La provincia de Santa Cruz es la última del mapa continental argentino hacia el Sur. Dividida en tres comarcas, sus localidades se recuestan sobre la Cordillera de los Andes, o bien, sobre las aguas del Océano Atlántico. La temporada ideal para visitarla es de septiembre a mayo. La Comarca Austral, ubicada en el sudoeste, contiene el Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. La Comarca Costera abarca la desembocadura del Río Santa Cruz y el Parque Nacional Monte León en el sur y la Ría de Puerto Deseado en el Norte. Mientras tanto, siguiendo por esa región hacia el oeste, se encuentran los Bosques Petrificados de 150 millones de años y finalmente, se llega a la mítica Ruta Nacional 40 y la Comarca Noroeste, más fértil, boscosa y con el lago Buenos Aires, el más grande del país.

Santa Cruz province is the last to the south within the continental territory of Argentina. It is divided in three distinctive geographical areas. The ideal season to visit it is from September to May. The Southern Area, placed to the south-west, harbors the Glaciares National Park. The Coast Area’s expansion comprehends from Santa Cruz River’s mouth and National Park Monte León in the south to Puerto Deseado’s inlet in the north. To the west of this region we find the 150 million years old Petrified Woods and finally the mythical road Nº 40 and the Northwest Area, which is the most fertile, with Buenos Aires lake, the largest in the country.

Estaban en lo cierto el perito Moreno, el comandante Luis Piedrabuena, el naturalista Charles Darwin, el almirante Fitz Roy. Todos descubrieron palmos de la insondable Santa Cruz. Todos, indefectiblemente, quedaron cautivados por una mística particular que se arrastra a nuestros días y a cualquiera que pise estas tierras. Lo decía en sus escritos el periodista Germán Sopeña, quien también amó a los hielos. Hay algo de magnetismo que obliga a permanecer extasiado frente a los glaciares por horas sintiendo el viento frío en los huesos. Hay una fantasía que instala la audacia de enfrentar los escarpados picos del Sur. Hay magia en las estancias solitarias; en las cerezas que brotan como agua de lluvia en Los Antiguos; y en los barcos cargueros que llegan a Puerto Deseado y su tierra de pingüinos. Santa Cruz es Patagonia pura. Y así son sus emociones. Si no, basta con preguntarle a aquellos que aseguran haber lagrimeado frente al Glaciar Perito Moreno y luego, haber decidido, como dice una leyenda, quedarse para siempre en este lugar. Volver, claro, es la añoranza cuando uno se despide. Cuesta irse. Mucho más, olvidar la experiencia. Será, quizás, la extensión que no sabe definir dónde comienza el cielo y dónde termina el horizonte. Decía Sopeña: “Es todo el conjunto a la vez el que hace de la Patagonia una tierra única, con la que sueñan aún quienes no la conocen porque saben que allí se esconde un misterio de la naturaleza”. Bienvenidos, entonces, a la sensación magnífica de la naturaleza dominante y a la belleza cristalina de los hielos. Y que al irse, redunden las ganas de volver.

Francisco Moreno, Commander Luis Piedrabuena, Charles Darwin, admiral Fitz Roy, were right. They all discovered parts of the unfathomable province of Santa Cruz. They were all captivated by the particular mystique that is there to this day for anyone coming to these lands. Germán Sopeña, a journalist who also loved the glaciers more than anybody else, said it in his writings. There is a magnetism that makes you stand in awe watching the glaciers for hours on end, feeling the cold wind in your bones. There is a fantasy that fills you with courage: the urge to climb the jagged peaks of the South. There is magic in the solitary estancias; in the cherries, sprouting like rain drops in Los Antiguos; in the freighters arriving at the seaside Puerto Deseado with its beaches inhabited by penguins and cormorants. Santa Cruz is pure Patagonia. And so are its emotions. If you do not believe it, you can ask those that swear they shed tears gazing at the Perito Moreno Glacier, and then decided, as the legend goes, to stay forever. Of course, all you want when you say goodbye is to return. It is hard to leave. Maybe it is the wide expansion, where you never know where the horizon ends and the sky begins. As Sopeña said: “It is the whole experience that makes Patagonia a unique land and even those who have never been here dream of it, because they know it hides a mystery of nature”. Welcome, then, to the magnificent sensation of the nature dominant and free, and to the crystalline beauty of the ice.

Esta comuna está ubicada en el centro geográfico de la provincia y a orillas de las inmensas aguas del Fagnano: pesca y caminatas, paseos ideales | Por Soledad Aguado |
E
l corazón de la isla de Tierra del Fuego lleva por nombre Tolhuin, una comuna de casas levantadas con listones de madera, surcadas por lupinos, una flor característica de estos sitios australes que florece en primavera y acompaña los días de mucha luminosidad con sus destellos de todos los colores en varas espigadas. Hay un aire diferente en este pueblito comparado con el vigor del viento de Río Grande o la fuerza sureña de Ushuaia, ambos, a una hora y media de distancia hacia el Norte y el Sur respectivamente. Es que está bendecido por un microclima especial que le otorga su posición geográfica sobre el límite de la cordillera –que ya va bajando a la altura de esta provincia– y la llanura, punto donde también se expresa, de Este a Oeste y sin conocer fronteras (ya que se extiende en Chile y la Argentina) el Lago Fagnano de aguas cristalinas y gran cantidad de ríos como alimento. Es precisamente la sensación de horizonte infinito la que se pronuncia cuando uno camina por la orilla pedregosa del lago, donde duermen troncos secos ideales para sentarse a observar los atardeceres que mixturan naranjas con violáceos, rojos con azules.

El impacto de las aguas repercute en actividades: paseos lacustres, salidas de pesca y esas caminatas o bicicleteadas plenas de naturalidad que, si se sigue la cabecera Norte terminarán llevando al sencillo casco urbano. Una vez entre las casas de madera, se descubrirá una adorable capilla abierta a todas horas; una plaza sembrada de ñires, lengas y por supuesto, los infaltables lupinos; y una panadería que es todo un clásico: han pasado por allí infinidad de personajes de la farándula local que se toman una fotografía junto al propietario del local y pasan a for-
mar parte de su galería para la posteridad. Viajeros con planes armados o con la mochila al hombro y sin mucha planificación esperan aquí por los transportes públicos o simplemente, se dan el gusto de un chocolate con churros para amenizar las tardes de pueblo y enterarse de todas las noticias que puedan surgir. Vida de pueblo El descanso es la premisa, se hospede uno cerca del pueblo o lejos de él, como es el caso de la Hostería Kaikén, la más tradicional de Tolhuin.

he heart of the island of Tierra del Fuego is known as Tolhuin, a commune of houses standing on wood beams, surrounded by lupine, a flower characteristic of these Southern places, blooming in spring with the luminosity of varied colors. There is a different air in this village, compared with the vigor of the winds in Rio Grande, or the Southern strength of Ushuaia, both an hour and a half ride away to the North and South, respectively. The place is blessed with a special micro-climate due to its geographical situation, on the limits of the mountain range –that looses height in this zoneand the prairie, where you also find Lake Fagnano, stretching from East to West, crossing from Chile to Argentina, with its crystalline waters and the great number of rivers that flow into it. There is a sensation of infinite horizon when walking on the stony banks of the lake, where you can take a rest on dry tree trunks and watch the nightfall with its mix of orange, violet, red, and blue. diverse activities: tours of the lake, fishing expeditions or walks and bicycle rides in the midst of nature, and following the Northern head of the lake you come to the simple village. Once you are among the wood houses, you will find the adorable chapel, open all day long; a plaza with ñires (Antarctic Beech), lengas (Lenga Beech), and, of course the lupine; and a bakery that is a classic: innumerable members of the local night life take a picture with the owner of the establishment and become an integral part of the show for posterity. Travelers with a plan or with a knapsack and no plan at all wait here for the public transports or simply come to taste the hot chocolate with churros (pastry) to enjoy the afternoon and hear the local news.

Con un cuerpo principal de veinte habitaciones y restaurant, originarios de los años 60 y totalmente remodelados con buen gusto y objetos artesanales, este sitio fue punto de reabastecimiento de combustible y víveres para los que unían el camino entre Ushuaia y Río Grande. Está enclavado sobre una lomada mirando fijamente al lago y desparrama a unos metros una serie de cabañas muy románticas, ideales para parejas. Permable a la tranquilísima belleza del lugar, tiene una serie de senderitos para caminar y hacer que el aire puro abra el apetito: de su cocina, los salmónidos y el cordero patagónico son altamente recomendados. También hoy un punto de partida para recorrer la isla grande de Tierra del Fuego y todas sus leyendas, Tolhuin está cerca de los centros invernales donde se puede andar sobre la nieve primaveral con raquetas o también, vivir el vértigo de un paseo en trineo tirado por perros siberianos. Disfrutes que la temporada de invierno más larga del país todavía brinda por estos días.

Village life Rest is the main premise, no matter if your’ staying near the village or at some distance, as in the case of the traditional Kaikén Hostel. With a main body of twenty rooms and a restaurant, built in the sixties and totally redecorated with taste and artisan objects; this was a gas station and general store on the road between Ushuaia and Río Grande. It is on a hill overlooking the lake, with scattered cabins, very romantic and special for couples. Surrounded by the calm beauty of the place, it has little paths to go for walks and let the fresh air open your appetite: the salmonides and the Patagonia lamb are the best dishes of its cuisine. Tolhuin is also a starting point to tour the big island of Tierra del Fuego and its legends. It is close to the winter sports centers, where you can walk on the spring snow with snow-shoes or you can enjoy a ride on a dog-sleigh. La Cruz, Yapeyú, Santo Tomé y San Carlos forman parte de un corredor que sigue los pasos de los Jesuitas por la provincia de Corrientes

APEYU.– Puede apenas tomar dos días recorrer estos pueblos que los jesuitas fundaron en el siglo XV, donde se pueden visitar vestigios importantes de la convivencia indígena-española. El mapa promete un circuito de 200 km por la ruta nacional 14, con cuatro paradas: Yapeyú, La Cruz, Santo Tomé y San Carlos. La historia es vibrante y vale la pena ser escuchada con atención. Un objetivo de la colonización española en América fue la evangelización de los pueblos indígenas. Los sacerdotes de la Compañía de Jesús fundaron 30 misiones, que en todos los casos apuntan a mantener los valores culturales del indígena, como el idioma guaraní, y a protegerlo del proceso de conquista bélico generado por los portugueses y españoles. Hoy, 30 pueblos de Brasil, Paraguay y la Argentina resguardan su historia en el Circuito Internacional de las Misiones Jesuíticas. Tanto en La Cruz como en Yapeyú cuesta llevar la cuenta de los ladrillos y piedras antiquísimas que se asoman desde las construcciones. Los poblados están emplazados arriba de los sitios arqueológicos, la plaza principal está sobre la original plaza de armas, los materiales jesuitas fueron reutilizados para las viviendas, calles o veredas y, paso a paso, se descifran pedacitos de historia. El patrimonio se observa en todo el casco urbano, ya que el trazado actual de la ciudad coincide con el antiguo, y permite de esta manera lograr con cada excavación, una reconstrucción de la época según los vestigios encontrados. La Cruz comenzó con la tarea de rescate y conservación de piezas arqueológicas en 2001, cuando se organizó la recuperación de los antiguos hornos subterráneos donde se cocinaban ladrillos, tejas y vasijas.

APEYU.– It may take two or three days to visit these towns founded by Jesuits in the XV Century, that still have important vestiges of the coexistence of Aboriginal and Spanish cultures. The map shows 200 km through national road 14 and the four stops are: Yapeyú, La Cruz, Santo Tomé and San Carlos. From the last stop there are only 70 km more to reach the limit with Misiones province were you can continue the historic tour in San Ignacio’s ruins. History is vibrant: one of the goals of Spanish colonization in America was to evangelize the indigenous populations of these lands. The priests of “Compañía de Jesús” founded more than 30 missions which in all the cases showed Jesuits ideas about keeping indigenous cultural values alive, such as the guaraní language, and protect it from the war conquering process of Portugal and Spain. Currently 30 towns form the Jesuit Missions International Circuit placed in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. In La Cruz and in Yapeyú is not easy to count the amount of ancient bricks in the constructions since these are placed above the old archeological sites, the main square is over the old parade ground, Jesuit materials were used in the new houses, streets or sidewalks and that is why you can discover history in each step. Patrimony is seen all over the city, because the new urban design coincides with the old one allowing a reconstruction of those times with the vestiges found in each excavation. La Cruz has started in 2001 the rescue of archeological pieces when they started the recovery of old underground furnaces where bricks, tiles and pots were cooked.

Las tardes transcurren tanto en sulky o a caballo por pastizales de tierra colorada donde de repente pasan avestruces, y en un minuto el paisaje se cierra, aparece la vegetación y se presenta el monte. Ya luego de 3 km, en el horizonte se funde el río Uruguay y la joya de la estancia: sus amplias playas de arena blanca. Aquí, ha llegado el momento para preparar el pic nic y reposar bajo el sol. De regreso, el atardecer campestre espera ser fotografiado mientras el mate con hierbas y los pastelitos acompañan el disfrute. Por las noches, no hay nada como instalarse en el living con una copa de vino en mano y frente al hogar a leña dejarse hipnotizar por los colores del fuego y el silencio del lugar.
dates back to the beginnings of the XX century. Following the refined details of the architecture of those times, the house has 12 rooms overlooking an inner courtyard. Gastronomy combines Corriente’s dishes such as: asado, locro (a stew) and empanadas with regional food of guaraní origin: sopa paraguaya and mandioca. Afternoons can be spent on a sulky (a type of hansom cab) or riding a horse through the red earth pastures where you can see from time to time ostriches, or change from open space to lush vegetation or hills. After 3 km one can see the horizon line melting with the Uruguay River and find the pearl of the ranch: wide white sand beaches (which are great to prepare picnics and relax under the sun). On your way back you can photograph the sunset while enjoying of “pastelitos” and “mate”. At night, the best option is to go to the common area with a glass of wine in your hand, facing the chimney and surrender your senses to the fire and the silence of the place.

Primavera junto al lago En la cabecera Sur del Gutiérrez, allí donde Río Negro se viste de su mejor traje patagónico, la estancia Peuma-Hue recibe con placeres varios
E
l cerro D’Agostini ya no está cubierto de nieve pero aún quedan vestigios de ella en un mix con el verde que enamora. Aquí, en la estancia Peuma-Hue, la primavera ha ganado terreno y se va sumando con sus perfumes y colores a las cabalgatas por la orilla del lago Gutiérrez; las salidas en kayak; las caminatas en medio del bosque donde se mecen los coihues y radales. Con las casas de troncos y enormes ventanales siempre listas para recibir cálidamente a los huéspedes, la estancia convida con programas entretenidos en esta época del año, combinando en sutil equilibrio lo deportivo con la tranquilidad absoluta. Es que, muy cerca, está el cerro Catedral, el centro de esquí más grande de la Patagonia, listo para derrapar en manga corta y sentir ese placer del sol a la par de la adrenalina. Al regresar de la acción, Peuma Hue sabe de más placeres: música en el templo ecuménico, buena gastronomía regada de vinos argentinos, y el descanso asegurado con las habitaciones inmersas en el silencio del paisaje.

Los turistas arman un remolino en torno a la puerta de un restaurant eligiendo entre empanadas, locros, tamales y humitas para el almuerzo. Los lugareños se persignan con la fe que los caracteriza delante de las espigadas torres de la iglesia de San Francisco y así se deshilvana el día, con el sol pleno y la belleza que le hace justicia al apodo de “La Linda” que lleva la ciudad de Salta. Habrá que elegir por dónde comenzar a caminarla, que es el modo ideal de recorrer sus trazos, observar sus fachadas coloniales y de ingresar en cuanto local de artesanías esté abierto. Las calles céntricas concentran en su ejido muchos sitios religiosos con altares repujados en oro y santos bien vestidos. This town of colonial constructions and wrought-iron balconies has lots to offer: museums, tastes, the mountain, the artisans, and folklore are a living part of the culture

de Julio, sus fuentes y naranjos en flor. Pero por ser la más grande no menosprecia en elegancia a la Iglesia de la Merced, de estilo gótico; ni a la patrimonial Iglesia de San Francisco, con una de las torres más altas de Sudamérica con 53 metros de altura; ni al Convento de San Bernardo cuya puerta de entrada en sí ya vale la pena: tallada en algarrobo por manos aborígenes allá por 1796. Se respira historia en estas calles coronadas de florcitas en los balcones y muros de un metro de espesor, porque cada edificio tiene una historia para contar. Frente a la plaza central, el Cabildo convida con sus arcos y su veleta siempre rodeada de pájaros; y con un museo, el MAAM (Museo Arqueológico de Alta Montaña), organizado como los mejores del Viejo Continente, con los cuerpos momificados de tres niños incas exhibidos en total respeto. Locals make the sign of the cross across from the colorfully high towers of Saint Francis Church, and the day goes on with beauty that justifies the nickname given to the city: “Salta La Linda” (“Pretty Salta”). Walking is the ideal way to get to know it, so you will have to choose where to start. You can gaze at the colonial façades and enter every artisan store you can find. Down town streets are full of religious sites, with altars covered in gold and well dressed saints. There is the Cathedral with its Virgin of the Miracle, the provincial patron, in symmetrical rose with golden ornaments, across from 9th of July Plaza. The elegant gothic Church of Mercy is as imposing as the Church and Convent of Saint Francis, with one of the highest towers in South America, 53 meters tall; the door at the entrance of San Bernardo Convent really merits a visit: indigenous hands sculpted it out of carob wood in 1796. You breathe history in the streets crowned with flowers in the balconies and the thick walls, and each building has a story to tell. Across from the main plaza, the Cabildo invites you to sea its arches and its weather vane always surrounded by birds; and a museum, the MAAM (High Mountain Archeological Museum), organized in the manner of the best museums of the Old Continent, with the mummified bodies of three

Hoy, las manos se ponen a la labor de tejidos, orfebrería y modelado en barro, todas expresiones de los valles. Caminar con el aire del Norte en las espaldas lleva hacia el Cerro San Bernardo, un lugar de naturaleza donde trepar es buen ejercicio para ver desde la cima a todo el tejido urbano abrazado por las estribaciones montañosas. Aunque también una buena opción sea subirse al teleférico y guardar resto para bajar hasta el Monumento a Güemes y tomar allí una fotografía clásica de esta urbe de corte gauchesco. Como los gauchos no faltan y mucho menos, el folclore como música natural, las noches vibran a su compás en las peñas. Hay muchas, es cierto, pero una tiene hasta zamba propia. Se trata de Balderrama, que a la manera de las antiguas pulperías, rebosa de gente cada noche con cantos, bailes y comidas típicas. Es que, cuando se encienden los farolitos de la ciudad, nada se apaga en ella. Todo lo contrario: su gente, su música y su arquitectura siguen vibrando.

Later on the Jesuits installed a tannery there. Today there are busy hands knitting, and producing silver works and modeling ceramics, expressions of the local crafts of the nearby valleys. If you have the northern wind on your back, then you are walking towards Mount San Bernard, a natural place, where climbing is a great exercise and when you get to the top you have a full view of the town surrounded by foothills. Another option is to take the lift and then walk down to the Monument to Güemes, the local hero of the Independence Wars, and take a classical photo. And gauchos abound, along with natural folklore music, in the nightly peñas folklore clubs: the most famous is Balderrama. With a no less famous zamba dedicated to it. Like the old “pulperías” (general stores), it’s always full of people, singing and dancing. When the little street lamps of the town are lit, life is ever brighter: people, music and architecture vibrate in the night.

URMAMARCA.– Llegamos a las Salinas Grandes en una noche fría y silenciosa. No sabíamos que estábamos yendo hacia allí. Fue la misma noche la que ayudó a concretar la sorpresa de un amanecer naranja, único, desparramado encima del blanco inmutable y eterno de los hexágonos que la sal dibuja en el suelo jujeño. La anécdota, hoy, ayuda a recordarse pequeño en ese mar blanquísimo. A caminar ese amanecer de nuevo con la memoria y sentir el frío que despabila en la cara. Es que esta es la tercera salina más gran-

Porque cuando la temporada de lluvias las cubre de más de 30 cm de agua, el suelo se vuelve un espejo del mismo cielo y la sal se tiñe de un turquesa que no le es propio. Se adueña del cielo de la Puna, podría decirse, pero sin arrogancias. Mientras unos hombres extraen la sal a fuerza de picos y hachas, otros llegan en camiones a buscarla y cargarla en sacos pesados, y unos pocos están sentados a diario en la zona de piletas de extracción con una herramienta punzante en mano para tallarla y darle formato y razón de ser artística. Hay llamitas grandes y pequeñas, chozas miniatura, terrones diversos para comprar y quedarse en casa con un trocito de este paisaje. Es que todo es sal en este universo blanco. Caminar las Salinas es un placer extraño y caluroso, cuando el sol comienza a apretar en esta altura ya surcando el mediodía (y a 4170 sobre el nivel del mar). Un gorro y agua serán entonces los elementos de base para reconocerlas de a pie, aunque hay algo aún más indispensable: una cámara que permita captar lo diferente de este sitio aparentemente idéntico en cada palmo. Entre las figuras que irrumpen en él está

And in the rainy season there is more than 30 cm of water covering them, the soil becomes a mirror of the sky and the salt is tinted turquoise. You could say the sky takes over the Puna, but without arrogance. While some men extract the salt with picks and hatchets, others come in trucks to take it away in heavy bags and a few are sitting every day near the extraction pools with a pointy tool, carving the salt into artistic forms. There are big and small llamas, miniature huts, a diversity of lumps to take home to have a piece of the landscape. Everything is salt in this white universe. Walking the Salt Flats in the daytime is a hot and strange pleasure, when the sun starts to hit down on the ground close to noon (4170 meters above sea level). You basically need a hat and water to get to
know the place on foot, though there is something even more essential: a camera that will allow you to capture the different nuances of the site apparently identical to itself. Among the figures changing the view is the Nevado de Chañi, a snowy peak, guarding its back; the salt bags in uneven piles on the flat ground; the water of the pools shining in the sun. Each thing merits a photography. As does the road that takes you through the flats. Because to get to the Salinas Grandes, starting from beautiful Purmamarca, you take National Route 52 that traverses several little towns, a classic

el Nevado de Chañi, un cerro coronado de nieve que les cuida las espaldas; los bolsones de sal amontonados que forman parvitas desprolijas en medio de la lisura del suelo; el agua de las piletas que destella bajo el sol. Cada cosa, es digna de ser fotografiada. Tanto como el camino que lleva hasta ellas, claro. Porque para acceder a las Salinas Grandes hay que tomar, desde la bella Purmamarca la ruta nacional 52 e ir atravesando un derrotero de pueblitos, todo un clásico para los paisajes de Jujuy. Quisquira, Patacal y La Ciénaga se desgranan en casitas de techos coloridos para ir, de a poco, dejando lugar sólo al paisaje de cardones y pájaros en vuelo y una ruta serpenteante que trepa casi 700 m en unos pocos kilómetros. Se está entonces pisando la Cuesta de Lipán, sus curvas y contracurvas, sus precipicios y sus rincones entre verdes y naranjas, hasta llegar al Abra del Potrerillo, lugar donde cielo y sal se juntan sin preámbulos. Los obreros pueden narrar lo que es pasar allí largas jornadas y quizás uno esté apenas por unas horas, picnic mediante. Pero valdrá la pena sentir los pasos crujientes deformando los hexágonos para entender el latir de una tierra sedienta, diferente y única como su blanco interminable.

Quisquira, Patacal and La Ciénaga, full of little houses with multicolored roofs, slowly pass by, leaving a landscape of cactus (cardones) and birds flying over a winding road, climbing almost 700 meter in a few kilometers. You are then almost at the Lipán Slope, with its curves and counter-curves, its abiss and its green and orange corners, till you come to the Potrerillo Flat, where the sky and the salt come together without introduction. The workers can tell you what it means to be there long shifts, while you are there for a picnic. But it will be well worth your while to feel the crunchy steps deforming the hexagons and understand the beat of a thirsty land, as different and unique as its unending white.

el Océano Atlántico, las costas escarpadas, el reino de las aves. En este viaje por toda la provincia, la primera parada es clásica y fundamental. Los glaciares esperan con su magia posados sobre el lago y El Calafate es el punto de partida hacia el Parque Nacional (a 80 km) que reúne las moles de hielo, empezando por el Perito Moreno, la estrella a la que uno puede acercarse navegando hasta casi tocar su pared Norte de 60 metros de altura y ver desprenderse en trozos a cada rato con enorme estruendo. Desde las pasarelas, la vista es panorámica y permite apreciar al gigante que marcó estrías en los cerros renegridos de su entorno. La visión congelada de este parque ocupa 2600 km2, inasibles, es cierto, pero factibles de conocerse caminando con grampones sobre el Perito o aventurándose en barco a la máxima proximidad de los hielos, sorteando los icebergs que deambulan e incluso, pueden ser vistos desde el pueblo, como un preludio de lo que viene unos kilómetros más cerca de la zona protegida. Tanto así deslumbra la inmensidad del Upsala de 50 km de largo por 10 de ancho; o el más pequeño Spegazzini, con constantes fracciones que caen al agua. Es interesante descubrir sus morrenas –las rocas que arrastraron en su formación hacia el frente y los costados– y también, cómo ocurren sus rompimientos, una suerte esperada por todos a la hora de visitar al Perito. El casco urbano de El Calafate convoca con sabores vernáculos, shows, hotelería de alto nivel y paseos de compras, todo lo que complementa a la vida natural en las horas en que no se está de excursión. Pero también involucra algunas vivencias geográficas del entorno cercano como, por ejemplo, ir a avistar el vuelo rasante de los flamencos rosados en la laguna de Nimez, apenas unas cuadras separada del centro; o bien trepar

Andes mountains, the abrupt abysses, the fertile valleys; on the Oriental side, the Atlantic Ocean, the jagged coasts, the bird kingdom. In this trip through the Province, our first stop is classic and basic. The glaciers await with their magic hovering over the lake and El Calafate is the starting point towards the National Park (distant 80 km) with the ice extensions, starting with the Perito Moreno, the star, that you can approach on boat till you almost touch the North wall, 60 meters high, and see pieces of ice break off with an enormous roar. From the hanging bridges the view is panoramic and you can appreciate the giant ice river that produced stretch marks on the black mountains surrounding it. The frozen vision of this park covers 2600 square kilometers, unfathomable, its true, but you can tour the ice, walking with spiked shoes on the Perito Moreno or navigating ever so close to the icy walls, eluding the icebergs floating on the waters. And you can even see the glacier from the town, as a prelude of what you will experience in the protected area. And again your are dazzled by the immensity of the Usala, 50 kilometers long and 10 wide or the smaller Spegazzini, with fractions falling constantly to the water. It is interesting to discover its morrenas –the rocks pushed to the front and to the sides- and also to understand how the ice breaks, something everyone wants to see when visiting the Perito Moreno. The town of El Calafate offers local food, shows, high level hotels and shopping tours, complementing nature when you are not out on a tour. But it also includes some geographical experiences, as for example when you visit the low flying pink Flamingoes in the Nimez, only a few blocks from downtown or you can climb mount Calafate, guarding the back of the constructions. You can take a ride on a 4 wheel drive vehicle, to see the lake from the highest possible point. Por la Ruta 40 Mítica como pocas, esta ruta atraviesa de Norte a Sur la Argentina y de allí gana su encanto. Aquí, abrazada por la estepa, ayuda a conocer un derrotero de estancias perdidas en el tiempo, aunque bien conservadas, así como una serie de montes hasta llegar, en sentido Norte, al patrimonio aborigen por excelencia de esta provincia: la Cueva de las Manos, impresiones pictóricas sobre la roca que expresan a las claras la vida de los tehuelches. Los acantilados de la ría otorgan un recorrido zigzagueante que puede hacerse también a remo, al lado de los islotes donde habitan los lobos marinos de un pelo. Magia costera Ahora es la Ruta 3 la que encara hacia el Sur para ir dejando la naturaleza de Deseado y sumergirse en el más joven de los parques nacionales, título que le cabe a la par de ser el primero de tipo marítimo en el país. Monte León es una ecorregión que comparte mar y estepa con 40 km de costa. Para llegar hasta la orilla de profundísimos acantilados hay que desandar un par de kilómetros compartiendo camino con guanacos y choiques a la carrera, así como con diversos sitios arqueológicos de más de 5000 años de antigüedad. Las matas negras, achaparradas ante el viento potente, marcan la flora del lugar. Más adelante, las aves son dueñas del escenario costero: los cauquenes de tierra firme empiezan a dar paso a cormoranes, chorlitos, gaviotines, garzas, ostreros y una colonia de más de 75.000 parejas de pingüinos que arriban en los primeros días de septiembre para quedarse hasta abril y mientras tanto, claro, reproducirse. Lobos marinos, toninas overas saltando sobre el agua y algún que otro delfín austral de paso marcan el paisaje de la península.

A pie o en bicicleta, se puede llegar hasta la estación del ferrocarril, desandar la costanera de un extremo al otro o bien pasear hasta la plaza principal y observar las rejas italianas de hierro forjado que son sello indiscutible de la arquitectura colonial que mezcla varios estilos, francés, art noveau e italiano. Otro paseo desemboca en lo que fuera el primer centro poblacional de la ciudad, en el barrio conocido como Quinto Cuartel, donde los ladrillos a la vista y más rejas conforman el paisaje urbano datado en 1800. La Abadía de los Benedictinos es otro sitio al que visitar: apenas saliendo del puente Rosario-Victoria hacia la izquierda, esta comunidad pone manos a la obra en licores, miel, propóleos, quesos y un parque inmenso repleto de árboles con recorridos guiados. La serenidad de este sitio termina de relajar cuerpo y mente. Tanto como lo puede hacer también una navegación de medio día por los islotes del delta, dejando que los pájaros sobrevuelen la cabeza y animándose a que piquen los peces, que aquí abundan.

Allí se pueden descubrir los yacimientos de la cultura aguada tales como pinturas rupestres, utensilios y otros hallazgos que dan cuenta de su paso por aquí. Al caer la noche, las lechuzas y los sapos invitan al resguardo o a la mera observación paciente de la plenitud del cielo y las estrellas. Claro, a no olvidarse del abrigo ya que las temperaturas son otro contraste importante a tener en cuenta.

A
l llegar la primavera en la Patagonia argentina, el área natural de Punta Tombo se viste de fiesta para recibir a los pingüinos de Magallanes. Estos animales son esperados, a sol y sombra, con una vigilia que permite disfrutar su llegada, la etapa del cortejo y su posterior reproducción. Este borde angosto y rocoso al sur de la provincia de Chubut es el escenario en el que las pequeñas aves despliegan todo su encanto cuando el calendario marca la segunda mitad de septiembre. Con su plumaje monocromático cual smoking se convierten en el principal atractivo de la zona, mientras los visitantes aguardan el enamoramiento y el sí, quiero entre machos y hembras. Es posible acercarse a ellos sin interrumpir su celebración. Pero habrá que armarse de paciencia. También, hay que estar preparados con abrigo suficiente y algunos condimentos, como chocolates, licores o un buen mate humeante. Incluso, para poder observarlos, se puede arremeter el mar en uno de los barcos que recorren los 3,5 km de esta franja pedregosa. Pero, desde todas partes del mundo, la cita tiene un lugar de

encuentro online, a través de una transmisión ininterrumpida durante 72 horas, para que nadie se pierda el espectáculo. Bastará con tipear www.chubut.gov.ar/pinguinos en Internet y allí estarán los pingüinos. Al ritmo de las austeras aguas chubutenses, donde el rugido de las olas es protagonista, los primeros machos llegan desde las costas del Brasil. Estos pingüinos –a diferencia de la mayoría de las especies animales– cuentan con una particularidad: son monógamos y mantiene una relación sumamente amable con su pareja. Tanto es así que, durante la espera de su compañera, ellos se abocan a la reconstrucción del mismo nido que fue utilizado el año anterior. Al cabo de unos días a puro sol y chapuzones, las hembras arriban para elegir a su macho. Entonces, comienza el rito de conquista y los suspiros de los observadores que pueden caminar entre ellos por senderos de interpretación y luego, cuando nacen las crías, observar en detalle su alimentación, sus pasos inseguros y su plumaje en evolución. Este también será el terreno costero donde los padres preparan a sus crías para el viaje mar adentro al llegar el otoño.

hen spring arrives to Argentina’s Patagonia, the natural area of Punta Tombo welcomes the Magellan penguins. These animals are been awaited, from dawn to dusk, in a vigil prepared to enjoy their arrival, their mating ceremony and their breeding. This narrow and stony edge to the south of Chubut province is the scenario in which this birds show their charm by middle September. With a monochromatic plumage mimicking a smoking, they are the main attraction of the area, visitors wait for the moment when they “fell in love” and say “I do”. It is possible to get close to them without interrupting their celebration. But you have to be patient and also have enough warm clothes and other things such as: chocolates, liquors or a tasty “mate”. You can even watch them closely from a boat that will take you through 3,5 km along this stony edge. It doesn’t matter where you are, you can be anywhere in the world and still see it. That’s when the conquering rite begins and observers walk among the penguins following the interpreting paths. When penguin’s offspring are born, people can see in those paths the way they are fed, the way they walk and their change of feathers. That area of coast will also be the place chosen by the parents to prepare their brood for their trip out to sea when fall arrives.

Las carnes rojas son, en este sitio, un privilegio. Se puede comenzar con una selección de achuras crujientes y seguir con otras carnes a las brasas. Aquí, el cuchillo de mango de madera y buen corte también es tradición y está a la venta, para llevárselo de recuerdo.
