OPERACIÓN SEGURA Y SUSTENTABLE Pucamarca ha sido reconocida por su desempeño en la prevención de accidentes, ya que fue la ganadora del XVII Concurso Nacional de seguridad Minera en la categoría de minería de cielo abierto. La comisión evaluadora del concurso estuvo formada por representantes de la Dirección General del Ministerio de Energía y Minas, del Organismo Supervisor de la Inversión en Energía y Mineria (Osinergmin), del Capítulo de Ingeniería de Minas del Colegio de Ingenieros del Perú, del Instituto de Seguridad Minera, del Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas del Perú y de la Sociedad Nacional de Minería, Petróleo y Energía (SNMPE). Respecto de la seguridad y el autocuidado en Pucamarca, Roca enfatiza que “reclutamos al personal idóneo para cada una de nuestras posiciones, y tenemos una etapa de inducción y entrenamiento bastante intensa. Además existe un programa de seguridad en gestión minera, donde trabajamos con herramientas pre-

SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE OPERATION Pucamarca has been recognized for its safety record. It was a winner at the XVII National Mine Safety Competition in the open pit mining category. The competition’s committee of judges included representatives from the mining office at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, from the mining and energy investment regulator Osinergmin, the mine engineering chapter of the Peruvian Institute of Engineers, the Mine Safety Institute, the Peruvian Institute of Mine Engineers and the National Association of Mining, Oil and Energy SNMPE. “We recruit the ideal person for each one of our positions and we have a quite intense induction and training stage,” says Roca on the company’s safety and self–care program. “There is also a safety in mine management program, where we employ preventative and reactive tools. The results are there to be seen: three million man hours worked without an accident.” In terms of the company’s environmental policy, the mining company has promoted participative environment monitoring of air, water and soil with communities and local authorities. In addition, internal auditing is carried out, where members from different operating units supervise the processes in order to ensure collaboration between teams and the implementation of best practices. To build relations with its communities, Pucamarca has financed development projects which are managed by local people, including businesses to produce oregano, a pilot program to produce quinoa and projects to build sanitation infrastructure.
