MARKET INTELLIGENCE AND ITS RELEVANCE IN THE PORT WORLD

“The Brazilian port industry is experiencing an environment of extreme competition, owing to investments in streamlining and improvement of port facilities by foreign and domestic companies, with a focus on safety, productivity, level of service, and satisfaction of customers and users.”

We can refer to Market Intelligence (MI) as the cluster of raw data from assorted sources for a meaningful polishing that turns it into valuable information for the business, targeted at boosting the sales of a given service/product and also supporting stakeholders’ decision-making. This is a broad area that has been gaining momentum over the past few years, mainly as a result of technological developments in data processing, creation of new information technology tools, to name a few.

Several activities guide MI, such as market segmentation, mapping, triangulation, and customer monitoring (Farmer and Hunter concepts), domestic and international analyses of the economic scenario, competition, and business trends, as well as the use of administration tools such as SWOT and benchmarking.

Thus, based on all conclusions made by reviewing information acquired from the data processing from the most diverse

sources, on a wide array of subjects and that, in some way, may impact the business, the MI professional is able to predict and design scenarios.

The Brazilian port industry is experiencing an environment of extreme competition, owing to investments in streamlining and improvement of port facilities by foreign and domestic companies, with a focus on safety, productivity, level of service, and satisfaction of customers and users. Data from ANTAQ (National Waterway Transport Agency) show that from 2011 to 2021 there was a growth of 49.4% in TEU volumes (measure equivalent to a 20-foot container), handled in Brazilian ports and terminals.

In such a competitive environment, Market Intelligence is an extremely important tool that, besides enabling more assertive efforts in business management and increasing sales, brings to light the need for innovation, to think “outside the box,” to all players in the industry.

Terminal strengthens port security with new drones

To allow improved efficiency, agility, and productivity in safety and environmental operations, Portonave purchased two new high-tech drones. The devices are used daily for monitoring, recording, and inspection of cargoes.

The Security Operations Control Center (CCOS) team is in charge of operating and offering equipment training to the entire Security team.

According to the Port Security supervisor, Ademir Sulczinski, “the investment is extremely important, as it is effective in critical scenarios, helping monitoring and controlling

activities. The growing technology motivates us to always keep up to date, thus drone is the perfect tool.”

Regarding the equipment’s range capacity, they can reach 18 km in distance and up to 120 m in height, the limit allowed by the Brazilian laws, in addition to also operating at nights.

As for performance, devices are annually tested in drills by CESPORTOS (State Commission for Public Safety in Ports, Terminals, and Navigable Ports in Santa Catarina), and monthly in internal drills.

Drone in Engineering

Since 2018, Portonave Engineering department has been using drones for topography (research of the earth’s surface), inspections of civil constructions, and monitoring of works. Nonetheless, equipment purchased is top-notch and has more batteries. Altogether, the two drones can operate with up to 5 hours of autonomy.

Portonave’s Integrated Management System combines routines and good practices

“...Portonave’s SGI is all the people, processes, and systems that make up the company. All routines or ideas, whether projects or small improvements, go through the systematics defined in the management system at some point.”

Express: Which are the roles and efforts performed by the Integrated Management System area?

Carlos: Today, the SGI area operates on five work fronts: Strategic Planning, Standards/Certifications/Qualifications, Lean Thinking, Projects, and Innovation. These themes directly pertain to Portonave’s strategic goals and are aimed to ensure the sustainability of the business, through the development of actions focused on governance, environmental, and social aspects.

Express: How do SGI efforts interfere in the routine of professionals?

Carlos: We usually say that the Integrated Management System is the name of our area, but that Portonave’s SGI is all the people, processes, and systems that make up the company. All routines or ideas, whether projects or small improvements, go through the systematics defined in the management system at some point. From the moment a person is hired to work in the company, they are subjected to procedures defined in the management system, are oriented to perform activities set out in instructions or systematics framed in SGI and trained based on the documents and information also managed in the system.

Express: How does the alignment of efforts with SGI impact on the results and on the daily lives of the teams and Portonave?

Carlos: Both routine and strategic efforts defined in the Integrated Management System directly influence Portonave’s results. Compliance with procedures is key for a fault-free

Responsible for an interactive, integrated system in constant communication, Portonave’s Integrated Management System (SGI) allows transparency and continuous improvement of the company’s processes, ensuring compliance with internationally recognized standards. operation, for instance. Or also, the good performance of the projects defined in the Strategic Planning can stand as competitive edges to be offered to customers. The company’s actions are defined in SGI and people provide the necessary drive to keep the company active, meanwhile changing whatever is needed in all areas of integrated management.

Express: Which are the main achievements of SGI and what is new in the coming months?

Carlos: An important achievement this year was ADVB’s recognition of ISO 37001 – Anti-Bribery Management System certification case. We are the first container port terminal in Brazil to receive this certification and this award tops off the efforts of all professionals. Also noteworthy are the positive outcomes of the audits carried out by customers in 2022, where the quality of services provided by the terminal and the chamber was always attested. Later this year, we are seeking ISO 9001 certification for Iceport, recertification in ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards. and maintenance of ISO 37001 at Portonave. Other works that will be carried out in the coming months revolve around the themes of Lean Thinking and Innovation.

Express: As a manager, how do you see the engagement and work of the team?

Carlos: The engagement and work of the SGI team are reasons for pride for me and I’m sure for the company as well. Professionals working in this area are always looking for a better way to serve and support the management group and other colleagues in the development of best practices. I am grateful to be able to work with these people on a daily basis.

ICEPORT ENDS 1 YEAR WITHOUT LOST-TIME ACCIDENTS

More than 100 professionals who, day after day, dedicate themselves to carrying out their activities with safety, commitment, and efficiency. These are the professionals at Iceport, Portonave’s cold storage and antechamber, who brought about a very important achievement for the Terminal in November: the milestone of a year without lost-time accidents. Overall, there have been more than 380 consecutive days.

For Iceport’s Operations manager, Bruno Vargas, the search for achievement is constant and linked to the strong culture of safe practices in the company. Safety is a daily, priority, and capital matter that makes professionals feel valued and able to do their best.

He comments, “when we work together towards a single goal, with the commitment, dedication, and awareness of the entire team, good results are achieved. This outcome demonstrates that collective efforts work in a positive way, allowing the wellbeing of everyone. Congratulations to the team once again for the excellent milestone!”

Safety First

Several security measures are carried out for Iceport’s safety, such as “personalized” training, that is, totally focused on the reality of cold storage and antechamber operation. According to Ariel Azevedo, Occupational Safety technician, the training focuses on the professionals’ day-to-day work, assessing their risk perception.

There are also General Meetings, held daily by those responsible for each area, with the aim of underlining safety guidelines. Besides the Internal Commission for Accident Prevention (CIPA), reshaped every year at Iceport and Portonave.

Iceport in Figures

Iceport stands out for its capacity to position 16,000 pallets in an area of 50,000 square meters.

More than 187,000 tons of cargo were handled from January to October, 64% accounting for the export of poultry and pork animal protein, and 36% for the import of frozen potatoes, onion rings, and frozen vegetables.

Goods are received and shipped at the docks. Overall, Iceport has 13 docks and six stacker cranes that store cargo in the antechamber, refrigerated down to -35 degrees Celsius.

Brazilian Cold Chain Congress

In October, Iceport participated in the Brazilian Congress of the Cold Chain, in São Paulo, along with other companies in the refrigerated logistics industry. At the meeting, which takes place annually, new technologies, trends, the market, and other topics relevant to the business were discussed. In addition to the congress, the contest Líder do Futuro (Leader of the Future) was held, an award that the Global Cold Chain Alliance Brasil (GCCA Brasil) grants to young professionals who stand out in the Brazilian refrigerated storage industry. In this edition, Iceport’s Operations manager, Bruno Vargas, joined the judging team, alongside Patrick Pimentel, from Friovale, and Dannieli Leite, from Cap Logística Frigorificado.

PORTONAVE HAS FIRST CLASS OF WOMEN TRAINED IN PORT MAINTENANCE AND LOGISTICS

The Porto para Elas (Portonave for Women) program trained 40 students in introductory courses in Port Logistics and Port Maintenance in November. With a view to teaching, furthering, and offering opportunities in the port industry for women, the courses started in September in concert with the institutions Podium and Assesoritec, in the City of Itajaí, State of Santa Catarina.

Classes were taught theoretically and practically using simulators and technical visits to the Terminal. In addition, the program also aims to offer opportunities to enter the job market, according to jobs available at Portonave.

According to Portonave’s HR supervisor, Josiani Bittencourt, the program Porto para Elas started as an initiative to increase the number of women in the port industry, especially for operation and maintenance. “The idea of offering training courses came about because we noticed that we didn’t receive many applications from women for these areas of activity. By training professionals in the local community, we can also contribute to the increase of women in other companies in the region, strengthening female inclusion in this market,” she asserts.

In this first edition, over 700 registrations were received. The purpose is to provide more jobs for candidates on the waiting list, in new groups, scheduled for the first half of 2023. Even before the conclusion of this edition’s course, two students had already been hired by Portonave.
