Sage soda advice from a transient while riding Philly’s mass transit

KERITH GABRIEL

R

ecently, I was on the Market Frankford El train as a guy came down the car soliciting change from anyone who would listen. If you’ve ever been on mass transit, you know this is one of those multi-level cringe-worthy moments where you feel sympathetic to his plight, embarrassed for riders who are forced to make an instant decision and anxious about being the next one in his wake. I had no change to give, but I did have a can of ginger ale I was saving. In my mind, offering it up was something I considered good gesture—one that wouldn’t cost me anything. So when it was my turn to hear his story, I offered no words, I cockily gave a half smile and presented the soda can. What happened next I simply didn’t expect. SEE PAGE 14

The ongoing fight for Jewelers Row BY JACQUELINE RUPP

A

trip down Jewelers Row on a late Friday afternoon is a surprisingly welcomed break from the noise and crowds readily found throughout the rest of Center City. It’s quiet and calm which seems a bit abnormal for what is supposed to be a commerce center of the region. SEE photo: maria young
