Peace out, whale mural Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably one of Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most incongruous murals: humpback whales ďŹ&#x201A;oating above the brackish waters of the Schuylkill River, where no humpback whale could likely survive for more than an hour. Painted during a six-day frenzy in 1993 by artist Wyland, the days of the highly visible mural at 2400 Market Street are limited. The building that holds up the mural is currently being gutted to make way for Aramarkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new headquarters. So grab one last photo of these sea giants before theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re gone.

Another reason to hate the PPA Before the sexual harassment scandal that led to his disgraced resignation, Vincent J. Fenerty Jr. made $223,000 a year to run the Philadelphia Parking Authority. But unemployment came with its perks. Fenerty pocketed $227,238 for nearly 2,000 unused comp days accrued from his three decades on the job. He also collects a record-holding $158,628 pension. And now, according to an Inquirer report, the handsy ex-parking executive nabbed an unusual benefits deal that guarantees him 15 years of health insurance valued at $119,050.

Just when we thought the PPA couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be any more of a bureaucratic embarrassment, another Inquirer report revealed that, over the course of ten years, Fenerty had okeydoked $100,000 in no-bid PPA contracts for his close buddy, the ever-popular SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;workâ&#x20AC;? included a variety of things, from professional analysis of the Authorityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s red light program to, uh, $3,000 for clipping news articles.

A solution to the overdose epidemic?

Opioid overdoses killed 910 people in Philadelphia last year, and tens of thousands across the country. For the first time ever, city and health officials are considering the idea of opening safe injection sites in which addicts could use drugs under medical supervision, A proposal introduced at the Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Task Force to Combat the Opioid Epidemic last week outlines a plan to create these philanthropically funded centers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; read: not paid for with tax dollars â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in Philadelphia most heroin-ravaged neighborhoods. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a divisive concept, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demonstrable evidence that it would save hundreds of lives each year.

Birds beef up offense

tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impossible to keep up with the steady caravan of musical acts that descend upon Philadelphia. Expect another robust rundown of big-name bands, great festivals and intimate stage acts as the continuation of a musical renaissance in the City of Brotherly Love continues in 2017.

From rock to hip-hop, from jazz to cabaret, multiple venues are lining up to put someone on their bill thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll make you open your wallet. We took a look at all the acts heading to Philly over the next few months. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our wish list of shows where we want to be in the front row.

Quasi-local connection: The Menzingers Punk rock by way of Scranton. We are picking up what this quartet is putting down with the release of their ďŹ fth studio album, â&#x20AC;&#x153;After the Party,â&#x20AC;? in February. Little-known fact (or largely known if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a devout fan) these guys have their own beer, an ale created by the brewmasters at Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company following their latest album release. | March 31, 8pm. $22. New age classic: Minus the Bear For over a decade, the indie-rock group has always been the cusp of going mainstream with its sound, but has managed to capture massive crowds and still stay in the niche category. The other piano man: John Legend A man and his piano is a beautiful thing. John Legend and his piano, however, borders on the transcendent. Captivating audiences for almost a decade, the Legend returns to the Delaware Valley for a night on the Camden waterfront. The Penn grad will be in town for one night and, at the time of this report, tickets were priced pretty reasonable. Canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it that evening? time landlord. It was a prayer answered, especially after South Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commercially turbulent winds over the last decade.

Everyone has a theory as it pertains to South Streetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lost steam. Did the 2008 recession lead to a glut of vacancies? Or did it start before that, when the Center City real estate boom changed both the commercial and residential fabric of South Street?

South Street Renaissance?

How Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest guitar store survived the decline of South Street

since 1998.

Of course, this sort of change isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exceptional.

Since the 1700s, the South Street corridor has seen many different chapters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the original southern border of William Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Philadelphia, newfound home to emancipated African Americans, European immigrant hub, theater district, epicenter of queer Philly â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and the latest one, the rise and fall of a commercial cool on South Street, hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite decided if or how itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to end.

ich Chodak runs his hand down a stringless dark-bodied acoustic guitar and says heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to get into conspiracy theories about the rise and fall of South Street. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Look, since South Street took a downturn, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s affected us,â&#x20AC;? says Chodak, owner of Bluebond Guitars on S. 4th St. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still here.â&#x20AC;?

By his estimate, maybe 10 percent of the corridorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current business stock can claim to have been around for more than a decade. Ishkabibbles and Giovanniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Room have been around since the late â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70s. Jimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Steaks is timeless.

Bluebond is quiet at 1 p.m. on a WednesBut itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easier to name the places that day afternoon. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not much to the didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it over the years. Put aside cramped storefront: guitars, effects pedals, more recently lost landmarks â&#x20AC;&#x201D; rest in and related accoutrement for sale in the peace, Pearl Arts â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and look at the music front; repair workshop in the back; and scene alone: the Theater of the Living Arts practice spaces on the second and third and Bluebond are among the last stand- ďŹ&#x201A;oors. Chodak says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They feed off each other.â&#x20AC;?

You also need to own your own business, he notes, especially in an area with inďŹ&#x201A;ated rents like South Street. Dale Bluebond, Chodakâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friend and mentor from their native Cherry Hill, opened the shop in 1989. Since then it has changed locations three times, but always stayed within a few blocksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; radius of the current location.

And today, at 27 years old, it holds the title of longest standing guitar shop in the city (pawn shops excluded).

Bluebondâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or survival, if you want to call it that â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is largely due to its roots in the community. When he took over after Dale Bluebondâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, Chodak kept the business in the area. When rents went up, Chodak stayed in the area. And because of that, some of the storeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s adult regulars have frequented the spot since they were kids with wide-eyed dreams of rock nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; roll.

To Chodakâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good fortune, he was able to purchase their three-story building on Fourth Street a few years back from a long-

Until the 1990s, South Street was bursting with traditionally mixed-use momand-pop stores. Business downstairs, apartments upstairs. Today, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still more of the latter than the former. Chodak has his theories, but he wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say them on the record. He did offer one anecdote, though. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Look at the old Pearl Arts location,â&#x20AC;?

Chodak says, referencing the erstwhile art supply haven that shut its doors in 2014 after 81 years in business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A dance studio opened up in the same location for a year, and then it closed. Now thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Kicks USA there.â&#x20AC;?

Maybe only brand names can survive the high rents. Maybe South Street isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a place to start a new business. Maybe thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a reason young entrepreneurs and artists have migrated beyond the fringes of Center City in the last decade. But each industry has had its woe, too.

In the early 2000s, the emergence of big box music stores forced mom-and-pop music stores to adjust their model. Then came along Craigslist, Amazon, and a host of music equipment retail websites like Sweetwater.com.

For Bluebond, that meant ďŹ nding a niche market for used gear, offering a more interesting selection. Guitars are still steady business. Most musicians canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford to keep buying new. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every guitarist is always searching for that perfect tone. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always trading in and buying up, and most musicians need to buy used,â&#x20AC;? Chodak says.

Would he love to grow the shop? Of course. But demand for lessons and equipment ďŹ&#x201A;uctuates over the years. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as strong as it was in the 90s, he says. But his model of repairs, retail, and lessons keeps business steady. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wish I could say itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some brilliant business scheme, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really just that trinity that keeps us going,â&#x20AC;? Chodak says.

For now, whatever comes next for South Street, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no reason to expect Bluebond wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a part of it.

This is, after all, a kid who ran through Bach cantatas when he was barely out of the crib and appeared on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oprahâ&#x20AC;? and Jay Lenoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tonight Showâ&#x20AC;? (where he blithely dissed Aerosmith) before he was 8 years old. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important for me,â&#x20AC;? Bortnick says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Keeping a level head is easy because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m always with my family, and despite everything good thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happened, I really have had a normal childhood. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been lucky. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a smooth ride.â&#x20AC;?

Plus, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cool with Aerosmith at this point in his life. His original judgment of them stemmed from age 8 during his debut concert in Las Vegas. It was the ďŹ rst show he had performed outside of Florida and he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care for the rock legendsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; volume level at the time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now I do,â&#x20AC;? the 16-year-old Bortnick says.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not all about the art and glamour, though. When heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not covering Chopin, hanging out with BeyoncĂŠ, Andrea Bocelli and Tony Bennett, Bortnick isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t averse to tossing a football, ďŹ ddling with video games and playing with school friends. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some days however I just want to write a song. Look, I happened onto music accidentally, and just realized how amazing it all was,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Bortnick attended a Montessori pre-school, back when piano lessons were being offered. Curious to learn but without a musical family â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;and I mean, I was 3, face itâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it simply wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in the cards.

Then got a toy piano for his second birthday, and began mimicking everything that he heard: television shows, classical recordings, jazz

improvisations, all of them with icy precision. It was immediately clear that he was gifted with perfect pitch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got the piano lessons pretty quickly after that,â&#x20AC;? he laughs.

He matured from the usual classical catalog of riffs on television and began to ďŹ nd his own voice as a composer, ďŹ rst with 2010â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ethan Bortnick and His Musical Time Machine.â&#x20AC;? He made his dramatic ďŹ lm debut with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anything is Possibleâ&#x20AC;? in 2013, in which he co-scored the movie and wrote 10 original songs. He is currently ďŹ nishing up his next album, one he says that is mostly pop, but surely beneďŹ ts from his usual jazz, classical and R&B inďŹ&#x201A;uences. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be honest, at 5 I was only just discovering I could make my own sounds. By 10, I was able to experience more and travel more.

Those inďŹ&#x201A;uences seeped in and the idea of writing about my own life evolved,â&#x20AC;? he says.

Bortnick can maneuver between soul-pop, Broadway-esque tunes to what he likes to call â&#x20AC;&#x153;spontaneous writingâ&#x20AC;? on stage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my favorite, that improvising. I bring someone onstage, they play me their ringtone or tell me a story, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll compose a song from there. I love doing that. I love audience interaction. I just love to write.â&#x20AC;?

And despite having been in the public eye since he was 3, and that most of his major life moments can be watched on YouTube, he recalls every appearance with fondness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never a shock seeing myself on that old footage,â&#x20AC;? he laughs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never too weird.â&#x20AC;? Meet the Philly music task force Can City Council inject new life into Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s music scene?

t was just over a year ago that Councilman Mark Squilla proposed an idea that could have destroyed Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s credibility as a music destination.

The now-scuttled bill sought to create a registry of all bands and DJs that play in Philly. Before taking the stage, the city would require the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all performers, and worse, it would reserve de facto veto power over any performance that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t abide by nannyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rules.

Thankfully, City Council is now looking for more thoughtful ways to shape the Philly music scene for the better.

Last week, Councilman At Large David Oh hosted the inaugural meeting of the Philadelphia Music Industry Task Force, a panel of 15 music pros who will generate ideas for pro-growth legislation and nix horrible ideas like performance registries before they start.

According to Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legislation, the task forceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purpose is to consider the history of the Philadelphia music industry and develop a strategic plan to transform Philly

the ambitiously titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Center of the World Music Industry.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too early for any details about the plan, but one thing is clear: Council is staying on the sidelines until theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re needed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not a musician or anything, so theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll do their thing,â&#x20AC;? Oh said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For example, do we need tax credits? How do we capitalize on who we are as a city? Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not New York. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not LA. Who are we?

How do we reach out globally and work with our universities?â&#x20AC;?

Nominated by Council and Mayor Jim Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce, task force members include musicians, composers, lyricists, academics, business types, and industry insiders.

Among them is Philly rapper Eric â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chillâ&#x20AC;? Moody, who views the task force as a bridge for artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs and concerns. To his mind, Philly could be the music mecca. But in a legislative body with dozens of commissions, committees, and task forces, what are the chances of that kind of progress here? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to let this fall by the wayside,â&#x20AC;? Moody told PW. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something I wanted to do since before it even became an idea, to somehow work with the city and

make sure that they are doing right by the independent artists in the city.â&#x20AC;?

At its ďŹ rst meeting, the task force tagged a few other big cities as models for music industry growth â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Nashville, Austin, and Seattle, to name a few. From Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspective, Oh insists that no ideas generated by the task force will go unconsidered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The folks [on the task force] are non-political,â&#x20AC;? he noted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The challenge for me after that is how do I get it passed legislatively, how does the mayor implement it, and how to we get it funded. But we really just want best ideas from them and a set of marching orders and to oversee the process so that nothing lags behind.â&#x20AC;?

With big ambitions, however, it remains unclear whether the task force will devote any of its energies to Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s struggling and unproďŹ table underground music scene.

The lethal blaze at Oaklandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ghost Ship artist collective last December brought intense scrutiny to the DIY music scene in major U.S. cities, and Philly was no exception.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections has continued to crack down down on sub-code venues in all corners of the city, according to numerous media reports. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hopefully weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll start up some type of town halls where people can express those concerns,â&#x20AC;? Moody said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And while those are concerns, my main concern is the artists, making sure that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting all the beneďŹ ts that they really deserve and that we have to offer and to offer new opportunities to be funny in the city. But that comes with venues and not having venues shut down because of L&I.â&#x20AC;?

Moody then paused and added: â&#x20AC;&#x153;People got to know what the problem is to ďŹ x the problem.â&#x20AC;?

s it pertains to the subject of natural energy, Philadelphians have received some pretty sweet advice all this week from the Dutch.

Wait, what?

The 2017 Philadelphia Flower Show opened March 11 and runs through March 19 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theme, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Holland: Flowering the World,â&#x20AC;? celebrates Dutch leadership in sustainable technology and tradition in natural energy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Holland produces over 70 percent of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bulbs,â&#x20AC;? explained Sam Lemheney, head of events at the Philadelphia Flower Show. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll showcase Hollandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sustainable and green design as well as their practices and innovative techniques, 3+,//<:((./< &20

which are on the forefront of the industry.â&#x20AC;?

The program will speciďŹ cally highlight the Dutch Wave Movement, which approaches landscape design in an ecofriendly way. Award-winning landscape architect Nico Wissing helped create the

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Reconnectionâ&#x20AC;? exhibit to portray a natural landscape for plants, animals, and humans utilizing natural resources, that are already present in a particular environment, like rainwater. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The entire natural climate is positively inďŹ&#x201A;uenced if we take into account biodiversity, climate adaptation, and the use of products and materials with a small ecological footprint in our own environment,â&#x20AC;? Wissing explained.

Upon entering the exhibit the ďŹ rst garden, visitors are welcomed to over 30,000 ďŹ&#x201A;owers and an Amsterdaminspired bridge with Delft tile patterns.

Visitors also experience vibrant ďŹ&#x201A;oating ďŹ&#x201A;ower ďŹ elds and a traveling, 36-foottall eco-dome. Through vibrant ďŹ&#x201A;oral displays, the event hopes to bring Dutch green inďŹ&#x201A;uence to metropolitan areas, like Philadelphia.

Plus, urban sustainability has always been a central component to PHSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; mission. The organization participates in several year-round programs like community gardening, tree planting, and citywide beautiďŹ cation, which the eventâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proceeds will go towards.

This type of community involvement also enables larger projects all over the city like the Rail Yard, a .25 mile aboveground plaza similar to Manhattanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s High Line, and Cloud 9 Rooftop Farm, a nonproďŹ t that brings lively gardens to apartments.

The ďŹ rst ever Philadelphia Flower show was held in 1829 at the Masonic Hall, where the poinsettia was introduced to the American public for the ďŹ rst time. Now, the event attracts over 250,000 attendees a year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the largest event of its kind in the United States. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is something here in this Philadelphia area, second-to-none in the country, probably one of the top three shows in the world from a horticulture and design standpoint,â&#x20AC;? Lemheney added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think green is pretty, using native plants and such, The Dutch have learned how to use plant materials to think sustainability.â&#x20AC;?

Lost art?

An intimate look at the current state of burlesque in America

ike Pilates, kombucha or Kwanzaa, burlesque is something most people have heard of â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but only a few can give an accurate description.

For many, burlesque elicits images of feather fans, rhinestone-covered cleavage, and the Razzie award-winning Christina Aguilera ďŹ lm.

From the Early days of dancing girls donning ďŹ&#x201A;esh colored tights to the heyday of 1950s starlets like Lili St Cyr and Tempest Storm, the art form evolved and was often presented in tandem with live music and vaudeville comedy. Though nearly driven to extinction by the rise of commercial strip clubs and mainstream access to hardcore porn in the 1970s, a neoclassical revival in the 1990s led to a rebirth of sort.

Burlesque is now available in nearly every major American city on a nightly basis, with everything from classic tease to nerdy pop culture homage.

of musical theater and commercial acting.

Now as the producer of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nudey Tunes,â&#x20AC;?

Ardiente looks to ďŹ nd balance between these opposing forces in her new show, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prohibition.â&#x20AC;? It combines an explicitly political storyline with comedy and live music, using a cast that is entirely queer and majority people of color. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think other art forms, especially physical ones, can take a cue from burlesque and be more accepting of diversity in bodies and sizes,â&#x20AC;? Ardiente says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All bodies can be effective tools for communication. Sexy doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look any particular way.â&#x20AC;?

And in the case of what to expect with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Prohibition?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think anyone in Philly is producing this particular blending of burlesque, live music and theater,â&#x20AC;? she added.

With that said, enter comedian Liam Mullone, who ďŹ nds burlesque performance inherently unsexy. Mullone has repeatedly argued against encouraging women to strip for fun and personal expression. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stripping should be the preserve of students, immigrants, single mothers and other hardworking people who are trying to get to the next rung where, we hope, they can do something else,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The people enjoying [that] lifestyle are choking and denigrating those who are trying to have a life.â&#x20AC;?

Frankly, he has a point.

In lieu of conservative objections to moral turpitude, today the industry faces internal debate about making sure compensation for professional artists isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t driven down by producers exploiting amateurs willing to dance for free. As striptease dance classes and pole ďŹ tness booms, burlesque has become a thing that theoretically, anyone can do.

Arguments within the industry also show a precarious balance between the antagonistic origins of the art and progressive values of many of the performers.

Take, for instance, the recent kerfufďŹ&#x201A;e at the Toulouse Burlesque Festival in Paris, after dancer Fafa Bulleuse did an homage to Nina Simone wearing black face and an afro-wig. Several of the other scheduled performers voiced objections, but producers insisted free speech took priority over concerns of racial appropriation. Refusing to be a part of an event that would include such an act, eight of the offended burlesquers walked out.

When it comes to the intersection of burlesque and race here in America, there have been numerous performers of color who voiced concerns about lack of equal opportunity, and who questioned the lack of adequate representation. Though most of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performers identify as feminist and socially conscious, the entwined history of burlesque with early century minstrel shows has residual implications.

Modern burlesque faces the proposition of sticking to its roots by being intentionally provocative, even offensive â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or becoming a safe space for people of all genders and bodies to feel empowered sexually.

Maybe both.

As both a long-standing tradition and an art form built on subversion, there are a lot of potential directions for modern burlesque. Increasingly mainstream and commercially viable, burlesque risks losing its countercultural edge. In fairness, this is in reference to what has always been a tawdry and cheap form of distraction for the uncultured working class. It combines extravagant costumes with cheap thrills, reďŹ ned skill with pitiful silliness.

Wishful Kinking DAN SAVAGE I went to Dark Odyssey Winter Fire, the big kink hotel takeover event in Washington, DC, in February. There was one thing I saw there that is messing with my head, and I hope you can set me straight. There was this lovely little six-person orgy going on with two cute-as-could-be hippie girls and four older dudes. Then these four people came along.
