t’s 4 p.m. on a late May day, and Connor Barwin—broad-shouldered, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end—is ready to kick back, after having spent his afternoon at his team’s NovaCare training facility in South Philadelphia.

That he’s choosing to chill with Philadelphia indie-folk vocal dynamo Frances Quinlan of Hop Along at Union Transfer, rather than hang, say, with running back Darren Sproles or Offensive Coordinator Frank Reich at Chickie & Pete’s, reiterates something about the 29-year-old Barwin that most alterna-locals already know: he’s all about Philly’s indie music scene.

So much so, that this weekend’s third annual benefit concert for his Make the World Better Foundation at Union Transfer, features likeminded charitable comrades in two of Philly’s best known acts: the aforementioned Hop Along and Waxahatchee (a third name-above-the title local will play, but cannot be named due to contractual obligations).

These bands were not chosen by committee or hipster consensus, but rather were handpicked by Barwin because he’s seen these acts play around town. “Connor 100 percent picked the bands,” says Sean Agnew of Union Transfer, R5 Productions and a friend of the baller. “I help with booking them, as in getting in touch with the agents and working on logistics, but it’s all him. He’s a music fan.” Agnew jokes that Barwin hangs out at Union Transfer, “tackling people and knocking drinks out of their hands yelling ‘FUMBLE.” Barwin comes out to shows for artists that he likes all the time. You can’t turn around without seeing him behind you—and you can hardly see around his 6 ft. 4 in, 264 lb. frame if he’s before you—at the Troc or Electric Factory. He’s been to house shows, First Unitarian Church, Johnny Brenda’s, Boot & Saddle; goes to Coachella (“we roomed together there last year with a bunch of R5 friends,” states Agnew); hits music industry confabs such as SXSW in Austin and Non-Comm in University City; all to which Agnew exclaims, “It’s legit!” with a laugh.

“The music thing,” starts Eagles tight end Brent Celek, a player with his own outside-football interests in restaurants such as Prime Stache and the newly opened bop on Broad Street. “You know I played with Connor in college, University of Cincinnati. Got to know him there, though he’s a few years younger than me. He’s a great dude. Musically….that’s him…. I mean, he likes different music than I do.” Celek seems shy discussing their differences in aesthetics or taste (the tight end-restauranteur likes Michael Jackson, Lucas Graham and thinks that Philly’s Guordan Banks is “a beast; he’s gonna be a smash”), but loves that his pal is involved in the local community that each have adopted. How involved?

Barwin not only gives 100 percent of each show’s proceeds to city parks and playgrounds such as Ralph Brooks Park at 20th and Tasker and, currently The Smith Playground at 24th and Snyder, but he’s the guy who chooses what parks need his attention and he’s always up for matching funds for the cause.

“He’s trying to make the city a better place for people to live, no matter what he does,” says Celek. “I have a lot of respect for that. He is what Philly people love in their athletes. He’s real; gives everything that he has on the field and off.”

Barwin had a life before Philly and before music. Detroit-raised, he was born deaf with a benign tumor to blame for his malaise, but had multiple operations until the time of his adolescence to rid him of hearing problems. Yes, he can hear fine save for troubles with his left ear, and no, he doesn’t really see his craving for music due to the struggles with deafness. Besides, he was too busy as a kid playing basketball (first) and fending off his three older brothers. “My mom had four boys in five years, so I was the youngest, but we were all close in age and fought a lot,” says Barwin, smiling, knowing what comes next. “By the time I was like, 14, 15 things changed and I became the biggest one, so, instead of getting beat up… well, that stopped by 8th, 9th grade.”

Raised by his parents to pay things forward and give back whenever you were able, graduating from Detroit Jesuit High reinforced the notions of hard work and service for the public good. He also pursued a highly physical, dedicated lifestyle where he constantly played basketball and football, both, at top, All-League levels. “What drove me to play basketball and football were their levels of competition and teamwork,” Barwin says. “The camaraderie. Football though? I was just a little better. I liked the physical nature of it. I enjoyed the violence.” The smile Connor has maintained throughout this chat suddenly looks eviler.

The pursuit of this sporting lifestyle and going to school at University of Cincinnati meant that he never took his

head out of books or away from the pigskin. Yet, when drafted by the Houston Texans football team, playing there in 2009, he suddenly realized that “for the first moment of my life, I had free time. I mean—until the pros—it was nothing but playing and studying.”

One night in Houston, he discovered a small indie club, Fitzgerald’s, and his life changed. He started seeing a lot of live shows and grew fond of the bands, the space and the scene. “Fitzgerald’s is a lot like Union Transfer. I like the intimacy, more intimate than say an arena or stadium,” he says, ironic considering that his day job puts him before nearly 70,000 at the Linc. “Really though, it’s the music.”

Once he got exposed to indie rock, Barwin never looked back, and he continued with such sounds when, in 2013, he signed a six-year, $36 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Though making friends with coaches and fellow players was a must, it’s when Barwin moved to Fitler Square and began biking throughout the city that he noticed the lousy shape of many of our city’s playgrounds. He also found a connection to Philly’s indie clubs and musicians, such as Kurt Vile who wound up playing Barwin’s first Make the World Better Foundation gig in 2014. “Once you get a personal connection, you appreciate their music even more, on a deeper level,” Barwin says of Vile.

Watching Barwin hang with Frances Quinlan and hearing them talk beer and bicycling (“The War on Drugs bring their bikes from home on tour,” she says) you could sense an easy camaraderie between them.

The two women who made friends with each other when the former played the latter’s 18th birthday party in Birmingham, Alabama (“we had a pretty wild night,â€? says CrutchďŹ eld) have kept their noses in each other’s business, personally and professionally since that time. “Katie sent me her ďŹ rst solo song in the mail, then her “Bike Rideâ€? demo,â€? notes Quinlan. “Plus, we toured together in 2009.â€? Each also had pivotal years for themselves in 2015 with Waxahatchee’s ďŹ rst album for Merge (Ivy Tripp) and Hop Along’s second album for Saddle Creek (Painted Shut) making waves critically, with their proďŹ les raised exponentially.

Yet, here they are doing a free gig. “I’m not a sports person even though growing up in the South as I did, college football is everything,â€? says CrutchďŹ eld. “Still when my manager said that Connor wanted us to play, I got super excited— he’s very into local underground music.â€?

Quinlan seconds that emotion, recalling the Vile gig in 2014 and saying that it all “sounds 100 percent positive—a nobrainer—for this city and the scene.�

CrutchďŹ eld concludes that as a pro football player, Barwin could raise money with a wave of his hand, without dirtying his mitts. “He could just write a check, but instead chose to involve musicians— Philly musicians—that he likes, playing not necessarily the most accessible music. That’s saying something.â€?

Agnew takes Barwin’s involvement a little bit deeper. The man who helps Barwin book his Make the World Better Foundation gigs at Union Transfer laughs recalling the ďŹ rst beneďŹ t in 2014. “He personally yered the show,â€? says Agnew. “We got posters printed and went around Philly putting them up in stores and shops. I learned that night that he had been doing it himself for several

days throughout Center City. Just riding around alone, asking to put posters up in windows. I know people who book shows for a living who have never done that, thinking it was beneath them. Here is this big name professional athlete riding around on his bike with posters, a staple gun and packing tape in his messenger bag.� Along with watching Barwin help clean up after a show at Union Transfer (“I don’t think I ever swept up there�), Agnew tells a funny story about Barwin’s level of curiosity one night when then-Mayor Nutter bought the baller and the booker a round of tequila shots and explained his way of how to drink them. “It might sound cheesy but that’s the night I was really glad I never moved out of Philly,� says Agnew. “I can’t imagine any other friends of mine getting a Mezcal lesson from their mayor.�

For his part, Barwin shies to the notion that Make the World Better Foundation gig is all him, despite choosing bands, poster-ing, cleaning or adding funds to the proceeds of the night for whatever worthy Philly park or playground he sees ďŹ t. “As a football player, I get so much from our team, our community and our fans, it’s only right to give back,â€? says Barwin. “It’s not all me doing it—there’s Sean and other booking guys like Bryan Dilworth and Joe Fieri. These bands work for free too.â€?

When I tell him the teamwork thing seems to work for him, he stops. “Teamwork should be a thing that works for everybody.� „

The Trucks of Summer F ood truck season is upon us. Not that you can’t get street food when the weather is below zero and there’s a foot of snow on the ground, but it’s obviously nicer to dine on the street in these warmer months. Just in time for the peak season, 33rd Street Hospitality announced new menu additions for summer at their food trucks Taco Mondo, Say Cheese Philly and Street Food Philly.

Dishes like Say Cheese’s new French Onion Grilled Cheese ($7), which includes shallots, leeks and onions cooked in red wine and thyme, plus, of course, the cheese and a roasted garlic spread and Street Food’s Hot Roast Beef Po’ Boy, topped with homemade pickles and Cajun mayo ($8) focus on homestyle favorites with upgraded twists.

Michael Sultan, Carolyn Nguyen and Alan Krawitz, the culinary team behind 33rd Street Hospitality (who of course now boast a brick-and-mortar spot with Revolution Taco) take the menus for their mobile trucks very seriously. “The onions in the French Onion grilled cheese are cooked for hours and then reduced with red wine and thyme. You get that flavor of a French Onion soup but it’s all vegetarian, no beef or chicken stock like you’d normally find in a French Onion soup,” explains Sultan. “We wanted the bread to be nice and thick because it could be a messy sandwich, but we also wanted the bread to kind of be like a crouton. So you have the whole shebang of the soup.” Say

Cheese Philly can be found every Friday in June, from 11 am to 2 pm at The Porch at 30th Street Station in University City.

And then there’s The Steakhouse Burger ($10) from Street Food, an incredibly tender locally dry-aged beef with homemade garlic chili, bacon, buttermilk onion rings, white cheddar cheese, chipotle BBQ sauce and garlic mayo. Even nonburger fans might begin to crave this sandwich. “It’s something different because sometimes burgers get overlooked on food truck menus,” added Sultan. “We wanted to elevate it.”

And which is Sultan’s favorite of the new crop? “The Roast Beef Po’ Boy. Something about how the jus hits the mayo and makes this amazing gravy. There’s a little tang and it’s salty and crispy and these homemade pickles are like refreshing. It might not be the most photogenic, but it is so flavorful.”

Not only have the trio locally sourced their ingredients, they’re growing some of their own produce at their 33rd Street Hospitality garden AND making their own spices, seasonings and sauces from scratch. “We wanted to put together a menu that had the customers asking themselves why they would want to go anywhere else,” says Sultan. “You can get a chicken sandwich anywhere, but it’s the homemade touches and small details that really make the experience.”

hilly’s indie vets Good Old War headline World Cafe Live Friday with an acoustic set. We caught up with one half of GOW, Dan Schwartz to talk about the duo’s return home and their latest album, Broken Into Better Shape.

What was your time in Europe like?

Oh, it was so great. It was our ďŹ rst time over there and we were touring with Brian Fallon and he played a show a day so we didn’t get too much sight-seeing done. But we got to go to so many beautiful places.

How did the experience playing there differ from back in the states?

It was exciting because it was most people’s ďŹ rst time getting to hear about us. Our album is just about to come out there and we’ve never really had much of a release yet, we’re a brand new band, so it kind of felt like that excitement we had when we ďŹ rst started. It kind of rejuvenated us a little bit.

We weren’t the band that everyone grew up with. You know, a lot of people tell us, “Oh we grew up with you guys.â€? It’s like, oh man, I didn’t know that we’d been around that long. But playing over there it’s like we’re just this fresh young group playing for the ďŹ rst time.

Yeah, we’ve always kind of played around with that because we get to a certain point at the end of a record, like “Okay, this is great, but there’s just a certain other level we want to take this to.â€? But you know it’s not like we went to outside writers because we feel like we can’t write a good song, we do it because we want to learn as much as we possibly can about doing this thing that we love so much.

So tell me about the performance at World Cafe that’s coming up. Acoustic?

Yeah, we’re doing the whole tour acoustic, we actually just got back from Europe and we did our ďŹ rst full tour acoustic. Obviously we’re always pretty acoustic because of the acoustic guitars mainly, but this is just really cool because the songs translate beautifully to this set up, just Keith [Goodwin] and I singing. It deďŹ nitely resembles a Simon and Garfunkel thing for us. There’s no distractions so you can really hear the essence of what it was when we wrote the songs.

Then we have another month of touring and then I’m hoping we’ll start working on making another record. But I’m sure there will be a little more touring and more shows. The process of tour then make record, then tour then make record, is a process you hope to be able to do forever.

What’s your favorite part of that process?

You know it’s funny, when we’re writing I’m like, “Oh writing is the best.� And then when we’re recording I’m like, “Ohhh recording’s the best.� Then we’re touring and I love that too. At this particular moment, it’s the touring. I love that this is what we get to do and on any level, even if 10 people are still coming out and we can still do it, I’ll be so happy.

No matter what happens, whether we’re the most popular band or not, it’s inert, we can’t stop.

Tell me about Broken Into Better Shape.

Our fourth record, and it’s the ďŹ rst one we did with our new label, Nettwerk. I think it’s my favorite songs that we’ve ever put on record. And we got to really take our time and we came off a long break and obviously there were some changes because Tim [Arnold] left the band in the middle of working on it. Which deďŹ nitely threw us for a little bit of a loop. But in the end it all worked out well, because he got to get his things together and we got to get our things together and hopefully we’ll get to do something together again soon.

How do you feel about being a Philly success story?

And I heard you were working with some outside writers on this one?

Well I haven’t heard that, but I’ll take it.

Philly’s a funny city, because I feel like I was in a lot of local bands, and really tried in Philly for years. But I felt like it was really hard to get started in Philly, at least through the early 2000’s. But once we left and came back, I feel like Philly really embraced us.

That’s sort of the key that I’ve told a lot of young bands that I’ve met, is like, “Get out there, and Philly will welcome you back.� „

Don’t Call it a Comeback D

idn’t it just feel like the time was right for the Piazza at Schmidt’s to reinvent itself? Not that an urban development needs to go through image changes as often as an Instagram celeb, but it seemed like, strolling through the many-times deserted cobblestones of the grand space, the topic of what needed to be done or what wasn’t being done in the NoLibs communal retail/residential area, would usually come up.

Maybe someone overheard.

This week, several big things are happening at the Piazza. For one, the name is changing! No longer will the space be known as the Piazza at Schmidt’s. As of June 1, meet Schmidt’s Commons. The name doesn’t abandon any homage to the former Schmidt’s Brewery space, but instead embraces it full on. Matt Ruben, President of the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association said in a statement, “The name Schmidt’s Commons captures the real potential this space always had to be a gathering place and activity hub for people in the neighborhood and from around the city. We’re very glad the property’s management sees this potential.

They’ve been very willing to work with us to ensure The Schmidt’s Commons fulfills that potential moving forward.”

Along with the name change comes the opening of WeWork (on June 1) within the former brewery’s frame. This coworking center holds the promise of drawing a robust business-minded crowd (read to mean: not free concert hoards). We toured WeWork just before they finished construction, more on that later. And although it won’t see its first customer pour until 2017, Landmark Americana’s new brewpub is underway, once again bringing beer production back to the site. All this, AND Wahlburgers eventually opening right next door.

But back to WeWork. Dave McLaughlin, GM of Eastern U.S. and Canada for WeWork describes their coworking spaces as a platform for entrepreneurs and small businesses, with enough space to accommodate large businesses as well.

On site for the final days before it opens, McLaughlin showed us around the facilities, housed inside Schmidt’s 1920 brewery bones. Boasting a 350-desk capacity, the site, brimming with exposed brick and classed-up factory aesthetics, sports many of the small amenities that has made coworking so cool over the last few years: La Colombe coffee and local craft beer on tap, bike storage, dog friendly office spaces, community events and a full catering kitchen with event space.

Unique features to this space compared

to other WeWork spots (there’s a WW in 15 U.S. cities plus a dozen more internationally) include “Stadium Stairs,” created to link floors but also act as flexible event/ work space for up to 60 people and the use of the Piazza space. McLaughlin says community is at the heart of the design and that the focus has been on creating environments that facilitate that notion rather than just using it as a catchphrase.

“It’s really the word we’re talking about all the time but what does that really mean as it relates to workspace? What we see is that’s where all the business value comes from because you’re finding vendors faster, you’re finding partners faster, you’re finding customers faster, you’re finding the talent that you need to hire faster all sort of things happen by making everybody very, very connected.”

“We don’t think square feet here, we think desks. How many desks do you need, four? Next month six? We’ll move you to a six desk office,” adds McLaughlin.

They also don’t think “tenants” as they’re considered “members.” Membership rates per month range from $350 for use of a “hot desk” within the common areas, $425 for a dedicated desk (which gives you a bit of storage space within a public room) to $500-$600/per private office based on the number of desks. McLaughlin points out an additional perk of being able to utilize the company’s size for deals on business expenses like health insurance, merchant account fees and small business financing. Members so far include MeetMe (currently based in New Hope), City Fitness and PiperWai Natural Deodorant. “It’s an amazing building and the neighborhood has terrific energy,” adds McLaughlin. “We find places where a lot of good stuff is percolating. We’ve seen this in lots of cities and we thought this was one of those. What we want to do when we go into a city is become a part of the community and make sure that what we’re doing maps to the local culture.

One of the best ways to do that is to provide a space for people to come together.”

Part of that coming together means being an active part of the new Schmidt’s Commons character. WeWork plans to hold events that the public will be invited to as well as making their space open to events, so long as such events are accessible to members.

Acquired by Kushner Companies in 2013, The Piazza, as it had been called, is part of a larger business model for the New York real estate organization, that focuses on a “Live/Work/Play” environment. Additionally the name change will go into effect for the shops across 2nd

which will now be called Liberties Walk at Schmidt’s Commons. Regarding the change, Sean Gavin, Community Manager at The Schmidt’s Commons, says “We’re really excited about it. The timing is right.” He says the 500 residential spaces at the site are at nearly full capacity and that residents were looking forward to an evolution. “We’re not really trying to get away from any perceptions, so much as we’re trying to start a new chapter. People were ready for our property to go to the next phase if you will, the next stage.” But the changes aren’t just in a name alone.

Kushner has hired an event coordinator to create a full calendar of social events for the Piazza, from dances to dinners. And there’s going to be revamped seating as well. “WeWork has been partnering with us on events, like last Thursday they did a food truck, barbeque type event, open to the community, and open to our residents. We’ve been working closely with them. There’s just a lot of opportunities for synergy there. We’ll be unveiling new modular furniture, so if you’ve been to Spruce Street Harbor Park, elements like that will be here to make it more welcoming, give people reasons to congregate.”

And next year the outdoor spaces will

become further welcoming with the addition of beer. Landmark Americana’s brewpub that is, which has plans to feature an outdoor beer hall. “This will be the first time that beer has been brewed at this site since The Schmidt’s Brewing Company closed almost 30 years ago,” says Dave Goldman, co-founder of Landmark Americana.

“We’re really excited to be the ones to be bringing it back and we are looking forward to opportunities for collaborating with amazing neighbors like WeWork.” Tom Revelli, Landmark’s director of marketing says, adding that they had been searching for the right spot. “We liked the area so much. It has a large outdoor space that we wanted. We’ve been brewing for five years now and we wanted to make sure our recipes were on point and it’s all about freshness and giving you a beer that was just brewed.” He adds that the plan is to have everything on their menu made from scratch and to convert the outdoor space into a beer hall complete with fire pits, lighting and group seating.

The Kid

T

here’s this boy—he’s 29; I’m 46 and female. We met when we were 23 and 41. I was not and am not into little boys. The Kid chased me, and I turned him down for months—until I got drunk one night and caved. It was supposed to be a one-night stand, but it isn’t anymore. We’ve never been “together,” because the Kid wants kids and happily ever after and all that horseshit, and I don’t (and I’m too old even if I did). The Kid has been in several relationships over the years, looking for The One, and I genuinely hope he finds her. In my wildest dreams, I’m invited to their wedding and their children call me auntie. But in the meantime, the Kid runs to me when he hits a hiccup in a relationship, and I let him—meaning, he gets mad at her and fucks me madly.

Afterward, I get him to talk about it—he tells me what happened, and I always try to advise him how to make it better, how to make it work. But so far it hasn’t, and we’re “us” again until he meets another girl. I do love this Kid, for what it’s worth.

But I’m afraid I’m ruining his chances. I’m afraid that by being an escape hatch, I’m giving him a reason not to work on these relationships and he will never find the kids/forever thing he’s looking for. Should I let him go for his own sake? If I tell him honestly why, he won’t accept it, so I’d have to just vanish. I’d hate that. It would be worth it if I knew he met someone and got to live happily ever after. But I’d spend my life feeling bad for disappearing on him, and I’d always wonder if the Kid wound up alone. —Don’t Call Me Cougar I don’t see any conflict between what the Kid says he wants in the long run—kids and happily ever after and all that horseshit—and the things his actions indicate he wants now, i.e., your rear and your ear. He’s young, he hasn’t met a woman he could see himself with for the long haul, and he appears to be in no rush— he can have his first kid next year or 20 years from now.

And the meantime, DCMC, he has you.

Here’s where I detect some conflict between statements and actions: The fact that you keep fucking the Kid while he’s technically still with other women— first you fuck him (madly) and then you advise him (sagely)—is a pretty good indication that you’re not ready to let go of him, either. If you really wanted to encourage the Kid to work things out with whatever woman he happens to be seeing, DCMC, you would offer him your make-it-work advice without fucking him first.

Fucking someone who has a girlfriend—especially someone who has a girlfriend he’s supposed to be with exclusively—doesn’t exactly telegraph “I think you two should work it out.” So going forward, maybe you should offer the Kid your advice when he’s seeing someone, fuck the shit out of him when he’s single, and don’t waste too much time worrying about whether fucking you incentivizes being single. Because single/you may be what he wants right now.

There are a lot of people out there in loving committed relationships (LCR) that had crazy sleazy starts (CSS). But very few people in a LCR with a CSS tell the truth when asked how they met. A couple who met at a sex party will say they met at a dinner party, a couple that met inside a cage in a sex dungeon will say they met doing a team-building exercise at a work retreat, a couple that met during an impulsive, drunken threesome will say they met at a riotous protest outside a Trump rally.

These lies are understandable: People don’t want to be judged or shamed.

But when a CSS couple lies about how they met, TRUTH, they reinforce the very shame and stigma that made them feel like they had to lie in the first place.

And they play into the sex-negative, self-defeating, and super-hypocritical assumption made by singles who attend sex parties, spend time in cages, and have impulsive threesomes—these single people who do sleazy things often refuse to date the people they meet at sex parties, etc., because they believe no LCR ever had a CSS. If couples that had sleazy starts told the truth about themselves, single people would be less likely to rule out dating people they met sleazily.
