Krasner dons progressive label in race for Philly DA job W

ith two months until the primary election, seven Democrats on the ballot, and no clear frontrunner in the District Attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race, Larry Krasner doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have time for a lengthy stump speech, nor does he have time to pretend that this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t him against the world. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m the most progressive candidate. No one disputes that,â&#x20AC;? Krasner told a mixed-age crowd of 15 at East Kensingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hipster-friendly Martha Bar last week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In fact, they all run away from my progressive ways.â&#x20AC;?

The 45-minute meet-and-greet sounded like a Bernie Sanders remix of The Wire and The New Jim Crow, in which Krasner peppered his stories of judicial injustice with takeaway lines like â&#x20AC;&#x153;this whole notion that safety and freedom are alternatives is bullshit.â&#x20AC;?

Krasner touts his credentials as a public defender and civil rights attorney who has taken on police unions and defended Black Lives Matter (and Occupy Philly) activists in court. His platform includes promises to stop the death penalty, work to end mass incarceration and protect First Amendment rights, to name a few.

But as Philadelphia Magazine recently noted, the packed primary race has taken an unexpected shift to the left. Each Democratic candidate has at least a few policies that could be considered reform â&#x20AC;&#x201D; even if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a commitment to not accept gifts, which caused the latest scandal in current DA Seth Williamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tenure.

Krasner was one of two candidates to criticize the powerful police unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent endorsement of DA candidate Rich Negrin. In the past, he has battled with Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 President John McNesby â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a longtime defender of crooked police ofďŹ cers and a critic of Black Lives Matter protesters.

Of course, Krasner isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only candidate with progressive policy proposals, even if he is the only one touting them as such. Joe Khan, a former assistant district attorney

who's now looking to take the reigns of the department, shared some of Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s same words for the police union. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care about labels,â&#x20AC;? Khan said of all the progressive talk in the race. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Labels wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t keep our citizens safe and they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t improve our criminal justice system. Larry is a good man and we are committed to many of the same issues and causes.â&#x20AC;?

Both Khan and Krasner want to do away with the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cash bail system entirely, as does candidate Michael Untermeyer. Both promise to defend Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;sanctuaryâ&#x20AC;? city status alongside Mayor Jim

Kenney. In addition, both are talking big game about treating addiction as a medical condition, not a crime. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What separates us is that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been on the front lines doing the hard work of prosecuting powerful politicians, cops and CEOs who crossed the line, as well as sexual predators, scammers, and gangsters,â&#x20AC;? Khan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was as a prosecutor that I exonerated the innocent, agreed to expungements, and helped returning citizens with their reentry from prison.â&#x20AC;?

But the progressive insurgency in the DAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t about an ideological foe so much as, in Krasnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes at least, a chance for meaningful unity among a wide range of legislative and law enforcement leaders. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We actually have pretty progressive police commissioner,â&#x20AC;?

Krasner said of top cop Richard Ross. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We gotta work a little bit on the stop and frisk, but heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been very much in favor or accurate, scientiďŹ c, modern methodology. You have a mayor who, when heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not doing the bidding of John McNesby on stop and frisk and breaking his promises, is otherwise progressive. You have a city council with several members who are progressive. You have a state attorney general who looks pretty progressive.

And you have a governor whose ďŹ rst two acts when he came in were medical marijuana and a moratorium on the death penalty. Holy cow, right?â&#x20AC;?

Which candidate would work best with the current leadership?

Gamechanger A group of New York developers have been quietly working on phase one of a $162 million plan to redevelop a large swath of land around Amtrakâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s North Philadelphia station. The site, which planners are calling the â&#x20AC;&#x153;North Station District,â&#x20AC;? would include the construction of two new residential and commercial buildings, as well as the renovation of a long decayed 180,000-square-foot industrial building. The Inquirer reports that, if all goes according to plan, this project would have major impact on an impoverished section of North Philly that has received little attention from developers.

evin Hart continues to spread the love across Philly. First it was selďŹ es with residents of Mayfair, now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pair of surprise shows at local comedy clubs. On March 16, Hart checked in at Helium Comedy Club to watch fellow comedian Keith Robinson perform. Hart then surprised the crowd by jumping up on stage and doing a 35 minute standup show (see above).

Tuesday night, Hart is scheduled perform at Punch Line comedy club in Fishtown to test out some new material.

But an ongoing Inquirer and Daily News investigation into the Fundâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expenditures casts doubt on that original mission statement. Desiree Peterkin Bell, a city representative under former Mayor Michael Nutter, used the fundâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s credit card to ďŹ nance a ridiculous number of Uber rides (458 to be exact), meals at upscale restaurants, and purchases from Macyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and J. Crew. Could this be for our mutual beneďŹ t, my fellow Philadelphians? Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to know as much as you. Thumbs up The Free Library of Philadelphia just expanded its Sunday Literacy program to 11 branches.

elix Torres Colon, the freshly minted executive director of the New Kensington Community Development Corporation, has a lot of promises to keep.

Promises he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make, but ones that now rest squarely on his shoulders. See, Torres Colon, who replaced longtime executive director Sandy Salzman, has the task of overseeing the continued revitalization of a once-blighted section of Philadelphia undergoing its renaissance. Kensingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s once-vacant lots are transforming into new construction homes, mixed-use structures and as a result, a highly desired section of the city.

But along with all of that comes not just a changing skyline, but a changing demographic as rising costs have moved gentriďŹ cation in, and many long-term residents out in large sections of the River Wards.

SpeciďŹ cally in Kensington, south of Lehigh through Fishtown and dead ending on the banks of the Delaware River, is probably the one place in the city where parity between haves and have nots is readily apparent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have people living in homes making six ďŹ gures living next to people on public assistance,â&#x20AC;? said Mike Troca, a Kensington resident who lives on E. York Street. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are scared because they know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a matter of time before they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford the neighborhood.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easing that fear that Torres Colon hopes to make his mantle as the new head.

With much of his lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work mired in community housing and development not just in Philadelphia, but Baltimore and in New Jersey before accepting the role at the NKCDC, creating affordable housing that matches the ever-changing landscape has always been his goal.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of progression and new housing going up in our community, but we understand that affordable housing is a real need right now,â&#x20AC;? said Torres Colon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have to make sure that everyone feels a part of the same community so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not an us vs. them dynamic. We also have to be clear [to new residents] that existing residents have a very valid point of view and that their voices will be heard just as much as everyone else.â&#x20AC;?

The crown jewel of Torres Colonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s promise is the one Salzman passed on in her departure. The continued construction of the Orinoka Civic House, a $16.2 million project just north of Lehigh Avenue continues to be the headquarters â&#x20AC;&#x201C; literally and ďŹ guratively â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as the former 5-story textile mill will soon become an affordable housing structure, coffee house and the new ofďŹ ces of the NKCDC. Completion is expected this summer, according to Torres Colon, who hopes the building will push efforts of expansion to the other side of Lehigh, which as of now is seen as the hard dividing line. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s moving forward and on schedule,â&#x20AC;? said Torres Colon of the Orinoka project.

They recently had a lottery and [to my knowledge] we had 10 applicants for every unit. This shows the real demand for affordable housing not only in the neighborhood, but I think in the city and in the region. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m blessed because I get to shake all the hands but I really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do any of the hard work.â&#x20AC;?

Torres Colon noted that there is also land around the area of the Orinoka Civic House owned by the NKCDC that preliminary discussions are centering around what it could become, but that no steps will be taken without input from surrounding residents ďŹ rst. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still talking to neighbors, business owners and other folks in the neighborhood to make a decisions on it, but obviously we understand again that affordable housing is a real need right now but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just talks because we have to be sure we work with the community to ensure we make the right decision. Also know that it also comes down to constraints from the current [city] administration and the current [housing] budget that impacts what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to do.â&#x20AC;?

There is a plan for those lots, as Torres Colon noted that vacancy doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to mean unattractive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of [the NKCDCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s] ďŹ rst major activities was doing as much as possible to keep area lots clean,â&#x20AC;? said Torres Colon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the problem with lots is that no one takes ownership of them so to the extent that we help change that mindset and get community organizers willing to take ownership to organize cleanups, we have a group of folks here who are taking the lead on getting out there and changing that and we have a lot cleanup crew that just started working back up again now that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gotten warmer. We know that the drug activity heightens in those areas that are unkempt, so the better we can make it look, the more desirable we hope it becomes.â&#x20AC;?

This sense of community input by Torres Colon probably stems from a genuine feeling of taking care of family. While his job is creating homes in Kensington, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a resident. In fact, Torres Colon re3+,//<:((./< &20

cently moved to Willingboro, New Jersey to assist his brother in looking after his aging mother. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yeah, I live a block from my mom,â&#x20AC;? chuckled Torres Colon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In fact, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I moved back. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actually considering moving in with my brother, so I may not have to live [in New Jersey] anymore and hopefully when the market changes a bit, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll look to move closer.â&#x20AC;?

For now, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a drive over the bridge and into a community on the rise for Torres Colon, who believes that expansion â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for all â&#x20AC;&#x201C; will be his legacy once his run, which heads into its ďŹ rst full week this week, comes to a close. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the end of the day, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to leave and have people say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You know what? He did a good job,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? said Torres Colon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To me, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not about what I want it to look like but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m committed to implementing the vision of the community. Their vision is important to me...so I want them to look at my work and see it as if they were in my shoes, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what they wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done.â&#x20AC;? at their own new theater on Broad â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Wilma has maintained an avant-garde aesthetic that makes a suitable home for its co-founderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst play. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were isolated in Czechoslovakia.

When our theater was closed down by the government, all I wanted was to be free to make the art we craved,â&#x20AC;? Zizka said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the luxury of asking ourselves how we would do that, or what it look like - we just had to worry about doing it.

Getting out.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;ADAPT!â&#x20AC;? exists as an in-between â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a world she knew and a world she wants to know. Calling her ďŹ rst play by that name is bittersweet for Zizka as she considers Lenkaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speech to her fearful Communist overlords as well as her own journey to America. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Art is uncompromising,â&#x20AC;? the character Lenka says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no adapting. It is art versus the survival of the in-

stitution. Sometimes, though, we must ask â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what is art and what is the institution?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

To know Zizka is to know that, as a director, she is unrivalled in her quest to peel layer-upon-layer of text, then subtext, to come up with a vivid, angular vision. To know Zizka is also to know that she never wanted to write. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I never wanted to. I write my own personal things, my notes and letters, in Czech. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go to school in America and learned English from speaking, not writing.â&#x20AC;?

But a 2011 theater boot-camp taught by Zizkaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pal and fellow playwright Paula Vogel put Zizka in a position where she was forced to pick up the pen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my own workshops and rehearsals, I tell actors to open their own doors to new things, to dare to experiment,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My challenge was knowing that I am afraid to [do that] in anything but in Czech.

I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to go there, but I did, and once I noticed that I could get out of myself, my own head, Paula was very encouraging. She gave me the courage to go further.â&#x20AC;?

Once freed from fear (â&#x20AC;&#x153;or maybe not,â&#x20AC;? she laughs), â&#x20AC;&#x153;ADAPT!â&#x20AC;? developed not as autobiography, but rather, an emotional, psychedelic dreamscape in which Zizka the writer had to get out of Zizka the directorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way, while also considering her usual peeling of layers (â&#x20AC;&#x153;I could not ignore that which is obvious about what I doâ&#x20AC;?) and acting as her own psychiatrist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh, as a director I am always playing that role,â&#x20AC;? she added with a hearty laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am constantly looking at a story from behind and within for personal motivation, so, yes, I may have had to put myself upon the couch from time-to-time during this process. It was interesting to question myself and my art in that way: where did this come from? What is this connected to?

As a director by job is to analyze the text.

Now, I am the person behind the text and its analysis, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crazy.â&#x20AC;?

In an alternate universe in North Philly, a white Republican woman running to represent an overwhelmingly Democratic minority district wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stand a chance.

But these are not normal days.

As of Tuesday, Little was the only candidate on the ballot for Tuesdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s special election to replace former State Rep. Leslie Acosta. With a ďŹ&#x201A;otilla of write-in campaigns â&#x20AC;&#x201D; including two from the Democratic and Green Parties, which blew their chances of getting a candidate on the ballot proper â&#x20AC;&#x201D; victory was far from guaranteed. As of presstime on Tuesday, no winner had been declared.

But if elected, Little will owe as much of her victory to the failings of the local Democratic party as to her agile maneuvering of the partisan divide.

In an interview with PW, she pointed out that the last two state representatives for the 197th were Democrats who left with felony charges to their names. She also points out that the original Democratic nominee for this race, Frederick Ramirez, was bounced from the ballot after a Commonwealth Court judge ruled that the candidate did not meet residency requirements. (An attorney for the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Republican party ďŹ led the lawsuit.)

But on the ground, Littleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign stuck to bread-and-butter issues and avoided the more toxic trappings of the GOP, despite the fact that she voted for Donald Trump. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People have the same complaints now that they did 20 years ago,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a narrative we should be hearing. So you need to give me a chance to make a difference. If I fall ďŹ&#x201A;at on my face, well, in the next election, make a change. But at this point I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think we have anything to lose.â&#x20AC;?

On immigration, Little breaks from her partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s platform. Philadelphia is â&#x20AC;&#x153;a melting pot,â&#x20AC;? she says, noting the diversity of the 197th District. If elected, she promised not to back legislation that would punish Philadelphia for upholding Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;sanctuaryâ&#x20AC;? policy, which limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

She also emphasized the need for education and workforce development in what ranks among the poorest districts in Pennsylvania. But she would not get into details about how she would bring jobs back to post-industrial landscape of shuttered factories that stretch across the district. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have ideas, but I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t elaborate on them all right now because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have all the facts,â&#x20AC;? Little said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My background is research, so I tend to research the heck out of everything before I open my mouth.â&#x20AC;?

If elected, Little knows that she would have essentially one year to establish herself as an independent voice and gain enough favor among the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 85 percent Democratic base to survive a challenge from the dominant party in 2018. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a year and nine months that I have to prove myself and make a difference,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I work right now from 5:30 in the morning until 7 or 8 at night, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll bring that same dedication to the House. This kind of corruption is expected; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s part of doing business, as well as getting out of trouble. We heard story after story of normalized extortion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One time a policeman stopped me and then walked me to the ATM,â&#x20AC;? a tour guide told us, â&#x20AC;&#x153;another time all I had was a Coca-Cola and he was thirsty, so he just took that and left me alone.â&#x20AC;?

The trafďŹ c and the corruption may seem unrelated, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re both results of a nation mangled by colonialism and decades of war. Cambodians have learned to be resourceful, as well as even-keeled in the face of trauma and injustice. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You held an election recently?â&#x20AC;? our taxi driver asks us. We dread this question â&#x20AC;&#x201C; now we have to talk about Trump â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but we grumble afďŹ rmatively. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You are very lucky,â&#x20AC;? he says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;you get elections every four years. We have had the same guys for decades.â&#x20AC;?

Next door to Cambodia thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Thailand, a much wealthier nation, which we also visited. Technically it has a king, but military coups have been a regular occurrence since the 1930s, the latest one just 3 years ago. The current junta is oppressive: they declared a nationwide curfew, banned political organizing and censor the internet and its media. Meanwhile, after the long-ruling king died last October, the royal family declared that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; out of respect to their mourning â&#x20AC;&#x201C; no one could get married for a year. If you think about it (and I did), itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s people put up with repression from two different forms of government, simultaneously.

The weeks in Asia raced by and we headed home. While I was grateful to get back to westernized plumbing, I was not amped to return to a herd of elephants or the latest tweetstorm from our President.

The corruption of Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cronyism and nepotism is infuriating, but the takeaway is, I suppose, that it could be worse. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s both an optimistic mantra and a warning.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been fortunate to know governmental stability in my lifetime, to avoid war on my doorstep, to have (in theory, anyway) an impartial justice system. All of these things are not a luxury to take for granted. This means recognizing the privilege that comes from living in a nation built on both colonialism and principles of valor.

And it means vigilance and resistance, aiming not to return America to some previous idealized state, but to build it towards the great nation it can be. Q

Sex in Tacony: Members Only Neighbors in NE Philly neighborhood mulling proposed sex club

T

he new proprietors of the historic Tacony Music Hall are planning to convert the three-story ofďŹ ce building into what they prefer to call a â&#x20AC;&#x153;sex-positive community center.â&#x20AC;? But before any of that happens, some regular neighborhood folks will meet there ďŹ rst.

The Tacony Civic Association will host a public meeting at the hall on Thursday night to review a zoning application that the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s owner has ďŹ led on behalf of the newly formed Philly Music Hall LLC, an entity created to set up and oversee the operation of the membersonly club. The meeting will start at 7pm The hall is at Longshore Avenue and Edmund Street.

According to zoning documents being circulated by the civic association, the club must obtain a city permit that will allow it to present â&#x20AC;&#x153;live entertainment for more than 50 peopleâ&#x20AC;? if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to operate legally. The cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Licenses and Inspection has categorized the proposed use as a nightclub or private club. Such a use requires a special exception in a commercial zone. The proprietor must ultimately appeal to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zoning Board of Adjustment for the special exception. But in accordance with the zoning code, the community gets to review the plans ďŹ rst.

Members of the civic association expressed uncertainty about the proposed club during their bi-monthly general meeting on March 8. They wondered aloud about the nature of the sexual activity that may occur there, if alcohol would be served in the club and how it all might impact the neighborhood.

They pondered if the people behind the club were the same as those who tried and failed to start an alleged after-hours â&#x20AC;&#x153;swingersâ&#x20AC;? club in the former Rosewood Caterers last May. One of Philly Music Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s principal organizers, Deborah Rose Hinchey, insists that her groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effort has nothing to do with what happened at the Rose3+,//<:((./< &20

Hinchey said that her group is striving to create â&#x20AC;&#x153;a community center serving those who are marginalized for their sexual identities.â&#x20AC;? As a group, they refer to themselves as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;alt-sex community.â&#x20AC;? The term covers those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or transsexual, as well as those who identify as queer, intersex or asexual and those

DeďŹ nitely not, she said. Intoxication can undermine the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal of offering members a comfortable, safe venue for sex between or among consenting adults.

Nobody under 18 will be permitted.

Whether the community and the zoning board sees the Music Hall as a ďŹ t for the club will be determined later. The red-brick Victorian building has a distinguished history as a community landmark.

Completed in 1885, it sits in the original Disston Estate and as such is subject to a deed restriction banning the production or sale of alcohol on site. Originally, it served as an entertainment hall, library and community center for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;company townâ&#x20AC;? populated by the employees of Henry Disstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s saw works and their families.

In 1965, the zoning approved its use as a furniture warehouse. Louis and Antoinette Iatarola bought the building in 1989 and established a real estate agency there. The building also became home to the archives of the Tacony Historical Society under the leadership of the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, Louis M. Iatarola. In 1995, the zoning board approved the opening of a child daycare on the ďŹ rst ďŹ&#x201A;oor. About ďŹ ve years ago, the Iatarolas allowed the Tacony Community Development Corporation to set up an ofďŹ ce there.

Last year, the Iatarolas decided it was time to sell the building. Harry Leff bought it for an undisclosed price in December. The cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s online property records do not reďŹ&#x201A;ect the latest sale.

According to Louis M. Iatarola, Leff and Hinchey toured the building together before the sale but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go into much detail about how they planned to use it.

oore College of Art transforms itself into all things animation celebrating women in the ďŹ eld for an entire weekend. In conjunction with Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s History Month, this four day ďŹ lm festival will showcase ďŹ ve animated features and thirty short ďŹ lms, all created by women. Each ďŹ lm chosen from a pool of applicants that includes Moore students and alumni.

Meet the artists, jump into discussions, and listen to an all-female panel of game designers, speak about their creative process, careers and how they are trying to affect positive change in the industry.

Following a Q&A session with the audience there will be a reception with panelists and speakers.

The festival gets under way on Thursday evening with a discussion from Lauren Brown of EA Games, Harley Dwortz from Rooster Teeth Productions, and Melissa Soest from BioWare. As all of the panelists discuss their respective trajectories and how they came to be leaders in game design.

On Friday, Canadian-Asian ďŹ lmmaker Ann Marie Flemingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Window Horses, which features the voices of Sandra Oh and Ellen Page, follows the story of a young poet who gets mixed up believing her father abandoned her only to ďŹ nd that what she had been told as a child may not be the whole truth.
