When opinions suck KERITH GABRIEL Full disclosure: the story Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m about to tell you has to do with a former employer of mine, the Philadelphia Union, but putting it out there that this in no shape or form is an attempt to shed light on the organization or any of its promotions.

R

ecently, I was on my scrolling my Facebook feed and up popped a post from the Union about its upcoming Pride Night. Thought nothing of it, the team has had many a Pride Night in the past, but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think this upcoming one on July 26 has ever been as controversial on social media.

One (apparent) supporter took to the comments to show his disgust for the notion that the Union should even entertain this as one of its themed nights:

This of course started a ďŹ&#x201A;ow of comments and turned the section into a forum of name calling, social shaming and â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even some gay bashing. Needless to say, this is probably not what the team hoped for when they posted, but damned if people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about the upcoming match.

At ďŹ rst, I was furious. I even went as far as to initially post aspirations that the game sold out, that the Union refund this supporter is season ticket money and even suggested buying them in support before telling the supporter to go fuck himself.

Then I remembered I have a career that I value and that season tickets are quite costly so I quickly took it down.

But taking it down also made me think of something else: despite how archaic this guyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ideology is, despite how angry it made me feel that he would take the time to share his â&#x20AC;&#x153;opinionâ&#x20AC;? on LGBTQ lifestyle in this day and age on a social forum, despite even some of the people that shared his opinion, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his right to do so. Free speech extends all modes of communication with social media undoubtedly being the most prevalent.

I think the initial shock of his audacity is what surprised and caused my knee jerk reaction, but if thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s truly how he feels and he feels the need to tell the team how he feels â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is that not his right? Debateable.

Does it make it right?

I suppose in this case also debatable.

Needless to say, this guy received a barrage of criticism who share my opinion, but not one person stopped to openly consider his. I think I actually kind of applaud him for sticking to his guns and refusing to take the post down in the face of all that ridicule for his biblical beliefs.

Edward Jaslow, Alex Kane, Maurice Berry and Harold Sharp share a bond by having served in World War II, an event that only has a handful of survivors left.

Battle hardened bromance Memories of WWII keep friendship timeless for these four veterans

E

very week, there is a table at the Corner CafĂŠ in Rockledge, Pa., that is known to bring infectious laughter, remarks that verge on the obscene, and stories that canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be found in books.

The culprits? A group of four spirited friends all over 90 years old and all World War II veterans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s put it this way, WWII is an endangered species. There are not many of us left,â&#x20AC;? said Edward Jaslow, one of the members and a 92-year-old WWII Navy veteran.

These regulars meet almost every Friday, but are known to come into the cafĂŠ on other days for the scrambled eggs and sausage. Alex Kane, an Army veteran and the oldest of the group at age 97, is the ringleader of its formation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyone we know is dead,â&#x20AC;? said Kane, a Purple Heart and ďŹ ve battle star -8/<

recipient, dismantled mines on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and is quick to respond the men mainly talk about â&#x20AC;&#x153;the girls,â&#x20AC;? but adds they also reminisce about the olden days. All the men are widowers, although Jaslow is recently remarried, Maurice Berry, a third member of the group, has a girlfriend, along with Harold Sharp, the fourth member of the quartet. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now we found a friendship amongst us, and look, we are all over 90,â&#x20AC;? Kane adds.

Kane, raised in Kensington, sits next to Berry, also proudly sporting a WWII Army hat. Berry is the only one who was not born and raised in Philadelphia. He is originally from Canton, Ohio, but now resides in Jenkintown with his Purple Heart and four battle stars. Berry and Kane were both in the Battle of the Bulge, which was Adolph Hitlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s month-long, last-ditch effort to split the Allied forces in Western Europe.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember we were immediately told to get ready to move out. That we were going to try to deďŹ&#x201A;ect whatever the Germans were putting out against us,â&#x20AC;? said Berry of Hitlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surprise attack. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We left camp when it was dark. They let the truck drivers use their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cat eyes.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; All you could see was some of the reďŹ&#x201A;ection from the truck ahead of you.â&#x20AC;? Berry remembered being prepared for the Battle of the Bulge like â&#x20AC;&#x153;any sort of combat,â&#x20AC;? but it was a battle that would leave shrapnel permanently in his leg from a grenade.

Berry and Kane noted they are active members of Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Battle of the Bulge Association. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I ďŹ rst got there, we had about 500 men,â&#x20AC;? said Kane, who still has a large bruise on his chest from being wounded at St. Vith. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Now], I would have said we were down to 34 members, but today I say 33. We found out that [Sam Ballinger]

died.â&#x20AC;?

Ballinger was in Berryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Division.

As for Sharp, this Navy veteran was actually quite reserved â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at ďŹ rst. Unlike the other men, Sharp was not as open to telling his story, a keen reminder that although the war took place more than 70 years ago, the trauma is still real for many WWII veterans. They are a generation of soldiers who fought years before PTSD and other stress disorders were recognized and before any therapeutic services were offered. But with encouragement from his friends, Sharp started to warm up and divulged his harrowing tale.

At 18, Sharp was aboard an aircraft carrier that was sunk by the Japanese. After what he recounted as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;10-story highâ&#x20AC;? drop, he plummeted into the PaciďŹ c. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be here today if it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for some good man picking me up,â&#x20AC;? Sharp recalled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was petriďŹ ed, I was young, and I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t swim.â&#x20AC;?

After the unknown man threw Sharp from the water, a submarine rescued him where it was discovered that he broke both his back and leg. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know it, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a damn good thing I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know it,â&#x20AC;? said Sharp. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was a strong [Polish man]. Thank God I was strong, and I was able to survive.â&#x20AC;?

Each man has a wealth of stories, some they share and others they keep to themselves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I talk to my daughter and son. I have told them about some of the things. But mostly they are humorous,â&#x20AC;? Berry explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They cannot visualize, I cannot tell somebody what combat is like. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impossible to visualize it by a person not familiar with combat.â&#x20AC;? After glancing at the other men around the table, Berry added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;They know what it is.â&#x20AC;?

With ďŹ&#x201A;ags still hanging high in the aftermath of our latest round of celebrating independence, Jaslow believes Americans â&#x20AC;&#x153;are very fortunate because in our lifetime we, and the people of the United States, have never fought a war on our soil.â&#x20AC;?

Unlike the Europeans who saw cities annihilated, in the past century, regular American citizens â&#x20AC;&#x153;never saw war.â&#x20AC;?

Jaslow often asks kids who want to â&#x20AC;&#x153;put their boots on the groundâ&#x20AC;? and ďŹ ght in other countries, if they have ever been shot at. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Usually the answer is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;no.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I said if you were ever shot at, you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talk like that,â&#x20AC;? Jaslow explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t regret what we did, but I hope that our children donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to do that.â&#x20AC;? South Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kawaii Kitty Cafe is reimagining pet adoption one kitty at a time

he address is 759 S. 4th St. in Queen Village, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a spot where on the regular the casual passerby will stop, look, smile, and most likely walk inside the shop.

It all becomes clear once you see the kittens and cats playing through the glass storefront of the Kawaii Kitty Cafe. While some visitors snuggle up with felines, others are in the backroom slurping down milkshakes in the brightly colored, cat themed shop. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kawaii Kitty Cafe was conceived out of the ideas of Japanese cat cafĂŠs, and the aesthetic comes from that as well,â&#x20AC;? said Dana Velazquez, manager of Kawaii, the Japanese word for â&#x20AC;&#x153;cute,â&#x20AC;? and where for $10, visitors can spend an hour with the cats. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just wanted a Disneyland for cats.â&#x20AC;?

But in this Disneyland, visitors can leave with the cats via adoption. Kawaii Kitty Cafe partners with Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, and acts as a foster home for up to 12 cats at a time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The idea is that in tandem with snacks and drinks, we can get a lot of cats housed and adopted,â&#x20AC;? explained Velazquez of the cafĂŠ that has been open since June 2016. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been pretty successful so far.â&#x20AC;?

According to Velazquez, the adoption aspect is how cat cafĂŠs in America differ from Japan, the originator of the trend.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where in Asia, the cats tend to be rare breeds, special cats that you pay to see, that you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually take home,â&#x20AC;? Velasquez said â&#x20AC;&#x153;here we have such a need to get cats adopted that I think we would be doing such a disservice if we werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t doing that.â&#x20AC;?

PAWS, a non-proďŹ t, animal rescue organization, dedicated to making Philadelphia a no-kill city, cited on its website that every year in Philadelphia, around 22,000 dogs and cats are placed in animal control shelters. More than 4,000 of those animals are euthanized.

Other than serving coffees, teas, pastries, and Kawaii specialty treats, Kawaii Kitty Cafe is determined to get its cats adopted. If around the three-month mark, a cat has not been adopted, the Kawaii Kitty Cafe team has two options: either it can think about other foster homes for the cat, or it throws a party in the catâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s honor as a way to generate interest in the furry friend.

Velazquez and the other workers have been known to create themed parties based off their catsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; names. In the past, the store has had an Italian themed dinner in homage to a cat named Spaghetti, and a pizza party in tribute to Professor Pizza, a 22-pound Russian Blue who happened to ďŹ nd his forever home with Velazquez. An upcoming event will be â&#x20AC;&#x153;Paint Pierre Like One of Your French Girls,â&#x20AC;? where Pierre St. Germaine, a black cat with a white

mustache, will be placed on chaise lounge, and visitors will sketch him.

The store also puts on other events, including â&#x20AC;&#x153;Movies with Kittiesâ&#x20AC;? and the ever-popular â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wine Parties.â&#x20AC;? For $30, visitors can spend two hours with the cats while they drink wine.

Although a cat cafĂŠ may seem tailored for a kid crowd, they have been trending on the East and West Coasts with 20s and 30s crowds. Velasquez afďŹ rmed Kawaii Kitty CafĂŠ, which has an age limit of 5 and up, garners interest from all age groups.

Even the elderly from senior homes come for therapeutic sessions with the cats. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the mission is really a safe haven for animal lovers, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a place where you can hang out and love animals without the pressures of adopting,â&#x20AC;? Velazquez said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But it also double serves as a stage to get cats adopted.â&#x20AC;?

Kawaii Kitty Cafe is the second cat cafĂŠ in Philadelphia, but the ďŹ rst with its own functioning cafĂŠ. The ďŹ rst Philly cat cafĂŠ, Brewerytownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Le Cat CafĂŠ opened in March 2016 and acts as an adoption platform for Green Street Rescue. Cat cafĂŠs may not sound like a serious subject, but they are revolutionizing the way people think about adoption â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an important message, with a purr-fectly adorable delivery. love my gender.

There is great comfort for me in being a femme-identiďŹ ed woman who lifts weights, kicks ass, shaves her legs and squeals uncontrollably at the sight of tiny animals. If something interests me: I pursue it, regardless what gender is associated. Careers, clothes, social roles, or partners are no more limited by gender than silverware is.

Misogyny is inescapably baked into our culture. As a girl, I heard that to be feminine was to be weak, silly, passive. We are told whatever girls like en masse is insipid. and that power is held by men, who are too logical to be susceptible to emotions.

I loathed pink. It was the physical representation of powerlessness, like a ďŹ&#x201A;ag of irrational vacuity. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d say moronic things like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not like other girls.â&#x20AC;? This was, obviously, before I discovered feminism.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth noting the association of pink with femininity is relatively new and totally random. An article written in 1918

by Earnshawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Magazine read, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.â&#x20AC;?

High heels were originally worn by men and computer programming was initially considered womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work: there are plenty examples of the haphazard nature of gender roles. So to argue that biological differences between men and women make us intractably different, one would have to acknowledge weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re pretty dang arbitrary about expressing that difference and that we highly privilege masculinity.

Feminism has empowered women to

enter industries, organizations, and venues that were previously exclusive to men.

Women seize the opportunity to do the things that had been denied to them, everything from wearing pants and working in ďŹ nance to having casual sex. But men have been slower to embrace feminism, many not seeing how itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s applicable to them. They still buy into the narrative of the patriarchy: that gender determines who gets to do what.

Even as boys are increasingly learning that girls can do anything, they are still told to avoid being feminine (or, interchangeably: gay) at all costs. To ďŹ nd out what things modern men are still held back from doing because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generally associated with femininity, I crowdsourced my social network and found some interesting themes emerge: Jim: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m all man. Played and watch sports. Run and participate in a number of Fantasy Football leagues. But dammit I love musicals. Always have. I must have listened to Hamilton 3,000 times. Also quiche. I love quiche.

Jonathan: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still hesitant to tell people I was a theater major in college (even casually). I leave it off my resume and LinkedIn proďŹ le.

Jamie: I used to love wearing a long black ďŹ&#x201A;owing skirt to the goth club.

Couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bring myself to do that in public, even though I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think anyone would bat an eye in Portland.

Ashley: Not necessarily feminine or gay but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d really consider being a stay-

at-home dad. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not even that I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job or that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be un-manly.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just that so much of my identity is tied up in profession and achievement. I think I internalized that as the modern manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s equivalent of strength. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big part of me that thinks that is what being a man is about and even though I know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incorrect, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ingrained into my identity.

Ben: I would snuggle my male friends more.

Andrew: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d also like greater social/cultural permission to be more open about feelings and relationships.

Several of the men expressed the pressure was far less than it had been when they were younger, or lived in more conservative places. A few also said there really wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t anything they held back from doing.

Charles: Maybe I â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as straight, white, married with kids guy â&#x20AC;&#x201C; would like to be more effeminate. Girls who are boyish get to be tomboys. Boys who are girlish are sissies.

Maybe thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a whopping double standard. Maybe even good lefty people hold that stereotype when they do things like make gay jokes. We increasingly let women access masculinity. We are less likely to limit a person from being independent and powerful, the things we associate speciďŹ cally with masculinity. But weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still denying men access to femininity â&#x20AC;&#x201C; because we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t value it.

Embracing femininity means a loss in stature. This old school messaging hurts people of all genders, by limiting men and by continuing to denigrate femininity. There is a big opportunity for men in embracing feminism, and it requires all of us to discard outdated, toxic ideas of manliness. It means no longer foisting stereotypes on kids, eradicating our romance with masculine aggression, and learning to respect that which is feminine.

It also means wearing whatever fucking color you want. Q

The Power of Pride

With Pride proving more mainstream, just how watered down has it actually become?

oday queer liberation is often represented through rainbow beer ads or Pinterest images of two femme brides. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come very far from sodomy laws and yet, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still miles from genuine equality.

Part of the problem is the gay rights movement itself.

To swing mainstream favor toward gay rights, queerness has been presented as nearly indistinguishable from heterosexuality (but with more glitter!). Convincing Christian voters in Ohio that same-sex couples deserve the ďŹ nancial beneďŹ ts of legal marriage, LGBT people are depicted as middle-class, conventionally attractive, fashionable and sassyâ&#x20AC;Ś and, perhaps most importantly: cisgender and white.

Through this marketing, LGBT rights 3+,/$'(/3+,$:((./< &20

are approached incrementally, prioritizing the desires of those who already have the most comfort: those wealthy enough to worry about inheritance rights, as opposed to homeless Black trans teenagers.

This is the argument of Equity Coalition, which created a Take Back Pride event that took place during Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pride parade. On June 18, as the main parade kicked off, Take Back Pride held a rally at City Hall with a plan to protest along the parade route and outside the additional Pride events at Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Landing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been to Pride a handful of times.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mostly corporate bullshit, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t speak to the community,â&#x20AC;? says Samantha Connors, 24, a member of the Equity Coalition who helped plan the Take Back Pride event. Connors noted thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lack of queer, trans or people of color (QTPOC) in positions of leadership, which

means their needs are put second to the interests of wealthier, white cisgender gay men. Connor adds, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pride started as a way to highlight the needs and rights of people. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just an alcohol-infused party.â&#x20AC;?

Connors also added throughout the country QTPOC are organizing to demand equal access in Pride events and those actions helped inspire the Philly protest. She said her group reached out to other organizations, including local AntiFascists (Antifa) who agreed to join as security. Two factions of Anti-Fascists: the South Jersey Antifa and Militants Against Fascist Amerika, showed up with rainbow shields and ďŹ&#x201A;ags and formed a U-shape around the Equity Coalition contingent.

Antifa is a controversial portion of leftist activism, notorious for wearing black hoods and masks and destroying cor-

porate property during demonstrations.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re militant anarchists, sometimes accused by detractors of being looters or paid protesters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Terry,â&#x20AC;? 29, a member of an Antifa faction and a Port Richmond resident says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Change canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always be peaceful, anti-fascists exist to defend marginalized groups, the most vulnerable.â&#x20AC;? As it pertained to Pride and the LGBT community, he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The acceptance element is cool. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exclusionary to queer and trans people of color â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so by that aspect, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s counter-revolutionary.â&#x20AC;?

According to Connors, the additional security from Antifa was actually useful. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The parade-goers were not violent, but the police were and 90 percent of security got injured: they were pushed over, had bikes slammed on their faces.â&#x20AC;? She claims none of their Take Back Pride participants were violent, but that police â&#x20AC;&#x153;didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want us in the gayborhood. They blocked our path.â&#x20AC;? She adds, â&#x20AC;&#x153;it was never our intention to disrupt the parade, we wanted to protest outside iCandy and the festival at Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Landing. It was our intention to be peaceful.â&#x20AC;?

Asked for comment on the accusations of police aggression, the OfďŹ ce of Media Affairs for the Philadelphia Police Department replied, â&#x20AC;&#x153;At this time we have no comment as we are not aware of such an incident happening. If anyone involved was treated in such a manner they are free to [contact] their local police district, speak to a supervisor and request to make a formal complaint. At this time we have not had anything of that nature brought to our attention.â&#x20AC;?

Police aside, Terry says the Antifa presence was â&#x20AC;&#x153;well-received.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;People weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never seen before came up, shook hands, said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re great.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in a lot of Antifa actions and have never expected to be popular. The optics are always ugly, so it was weird for our work to be appreciated,â&#x20AC;? he added.

One trans person of color who was present for the event spoke on condition of anonymity: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This reinforced that the police are not for QTPOC. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never had a good relationship with the police.â&#x20AC;?

Of the Antifa presence, however, this 21-year-old West Philly resident said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;These people stand next to me. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a difference between allies and accomplices.

Blow Globe Philly political troll social site spewing rhetoric under guise of legit news outlet

ake news.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the latest scourge on an already oversaturated media landscape. But, is it a thing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; actual fake articles consisting of misquotes, plagiarized words and slander disguised as information â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or, is it more of an insult aimed at those the outlet generally disagrees with?

It appears to be both for the latest to arrive here in Philadelphia hidden behind the guise of a legitimate news outlet: Philadelphia Globe.

Since early this year, the so-called and self-stylized â&#x20AC;&#x153;media/news companyâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with no listed ofďŹ ces in Philadelphia, no staffed reporters or editors and no original content other than snarky, right-wing comments on unsourced articles and links to stories written by other outlets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; has acted as a bonaďŹ de news organization across popular social media platforms.

And, the troubling thing is it has allowed thousands of online followers to believe the hype. But, how does this anonymous, Alex Jones-type ghost in the system amass an online following of more than 5k followers alone just on Twitter?

Especially when, in a time when members of the media are often viliďŹ ed by members of the government, that the Philadelphia Globe openly advocates for the murder of actual journalists?

This â&#x20AC;&#x153;media companyâ&#x20AC;? did just that in a tweet from Thursday, June 29, which read: â&#x20AC;&#x153;After spending 3 years inciting violence against police for ratings, you could hunt MSM [as in mainstream media] in the streets like game and America wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care.â&#x20AC;?

Or, perhaps it is because the Philadelphia Globe is little more than a right-wing -8/<

repository for commentary against mainstream news and can confuse an online audience by looking like a valid product â&#x20AC;&#x201C; while it does none of the research, interviewing or news-ďŹ nding legwork that actual news producers provide?

And, before looking at the â&#x20AC;&#x153;workâ&#x20AC;? this â&#x20AC;&#x153;media companyâ&#x20AC;? does, we should say that PW reached out to the Philadelphia Globeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unnamed creator â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a secret it seemingly wants to keep â&#x20AC;&#x201C; repeatedly across several forms of social media, asking if the company was indeed located in Philadelphia, if it created any original content or if anyone from the outlet would entertain an interview about its stated goals.

After nearly a week without reply, the Globeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s silence speaks volumes.

Especially because online, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;media companyâ&#x20AC;? has been anything but silent.

This is an outlet that proudly trumpets the phrase â&#x20AC;&#x153;Make Journalism Great Againâ&#x20AC;? on its social media proďŹ les while using a logo that steals the Philadelphia Inquirerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s masthead font, seemingly, in an effort to gain some sort of reďŹ&#x201A;ected glory from the legitimate publication.

It does so in a limp-wristed effort to confuse online news consumers into thinking the Philadelphia Globe has some validity as a publication.

But, make no mistake, the Philadelphia Globe is not a news outlet. Other than providing comments on articles written by other outlets â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which the Globe shares without citing, most often â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it creates nothing. In fact, there is little evidence the Globe is anything more than an individual with a keyboard and the ability to comment on the work produced by others.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard in this, or any city, to serve as a legitimate news journalist. Opportunities are few as cutbacks hit every publication from the smallest community papers to the largest â&#x20AC;&#x201C; most notably, the recent worker strike held against cutbacks at The New York Times.

As actual reporters and journalists struggle against the rise of â&#x20AC;&#x153;fake news,â&#x20AC;? itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to remember it takes more than a loudmouth and a keyboard to call yourself a member of the media.

But, the Philadelphia Globe does just that.

Worse, this â&#x20AC;&#x153;media companyâ&#x20AC;? claims to counter â&#x20AC;&#x153;false media narrativesâ&#x20AC;? because, as the Philadelphia Globe notes in its Twitter bio, â&#x20AC;&#x153;truth mattersâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and it does.

But, the old saying of â&#x20AC;&#x153;be the change

you want to see in this worldâ&#x20AC;? could apply here.

As, other than claiming itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s located in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Philadelphia, USAâ&#x20AC;? on its Twitter proďŹ le, the Philadelphia Globe has provided no proof that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually headquartered in the City of Brotherly Love, let alone America.

And, this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just aimed at the Globe, but how could any journalist possibly be ďŹ ghting â&#x20AC;&#x153;fake newsâ&#x20AC;? while hiding in anonymity? How can readers be certain this outlet isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually located in some other state or country?

And, even more than that, if the creator of this commentary is faceless, how can readers know whom they are getting their information from? The Philadelphia Globe could be run by someone unqualiďŹ ed to comment on complex topics, like the Unabomber, or worse, Sean Hannity.

No matter the political leaning or publication, real reporters are brave enough to put their names on their work.

Not the Philadelphia Globe.

But, instead of making wide-reaching claims, let the Philadelphia Globe speak for itself: The Philadelphia Globe slants heavily Republican, calling Democrats â&#x20AC;&#x153;idiotsâ&#x20AC;?

and progressives â&#x20AC;&#x153;scumâ&#x20AC;? on several occasions online: And, the Philadelphia Globe calls outlets such as CNN, The Washington Post and The New York Times â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which, regardless of political leanings, together have employed hundreds of journalists for decades, all of whom donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hide behind the veil of internet anonymity â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;fake news.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rasumussen Poll has President Trump´s approval rating at 50%. Never believe fake news like CNN, WaPo & NY Times.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Philadelphia Globe wrote in a comment on a USA Today story on President Donald Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approval rating in one poll on June 16.

But, not to act as a counter troll to the quite consistent trolling the Philadelphia Globe already provides, it is important for an intelligent, well-read audience to realize any â&#x20AC;&#x153;media companyâ&#x20AC;? that employs no one, only comments anonymously, steals imagery from a respected product to lift its own brand â&#x20AC;&#x201C; much like a knockoff shoe or a low-budget Bmovie â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and might not even be located in or near the city it claims to be from, is not a valid news outlet of any kind.

Respect for its audience is one hard line that divides real from fake news. Real news outlets show the story and endeavor to provide truth and facts to inform its audience. Fake news, however, wants to be the story, stokes the ďŹ&#x201A;ames of distrust in its competitors and inďŹ&#x201A;uences its audience to its own agenda.

And, even taking politics completely out of this conversation â&#x20AC;&#x201C; trusting â&#x20AC;&#x153;media companiesâ&#x20AC;? like the Philadelphia Globe that shroud themselves in anonymity as a source of accurate information would be a mistake.

No matter what the Philadelphia Globe might claim to the contrary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unlike CNN... I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make up fake stories based on anonymous sources.

Well, I actually was brought in for a different character during the audition process and got called back for [the part of Tony Manero]. When I showed up for the callback, I had no dance credits on my resume and there were people at the callback I know had just been in [productions of] â&#x20AC;&#x153;West Side Story,â&#x20AC;? they were Tony Manero [in other theaters], these people that were here their resumes were stacked and they looked like the part. Essentials for stage actor Jacob Tischler.

Tischler is the former circus performer turned actor, turned male lead in the latest production of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Saturday Night Feverâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; playing through July 16 at the Walnut Street Theatre. On this particular July afternoon, Tischler is inside his dressing room at the iconic theater debating when he should begin a steam routine to get his voice ready just prior to a matinee scheduled to last close to three hours.

A matinee where Tischler will be on stage for nearly 90 percent of that time.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good on the protein bar for now, he just scarfed down a four-egg omelet in preparation, but has the bar in his drawer on the ready just in case. Tischler also invited PW into his dressing room on this day to chat life as Tony Manero, the scene in Philly and how pleasing the boss precedes pleasing his critics any day of the week.

I like to say, in part because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the truth, that I get nervous before every show. This show is a juggernaut. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two and a half hours...and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m on stage for about 90 percent of those minutes. It literally means that I have to like stagger my pee breaks, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how regimented this entire thing is.

I ate a four-egg omelet [just before a June 6 matinee] knowing that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to be on stage an hour and a half from now. So, I need to take into consideration every single aspect of my day.

So whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a typical night after a show for you?

Usually a short walk home, made my tea, pulled my steamer out, just hung out.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re from NYC, so what are your thoughts of Philly for the few weeks youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been here?

I hope this only gets published in Philadelphia, because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want my New York friends knowing just how much I love this city. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so much to do here

I used to. But now I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be bothered.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m here to crush a job. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow that stuff to affect me as a person. As crappy and boring as this is going to sound, all actors are people and it can get to you, you just ďŹ nd a way for it to not. [Awhile back], I was on a national tour going all around the U.S., and I received good review after good review. It was for a tiny little part but I kept getting good reviews and I kept saying to myself, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hey man, this really means something!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Then I did the show in Detroit and [my performance] was called â&#x20AC;&#x153;cringeworthy.â&#x20AC;? That was the only review I remember. So what good is that to me or to an actor to have to remember doing a show night after night?

So what do you hope people take from your performance here in Philly?

Look, this is the largest contract Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve e v e r had. There are [promotional] banners ďŹ&#x201A;ying up and down Broad Street and Arch Street and Walnut Street, so this show is a big deal. You just tell yourself, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Look, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m obviously here for a reason.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not here to please

going to compete with [trying to pull off] playing like [John Travolta did in the ďŹ lm version].

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no one that will be able to recreate him walking down the street with a paint can and a slice of pizza in his hand. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s literally all he did in one scene and it was one of the best scenes of any movie. So, I just wanted to go in there and be myself and I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really the reason why the director, Richard [Stafford] liked me for the part.

Critics have said that this production lacks a lot of the things that made the movie so iconic. Some view this production as watered down and one even com-

Building character through comics New exhibition from Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation is latest in two-year run of art as inspiration in Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Logan section

wo years ago, Danny Simmons â&#x20AC;&#x201C; neo-African-Abstract-Expressionist painter, arts philanthropist, motivator â&#x20AC;&#x201C; packed up his house in Brooklyn (300-plus of his paintings, 1,200 pieces of African art, toys) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and moved to Northern Liberties.

Simultaneously, Simmons â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the brother Def Jam mogul Russell Simmons and Rev. Joe Simmons (Rev. Run) of RUN DMC fame â&#x20AC;&#x201C; purchased a second space in the Logan section at Old York Road for a combination gallery/ofďŹ ce for a Philly division of his charitable Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Two years later, I love it, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing, and I feel very much at home here,â&#x20AC;? says Simmons from his gallery/storefront where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s puttering with his new comix-focused exhibition, Power Fantastic, curated by old friend Raphael Tiberino and new pal Eric Battle (on display until July 22). â&#x20AC;&#x153;I felt at home at the one-year point between the friendships old and new and our exhibitions.â&#x20AC;?

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good, as Rush Arts Philadelphia, like its Brooklyn 501c3 counterpart, is dedicated to bringing art to young people, building ďŹ&#x201A;ourishing community for artists -8/<

of color, and an all-around adventurousness when it comes to Simmonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; own reach as he shows work around town (e.g. African American Museum, Bazemore Gallery) and extends his, and his institutional reach, to other local venues (e.g. Painted Bride, Barnes Foundation). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our goal is to get artists familiar with showing their work, but, ďŹ rst and foremost, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m an artist who wants to be shown too, you know,â&#x20AC;? Simmons says with a laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Philly demographic looks like Fort Greene and Clinton Hills did in the 90s,â&#x20AC;? says Oshun D. Layne, exhibitions and programs manager for Rush Philanthropic for the last four years, both in Brooklyn and now in Philadelphia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Logan has no other art institution within a two-mile radius.

These are people highly-interested and inquisitive about art, but feel as if thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a conversation of which theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re mostly left out. They come in on the way to the bodega and ask all the questions they need to â&#x20AC;&#x201C; if we keep our doors open, and we do.

Our exhibitions are for them.â&#x20AC;?

As with audiences, Rush works with artists as their outreach for exhibitions and curation, with the galleryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most prominent shows since opening being, in Layneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimation, â&#x20AC;&#x153;60-to-70 percent locally based.â&#x20AC;?

For his part, Simmons knows â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rush

has a name that carries a reputation and respect,â&#x20AC;? and is pleased to have his not-forproďŹ t enterprises land here. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As in Chelsea, the gallery doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exist or depend on sales to keep us going,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to expand our base, and we did. So, the philanthropy part of Rush Philly, so far, has been about making connections to form worthy programs, upon which we can fund raise.â&#x20AC;? Simmons is currently gathering heat and members for his Philly-centric advisory board (â&#x20AC;&#x153;our focus is regional, not just NYC, so this group is Philly heavyâ&#x20AC;?) and is planning a fundraiser for autumn.

All this is nice, and Simmons is a lively conversationalist, but when you talk comix, comic books and Power Fantastic, he lights up like a Christmas tree. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh man, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been a fan since I was old enough to read. And Raphael (Tiberino), he did a comix show for me in Chelsea 20 years ago, then another show in Brooklyn two years after that. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friendly with Eric (Battle) who happens to be a famous artist on his own. Fantastic,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Like Simmons and Tiberino, Layne is a huge comic book fan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This has been a topic since I started here. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have our meetings, get through with business then catch each other up with what comics the other is reading.â&#x20AC;?

Tiberinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own comix work is often dark and humorous â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like its creator â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with pen-and-ink illustrations and paintings rich with the technique, history and pride that is his heritage (his late parents, Ellen Powell and Joseph, are legends and namesakes of the Powelton Village Museum and Gardens that he co-owns and runs with his siblings Ellen, Gabriel and Latif). â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think my stories are whimsical, fun and always a little scary, I hope,â&#x20AC;? says Tiberino of his six pieces in Power Fantastic.

Where the exhibitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other 18 artists are concerned, Tiberino loves to point out his pal and co-curator Eric Battleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s painting, Malcolm 10, embraces Malcolm X and Gabriel Tiberino deals with the XMenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Magneto and Professor Xâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true inspiration: the power relationship between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If Malcolm X had the super powers this painting infers, he could stop bullets and wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have been killed that fateful day in 1965.â&#x20AC;?

Of the relationship he shares with Danny Simmons, Tiberino claims both men geek out on comic books and a shared loved of what art goes on in this town. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Danny is cutting his own swath here in Philly,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Layne says not only do the Power Fantastic curators have their eye on the prize aesthetically, but Tiberino and Battle are carrying the torch for Rushâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other mission: its educational programs where kids and young teens are concerned; teachable moments that are being shared with Frankford Avenueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse (the only black-owned comic book shop on the East Coast) as well as the Rush Arts compound. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got between 15 to 18 young artists, aged 8-to-18, coming in to learn the comic arts form from Raph and Eric, at Amalgam and Rush,â&#x20AC;? says Layne. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teaching is as much a part of what we do is presentation.â&#x20AC;?

Simmons says that the Power Fantastic show deďŹ nes where Rush Arts Philly is going because all of the comic book heroes (artists, not winged, caped characters) are emerging and young. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the core of who were trying to reach â&#x20AC;&#x201C; new or continuing artists and their audiences. An expansive restaurant that focuses on Italian inspired wood ďŹ red fare, it is located next to the Garces corporate ofďŹ ces and along a strip of the Walnut Street bridge.

The restaurantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s balcony provides a cool view of the trail and University Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skyline, which now gleams with the newly opened FMC Tower. In terms of atmosphere, you really canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t beat sipping on a Bloody Mary or Mimosa on the balcony while taking in the scenery.

One beautiful Saturday, I sat down for brunch and was pleasantly surprised by what was on offer. Usually brunch is an high-calorie, boozy endeavor, but if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re on a health kick or teetotaling, there are some great options on deck like local kombucha on tap.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking to fuel up before hitting the trail, the chia pudding with fresh berries, coconut and mint, the granola parfait made with fresh berries, shaved apple, Greek yogurt and agave, the omelet made with asparagus, potato, manchego and potato hash, or the wood oven frittata made with wild mushrooms, fontina fontal, thyme and mixed greens are perfect pre-workout options.

For the rest, one of the ďŹ rst things that comes to mind when sitting down for brunch is, â&#x20AC;&#x153;savory or sweet?â&#x20AC;? The wafďŹ&#x201A;e menu ($11-$14) lets you have your cake and eat it too, with a combo of a savory and sweet options like the duck conďŹ t, poached egg hollandaise and brandied apples.

The combination of those apples and the wafďŹ&#x201A;e is killer.

This is one of the best and most unique wafďŹ&#x201A;es youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ďŹ nd in Philly, it has a nice lightness to it and just the right amount of sweetness. Other entrees on the wafďŹ&#x201A;e menu include mixed berries with maple syrup and vanilla whipped cream, strawberries with dulce de leche, maple syrup and mint, and a classic fried chicken and wafďŹ&#x201A;e with whipped honey butter, pecans, bacon maple syrup.

Last but not least, the star of it all, wood ďŹ red pizzas ($14-$16). Options range from the classics such as pepperoni and margherita to interesting combos like the egg pizza which is made with taleggio, black trufďŹ&#x201A;e, wild mushrooms and oregano. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also the intriguing clam pizza which comes with kale, garlic, scamorza and Parmesan cream.

The interior of 24 is expansive and perfect for large groups. There is a kid friendly menu, and price points are appealing to a cross section of students and neighborhood locals including residents and employees. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let the location scare you away, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to get to and parking is ample along the bridge. The Supreme Court decided it will review the case in the fall, but until then, it ruled part of the original travel ban could stand. The opinion states a bona ďŹ de relationship excludes non-proďŹ t groupsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pursuit to put immigrants on client lists.

According to a release, the rally is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Thomas Paine Plaza with a march scheduled to follow.

The protest is one of many in Philadelphia since the November election and the latest major march in Philadelphia against the Trump Administration since April 7, when City Hall was overrun in protest of airstrikes against a military airbase in Syria.
