at All Saints Lent follows Epiphany, just as Jesus’ trials in the wilderness follow his baptism. For the Church, traditionally, Lent focusses on the reconciliation of those who have been excluded from the Church’s fellowship for apostasy or serious faults. This history explains the characteristic notes of Lent – selfexamination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for Easter.

Now is the healing time decreed for sins of heart and word and deed, when we in humble fear record the wrong that we have done the Lord. (Latin, before 12th century) The whole Christian community is invited to a process of study and repentance, the extension of which over forty days reminds us of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tested by Satan.

This Lent you are invited to prepare either with a course that Helen Willey will be facilitating or a course Vicar Rachel will be facilitating.

The course that Helen is hosting is starting Feb 25th and it is based on Desmond Tutu's book "In God's Hands", which is the Archbishop Welby's recommended Lent book Week 1: Week 2: Week 3: Week 4: Week 5: Week 6

Lent begins, as it did for us, on Ash Wednesday. Our young people were encouraged to attend before their half-term special Youth Group gathering. As the children who do not normally attend church greeted young people who had attended this service curiosity led our church children to explain the significance of this action by our Christian Community.

Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence; from the middle ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross.

Churches are kept bare of flowers and decoration. You will see very plain vestments in this period. The Gloria in excelsis is not used. The Fourth Sunday of Lent is allowed as a day of relief from the rigour of Lent and is the background to the modern observance of Mothering Sunday on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. This is when we will have our All Together service for March.

As Holy Week approaches, the atmosphere of the season darkens; the readings begin to anticipate the story of Christ’s suffering and death, and the reading of the Passion Narrative gives to the Fifth Sunday its name of Passion Sunday. At Easter we feel ready, because of the preparation we have undergone, to experience again the joy at the heart of our faith: the Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour. You are invited to journey with us this Lent.

4th Sunday (except July, August & December): Everyone is welcome! You are also all welcome (especially singers and musicians!) to join informal practice from 5.45pm onwards, before the prayer.

Taizé prayer is a prayer of simple meditative songs from Taizé. It includes a period of silence and short intercessions. The prayer space is laid out using candles and icons – a mat and prayer cushions are available for those who prefer to kneel or sit on the floor. Brother Roger founded the Taize Community -‘where love would be at the heart of everything’ over 50 years ago. The community today consists of around 100 brothers from Catholic and various Protestant backgrounds. Some of the brothers live outside Taize to be witnesses of peace and to try to share the living conditions of those who surround them, in poor areas of the world. Since 1957 Taize has welcomed tens of thousands of (mostly young) adults from around the world, to take part in week-long meetings centred on the ‘wellsprings of faith’. Three times each day, everyone goes to the ‘Church of Reconciliation’ for the common prayer, which is known for its songs of simple phrases sung over and over again, and times of silence, in God’s presence. The brothers do not accept gifts or donations for themselves. They earn their living and share with others only by their own work.

You will have noticed a few changes to the appearance of the church as we have entered the season of Lent: The altar frontal and robes are ash coloured unbleached linen, the cross is covered and even the alabaster wall panels are concealed behind linen curtains. Flowers have disappeared.

What is Going On?

You will have noticed a few changes to the appearance of the church as we have entered the season of Lent: The altar frontal and robes are ash coloured unbleached linen, the cross is covered and even the alabaster wall panels are concealed behind linen curtains. Flowers have disappeared.

What is Going On? Lent is a time of penitence, self-reflection and, as we draw closer to Holy week, increasingly a time of mourning as we walk with Christ through his suffering and death.

The unbleached linen and covering that you see is called “The Lenten Array” in the “Sarum or English Tradition”. Many churches use purple in Lent, the penitential colour, (but a later Roman Catholic addition), but some, like ourselves, use the unbleached linen, marked with the symbols of Christ’s Passion. The linen gives a clean, simple appearance, reflecting our need for undistracted prayer and meditation.

The Cross is covered but not removed: you might say it is more apparent to us hidden: so we are drawn to it and what it represents for us: Christ’s suffering and our redemption.

On Maundy Thursday, as we recall The Last Supper and Christ’s arrest in The Garden of Gethsemane, the altar will be stripped of all coverings and left bare, as desolate as the disciples left alone that night.

So The Lenten Array and the bare altar of Good Friday, are visual symbols for what is happening to us as we work through Lent and what happened to Jesus in the last weeks. At the Service of Light on Easter Eve, the church will burst back into life and splendour as the altar is redressed in gold and we sing The Gloria to celebrate The Resurrection.

What are we doing in Lent?

40 DAYS (is it possible to put the number 40 in big numbers with days underneath?)

40 is a symbolic number in The Bible (mentioned 146 times), inferring a time of testing: it rained on the Ark for 40 days & 40 nights, Moses & the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, and…

Jesus went into the desert for 40 days before beginning his teaching.

Strictly there are more than 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Eve, but we can exclude Sundays as they are always a celebration. (Which is good news if you have decided to “give something up” like coffee or chocolate, as you can indulge if you wish on Sundays!)

Easter Day became the customary day in the early church to baptise new believers. The baptism candidates went into a period of study and fasting to prepare themselves, and it became usual for the church family around them to join them on their journey of preparation. Last year, we very much mirrored this by holding our service of Confirmation on Easter Day.

Today, Lent is still a penitential season in the church year, but how should we approach it?

As spring cleaning for the soul? “giving up” denying ourselves something in solidarity with Jesus in the desert?

Doing something extra: a good deed, helping someone who needs support?

It can be all of the above.

It might help to see it as a journey to bring ourselves closer to God: How we do that is up to us, but it could be: abstaining from bad habits and taking on a new good habit that we continue with after Lent.

Especially good spiritual habits: • So maybe, if we find it hard to get into a habit of regular prayer time at home, we could set aside just 10 minutes at a convenient time to be quiet in God’s presence.

And there’s an app for that (yes seriously): try prayeveryday • Perhaps we’re not yet reading The Bible regularly, so we could set ourselves the habit to read a chapter from a Gospel each day.

• Holy Week: read, pray & meditate on The Gospel accounts of The Passion: Matthew ch. 26-28; Mark ch. 14-16; Luke ch. 22-24; John ch .13-21.

• Attend our Lent Group as “something extra”: going deeper with God. • Consider relationships: are there any needing us to seek or offer forgiveness?

Lent disciplines should include some outreach, some practical actions: • There are online resources for daily Lent activities & reflections: Try Christian Aid: Count Your Blessings: daily children & adult Lent activities. Church Urban Fund: daily activities • Contribute to the FoodBank collection each week • Buy Fairtrade • Give to a charity appeal or become a sponsor for EFIG Whatever we do, remember our aim in Lent, is to strengthen our faith with good spiritual disciplines that we can absorb into our daily life going forward.

So, then, Lent is not just for Lent ….

“Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to enable you to live in the way of Jesus.” (Church of England) If you are not yet confirmed, you might pray and reflect over the next few months, whether you might be ready to publicly affirm your faith. You are invited to discuss this with Vicar Rachel. And you have plenty of time, so there is no need to rush!

There is no “right” age for confirmation: people come to faith at any age or stage of life. For a young person, however, it is important that they are of an age to be clearly able to make their own independent decision, generally thought to be at least school year 6 or above.

Before confirmation, you must previously have been baptised into The Church of England or an affiliated denomination. If you have not been baptised, you will be baptised either before or in The Confirmation Service.

There will be a preparation course, details to be announced later on.

If you are unsure whether you are ready for confirmation, you might attend the course without any prior commitment to take it further, and if you are already confirmed, perhaps when you were very young, you might consider attending for refreshment and to support the new candidates. There will be separate groups for young people and adults.

ALLTOGETHER WORSHIP For MOTHERING SUNDAY March 15th @ 10.30am.

On Sunday March 15th, along with Christians around the world, we will celebrate Mothering Sunday with our Alltogether Worship at 10.30am, when we will remember and honour our mothers, and thank God for his allembracing love for us that transcends even that of our parents.

Mothering Sunday emerged in The Middle Ages when it became customary on the fourth Sunday of Lent for parish churches to make pilgrimage to their “mother Church”, frequently the cathedral or abbey. Our “mother church” is St. Paul’s Cathedral.

By the 16c it was customary for children as young even as 10 to be sent away into service with another household. And this Mothering Sunday became also a day off for them when they might reunite with family, even at the mother church if not at home, picking flowers from along the wayside as they walked to give as a gift.

So Mothering Sunday was about God, homecoming and family.

As the mid-point of Lent, it also became “Refreshment Sunday” when the strict Lenten fasting might be relaxed, (if you are abstaining from something for Lent, you might permit yourself a day off too, if you are not already taking each Sunday off).

Out of this, came the custom to take a cake home: this was usually a fruit & marzipan cake (un-iced due to Lent fasting) & easy to transport. This cake we would know as a Simnel Cake, “I’ll to thee a Simnel bring, Gainst thou go’st a Mothering,” wrote the celebratory poet Robert Herrick in the mid 17th-century.

We might think of it as an Easter cake, as it is often decorated with 11 marzipan balls for the 11 faithful disciples, and eaten at Easter!

At All Saints we often have simnel cake with coffee after the Easter Day service, and Alec, our previous retired priest, would enjoy declaring every year that we should have eaten it on Mothering Sunday!!

So, this year….in your honour Alec, now in Largs All Saints will do Simnel Cake on Mothering Sunday!!

DIARY OF AN ORDINAND The recent sermon we had on the day of Paul’s conversion put me in mind of a trip to Rome that I took last year with other members of my Theological College, St Mellitus. Naturally, we took in all the usual sights and had the privilege of going St underneath St Peter’s and also had the also privilege of going underneath Peter’s Basilica to see the seealso thespent tombmuch of St Peter himself. WePaul’s also tomb of St Peter Basilica himself.toWe time considering spent on much considering ministry and part his effect ministry and his effect thetime Christian Church.Paul’s We walked along of Christian Church. the Appian Way, on thethe major road from the South into Rome and which Paul travelled along on his way from Capua to Rome. It occurred to some of us to be incredibley grateful to Paul for going to Rome as without him doing so, we might not have become Christians. We also attended a moving and thought-provoking Mass at the Papal Basilica of St Paul Without the Walls (meaning outside the Walls not without walls!) This Basilica was founded by the Roman Emperor Constantine 1 over the burial place of Saint Paul and indeed, his tomb is there today. The Basilica was extensively modified under Gregory the Great in the late 6th/early 7th Century and in subsequent eras. It is very beautiful and if you have an opportunity to go to Rome, I would recommend that you make some time to go there.

The place that spoke to me most, however, was somewhat different. We had been given some free time to ourselves one day and were told to meet outside a 17th century minor basilica in the busy shopping district of Via del Corso, the Basilica of Santa Maria in Via Lata. We met there at the appointed time, waited for our guide and then went inside. We were directed to a small stone staircase leading underground where we found ourselves in the remains of a large ancient Roman structure broken up into small rooms. We were then told by the guide that this was likely to be the place where Paul spent two years whilst under house arrest, All Saints Newsletter 03.2015

waiting for his trial, in the years AD 60-62. I was stunned. It was one of those moments when God’s time and space collides with our own and we are left reeling. I couldn’t believe it! I was actually standing on the same stones as those on which Paul was likely to have stood. The walls that I touched could have been touched by Paul!

We were then told that the “prison epistles” (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon) were written in those two years whilst he was imprisoned and very likely here. Suddenly, I felt ashamed – ashamed of the way that we had stood outside, leaning on the walls of this ancient Basilica, chatting and laughing and eating Italian icecream in the hot sunshine whilst waiting for our guide and how we had clattered down the stone staircase to where we were now standing, without a thought for the holy place in which we found ourselves. The words of Jesus in Luke’s Gospel came to me “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do” and I made a silent prayer asking for forgiveness for my thoughtlessness.

The room in which we stood contained a small free-standing ancient column which had a cross incised on it, and a spiral inscription that reads: Verbum Dei non est alligatum ("The word of God is not bound"). There were marks of rust on the column indicating that it once had an iron chain wrapped around it and we were told that the chain was found in the adjacent well in 2010. The well is thought to be the one Paul used for baptisms. It still contained water.

We stayed and prayed in the room for a short while before leaving and as we came back outside into the daylight, one member of the group just said “Wow!” As we walked back to our lodgings, it occurred to me that that expression summed up everything we had just experienced – Wow! FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT IS ON!!

All Saints is a Fairtrade registered church, which means that our church council voted to support Fairtrade by serving Fairtrade tea, coffee etc, promoting Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight, and campaigning for social justice in the world. The Diocese of London achieved Fairtrade status in 2012, once more than 50% of its parish churches (like us) became Fairtrade. Lots of us went up to St Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate. There is a photo of our group on The Diocese Fairtrade page.

Fairtrade ensures that the poorest of the world’s producers, growing staple crops like coffee, tea, sugar and cocoa, are paid a fair price for their crop.

Not much to ask you might think: but the farmers only achieve that price on the proportion of their harvest that is purchased on Fairtrade terms…which is where we come in: the more Fairtrade we buy in our supermarkets here, the more is bought from the producers.

Out of the 80 million chocolate Easter eggs sold each year in the UK, The Real Easter Egg is the first and only chocolate Easter egg to explain the Christian understanding of Easter, and it’s Fairtrade too!

The Meaningful Chocolate Company that make the eggs, also give a sizeable donation from profits and Fairtrade Premium fees, to their farmers allowing them to invest in their community: buying everything from school books and solar panels to providing fresh water.

The real Easter Egg is now in its fourth year of production with more than 400,000 sold so far: and All Saints has offered them every year.

The eggs will be available closer to Easter at ÂŁ4 each, from The Fairtrade stall. The 2015 edition has a new 24 page Easter storybook with a 3ft Happy Easter Banner, a high quality milk chocolate egg (125g) and a pack of milk chocolate Chunky Buttons (25g).

Please pray for Magda Andrade de Jesus and Goran Radivosevic who will get married at All Saints on March 8th 2015 and have been a new couple in our morning service recently now that Madga has joined Goran.

Goran has been attending All Saints since harvest 2014 - do please say hello to him and welcome him into the community.

Hello, we are the Rose Family. Jemima is 1 year old, Oscar is 3 in March, Chrissy is ageless and Alistair is 39.

We have lived in Ealing for the past 5 years and first visited All Saints about 2 years ago. We've been attending more regularly since Rachel became the permanent vicar. We find it a very warm and welcoming place, with a great junior church and a really good mix of people of all ages.

Chrissy and I met each other about 10 years ago while we were both working in London. We got married in April 2011 and have been blessed with two gorgeous children. Chrissy is currently 8 months pregnant, with number 3 due to arrive sometime in mid-April. We're both really enjoying life as parents and we love spending time together as a family.

Oscar and Jemima were baptised at All Saints in November, as some of you may remember, and we're keen for the church to play an important role in their lives as they grow up. We look forward to getting to know you all better over the months and years ahead.

Hello, my name is Belinda. I began attending All Saints in early September 2014. My son Jamie (then aged 6) had been badgering me to have him baptised. This was since his Reception year at Christ the Saviour. We know quite a few people locally and from our school who attend so we came along.

If I can briefly explain, I have not attended church regularly for 30 years - I was raised and confirmed in the URC; therefore I did not know what to expect or how I would feel that first September day. Jamie was instantly happy and received a very warm welcome in Junior church and mucked in straight away - even helping with the Offertory on his first day in church! My own experience was initially one of trepidation, it was over 30 years(!) but the open formality of the main Sunday worship and the reassuring spiritual leadership of Rev'd Rachel has enabled me to gain an inner peace I did not know existed.

I enjoy the variety of services All Saints provides - each with something to take away into my daily busy life. I also enjoyed helping out at the Night Shelter last December and to see how the Christian community at All Saints extends into the wider community to make a real difference. I consider that as a 'returning Christian' I am lucky to have walked through the doors of this church and all it has to offer. I look forward to serving as one of the team of chalice bearers in the future, and to Jamie’s baptism on 28th June 2015.

Book Recommendation: “Meeting God in Mark”,

by Dr Rowan Williams.

On the Church 3 year cycle for scripture reading (called The Lectionary), we will be mostly hearing from the Gospel of Mark this year.

This book, written by the previous Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, is a very readable analysis of Mark, a good read for anyone.

CHARITY APPEAL FOR KILIMANJARO CLIMB,

In aid of Hope for Children.

Caitlin Horrex, one of our own All Saints’ young people, now studying in Leeds, is preparing for a massive personal challenge and needs both our prayers and encouragement, and our sponsorship: Hey everyone!

I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for 'Hope for Children' ,which is a charity that helps children all over the world (Asia, Africa and The UK) to reach their full potential. There are four areas that this charity helps with: Education, Health, Livelihoods and Rights. Hope for Children currently has projects in 7 different countries which all have different social and economic circumstances presenting different challenges to children and their families. Currently Hope for Children are working in Ghana, India, the Philippines, Sir Lanka, Uganda, UK and Tanzania.

Tanzania is where I will be travelling to in early September to trek up Mount Kilimanjaro with 15 other students from my university (Leeds college of Art) as well as other students from different universities in the UK. I'll be away from home for 10 days and the Trek itself lasts 7 days.

The world’s highest freestanding peak, Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano and rises alone from the surrounding savannah. It’s a multi day trek with a significant altitude challenge, being 5895 metres above sea level, to be precise! There are several hours of trekking a day, I’ll have to deal with sub-zero temperatures and very thin air, however I still can’t wait for ‘the experience of a life time’ which some ex-Kilimanjaro climbers have described it as. I'm really excited and I plan to get as fit as possible and prepare myself.

Wednesday Plant & Pray potted up our first plant in the Vicarage greenhouse!

As the sun continues to warm us, there will be more seed sowing and pot filling: who knows where it will lead? Do join us, bring seeds, cuttings or just curiosity!

Plant & Pray gathers at The Vicarage on Wednesday mornings after the 10.30 am reflective Communion Service, & until Easter, combines with our Lent study of John’s Gospel over coffee (Yes we get busy on Wednesdays!)

The Church Garden: Soon it will be time to get wellies on & trowels out to start weeding & mulching the flower beds.

Jane Taylor, who has transformed the beds in recent years, will be heading up a garden task force very soon. And she is keen to meet any interested volunteers. So let her know if that is something that you feel called to. All ideas and help are welcome.

And grass will soon be growing too: Consider if you could lend a hand occasionally over the spring & summer to operate the lawnmower.

Lent is a time to take time to let the power of our faith story take hold of us, a time to let the events get up and walk around in us, a time to intensify our living unto Christ, a time to hover over the thoughts of our hearts, a time to place our feet in the streets of Jerusalem or to walk along the sea and listen to his Word, a time to touch his robe and feel the healing surge through us, a time to ponder and a time to wonder….

Lent is a time to allow a fresh new taste of God! Perhaps we’re afraid to have time to think, for thoughts come unbidden.

Perhaps we’re afraid to face our future knowing our past.

Give us courage, O God, to hear your Word and to read our living into it.

Give us the trust to know we’re forgiven and give us the faith to take up our lives and walk.

Youth Group Goes from Strength to Strength!

20 young people now on average at Youth Group engaging in prayer and fun- thanks be to God and thanks also to Equippers church who kindly gave us their air hockey table. Thanks to Henryk Marszalek, Matthew Perkins and Lee Langford for engaging our young disciples.
