For many of our readers, Philadelphia and its surrounding communities is exactly that. Fitting that the focus of the work on display from Oct. 5-16 at this year’s DesignPhiladelphia also follows a similar theme.

The idea of “Home� won’t solely portray where we live and where we come from—but that home is also is a distinctive feeling of comfort and of something familiar. As a unique backdrop with a strong sense of history, architecture and tradition of design, Philadelphia provides the ideal environment for such an occasion.

Over the next two weeks, countless events will take place across the city that include: panel discussions, fashion shows, workshops, classes, studio tours, book signings, design exhibitions and imaginative celebrations to raise the proďŹ le of the creative economy here in the city, most of which are free to the general public.

The opportunities for design exploration and innovation through the plethora of cultural institutions, university campuses, and fast growing entrepreneurial bases are limitless in this environment. DesignPhiladelphia will be a way to bridge the gap between designers and design methodologies to promote Philly as a center to grow new opportunities for creative ďŹ elds.

Established in 2005 by the Center for Architecture and Design, DesignPhiladelphia is the oldest design festival of its kind with a primary focus of conveying the city’s re-emergence as a modern location shaped by collaborative business practices and community engagement. Armin Hofmann: “The Magic of Color and The Power of Signs�

The exhibit features the last work of Armin Hofmann, whose impact on teaching methods within the University of the Arts’ graphic design program have been long lasting and profound.

Revolutions Rolls into Fishtown Balls, beer and burgers highlight the latest Fishtown installment.

L

ive Nation, Starr Restaurants, Frank Theatres, HSP Gaming...mega corporate ownership that doesn’t scream indie arts community. However over the past few years, all of these names have been directly associated with the renaissance taking place in Fishtown.

Add developer Sam Frank, who owns the Florida-based Frank Entertainment Company to the corporate family with their project ‘Revolutions.” Revolutions (1009 Canal Street) is part Dave & Buster’s, part North Bowl and certainly a party spot for the big kids. On Sept. 28, it opened its doors with a mega party that also showed off “Burger & Beer Joint,” a nationally franchised burger chain nestled on the second floor.

Revolutions is just the beginning of an urban entertainment district coming to life on the corner of Frankford and Delaware Avenues. Headlined by the Fillmore concert hall, and Punchline Philly, a new comedy venue, Revolutions is the latest in a plan that will end (for now) with Travinia Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar, yet another nationally recognized chain, that is set to open November 8.

In essence, the hope is that with all there will be to do, there will be no reason to leave.

“The resurgence of the area, it’s become the place to live, the elegant place for the millennials, just a great part of the city,” said Bruce Frank, CEO of Frank Entertainment. “The waterfront area is a natural draw for funseekers.”

With Sugarhouse Casino a poker chip’s throw away on the banks of the Delaware River, it would appear that the pocket of once crumbling factories around Delaware and Frankford Avenues have become a different beast. The indie spots of Frankford Avenue have held their ground even when Stephen Starr’s Frankford Hall infiltrated but soon assimilated into the neighborhood.

The Northern Liberties/Fishtown section of the city has no shortage of ways to whittle away the hours at play already, and with all of this in a less than five mile radius of the other, is it safe to assume that this is just one more piece to continue making that region of the city the new “it spot.”

WHAT TO EXPECT The “party while bowling” concept ain’t nothing new. Although many of us still prefer the purity of a Big Lebowski style stark bright bowling alley, who hasn’t been to one drunken game at North Bowl, South Bowl or Lucky Strike. Still there’s still a few things that set Revolutions apart.

but an attraction that people will drive to. It’s not like this area was ever cool, more like, just abandoned.

Slated to begin construction in Spring 2017, Frank Entertainment, which operates in 13 states, plans to bring a 14-screen movie theater to the neighborhood, adjacent to the bowling complex. Featuring what is being described as “futuristic cinema” the theater will feature luxury seating, in-theater dining, wine, beer

Lots of screens. Everywhere you look there’s something being televised, from sports to music videos.

Sounds like your typical sports bar then, right? But here there are giant screen over the lanes so you won’t have to look away from Rihanna while bowling your turn.

“This is just the natural growth that occurs when people want to live in the city, similar to the Jersey shore, people want to live along the water.” said Frank. “You have Morgan’s Pier, you have [Sugarhouse] casino. For us this was a natural progress of where Philadelphia is going to grow and you’re seeing that in the investments

Obligatory retro photos. Hipsters will really appreciate the homage to old school guys taking part in various activities all sporting handlebar mustaches. I mean, so cool, right?

Shelves. On coffee tables where you can keep your shoes. It’s the little things in life.

Pretty ass balls. This is by no means a comprehensive comparison of the balls at other bowling alleys but it’s a beautiful thing to see such pastel shiny balls for the taking here.

Super elaborate cocktails. It’s a flair bar, so you’ll (hopefully) get a Tom Cruise Cocktail look-a-like getting fancy with the mixology.

by the developers and by the city and it will probably become one of the nicest parts of the city to live in.”

Frank added that there’s a significant push from the local chamber and business owners to create a complete business district, “where you would be able to walk from either Frankford Avenue or Canal Street and include all these businesses, all these restaurants under one entertainment district that it becomes a ‘Fishtown Entertainment District,’ where people can come down knowing there’s a variety of entertainment available to them; there’s nothing like that in the city.”

Having once lived at the Jersey shore and in Rittenhouse, Frank doesn’t see himself as a newcomer to Philly. He said his intentions were positive for the community and that’s what matters.

“If you’re intentions are to improve the district, to put in as much as you take out, then I think that the locals should be supportive and even to a fault where they should get behind us and say ‘this is great for the value of our home, this is great for the quality of our lives.”

Catherine Jennings, owner of the Fishtown resale shop Keys to the Attic, who is also president on the Board of the Fishtown Area Business Association and a resident of the area for almost 30 years weighed in with nothing but positive comments about the new facility.

She said she and all of the members of the Association are very excited about the opening of Revolutions. “All of them [at Penn Treaty Village] have been nothing but a pleasure to work with, they want to be a part of the community and are supportive of all of our efforts.” She said she has not heard any criticism or concern from members of the business community about the national businesses, adding that the Penn Treaty development is congregated in one section away from the small businesses.

“They are way down at the other end, our small businesses are blocks from there. Without a doubt we’re just one big happy family here,” said Jennings.

“Small businesses, the complexes, even Sugarhouse.” She said the businesses of Penn Treaty have already contributed to the greater Fishtown area by providing street cleanup along Frankford Avenue, beyond their business area and that there are plans to improve lighting as well.

“There’s not competition, everyone’s working together,” Jennings added.

“The excess tickets from shows get parcelled out to the neighborhood, when we ask them for support for any of our events, they are there.”

WHAT’S NEXT...

Okay, we know it’ll be a cold day before residents allow this to happen, but imagine things get worse and chain venues continue to invade Fishtown.

There’s a chance we could end up with the hood looking more like suburbia.

Say it ain’t so, but here’s what we envision for the future if we ever lose the mom and pop shops:

Chipotle... Next to Johnny Brenda’s Because it’s so hipster to get your fast food in a burrito after a show.

Babies R’ Us The trendy folk will be reproducing and once they tire after a month of handmade organic diapers they’ll schlep over to big boxing it.

J. Jill First there was gentrification and higher rents, next will come the suburban folk who want to feel trendy without stepping out of their comfort zone.

First they’ll go to a kid’s birthday party at Revolutions and then they’ll be back to shop for some cardigans, with zero irony involved.

Walgreens Did you not know that it’s a national mandate that there must be either a CVS or Walgreens on every major road in the country. Thankfully Center City is being remedied of its violations here but Fishtown, they’re coming for you next! Joking, of course.

A multitude of Wawa’s Not gonna knock Wawa because their gas is cheap, its bathrooms reliable and they make a passable hoagie in a pinch, but if Fishtown goes the way of the burbs, it will be obligatory to have one on every fifth street corner.

Meek’s Beef W

hile blue blooded Philadelphians are tired of hearing it, the cheesesteak never fails to become culturally relevant beyond our city limits.

First it was the great forced uninformed cheesesteak debates of the Democratic National Convention all over national media. But now comes an even juicier beef (we must forewarn that we’re unapologetically hurling the puns on this one).

It began when rapper Jayceon Taylor (aka The Game), shared via his social handles that he made a stop at Geno’s recently. The Game, a known Instagram junkie and bitter rival of Philly rapper Meek Mill was subsequently slammed by fans of Meek following his post for its touristy lack of street cred.

Who does he think he is, George Bush? When you’re a rapper, apparently even your lunch gets scrutinized by your 7 million followers.

So this forced The Game to do a lunch redo, in which he thought it wise to venture specifically to Meek’s North Philly roots (Meek lays claim to 25th and Berks streets, but now resides in Southwest Philly) to snap a pic of a greasy cheesesteak enrobed in foil from Max’s on Germantown Avenue, he claims.

Throw a pair of air quotes on the word “went” because there’s little way to prove this meal actually happened.

Meek picked up on the inconsistencies and called The Game out on it. So in honor of this beef which included our favorite kind (sliced ribeye) here’s two more places we could see The Game “hitting up” around town, even if only in his dreams.

Insane Clown Posse O

K, so this whole “killer clown” prank nonsense has made shit real for lots of folks in here in Philly.

Locally, the biggest of the viral threats was targeted to students at Ss. Neumann-Goretti. The hoax, crafted by a 13-year-old girl made national news and creeped out a whole lot of schoolkids after threats by these clowns included abduction and murder.

Nick’s Roast Beef Visiting Nick’s is a sure way to show you know where to get legit Philly food. And what better way to start a beef than with some on a kaiser with some provolone.

But the ripples of fear these social media “killer clowns” created was quite real as late as Monday night, when this conversation was overheard at the Melrose Diner between a server and a diner at the counter—all while they both took in watching fellow South Philly native Amber Rose dance in black lace and garters on Dancing with the Stars on ABC.

Server: Hey hun, watch out for the killer clowns tonight.

Diner patron: What the fuck? Clowns?

S: Yeah they’re all over town.

Man Behind the Mask Langhorne artist puts a face on the Flyers.

T

he Flyers began their season this week but for Langhorne-based hockey artist Franny Drummond, his work began more than three months

ago.

Who the hell is Drummond? He’s only the guy many netminders for the Flyers over the past six years entrusted with something of utmost importance—their masks.

Unless you’re an NHL aficionado, you probably don’t know that hockey goalkeepers are a superstitious bunch.

Like a freethrow routine in the NBA, or the sometimes grotesque necklaces relief pitchers wear in the MLB, they thrive on ritual.

If it works, let it ride. When it doesn’t, something has to give.

“It’s a mental thing; when they put on that mask, it’s personal,” Drummond said from his also Langhornebased studio, Paintzoo, last week. “You don’t realize how much pressure is on these guys, especially the goaltenders. One slip, and you’re done.”

There’s a lot of pressure on Drummond, too. Two weeks before the start of the 2013-14 season, he was on a tight deadline for Flyers goalie Steve Mason. Mason, who has a love of zombies, tasked Drummond with creating a zombie apocalypse on his helmet. In true Philly spirit, Drummond included images of an undead Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross and George Washington during the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The concept was so interesting that Mason stuck with it but with a twist: creating zombie teammates.

“It’s pretty similar to all his masks,” Drummond said.

“He wanted his friends on the team who (he) hangs out with mostly. I’ve got to limit Mase. Sometimes, there’s just not enough room.”

This year’s version includes Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek, Michael Raffl, Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn, Radko Gudas, Michael Del Zotto and two of the team’s equipment managers on the back.

It’s a stressful task but as a former goalie himself, he gets it. Drummond played between the pipes for Neshaminy High School and he grew up “around the way” from his studio.

Drummond does have some tricks up his sleeve for later in the season. The Flyers play the Pittsburgh Penguins in a special outdoor game at Heinz Field in February, and Drummond and Mason have been planning something to recognize the franchise’s 50th season. As of now, he’s providing hints—but he won’t give everything away.

“I’ve got some really cool ideas,” he said. “Ed Snider will definitely make an appearance on there.”

The Flyers’ longtime owner died of bladder cancer in April, and Drummond wanted to pay tribute. Drummond got his in with the Flyers in 2009, when he reached out to former Flyers enforcer Riley Cote to paint something

for a charity event to benefit multiple sclerosis.

He ended up doing a panel depicting Cote squaring up with David Schultz, the most notable enforcer from the Broad Street Bullies era in the early 1970s in a piece he titled “Now and Then.”

Cote asked him if he ever painted goalie masks. He did, but never on the NHL level. Since then, he’s done work for former Flyers Brian Boucher, Michael Leighton, Johan Backlund, Sergei Bobrovsky, Ray Emery and Ilya Bryzgalov. He even did masks for revered Flyers goaltenders Bernie Parent and Neil Little for practice before the 2012 Winter Classic game against the New York Rangers.

This season, he’s designing and painting masks for Minnesota Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk, former Flyer and current Carolina Hurricanes goalie Michael Leighton and more, about a dozen pros in total.

That’s on top of masks for kids, AHL teams, college players and local players looking to add a little flair to their beer leagues. Paintzoo also does work for hot rods and motorcycles, but since hockey put him on the map, about 70 percent of the business is in hockey masks.

“Airbrushing is a lost art. It’s one of those things. People think about the boardwalk and T-shirts, but it’s a specialty,” Drummond said. “There’s a lot of things that the Flyers stuff has led to. What I’ve learned is to do everything, and learn how to do anything.”

Vulva Va Voom A question on your favorite topic, Dan. Just kidding, it’s a question about my vagina. I’m having a problem with the microbiome of my vulva and vagina. I’ve been going to my gyno for the last six months for recurrent bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. She shrugs, gives me a script, the symptoms go away for a week or so, then they come back. I understand the infections are likely due to an imbalance in my vaginal pH, but I don’t know what to do to fix this. I’ve used probiotic suppositories to boost the amount of lactobacillus and these help more than anything else, but the problem remains. I also wear cotton, loose-fitting undies and practice good hygiene and never douche or use anything scented. The problem started when I stopped using condoms with my partner, but it’s not an STI. We’ve both been tested. There’s tons of sites online talking about this problem, but no one has a solution that I’ve found. How the hell can women with this problem fix their pH?!

“I love that she used the word ‘vulva,’” said Dr. Debby Herbenick, a research scientist at Indiana University, a sexual health educator at the Kinsey Institute, and the author of Read My Lips: A Complete Guide to the Vagina and Vulva and numerous other books. “Most people have no idea what that even is!”

I know what that is! (Full disclosure: I know what that is now. I didn’t know what that was when I started writing this column.) The vulva is (the vulva are?) the external genitalia of the female—the labia, the clit, the vaginal opening, some other bits and pieces. (Fun fact: Vulva is Latin for wrapper.) The vagina, aka “the muscular tube,” runs from the vulva to the uterus. (Fun fact: Vagina is Latin for the sheath of a sword.) People tend to use “vagina” when referring to a woman’s junk generally, and while meaning follows use and I’m inclined to give it a pass, saying “vagina” when you mean “vulva” makes scientists like Dr. Herbenick rather teste. (Sad fact: Teste is not the singular form of testes.) Now back to your vulva and vagina, VULVA… Dr. Herbenick recommends seeing a “true vulvovaginal health expert” (TVHE) about your problem, VULVA, and your gynecologist presumably qualifies as a TVHE… right?

“Not necessarily,” said Dr. Herbenick. “Gynecologists know far more about vaginal and vulvar health issues than most health care providers, but many gynecologists haven’t received deep-dive (pun not intended) specialized training in difficult-to-treat vulvovaginal health conditions. And if they have, it was likely when they were in med school—so years ago. They might not be up to date in the latest research, since not all doctors go to vulvovaginal-specific conferences.”

Is there a fix for that problem?

“Yes! If everyone lobbied for their doctors to go to events like the annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD),” said Dr. Herbenick, “we would live in a country with millions more happy, healthy, sex-interested women and others with vaginas and vulvas, too, like trans men.”

As for your particular problem—a tough case of bacterial vaginosis—Dr. Herbenick, who isn’t a medical doctor but qualifies as a TVHE, had some thoughts.

“There are many different forms of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and different kinds of yeast infections,” said Dr. Herbenick. “These different kinds respond well to different kinds of treatment, which is one reason home yeast meds don’t work well for many women. And all too often, health care providers don’t have sufficient training to make finetuned diagnoses and end up treating the wrong thing. But if VULVA’s recurrences are frequent, I think it’s a wise idea for her to see a true specialist.”

A TVHE is likelier to pinpoint the problem. Even so, Dr. Herbenick warns that it may take more than one visit with a TVHE to solve the problem.

“I don’t want to over-promise, since BV remains a challenging diagnosis and often does come back at some point,” said Dr. Herbenick. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to BV, which is also why I think VULVA is best off meeting with a health care provider who lives and breathes vaginal health issues. The ISSVD is full of health care providers like that—they’re the Sherlock Holmes of vaginas and vulvas, none of this ‘shrug and here’s a script’ business.
