympic Games in 1908, it took until 1956 for an Icelander to win an Olympic medal.

Considering this relatively recent foray into the international sports world, Icelandic athletes have certainly been stepping up to the plate, field, court or wherever as of late, showcasing their impressive skills in ­ various international arenas. ­ Media ­ attention has most recently been centred on the success of the Icelandic men’s football team, which, for the first time ever, secured a spot in the­ UEFA Euro 2016 to be held in France. With this qualification, the team has secured the­ title of ‘smallest country to participate’ in this tournament.

With around 330,000 ­ people, Iceland is less than one-sixth of the size of Slovenia, which holds the title for second-smallest country to qualify for the UEFA European Championship. Though its small population doesn’t seem conducive to such a highlevel of sporting achievements, Iceland has been working relentlessly to improve its facilities.

Since the early 2000s, football facilities, coaches and players have popped up all over the country, fostering a fresh new generation of skilled and dedicated football stars. While Icelandic football players have achieved a high level of fame at home, some have even 12 | R E Y K J AV Í K

carved a place for themselves in the football leagues abroad. Athletes such as Eiður Guðjohnsen, Gylfi Sigurðsson and Aron Gunnarsson play football in premier leagues in other countries.

Amidst the hubbub around the men’s team, the Icelandic women´s team has aptly noted its own success. At the time of writing, FIFA ranks the women’s team 20th overall, with an average position of 17th since FIFA started its ranking system. While the participation of the men’s team is certainly noteworthy, the women’s team has already been to an impressive two Euro games. Iceland’s success is not limited to football, either. In addition to solid performances in several world championships, the Icelandic men´s handball team secured a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The team went on to claim the bronze medal in the 2010 European Championship.

Icelanders have also found success in the swimming world. In February of this year, Icelandic swimmer Jón Margeir Sverisson set two world records for the 100-metre and 400-metre freestyles while participating in the Parasport Games in Malmö. Eygló Ósk Gústafsdóttir won Iceland’s ‘Athlete of the Year’ award in 2015, for breaking Icelandic and Nordic records for the 200-metre back-

Since I’m not in Iceland often, I try to use my time here well. It’s always great at the Hotel Mamma! I also try to spend as much time with friends and family as possible. When I am home, I usually go and get my treats from Vesturbæar’s ice cream shop. Hamborgarabúllan hamburgers are an absolute must as well. Last time I was back, I spent a lot of time­ swim­ming in Grafarvogslaug with my friends. It was fantastic!

With all these talented athletes, it’s no wonder Icelanders are psyched to celebrate sports victories abroad, especially, of course, when these occur amidst the lights and hype of the European Championship.

We caught up with football stars from the Icelandic men’s team to see where we might be able to catch them on one of their visits home. In preparation for the­ Euro 2016, we also feel obliged to say: GO ­ ICELAND! SUMMER 2016

Ari Freyr Skúlason In my opinion, Icelandic food is the best, so I take every opportunity I can to gain weight when I come back here. My favourite is pizza, usually from Eldsmiðjan or Dom­ino’s, with pepperoni, cream cheese and jalapenos. Sloppy joes are also a must.

Since I’m an early bird, I enjoy visiting bakeries in the morning. Beyond that, I like spending time with my family and friends. My fiancé, Ragnheiður, and I always try to find time for the Blue Lagoon. Often though, I’m still playing for the national team when I visit, so I might not have time to do everything I’d like. I have to focus on the goals ahead.

Optical Studio’s Keflavík International Airport store offers full-service optical solutions with the latest technology in eye care. Its opticians perform eye exams and contact lens fittings and make products in just 15 minutes. Travellers have the opportunity to get quality glasses with designer frames while waiting in the terminal, duty free. Kjartan B. Kristjánsson, the owner, optician and chairman of the board at Optical Studio, recently spoke with Reykjavík Fashion & Design about the unique service that a growing number of travellers are taking advantage of.

When did you start Optical Studio?

I’m a licensed optician, and I started my own company in 1982. I set up a shop in the town of Keflavík that year and later one at the US Naval Base in Kefla­ vík. In 1998, I established a private shop in Keflavík International Airport Terminal. Today, we have three shops with 35 employees.

When did you have the idea to set up shop at Keflavík International Airport?

Everything you could want, you could buy in airports around the world, but you couldn’t get customized prescription glasses. I had the idea to give customers new prescription 24 | R E Y K J AV Í K

glasses while they waited in the terminal.

How long does it take for customers to get their lenses?

We keep over 3.000 prescription ­ lenses in stock. We provide full optical services for glasses and contact lenses in less than 15 minutes.

How does this service work?

The customer comes into the shop, they pick the frame they like best, and we do the eye exam. After the prescription is determined, we make the glasses. The lenses are shaped to fit the frames, and the optician assembles the glasses. Once the glasses are ready, they are adjusted to the customer’s liking, and they have their glasses. It takes just under 15 minutes to make them.

Is this a popular service in the airport?

We offer quick service and it’s duty free, so it’s been very popular with Icelanders. We want to get the message out to travellers that they can get quality glasses with designer frames in just 15 minutes at the terminal. It sounds like a gimmick, but it’s true. It takes just 15 minutes.

Is it possible to pre-order glasses?

over, glasses can be pre-ordered and picked up at the airport for the duty-free price. All glasses ordered for the Keflavík Terminal shop are made in the airport.

What brands do you offer for frames?

We have a wide variety of designer glasses.

Do you offer 15-minute service for customers looking for contact lenses?

Yes, we offer full optical services for contact lens wearers. We take the prescription, do the fitting and make the contacts on site.

Hormónar is a Reykjavík-based band, which recently won the The Icelandic ­ Music Experiments (IME), an annual music competition held in Reykjavík. The competition has been running for the past 30 years, for ­ people aged 18-25. The aim of the IME is to create a platform for young musicians to get their music across.

Urður Bergs, our cover girl, is the bass player in Hormónar; we sat her down and asked her a few questions.

When and why did you start playing?

My best friends and I were driving one cold winter night in December last year, and Brynhildur, our lead singer, asked us why we weren’t in a band. Nobody could answer her question, so we went to Örn Gauti’s garage; he is the drum player. Örn handed me the bass and we started playing, and it sounded really good.

What was the first tune you learned?

I don’t exactly play by notes. I just do something that sounds good and gives me butterflies when I play it. I play the bass from my heart.

Where did you get the name Hormónar from?

I love Mac DeMarco because his music makes me feel something else. I also love Alt-J, mostly because of their performance here in Reykjavík. I felt something I had never experienced. When I’m looking for a role model for my performance, I look more towards acting and musical theatre.

Hjalti, the saxophone player in our band, was walking down Laugavegur, and for some reason his pants fell down. He looked to see weather anyone had seen him and spotted a few Mormons, one of them yelled at him ‘You whoremoan!!’ or in Icelandic ‘Helvítis Hórmóni’ We thought it was funny and decided to steal the prhase and name the band after it.

Your band recently won the IME; congratu­lations. How long has the band been together?

Since December 2015, with a two-month break when our singer travelled to Costa Rica.

Did you know the bands you were competing against?

We listened to everyone’s demos before we competed.

How did your band come about?

Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?

We are all best friends and we are all musical.

Which famous musicians have you learned from?

For example, in Mac DeMarco’s album, Salad Days, I listened to the bass line which, is very simple but still gives some ‘umph’ to the sound.

I get very inspired by simple bass lines.

Whats next for Hórmónar?

We’re playing at Secret Solstice and also Iceland Airwaves. The plan is to write and publish an EP between those two festivals. We will probably be gigging a lot this summer, and are looking for more gigs because we love music and we love performing.

Could Hormónar be Iceland’s next big thing? Of Monsters and Men, won the competition in 2010 so this is definitely a huge jump in the right-direction.

Vorhus Living by Sveinbjörg is an Icelandic company that boasts a broad range of design items and homewares. The design is inspired by the Icelandic nature, from the birds to the leaves and flowers. You can be sure you’ll get quality when you buy the company’s products.

The Icelandic artist Sveinbjörg Hallgríms­ dóttir is the designer and owner of the company that bears her name. She has worked as an artist for about 30 years. She founded the company in 2007 by creating greeting cards based on her original artwork. Today, the company boasts a broad range of 150 design items and homewares.

Sveinbjörg’s designs are inspired by Icelandic animals and plants, and she keeps quality in mind while designing. Scandinavian style, adventurous color combinations and comprehensive product range for beautiful homes are the company’s defining characteristics.

The inspiration

Sveinbjörg grew up by the sea in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, where you can see every shade of blue and grey, depending on the weather. She spent summers at her grandmother and grandfather’s farm, where she watched birds and saw the flowers bloom. Therefore, nature has always had a big impact on her and on her art and design.

Sveinbjörg produces a wide variety of items, including candle­ holders, porcelains, tea towels, cushions, scarves, wool blankets, greeting cards and towels. Each year, she adds something new to the collection. You can buy Sveinbjorg’s products in various stores in Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Hong Kong and New York.

The aim of the company is to produce beautiful items that are fairly priced and environmentally friendly. It is also an inspirational workplace with a creative atmosphere and a staff of four women who all play a role in changing designs into products. Every de-

tail is carefully planned, and all products are made with care. This year, a collection of new towels and kitchen linen is being added. The colors of the sea and roses are the main focus this year, providing a breath of freshness.

It was developed from a ­folded A4 wrapper, and it evolved into the envelope box that we use today. We ­decided to use a thicker type of paper with a matte finish, something with texture and warmth. The paper is Munken 300g. The thickness of the paper allows folding, opening and closing, and it supports the packaging, allowing it to ­ become a serving tray when opened.

Gourmet chocolate may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of locally produced Icelandic foods. Omnom Chocolate, the brainchild of friends André Visage, Kjartan Gíslason, Óskar Þórðarson, and Karl Viggó Vigfús­son, is making waves in the chocolate scene. Omnom ­ produces chocolate from cacao beans sourced from Africa, South America, Asia and the Caribbean. They sort, roast and ground the beans to unlock the unique characteristics of the beans, which are then translated into chocolate. Meanwhile, the package design is playful, colourful and almost as delicious as the chocolate.

Reykjavík Fashion & Design recently sat down with André Visage to discuss the company, chocolate and the innovative designs representing the products.

happened quickly. We started ­ developing the recipes and packaging and then found our first factory in Sel­ tjarnarnes in August 2013 to produce the chocolate. The first chocolate bar we sold was in November 2013.

Do the four of you work well together?

We have worked together on this ­ project from the beginning, and it has been a great partnership. All decisions are ­ discussed from the beginning and agreed upon, and we plan to see it continue that way.

When was Omnom Chocolate founded?

It was new territory for all of us. ­ Kjartan started experimenting with chocolate at home late in 2012, and from there, things 50 | R E Y K J AV Í K

From where did the name of the company come?

It was Kjartan’s idea, and it comes from the

sound that Cookie Monster makes or what you say when you taste something extremely good. We liked it, and Omnom was born.

What animals are used in the designs?

Where did the designs for the chocolate bars come from?

I did a lot of research on packaging, and we aimed to do something completely different from what’s on the market. I envisioned the packaging as playful, colourful and somewhat childlike, but with a functional design in mind. It started with patterns and colours, and the idea came up to include animals into the design, and we decided to go with that. We ­ customized foil and bar moulds to follow through with the design from purchase to savouring. We want the SUMMER 2016

The animals we created and drew were inspired by living and travelling in Iceland and South Africa. The wolf character evolved from a drawing I made into a print to cover my bathroom window on our farmhouse in South ­ Africa in 2012. The farmhouse is fittingly called Wolftrap. I was living there when Kjartan first summoned me to be part of Omnom. The initial logo was starcrossed narwhals but through reiteration and discussion, we landed on the wolf head logo for ­ Omnom Chocolate. From there it just felt natural to assign the rest of the SUMMER 2016

animals to each type of chocolate and to build a family of Omnom characters. Our current family of 14 animals includes a wolf, an owl, a shark, a polar bear, a sheep, bats and a bull, to name a few. Creating the illustrations from a sketch to seeing it on the product makes each addition to the family very rewarding.

Is it a challenge to design new animals as you launch more products?

It’s been sort of a blessing and a curse. I decided to keep to the style as we add new members of the family to allow consistency in the branding. ­Finding ­animal candidates is the fun part ­ because we make the rules, and sometimes there are no rules.

We have single origin bars like ­Madagascar 66% and Tanzania 70%, milk bars like Milk of Madagascar 45%, white bars and flavoured bars. A favorite is ­ Lakkris + Sea Salt, which isn’t very surprising. Icelanders love licorice, and you find it in many sweets here. The Madagascar and Tanzania bars have very­ ­distinct fruity flavours, which are translated in the dark and milk versions. We also have the Coffee + Milk, where we add coffee beans instead of cocoa nibs, resulting in a surprising chocolate-and-coffee fix.

How has the response been to the chocolate?

It’s been really positive. We sell locally in a number of shops in Iceland, at Duty Free at Keflavik International Airport and in flight on Wow and Icelandair. Internationally, we sell to Canada, the United States, Scandinavia, Europe and Asia. It seems like our product has become some form of a souvenir or gift, which allows us to enter the chocolate market itself around the world without us having to force it with aggressive advertising. Social media plays a big part in the way we market Omnom chocolate.

Omnom is moving to a new space. Can you tell us about that?

Soon we will relocate to our new factory in the Grandi area of Reykjavík, which we are very excited about! The space includes our flagship store and ­offices at the back, so we will all be together in one space, which will add a whole new dimension to our team work. We will offer tours of the factory to give ­ visitors a chance to learn about the whole bean-to-bar chocolate-making process. We are also planning to open a second store downtown. It’s an exciting time for us.

We are looking forward to a lot of experimentation in the new test kitchen at Omnom HQ.

From Reyðarfjörður to the Silver Screen

‘I got into costumes when I started working on the third season of Game of Thrones when they filmed in Iceland’

Sylvía Dögg Halldórsdóttir, also known as ­Sylvía Lovetank, has had some of the ­ coolest creative jobs around. As a freelance artist/costume breakdown artist, she has worked in the costume ­department for television shows like ‘Fortitude’ and ‘Game of Thrones’.

Breakdown artists add crucial details to costumes so characters can fight another day in ­ Westeros and Essos. Sylvía, who grew up in the remote town of Reyðarfjörður in a scenic stretch of east Iceland, is a trained artist with a studio in downtown Reykja­ vík. Reykjavík Fashion & Design met up with Sylvía to learn more about her path from Reyðarfjörður to the exciting world of ‘Game of Thrones’.

How did you get started in the art world?

I grew up in a very small town in the east called Reyðarfjörður which at the time had a population of just 700 people. At the age of 13, I asked my mother to send me to boarding school. I wanted more. I wanted to create and see the world and meet people.

That really drove me as a child. I was always creative, and I needed an outlet.

Did you end up leaving Iceland for a while?

I left home at the age of 15 and moved to Reykjavík. I moved to Rotterdam, ­ Holland for four years where I got my bachelor’s degree at Willem de ­ Kooning’s Fine Arts department. After graduation, I moved to London. When I left home, my mother said, ‘You’re never going to move back to Iceland. You’re going to travel the world’. I lived in London for just over a year, and I became pregnant with my son. I came back to Iceland because it’s such a great place to raise ­children and it can be important to be 54 | R E Y K J AV Í K

close to family. But I loved my years abroad.

Now I’m based in Reykjavík and I travel a lot for work, so I get the best of both worlds.

When did you get into costume work?

I got into costumes when I started working on the third season of ‘Game of Thrones’ when they filmed in Iceland. I worked in the breakdown department, and they needed an artist to work on applying paint to the costumes. They wanted someone who was good with a paintbrush. I got the call for the job when I was on my way to Boston.

I thought about it and thought, ‘Fuck it, you’re doing this’.

What’s it like working on ‘Game of Thrones’?

I was invited back to work on the fourth season in Ireland. I fell in love with the job and the crew. It’s long hours and hard work, as on many costume jobs, but it’s worth it. Working in television and movies is amazing. On ‘Game of Thrones’, I met so many amazing, talented people from around the world, and it was a very exciting project to work on. I was fortunate to get to learn from the best.

Which other productions have you worked on?

I have been very privileged work-wise and I’ve gotten to partake in many big, exciting productions, especially given my short time in the industry. My first job was on the most popular TV show in the world, and only good things have followed. I am currently working on the second season of Sky’s drama ‘Fortitude’. I did the costume breakdown on their first season. It is filmed on the east coast of Iceland, in my hometown of Reyðarfjörður, and it has been fantastic.

Since it is being filmed where I grew up, I stay at my parent’s house, and it is so cosy to stay there and go to work. It’s a great show, and its crew members are all stars.

Do you find time to paint?

At first I found it really difficult to ­ juggle being a mom and having time and energy to create. It took me a couple of years to work that out, and I found that it’s better to do something than nothing. Even though I

don’t have the time to do everything I want to do, I decided to stop putting pressure on myself. After ‘Game of Thrones’ I started working as a self-employed person because it suited me perfectly. The truth is that when I come from doing an intense job, it takes time to catch up and find my center.

Do you enjoy working in film and television?

Does Iceland inspire you as an artist?

are a part of a big team where everyone has a role, and as one we all work together to make something beautiful. It’s so very different than being alone in the studio with your canvas. It also gives me the freedom to not have to worry about making paintings that will sell rapidly to make ends meet.

Working on TV and film pays the bills, and painting happens when I want it to, without added pressure.

What’s it like to be a creative person in Reykjavík?

In Holland, it was easy to meet people, locals and people from just about every part of the world. I made so many great friends there. In London, for me it got a little tiring, the rushing and the commute. I didn’t love London, but I have so many great friends living there. I found it to be a bit soul crushing.

In Reykjavík, it’s different. It’s a small place, and people know each other or know of each other. Because of that, there is a lot of support in the community. It was a little different for me, because I didn’t grow up in Reykja­vík. I moved here as a young adult, so I wasn’t part of the ‘inner circle’. I wouldn’t say I felt like an outsider, but it took time to get to know people. But it’s a wonderful place to create, get inspiration, and have your work seen.

Your studio is so cool. How long have you been in this space?

When I came back to Iceland, I had to redefine myself as a mother and as an artist.

I decided I should make an ­ exhibition and rented a space in downtown Reykjavík with a friend of mine. We opened what I think was the first window gallery in Reykjavík, called Black Window. There we had our art on display 24/7, and from there on I got my game back. Eventually, I got this ­ studio on Laugavegur, and it’s a great space. I share it with other artists, and there’s always a good energy and ­ people selling and working on interesting things. It’s fabulous.

What’s next for you?

Exciting times are ahead, and my ­ projects and responsibilities keep growing. This summer I get to do my first feature film as a costume designer. It’s an Icelandic film called ‘The Swan’, directed by a very talented up-and-coming director. It’s been a fabulous journey, and I am very thankful and excited about what’s coming my way.

Ever since Sigurjón Pálsson soared into the design scene, he has found much acclaim for his minimalistic, yet complex products. Lately, he’s been causing quite a stir with his ‘Shore Birds’ project, the result of a collaboration with design company Normann Copenhagen. Entranced by his collection, we sat down with the man behind the birds, to pick his brain about everything from the design process to writing crime novels, even touching on the oft-twisting design of life itself.

How have you come up with so many ideas for designs in so short a time?

My ideas tend to be the result of a process rather than a sudden epiphany. You could compare it with the river: the process starts with small streams in my mind, which originate from my unconscious and even from my childhood. Gradually, more and more streams are added, and eventually come together to form a kind of lake. When 60 | R E Y K J AV Í K

the time is right, this lake turns into a flood, which ends with a finished design.

‘Shore Birds’ is a good example of this process. Birds have been dear to me since childhood – from an early age, my grandfather taught me to identify different species and gave me beautiful books about birds. The opportunity to incorporate birds into my design came more than 50 years later. After knee surgery, I had plenty of time to think and saw an opportunity in the surge of tourism in Iceland. I wanted to design high-quality products that would make Icelandic nature appealing to tourists.

Icelandic birds were, of course, a major part of carrying out this goal.

Today, these birds are sold under the Normann Copenhagen brand. How did this collaboration come about?

While browsing the internet one evening, I saw that Normann Copenhagen was considering up to ten ideas a day from

At 8:00 a.m. the next day, Poul Madsen, the owner and CEO of Normann Copenhagen, reached out to me to see if there was a platform for collaboration. Since then, I´ve been fortunate enough to enjoy a close, fruitful and co-operative relationship with them.

You’ve been incorporating many species of birds into your work, including one of the most famous birds in Iceland, the puffin. How have these designs been received?

I have continued with the original concept of products inspired by Icelandic nature and fauna. I showed ‘Puffin’ in Reykjavik’s DesignMarch in spring of 2014, and that led to co-operation with the Icelandic design house Epal. The puffin has been really well received despite a lack of any marketing or advertising. We are also looking forward to unveiling my next design in our cooperation, a whale, this spring.

Is it appropriate to ask about your aesthetic?

You could say that generally I´m attracted to simplicity, to simple things that serve their purpose when they are expected to. It´s this simplicity I seek to attain in my design, and I avoid anything that does not have to be there.

I use the pencil excessively at the first stages of the sketching process, but the eraser is the last tool I turn to. Modest, shy things that do not shout at you from where they stand, but that serve their purpose when needed, appeal to me. One of my favourite quotes about SUMMER 2016

design says it best: ‘No matter what things you study, you will always find that those which are good and useful are also graced with beauty.’ Those words were written in 1528 by Baldassare Castiglione in his ‘Book of the Courtier’, and they have stood the test of time. The quote fits well with my aesthetic.

Can you tell us more about your crimewriting career?

I have written two crime novels. ‘Intrigue’, which received the ­ ‘Blóð­ dropinn’ award in 2012 and was shortlisted for the Glass Key, a Scandinavian literature awards, the following year.

My other novel, ‘Deceit’, was published a year later, and I also have a half-finished manuscript somewhere. First and foremost, I see myself as a designer who also enjoys writing. I’ve dabbled in poetry too – haikus, mainly – but these stay in my drawer. As a minimalistic person, the haiku, this concise form of old Japanese poetry, especially appeals to me.

It’s clear that simplicity is a characteristic of your design. Would you say that it’s also dominant in other areas of your life?

My impulse for simplicity compels me to

make my designs as simple and minimalistic as I can. This impulse does not end there.

I think it influences the rest of my life in various ways. I strive to avoid any unnecessary complications, if possible, and try to seek out the most practical way of doing things. ‘Keep it simple, stupid!’ could be my motto. As much as I like being with my wife and my family, I also enjoy working alone in our summerhouse – I can easily forget myself there, for days at a time.

Why is design important?

Design is as important as a good friend.

You call someone a friend when you feel comfortable and safe around them. There are no surprises in the relationship and it makes you feel relaxed and secure. Good design tends to follow you through life, becoming familiar and dear to you, and sometimes even inseparable from you. ‘I became a goldsmith so I could capture beauty’

Ingi - the man behind SIGN jewelry - is one of the most creative individuals we know.

Reykjavík Fashion & Design asked him a few questions, about the design, where he gets inspiration from and what’s next for SIGN. ‘You asked me why I decided to become a goldsmith. I have been asked that question many times through the years. I have answered it in many different ways. Today, only one answer feels right: I became a goldsmith so I could capture beauty. All artists have different ­ approaches and different methods to capture beauty. My need for creation has always been focused on precious metals. SIGN is my canvas’.

‘SIGN has many different jewelry lines, many of which reflect the beauty of Icelandic nature. The people of Iceland are proud of their nature, and they appreciate art that displays the beauty of their homeland such as jewelry from SIGN. Icelandic nature has also a loyal fan base consisting of visitors to Iceland. These travelers are impressed by 64 | R E Y K J AV Í K

the Icelandic surroundings, and they want to take a piece back with them when they leave.

‘SIGN’s workshop is located by the harbor of Hafnarfjörður. People who pass by our window will see a lot of flames, metal and shining stones. When they come in, an employee will greet them and introduce them to SIGN and its jewelry. It is worth­ mentioning that SIGN also takes on projects that involve custom-made jewelry for customers. Today, SIGN´s jewelry is sold in 40 stores located in Iceland, abroad (e.g. in New York and ­Sardinia) and up in the sky where the airline Ice­landair is busy selling SIGN´s shiny stones and silver surrounded by the clouds. We owe our success to our customers, who always seem to see the beauty of SIGN’.

‘It is difficult to say what characterises SIGN’s desings. The jewelry lines are all

diverse in many ways, just like Iceland, my favorite muse. But even though there are many sides to SIGN’s designs, I like to think there is an overall impression by SIGN as a whole. This impression is not unlike the impression I have of Iceland. It stands for gracefulness, creativity, beauty, elegance and audacity. Those words are relevant to SIGN´s designs’.

‘The future of SIGN is exciting. We are always creating new jewelry lines for women and men. My inspiration, which is mainly based on Icelandic nature and symbolism, is continually changing.We always enjoy making our customers happy. Those reactions is also my muse, and I plan to stir up those reactions for as long as I can’.

BIOEFFECT is a unique Icelandic scientific skincarebrand developed by ORF Genetics. The key ingredient within BIOEFFECT products is EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), which ORF has been able to manufacture within a plant based system, specifically the barley plant. Moroever, ORF is the only company in the world currently able to do so.

EGF is a Nobel Prize-winning discovery (1986). The cellular activators in the products are a normal part of the communication network within the skin, and as such, they help to speed up the renewal process and restore the skin’s natural radiance. The products are currently sold in more than 1000 stores in 30 countries.

BIOEFFECT is a five-year-old Icelandic skincare brand fully owned by a biotech company ORF Genetics. Fifteen years ago, ORF developed a unique technology known as ORFEUS which, enables the company to produce growth factors from a plant based system. ORF Genetics is a pioneer in the manufacturing of growth factors and other recombinant proteins in plants.

‘The importance of growth factors has been known for quite some time’ the CEO, Kristinn Grétarsson, says. Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi-Montalcini were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1986 for their discoveries of growth factors. „It was principally for the discovery of the role of EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), which is one of the principal growth factors.’

It’s a unique company in the world in terms of what we are able to do. We decided six years ago to use principally one of those growth factors, EGF, in a skincare product because it is known for efficacy and potential when it comes to the skin.’

factors is either to grow them in a bacterial system like E. coli or within a human tissue system like placenta or foreskin.

‘Either is ethically questionable, and then there’s also the issue of purity. If you use an E. coli system or human tissue system, the growth factor is surrounded by endotoxins, which are unwanted chemicals and substances that may have a negative impact on how the growth factor performs, either as an ingredient in a skincare product or as an ingredient in stem cell technology or regenerative medicine. The world has actually been looking for a cleaner, better-performing growth factor, and this is why the company-, ORF Genetics-, was founded: to produce a cleaner and better-performing growth factor.‘ BIOEFFECT is a brand developed by ORF Genetics, which sells growth factors under the brand name ISOKINE in about 140 countries. ‘We currently market 25 growth factors that we sell in these countries and this is why we are able to bring to the market a skincare product that contains this very valuable and effective protein, EGF.‘ The barley plant is the plant that they chose. ‘We chose it for several reasons. It was indeed a challenge to work with it but it is a very good and effective plant in producing

Kristinn says the EGF is in a way like a signal conductor or cellular activator. ‘It activates the cells to reproduce themselves quicker.

EGF is something that is natural to our skin. When we are babies, infants, we have an abundance of EGF in our bodies. It’s a natural thing that we produce ourselves. It is abundant in breast milk and saliva and if you think about an infant, a newborn baby, it grows about one centimetre a week in the first weeks of its life. The skin has to grow with it and the Epidermal Growth Factor plays an instrumental role in this process.

When we reach maturity at the age of 20/22, our body slows down production of these growth factors quite dramatically; our skin becomes thinner every year by approximately 1%. What is happening when your skin is becoming thinner is that your skin is actually losing it’s valuable collagen structure.

This is ­ because the cells have become less active - they are not building or maintaining as much collagen as they used to. And this is ageing. So when we reach the age of 30 plus, we start to notice our first fine lines and wrinkles around our eyes. Some of these are due to the fact that we smile a lot, and of course the sun has a big impact on it too, but our genes also play a big role. ‘BIOEFFECT has achieved 15 international awards in terms of the best product’

When a woman comes to the period in her life when she faces meno­ pause, she can expect to lose about 30% of her skin thickness within the period of five years. For some women this is a period when they may notice more aggressively the signs of ageing.

It’s principally because of the thinning of the skin.‘ Half-a-face study

Martina Kerscher, Professor of Cosmetic Science at the University­ of Ham­ burg, conducted a unique half-a-face efficacy study of the BIO­EFFECT EGF SERUM. ‘She conducted a study where 30 women, for two months, applied placebo on one half of their face and BIOEFFECT on the other. The study was also randomized and double which had not been done before using a skincare product. ‘This is the first skincare product study of this type and design that we know of.’ She then used biomarkers as a way of measuring outcome in terms of skin thickness and density.

To put this into perspective, you lose 1% of your skin after the age of 20-25. Then if the EGF is in fact stimulating the cells to reproduce faster, then a plausible outcome of this study would mean that the skin would become thicker. And this is exactly what happened.

After two months of use in Kerscher’s study, the skin on the side of the face that was exposed to the EGF, increased in thickness by 60%. Actually, Kerscher could see on which side the women had been using BIOEFFECT versus the placebo. And here is the truly most remarkable thing, the differences were not just visible, but also measurable.

The study was double blinded, meaning that Kerscher did not know what was in bottle A and what was in bottle B. Neither did the women who were using the product. And when the women were asked to do a self-assessment statement, they overwhelmingly noticed a dramatic improvement on the side of the face which contained the EGF.‘ Kristinn says that the study showed without a doubt that BIOEFFECT is a product that has a very positive impact on the skin.

It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles but also has an impact on glow, texture and every other component of the skin.

Last year, one of the biggest publications in France, Le Figaro, published it’s beauty guide under the name Madame Figaro Beauty Guide. This is a beauty guide that the industry looks forward to and says, ‘this is what we think is the best and the most significant the world has to offer in terms of beauty‘. Every year when this comes out, global executives of the beauty companies pay attention; this is critical ranking. This is the list. The guide.

If you go through the products that are listed, you have, for example, Opium by Yves Saint Laurent at number 23; that is a perfume that came out in 1977 and has sold millions of bottles. Nivea Cream is at number 13, Eau de Cologne Impériale by Guerlain is at number 10, the Rouge Dior lipstick is in the ninth place and Chanel No. 5 is at number seven. And then you have the Icelandic brand BIOEFFECT at number five. This, according to the French experts of one of the biggest newspapers in France is listed as the fifth best beauty product. It’s an amazing achievement.

Colette, Paris

Kristinn also mentions Colette, Paris’s cult store. ‘Colette is probably the most influential concept store in the world today.

It is a store where people from all over the world come on a regular basis to see what is new and what is noteworthy, as deemed by the people of Colette. They typically bring in a product and showcase it maybe for two to four months. And then they bring in new things to show you. I’ve been in Colette six times and the store is always different.

Colette contacted us five years ago and said they would like to sell our product. It’s such a big honour to be chosen by Colette.

We then expected a phone call to tell us that our product was no longer being sold, but that phone call never came. Five years later, our product is still in Colette. This is really extraordinary. I think this is another success story that is quite remarkable. Our product is not just there - it is the best selling product in the beauty department. That is an amazing achievement.

One of the interesting things abour our success in Colette is that 70% of people who receive a small sample come back and buy the product. This is something that the industry does not see; this is really something special. This is why we are successful. It is

because our product works. The product actually delivers what the consumer is expecting.‘ The goals

BIOEFFECT is a young company in the beauty industry. ‘We are going to strengthen our product portfolio, but we want to be careful and consistent when we bring new products to the market; not just because we want to, or have, the opportunity to introduce a new product, but to introduce a product that serves a purpose. This is always our guiding light. We set ourselves very high standards in everything we do. This is part of our DNA. It took us, for example, two years to develop the BIOEFFECT Day Serum, which we introduced last year. We make every effort to ensure that we test our products to ensure that the consumer gets a product that will meet his or her expectations.‘ Asked about possible negative affects of the product, Kristinn says that EGF is one of the best studied ingredients in recent years. ‘There have been no associated negative effects when using our products, nor with any other products that contain EGF.

Beauty and skincare products have always fascinated Hildur Ársæls. When she was a little girl, her favourite game to play involved mixing her mother’s perfumes to make her own and then selling them in an imaginary store. She also had some signature body lotions, along with her mother’s office supplies, to sell to her friends. Hildur even learned to do her make-up and speak foreign languages when she was eight or nine years old (at least that was what her father told her). He later told her that it was a language that no one else spoke except for Hildur. It’s clear that Hildur dreamt about working in the beauty industry and travelling the world living in different countries for quite some time, and she has made that dream a reality. Reykja­ vík Fashion & Design recently spoke with Hildur about her exciting career.

How did you get involved in the beauty world?

It was always my aim to work in the beauty world, so as soon as I was done with college I went to make-up school in Iceland. After that, I went to an esthetician school in Denmark before moving to LA to study. After getting my head around the beauty industry, I knew I had to get some more mainstream business and marketing experience to get work in the corporate part of the industry.

What was it like studying abroad?

My experience in LA was amazing. I’m so glad I chose to study there because the beauty industry in California was/is booming. So 72 | R E Y K J AV Í K

‘Today the beauty industry in Iceland is blooming and there are some brands starting to many new niche beauty brands pop up all the time, and there were so many networking opportunities that I would not want to have missed for the world. I did a lot of internships while I was there in marketing and product development until I got my oneyear working visa.

Now when I look back, I am positive that this helped me further my career. People expect me to tell them about the awesome parties in LA, the glamour and tanning at the beach. But I did almost none of that. I think I can count on one hand the number of times I went to the beach and the big parties in Hollywood I went to. During my three years there, I studied and worked non-stop. Thankfully, I’ve had some business trips to LA since then where I was able to mix business with a little bit of pleasure.

I did an exchange program at a business school in Paris, and I was planning on living and working there after I was done. But at the end of my studies, I was contacted

At OH, you are much more hands-on with everything from product development to marketing and even the digital presence. At L’Orèal, the company is so big you usually just focus on one thing.

What is it like working for companies­ like L’Oréal and Ole Henrikson?

Is the beauty industry a difficult industry to break into?

I think it is wonderful, although for me they were two completely different experiences.

Those two companies are very different.

What do you think of the beauty scene in Iceland? It seems like there are more products being developed than ever.

I know! And it has been so amazing to see it develop that fast. When I moved away from Iceland nine years ago, there were only a few brands, and almost none had international recognition. But today, the beauty industry in Iceland is blooming, and there are some brands starting to show international potential. But the recognition is still missing, especially from the international side. So

they need to start taking their marketing to the next level since the potential is there, but the opportunity will not come without hard work.

What are you currently working on?

Currently I’m on maternity leave. I just had my first child, a beautiful boy, at the beginning of 2016. But I am having a hard time not checking up on the news and trends, so my new iPad has come in handy. With all this time on my hands, I just recently became an ‘instamom’ where I share my passion for beauty, interior and my baby boy under the name Bricks & Blushes.

What are your favorite beauty/skincare products from Iceland?

My favorite would have to be the products from Bioeffect. Taramar is another very interesting brand, but I haven’t tried their products yet.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting out in the beauty industry?

Have self-confidence and set goals for yourself on what you want to accomplish. Then start working hard and network your ass off.

Start with a fresh face and add for example an oily primer to get that dewy look without too much shine. It’s all about controlling your dew.

To get the natural looking shine go for a creamy highlighter before you add the ­foundation and add it to places that you want to stand out a little, like your c­ heekbones.

For summer you’re going to want to protect your skin with foundation that has some sunblock. Even though you don’t always have direct sun exposure in Iceland during the summer you have the UV radiation hanging over your head so you’re going to want to protect your skin and eyes, just to be on the safe side. So most definitely go for a lightweight foundation with SPF in it and maybe keep sunnies handy.

Conceal the places the foundation does not cover with some weightless concealer that provides buildable coverage with a natural finish. That way you can hide dark circles or blemishes without heavy coverage.

Now for some splash of color. With that controlled dewy face, you can add one color over the entire eye lid, make a statement by underlining the eye with a pencil or draw some color in the socket of your eye which is an interesting twist.

The big 90´s comeback shows the voluptuous glossy pout. The modern babydoll gloss lip looks both flattering and feminine.

For the finishing touch, since summer is around the corner you’re allowed to bring out your bronzer. Think about where the sun would naturally fall on your face and brush lightly with a big rounded brush to get that sun kissed tint.

On January 10, 2016, the world lost one of the most unique and important voices in modern music. He was an icon, an inspiration to thousands of musicians and provided the soundtrack to the lives of a legion of Bowie fans. His lyrics, music, style and humility left a deep imprint and many are coming to grips with a post-Bowie world.

Lenses followed David Bowie during his 50+-year career, clicking from the era of Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, to his final Blackstar year. Bowie was captured in thousands of images and always delivered something unique, whether provocative, powerful or vulnerable. Bowie was perhaps the most photo­genic rock star who ever lived, with his signature eyes, the way he moved, the clothes he wore, and how pushed the boundaries. His artistry had no limits.

British photographer Gavin Evans, who lives in Berlin, shot some of the most memorable David Bowie photos. Gavin’s style challenges conventions and his por86 | R E Y K J AV Í K

picture’ traits have been featured in newspapers and magazines around the world, in addition to books and exhibitions.

Gavin brought his exhibition to Harpa on March 18 for a five-month run. Reykjavík Fashion & Design sat down with Gavin before the exhibition opened.

What was it like working with David Bowie?

It was an hour-long session and it was a good session. There was euphoria of panic and anticipation around me that David was coming to the studio. We didn’t know what to expect. But, when he came in, he was down to earth. The Starman was down to earth. We spoke and I asked him if he had SUMMER 2016

any ideas and he had these sapphire contact lenses.

The lenses were so unexpected. What did you think when he brought them out?

Is it true that Bowie chose one of your photos for his office?

That’s the one question everyone loves to ask. He was dressed so casually, and he usually presents a disguise during a session. The lenses were part of the disguise. It was fun.

The whole shoot was mildly chaotic, loud and he pushed some serious buttons.

Yes, he wanted one image for his office in Manhattan. And the one he picked was a little surprising. It was the antithesis of uber-celebrity. He was human and raw and it turned out to be his favourite picture.

Did Bowie do anything else surprising during the shoot?

At the end of the shoot, he took a tray that was lying around and he put it behind his head. I stopped and said, ‘We aren’t finished.’ I wasn’t going to let him leave just yet. He struck this Saint Peter’s pose with the tray behind his head and a stand up his shirt. The photo has taken on a different resonance since he died.

What was Bowie’s mood like during the shoot?

On the day, he was super positive and very gregarious. As we went along, I had to temper that down a bit to get where we were going. But, there was very little performance from David. He was very down to earth and

Your work appears on the back cover of the ‘David Bowie Is’ book, which is a companion book for the David Bowie exhibition in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Can you tell us about that?

Yes, Bowie requested the image of him appearing lost and vulnerable to run on the cover and final page of the V&A’s ‘Bowie Is’ exhibition book. It was an honour to have my work displayed next to Duffy’s iconic image. My image for V&A is the same photograph that hung in his Manhattan office.

Why did you decide to bring this collection to Reykjavík?

we’re thrilled to exhibit here. The exhibition will run simultaneously throughout March at three separate venues in three different countries: The Institute Berlin, Harpa and the A-Galerie Paris, as part of a major Bowie group exhibition.

Which other artists have you worked with?

There is a roll call of luminaries including Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Björk, Daniel Craig, Gary Oldman, Juliette Binoche, Dusty Springfield, Morrissey, Ozzy Osbourne, and Terry Gilliam to name a few.

Your portrait of Brian Wilson has stayed with me for years. It’s a haunting, yet beautiful image. Can you tell us about the story behind that photo?

I was 23 years old and I didn’t know who Brian Wilson was. I had heard of the Beach Boys, but I wasn’t that familiar with him.

The other journalists who were there were in awe. So, I set up all my equipment, and then Brian shuffled in. He didn’t speak. I took two frames of him staring into the camera and was about to suggest something else when his assistant said, ‘That’s it, Gavin.’

or controversial was said. Then they wanted two Polaroids. One for me and one for them. So I stood next to Brian, and they took the first one, and in my head I’m thinking, ‘The second shot’s mine,’ so I raised one eyebrow ironically and they took the photo.

Just in case they thought I was disrespecting the great man, I grabbed the Polaroid before it had time to develop and shot out. In the lift I looked down and there I was, one raised eyebrow, and that was what Brian was doing – exactly mirroring me. He couldn’t have seen me doing it – it was really strange experience.

Haust Restaurant is inspired by the ­magnifi­cent nature of Iceland which means that the menu is always based on the harvest of each season. ‘We define Haust as a fine dining restaurant,’ says head chef Jónas ­ Oddur Björnsson, who has cooked at Michelin­ restaurants for many years in France and Scandinavia. He has also been recruited as a personal chef for luxury tours around the world and for major celebrities.

‘We focus on quality and fresh ingredients. We use as much Icelandic ­ produce as possible such as fish, lamb and foal.’ The menu changes according to each season, and next fall, you’ll be able to order Icelandic reindeer.

It’s worth mentioning that ‘haust‘ actually means ‘autumn‘, which is harvest time.

With that in mind, the menu at Haust is always based on the harvest of each season.

‘I love pleasing the taste palate,’ Jónas says.

‘Haust is a fine dining ­ restaurant, like already mentioned, but at the same time, we pay attention to the serving sizes. We want our guests to get enough on their plates. We focus on simplicity, quality and creativity when it comes to the dishes. Our food tells a story, so you will experience the Haust ­concept when you try our menu.’

In terms of creativity, it’s worth mentioning Jónas’ latest experiment. The Blacklick is garlic cooked for 30 days straight over low temperatures. Jónas has put a lot of effort in to this experiment, making it a truly distinguished, delightful ingredient which is used in Haust’s sauces and creams or served as a part of a meal. Chef Jónas’ goal is for Haust Restaurant to be known for its own ‘taste‘ since the restaurant has already made headlines for its creative style and menu.

Icelanders are known for a few things, such as beautiful nature, rapid changes in the weather and high-quality fish.

At Víkin Restaurant, you can be sure you'll get fresh fish since Snorri, the head chef, goes to the local fishmonger every morning to pick out the freshest fish of the day. He then prepares it for hungry lunch guests. Reykja­vík Fashion & Design was invited to Víkin on a sunny Tuesday, and we got to try out the fish of the day, which costs only 2490 ISK. When we got there, Snorri greeted us with a big smile, and we found a seat by the window. The view is stunning at Víkin, and the sun was shining. There is just something so special about sitting by the harbor and eating fresh fish caught just a few hours earlier.

While we sat and chatted about the next issue of Reykjavík Fashion & Design, we feasted on a wonderful cod covered in a citrusy hollandaise sauce, with barley and root vegetables on the side. The food and ice cold water went down easy, and we all enjoyed the meal. Next time we visit Víkin, we will do so on a Wednesday, since that's when Snorri gets fresh mussels from the market.

We can just picture, us sitting out on the patio with a glass of white wine and fresh mussels. Yum!!

How do you stay mentally fit?

Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir has lived that motto to the fullest. Her passions in life are nature, outdoor adventures and challenges such as scaling the heights of Mount Everest and conquering the punishing conditions of the South Pole. On­ January 17th 2013, Vilborg became the first­ Ice­lander to ski solo from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole, – traveling more than 1140 km to reach the South Pole; exactly 101 years after Robert Scott and his team did it in 1912. Reykjavik Fashion & Design recently sat down with ­ Vilborg to discuss her determination, courage and positivity when facing difficult challenges as an adventurer.

Did you set out on a climb?

I was reading some brochure about a climbing trip. It was my first hike ever, and a friend signed up with me. I didn’t have anything, any gear. So we went to Reykjavik to buy hiking boots, and my main goal was to look good for the hike [laughs]. I bought the coolest looking boots in the shop that were too small and not even waterproof. I had never been mountain climbing and, I didn’t know what I needed. It was August, but there was a period during the climb where it was like a blizzard. But, that first climb really boosted my self-esteem. It was like my first personal victory.

Did you love the outdoors as a child?

My family has a cabin in the West Fjords, and I spent a lot of time there growing up.

But I wouldn’t say I was an adventurous kid. That came later. When I was 22, I was working in a hotel in the countryside.

Every day I would look out a window by the reception area, and I could see over to Skaftafell and the mountains. I decided then, that I wanted to climb.

Did being outdoors become a serious interest for you then?

I signed up for the search and rescue team and trained for two years. It was the first time I graduated from something, and during that training, I found that I have a talent for something. That was a first for me.

I was a bit of a rebel when I was younger, and I got kicked out of school three times before I was 18. Climbing changed a lot of things in me and it became a big interest.

When did you decide you wanted to ski the South Pole?

While training for the search and rescue team, I read a book about a South Pole expedition, and I knew that I wanted to go.

How do you prepare for an expedition like that?

There’s the physical part of training, but becoming mentally ready is just as important, especially when you are going to go alone. I read a lot of books and blogs, and I tried to learn from positive experiences and how they behaved during their expeditions. I think it also helps that I have strong personal values and I visualize all my expeditions. I know that I need to be fully ready before I go out. It’s so important to be prepared. I

There were days crossing the South Pole that were really special, and when things were going well, I loved it. But there were days when things were not going well, when I was really cold and tired with wind blowing in my face all day, and I didn´t have anyone to share the experience with, to talk about the burden. That was hard, but I had to continue, and no matter how hard some days were, stopping was not an option for me. On average, I walked 20km a day, but I covered distances from 15km to 30km, depending on the conditions.

Is it expensive to do these expeditions?

Do you fundraise?

When I first started out, I didn’t have a lot of money, but I had to use my own money for my first expedition. I paid about 70% of the costs because nobody knew me or what I was doing. You can’t ask people in Iceland for money when they don’t know if you are going to be serious about the trip. I had to borrow the rest of the money from a bank, and that was good in a way because I didn’t have the option to stop the trip. I had to succeed, or how would I ever pay the money back? But after that I started to fundraise, and then I got sponsorships.

How did Iceland react to your accomplishment?

‘I was heartbroken.

There were people in Nepal that were left with nothing, families of sherpas that were left with nothing’ of people were waiting for me at the airport.

People I didn’t’ even know wanted to show support, and I was so thankful for that. It felt great. Later on in Reykjavik, there was a ceremony at Harpa [Concert Hall], and the president, prime minister and mayor talked about me. It was really surprising. But it was so great that there was so much support and interest in what I did.

What was it like climbing Mount Everest?

I read Into Thin Air [the book about the Everest tragedy in 1997], and I was fascinated by the journey, by the preparation and the nature. I always wanted to go to Nepal. My first climb was in 2014, and unfortunately, the avalanche happened. I was shaken and injured, but I decided to 96 | R E Y K J AV Í K

go back in 2015, and the big earthquake hit. This is something that chases you…it’s something you will never forget. My team lost three sherpas, and I was heartbroken.

When people lose their lives, who cares about a summit? Your goal should never be bigger than other people’s feelings.

What was it like for you when you came home to Iceland after the first Everest attempt?

I was heartbroken. There were people in Nepal who were left with nothing, families of sherpas that were left with nothing. There was the feeling that I really wanted to do something. I came home and I was really injured. I had to heal my body, and I had to face what happened. I had a psychologist who was so great and was on the sidelines for me. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

that I was okay on Facebook shortly after. In 2015, the office told them I was okay after a few hours. It can be hard for families of people who like to do these things. I think it was harder for my family in the beginning but now they are used to what I do. It was probably hardest for them when I was alone in Antarctica.

Would you attempt Everest again?

I love Everest, but the thought of going back is hard. Maybe someday.

What is your life like today? What’s next?

I am working on a book that encourages families to get outside and explore, and it’s about nutrition, fitness and fun experiences.

I also do some inspirational talks, and fundraise for causes, and I’m an ambassador for 66 North.

Why did you decide to return to Everest in 2015?

Do you wear 66 North gear when on expeditions?

I needed to have a new goal. I got back in shape, trained and went back to Nepal, and the big earthquake hit on April 25. I was in Camp 1, and I was lucky to have survived the avalanche. It came very close to the camp.

Base camp was demolished, and we couldn’t get down. We were in shock, stuck, injured, and we couldn’t help the other people. Then there were aftershocks that were so scary.

It was too cloudy for helicopters to land to help the people in base camp. When we eventually got back down, there was nothing left of base camp. People died, and many others were seriously injured.

They are like my home away from home.

66 North has supported me throughout my trips, and I have always worn their gear. I still have all my fingers and toes, so the gear is good [laughs].

What advice would you give a young person who would like to do expeditions?

Your heart is your best compass in life. If you set your mind to do something and your heart is in it, you will succeed.

Happy hour even extends to cocktails, if you can pry yourself away from the multitude of beer options, that is. If you or anyone else need more reasons to visit the bar, it’s worth noting that Bjórgarðurinn has a sausage bar. Yes, that’s right. A sausage bar.

Let’s cut to the chase: Slippbarinn has a really, really good cocktail menu, with a boatload of creative drinks. The ‘Hemingway cocktail’ being just one example. Between 15 and 18, some of these cocktails are even a paltry 1,200 ISK. If you’re not into the fancy drinks, Slippbarinn also has happy hour deals on wine and beer, and a solid selection of both in bottles, glasses, and on tap. Unlike many of the bars on this list, Slippbarinn is on the harbor side of Reykjavík, which means great views and less crowds -- a perfect place to enjoy alcohol and atmosphere alike.

‘Gourmet nouvelle cuisine with exquisite dishes’ is a good way to describe the food they serve at Torfan Lobsterhouse in down­ town Reykjavík.

‘We combine French cuisine with a little bit of a Nordic touch. Our methods are a bit old school so our personal feelings are very attached to the food, and we only use the best ingredients we can get every day,’ one of the owners, Ívar Þórðarson, says. ‘Local ingredients are very good; we get, for example, salad straight from the farmer and fish straight from the market from the smaller boats.’

What about the concept?

‘The French concept is very obvious on the menus, as are the Nordic twists. We take old classic dishes and put them in a new costume with Nordic influences, like pickling, curing and smoking.

The first restaurant in the house was named Torfan, then there was the Lobsterhouse, or Humarhúsið in Icelandic, for about 25 years, and now it has combined into ­Torfa Lobsterhouse as to pay respect to the two prior restau­rants which this one is build on.

The restaurant is famous for the lobster because of the Lobsterhouse. The main lobster dish has not changed for probably 25 years, except for maybe the garnish; the SUMMER 2016

lobster is grilled in garlic butter – Icelandic butter of course – and that’s all you need.

The lobster speaks for it self.’

Diverse menus

‘The water is very clear around the coast, and we buy the fish from small fishermen; they don’t fish in great quantities, and they show respect for the fish.

We always have cod on the menu because that’s one of Iceland’s trademarks.

We also serve Arctic Char; it’s bred in the glacier waters of Eyjafjallajökull, and it is a very firm, good fish. We also have monkfish which is very seasonal; it usually follows the lobster season which is April to September.

We serve of course Icelandic lamb; at the moment, we serve Lamb Prime, which is part of the fillet that has a little bit more fat and therefore a lot more flavour. It is cooked very slowly to break down the fat so it gets very tender.

We are proud of the horse, and we have had horse on the menu for many years.

Horse meat has more flavour than foal, and it is the most tender meat I’ve ever tasted.’

They serve Beef Ternderloin at the restau­ rant, and Ívar says they cook it with the old method of using butter with herbs. ‘It is marinated for at least five days before we serve it so it’s very tender and flavourful.

‘We always have cod on the menu because that’s one of Iceland’s trade marks’ We have two vegetarian courses: Wild Mushroom Risotto and a Jerusalem artichoke Pavé; people are very surprised by the flavours going on there, which we are very proud of.’

They also serve brunch. ‘There we have French classics with Nordic twists so diners can get a hint of Iceland in the French cuisine.’

There is also a lunch menu, set menus and a group menu. They even have a five-course surprise menu; why not try it?

The wines

‘We look for certain characteristics of the grapes that not only give us the correct new dimension but also provide people with another experience.

With the lobster, we recommend Arthur Metz Pinot Gris, a white wine from Alsace in France, or Marqués de Casa Concha Chardonnay from Chile.

With red meat, we recommend Marqués de Casa Concha Merlot or an Italian red wine from Tommasi Ripasso.’

The history

Torfan Lobsterhouse is located in one of Reykjavík’s historical houses which was built in 1838 by the then-head of state, Stefán Gunnlaugsson. It’s located on ­Bernhöfts­ torfa, which comprises an important aspect of the architectural history of the city.

‘Torfa’ means ‘grassy slope,’ and in the other houses on the Bernhöftstorfa – the houses on the hill – there were, for example, a bakery, a peat store and a grain storage.

Time passed, and in 1967, a development plan proposed constructing a city hall on the site, but then a new building conservation movement began and the Torfu­ samtökin – the Torfa Movement – which consisted of hippies, activists and archi­tects, was launched to campaign for the conservation of the buildings.

Some of the buildings were damaged in a fire in 1977, but they have been restored in their original form and in 1979, the government agreed to conserve all the Bernhöftstorfa buildings.

You basically walk into the past when you walk in here. You can hear the floors squeaking and almost see the walls move, which just creates the character of the building that people basically fall in love with.

And we really want to keep it that way. Like I’ve already said, all the furniture is antique so it can keep in touch with the past.

The history of the house is unique.

Some people come here for the history and then grab something to eat.

Up to five families lived in the house in the past, and there are different rooms in the house. The restaurant seats over seventy people, and it has private banquet rooms available for smaller groups. The group menu has already been mentioned, and in the house there are several rooms for groups of 30 people and smaller rooms for eight to

ten people that can be used for meetings or private parties.’

The atmosphere is very special. Ívar mentioned the squeaking floors and walls you almost can see move. You can feel the romantic atmosphere and the cozyness.

They always light candles during the evenings and in the wintertime during lunch to get a cosy atmosphere.

‘We often play slow jazz. The playlist we are playing includes popular new songs played in a slow, acoustic way. People like it a lot because it fits the atmosphere and they recognize the songs. It creates a nice atmosphere for the guests.’

My Reykjavík

What do you love about the city?

My favorite thing about Reykjavík is the city’s vicinity to nature and its calm, friendly atmosphere. I love taking walks around the city center and the old town in the west end to see all the colorful, quaint little houses with adorable cats on every corner. My perfect summer day in Reykjavík includes spending time at the beach, volleyball courts and the Laugardalslaug swimming pool followed by having a relaxing soak in the hot tub to warm up my cold toes.

After a day in the sand, it’s necessary to cool off with a walk around the old harbor eating ice cream from Valdís ice cream shop while watching the sunset. My neighbourhood is right next to the old harbor, which always gives me a nostalgic feeling and reminds me of my childhood hometown, Neskaupstaður in the east of Iceland. The harbor also hosts some of my favourite gourmet food markets and restaurants. It’s a perfect starting point for a night out with its refreshing seafood restaurants and cocktail bars. As a craft-beer enthusiast, I also recommend a visit to Bryggjan Bistro and Brewery or one of the local craft bars before dancing off into the bustling, very bright summer night life.

I'm a big fan of Stúdentakjallarinn located in the Háskóli Íslands – it's such a great spot for a cheap brunch on the weekends. With a belly full of brunch, a stroll downtown is necessary.

A walk through the Hólavallar cemetery is like a quiet trip through the history books – for example, you can see the grave of Bríet Bjarnhéðinsdóttir, a legendary advocate for women's rights.

Next up: a quick coffee stop at Te og kaffi, located in Penninn Eymundsson Austurstræti and a look through the freshest magazines, including RFD! Kolaportið, a wonderful melting pot of weirdness, is just around the corner.

My favourite thing to do in Reykjavík, if the weather allows it, is to walk around. Reykjavík is one of the most inspiring cities in the world, in my opinion. It's not that it's big, or vast, or grand - but it just works. But when I'm not walking around, I'm usually either eating or drinking in Reykjavík. I love drinking whiskey at Dillon, a great metal bar on Laugavegur, since it was one of the first places I ever drank in the city, in 2006. I also like Kaffibarinn because while everything else around it changes, it manages to stay the same. In Reykjavík, the names of bars change a lot; to me Kaffibarinn represents familiarity and friendship. I also love the local swimming pools and hot baths; The Blue Lagoon is one of a kind, but I like the heat, quiet and simplicity of the local baths. In Reykjavík, I feel like a local even though I'm not. The city's warmth makes me feel that way.

I grew up in a small village by the sea, so my all-time favourite thing to do in Reykjavík is to take a walk down to Grandi. It's an up-and-coming area in Reykjavík that only a few years ago was a pretty dirty, unlikable place, but I've always liked it. It's just by the sea, and Valdís, the best ice cream store in town, is there. Next door is also my favourite brunch place, The Coocoo's Nest. It's amazing. Oh, and there is a harbour. After I fill my tummy with bacon and ice cream, I walk down the road towards the sea, where you can sit down and enjoy the silence.

Night time is more about knowing where to go to meet the locals, drink the right beer and so on. Public House is my new favourite spot for food and drinks. Have an Einstök White Ale and check out their scallop ceviche.

Bjórgarðurinn, or ‘The Beer Garden’, sprang into the Icelandic beer scene just last summer, marking Iceland’s first foray of the beer garden variety. Since then, the Beer Garden has attracted a strong customer base, instituted live jazz nights, and expanded its beer and food menus. Though firmly nestled in Reykjavík’s ‘financial district’, the Beer Garden has the warm, relaxed atmosphere of a London pub. As soon as we stepped inside the place, we found our eyes drawn to the barrels on the wall, the giant copper still in the corner, and especially the long line of tap handles at the bar. We soon had to pry our eyes away from these things though, as Loftur, Beer Garden’s bar manager, greeted us with a huge smile and a firm handshake.

He was quite keen to tell us about the place. Nursing a cold beer we were excited to listen.

What is the concept behind Beer Garden?

Our main goal was to create a well-rounded, enjoyable beer and food experience. There are many pubs, microbreweries, and other places where you can grab a beer in Reykjavík. These are all great, but we wanted to offer good food as well. Our concept really centers on combining good 106 | R E Y K J AV Í K

food with good beer.

We try to elevate the sensation of our dishes by pairing them with the perfect beer. We have 22 beers on tap and over 100 varieties in bottles. In my opinion, we have one of the greatest selections of beer from all over the world. We cooperate with many local Icelandic breweries as well.

People have really good things to say about this place, and many have even made a habit of coming in after work.

Yes, we have become very popular with many local businesses and shops in the area. I like to meet all customers personally, to tell them about Beer Garden and its concept and to as listen to their needs. The community here is growing quite rapidly, and our popularity is growing right along with it. We really want people to come here and experience the combination of quality food, beer, and music. On top of all this, we want it to be in a relaxing environment.

What is your favourite combination of beer and food?

I really love pairing the duck salad with the lambic beer Gueuze Girardin. This beer is really heavy. The combo with the duck is quite explosive though. It’s very different.

It ticks all the boxes, and your taste buds definitely have a field day with it.

Situated in west Iceland, Húsafell is a charming village that’s perfect for a getaway from busy Reykjavík. Reykjavík Fashion & Design recently hopped in a car and hit the road, soaking in the scenic trip, exploring the world’s largest man-made ice cave and sampling the exquisite cuisine of Hótel Húsafell’s spectacular restaurant. The writer and photographer did not want to leave!

West Iceland has a lot to offer. The drive from Reykjavík is easy, and there are a lot of stops to make along the way. Before arriving in Húsafell, we visited two thundering waterfalls: Hraun­ fossar (lava falls) and Barnafoss (children’s falls). Hraunfossar comprises a series of water­ falls streaming over 900 meters out of a lava field. The lava flowed from an eruption from a volcano lying under the Langjökull glacier. The falls are beautiful to visit in any season, and rainbows are 108 | R E Y K J AV Í K

frequently seen over the falls on rainy yet sunny days.

Meanwhile, Barnafoss is a stunning waterfall named for the children who disappeared from a nearby farm and drowned in the river. Legend has it that the mother of the disappeared children put a curse on the falls so people could not cross the river. But, don’t let that sad tidbit mislead you.

The rolling waterfall is a beautiful site. The air was crisp with a little mist, and we were the only people near the falls. The sun was starting to peek through and we wanted to linger a little longer, but we had a date with the world’s largest man-made ice cave.

For those looking to explore the actual ice in Iceland, Into The Glacier offers day tours to the world’s largest man-made ice cave. Several years ago, a team of Icelandic entrepreneurs dreamed of travellers not only exploring the surface of Iceland’s glaciers but also going inside one. Four years later, the unique ice cave opened to visitors.

we were the only people near the falls’ Located in the western part of Langjökull, 1,260 meters above sea level, the ice cave stretches deep underground, giving visitors the chance to see ice that’s been forming over decades. It’s even possible to see lines in the ice that contain layers of ash from eruptions. Langjökull, the second-largest glacier on the island, was chosen for our visit due to its proximity to Reykja­ vík. It’s 130 kilometers to Húsafell, the town where the tour begins, from Reykjavík.

A modified super truck picked us up close to Hótel Húsafell for the journey, which left us breathless, as we traversed the glacier to the base camp. We boarded a 20ton customized monster truck designed to cross the soft, sloping snow and rocky ice of the glacier. On clear days, the climb from the barren, icy desert to the ice cave is magnificent. When it’s overcast, there’s still a romanticism to feeling the raw power of the wind and ice sweeping across the glacier.

One of the guides, Gunnar, explained that a unique vehicle is needed to roam the challenging landscape. The vehicle’s tire pressure system can deflate while it’s driving.

The two trucks, named ICE1 and ICE2, were acquired from NATO, where they were originally used as cruise missile launchers.

Departing from the meeting spot, we made our way towards the glacier. The excitement was palpable, visibility was fair, and we were off, soon crossing the vast, shocking white icy desert.

Entering the cave, we were given crampons and the tour began. We were inside of a glacier! Gunnar, the guide, was chock full

of information, explaining that 11% of Iceland is covered in ice from several glaciers and that the environmental impact of the cave is minimal. Only 5,500 cubic meters of ice from a 900-square-kilometer glacier was removed to construct the cave. It’s a bit like taking a drop of water from a bathtub.

Jagged cuts in the ice turn smooth and the colors of the ice change as visitors go deeper, changing from a cloudy white to shocking deep blues. I ran my fingers along the slick, icy walls and read information about Iceland’s receding glaciers on well-lit signs.

I approached a special area in the cave, which is nicknamed the ‘chapel,’ with blocks of LED-lit ice supporting wooden beams.

The space has served as a venue for parties, weddings and concerts. What an incredible place to celebrate a special occasion!

The cave was amazing and we didn’t want to leave, but our time was up. We headed out of the cave and felt the power of Iceland’s weather. While it was pretty mild when we arrived, the wind had picked up, and we ran to the vehicle holding onto our hats, laughing and racing one another like kids.

We cleaned up after the tour, and then we were ready to sample the culinary delights offered at the lovely Hótel Húsafell, a modern new hotel that opened its doors 110 | R E Y K J AV Í K

the summer of 2015. It’s the ideal place for travelers to base themselves in the west. The hotel’s location is unbeatable since it is nestled in a scenic spot with stunning views of the mountain landscape, in close proximity to lava caves and glaciers. The rooms feature comfortable beds, private bathrooms and modern design accents, including wood furnishings and large windows. A pool and hot tubs are located on site, and the in-house restaurant is not to be missed.

At the restaurant, we were seated at a table near a large window that offered a panoramic view of the village. The restaurant itself is chic yet comfortable, with gorgeous wood beams and modern details.

After cocktails, our beautifully arranged entrees arrived, and we couldn’t wait to dig in.

Björn, the photographer, ordered the Lamb Duo, featuring grilled lamb fillet and shoulder of lamb with dates, pan-fried turnips, potatoes, rhubarb and turnip sauce. I opted for the fish of the day, which was salt fish with fresh vegetables and a delicate tomato relish that was divine.

We didn’t think we had room for dessert, but the chef prepared a blueberry skyr-infused ice cream with fresh, local blueberries that was impossible to resist. Hótel Húsafell’s restaurant was the perfect place to end an ideal day trip, with nature, good company and delicious food.
