Has Sports Media in Philly Lost Its Bite? BY Michael Bradley
W
hen Andy Reid was leading the Eagles to six division titles, ďŹ ve NFC title games and one Super Bowl appearance, the media in this town couldn’t stop itself from condemning the large redheaded fellow for coming up empty. Cities like Cleveland, Detroit and Atlanta were breaking their backs for even a playoff win, but from 2000-2010, Reid was an inept heartbreaker whose inability to capture the Big One made him a villain. After one NFC title game loss, The Fanatic (97.5-FM) afternoon host Mike Missanelli wrote an Op-Ed in The Inquirer declaring that the season wasn’t a success and that anyone who didn’t think that wasn’t a real Philadelphia fan. Once Reid and then quarterback Donovan McNabb—who also took the brunt of media criticism—left town, things changed. As Philadelphia fans suffer through a period of ineptitude that recalls the early 1970s, they ďŹ nd a media collective willing to preach (of all things) patience and look forward hopefully to a future ďŹ lled with championships—at the expense of present-day success.
