his weekend, bike, walk, run, and play in the streets as a stretch of Philly roads are shut down to cars and traffic.

Spurred by Pope Francis’ stopover in the city last year, Philadelphia Free Streets aims to celebrate the facets of the city often ignored due to rush hour and traffic jams. Mayor Jim Kenney announced the event in August as a transformative measure to encourage physical activity, learning about wellness, and to create a better—or at least safer—future for the city’s children. Initially conceived by Open Streets PHL, a nonproďŹ t working to provide free and fun activities to the community by temporarily closing select streets to traffic, the event will feature family-friendly activities and educational programming about the city’s architecture, waterways, art and cultures.

The approximately 9-mile route will close down Front and South Street from the Schuylkill River Trail to the Bridge, then up toward Martin Luther King Drive winding its way up passed Sweet Briar Drive and Black Road. Certain intersections of South Street will allow cars to cross to avoid Bridgegate-level traffic jams. Parking will be prohibited along the Philly Free Streets route, with ticketing and towing beginning Saturday at 3 am.

Style takes center stage this week as Philly Fashion Week kicks off it’s 10th year showcasing the most up-to-date and fashionforward trends in the industry.

On Wed., Phashion Phest takes over One Liberty Observation Deck with a VIP Fashion Show and cocktail party. Over the weekend, Fashion Week hosts Runway I and Runway II, featuring the work of local designers.

Runway I features designs from Ray Vicente, Dajon J, Volare, Onyx Taylor, and Ian Alexander; Runway II showcases the work of Shirley Posey, Christobal, Andrew Nowell, Todd Anthony, and Thomas Lavone. Through Sept.

Throughout the event, city departments, including Indego Bike Share, Mural Arts and the Free Library of Philadelphia will be hosting events to get you moving, including a mural maze, group bike rides, line dancing, Zumba, and an environmental ďŹ sh ladder tour on the Schuylkill River. Sweetbriar Fields in West Fairmount Park will host a community concert featuring the Hip Hop Fundamentals, Lady Hoofers and Franklin Learning Center Dance.

Although the primary objective is to provide recreation for residents by closing the streets to automotive traffic, the hope is that this could also lay the groundwork for more car-free days.

But, for the moment, this weekend’s event is the only one of its kind on the books. Want more pedestrian street days? Open Streets PHL is always looking for more support. It was due to both public demand and the mayor’s support of the concept that this became a thing in the ďŹ rst place. So get out there and feel the liberation of not taking your life into your hands on Philly’s streets this weekend. The day at the very least is going to be unique with all the activities and educational programming you can walk to.

Kicking Ax in Kensington A first-hand preview of Urban Axes (Say hello to East Kensington’s newest neighbor.)

I

wasn’t at a Renaissance fair when I picked up the wooden handle attached to a wedge of metal when I was in East Kensington last week.

My husband and I hadn’t been arguing—because throwing inanimate objects is a great way to release all those aggressive feelings that go along with marital bliss.

I had just thrown an ax for the first time and it was all in the name of fun (and OK, maybe to let out some of that pent-up aggression).

That’s right—throwing axes is now a form of entertainment.

Urban Axes, which popped up recently

in a section of Kensington that is experiencing the trickling effect of gentrification from nearby Fishtown, will bring competitive indoor ax-throwing to the public with the start of two more leagues on October 11 and 12.

Co-owners Shaun Hurley, Stuart Jones, Krista Poll and Matt Paton have been participating in ax-throwing in Toronto for several years.

The four are ax-throwing extremists and decided to open their own business after tiring of making the trek to another country to enjoy their hobby.

Now, you, too, can get addicted.

It’s just like darts, only bigger and more satisfying.

And more intimidating (for me, at least).

At a recent “group friends and family style tournament,” I, along with my husband and staff photographer, went to check out all the hype.

I had no clue what to expect; the closest thing to an ax I ever handled was a steak knife.

And so I prepared accordingly.

I braided my pigtails, envisioning myself as a Viking goddess warrior. My husband did push-ups in between trimming his lumberjack beard.

“It’s 100 percent not strength,” coowner Shaun Hurley told me, stopping to let out a loud yell of approval as a fellow ax-thrower nailed a bull’s-eye. “I’ve seen 80-year-olds in wheelchairs, fat, thin, tall.

You don’t have to be a hard-core athlete.

Anyone can do it.”

Well, with some coaching from the “axperts,” of course.

These pros go over all the necessary rules of the venue, teach you how to throw an ax and ensure the safety of all ax-slinging aficionados.

My ax-pert, Courtney Cooke, was super laid back and super patient with my first pathetic attempts to have my flying

ax make contact with the target 15 feet away.

“You suck,” she deadpanned before bursting into laughter, “but that’s great, cause we can work on you.”

And work we do.

First, I developed the unusual habit of bringing the ax over my shoulder (it’s supposed to be brought back between your shoulder blades).

And then, I had to master my “little mermaid.”

The little mermaid stance—hands flexed downward with arms sweeping back as if I were pushing myself up on the rock—took most of the night to perfect.

The atmosphere itself was probably the most important factor.

Every time my ax made contact, even if it didn’t stick, there was some sort of encouragement offered, either by my axpert or fellow ax-throwers.

And when your ax sticks, watch out.

The roar is like a sports stadium.

And it’s even more amplified when the “big ax” comes out.

Our staff photographer garnered a “Fuck yeah, you did!” after landing a bull’s-eye.

If that isn’t encouraging enough, you can always enjoy some liquid courage.

Enter BYOB. Sure, alcohol and sharp objects sound like the perfect cocktail for something bad, like an ax in the back.

But Urban Axes is no frat party—much as the multitude of bearded men, red Solo cups and plastic Viking hats atop of the water dispenser might say otherwise.

Urban Axes means business.

Lily Cope, Axe Master General, clearly outlined the rules, stating people who were visibly intoxicated would never be granted entrance and people who got sloshed inside would be asked to leave.

Hurley was even more blunt.

“We have zero tolerance on stupidity,” he said. “You will have to leave.”

Outside of booze, throwing sharp objects in a small confined space seems like it would warrant some liability issues.

Getting insurance was not an easy task, according to Hurley.

“We basically went through every major broker in the continental U.S., and most of them laughed at us,” he said.

Laugh no more, because if my visit was any indication, ax-throwing may be the next big thing.

Get Some Class Mount Airy Learning Tree celebrates 35 of teaching Philly.

R

emember those kooky electives at college that had virtually no real world application but were a funas-hell break from the norm? There’s still a place where you can indulge in learning a quirky, new hobby without the tuition stress of higher ed. Mt. Airy Learning Tree (MALT) has been hosting classes in everything from basic plumbing and resume prep to dream interpretation and basket weaving for 35 years. They’re celebrating this milestone with a big party this month.

Even if you aren’t in the market to take a recreational learning class, flipping through the MALT catalog of classes can be entertaining in itself: Body Positive Figure Drawing... Hot Glassblowing I... Crazy for Pancakes… Detroit Style Ballroom Dancing. Who knew classes like these even existed?

One of MALT’s attractions is that it gives area residents—even those without advanced degrees—an opportunity to share their personal expertise and passion with others. Anyone can lead a class —and retain a chunk of the class fees along the way.

“It is pretty interesting when you look at the catalog then and now. Not much has changed, except we’ve grown and we have more and more teachers that want to teach and students that want to learn,” said Executive Director Judy Weinstein.

She began working at MALT nearly a decade ago, initially just part-time on special projects. Having been the director for close to four years now, she said one of the things she finds most striking about MALT is that it has remained relatively unchanged for three-plus decades.

Sure, the catalog of classes has grown from just a single sheet pamphlet to a thick book of classes, and you can register online now rather than by snail mail.

But the basics—the concept of neighbor teaching neighbor—is pretty much the same as it was back in 1981. That’s when Barbara Bloom, a teacher herself, came up with the concept for the organization, offering classes like Parenting in the ‘80s and The Pleasure of High Fidelity Sound.

“If people have skills to share, passions to share, they propose a class and we put the class in our catalog and that really has not changed in 35 years,” said Weinstein. And it really is that simple.

even been partner massage class)? Just fill out MALT’s online pitch form and you’re on your way to teaching. The hardest part turns out to be whether your breadmaking or holistic cardio workout class will draw enough interest for it to actually run.

That’s not too big of an obstacle, however, since some classes are held even with less than a handful of students. Meanwhile, registration for many classes maxes out quickly.

MALT is geared toward adult learning primarily, although there are some classes for kids. The focus has, from the start, been on providing a wide array of classes,

both practical and as Weinstein puts it “whimsical,” to grown-ups who typically don’t get the opportunity to indulge in learning something new. She said the group began with just 17 classes and 125 registrants in its first semester. Today it boasts more than 250 classes with three semesters each year and over 5,000 students annually.

Today, the organization has its own brick and mortar homebase at Greene and W. Hortter streets in West Mount Airy. Some classes are held there, but the majority are off site, a quality that Weinstein says gives the Learning Tree some

of its character. With more than 75 locations, MALT offers classes held in offices, stores, churches and community centers—sometimes even at an instructor’s house. “That’s really special to us, that these locations will give us their key, give us their security code, let us use their building; it really brings people together in a wonderful way.”

Around Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, Manayunk and Roxborough, it’s a seasonal rite to find the MALT catalog in the mailbox. That’s not to say that those are the only neighborhoods that have residents who attend MALT classes.

Weinstein said she sees students coming from nearly 140 different zip codes.

Many classes have remained relevant over the years, while others have become obsolete. The standards of home DIY, financial planning, dance, painting and yoga are perennial favorites. “Back then we had Women as Superheroes in Comics,” said Weinstein. “Today we have mead-making for beginners, beekeeping and learning to read tarot cards.”

Weinstein said that although the learning center sees a wide range of students, the biggest demographic is women over 40. “It’s just that the 40-year-olds and above tend to be out of that ‘establish my career’ mode and don’t have young children who need them all the time.”

By far, the most popular classes are the adult “learn to swim” programs, which Weinstein said fill up each semester. Take it from someone who tried to find classes in Philly to teach this non-swimmer some water skills. There aren’t many. Offered at both Chestnut Hill College’s pool and—back when I took my swim lessons, Temple University—the classes cover everything from the baby steps of putting your head under water to learning to backstroke, all in a few weekly classes.

Often YMCAs are the only other option for swim classes. But as Weinstein pointed out: “People can take our classes without having to pay a membership fee at a gym or having to join the YMCA. It can be expensive.”

The low cost is what keeps many students coming back, with similar courses offered each semester. You can take the same yoga class with the same instructor but not have to pay gym fees.”

Access can to facilities is key. Golf classes, for ex-

ample, are in demand, but they’re impossible to hold without access to a golf course. Or rowing. You need a boathouse for that. Luckily, Weinstein said, MALT can offer rowing classes on the Schuylkill, thanks to instructors Brandon Johnson and Kay MacDonald. “They’ve made it possible to get the general population onto the river.

They’re personally committed to community access to rowing,” added Weinstein.

There are some duds, of course. Opinions are like...

P

hiladelphia is a city of, if nothing else, opinions. Just think sports radio during a quarterback controversy (thank you Wentz for currently removing that). And it might not come as much of a surprise that for almost a decade, city government has not formally asked residents’ their opinions on city services. But the wait is over. City Hall is partnering with Temple University’s Institute for Survey Research (ISR) and BeHeardPhilly to conduct a comprehensive survey of residents’ attitudes toward a wide range of municipal services.

Measuring public opinion, the 2016 Philadelphia Resident Survey asks you, Mr. & Mrs. Philadelphia, to rate everything from the police department to trash pickup, parks and rec to the zoning board.

“Philadelphians have never been shy to voice their opinions about city services,” said Mayor Jim Kenney in a press release announcing the survey. “But for too long the City has failed to use that feedback in a systemic (sic) way. This resident survey is an important step in that direction.”

The city promises that the survey will become an annual occurrence. Already,

a random selection of Philadelphia residents have been mailed invitations to participate. Additionally, all residents of Philly 18 and older are welcome to take the survey online at PHLsurvey.com.

Surveys can be conducted in both English and Spanish. Upon completion, participants are invited to join Temple ISR’s BeHeardPhilly, an ongoing survey program at the university. Expect follow-up focus groups and shorter, topic-specific surveys to collect more in-depth feedback on specific city services and initiatives.

The Revolution is Just a Railroad Away Billy Bragg and Joe Henry ride the ‘arc of history’ with new album and show at UT.

W

ith each release, it seems more apparent that England’s primary Time Lord export isn’t Dr. Who—it’s Billy Bragg. Whether the song he’s singing was written by him last year or by someone else a century ago, it’s immediately relevant to whatever’s going on in the world.

It happens often with his own tracks: 1986’s Ideology is just as much a lament of contemporary Congressional gridlock as it was of partisan bickering in Bragg’s homeland when he wrote it. Sexuality, Bragg’s 1991 call for inclusivity, fits today’s LGBT fight for equality.

Even when he cherry-picks lines from someone as seemingly antiquated as Rudyard Kipling (“What do they know of England, who only England know”) or quotes him en masse (“A Pict Song”) you’d have to check the liner notes to realize they weren’t contemporary compositions.

Bragg’s ability to blur old and new came further to the forefront in the ‘90s with the Mermaid Avenue albums. A series of collaborations with the band Wilco, the tracks here were unused Woody Guthrie lyrics set to newly-composed music.

Later, on his 2013 release Tooth and Nail, Guthrie’s Depression-era ballad ”I Ain’t Got No Home” becomes, with no lyrical adjustments, about people who lost their houses after the 2008 financial crash.

“A lot of what I am doing has its basis in that kind of folk music singing. Not in traditional folk but more in storytelling folk, such as Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly,” said Bragg on the eve of a new album release and North American tour. ”Their ability to tell a story—I mean, the way Leadbelly plays a song is, half of it’s a story and half of it’s a song.”

It’s another collaboration, this time with longtime colleague Joe Henry. Like those songs, the album is just as much about the story behind it, as it is the music.

The songs were all old railroad tunes from the early 20th century. Quite literally, as Bragg and Henry recorded them in sleeper cars and train platforms during a 2,728-mile railroad journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. It was a guerilla effort, with the duo and a recording engineer tracking in the nooks and crannies of the trip.

“I think the greatest thing about taking a train in North America is that the

train gives you a totally new perspective as from the one you normally get going to the freeway. Because they often spend a lot of times moving slowly coming into the city, because they have to negotiate the crossings. You could be looking into someone’s backyard or kitchen window,” he said.

On this trip especially, he said, “There were places I normally didn’t go. Arkansas, Northern Texas, New Mexico—places that I normally would’ve missed.”

There’s plenty to say about the “how’s” of an undertaking like this: warming up and making arrangement changes on the train, rushing out onto platform with a laptop and ribbon mic, singing and watching for signs that the train’s about to leave. And you thought Septa’s train shortage made for a complicated trip.

“People would walk by and look at us, but people were too intent on getting off the train and on the train,” Bragg recalled.

“We were locked in what we were doing.

It was quite an adrenaline-fueled experience, really.”

But, more importantly are the “why’s.”

The idea came from research Bragg was doing about the railroads, which left him thinking about the difference between rail travel in America and the U.K. What it all ends up meaning will come to light after the album is released on Sept. 23. Two days later, Bragg and Henry begin their American tour, coming to Union Transfer—an appropriately-named venue—in Philadelphia on Sept. 28.

Henry and Bragg will play together, then each take a solo set. For Bragg, that often means plenty of commentary about the current state of everything. There’s a chance he may not have much to say at Union Transfer—Bragg says it usually takes a week or two of watching TV and reading the news and Philly is only the third stop. But it’s unlikely he’d be silent between songs.

“When you play music you try and offer a different perspective on this world, especially on their relationships. So to just play the song and not saying anything about it, I am leaving too much to chance,” he said. “If you can find something that’s going on in the town and the

area and has a similar context to the song you wrote about something in Britain, if you can make that connection, it is conducive to getting people to understand what you are talking about.”

Right now, he says, that thing is Brexit; how the fallout from his country’s vote to leave the European Union mirrors the support of a certain presidential candidate in the U.S. Bragg talks about the rise of racist incidents in the U.K. following the vote— a Polish man being kicked to death for speaking his native tongue; a pregnant woman getting attacked and losing her baby as a result.

“Somehow the Brexit result has emboldened those people. It has somehow given them the courage for these people to express their worst impulses,” he said.

And, he sees this playing out in the U.S. as well.

“It’s that similar impulse behind the rhetoric of Donald Trump. He may not be a racist but he acts like one. He may in his heart of hearts care, but he is using discrimination to get an audience to win votes. That is really concerning,” noted Bragg.

He’s quick to add, however, that none of this is really new. Black Lives Matter is the new Rock Against Racism from his own youth, and the Civil Rights Movement before that. It also stretches back to the 30s and 40s, he said, when singers like Guthrie voiced opposition to fascism.

“Every generation has to find out how to deal with these problems. Unfortunately we can never get rid of these problems, because they are the dark side of human nature. The cynical side,” said Bragg.

But the arc of history, as he calls it, generally moves toward compassion and equality, even if at times it temporarily pulls the other way. When he and Henry come to Philadelphia, after travelling the country on the rails and singing the songs others wrote about it, they’ll be signalling the way through dark times.

The songs, then, embody more than the places, characters and love stories in the lyrics. At the root, they come to represent timeless optimism.

“A song is like a gesture,” he said. “In singing these songs it’s good to know others took these challenges and won.

We do win and we do get those improvements.”
