Our professional Natanael's passion

Social Responsibility has not only been gaining strength in the corporate context, but is also becoming part of companies’ business strategies. The European Commission defined this term in the Green Paper (2001) as “the voluntary integration of social and environmental concerns by companies in their operations and interaction with other interested parties”.

An organization's social responsibility should reflect the impacts of its actions on the community, with ethical, transparent behavior that contributes to sustainability.

For Portonave, social responsibility is in its DNA. The Port Terminal was constructed in a way that meets the best practices in this regard, which guidelines includes values such as: valuing people, sustainability, integrity, commitment to excellence and focus on the customer. The Company, which completed 15 years of operation, had in recent years more than 1 million people involved in at least 70 initiatives related to social-environmental actions, throughout Navegantes.

Terms such as “ESG”, short for “Environmental, Social and Governance”, have become famous in our daily lives and increasingly influence investors’ decisions.

The Port of Navegantes promotes actions guided by the Company's mission, values and commitments, and developed or supported through tax deductions and direct investments. To outline this strategy, the Terminal, as a member of the SDG Movement in Santa Catarina, seeks to contribute to the achievement of the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), of the 2030 Agenda.

Providing the company's engagement with its stakeholders, aiming to positively impact their lives and contribute significantly to building a better, fairer world that provides more quality for future generations... This is what moves us!

NADAR : a partnership that works

Portonave and the NADAR project (Aquatic Center for Athletic and Rehabilitation Development), in Itajaí, expanded their partnership this year and now the project has an exclusive class for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and a life quality and health class for adults, supervised by a physiologist from the project and o ering monthly bioimpedance assessments to monitor the health conditions and physical development of children and adults, as well as guidance from a nutritionist from the institute. And it does not stop there. For this year, concerned about the children's nutritional condition, given the high energy demand that swimming requires and also the fact that many of the families do not have appropriate food conditions, Portonave and NADAR will o er children a daily snack.

According to the project's creator, Leandro Peixoto of activities to the city of Navegantes, o ering free swimming lessons to students from public schools, preferably from São Paulo district, which increased the number from 80 to 120 children.

“Today, 140 students atend in Navegantes and 4,874 in Itajaí, most of them in aquatic activities, from babies (1 year old) to seniors in water aerobics. Among the aquatic activity students, there are more than 250 professional athletes trained at NADAR, constituting the largest swimming team in Brazil”, says Peixoto.

training in Itajaí with the NADAR training group. He won dozens of state and southern Brazilian medals and is among the top three in Brazil in open water. He became an inspiration for his younger sister (Cecília), who today also is part of NADAR's basic competitive team.

“It is a very good project, with a great team. It is a high-performance sport and provides many opportunities.”

Leonardo started at NADAR social schools while his mother was practicing water aerobics. In 2022, he was Brazilian champion and world runner-up in the 50 m freestyle. He has already received a proposal for a full scholarship from a university in Texas, in the United States. In June, he will compete for a spot at the 2023 World Junior Championship.

“The NADAR Project is essential and very important; it helps many people. And sport has many benefits. My advice is that people start practicing as soon as possible.”

ICEPORT: the path from cargo to cold storage

Do you know how Iceport's cargo is stored? Who are the people involved in this process?

Iceport o ers solutions that integrate management and logistics in storage, road transport and reefer container

OVER 1,500 TRUCKS ARE RECEIVED MONTHLY FOR RECEIPT OR SHIPMENT THROUGH THE AUTOMATED COLD STORAGE ROOM INTEGRATED TO THE TERMINAL.

The cargo path begins at the entrance and exit yard, where the schedule is checked, and the truck is weighed and released to enter and leave Iceport.

Maikon Belmiro Delfino works as an assistant in the Quality Assurance Program (QAP). “The truck and/or container is opened and the goods are checked, then we measure the temperature at the front, middle and back of the container, in order to guarantee that all the cargo meets the standards of the relevant market. In the Chilean market, for example, the required temperature for loads is -18 degrees or colder,” he explains. In the case of shipment, the QAP also inspect the condition of the truck and/or container for loading cargo.

After the inspection, the cargo is transported on pallets by forklifts to the Iceport antechamber. Raquel Roze Leal is a forklift and pallet truck operator and explains the process. “In the antechamber, we use two handling equipment, the forklifts and pallet trucks to unload the container cargo, while the pedestrian pallet trucks are only used to move the pallets to the warehouse entrance stations”, she explains. The equipment mentioned by Raquel are powered by lithium battery, which o ers greater safety, durability and reliability in operations. She has been working at the port for 3 months and joined the team through Porto para Elas Program (Port for Women, free translation), developed by the Terminal, which seeks to o er opportunities in the segment for women.

When the operators position the cargo in the antechamber, the checkers verify the quantity, date of manufacture, expiration date, SIF (Federal Inspection Service) seal, code and batch. “If it is necessary to reinforce the stretch film packaging, replace the pallets or any other care for the cargo, these actions are carried out at this time. After check, the pallet is labeled”, says the load checker at Iceport,

Labeling starts the process of cargo traceability and operational flow. It is also mandatory for pallets to enter the chamber entrance stations, the “PIE” (Entry Inspection Station), equipment that checks the height, weight, side dimensions and conditions of the pallet platform, and whether or not it is suitable for storage in the cold room. If any non-conformity is found, the pallet must go to the reject table, where the problem will be indicated and must be resolved to proceed.

After checking, the pallet is stored using an automated system that reads the bar code, indicating the best storage position according to the parameters pre-established by the operations team. There are predefined areas and positions, always divided into groups, such as pork, beef, poultry meat, fruits and vegetables.

The Iceport has a static storage capacity of 16,000 positions and the loads are stored by six stacker cranes at a temperature of -25 degrees, and the cooling tunnels reach -35 degrees.

Iceport has Export authorization, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), to South Africa, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Russia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Paraguay, United Kingdom, European Union, Uruguay and other countries that do not have specific requirements. Every year, audits are carried out for certification renewals. In March, Iceport's halal certification was renewed by CDIAL (halal certifier).

In the Islamic religion, only “halal” cargo is considered appropriate for consumption. Operations are carried out on an exclusive, dedicated dock for receipt and dispatch of halal cargo, and all equipment used must be intended only for this type of goods, without contact with non-halal goods.

For cargo dispatch, the process is similar. The chamber's automated system transports the cargo to the antechamber through the exit tables – a conveyor belt; then, the forklift operators place the cargo for checking, as soon as the truck arrives according to its scheduled time window. When dispatch check is completed, the cargo is stored in the container.

This is the path for the cargo in the cold room, every day, with more than 100 workers involved from the Operations, Logistics and Maintenance departments.

It is an Arabic word that means “lawful, permitted”. A “Halal” certified-product is allowable or acceptable according to the values of the Islamic religion.

Ana Paula Martins de Souza, QAP assistant at the Iceport sanitary barrier for 5 years, explained that, “to entry into the chamber, it is necessary to change clothes and pass through the sanitary barrier to clean the hands and shoe soles. Hair must be completely tied up and covered, and it is not allowed to wear perfume, nail polish, makeup, among others. These are measures adopted to preserve the products. Laboratory control of equipment and infrastructure is carried out to ensure that there are no bacteria, such as salmonella.”

IN 2022, 220,696 TONS OF GOODS

Of these, 63.4% corresponded to animal-origin goods (frozen poultry, beef and pork) and 36.6% to vegetable-origin goods, mostly frozen potatoes. The transport of chickens represented 67.24% of the total of meat transported in 2022, and, of this total, 12.77% were halal goods.

“Being prepared to meet, with dynamism and speed, the different demands that arise unexpectedly over the days, for me, is the biggest challenge.”

“The biggest challenge for me was to implement, together with other areas, the requirements for ISO 37001 certification, since it is a complex, subjective, strategic issue that requires engagement from the entire company.”

“I believe that working as a team is key to ensuring that our deliveries are efficient and of high quality. While each has specific tasks, we strive to share information and keep everyone updated so we can support each other when needed.”

“Every day, we deal with a high flow of information from the most varied sources. We think from signing a document to the company’s legal strategy for acting in compliance with national regulations. And, in every action, we always try to give our best.”

Have you looked at you today?

How are you? Happy, frustrated, satisfied or sad?

Note that every day we experience many emotions, whether good and bad, but how we deal with them defines how our mental health is.

And this is important for our lives, because, whether at work and at home or with friends, feeling good about yourself will bring many happy moments.

Body and mind

In addition to this inner reflection, taking care of your body also helps us, and this is possible by practicing physical activity, proper nutrition, voluntary activities, laughing with friends...

See? There’s a lot of good things to do.

Our colleague Suellen, a few years ago, changed her life habits and began to benefit more from the so-called “happiness hormones”.

“Food and exercise are the two aspects that are directly linked to the production of hormones such as endorphins, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin, which are responsible for feeling good about yourself, vitality and satisfaction, which is why they are called happiness hormones, and in that sense, consequently improve my mental health. I also try to get quality sleep, with an appropriate amount of it, in addition to good hydration. I observe and admire the simple things in life, such as sunrises and sunsets, the moon, the sea, and whenever I find myself complaining, I try to replace the bad thought with one of gratitude; it has enormous power over our mental health.”

HOW ABOUT EXAMINING HOW YOU ARE LIVING AND STARTING TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO YOURSELF?

Here are super easy tips to practice from now on:

Don’t dwell on what you’re going to do next or what needs to be done. This is your moment.

you have too much to do in the same day, make a list based on what really is a priority.

Breathe.

Don’t think about what you’re going to answer or what you need to do.

It’s obvious that you’re breathing right now, but turn automatic breathing off. According to experts, the ideal ratio between inspiration and expiration should be one to two. And a more attentive and conscious breathing can bring more quality of life. Try it now.

SUELLEN ALSO BROUGHT BASIC TIPS, WHICH SHE PUT INTO PRACTICE AND WORKED VERY WELL:

• Feeding improvement happens little by little, but always keep in mind “peel more and unpack less”. “You don’t have to have a restrictive diet or stop eating all the things you like, but it’s important to have a conscious diet”, she says.

• Sleep at least seven hours a night and preferably before 10:30 pm.

• Connect with nature.

• Ingesting about 35 ml of water per kg of weight is what health professionals indicate.

• Have quality time with family.

When you feel anxious because
When you are in the bath, enjoy this moment.
When you are talking to someone, listen to that person.

Portonave women

A WOMAN’S PLACE IS IN THE PORT, IN THE TRUCK, IN THE OFFICE... IT’S WHEREVER SHE WANTS TO BE!

To mark International Women’s Day, we extended the date throughout the month. We had the slogan “We are Women, We are Port Women” as a campaign. Topics such as gender equality, women and the labor market, maternity and women’s health were addressed.

Women’s Month symbolizes numerous struggles and achievements, including more space and professional equality. In the port sector, the need to strengthen the presence of women is no different.

For the coordinator of Women’s Month actions and Human Resources (Diversity and Inclusion) analyst, Bianca Lima, “the purpose is to provide more and more opportunities and promote initiatives for them, increasing the number of women in the Terminal. The actions we are developing are intended to strengthen gender equality and equity, demonstrating that women have the opportunity to work both in the administrative and operational areas of the port sector”.

“The actions offer protagonism to women, in the sense of valuing and giving space for them to talk about topics aimed at all ages”, emphasizes the lecturer and career counselor, Lenir Nunes, who discussed about women, career and their many other roles, emphasizing the importance of women in corporate environments.

In order to offer more opportunities in the segment and strengthen gender equality, more diverse, equitable and inclusive teams, we are expanding our actions aimed at women in the region.

In 2022, we carried out the Port for Women Program (“Porto para Elas”), training 40 women in Logistics and Port Maintenance courses.

Among our professionals, actions are carried out as part of the Diversity and Inclusion program, such as: Maternity Support Program, Self Defense Training and Lectures in reference to Lilac August (violence against women). These are some of the initiatives for the promotion of gender equality and equity and are related to SDGs 5 and 16.

More life quality for our employees

Investing in health and life quality for our professionals is already a rule around here. All employees rely on sports advice, which is managed by our colleagues at our Outpatient Clinic, in order to start their physical activity routine with guidance and responsibility.

This year we have a new partner, Educative, which offers exclusive running and functional training classes, once a week, to our employees. The functional training takes place on the premises of the port and running, by the sea.

“Portonave is investing in quality of life. My tip is for everyone to take advantage of opportunities to improve their health for free.” Sidnei Almeida, physical instructor at Portonave, through the partner agency Dinâmica Gestão de Gente e Serviços

For those who don’t like functional training or running, they can participate in the bike ride, which takes place one Sunday a month and is open to family members.

In the port, we have lectures with a nutritionist and group nutritional assistance, both every two months. These groups have a predefined calendar and you just need to sign up to participate.

Are you interested and want to be part of this team? Get in touch with Sidnei Almeida or Flávia Matos, at the Outpatient Clinic.

More safety for everyone

An increasingly safe working environment is what makes us sure that we are taking care of our people. That is why we expanded the Alcohol and Drugs Policy, aiming at the individual and collective safety of our employees.

With this expansion, we will carry out not only breathalyzer tests (for alcoholism), but also tests for other drugs through urine samples, ensuring that there is no employee under the influence of alcohol and the main illicit drugs.

All employees are receiving training to update the new procedure, which will take effect as soon as the training has been completed. The meetings are held by properly trained professionals, in person, so that everyone can solve doubts and receive the booklet with all information, but access to the policy and work instructions can also be done through the platform of the Corporate Management System.

If you still don’t have the booklet, just contact HR to request yours!

Together for continuous improvement!

The Observation and Improvement Card program promotes the participation of employees with suggestions for improvements and their implementation at Portonave. Suggestions may focus at the safety, environment and well-being of the employees, and optimizing the quality and productivity of the most diverse company processes.

Since the program restructuring in July 2022, more than 318 cards were received until March 2023.

The program recognizes and rewards the best suggestions for improvements based on pre-established criteria.

Every month, the Card Evaluation Committee, formed by members of the IMS, Occupational Safety and other areas involved, meets to define the best suggestions and how they will be forwarded and implemented.

Gustavo Aparecido de Daurélio Rodrigues, reefer assistant, was awarded in the program for his improvement suggestion of identifying the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with the employees’ registration info, so that, in case of loss, they can be returned easily. “The best thing about this program is the feedback, and everyone has won, both the company and the employee, who benefit from the improvements”, he says.

Luiz Ondino da Silva Júnior, mechanical maintenance inspector, was also another winner of the monthly card award. Luiz proposed replacing the Terminal’s conventional synthetic sponges with biodegradable sponges. A suggestion that is outside his scope of work, but contributes to the environment.

“In the beginning, it may even be a little harder than the other, but over time it becomes as good as the conventional one, and brings great benefits to the environment, especially to fishes, which confuse the particles of the common sponge with food”, he explains.

Discover the benefits of biodegradable sponge

• It is composed of cellulose (yellow side) and natural coconut fibers (brown side), materials that are biodegradable in a short time;

• Avoids the use of plastic materials and replaces them with biodegradable materials for a short useful life item;

• Does not scratch your cutlery, plates and pans;

• It contributes to and promotes sustainable solutions that directly impact the environment and, consequently, all living beings.

How about you? Have you ever stopped to think about what can be improved at the Company? Register your suggestion on the Observation and Improvement Card online, via the SMS (Shared Management System), or by writing it on the cards available on displays in the Terminal. Thinking about improving the Company also means thinking about others and our role as professionals.

The reefer monitoring teams are the ones that send the most suggestions through the cards: of the 318 cards received in less than a year, 70 cards were delivered by them. Hussam Mohamed, leader of the reefer monitoring teams, encourages participation in the program and reinforces the leader’s role. “We can guide and encourage the team, help them see the bigger picture, and exchange ideas on suggestions for improvement. In some cases, projects are carried out jointly.”

Passion for psychology

Natanael Jotar Santos has been working at Portonave for 10 years. He began his career at the Terminal in 2013, at Iceport, and after 1 year and 2 months, he was promoted to Port Handling Assistant.

Two years ago, he started a Psychology course out of curiosity and ended up discovering a passion. For Natanael, being able to help people is very rewarding and seeing the change happening in the patient is an extra motivation.

For him, being a psychologist means more than a profession.

“What motivates us to enter Psychology is the feeling, the desire to get to know the other. It is a different experience from the medical issue, in which we see the physical result. In psychology, the outcome happens inside,” he explains.

He says that, in order to be successful in the practice of Psychology, it depends on the patient’s permission.

“Our work depends on acceptance. The permission to enter the world of the other person and making the necessary interventions and then leaving. We need the other to accept us in their world. That is one of the biggest motivations.”

“There is a phrase that says that we do not choose Psychology, Psychology chooses us, and it was different for me.”

To reconcile his new career with his work at Portonave, Natanael conducts therapy sessions by appointment, which last around 50 minutes. The sessions can take place weekly or every 15 days, depending on the patient’s need. Emotional issues involving depression, anguish and suffering are treated in these sessions.

With the growth of the city of Navegantes, coworking rooms – rooms or stations that can be rented for appointments at specific times, also appeared, which facilitated Natanael’s work. The Ser Mais clinic is where the sessions take place.

And he doesn’t stop specializing. To better understand the subject, he also graduated in Human Sexuality and an MBA in Strategic People Management. Currently, Natanael is studying Theory in Lacanian Psychoanalysis and Legal Psychology.

This edition is a voluntary production of Álvaro José de Souza. You can also appear here with suggestions for articles and subjects that you consider important to you and your colleagues. Please send an email to comunicacao@portonave.com.br.
