Valentine’s Day A History of: Every February 14, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint, and where did these traditions come from? Find out about the history of this centuries-old holiday, from ancient Roman rituals to the customs of Victorian England. The history of Valentine’s Day—and its patron saint—is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men—his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl—who may have been his jailor’s daughter—who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It’s no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial—which probably occurred around 270 A.D—others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “christianize” celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and 3

then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. The boys then sliced the goat’s hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day at the end of the 5th century. The Roman “lottery” system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine’s Day — should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)

Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia. Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine’s Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.”

FACTS: Looking for Love 141 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second-most popular greeting-card-giving occasion. (This total excludes packaged kids valentines for classroom exchanges.) (Source: Hallmark research) Over 50 percent of all Valentine’s Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the observance, making Valentine’s Day a procrastinator’s delight. These establishments, which include Internet dating services, employed nearly 4,300 people and pulled in $489 million in revenues. Be Mine 2.2 million marriages take place in the United States annually. That breaks down to more than 6,000 a day. 112,185 marriages were performed in Nevada during 2008. So many couples “tie the knot” in the Silver State that it ranked fourth nationally in marriages, even though it’s total population that year among states was 35th.

The estimated U.S. median ages at first marriage for women and men are 25.9 and 27.6 respectively, in 2008. The age for women rose 4.2 years in the last three decades. The age for men at first marriage is up 3.6 years. Men and women in northeastern states generally have a higher median age at first marriage than the national average. In Massachusetts, for example, women were a median of 27.4 years old and men 29.1 years of age at first marriage. States where people typically marry young include Utah, where women were a median of 21.9 years and men, 23.9 years. 57% and 60% of American women and men, respectively, are 15 or older and currently married (includes those who are separated). 70%: The percentage of men and women ages 30 to 34 in 2008 who had been married at some point in their lives - either currently or formerly. 4.9 million opposite-sex cohabitating couples maintained households in 2005. California led the nation in the number of such establishments with 136, followed by Pennsylvania with 122. (Source:http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/cbptotal.html) 515 locations produced nonchocolate confectionary products in 2004. These establishments employed 22,234 people. The total value of shipments in 2004 for firms producing chocolate and cocoa products was $13.9 billion. Nonchocolate confectionery product manufacturing, meanwhile, was a $5.7 billion industry. 3,467 Number of confectionery and nut stores in the United States in 2004. Often referred to as candy stores, they are among the best sources of sweets for Valentine’s Day. The per capita consumption of candy by Americans in 2005 was 25.7 pounds. Candy consumption has actually declined over the last few years; in 1997, each American gobbled or savored more than 27 pounds of candy a year. Flowers The combined wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers in 2005 for all flower-producing operations with $100,000 or more in sales was $397 million. Among states, California was the leading producer, alone accounting for nearly three-quarters of this amount ($289 million). The combined wholesale value of domestically produced cut roses in 2005 for all operations with $100,000 or more in sales was $39 million. Among all types of cut flowers, roses were third in receipts ($39 million)to lilies ($76.9 million) and tulips ($39.1 million). There were 21,667 florists nationwide in 2004. Ladies Gryphyn

part 3

The fire in the large hearth was plenty ablaze and the table was overwhelmed with trays and bowls with meat, grapes, melons, nuts and berries and breads. Even with the sparse candles hanging from sconces the whole scene is well lit. Maids and servers came to fill glasses and offer other treats, most of which were declined respectfully and moved on. General Lukas and his wife sat at the head of the table. Gwen was seated just to the General’s left, next to Nistha. There was quiet chatter for a bit. Rowan had to adjust the damned dress her husband insists she wear. Being tight in the bodice and with the long skirt, it did nothing for her if she had to run or fight. Still she was smiling because the goddess awful dress was black and kept her weapons hidden rather well. As the attendants filtered away to clean the rest of the kitchen, a hum of low voices began to fill the room as everyone whispered to their neighbors. The first to speak was the General; he did not stand or make a scene. He simply made eye contact with a soldier just a few chairs down the long table. The man had a patch covering his left eye and wearing at least two days of whisker on his face and neck. With a subtle nod the man excused himself and made for an exit. “Welcome to all. An even bigger welcome and blessing for those who could come from afar to help insure our brotherhood and understanding.” General Lukas busied his hands rolling a puff. On a silver tray of green herb he was picking certain contents out, leaving others in and then he rolled it all into paper from the midsection out expertly with his thumbs. “The situation Earthside is getting out of hand. I want my wife and her sisters out of harm’s way.” A man farther down the dark wood table, obviously a member of the forces raised concern. “General, scouts to the north reported more activity along our borders. If the orc’s chose to move on us while you are Earthside there will be no Gryphyn to protect our Library and its people.” “I have been well informed of the orc activity and I have faith in my men to keep our borders clear. It will only be a moon cycle before Natalie and Adariyan return. Less than fourteen hours without Gryphyn blood in the library is the least of my concerns.” The General rolled the smoking parchment between his index finger and his thumb, loosening the end of the roll, “The portal in the North West Earthside has been compromised. The last thing we need is for the rest of Otherworld to know something is wrong with the barriers. We are lucky to sit 7

between the orcs and the portals. We are going to protect the humans and the portals.” Lukas took a pull from the roll and looked around for any reaction as he slowly exhaled. “It has been decided to change the Watch Orders. Natalie, Adariyan, Fincus and Leta are all coming back. They should be passing through the portal as we speak. This means we have 8 hours to get Rowan and myself through to set up camp Earthside,” “What about Nistha and me? It’s our tour as well.” Gwen interrupted with conviction as usual. The General kept his calm, not missing a beat of his empty heart he smiles to his sister-in-law. “Of course your portal will be set in accordance with the next matched elemental.” Lukas took a large puff and summoned more mead. “Lukas, I would much rather have my sister with me. She is young and while she has skill you and I both know she can get lost in the tides.” Rowan was not pleading so much as stating fact. She took her sisters hands and continued, “I insist you ride with us. You understand there is no guarantee that you meet us in the portal. That is decided by the element as a whole.” “Dear sun and stars, this is a topic for after the feast.” Lukas saw his first idea go up in flames. All he needed was for Gwen to take a portal to the wrong place. That shouldn’t be too hard for such a mindless child. Just one lost thought or distraction and she could be lost forever. As soon as his wife and her sisters are gone, he can finally make his final strike. He will take the Gryphyn throne, soon. “General,” a young soldier in a tunic and brown canvas pants appeared with a scroll of parchment. “I was told it is urgent.” The young man waited for the General’s nod of approval before making his way around the large and heavily crowded table. He was rushing so quickly he barely had time to stop himself from running right into the Master’s chair. Straightening his tunic and feathered cap he bows with the scroll in his extended hand. The General unraveled the scroll and read quickly. Face of stone as always his features betrayed no emotion. When he finished he roughly stowed the letter in a fold of his kilt. “My love, please excuse me,” then he turned to the crowd “Lords and ladies I will return shortly.” Rowan went to stand beside him and found her husbands’ hand holding her in place. As he bent down she knew something had changed. Something was wrong. Still, she nodded, placed a kiss on his cheek and sat back. She slowly reached for

the few weapons concealed by the black monstrosity she was wearing. Rowan knew her husband was plotting something big. Unsure of his intentions, she wasn’t sure if she should be excited or if she should take her sister and run before anyone gets hurt. It wouldn’t be the first time Lukas took liberties with her forces without her knowledge; a large point of tension in their relationship. “Rowan, Nistha and I are going on a walk in the garden, you should come.” Gwen pulled Rowan out of her fight or flight thoughts long enough for her to see that nobody else had realized anything was wrong. They all continued eating, drinking and discussing political affairs. “I must let Lukas know.” She turned to a young woman, “Would you let the guests out,” a hush came to Gwen, Rowan and Nistha as they made eye contact. Something went very wrong just then. Time stood still as the stained glass busted into shards erupting from every direction as the crowd began to panic, racing for the exits.

trol, which was the worst thing for her nerves. But the pleasure of feeling weightless, gliding over and through things so elegantly, it made her feel normal, happy almost. While traveling Rowan took pride in how bright her colors were. Oranges, purples and blues wrapped themselves around her in a beautiful dance of protection and confidence. She always felt this bliss was far too short lived. Before she knew it, the colors began to fade. Within seconds of arrival all three women were stripping and exchanging the formal gowns they had for crude leather tanks and pants. Bone wristbands and weapons on their hips were not the primary focus. It is the intricate inked artwork the women bore that made them different, the ink moves as a warning. Soon Rowan and Gwen will have horns and feathered wings and their vision will be heightened. “Rowan, where did Lukas go? I don’t mean to point fingers but, what the hell was that, pure coincidence?”

The ground began to shake whilst the candles remained lit through the massive winds.

“For all we know he is at the library securing scrolls.” Rowan’s voice belied her confidence.

Shouts came from every door leading out of the dining hall as men wearing armor and carrying weapons rushed about. One maiden had tried to ask the closest soldier what happened but was cut off but an arrow through her jugular.

This is what happens when you marry for political and social reasons. Not like Rowan could trust anyone anyway, she had been bitch slapped by betrayal once. Not wanting to think about that she returned to packing and holding faith in her husband.

The soldier lowered the woman’s lifeless body to the floor and yelled for his comrades to cover Rowan and Gwen. “The General will kills us all if anything happens to her,” he shouts as he makes his way to her side. Crouched low dodging arrows and running feet the unknown soldier made his way to Rowans side. “Lady Gryphyn, we must get your family to safety. We will take you…” “No, you follow me, listen to me and with luck we make it out. Stay close. We don’t wait for anyone.” Rowan did the soldier a favor as she took his hand in hers before willing herself elsewhere. The clatter of metal, glass and marble drown out Rowan’s shouts to Gwen so she shimmered next to her sister. “Grab Nistha, she is going with us. We stop at my libraries then hit the portal. Hopefully Lukas can meet us there.” Gwen finally grasped her friend’s hand as she and Rowan transported Nistha and the soldier. Rowan was rather fond of traveling on air. She had no con-

Lukas isn’t like that. He is helping cover the scrolls. Right!? “Lady Gryphyn, and Miss Gryphyn we must get you both to safety.” The soldier had been keeping guard at the door to Rowans chambers while the women changed. Now standing at her beloved bookshelves with her leather pack, Rowan hadn’t really heard what the man in uniform said instead she was focused on which volumes of her collection to bring. “Lady Gryphyn,” the man persisted. “I don’t know who this Lady you keep talking about is. I imagine she is a fine woman with manners, a family perhaps and lives in a cottage just south of the river.” Rowan turned on the young man, “But she isn’t here which means you are talking to yourself. Don’t worry I’m not judging, but it would be nice for the rest of us if you can keep your imaginary conversations with women to yourself.” The stunned and very confused look on the youth’s face made Gwen laughed out loud and Nistha rolled her bright green eyes.

8

“What is your name?” “Thasher,” He stood so tall, with pride and arrogance. “Thasher, I am Rowan, my sister Gwen and our lifelong friend Nistha. From here on out, those are our names. No miss, ma’am or Lady. It doesn’t fit us. And now you are on my asses to kick list because I just had to spend time giving you verbal battle etiquette.” Thasher, now ten times more red in the face and at least a foot shorter than he had been stepped to the side and asked if there was anything he could do to help.

Laughing deep in his chest and finally dropping the I-willkill-you-with-one-look attitude he reaches out and tests each person’s aura. He leans in closer to Rowan, “You, perhaps should not travel with us. Your husband has an elemental waiting for you.” “I don’t think so, you see we need your help because my home and military base were attacked. So we are asking you, very politely, take us to through the damn portal.”

Gwen indicated the floating bowl of liquid in the middle of the room that Rowan paces by as she reads.

Instantly the elemental was nose to nose with Rowan and he had rage in his very being. Looking Rowan up and down with a scowl he backs up just a step.

“Can you summon an elemental?” Her voice shook him from his incessant inner monologue. “Yeah, but it might take me a minute. I need to focus more than most”

“Fine, but only because you have Scrollyn blood, your great grandmother would have your hide if she heard the way you spoke to me.”

“Great, just great a portal novice…” Rowan’s voice trailed in and out as she rushed back and forth grabbing more supplies. Now that just made Thasher fume, he was not a novice! He simply put more effort into might magic, not scroll work or fairy tales. Dare he say that out loud?

Rogue began rubbing his hands together. Faster and faster his hands moved beginning to take shape of a door. He held the portal open with his large fingers, making the people passing through gasp at how large the elemental really was.

Gwen was suddenly at his side. Her hair was the perfect mixture of brown and red and smelled warm, of lilies and campfire. She placed a soft hand on his right elbow and urged him toward the swirling bowl of color. “Thasher,” Gwen’s voice was melodic; her fey like whispers filled his head as she leaned up and placed her cheek on his, “I have faith in you. I have faith in your ability to summon the strongest elemental because you know he will keep my sister and I safe.” He turned his head in her direction, gave her a knowing smirk as he began moving his hands over the liquid. Nistha and Rowan were just rushing towards them when Thasher had almost finished with his Elemental. Even though the elemental was obviously liquid, he looked to be made of obsidian. His large torso was chiseled and unmoving. Its eyes looked down his nose at the others as if they had interrupted a very important task he was set at. His arms crossed tightly over a chest of monstrous width he simply stared at the three women and one man who had woken him. “Thasher,” a deep rumbling voice echoed “the last time I was summoned to you with three women we found ourselves in the middle of Nadasea for weeks” Cursing and doing his best to look unabashed by such an over-share of history, he chuckled. “Well, this time I bring you two of the Sisters Gryphyn and 9

their confidant Nistha” Thasher made an exaggerated bow to introduce the women. “Ladies, this is Rogue.”

Each person hearing their own call of the portal itself, they all began to sway to individual tune. Nobody seemed to notice being lifted into the air, they simply continued to dance and sway in their most natural way. Not having a life partner to travel with Rowan stepped through with Nistha while Thasher and Gwen went together. The music in Rowan’s ears began with electric guitars and pianos. She was turning in circles, shaking her head making her crazy long black hair swing about dangerously. She listened to the hard beats of her favorite metal and alternative bands. Without notice she was tipped upside down next to Nistha and spun in no particular direction as her portal call changed. Rowan was now hearing the cellos, the violin, the acoustic guitar all taking form of a sad end. The more she connected with the music the slower she was spinning. She had lost her focus. Who the hell listens to cellos anyway!? Looking around she found herself suspended above a solid of some sort on which four beings seemed to be huddled. She thought to herself, ‘Great, now what did you get yourself into now?’ With that thought she fell not so gracefully into the middle of the crowd. The original landing had her on her rear and almost defenseless, until she did a somersault and came up with two blades drawn ready to do battle.

means that I dance on stage at events (raves) and interact with the audience to get the crowd excited and moving, this does not mean I am a stripper ha-ha. So if you’re in Boise and are looking for something to do, go check out one of the shows! Sometimes you can find me spinning fire or poi, I’ve been practicing for about 7 months now and could teach you a thing or two (: I love music, if I had it my way I’d be producing and mixing my own tracks, unfortunately, due to being an adolescent, I am too fiscally challenged for the equipment at this time. I’m really into electronic music, I’m probably around that the most as of late, though I’ll listen to anything, from Pink Floyd and The Beatles, to Asking Alexandria and A Day to Remember! I have a better appreciation for music now that I understand it a more, to me, people put their whole selves into anything they make and I can’t wait to listen to who they are; if that makes any sense. Also, I love tattoos, though I only have one so far. It is one of my goals to be a tattoo artist, I would love to own my own shop in the long run, I already have lots of ideas and even a name in mind, but I expect it will take a little while, I draw a lot and want all my tattoos I get, to be things I’ve done, so they are more original. It would make me really happy to be able to get people to like my artwork so much that they want it on their body; it’s a very flattering idea. I really like it here in the Magic Valley and can’t wait to see what it has to offer and the people I’m going to meet! Thank you for choosing me as one of the girls for February!

Melissa My name is Melissa Canella; I was born on January 17, 1991 in Boise, Idaho. Finally 21 and single; now, buy me a drink! Ha-ha. I’ve got purple hair and love to change my look up frequently; my hair has been lots of different colors so far. Sushi is my favorite food, but I think food in general is amazing. I absolutely love cooking and have been doing that since I was young. I’m about 5’5’’ and 115lbs, and I enjoy staying active from dancing to running and everything in between (: I love art, music, movies, spinning poi/fire and making new friends wherever I go. I have been living in Magic Valley for a little while now with one of my best friends Kayla Owens. I attended the College of Western Idaho for a bit where I studied French, philosophy, and business. I want to be a tattoo artist, bartender, pastry chef, or an actress. Anything really to let my creative side out would make me happy. I am a laid back, gowith-the-flow type of person and I just want to enjoy my life. I am a go-go dancer for Audiothrill Productions in Boise, so about every weekend you can find me dancing around in my underwear. For those of you that are unsure what that entails, it 12

Kayla My name is Kayla Owens, I was born on February 18, 1991. I was born in Boise, Idaho, but have been living in Magic Valley for about a half of a year now. I attended Nampa High School and graduated in 2009. I talked my friend Melissa into moving in with me so now we really are inseparable. I enjoy dancing, hanging with friends, reading and anything else that gets me out and about. I can be found at the hookah lounge, parties and events in Boise. Though I don’t have any tattoos yet, I look forward to my first. (Insert virgin joke here). Ultimately I look for good people to hang with. I like to have a good time. I know when it is important for me to be responsible but I avoid those situations at all costs‌ Look forward to meeting all of you and thank you for putting me and my girl Mellissa as Lady of the Month!

Congratulations to both of you. Thank you for the fun pics! RMV

Interview: sOphia By Christina Fullbright

Location: Jack’s Lounge, Jerome Id Date: January 21, 2012 Band Members: Josh Marr (guitar, vocals), Micah Rovera (guitar, vocals), Mick Alaniz (turntables, percussion, keys), Russ Worstell (drums), and Geno Lopez (bass) http://www.myspace.com/deadforsophia http://www.facebook.com/deadforsophia

Questions: RMV: Where are you from? sOphia: The band originated and formed in Twin Falls June of 2009, currently located in Boise as of June 2011. They have been playing together for 2 ½ yrs. now. One member still currently lives in the Magic Valley. They are in “rewrite mode” as they get transitioned to the Boise area. Adjusted sound with the new members.

RMV:

How did you meet?

sOphia: They met while attending meetings through the artist community, like a commune. Every Wednesday night they would meet to write poetry, do visual arts, etc. Russ joined later through contact with SKiTTiSH iTZ where they still have great relations. They heard great things about Geno with improve and such, so the search was on until they found him. Come to find out one of the members had his number all along. RMV:

Why the name “sOphia”?

sOphia: “A million reasons” Sophia came from an old text, about 2000 years old, discovered around 1954. The text talked about a woman, also some philosophical elements that caught their attention. It is a familiar name, fans have told them about many meanings/origins of the name over the years. RMV:

What kind of music do you play?

sOphia: Alternative style. They get the question a lot and have

a hard time answering. Their music is based on the fundamentals of rock. It would kind of be like if Jack Johnson sounded like Rage Against the Machine. They also compared their style to murder pop – commits murder but does not get its hands dirty. RMV: Who are your influences? They say they are pretty much eclectic, with influences from Hip-Hop, Punk Funk, Rap, Dance, Jazz, Latino, electronic beats, acoustic sounds. Radio Head is a general influence. Each member has a unique playlist, no two are the same. With their variety of influence they have a unique sound has elements of lots of different genres. RMV: What are your favorite things about being in a band? sOphia: The camaraderie, making family out of strangers. They love to meet people. They don’t like back stabbing or drama. They like putting on shows where they get to work together with other groups. Working together as fellow musicians and not as competitors. RMV: What is your favorite song(s) to play? sOphia: ‘Holiday’ is the consensus, with ‘Lets Fool Around’, ‘Don’t You Want Me’, and ‘This is How You Do It’ following. Any of our songs that are crowd engaging are the favorites. RMV: Where do you see yourself in the future? sOphia: Playing music till we die. They really don’t want to be too big, just enough to make it. They all have families and maintaining that base is important. If they could play music and not have to work another job, that would be ideal. RMV: Any upcoming shows? sOphia: None planned as of the Jan 21st show, but will touring soon. Once the new album is done the road is open. It is in the air but will happen. The album material is ready; we just have to lay the tracks down (February 2012).

asking for anything in return. He is officially the band manager. They say they owe most of their success to him, THANKS. Also big thanks to the women in their lives. They do not get jealous and are very supportive. And to the staff at Woody’s, especially Dave, and Von Scheidt’s, this is where it all started.

The Show We got a chance to sit down and enjoy the show at Jacks Lounge in Jerome. First up was LSD and Mic ill. I can never get enough of these guys, the way they play off of each other, their talent combined with knowing how to get the crowd started made for an excellent begging to the show. Next up was a band I have never herd of skittish Itz. These guys remind me of some of the old school punk bands with some new and old twists meshed into a great performance. The talent and enegy that came from the stage made for an awesome rock out session. Finally sOphi hit the stage. I had been waiting to here them live as I had checked out some of their music online before. They did not let me down or the crowd for that matter. They have a great sound that is hard to place but easy to rock out to. We were very happy to have seen the show and had a great time. The talent the host and the over all mood was great! A big thanks goes out from RMV to Joey Brovo, Mic ill and Josh Whittaker... Oh ya and Doug lol

RMV: Where do people get your music? sOphia: This February fans should see the first full length album being put together by R.U. Down Entertainment. They also have a self-titled EP with 5 songs. Those songs don’t really reflect the band now and were much better live. Videos are on YouTube, Face Book and MySpace (links above) or search for “Dead for Sophia”. RMV: Where have you played? sOphia: Woody’s, Von Scheidt’s, car shows, house parties for birthdays, City Park, Turf Club, Ballroom, and the Cove.

Special thanks: JOEY BRAVO – he has always been behind our band, promoting, encouraging, and supporting us and not

Beckmon’s Gaming and Supply By Niki Archibald

The events calendar I am looking at is decorated with scribblings of times in the individual boxes of days, the classic logo for “Magic, the card game” occupied every Friday and Saturday night. Just beneath and to the left of this rather large and creatively organized planner sits a chest high book shelf covered in Dungeons and Dragons books as well as some lesser known table top role playing games like the Star Wars based d-20 system guides. To most people the last statements would be gibberish. But to some of the most frequent customers of Beckmon’s Gaming and Supply, this is mundane lingo. At the counter of Beckmon’s Gaming and Supply, Jon Beckmon assists a customer in picking out specific Magic cards while they make idle chat and complete the lengthy transaction. Before long the rather charming Jon Beckmon offers me a tour of his small yet brilliant store. The front room is wide and has an almost ‘L’ shape to it. The walls and bookshelves are covered with a variety of art covered books and manuals. A few places on the walls were reserved for miniatures and other gamer knick knacks. Even with a fair few unopened boxes cluttering the small space in front of the counter you can still see the mass amount of dice sets inside the glass. The colors and sizes are vast, almost overwhelming. Finally sitting at a collapsible table in front of a large window looking out on Blue Lakes Blvd, Jon is more than happy to answer just a few questions about what his store means to him and his clientele. “Really I got tired of working for other people. I wanted to be my own boss and do something I love,” says Jon when asked why he started such a shop in Twin Falls.

Most everyone can empathize with that sentiment.

When I asked the Friday night crowd of gamers what they thought of the shop I got simple flattering answers. It wasn’t until being asked about the games they are playing that the group seemed to really open up and shine. When I asked 8 year old Sheldon how long he has been playing Magic he lit up before stating “I have been building my deck for almost 2 years”

Mark has been playing Magic for more than 6 years in total and really enjoys being able to connect with his son outside the home. “It is something we both enjoy and we have a good time.” Mark and Paul are laid back and talkative until it is time to play. From the front room where Magic had taken over we went to the second room towards the back of the store to find more Magic players. This crowd was a bit younger than Mark and Paul, teens and young adults with a sort of place mat out with various gaming characters and game symbols on them. Each had a story about how they got into the card game. For some it was friends, others started collecting card games back when Pokemon cards were in. Either way it is agreed that Magic and gaming are the best alternative to a lot of things they could be doing on a Friday night. “It keeps us off drugs.” As stated very bluntly by 19 year old Jeremy. Others in the room agree and once again I move on. In the last room there was a large square made of tables, a dozen chairs or so were taken up by a group of gentlemen who were listening very intently to a man describing some kind of table top game. He seemed to be introducing the group to this game with much enthusiasm.

Pathfinder is the group’s new venture.

Most of these guys have so much to say about their campaign; sometimes it was hard for me to follow their train of thought. The one thing everyone has agreed on is how much they enjoy the game. While some players are rule police and others are terrible at knowing what to do and when, this group of seasoned gamers is comfortable in their style and their camaraderie. David says the most important thing about gaming, table top especially is to “…bring your imagination to the table.” The gamers are grateful for Jon’s friendship and ability to give them a place to unite and game their hearts out. Jon is grateful to be doing something he loves with people he gets along with. Ultimately everyone wins, well, not everyone. There is always someone with more Hit Points than you.

Of course it was he, his dad Mark and family friend Paul who clarify what building a deck entails. I soon learn that 22

Interview: SKiTTiSH iTZ By Christina Fullbright

Location: Jack’s Lounge, Jerome Id Date: January 21, 2012 Band Members: Russ Worstell, Mason Worstell, Chris Haffner (interim guitarist), Jordan Breen and Nic Carlson (missing guitarist in Antarctica doing a Biology Internship) http://www.facebook.com/SKiTTiSHiTZ http://www.reverbnation.com/skittishitz http://www.myspace.com/skittishitz http://www.purevolume.com/SKiTTiSHiTZ http://www.last.fm/music/Skittish+Itz

Questions: RMV: Where are you from? SKiTTiSH iTZ: The band originated and formed in Twin Falls in 2006, currently located in Boise. One member is still in Twin Falls. RMV: How did you meet? 23

SKiTTiSH iTZ: The band was Mason’s and Nic’s idea. RMV: Why the name “SKiTTiSH iTZ”? There is a sense of humor that goes with the name. They opened the dictionary and pointed to a word – skittish. Itz comes from there being a female bassist at the time. A definition they came up with: An unaltered state of mind in which clarity can’t be achieved. It is like being sober but you can’t think straight. RMV: What kind of music do you play? SKiTTiSH iTZ: Cake Punk – sound is influenced by punk and everyone loves cake. RMV: Who are your influences? SKiTTiSH iTZ: Bouncing Souls, Gold Finger, Real Big Fish, No Effects. RMV: What are your favorite things about being in a band?

SKiTTiSH iTZ: Unity without the drama. They have neither a dictatorship nor a democracy. If someone does not like something it’s gone. Impressively they have written over 80 songs and they all must agree on them. RMV: What is your favorite song(s) to play? SKiTTiSH iTZ: Medicine, Life & Escape RMV: Where do you see yourself in the future? SKiTTiSH iTZ: They want to be known, but not too big. The biggest thing is to have fun and become better. Russ cannot imagine not doing this. They will be playing anywhere, anytime as long as they can get everyone together. RMV: Any upcoming shows? SKiTTiSH iTZ: Red Room, Boise in February, Benefit Show at Jack’s in June. Will be recording an album this summer. RMV: Where do people get your music? SKiTTiSH iTZ: They have 2 albums. Music available at 1332Records.com also at Hastings, iTunes, Amazon, Reverb Nation, Facebook.

Special Thanks: Pat at Von Sheidt’s, Dr. Nick Redbone, Levi Poppkey at 1332 Records, our families, previous members and the Jerome County Sheriff for not arresting us. Special thanks to Chris for filling in and to Nic, sorry you could not be here. And to anyone who can put up with us.
