Neighborhood Watch list Real estate website RedFin released its predictions for the fastest rising neighborhoods in 2017. In order to become legal in Philly, ridesharing services Uber and Lyft agreed to pay two-thirds of one percent of their revenues to the School District of Philadelphia. Last week, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania cut Philly schools their first check from these dividends, adding $357,593.31 to the bank for education.

Soda sales down Some drink distributors and grocers say sugar-sweetened beverage sales have dropped as much as 50 percent since the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soda tax went into effect on January 1, Bloomberg News reported.

Mayor Jim Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s administration predicted that sales would dip in the ďŹ rst year, and then rise again once complacency kicks in.

According to a running tally over at Philly.com, that makes 19 jobs for Nutter, from cushy board positions to a political commentary spot on CNN. The success of Amberellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hearts have not arrived without sacrifice

heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s practicality â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but in its most beautiful form.

Amberella hops out of her latemodel car, bucket and brush already in hand.

In her back seat is a collection of hearts from her new â&#x20AC;&#x153;Power Heartsâ&#x20AC;? collection, all rolled together ready to be plastered to a rightful home of inspiration.

She greets with a hug and a smile, dressed in a workout ensemble, made stylish compliments of a faux fur that hugs her shoulders and runs the length of her slender frame.

She looks like an artist. And on this day, she knew it.

But earlier on the same day, Amberella â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whose real name is Amber Lynn Thompson, professionally known as Amber Lynn, but widely recognized solely as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Amberellaâ&#x20AC;? (like Madonna, she jokes) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; was diagnosed with osteoporosis, another disease she can add to likes of having a rare connective tissue disorder, either of

which forces the 36-year-old West Chester native to medicate or see a specialist for almost daily. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[There was a time] when I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worked for like four years because I was in a hospital,â&#x20AC;? Amberella admits over coffee and conversation with PW. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is back in 2012, when I got really sick and was undergoing blood transfusions. But it was through all that when all the other symptoms manifested and it ended up being a genetic condition.â&#x20AC;?

However, Amberella noted that although doctors claim itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a genetic abnormality, she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know anyone within her immediate or extended family who suffers from the disease. Furthermore, the ask would be hard, as she is estranged from her father, rarely visits her mother and lost her beloved grandmother going on close to three years ago.

On top of health issues, struggles with weight and bad relationships fueled issues with self-esteem. In what seemed a case

in which most people would throw in the towel and accept the shitty hand cosmic fate dealt, Amberella instead decided to use her art as the muse to her soul â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and subsequently the soul of scores of people who can ďŹ nd her hearts all over the city. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It sucks, you know?â&#x20AC;? she says, referring to her condition. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yeah, you could say why me and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not gonna lie to you, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve said why me plenty of times. But you just have to realize itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another one of those things that in life you just deal with.

Everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got shit. But how do you deal with it? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the question and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to you to ďŹ nd an answer before you get too deep and you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get out.â&#x20AC;?

For Amberella, her answer was in the art.

Universal symbols Amberella unravels a heart she has rolled up with a collection of others and begins to spread it across a wall. The

heart, which in her unique font that exclaims â&#x20AC;&#x153;GET IT,â&#x20AC;? is the ďŹ rst she claims from her new Power Hearts rollout. Comfortable with the space between, smooth brush strokes of white glue run over the heart and cascade down her ďŹ ngers.

The installation is quick. Within ďŹ ve minutes, the latest in her collective masterpiece has a new home on current construction along a stretch of Frankford Avenue that is ďŹ ttingly undergoing a renaissance of its own. She takes a step back to get a cautious look at her work and then looks at a passerby smiling and nodding in approval. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mine anymore. This now belongs to everyone,â&#x20AC;? she said, waving her glue-stained brush hand in the air. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This was a feeling Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d had after experiencing a setback and so you know the words GET IT meant a lot to me at the time. It meant donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop, go after it, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take no for an answer, you know? But once I put this up, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up for someone else to interpret, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to inspire someone else. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not mine anymore, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ours.â&#x20AC;?

Empowerment has been the backbone of Amberellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artwork from the earliest sense. However, it was the emergence of Goth Hearts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and a well-timed presidential election â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that has powered much of her latest work. The tape that exposed Donald Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desire to grab women â&#x20AC;&#x153;by the pussyâ&#x20AC;? became the impetus of a gorgeous collection by Amberella called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Magic Pussy Power,â&#x20AC;? which depicted a circular magic 8-ball with a triangle inside delivering messages like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Reply Hazy, try pussy,â&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;You may rely on pussy.â&#x20AC;? She also created a short-lived collection called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Make it Reign,â&#x20AC;? which mimicked dollar bills featuring the likenesses of power women like Frida Kahlo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about empowerment,â&#x20AC;? Amberella said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted my work to really be on display during [Januaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s] Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s March and within a lot of female-run stores. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really important to me that women have a voice and that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not silenced.â&#x20AC;?

Much of this work has gone mainstream for Amberella who signed to have some of her work manufactured and reproduced by a major retail chain, Urban OutďŹ tters. It was a cautious collaboration, as Urban has been sued in the past by other artists who claim the outlet modiďŹ es original work to claim exclusively and sell as its own. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know artists that have been copied

by Urban and it was this huge thing,â&#x20AC;? said Amberella. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So when they approached 3+,//<:((./< &20

They did blog posts about them as artists and bought their designs. So I thought about it because there was also the notion of I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to seem like a sellout, too, so I talked to one of my mentors who said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t selling out, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve created something as an artist that is speaking to all different types of people, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s touching them and for that to be shown on a bigger platform, you have to take this chance.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;?

Taking the chance proved the right one for Amberella, just like it did for her friends. The chain sold much of her artwork and featured her in the blog. It proved lucrative for exposure and, as Amberella afďŹ rmed, remained authentic to her and her brand.

Papering Philadelphia From the iconic to the forgotten, you can ďŹ nd Amberellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signature hearts emblazoned on structures all over Philadelphia. The walls of the Riverwards are clearly her ďŹ rst love, as many of her hearts have found a home within its neighborhoods. From her white-on-black â&#x20AC;&#x153;Goth Heartsâ&#x20AC;? collection â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which arguably put Amberellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artwork on blast â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to her 3+,//<:((./< &20

new â&#x20AC;&#x153;Power Heartsâ&#x20AC;? collection, they offer poignant messages to â&#x20AC;&#x153;power throughâ&#x20AC;? tough times.

However, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not always pulling a Banksy, throwing up hearts on the low all over the city â&#x20AC;&#x201C; though in some cases it is, not that anyone ever really objects.

What Amberella has discovered is that area businesses â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from boutiques to coffee houses to even large retail - are all clamoring for a piece of her heart on their wall.

In some cases, the answer is simple. Like for Jules Tulio, owner of Peroni Management, which owns and operates a number of buildings in Northern Liberties, Fishtown and even into East Kensington. Tulioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s locales host a number of Amberellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hearts. When asked why he readily grants permission, Tulio shrugged and replied: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attractive.â&#x20AC;?

In all, Amberella estimates she has papered the city (either legally or illegally) with well over 300 hearts. Not to mention the number of people who paper their own residences and structures by purchasing and framing her works for as much as $75 for a limited edition print.

he last several weeks have been major for Philadelphia hip hop.

While young microphone controller Symere Woods (better known as Lil Uzi Vert) topped several Billboard charts with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bad and Boujee,â&#x20AC;? his contagious collaboration with Atlantaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Migos, producer Maaly Raw and local singer/MC PnB Rock dropped their debut album, GTTM: Going Thru the Motions.

Recently, the current overlord of Philly rap â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Meek Mill â&#x20AC;&#x201C; held court at Wells Fargo Center with a show of sheer independence (suppose the loss of a high-profile fiancĂŠe like Nicki Minaj does that to a man). Mill led the charge for his Dreamcatchers brand and his hometown with a concert that featured DMX, T.I., Yo Gotti, Guordan, Shy Glizzy, Nipsey Hussle, YG, Jadakiss, PnB Rock, Rick Ross and (on this night a shirtless) Sixers center Joel Embiid.

Oh, and the Roots just announced its bill for the 10th annual Roots Picnic on June 3. The decade-old renowned day of music on the waterfront boasts top-tier talent Pharrell Williams, Solange Knowles and Lil Wayne to name a few.

Phillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rap game? Mad strong.

And some up-and-comers claim itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only getting stronger.

So what is the the state of Philly hip-hop in 2017 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; artistically, socially? Who are the artists and producers that rap peers were curious to hear? We asked a wide variety of Philadelphia based lyricists, MCs that question and checked out their grind to shape the rap platform in 2017.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not so sure what the state of hip hop is, PERIOD, let alone Philadelphia. I do know that in turbulent political times, in times of social conďŹ&#x201A;ict, [thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when] some of the best music is made. [West Philly based rapper] Tone Trump has an album coming out with Cee-Lo Green. Antman Wonder is producing the new album from PRhyme (Royce Da 5â&#x20AC;&#x2122;9â&#x20AC;? & DJ Premier). Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard the new stuff that producer Hank McCoy and Wes Manchild are working on and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impressive. There is also MC/producer B-Roc The Prophecy, whom I believe if given the right attention could be a big name in Philly hip-hop for years to come.

As for me, look man, I plan to lead the way. I made a proclamation that â&#x20AC;&#x153;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gon be a nice yearâ&#x20AC;? and I stand by that. My goal is to bring more light to my city through my brand partnerships, continuing to put out quality music, and doing more things as a local music ambassador for our independent artists.

We need that support among others in Philly since there are rappers and producers here, right at that door.

Look at Core and PNB Rock, both signed and touring internationally. Yazz the Greatest and Bre-Z are on [record label] Empire.

Even I did that reality television thing, Sisterhood of Hip Hop on Oxygen. We have the light. We just have to shine it brighter. My role going forward then is to make it all look and be possible. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hurt to help.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to see more safe and accessible creative spaces for youth that are independently owned and curated by people of color.

I believe one of many reasons you do not see the same level of talent being developed regionally is due to the lack of accessible spaces, independent spaces.

In my youth, we had venues that nurtured a creative community. Places in Center City that was accessible to kids in North Philly and West Philly alike â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and independent, rather than the monopoly of [larger music houses like] AEG or Live Nation.

This sorely needed in Philadelphiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s millennials beyond the world of beer gardens and craft beer and fancy cocktails. My job is to nurture that, ďŹ nd a way for the new entrepreneurs of color to own, market and brand their independent visions, whether as artists or business people. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very emotional about this but we need both sides for this city to ďŹ&#x201A;ourish.

And not just any beer will do.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the landmark sci-ďŹ TV adventure, Star Trek has its own series of brews produced by a small group of fans based in, of all places, Vulcan, Alberta.

In recent months, the group â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which calls itself the Federation of Beer â&#x20AC;&#x201D; has worked with several breweries to produce sudsy tributes to Star Trek characters. Among their portfolio: The Trouble With Tribbles, a blond ale named for one of the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best-remembered episodes; and Red Shirt Ale, brewed in honor of the brave and predictably doomed men and women who donned red uniforms on ill-fated landing expeditions.

The latest is Klingon Imperial Porter, a strong, dark ale made by New Yorkbased Shmaltz Brewing that just arrived in the Philadelphia market.

Licensed brands are nothing new in the beer world. Over the years, beer makers have turned out bottles of J.R.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Private Stock, 4077th M*A*S*H Beer and Three Stooges Curly Light. Mostly, these beers were intended for collectors and eBay re-sellers; the liquid inside was an unremarkable afterthought.

Not any more. Beers made in honor of Game of Thrones, Star Wars and the Hobbit, for example, were all wellreceived by even the most particular palates.

Same goes for Star Trek beers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just like the show itself, creative quality was our ďŹ rst goal,â&#x20AC;? said Vern Raincock, one of the founders of the Federation of Beer.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you look at the big picture, Star Trek has been around for 50 years,â&#x20AC;? he continued. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got some fans who are in the 70s, and others in their 20s who just saw their ďŹ rst Star Trek movie.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a huge audience, with a lot of differences. So it was important to produce a variety of beer styles that broaden your horizon. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no different than some of the concepts that Star Trek touched on.â&#x20AC;?

Though Raincock has a background in beer distribution, he and the other members of the Federation came together primarily as Star Trek enthusiasts. Their ďŹ rst brew was a small batch made for Vul-Con, the annual Star Trek convention held in the small Canadian town of Vulcan.

Over the years, their enterprise grew with formal licensing agreements with CBS-TV, which holds the Star Trek rights, and manufacturing and distribution deals with several breweries. The beers are made in limited batches of 1,000 to 1,500 cases, with two or three new brands hitting the market each year.

Of course, alcohol and Star Trek go together like Capt. Kirk and an alien hottie.

How many times did we see Scotty lay into a bottle of single malt, or Quark, the Ferengi bartender, mix up a Cardassian Sunrise?

As for beer, well, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always Romulan Ale, the highly potent â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and illegal â&#x20AC;&#x201D; blue-colored ale. Raincock said he would love to brew a batch, but so far he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t found a proper blue food coloring that will meet U.S. regs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They did make a Romulan Ale one time in Central America,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By all accounts, it was horrible and in the morning when you peed, your urine was emerald green.â&#x20AC;?

Health Scare Startling world for many area residents if ACA goes away

onsider the following: What would happen if the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) is repealed without a replacement, as Trump and the GOP at-large have indicated?

Remains to be seen, but the consensus is that an estimated 18-25 million Americans would lose much-needed health insurance. Additionally, 52 million Americans with pre-existing conditions would be at risk of having coverage denied in the future. Out-of-pocket costs including copayments are anticipated to rise $4,700 on average per person and the Congressional Budget OfďŹ ce estimated that a repeal of the law would increase federal budget deďŹ cits by $353 billion over the next decade.

Now, I still encourage patients to apply for insurance, but we all know that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no certainty in how long that coverage will last.

A young patient who Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working closely with to ďŹ nd the right combination of medications to manage crippling depression and ďŹ bromyalgia pain said that they are looking for jobs in another country because they would die without the ACA. While I assured them that we would ďŹ nd ways to make sure they continue to have the same access to healthcare, the truth is that yes, the ACA is lifesaving and repealing it is a death sentence for many. In case you missed the family-friendly fun station set off to the side of Thomas Paine Plaza, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s becoming an increasingly familiar sight at Philly-area protests (the left-leaning ones, at least).

Lauren Rowello, progenitor of the corner, is no stranger to the protest scene. But as a mother of two young ones, she knows that some families donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel comfortable to bringing the kids out with the picket signs. So Rowello found a way for them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My kids are 4 and 7, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been marching with me since they popped out,â&#x20AC;? Rowello said, adding that the kids station is way to let others do the same.

At Mondayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s protest, which was part of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not My Presidents Dayâ&#x20AC;? actions across the country, Rowello welcomed protest-going parents and their kids with a small sign that read â&#x20AC;&#x153;Families Against Fascism.â&#x20AC;?

A half dozen kids helped themselves to fruit, cookies, water, and juice. But adults come too, even without their children. Rowello also hopes it can be a space for the disabled, the elderly, and

Snider family close to creation of medical marijuana farm in Parkwood

n the waning days of his life, Flyers founder and chairman Ed Snider sought pain relief from weed.

Nearing the end of his long battle with cancer, Snider wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t getting the relief he needed or deserved from conventional medications, according to his daughter, herself a cancer survivor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was taking enough opioids to kill an elephant,â&#x20AC;? Lindy Snider told about 100 Parkwood residents during a community meeting on Wednesday night. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It made him stop eating. It made him loopy. And it was a terrible way to live out his life.â&#x20AC;?

One day, the family convinced him to try an alternative treatment for his symptoms â&#x20AC;&#x201C; medical marijuana. The drug helped alleviate his pain and gastrointestinal prob-

others whose physical limitations might prevent them from participating in the more demanding parts of a rally.

For activities, there was a sign-making station, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, a DIY station for necklaces and bracelets. This is the regular setup, Rowello says. For LGBT-related events, Rowello usually brings materials to make ďŹ&#x201A;ags as well.

She also has something called a â&#x20AC;&#x153;thinking station,â&#x20AC;? which is a piece of paper that invites people to contribute to an unďŹ nished sentence. On Monday, it was â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need a leader who isâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some people need you to write the word for them,â&#x20AC;? Rowello said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just had a little girl who wanted me to write â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I just want someone whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; So I wrote the word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;niceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for her.â&#x20AC;?

A woman who had been eavesdropping on an interview with PW interrupted to sing Rowelloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s praises. She had seen the station at other protests, too.

Not all of the families are receptive to this idea. Rowello has gotten plenty of criticism over the years from other parents who happen upon her station. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It comes from a place of fear,â&#x20AC;? Rowello says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They think my kids arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to be safe [at the protest], or that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m inďŹ&#x201A;uencing them to strongly.â&#x20AC;?

Hearing that powerful testimonial, members of the Parkwood Civic Association unanimously endorsed a plan by two of Sniderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children and his grandchild to build a 125,000-square-foot medical marijuana growing and processing plant in the Far Northeast.

As ďŹ rst reported by the Northeast Times in advance of the community meeting, the Sniders plan to apply for one of 12 grower-processor or â&#x20AC;&#x153;GPâ&#x20AC;? licenses that may be issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Health under the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Medical Marijuana Act, enacted last year. Two of those licenses may be issued in the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s southeast region.

Lindy Snider and representatives for her company, Snider Health, said they want to build their facility in Philadelphia to extend the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longstanding commitment to the city. They propose to build the plant on a 14-acre, wooded, industrial-zoned parcel at 14515 McNulty Road. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at the end of a cul-de-sac in the Byberry East Industrial Park. The Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development owns the land.

During Wednesdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting, Parkwood residents asked Lindy Snider and representatives for Snider Health about the marijuana businessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; potential impact on the community. City Councilman Brian Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill, whose 10th district includes the proposed site, began the meeting by endorsing the proposal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not low-risk. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no risk at all.

The company would grow and process marijuana on site, extracting its medicinal properties and converting them into pill or liquid form. Under state law, grower-processors cannot sell marijuana in plant form and cannot sell any products directly to consumers. GPs may only market to other GPs or licensed dispensaries.

Lindy Snider said that most of the McNulty Road facility would be set up as a greenhouse, with processing operations also contained there. The facility would operate under state-mandated security, product labeling and delivery guidelines.

entral High School teacher George Bezanis is trying to send a message to Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, the School Reform Commission, and District Superintendent William Hite Jr. A $5,000 message, to be exact.

Over a week ago, Bezanis launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise that much money for a billboard along the I-95 corridor, with the intention of shaming city ofďŹ cials as they head into budget season.

The billboard would spread the message that the city has not reached a contract with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers in nearly four years, and that teachers have gone more than ďŹ ve years without a raise. (The billboard is not endorsed by the teacherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s union; Bezanis is the sole force behind it.) â&#x20AC;&#x153;This job insecurity has also resulted in an unprecedented amount of teachers leaving Philadelphia for other districts or other careers,â&#x20AC;? Bezanis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is the over 100,000 children in the district, however, who suffer the most because of this lack of a stable workforce.â&#x20AC;?

On Saturday, just ďŹ ve days after launching the GoFundMe page, the campaign surpassed its goal by fundraising $5,265.

Bezanis told PW that the billboard is slated to go up on Feb. 27 between Girard and the Center City exit adjacent to the southbound lane.

Since Bezanis launched his campaign, the targeted city agencies have issued statements in response, including Otis Hackney, Kenney's chief education ofďŹ cer, who countered Bezanisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; claim that Kenney was weak on education.

ranklin Okpala always looks to make a difference.

Okpala, a senior at Frankford High School, is a three-sport athlete, where he plays midďŹ eld on the soccer team, kicker on the football team and a combo guard on the basketball team. No matter which sport heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playing, his goal isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t to be the ďŹ&#x201A;ashiest, but to do whatever he can to help the team.

But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his time away from athletics that is truly noteworthy.

The Nigeria native, ranked No. 1 in his class at Frankford, recently did research at the University of Pennsylvania, where he assisted scientists in the ďŹ ght to ďŹ nd a cure for malaria, a disease plaguing his homeland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love science and I wanted to study something where I could help, and this is something I really care about,â&#x20AC;? Okpala said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to see if I could help because if you can ďŹ nd something, it can save a lot of people.â&#x20AC;?

We worked all summer last year to ďŹ gure some things out. We came up with a vaccine. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do anything with it until Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in college.

Despite the fact that Okpala dedicates a lot of time to his studies, he still ďŹ nds time to star on the basketball court. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a young team, but we are doing well,â&#x20AC;? Okpala said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a great coach who really helps us a lot.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to be really good. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re

working hard together and trying to do the best we can.â&#x20AC;?

They deďŹ nitely have a great leader in Okpala.

He is more of a wing player, but when the situation calls for it, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not afraid to do the dirty work. That effort paid off.

The guard helped the Pioneers get to the third round of the Public League playoffs. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the ďŹ rst time this school year that he guided Frankford to postseason success.

In the fall, he helped the Pioneers advance to the Public League Class AAAAA football ďŹ nals before falling to Simon Gratz. Okpala provided Frankford with something it hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had in years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a guy who could convert extra points and ďŹ eld goals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a soccer player, and I was told they needed someone who could kick,â&#x20AC;?

Okpala said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I knew I could do it. I never did it before, but I had fun doing it.â&#x20AC;?

While football was fun, his true passion is basketball.

Okpala played basketball growing up in Nigeria, but the game in the United States is different. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more physical,â&#x20AC;? Okpala said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned a lot by playing here. This year has been very good. I would like to play either basketball or soccer in college.â&#x20AC;?

And while Okpalaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athleticism has opened some doors for him, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his work in the classroom that has really helped him get noticed. He maintains a 4.0 grade point average in the classroom. He is the vice president of the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National Honor Society, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a member of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Scientists, and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been accepted to six colleges, including three Ivy League schools and Duke. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love sports, but academics are always my biggest concern,â&#x20AC;? Okpala said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to be a doctor, so studying is very important.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Malaria is very dangerous in the very young,â&#x20AC;? Okpala said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It would be great if we could develop a vaccine. It has a high fatality rate in children.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what makes it so important that we ďŹ nd a vaccine.â&#x20AC;?
