Na viragem de mais uma página da nossa história, vamos buscar ao passado a inspiração para projectarmos o futuro, tudo isto no ano em que a TAAG ocupa a presidência da AFRAA, o que nos dá responsabilidades acrescidas.

At the turn of another page in our history, we look to the past for inspiration to project the future, all this in the year in which TAAG occupies the presidency of AFRAA, a position that gives us added responsibilities.

om esta capa queremos destacar a importância da nova aeronave, numa edição dedicada aos 82 anos da TAAG. Os nossos maiores agradecimentos por mais este encontro que, acreditamos, contribui para reforçar os laços que nos ligam. Comungar consigo a nossa alegria pelos 82 anos de existência da TAAG, celebrados a 8 de Setembro, é o nosso primeiro desejo. Marcada por momentos altos e baixos, a TAAG tem vivido muitas histórias, feito muitos amigos e ajudado a realizar sonhos. Actualmente, temos estado a conceber um plano estratégico e uma nova Visão para a década 2020-2030.

Porém, situações imponderáveis e inesperadas, cujas causas são conhecidas por todos, infligiram alguma perturbação neste processo. Todavia, não esmoreceram o nosso ensejo de assegurar o contínuo aperfeiçoamento dos nossos serviços. Assim, dado que neste processo de reestruturação a revisão da estratégia de rede e frota é imprescindível, congratulamo-nos por já termos recebido duas aeronaves do tipo DASH 8 Q-400, que nos vão permitir baixar os preços das viagens domésticas, bem como abrir novos destinos domésticos, quando regressarmos às operações aéreas comerciais. Os voos de Carga são permitidos e também temos estado a efectuar voos humanitários, respeitando todas as regras de segurança. Devido à necessidade de respeitar as orientações internacionais sobre biossegurança, o nosso Padrão de Serviço ao Passageiro sofreu algumas alterações, tendo sido suprimida a oferta de jornais e revistas. Na mesma situação se encontra esta revista de bordo, a Austral, entretanto disponibilizada nas redes sociais, nomeadamente no website da empresa (www.taag.com), bem como nas suas páginas de Facebook, Instagram e no LinkedIn. Por outro lado, prosseguimos com a gestão da nossa transformação em Sociedade Anónima (S.A.) Na viragem de mais uma página da nossa história, vamos buscar ao passado a inspiração para projectarmos o futuro, tudo isto no ano em que a TAAG ocupa a presidência da AFRAA, o que nos dá responsabilidades acrescidas. Na nossa filosofia, a segurança de voo tem sido um valor sagrado de que não abdicamos. Estamos expectantes quanto a um futuro de constantes melhorias, superações, novas histórias e novas amizades e, por isso, solicitamos-lhe que esteja connosco para vê-lo cumprido. ith this cover, we spotlight the importance of the new aircraft, in an edition dedicated to the 82 years of TAAG. Our greatest thanks for joining us once again on this edition, which we believe contributes to strengthening the ties that bind us. Our first wish is to share with you our joy for the 82 years of TAAG’s existence, celebrated on September 8. Marked by high and low moments, TAAG has lived many stories, made many friends and has helped to realize dreams.

We are presently designing a strategic plan and a new Vision for the 2020-2030 decade, a process that has been facing the challenges of unthinkable and unexpected circumstances, such as the one the world experiences today. However, our sense of an opportunity to ensure the continuous improvement of our services has not waned. We have proceeded to embark in the crucial process of restructuring our strategy for our network and fleet, and we are pleased to announce that we have already received two DASH 8 Q-400 aircraft, which will allow us to offer cheaper domestic flights, as well as open new domestic destinations when we resume our commercial air operations. Cargo flights are allowed and we have also been performing humanitarian flights, in compliance with all effective safety rules.

Due to the need to respect international biosecurity measures, our Passenger Service Standard has undergone some changes, with the supply of newspapers and magazines onboard being discontinued.

The same applies to Austral in-flight magazine, which is currently available on our website (www. taag.com), as well as our pages on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Furthermore, we continue to manage of our transition into a Public Limited Company (S.A.).

At the turn of another page in our history, we look to the past for inspiration to project the future, all this in the year in which TAAG occupies the presidency of AFRAA, a position that gives us added responsibilities. In our philosophy, flight safety is a sacred value that we do not relinquish.

With our eyes set on the future, we look forward to more improvements, achievements, new stories and new friendships, a journey that we invite you to be a part of. om esta capa queremos destacar a importância da nova aeronave, numa edição dedicada aos 82 anos da TAAG. Com efeito, a companhia aérea é criada a 8 de Setembro de 1938, tendo então a designação de DTA (Divisão dos Transportes Aéreos).

Em 1973 transforma-se em empresa de capital misto com a designação de Transportes Aéreos de Angola S.A.R.L. (TAAG), mantendo toda a estrutura da DTA, bem como o Código IATA “DT”, que nos identifica na aviação comercial. A 13 de Fevereiro de 1980 é nacionalizada e adopta a designação TAAG – Linhas Aéreas de Angola, Unidade Económica Estatal (U.E.E.) e mais tarde passa a Empresa Pública (E.P.), tornando- -se a companhia de bandeira. Em 2018 a TAAG é transformada em Sociedade Anónima (S.A.). Apesar das mudanças, a nossa razão de ser mantém-se inalterada: o transporte de carga e de passageiros. Estes são o coração da aviação e sem eles as companhias aéreas colapsam, como se está a verificar actualmente com a crise provocada pelo Coronavírus. Ao celebrar mais um aniversário, a TAAG prossegue a sua brilhante história e com esta nova aquisição acreditamos que os nossos serviços domésticos serão melhorados.

his edition’s cover spotlights the importance of the new aircraft, in an edition dedicated to the 82 years of TAAG. Our airline was created on September 8, 1938 as DTA (Air Transport Division). In 1973, it became a mixed ownership company called Angola Air Transport, S.A.R.L (TAAG), maintaining the entire structure of DTA, as well as the IATA Code “DT”, which still identifies us in commercial aviation. On February 13, 1980, the company was nationalized, adopting the name TAAG Angola Airlines, U.E.E., a State-Owned Enterprise, later becoming a Public Company (E.P.). In 2018, our flag carrier was transformed into a Public Limited Company (S.A.), an ongoing process posing many challenges. Despite the changes, our raison d’être remains unchanged: transporting cargo and passengers. It is the latter that are the heart of aviation. Without them airlines collapse, as we witness today with the crisis caused by the global pandemic of Coronavirus. By celebrating another anniversary, TAAG continues its history and with this new acquisition we believe that our domestic services will be improved.

Depois da estreia, no início de 2020, no Festival Internacional de Cinema de Roterdão, na Holanda, a longa-metragem “Ar Condicionado”, produzida pelo colectivo Geração 80 e realizada por Fradique, foi seleccionada para ser exibida no festival online “We Are One: A Global Film Festival”, uma iniciativa do Tribeca Film Festival em parceria com o YouTube e outros festivais internacionais como Sundance, Cannes ou Toronto. José Kiteculo, Filomena Manuel e David Caracol protagonizam a película que, assim, ficou disponível para o público de forma gratuita.

After its debut at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in the Netherlands in early 2020, the feature film “Air Conditioning”, produced by the Geração 80 collective and directed by Fradique, was selected to be screened at the online festival “We Are One: A Global Film Festival”, an initiative of the Tribeca Film Festival in partnership with YouTube and other international film festivals such as Sundance, Cannes or Toronto. José Kiteculo, Filomena Manuel and David Caracol are the protagonists of the film, which thus became freely available to the public.

O

projecto solidário “Live no Kubico” arrancou no início de Abril, com a época de confinamento devido à Covid-19, e desde então transmitiu nos ecrãs da TPA e em diversas plataformas digitais concertos por onde passaram nomes como Matias Damásio, Euclides da Lomba, Walter Ananaz e Heavy C. O concerto “3G do Semba” juntou Bonga, Paulo Flores e Yuri da Cunha e deixou o país a cantar e a dançar ao ritmo do Semba. Seguiram-se concertos que apresentaram a diversidade cultural do país: Mito Gaspar e Gabriel Tchiema trouxeram-nos os ritmos do Leste e Norte de Angola, Sabino Henda e Justino Handanga cantaram temas do Bié e do Huambo, Baló Januário do Bengo, os Tunjila Tuajokota de Malanje e Socorro do Uíge. As cantoras Yola Semedo, Patrícia Faria, Ary e Edmázia Mayembe recordaram êxitos de sempre. Este projecto tem conquistado os angolanos do interior e muitos da diáspora.

he solidarity project “Live no Kubico” started at the beginning of April, when the first period of Covid-19-required social isolation.

Since then, the project has been broadcasted on TPA channels and several digital platforms, showing concerts with names such as Matias Damásio, Euclides da Lomba, Walter Ananaz and Heavy C. The “3G of Semba” concert, featuring Bonga, Paulo Flores and Yuri da Cunha, left the country singing and dancing to the rhythm of Semba. The success was repeated with concerts showcasing the cultural diversity of the country: Mito Gaspar and Gabriel Tchiema brought us the rhythms of Eastern and Northern Angola, Sabino Henda and Justino Handanga styling central highlands themes from Bié and Huambo, Baló Januário from Bengo, Tunjila Tuajokota from Malanje and Socorro from Uíge. Singers Yola Semedo, Patrícia Faria, Ary and Edmázia Mayembe remembered their usual hits, in a project that has conquered Angolans from the interior of the country to the diasporas.

Está patente no site da Embaixada de Angola em Lisboa uma exposição que reúne trabalhos de 32 criadores angolanos em Portugal, subordinada ao tema “Criação Artística em Tempo de Pandemia”. Organizada pelos Serviços Culturais da Embaixada, a mostra, como refere o embaixador Carlos Alberto Fonseca na sua apresentação, reflecte que “face às restrições impostas pela pandemia que se alastrou a uma escala global, o talento dos artistas plásticos angolanos em Portugal não se inibiu, consolidando em obras, num espaço e nesse tempo, a percepção estética que souberam com mestria expressar”.

An exhibition bringing together the works of 32 Angolan creators in Portugal is on the website of the Angolan Embassy in Lisbon. Organized by the Cultural Services of the Embassy, the exhibition, as stated by Ambassador Carlos Alberto Fonseca in his presentation, reflects that “in the face of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic that has spread on a global scale, the talent of Angolan artists in Portugal has not been inhibited, consolidating in works, in a space and at this time, the aesthetic perception that they have masterfully been able to express”.

O júri do programa “Diversidade”, que atribui subvenções financiadas pela União Europeia a projectos culturais, aprovou por unanimidade as propostas do “União Recreativo Kilamba” (URK) e do programa de TV “Clube da Fantasia”. As duas candidaturas, seleccionadas de um conjunto de dez, foram escolhidas, no caso do grupo URK por implementar a empregabilidade no município do Rangel, e no caso do “Clube da Fantasia” por fomentar o interesse pela literatura e valorizar o criador de literatura infantil.

The jury of the “Diversity” program, which awards grants funded by the European Union to cultural projects, unanimously approved the proposals of “União Recreativo Kilamba” and TV program “Clube da Fantasia”. The two applications, selected from a list of 10, were chosen, in the case of the URK group for implementing employability in the municipality of Rangel, and in the case of the “Clube da Fantasia” for fostering interest in literature and valuing authors of children’s literature.

uma iniciativa desta galeria de Luanda, esteve patente, entre Junho e Julho, uma exposição virtual e física com obras de artistas plásticos nacionais. Além da mostra nas instalações da galeria, o público pôde apreciar, numa visita virtual de 360 graus, trabalhos de Mestre Kapela, Fineza Teta, Paulo Kussy, Mampuya, Francisco Vidal, Armando Scoott, Ricardo Kapuca, Sarafim Serlon, Alcides Malayka, Álvaro Macieira, Tho Simões e Uólofe, através do site www.talatonaart.co.ao e do Instagram. O projecto teve como principal objectivo manter activo o sector durante a pandemia da Covid-19.

Figura grande da tradição carnavalesca de Luanda, o histórico comandante do grupo União 10 de Dezembro, do distrito Urbano da Maianga, dedicou mais de quatro décadas àquela que é considerada a maior manifestação cultural do país. Nascido em Kangadala, Malanje, em 1962, cresceu em Luanda, onde cedo se apaixonou pelo Carnaval. À frente do União 10 de Dezembro, que às suas ordens venceu quatro títulos, arrecadou por 14 vezes o título de melhor comandante do Carnaval de Luanda.

Pela sua entrega à celebração foi homenageado, em 2011, pelo Ministério da Cultura.

A major figure in Luanda’s carnival tradition, the historic commander of the União 10 de Dezembro group in the Maianga urban district dedicated more than four decades of his life to what is considered the largest cultural manifestation in the country. Born in Kangandala, Malanje, in 1962, he grew up in Luanda, where he soon fell in love with Carnival. At the head of the União 10 de Dezembro, which under his leadership won four titles, he collected 14 times the title of best Luanda Carnival commander. For his commitment to the popular celebration, he was honored in 2011 by Ministry of Culture.

TAAG, tal como as suas congéneres, também se ressente da crise mundial na aviação provocada pela pandemia. Tripulações em terra, aviões imobilizados, ameaças de falência e despedimentos configuram o cenário catastrófico mundial. Todavia, no meio desta adversidade, a capacidade de resiliência da companhia de bandeira angolana torna-se visível. É que as crises têm sido encaradas como oportunidades de renascimento e crescimento.

AAG, like other airlines, is also suffering from the global aviation crisis caused by the pandemic. Grounded crews, grounded aircraft, threats of bankruptcy and layoffs set the catastrophic global scene. It is, however, in the midst of these adversities that the Angolan flag carrier shows its capacity for resilience, by viewing this crisis as an opportunity for rebirth and growth.

THE REBRANDING The current crisis is the worst in the history of the flag carrier, but it is being managed with actions aimed at transforming it into a New TAAG. Starting with the fleet, which will receive six Dash 8-400 aircraft, a modern turboprop airplane tailored for short-range flights. This is a “new moment” in that it is “an aircraft better suited for the domestic flight segment and some regional flights, allowing cheaper tickets and more weekly frequencies”, assures the company’s commercial director. With this new equipment, the company can consider opening domestic routes. On the other hand, all these new aircraft already sport the new liveries, whose design aspires to be more contemporary, representing the first step towards the rebranding of the company, while maintaining its original logo, which stylizes an Angolan national symbol, the Giant Sable Antelope, often considered the most beautiful and majestic of antelopes.

O REBRANDING A crise actual é a pior em toda a história da companhia de bandeira, mas está a ser gerida com acções que visam a sua transformação numa Nova TAAG. A começar pela frota, que vai receber seis aviões do tipo Dash-8, uma aeronave moderna a turbo-hélice, vocacionada para voos de curta distância. É um “novo momento” na medida em que se trata de “uma aeronave mais adequada para servir o segmento de voos domésticos e alguns regionais. Vai permitir bilhetes mais baratos e mais frequências semanais”, garante o director comercial da empresa, Carlos von Hafe.

Com este novo equipamento a TAAG pode equacionar a abertura de rotas domésticas. Por outro lado, todas estas novas aeronaves vêm já pintadas com o novo design, que se quer mais moderno e representa o primeiro passo para o rebranding da companhia, mantendo todavia, no seu logótipo, um símbolo nacional angolano, a Palanca Negra Gigante, várias vezes considerada o mais belo e majestoso dos antílopes.

lar desta empresa é não só abordar questões de carácter técnico, mas deve ser também para ressaltar o humanismo e profissionalismo demonstrados pelos seus colaboradores nos tempos mais difíceis. É o que está a acontecer actualmente: equipas preparam ou realizam voos humanitários e de carga, mesmo sabendo das suas possíveis consequências. A mesma postura dominava os jovens tripulantes que, sensivelmente em 1979, aceitaram ficar baseados no Luena, independentemente das condições, para realizar voos internos com a aeronave YAK-40, para destinos como, por exemplo, Kamaxilo e Lumbala Nguimbo. Sempre que necessário, colaboraram também nos voos humanitários para o transporte de doentes e deficientes físicos, vítimas do conflito bélico. Neste âmbito, a aviação em Angola pós-independência tem muitas histórias para contar. Entre as múltiplas acções de solidariedade, recorde-se que, em 1998, no voo reinaugural para Paris, a Direcção-Geral da TAAG convidou dez crianças órfãs do Kuito para participarem do voo feito no Boeing 747, baptizado com o nome da sua cidade, e visitarem, durante uma semana, a cidade de Paris e a Eurodisney. Em 1992, no rescaldo da conjuntura existente, apoiou crianças que não tinham para onde ir, algumas oriundas das províncias. Posteriormente, a TAAG conseguiu que fossem encaminhadas para vários lares sociais ou acolhidas por instituições religiosas. Dois deles, após a sua formação, conseguiram a sua integração na área técnica da empresa. É conhecido também o apoio a deficientes, sendo o caso mais emblemático o do falecido Babas, um mudo protegido e acarinhado por todos os colaboradores da Sede.

difficult times. This is what happens today, when teams prepare or carry out humanitarian and cargo flights while knowing the possible consequences. This is the same spirit that imbued the young crew members who, roughly in 1979, accepted to be based in Luena, regardless of the conditions, to carry out internal flights with YAK-40 aircraft, to destinations such as Kamaxilo and Lumbala Nguimbo.

Where necessary, they also worked on humanitarian flights to transport sick and disabled persons, victims of the civil war. In this context, aviation in post-independent Angola has many stories to tell.

Among the many actions of solidarity, it should be remembered that in 1998, on the reinaugural flight to Paris, TAAG’s Directorate-General invited ten orphaned children from Kuito to take part in the flight made on a Boeing 747, named after their city, who visited the city of Paris and the then Euro Disney Resort for a week. In 1992, in the aftermath of the rekindling of the armed conflict, TAAG supported children who had nowhere to go, some coming from the provinces. Later, TAAG arranged for them to be taken in by various foster homes or childcare provided by religious institutions. Two of them, after obtaining education, managed to join the company’s technical area. TAAG is also known for sup-

During the armed conflict, TAAG’s aircraft were practically the only link between the provincial capitals. During the 2009 crisis with the European Union, TAAG reacted by refounding the company, focusing on modernizing its management methods and adding technological innovations such as the current Call Center, Website and Frequent Flyer Program, in addition to digital control tools for aircraft maintenance and operational management. Regular IOSA audits were successfully carried out and the company obtained a good rating by Skytrax. This propelled the company to improve relations with other African countries and assume responsibilities at AFRAA, in the wake of receiving various forms of recognition for its performance.

THE NEARER EAST The new DASH 8-400s will bring us closer to the distant provinces in Eastern Angola. The flight routes to Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul and Moxico will be prioritized, making this region more accessible to those wishing to visit it on business or sightseeing pleasure.

Known for the immense wealth under their soils, the Lunda provinces produce the valuable diamonds that have earned them international fame. While diamond mining is the best-known activity in this region, these provinces offer many other business opportunities, from agro-industry to wood and phosphate exploration and processing, fertilizer production and even waste recycling. Further south, in the Zambezi Basin, Moxico has great hydrographic resources rivalling its agriculture and forestry potential, and even the sweet honey from the biggest province of Angola.

With their eyes on the future, the eastern provinces proudly remember their history. Cradle of the Lunda-Cokwe and Luvale peoples, they preserve their art and traditions, especially the Cyanda, the ceremonial Cokwe dance performed to the sound of Ngoma drummers, as well as distinctive sculptures and masks. This is the land of Mukanda, a ritual that marks the transition of young people to adulthood, of Luvale dance rituals and music instruments, and of the Makixi, ritual figures representing ancestors who manifest themselves through dancers.

Ao longo dos anos, a iniciativa foi crescendo e ganhando projecção e credibilidade, aumentando o número de categorias em competição e estendendo-se também à hotelaria. Em 2020, Cláudio Silva, responsável pelo portal, atribui o sucesso desta premiação a vários factores. “Em primeiro lugar, os Prémios trazem reconhecimento e prestígio aos vencedores. É uma homenagem ao trabalho árduo feito durante o último ano, com todas as dificuldades conhecidas neste sector, nesta economia e neste país. Selecting competitors and awarding the most coveted prizes – Restaurant of the Year, Chef of the Year, Best Hotel, Best Resort and Best Gastronomic Experience – is in the hands of a jury comprised of personalities linked to the hotel, restaurant and tourism business: Chef Marilene da Boa Morte, Chef Helt Araújo, sommelier Hildérico Coutinho, manager Margarida Minas and the LNL management team.

The new residential blocks, business centers, shopping malls and hotels coexist with colonial-era homes, such as that of Dr. Richard Kandt, the German doctor and explorer who was the first European to live in Rwanda, today housing the Museum of Natural History.

Our trip began at the typical Nyamirambo neighborhood, where we discovered the city’s vibrant rhythm in the maze of streets packed with traffic and all sorts of commerce, where the sympathy of the sellers is captivating. Communication is not a problem as many Rwandans, besides Kinyarwanda, the national language, also speak French or English. In a typical shop selling African print cloths, we chose a garish bolt and right away a tailor offered to make us a “tailor-made” dress. At

These same bananas are used to brew the typical beer of the Great Lakes region, here known as Urwagwa.

On the opposite side of the city emerges the “new” Kigali, with modern buildings, sophisticated brands stores, art galleries, elegant restaurants catering international cuisine and golf courses.

It is in these modern office centers that entrepreneurs and rulers from all over the world meet in Africa’s second-best business environment, according to World Bank’s Doing Business index.

Rwanda’s competitiveness has been recognized by the World Economic Forum, which has undoubtedly drawn industry giants such as Volkswagen and tech companies to settle in the country’s Special Economic Zones, while the academic “City of Innovation” challenges the best universities in the world to contribute to the country’s development.

All over the capital we find crafts shops, but in the modern Kigali Cultural Village you can find craftspersons exhibiting and selling a variety of works, have a meal in one of the restaurants specializing in national cuisine or attend an art show, concert or ongoing event. Focused on culture, the capital is regularly animated by music and film festivals or fashion events that are becoming a reference in Africa.

nesburg, airports where RwandAir operates, we arrived in Rwanda, a country that offers many varied experiences to those who visit it. The most sought after is, without a doubt, climbing the Virunga mountain range. Shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this region is the refuge of the still endangered mountain gorilla.

It was in the late 1980s that the world awakened to the natural beauty of Rwanda, discovering it on the big screen through the film “Gorillas in the Mist”, which told the story of American anthropologist Dian Fossey, who, in the 1960s, moved to Rwanda to study the mysterious mountain gorillas of Central Africa, threatened with extinction. She devoted herself to their protection, allegedly losing her life in that mission. Despite this tragic outcome, her struggle turned out to be successful. By raising awareness on the species’ imminent extinction, she succeeded in getting the Rwandan government and several international conservation organizations to intervene in defense of the primates. And it is precisely these gorillas that attract so many tourists today, becoming one of the assets of a country that, in the last two decades, has been able to turn its fate around and surprise the world with its chosen course.

Only 100 km from the capital, Volcanoes National Park provides this unforgettable experience to those who visit it, being another of Rwanda’s most desirable destinations. The grueling walks on trails cutting through the dense forest is compensated by the landscape, the thrill of discovering a nearly unexplored place and seeing these magnificent giants in their natural habitat.

E são precisamente esses gorilas que hoje atraem tantos turistas, tendo-se transformado num dos trunfos de um país que nas duas últimas décadas soube dar a volta ao destino e surpreender o mundo com o rumo que escolheu.

A apenas 100 km da capital, o Parque Nacional dos Vulcões proporciona esta experiência inesquecível a quem o visita, sendo um dos destinos mais procurados no país. A dificuldade da caminhada por trilhos que rompem a floresta densa é compensada pela paisagem, pela emoção de descobrir um lugar quase inexplorado e de ver estes magníficos gigantes no seu habitat natural.

BEACH AND HISTORY Served by lodges and resorts perfectly blended in the natural environment, and where the Rwandans make a point of revealing the cultural wealth of their country through traditional music and dance shows, these parks are the main destinations of Rwanda, but not the only ones. Though landlocked, the country has transformed the shores of Lake Kivu, on its eastern border, into a bathing area. Beaches and water sports are a draw for those who cannot live without a few days of rest under the tropical sun, tempered by good diving.

Throughout the territory we find well-preserved testimonies of its past, as it happens in Nyanza, nearly 80 km from the capital, where we find the Museum of the King’s Palace, a complex where a hive-shaped building supported by logs stands out, recreating the old royal palace.

Centenary photos scattered throughout the space help to rebuild the daily life of other times.

Nearby, between lawns and well-tended gardens, we find the palace of the last kings, of colonial architecture, which has been restored to house a museum portraying the Nation’s past since the 15th century.

The success achieved does not curb the ambition of Rwanda, which is still determined to grow and bets on tourism as one of the cornerstones of development.

At 26,338 km2 only, but full of attractions, this small country aims to become a giant of African tourism.

Apesar de não ter contacto com o mar, o país transformou as margens do Lago Kivu, que banha a sua fronteira leste, numa zona balnear. Praias e infra-estruturas destinadas à prática de desportos aquáticos são um atractivo para quem não dispensa uns dias de descanso sob o sol tropical, temperados com bons mergulhos.

Por todo o território encontramos testemunhos bem preservados do seu passado, como acontece em Nyanza, a cerca de 80 km da capital, onde encontramos o Museu do Palácio do Rei, um complexo onde se destaca uma construção em forma de colmeia e suportada por paus, que recria o palácio real antigo. Fotos centenárias espalhadas pelo espaço ajudam a reconstruir o quotidiano de outros tempos. Perto, entre relvados e jardins bem tratados, encontramos o palácio dos últimos reis, de arquitectura colonial, que foi restaurado e abriga um museu que retrata o passado da Nação desde o século XV. O êxito alcançado não trava a ambição do Ruanda, que continua determinado a crescer e aposta no turismo como pilar de desenvolvimento. Com apenas 26.338 km2, mas repleto de motivos de interesse, este pequeno país quer tornar-se um gigante do turismo africano.

UMA HISTÓRIA ATRIBULADA Velho reino da região dos Grandes Lagos, o Ruanda foi sucessivamente colónia alemã e belga, até se tornar um protectorado das Nações Unidas após a II Guerra Mundial.

Em 1960, o país votou em referendo e transformou-se numa República, declarada independente em 1962. Porém, as velhas querelas entre os povos hutu e tutsi não permitiram que o Ruanda encontrasse a paz, e culminaram no conflito de 1994. Mas o pequeno país encravado no interior do Continente surpreendeu ao reerguer-se das cinzas e curando as feridas que pareciam condenadas a eternizar-se. Adaptou-se aos novos tempos e é hoje uma nação respeitada pelo seu progresso e um destino desejado pelos amantes de viagens. Paisagens de sonho, uma riquíssima fauna, uma cultura repleta de tradições e a hospitalidade dos ruandeses são argumentos que contribuem para esta recente fama, tal como a segurança. O Ruanda é hoje um país pacificado, surgindo na 14ª posição entre os 44 países da África Subsaariana no Índice Global de Paz de 2020. A TROUBLED HISTORY An old kingdom of the Great Lakes region, Rwanda was successively a German and Belgian colony until it became a UN protectorate after World War II. In 1960, the country voted in a referendum and became an independent republic in 1962. However, the old quarrels between the Hutu and Tutsi peoples did not allow Rwanda to find peace, culminating in the 1994 genocide. But the small country in the interior of Africa surprised everyone by rising from the ashes and healing the wounds that seemed doomed to become eternal. It has adapted to the new times and is today a nation respected for its progress and a destination desired by travel lovers. Dream landscapes, a rich fauna, a culture full of traditions and the hospitality of the Rwandans are arguments that contribute to this recent fame, as well as security. Rwanda is now a peaceful country, occupying the 14th place among the 44 Sub-Saharan African countries ranked in the Global Peace Index 2020. And the unity of Rwandans of all origins is well represented in “Umuganda” (“all united with one goal”), a commitment made on the last Saturday of every month, where all citizens come together to help clean up the country, making it one of the cleanest on the continent.

Com quase sete décadas de existência, conta no seu palmarés com vários campeonatos angolanos de futebol – incluindo um “Tetra” (1965-1968) e um “Tri” (2002-2004) – e duas Taças e três Supertaças de Angola, bem como participações em competições internacionais e vitórias

ounded on April 1, 1953 by a group of employees of the former DTA, Atlético Sport Aviação, the famous ASA, whose history is entwined with that of Angolan aviation, is one of Angola’s most celebrated sports clubs. Founded nearly seven decades ago, it has several Angolan football championships under its belt - including a “Tetra” (1965-1968) and a “Tri” (2002-2004) -, two Angolan Cups and three Super Cups, as well as participations in international competitions and victories in Angolan basketball and handball championships.

Começou a jogar futebol com 15 anos, “nos juniores do Sporting, antes de ir para o ASA”, onde fez, diz, “uma trajectória bonita”. “Era a melhor equipa de Angola e tive a sorte de fazer parte dela”.

O Comandante Prata praticou atletismo, jogou e foi árbitro de andebol, jogou basquetebol nos juniores do Ferrovia e ainda voleibol. Terminada a carreira de atleta, foi treinador e desempenhou vários cargos no dirigismo, tendo assumido a vice-presidência da Federação Angolana de Futebol e dirigido a delegação nacional ao Mundial de 2006. Recentemente, numa altura em que “já não queria ter nada que

ver com o dirigismo desportivo”, Rui Carreira e Hélder Preza lançaram-lhe o desafio para se candidatar à presidência do clube dos “Aviadores”. Assumiu a presidência em Junho passado e propõe-se a resgatar a antiga mística do clube movido, sobretudo, “pelos afectos” que o ligam ao mesmo.

Conta que a nova direcção encontrou o clube “com muitas dívidas, infra-estruturas muito danificadas, equipamentos obsoletos e sem patrocínios”. “O ASA está doente. Tem os pneus 40

Commander Prata practiced athletics, played and was a handball referee, played basketball in the juniors of Ferrovia and also volleyball. After finishing his career as an athlete, he was a coach and held several leadership positions, having assumed the vice-presidency of the Angolan Football Federation and headed the national delegation to the 2006 World Cup. Recently, at a time when “he no longer wanted anything to do with managing sports”, Rui Carreira and Hélder Preza chal-

ENTRE O DESPORTO E A AVIAÇÃO José Luís Prata, o novo “Comandante do ASA”, nasceu em Luanda, na Vila Alice, “muito perto do campo de aviação”, e lembra-se de “fugir de casa para ir para junto da vedação ver os aviões descolar e aterrar”.

Aos 15 anos era finalista do curso de montador electricista, quando o colega Domingos Inguila, que já jogava no ASA, o convenceu a ir para o clube. Um ano mais tarde, “ainda menino de calções e sapatilhas”, pediu emprego ao tenente-coronel Medina, então presidente da DTA, e foi admitido como operário de 3ª classe na Manutenção da companhia, onde desempenhou várias funções, chegando, por inerência, a dirigir a secção de Manutenção e Engenharia, na ausência do director. Dividia a vida entre o emprego, o futebol e os estudos, formando-se em Engenharia Técnica no Instituto Industrial de Luanda, e tirando os cursos de mecânico de voo e de piloto particular de aviões, no Aeroclube de Luan-

“O Comandante Rui Martins, que era o dono da Companhia de Táxis Aéreos, autorizou-me a fazer essas horas na companhia. Pilotava avionetas pequenas e transportava fazendeiros para os territórios mais distantes. Levava peças aos camionistas cujos camiões avariavam por Angola fora.

Seguíamos as cartas dos caminhos-de-ferro e da Junta Autónoma das Estradas e íamos à sua procura. Depois de localizá-los, verificava se havia carros na estrada para poder aterrar em segurança”, relembra com alguma nostalgia, a mesma com que recorda a relação de irmandade que então existia entre colegas: “Vivia-se de outra maneira.

Havia uma camaradagem que já não existe. E o ASA também ajudava. Estávamos imbuídos no apoio ao clube e isso criava uma ligação ainda mais forte, mesmo com os nossos superiores”.

Em 1972 completou o curso de Piloto Comercial de Aviões e ascendeu a uma função na Direcção de Operações de Voo (DOV), sendo responsável pelo planeamento e controlo operacional do voo, na companhia onde veio a desempenhar várias funções, numa carreira que acompanha a história da própria aviação angolana. “Na TAAG, fui nomeado director de operações por três vezes, e actualmente, administrador não executivo. Fui administrador da Angola Charter, fundei e fui presidente do Sindicato dos Pi-

To be a Commercial Airplane Pilot he needed to complete flight hours, which cost a fortune.

“Commander Rui Martins, who was the owner of the Air Taxi Company, authorized me to do

those hours in the Company. I piloted small airplanes and took farmers to the remotest parts of the country. I took parts to truck drivers whose trucks broke down all over Angola. We followed rail and road maps and went looking for them. After locating them, I would check whether there were any cars on the road in order to land safely”, he recalls with some nostalgia, the same with which he recalls the companionship that existed between colleagues at that time: “We lived differently. There was a fellowship that no longer exists.

O avanço tecnológico que se verificou no sector impressiona-o. “Passámos de uma aviação analógica para uma aviação digital, informática, muito sofisticada. E eu fiz essa transição”, reconhece.

O seu filho Miguel seguiu os seus passos. “Depois de terminar o curso de Engenharia Aeronáutica, tirou o de piloto, sendo um dos únicos profissionais da TAAG com esta formação”, conta com visível orgulho.

Para a aviação prevê um futuro risonho, “com o foco na redução de custos operacionais.

Com a tecnologia que se apregoa poderá mesmo evoluir para os voos sem piloto. É quase imprevisível”. Já quanto à TAAG, acredita que tem “projectos e programas de desenvolvimento bem definidos, o problema será estabelecer a estratégia para os cumprir”. “É um caminho a percorrer que passa pelo Executivo, pela gestão da companhia e pelos próprios trabalhadores. Mas acredito na direcção do meu país.

In 1972, he completed the Commercial Airplane Pilot course and rose to the position of Operational Flight Dispatcher (DOV), the pilot responsible for flight operational planning and control, in the company where he came to perform various functions, in a career that follows the history of Angolan aviation itself and beyond. “At TAAG, I was appointed director of operations three times, and administrator, currently non-executive.

I was administrator of Angola Charter, founded and was president of the Angola Pilots Union. I flew for 30 years as a pilot for the President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos...”, he recalls. The technological advances that have taken place in the sector impress him. “We have gone from analogical aviation to digital aviation, computer science, very sophisticated. And I made that transition”, he considers.

His son Miguel followed in his footsteps. “After finishing the Aeronautical Engineering course, he took the pilot course, being one of the only TAAG professionals with this combined training”, he tells with visible pride.

For aviation, he foresees a bright future, “with a focus on reducing operational costs, with the technology that’s being trumpeted, it could even evolve into pilotless flights”. As for TAAG, he believes it has “well defined development projects and programs.

The challenge is establishing the strategy to fulfil them”. “It’s a path that has to be walked by the Executive, by the company’s management and the workers themselves. But I believe in the direction of my country. We will win”.

Mesmo já no exterior, considera que permanecia em Angola, dada a espiritualidade que o caracteriza. Todavia, Waldemar Bastos não é só

IDENTIFICATION WITH ANGOLA Waldemar Bastos considered his music as a reflection of his own life and experiences, carrying his emotions, feelings, affirming his angolanity through messages and stories, using his melodious voice. It was important for him to work with Fontinhas (Malé), to use dikanza, national languages, the popular variety of Portuguese, metaphors and others, in a symbiosis between the traditional and the modern. His actions and options thus reveal his concern for national identity. He is an artist who must be an example for all musicians, so he must be publicized, sung and studied, so that can have the notion of the true dimension of his work and its meaning. However, for this to happen, we have to reflect very well on what is intended with official artistic training in An-

IDENTIFICAÇÃO COM ANGOLA Waldemar Bastos considerava a sua música como um reflexo da própria vida e das suas experiências, transportando para ela as suas emoções, os sentimentos, afirmando a sua angolanidade através de mensagens e histórias, usando a sua voz melodiosa. Foi importante para ele trabalhar com Fontinhas (Malé), usar a dikanza, as línguas nacionais, a variedade popular do português, as metáforas e outras, numa simbiose entre o tradicional e o moderno. As suas acções e opções revelam, deste modo, a sua preocupação com a identidade nacional. É um artista que deve ser um exemplo para todos os músicos, pelo que deve ser divulgado, cantado e estudado, para que se tenha a noção da verdadeira dimensão da sua obra e do seu significado. Todavia, para que tal aconteça tem de se reflectir muito bem sobre o que se pretende com a formação artística oficial em Angola. Actualmente, esta é feita numa perspectiva eurocêntrica, por ausência de alternativas, já que se recorreu a quadros e programas fora de África, que não valorizam a Etnomusicologia. Logo, não é de surpreender que os graduados por estas escolas estejam, em geral, a reproduzir

gola. Currently, this is done in a Eurocentric perspective, for lack of alternatives, since it resorted to staff, curricula and programs outside Africa, who do not value Ethnomusicology.

Therefore it is not surprising that the graduates of these schools are generally learning important knowledge but lagged in much of the Angolan reality. In this perspective, one understands the insistence of the researcher Jomo Fortunato in the creation of a Graduation in Angolan Studies. In the meantime, the dissemination of much of our endogenous knowledge and our artists will be postponed.

Some work of harmonization between our endogenous and exogenous knowledge, despite the misunderstandings, has

A Etnomusicologia, que não é valorizada no currículo da instituição superior angolana de música, é, no entanto, considerada por alguns investigadores como a disciplina que “aborda a música enquanto processo social e fenómeno cultural dinâmicos a partir de uma perspectiva multidisciplinar que integra conceitos da história da música, das ciências sociais, da linguística, da filosofia, da geografia humana e demais disciplinas do Homem, da cultura, e mesmo da física acústica e da biologia”. A música expressa a cultura de um povo e, por isso, a identificação dos angolanos com Waldemar Bastos é muito forte. É igualmente esperançoso e gratificante verificar que, apesar das incompreensões e obstáculos, alguns jovens assim o entendem. Os casos mais emblemáticos são o cantor Ndaka Yo Wine, o instrumentista Jorge Mulumba e até mesmo a Orquestra Camerata de Luanda constituída por jovens, com formação clássica que, a par de ministrarem aulas de música, executam clássicos angolanos, reproduzindo o sonho de Waldemar Bastos de interpretação de temas angolanos por uma orquestra.

• Morreu no dia 10 de Agosto de 2020 em Lisboa, aos 66 anos.

• Após a independência de Angola, em 1975, representou o país por várias vezes, viajando pela Polónia, Checoslováquia, Cuba e União Soviética.

• O disco “Preta Luz”, lançado em 1998, foi considerado pelo jornal norte-americano “New York Times” como um dos melhores da década de 1990 e foi referenciado por Tom Moon como um dos discos que temos de ouvir antes de morrer.

• Em 1999 foi galardoado com o prémio "New Artist of the Year" nos World Music Awards.

• Em 2008 foi distinguido com um Diploma de Membro Fundador da União Nacional dos Artistas e Compositores - Sociedade de Autores (UNAC-SA).

• Em 2014 foi uma das presenças nas comemorações dos 25 anos da queda do Muro de Berlim, a convite da chanceler alemã, Angela Merkel.

• Foi também o único não fadista a cantar na cerimónia de transladação do corpo de Amália Rodrigues, no Panteão Nacional, em Lisboa.

• Em 2018 foi-lhe outorgado o Prémio Nacional de Cultura e Artes.

• After Angola's independence, in 1975, he represented Angola several times traveling through Poland, Czechoslovakia, Cuba and the Soviet Union.

• The album “Preta Luz”, released in 1998, was considered by the American newspaper New York Times as one of the best of the 1990s and was referred to by Tom Moon as one of the records we have to listen to before we die.

• In 1999, he was awarded the New Artist of the Year award at the World Music Awards.

• In 2008 he was distinguished with a Founding Member Diploma from the Union of Artists and Composers of Angola.

• In 2014, it was one of the attendees at the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

• He was also the only non-fado singer to sing at the transfer ceremony, at the National Pantheon, in Lisbon, of the body of Amália Rodrigues.

• In 2018 he was awarded the National Culture and Arts Prize.

ra hora do regresso a casa. A lavra havia já ficado para trás, na margem do rio. Hoje o trabalho tinha sido muito cansativo e o homem ansiava por chegar.

Na última curva do caminho, os cães vieram, como habitualmente, esperá-lo, saltitando à sua volta, e foi então que o Velho apareceu. Coberto de farrapos, coxeando, com um ar cansado e olhar triste.

- Boa noite senhor…

- Boa noite, mais Velho. O que faz por aqui a esta hora? Nunca o vi na aldeia…

- Estou cansado, tenho os pés feridos e ainda não comi nada.

Vou para a próxima aldeia e a noite vem chegando.

- Pernoite na minha casa. Venha comer e tratar das feridas. (...)

t was time to return home. The farm was already behind him, by the river. The day’s work had been strenuous, and he was eager to return home.

On the last turn of the way, the dogs came out to greet him, as usual, gamboling around his legs. It was then that the Old Man appeared; ragged and limping, tired and sad eyes.

“Good evening sir…”

“Good evening Elder. What brings you to us at this hour? I’ve never seen you in the village…”

“I am tired, my feet ache and I haven’t had anything to eat. I’m on my way to the next village, but night falls.”

“Stay the night with us. We’ll give you something to eat and treat your wounds.” (...)

O Velho tinha chegado à aldeia ao fim da tarde.

Era uma aldeia próspera, de lavras férteis e celeiros cheios.

Mas tanta fartura e prosperidade pareciam ter endurecido o coração dos seus habitantes.

Começaram a desprezar os pobres, a desrespeitar os velhos, a olhar com desconfiança os forasteiros.

Os miúdos perseguiram, em gritaria, aquele velho homem que caminhava com grande dificuldade, as mulheres injuriaram-no e atiraram-lhe lixo.

Arrastando-se com um gemido a cada passo, o Velho saiu da aldeia e as palavras daquele homem que lhe surgiu na curva do caminho foram um bálsamo para as suas dores.

- A casa é pequena, mas dá para quem nos visita. A comida não é muita, mas chega para quem precisar – disse a mulher quando o marido lhe falou do forasteiro com quem se havia encontrado.

O Velho comeu, matou a sede e depois das feridas tratadas pediu que o deixassem descansar a um canto, no chão da casa.

- Em minha casa as visitas não dormem no chão. A nossa esteira está ali. Deite-se e descanse.

Os donos da casa estenderam uma manta no chão de terra e dormiram também.

A meio da noite o homem sentiu uma mão pousando sobre o seu ombro. Abriu os olhos e ouviu a voz do Velho murmurando: "Presta atenção ao que te digo, daqui a quatro dias uma nuvem negra irá aparecer, o dia ficará escuro como a noite. Arruma as tuas coisas e parte. Cairá uma chuva como nunca viste, como nunca ninguém viu nem verá jamais. A aldeia será engolida pelas águas e com ela a maldade dos seus habitantes".

De manhã, quando os donos da casa acordaram, a esteira estava vazia.

- Ouve, mulher, não sei se foi sonho mas, esta noite, ouvi o Velho a dizer-me que, daqui a quatro dias, uma nuvem negra irá aparecer e uma grande chuva arrasará a aldeia e todos os seus habitantes e disse-me para arrumar as nossas coisas e partir antes que a chuva comece… … e, ao quarto dia, surgiu no horizonte uma nuvem negra como a noite.

- O Velho tinha razão. Vamos partir para longe.

Mal se puseram a caminho em direcção à serra que se recortava ao longe, a chuva começou a cair. Cada vez mais forte, mais espessa, caiu durante uma semana e quando parou a aldeia tinha desaparecido.

Lenda? Realidade? Quem sabe. Mas, até hoje, os pescadores que pescam no lago dizem que, muitas vezes, lá do fundo, vem o som de um estranho canto. O ritmo de pés dançando, o bater dos pilões, mulheres conversando, crianças brincando.

Actualmente, os habitantes das margens do lago são gente pacífica e hospitaleira. São os descendentes de um casal que, há muitos anos, curou as feridas do corpo e da alma de um Velho faminto e doente, numa aldeia que a chuva cobriu para sempre.

The Old Man had arrived at the village at the end of the day.

It was a prosperous village of fertile farms and full granaries.

But all that bounty and prosperity seemed to have hardened the hearts of the villagers. They began to despise the poor, disrespect the elderly and mistrust strangers. The children chased and shouted at that old man who walked with great difficulty, the women insulted and threw trash at him.

Whimpering at every step, the Old Man had left the village and now the words of the man he met on the path felt like balsam on his wounds.

“My house is small, but we’ve room for visitors. Our food is not plenty, but enough to share with those in need,” said the wife when the husband told her of the stranger he had found.

The Old Man ate, slaked his thirst and after having his wounds attended, asked permission to rest in a corner of the house, on the ground.

“In my house guests do not sleep on the floor. There is our sleeping mat. Lie on it and rest.”

The owners of the house laid a blanket on the floor and also slept.

In the middle of the night the man felt a hand on his shoulder. He opened his eyes and

heard the Old Man’s voice whispering: “Pay attention to what I’m going to say. In four days, a dark cloud will appear in the sky and the day will turn as black as night. Gather your things and leave. There will be rain like you’ve never seen, like no one has ever seen and will ever see. The village will be swallowed by water and with it the evilness of the villagers”.

In the morning, when the couple woke up, the sleeping mat was empty.

“Listen wife, I don’t know if I dreamt it, but last night I heard the Old Man tell me that, in four days, a dark cloud will appear and a great big rain will wash away the village and everyone in it. He told me to gather our things and leave before the rain starts… … And, four days later, in the horizon loomed a cloud as black as night.

“The Old Man was right. Let’s go far away from here.”

As soon as they headed towards the distant hills, rain began to fall. Stronger and stronger, thicker and thicker for a whole week and when it stopped, the village was gone.

e o simples gesto de acender um candeeiro ou ligar um electrodoméstico parece banal para muitos de nós, em vastas zonas do planeta o acesso à electricidade e aos seus benefícios é ainda uma miragem. Fundada em 2015, a empresa suíça PowerBlox AG desenvolveu soluções inteligentes e inovadoras de fornecimento de energia, algumas delas apresentando-se como uma resposta para colmatar o problema das comunidades mais isoladas e levar até elas a electricidade que poderá alterar por completo a sua existência.

Apostando numa tecnologia de uso simplificado, acessível e barata, a PowerBlox criou uma invenção versátil que consiste num sistema de módulos que produzem e armazenam energia, funcionando a partir da electricidade da rede, de um gerador ou de energia solar. Estes módulos em forma de cubo funcionam sem necessidade de configuração, know how ou manutenção específicos, sendo facilmente operados pelos utilizadores após um breve treino. Associados a um aplicativo móvel, podem ainda

ser monitorizados remotamente pelas equipas da PowerBlox que, desta forma, também podem realizar correcções, embora a intenção seja a de que os utilizadores possam operá-los autonomamente. Dependendo das necessidades, estes cubos podem ser encaixados como peças de Lego, aumentando em capacidade e potência. Funcionando de forma independente, o mau funcionamento de um cubo não compromete o desempenho dos restantes.

Quando alimentados por energias renováveis podem fornecer electricidade sem prejudicar o meio ambiente, resultando assim numa arma para atingir um dos 17 Objectivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) da ONU, o de “assegurar o acesso confiável, sustentável, moderno e a preço acessível à energia para todos” até 2030. f the simple gesture of lighting a lamp or connecting a household appliance seems trivial to many of us, across vast areas of the planet having access to power and its advantages is still a mirage. Founded in 2015, the Swiss company PowerBlox AG has been developing intelligent and innovative energy supply solutions, some of which advance answers to the problem of taking electricity to remote communities, which could completely change their existence.

Betting on a technology that is simple, affordable and easy to use, PowerBlox has created a versatile invention consisting of a system of modules that produce and store energy, running on electricity from the grid, a generator or solar power. These cube modules work without specific configuration, know-how or maintenance and are easily operated by users after brief training. Linked to a mobile app, they can also be monitored remotely by PowerBlox teams for troubleshooting though the intention is for users to operate them autonomously.

Recentemente, e respondendo às necessidades criadas pela pandemia, foi lançado um kit de combate à Covid-19 que, adicionando um módulo de electrólise, permite a produção do desin-

A adaptação para a realidade angolana não foi, por isso, complicada.

NGOs, social projects and private companies that want to reduce their power costs or become representatives of PowerBlox are among those that have shown the greatest interest in these “magic cubes” that, powered by a solar panel, immediately electrify villages, medical 57

and police stations, schools or border posts. Recently, and responding to the needs created by the pandemic, a combat kit for Covid-19 was launched which, by adding an electrolysis module, allows the production of the disinfectant so necessary for the victory in this battle.

With a markedly African root, PowerBlox began to be developed by Alessandro Medici after several years working in Kenya, where he felt the need for a solution adaptable to the continent’s markets, which would be simple, low-maintenance and scalable.

Adapting to the Angolan reality was therefore not complicated.

“By bringing this technology to the country we are forming teams, enabling them to work in a clean, low-cost energy sector, which is recognized as the future of energy production”, continues Nuno Novais. “Our aim is to create a mix of partners that will allow us to take power to as many Angolans as possible”.

m termos globais, a produção de lixo assume proporções preocupantes, com a forma como os resíduos são tratados a ocupar as prioridades das autoridades. Em 2018, o relatório do Banco Mundial sobre este problema, “What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050”, estimava que os 7,6 biliões de pessoas que habitam a Terra produziam dois biliões de toneladas de resíduos por ano, e que, ao ritmo actual de crescimento, esse valor deveria aumentar em 70% até 2050, a menos que se tomassem medidas urgentes para evitar a catástrofe ambiental.

Se o aumento da população mundial pode estar na origem do problema, a solução passa, sobretudo, pela boa gestão de resíduos através de métodos amigos do meio ambiente. E a aposta nestas alternativas pode gerar elevados rendimentos.

In 2018, the World Bank report on this problem, “What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050”, estimated that the 7.6 billion people living on Earth produce 2 billion tons of waste per year and that at the current rate of population growth, this figure is expected to rise by 70% by 2050 unless urgent actions are taken to prevent environmental disaster.

If the increase in the world’s population can be at the root of the problem, the solution lies, above all, in good environmentally friendly waste management methods.

And investment in these alternatives can generate high returns.

In the last decades of the 20th century, consumerism has imposed itself all over the world promoting “linear economies” based on the paradigm of producing, using and throwing away, which consumes the planet’s resources and generates the waste that contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, among other forms of pollution. Despite the growing number of people advocating for “circular economies” focused on reusing, recycling and optimized energy utilization, promoting sustainable, healthy and inclusive environments, there is still much to be done and swift action is imperative.

From industrialized countries emerge effective methods and technologies for the intelligent treatment and recovery of waste, ranging from software-managed waste collection and separation to real-time waste monitoring, tools that help to convert an activity that has been neglected for years into sources of income.

Se nas vastas zonas rurais do continente muito do lixo gerado continua a ser naturalmente “reciclado”, quer por ser “amigo do ambiente”, quer através da reutilização, o seu volume é cada vez maior e nas zonas urbanas atinge proporções dramáticas, com mais de 80% do desperdício a não receber o tratamento adequado. Muitos desses resíduos mais prejudiciais ao ambiente, nomeadamente os plásticos, resultam das embalagens dos produtos exportados pelos países

em desenvolvimento sem as infra-estruturas necessárias para o processar, provocando a contaminação de solos e águas.

Mas o aumento previsto da população na região, a rápida urbanização e o crescimento económico são outros factores que farão aumentar o problema, que também poderá transformar-se numa fonte de rendimento, caso os responsáveis públicos ou privados comecem a explorar um dos negócios mais promissores do momento. Além dos aterros sanitários, que minimizam o efeito poluente dos resíduos,

While in the continent’s vast rural areas much of the waste generated continues to be naturally ‘recycled’, either by being ‘environmentally friendly’ or through reuse, its volume is increasing and in urban areas it reaches dramatic proportions, with over 80% of waste not receiving proper treatment.

A lot of the most environmentally damaging waste, such as plastics, result from the packaging of products exported from industrialized countries to Africa. Industrialized countries also produce the most plastic waste, with the United States (and companies like Coca Cola or Pepsico) leading the way and China and India also topping the list, according to the study “Solving Plastic Pollution: Transparency and Accountability” conducted in 2019 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). For years, much of this waste was “exported” to China. When the eastern giant refused to continue receiving it, it was sent to developing nations without the necessary infrastructure to process it, causing soil and water contamination.

But if the expected population increase in the region, rapid urbanization and economic growth are other factors that will increase the problem, they are also potential sources of revenue and employment if public or private officials start to exploit one of the most promising businesses of the moment.

In addition to landfills, which minimize the polluting effect of waste, composting (transformation of organic waste into compost that can serve as natural fertilizer), incineration (burning

A AMEAÇA ELECTRÓNICA Nos últimos anos, uma nova ameaça surgiu sob a forma de material electrónico descartado pelos países ricos, que exportam esse material altamente tóxico para nações em desenvolvimento. África tornou-se um dos principais destinos dessa exportação, depressa condenada pela Convenção de Basileia que, em 1989, tentou regular este trá-

fego, assim como pela União Europeia que, em 2003, adoptou uma directiva sobre a redução de substâncias nocivas utilizadas nos aparelhos e a obrigatoriedade da sua reciclagem na própria Europa.

No entanto, o chamado "E-waste" continua a chegar a África, enviado como “produtos em segunda mão”, como comprovou um estudo do “Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente”. Se parte desse material é reutilizado depois de recuperado, e se metais valiosos, como ouro, alumínio, cobre e prata encontrados em quantidades ínfimas nestes equipamentos se tornaram uma fonte de rendimento para “catadores especializados”, a verdade é que os produtos tóxicos libertados na queima do restante material emanam substâncias altamente nocivas.

PREOCUPAÇÕES NACIONAIS Em Angola, a gestão dos resíduos urbanos

revela-se complexa, com os passos para a sua resolução a serem dados lentamente.

Actualmente, e através de legislação própria, a Agência Nacional de Resíduos regula o tratamento dos mesmos, incluindo os lixos hospitalares e perigosos, mas há a necessidade de maior investimento para que este se transforme em algo sustentável e capaz de beneficiar as populações.

Em época de pandemia, avolumaram-se as preocupações, sobretudo quanto ao destino dos lixos hospitalares, com a Agência Nacional de Resíduos a informar sobre a tomada de medidas governativas para conter o vírus que possa estar presente nesses resíduos, como a utilização da incineradora no aterro dos Mulenvos. Por outro lado, as empresas privadas do sector multiplicaram os cuidados, implantando uma incineradora móvel no Calumbo para eliminar resíduos dos centros de quarentena.

THE ELECTRONIC THREAT In recent years, a new threat has emerged in the form of electronic material discarded by materially wealthy countries, which export this highly toxic material to developing nations. Africa has become one of the main destinations for this export, quickly condemned by the Basel Convention which, in 1989, tried to regulate this traffic, as well as by the European Union which, in 2003, adopted a directive on

the reduction of harmful substances used in appliances and the obligation to recycle them in Europe itself. However, the socalled E-waste continues to arrive in Africa, sent as second-hand products, as a study by the United Nations Environment Program has shown. If part of this material is reused after recovery, and if valuable metals such as gold, aluminum, copper and silver found in minute quantities in this equipment have become a source of income for “specialized waste pickers”, the truth is that the toxic products released in the burning of the remaining material release highly harmful substances.

NATIONAL CONCERNS In Angola, urban waste management is proving to be complex, with the steps to61

wards its resolution taken slowly. Currently, and through its own legislation, the National Waste Agency regulates the treatment of waste, including hospital and hazardous waste, but there is a need for greater investment to turn it into something sustainable and capable of benefiting the population.

In these times of pandemic, concerns have increased, especially regarding the destination of hospital waste, with the National Waste Agency reporting on government measures to contain the virus that may be present in this waste, such as the use of the incinerator in the Mulenvos landfill, while private companies in the sector have multiplied their care, implanting a mobile incinerator in Calumbo to eliminate waste from quarantine centers.

Se nos limitarmos a essa definição, podemos considerar os balões carregados de explosivos utilizados pelas tropas austríacas para “bombardear” a cidade de Veneza em 1849, muito antes dos primeiros aviões levantarem voo, como os antepassados das actuais máquinas voadoras que na última década se tornaram tão populares em todo o mundo. Se a “arma” inventada pelo jovem tenente Franz von Uchatius e utilizada no ataque não surtiu grande efeito, uma vez que os balões foram “devolvidos” por inesperadas correntes de ar e rebentaram sobre o exército austríaco, desde então o Homem voltou regularmente à ideia de

Entre as duas guerras, a Inglaterra colocou nos ares o Queen Bee (Abelha Rainha), uma aeronave de baixo custo e controlada por rádio, que servia de alvo nos treinos dos pilotos da artilharia anti-aérea. Já na Segunda Guerra Mundial multiplicaram-se os engenhos que adaptavam a nova tecnologia às necessidades militares. A Alemanha, por exemplo, terá lançado mais de um milhar de bombas V-1, os primeiros mísseis modernos dirigidos, também conhecidas como Buzz Bombs, pelo ruído que faziam ao voar. E poderá ter sido a partir destes nomes que surgiu o nome de “Drone”, a palavra inglesa para zangão, pelo qual agora os conhecemos. Nas décadas seguintes, e quase sempre com fins militares em vista, os drones foram sendo aperfeiçoados para missões de reconhecimento, vigilância e ataque, sendo hoje uma arma de guerra indispensável. No início da década de

1980, versões mais sofisticadas de drones israelitas terão sido usadas pelo exército sul-africano em combates contra Angola.

Em finais da década de 1970, o engenheiro espacial israelita Abraham Karem chegou aos Estados Unidos da América e dedicou-se ao desenvolvimento do drone moderno. Montou o Albatross, a mais desenvolvida versão até então, e embora garanta que “só queria que os veículos aéreos não tripulados operassem com os mesmos padrões de segurança, confiabilidade e desempenho que aviões tripulados”, ficou conhecido como o “pai dos drones”.

O imenso desenvolvimento tecnológico das últimas décadas não deixou de fora os drones, que já no século XXI começam a poder ser comandados através de radiofrequência, raios infra-vermelhos ou previamente programados por coordenadas fornecidas por sistemas de navegação por satélite.

Cientistas adivinham o potencial da utilização destes “veículos aéreos não tripulados” na pesquisa científica e em experiências várias, enquanto os mais pragmáticos lhes imaginam vantajosos fins comerciais e industriais.

Reconhecendo o potencial não militar desta tecnologia, a Administração Federal de Aviação norte-americana emitiu, em 2006, as primeiras licenças para a utilização comercial de drones, dando início a uma nova fase da sua história. Desenvolveram-se de acordo com a utilização

It was, however, in 1907 that the concept of the drone first emerged; a quadcopter created by inventors Jacques and Louis Bréguet and Nobel Prize winner Charles Richet, which needed four men to stabilize and rose only to the height of one meter.

During the First World War, a radio-controlled torpedo, the Kettering Bug, began to be developed by the US Army, but it was not used since the conflict ended before it was ready. Between the two wars, England put in the air the Queen Bee, a low-cost radio-controlled aircraft, which served as a target in the training of anti-aircraft artillery pilots. By the Second World War, there were a number of devices that adapted the technology to military needs. Germany, for example, launched over a thousand V-1 bombs, the first modern guided missiles, also known as Buzz Bombs, for the noise they made when flying. And it may these names that inspired the name “Drone”, the English word for male bee.

In the following decades, and nearly always for military purposes, drones were perfected for reconnaissance, surveillance and attack missions, and today they are an indispensable weapon of war.

By the early 1980s, sophisticated versions of Israeli-made drones are reported to have been used by the South African Defense Force during the armed conflict against Angola. In the late 1970s, Israeli space engineer Abraham Karem arrived in the United States and dedicated himself to developing the modern drone. He assembled the Alba-

SEGURANÇA EM PRIMEIRO LUGAR Apesar de cada vez mais seguros, os drones podem ser utilizados com intenções menos legítimas pelo que a sua utilização é regulada por legislação própria e Angola não é excepção. Para operarem legalmente em território nacional, todos os drones com peso superior a 250g devem estar credenciados pelo Ministério do Interior, no Departamento de Armas e Explosivos, e registados na Autoridade Nacional de Aviação Civil, devendo ser usados exclusivamente para a actividade para a qual se registaram. Necessitam ainda de ter o respectivo seguro. O utilizador deve frequentar um curso de pilotagem de drones (obrigatório no caso de aparelhos com mais de 25 kg), onde aprenderá a conhecer melhor o equipamento, a “ler” as condições meteorológicas antes de o utilizar, onde e como o fazer e onde não pode, de todo, fazê-lo (como são os casos dos aeroportos e arredores, áreas de segurança como redes eléctricas, prisões, centrais hidroeléctricas, redes de abastecimento de água ou gás, barragens ou represas ou radares de vigilância aérea, entre outras infra-estruturas).

SAFETY FIRST Although increasingly safe, drones can be used for less legitimate purposes, so their use is regulated by law and Angola is no exception. FORMA DE ADESÃO A adesão é simples, sendo que um aficcionado por aviação precisa de ter um simulador básico de voo em casa, que pode ser preparado através de um computador, comprar digitalmente o software de simulação de voo e as ferramentas de simulação ou hardwares para domínio e controlo da mesma. The Virtual Aviation is an artificial recreation of aviation through digital platforms that allow the simulation of scenarios, either flight, air traffic, aviation management and everything else that makes up the concept of aviation. TAAG Virtual is a virtual airline for users of FSX and Prepar3D that aims to simulate the administrative and operational structure of its real-life counterpart TAAG Angola Airlines, and to guarantee as much realism as possible within the limits of Flight Simulator. Its main objective is to bring together air simulation enthusiasts in Angola around a serious and professional project following the structure and procedures of our real counterpart TAAG Linhas Aéreas de Angola. TAAG Virtual offers its virtual pilots a modern concept of Virtual Airline adapted to all levels of experience in Flight Simulator. Some of its services and systems includes: realistic operating system with real destinations from the real counterpart and use of a complete fleet based on the real counterpart. REGRESSO AOS VOOS E BIOSSEGURANÇA RETURN OF THE FLIGHTS AND BIOSECURITY Como sabemos, os efeitos da Covid-19 têm sido devastadores para a economia mundial, reflectindo-se na indústria aeronáutica, com as companhias aéreas africanas a estimarem grandes perdas, segundo dados da IATA e da AFRAA. Surgindo de uma forma abrupta e inesperada, têm sido ensaiadas várias formas e medidas para a combater, mas a unanimidade inclina-se para o respeito pela biossegurança. Neste mar de incertezas e sofrimento, a aviação tem sido importante para o transporte de carga e voos humanitários para repatriamento de nacionais e estrangeiros residentes. A TAAG também tem sido chamada a realizar voos humanitários de passageiros e carga pelo Executivo angolano e tem sido intransigente em relação ao respeito pelas medidas de biossegurança. Na aviação, devido ao design especial do sistema de recirculação do ar da cabine (o ar na cabine circula de cima para baixo) e estando todas as aeronaves da TAAG equipadas com filtros HEPA-High Efficiency Recirculate Air Filter, que retém 99,9% das partículas existentes no ar da cabine, as possibilidades de transmissão a bordo são muito reduzidas, pelo que é um transporte seguro. Todavia, tanto os colaboradores como os passa-

geiros têm de cumprir a sua parte ao nível da prevenção, evitando, assim, que os aeroportos sejam espaços de propagação do vírus. As medidas são desconfortáveis mas o seu fim é salvar vidas. A TAAG já está a preparar o seu regresso aos voos comerciais, priorizando os voos domésticos.

As we know, the effects of Covid-19 have been devastating for the world economy, with the aviation industry being hardly hit and African airlines estimating large losses, according to data released by IATA and AFRAA. Coming abruptly and unexpectedly, various ways and measures to combat it have been tried, but there is a unanimous leaning towards respect for biosafety. In this sea of uncertainty and suffering, aviation has played an important role in the transportation of cargo and humanitarian flights for the repatriation of nationals and foreign residents.

TAAG has also been called upon by the Angolan Executive to conduct humanitarian passenger and cargo flights and has been uncompromising in its respect for biosecurity measures. In aviation, due

However, both employees and passengers have to do their part to prevent the virus from spreading at airports.

The measures are uncomfortable but their aim is to save lives. TAAG is already preparing its return to commercial flights, prioritizing domestic flights.
