The number of plaintiffs across three different federal lawsuits filed this week that all allege Philadelphia Police and other city officials used excessive force on them personally while exercising their right to protest. Considering the city is in a $749 million budget shortfall that’s rising by the minute, we think this decision may take a while, but here’s hoping justice gets served one way or another.

Recently, a story came out of Malvern, a seemingly safe Chester County town that apparently is anything but. After news of a sex trafficking ring was discovered, some further digging found out that the three men accused are card-carrying members of the 18th Street Gang, direct rivals of the Los Angeles group, MS-13. The group was discovered only after a girl, just 17 years old, who was being solicited for sex to the highest bidder, called her mom and asked to come home.

Despite being in what’s currently known as the “modified green phase,” as cases continue to rise and there’s still no clear solutions to control the spread or a definitive timeline on a vaccine, city officials decided it’s best to shut shit down. So if you were hoping for Budweiser’s Made in America extravaganza, the Broad Street Run, Thanksgiving Day parade, or the annual shitshow that is the Mummers Parade, as of 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, that bubble was burst.

A passerby could be forgiven for thinking it was a particularly liberated music festival, but the event was one of serious political action.

“My goals are to influence change in policy on every level…. We aim to have legislative policies put into place to protect us (that) these clubs have to follow,” says BammRose, who says she’s been a political activist since high school, leading protests and even serving as president of the History and Political Science Club in college. She says that with this action, she wants to bring awareness to the racism and colorism in gentlemen’s clubs: the hiring, marketing and employment practices that she says most adversely affect Black women.

According to a Stilettos’ press release, “Black and Afrocentric women are often not

hired in non-urban establishments regardless of talent. When they are hired, they are held to a different standard than that of white dancers. They often face racism from staff and customers. Darker skinned and Afrocentric women are not promoted on club social media and websites.”

Stilettos is hoping that increasing media attention to racial inequalities in America will help foment support for Black sex workers as well.

“When you say, ‘black lives matter,’ you don’t get to decide which ones matter,” she says, adding, “Dancing is legal, we deserve safety regulation and equal employment opportunity.”

Stilettos is an organization led entirely

by Black and brown women and non-binary dancers and sex workers. Many of their demands are inspired by their own experiences as club employees. BammRose says that her

jobs in the clubs “often have ended badly.”

“Generally speaking, there is a pimp/hoe dynamic in which clubs feel like they own you, when in fact they don’t, and it causes them to treat your life with no value,” she says, adding that dancers experience not only racism and colorism, but also body shaming, sexual harassment and assault. Of club owners, BammRose says, “To them, you are an expendable, replaceable human. They couldn’t care less about you personally or professionally. Many times in these establishments, when you report being wronged by a customer or staff, you lose.

“I’ve worked in nine clubs, and they are all different. I enjoy dancing and entertaining,” says Mxstress Lilith, a stripper, dominatrix and Stilettos board member. “However, I did not enjoy being sexually harassed and assaulted regularly while on the job, dealing with stigma outside of work, seeing the colorism, experiencing racism, and having my basic rights regularly stripped from me.”

In addition to urging clubs to address issues of race and sex, Stilettos is also pushing for safer working conditions.

According to their press release, clubs need to ensure that “pole apparatuses and emergency medical equipment are properly maintained, and facilities kept clean.

Dancers are required to work in heels that are 6+ inches. If they are injured due to establishment error, they are not compensated and are left out of work.”

Philly Weekly has previously covered similar concerns, including: the exploitation of dancers’ status as independent contractors, club managers demanding illegal fees, and failure to properly address dancers’ safety concerns when raised. The number of lawsuits initiated by dancers against former employers has dramatically increased in recent years, including suits against several Philly clubs.

Strippers are classified as independent contractors, in theory. This is the rationale for why dancers are required to Image | Redlite Photos pay for their stage time: that they are entrepreneurs using the club space. Despite that, club management often maintains tight control over schedules and pricing, and even elements of hair, makeup, heel height, and whether phones are allowed on the club floor. Yet this control does not accompany the benefits of being classified as an employee, like taxes and health benefits.

“Every club I have worked at [has failed to] honor the way that independent contractors’ contracts should work,” says Mxstress Lilith.

They said that they have been punished for

demanding more equitable treatment. “I have lost jobs over speaking out, but I will continue to. I have met the strongest, most amazing people through it.

“The Philly Stripper Strike was about making ourselves as an organization known, or goals and our mission. Ending racism and colorism in the clubs, demanding safe and just working conditions, and addressing sexual assault in the workplace,” they added.

While they are a new organization, Stilettos appears to have community support, social media traction and some financing. In addition to funds raised at the Stripper Strike, Stilettos has managed to raise a few thousand dollars via GoFundMe. The organizers are also offering fitness and pole dancing classes and producing adult variety shows to support the cause.

“When we are successful in this, clubs will be safer, cleaner, and friendlier environments for the women that work there,” says BammRose, who adds that this is only the beginning for Stilettos. “We also aim to continue educating dancers on their rights as independent contractors and employees working in and outside of clubs.

We aim to build a network, a sisterhood of women and resources, so these women don’t have to feel alone or subjected to patriarchal abuse.”

A surprising and ongoing obstacle to revolution in the industry has been convincing dancers to organize and demand change.

“This event was about creating community and education,” says BammRose, “We wanted to wake people up and show them that they deserve more.” Many dancers are convinced they need clubs to make money, she says, enduring substandard conditions and mistreatment out of belief that it is a financial necessity.

“We’re here to show them otherwise, we’re here to teach them true independence,” she says, “We, the dancers, have the power. It’s not a strip club without strippers.”

Abolitionist Harper the perfect pick to replace Rizzo statue Philadelphia’s monument to the Black abolitionist and civil rights activist, Octavius V. Catto, has been the site of several recent protests condemning police violence and demanding systemic reforms. Philly also needs monuments to Black women who have played pivotal roles in our history. Just as the #SayHerName movement demonstrates the significance of honoring Black women’s experiences of police violence, so too the monuments of our city need to recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of Black women.

One excellent candidate to stand in the place of the recently removed Frank Rizzo statue is Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911), an educated free Black woman who grew up in the slave state of Maryland, but who became a prominent abolitionist and women’s rights activist in Philadelphia. A February 2020 event at the National Constitution Center celebrated Harper as an abolitionist, suffragist and civil rights activist, while also honoring her literary career as a poet, short story writer and novelist. She is featured in a sculpture currently designated for the Pennsylvania capital and should also take center stage here in her chosen hometown, where Harper lived for a total of 40 years.

Frances Watkins moved north at age 25 to teach in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1853, she found she could never return to Maryland, for the state had passed a law forbidding free Blacks from entering its borders; those who did were threatened with enslavement. Outraged, Watkins decided to devote herself to antislavery activism.

In 1854, Watkins moved to Philadelphia, where she lived with the family of the chair of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee, abolitionist William Still, whose house on Ronaldson Street (now 625 S. Delhi Street) was a station on the Underground Railroad. Believing in direct action and personal sacrifice to end slavery, Watkins declared to Still: “This is a common cause; and if there is any burden to be borne in the Anti-Slavery cause – anything to be done to weaken our hateful chains or assert our manhood and womanhood, I have a right to do my share of the work.”

Watkins met and aided fugitive slaves, giving liberally of the money she earned as a lecturer and writer in order to feed and shelter

freedom seekers on their journey north on the Underground Railroad. Joining the American Anti-Slavery Society, Harper gave public lectures in the northern states and Canada alongside abolitionists Frederick Douglass, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, and William Lloyd Garrison.

In 1860, on the eve of the outbreak of the Civil War, Frances Ellen Watkins married the widower Fenton Harper in Cincinnati, Ohio.

When her husband died unexpectedly, she returned to Philadelphia with her young daughter Mary. Again living with the Stills, Harper lectured in favor of woman suffrage, prohibition of alcohol, federal funding for education, and civil rights.

Speaking at a National Woman’s Rights convention in New York City in 1866, Harper challenged the assembled white women to take responsibility for their racism and lack of solidarity with Black women: “Have [white] women nothing to do with this?

Not long since, a colored woman took her seat in an Eleventh Street car in Philadelphia, and the conductor stopped the car, and told the rest of the passengers to get out, and [they] left the car with her in it alone....Are there not wrongs to be righted?” Embracing the passage of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution, which granted Blacks citizenship and men the right to vote, Harper also argued in favor of extending the vote to all women.

In 1870, Harper purchased a rowhouse in the Bella Vista neighborhood of South Philadelphia at 1006 Bainbridge Street, a National Historic Monument, where she lived until her death in 1911. Harper’s alliance-building with white women began in earnest in Philadelphia in the 1870s.

Committed to prohibition and women’s voting rights, she worked as assistant superintendent of the YMCA and as state superintendent of “work among colored people” (from 18831891) for the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), the largest women’s organization of the nineteenth century.

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper continued her activism and her successful literary career until her death in 1911. Let’s do the right thing by honoring her life with a public monument.

Who really runs the public library?

Enough subsidies for electric vehicles

In a 2019 Philadelphia Tribune article on the inherent racist and white supremacist practices of the Free Library of Philadelphia towards Black employees and Black patrons, a key factor was missing.

Who truly runs the library?

Is it the Board of Trustees, which appears to be a quasi public and secretive organization which does not list its bylaws, meeting schedule and only have one meeting minutes available online?

The Board of Trustees meeting of June 19, 2019, was held at eight o’clock in the morning while the library was closed to the public. Or, the Board of Directors of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation? The Foundation, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts “The Library in the City,” is a “separate nonprofit organization.” Which is a code phrase for private or shadow organization.

The Foundation, just like the Board of Trustees, does not list its bylaws, meeting schedule nor meeting minutes.

“The foundation, which exists solely to raise money for the library, is a nonprofit with its own board and staff.”

(The Library in the City) But at the same time, many of the members of the Board of Directors are also members of the Board of Trustees, which is completely a direct conflict of interest. Intermingling a so-called public

Americans are naturally wary of electric vehicles. Salespeople may pitch battery-powered cars as the future, but most drivers see them as an expensive, chancy alternative to petroleum-fueled automobiles. This has been true for more than a century.

Electric cars once stood on their own. “In the late 1890s, at the dawn of the automobile era, steam, gasoline, and electric cars all competed to become the dominant automotive technology,” wrote David Kirsch in The Electric Vehicle and the Burden of History.

“By the early 1900s, the battle was over, and internal combustion was poised to become the prime mover of the twentieth century.”

In 1896, in fact, when a young Henry Ford asked Thomas Edison about electricity for his horseless carriage, Edison banged the table with a “no,” citing reduced driving range from a heavy battery and inconvenient recharging.

Today, government policies have put EVs back into the market – for the elite. There are federal write-offs of $7,500 per vehicle and 30 percent for EV refueling stations. Car dealers use EV credits to average down regular SUVs to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards too.

Still, range is poor and recharging time-consuming for EVs, not to mention searching for scarce refueling stations. And far from emission-free, EVs are “elsewhere emission” vehicles since nearly two-thirds of U.S. electricity is generated from natural gas and coal.

Throwing good money after bad, states are handing out subsidies to EV buyers. New Jersey recently instituted rebates of up to $5,000 per car. California offers up to $7,000 in electric vehicle rebates, while Oregon provides $2,500.

Will this change true ways of driving? New Jersey officials believe their plan will increase

city agency with a private corporation. And, according to “The Library in the City,” the Foundation board must include eight Board of Trustees members. The Foundation and the Board of Trustees collectively as two supposedly distinct and separate boards appoints the library director, “who is accountable to both groups and also must operate in the city’s chain of command.”

The current director of the library is a white female named Siobhan Reardon.

Reardon also simultaneously served as president of the privatized Foundation.

Reardon has served as president and director of the library and Foundation since 2008.

Most of the librarians just like Reardon are white females even though a significant portion of the patrons of the library and residents of Philadelphia are Black.

Under Reardon leadership, only 25 percent of her leadership team is socalled “people of color” and the library still has refused to hire a full time diversity and inclusive officer with pressure from city council.

Now, who is truly responsible for the racist and white supremacist practices of the Free Library of Philadelphia? Is it Reardon, the quasi Board of Trustees or the shadow Foundation, with its prominent oligarchy and philanthropist members?

By 2040, lawmakers hope that electric motors will power 85 percent of light vehicles sold or leased in the Garden State.

That’s fantasy. Electric vehicles only accounted for 2 percent of new vehicle sales nationwide in 2019 even with a host of tax bribes.

In fact, EV sales have stagnated; California, which provides the strongest incentives for purchasing electric vehicles, saw sales decline in 2019.

It should be no mystery. While gas-powered cars can travel up to 500 miles on a single tank, electric vehicles get a mere 100 to 300 miles per battery charge. Inexpensive gasoline and diesel have made traditional cars even more desirable. Advances in drilling and other technologies were behind gasoline’s drop to below $3 a gallon. Today, regular unleaded averages below $2 per gallon nationally.

Post-pandemic, when oil demand returns to normal levels, gasoline will remain far below $4 a gallon price in the summer of 2008, thanks to the shale-oil revolution. Car emissions, too, have significantly declined since the 1970s.

Environmentally conscious regulators and prudent lawmakers can let Americans buy regular cars. Taxpayers will be thankful too.

New Goulding album Platinum-plated British vocalist and songwriter Ellie Goulding’s new album “Brightest Blue” – a double one at that, to be released July 17 – comes complete with odd lot producers and weird collaborators with deep Philly roots, such as avant-garde R&B master serpentwithfeet and sampladelic mix-mastering whiz Diplo. Why weird? Considering Goulding’s usual smooth operator status, this album sounds as if it is exploding her image and sound with something rougher and stranger.

Whole Foods buffets This might seem like a minor culinary thing when it comes to the wealth and breadth of Philly’s well-heeled dining establishments.

But anyone who is a fan of Whole Foods (not the goony millennial and crust punk customers, UGH, but rather the selection) knows well the multi-tray set up of hot and cold buffet tables, be it morning breakfasts, lunches and dinner entrees. Well, ever since C-19, the buffets have been closed, with flower arrangements in their place.

This week, however, I heard a rumor that Whole Foods will soft open the buffet section in a limited fashion, with many safety precautions beyond sneeze guards, and with way limited access – more than likely more cafeteria-style serving than the usual help yourself.

It ain’t white linen, but it is something yummy of note, and, if you want something to nosh in a hurry.

New ‘Wonder Years’ Last week, I mentioned Southwest Philly native Lee Daniels producing and directing his first film in 10 years – that Billie Holiday joint – and selling it for big bucks at the Venice virtual film market. More money, more money, more money, this week, Daniels has announced that he will soon produce a reboot of “The Wonder Years” for the ABC Network, but with a Black household instead of Fred Savage en famille. Masked Philly In the continuing Icepack weekly saga of celebrated Philadelphians having to wear masks during this, the time of coronavirus, and making the most of it is Chef Miguel Angel Hernandez Mota. This native of Veracruz, Mexico, has been working for restaurateur and daylight/nightlife entrepreneur Avram Hornik’s Four Corners for a minute, especially when it came to opening and creating mod Mex menus for Rosy’s (the old Roosevelt’s) right off Rittenhouse Square. Last week, Mota opened Juno with Hornik on Spring Garden across the street from Union Transfer.

When it came to what Mota did during C-19’s initial phases of slowdown, the chef didn’t – slow down that is – as he spent most of his time working. “I didn’t have anyone at risk at home, so I was able to work and have co-workers stay home, those who had families and those at risk. I love what I do, so, I was happy to be able to help my team at Rosy’s Taco Bar.” Mota doesn’t really mind the masks, as he

goes through so many. “This mask is a covering that we have from our friends at Tito’s” (the locally-based vodka distiller). “They need to be able to stay up when we’re moving around, so a bandana works well too since I can make it tight. The good thing about the mask is that it keeps me from eating too many tortas during work.”

The one thing the chef truly misses, and the first thing that Mota will do when masks come off, is sing in his church.

“I miss that so much,” Mota exclaimed.

“Church is such a big part of my life. I sing and pray at home, but there is something special about the community that churches make you feel. I miss that community and raising my voice up. Until then, I am excited to be behind the stove at Juno on Spring Garden. I’ve trained under some great chefs and have been preparing for this day for many years. I’m excited to take my skills and get the chance to add my personal touches. Mexican cuisine is what I grew up with. This is a great opportunity to show my talents and introduce new audiences to my cooking.”

Holly. As a kid, those guys were legends to me.

Couple that with being taken to the drive-in to see films like ‘American Hot Wax,’ ‘American Graffiti’ and ‘Grease’ – that beat was in my ears from a very early age. It’s in my blood.

I’ve always loved it.

“Our goal is to play original rock-n-roll, in the style of the pioneers, but update it lyrically and sonically,” Castro added. “What if Buddy Holly had access to a stack of effects pedals and some Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds records?”

PW recently caught up to Castro to talk about the new LP and music.

Talk a little about the new LP, “Come On Angels.” How did it come together and is it everything you hoped it would be? What will be the best way for people to get the album?

The album is better than I’d hoped it would be. I was confident with the songs – most had been a part of our live set and tested in front of an audience. But with the recording process, I really think we captured something magical. I’ve worked on roughly two dozen records, both as a musician and a producer, and these were by far the most effortless recording sessions I’ve ever been involved in. And I credit that to Brian McTear and Matt Poirer at Miner St. Brian kept us from getting in our own way. Everything was recorded live to tape – except vocals – with minimal overdubs or editing. No click track – just a live band in a room. Personality over perfection. Strip it down and be confident in what you are and let that shine through. And Matt added so much atmosphere to the songs – his obsession with analog reverbs and quirky tape delays was a blessing that brought so much color to the

sound. The whole process was just fun. Focused and creative, but not stressful.

I’m really proud of it and I think it’s the best record I’ve ever been a part of.

The best way to hear it is on vinyl – preferably in a dark, candle-lit room laying on the floor with headphones on. Proper old school style. And you can purchase that vinyl directly from us on our website (thegravamen. com) but the album will also be available on all streaming platforms – Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, etc – so pick your poison. We even have CDs for those who want to keep it mid-90s. No cassettes though – sorry, I lived through that era so I’m not jumping on that bandwagon.

You held your first practice together in January 2018. Did you know right away this was going to be a great lineup or did it take awhile for everything to fall into place?

I drove home from that first practice with a huge grin on my face. Previously, I’d had a few false starts where something always felt off.

And I’ve been in enough bands to know that you can’t force chemistry. It’s either working or it’s not. But once we started playing together, everything fell instantly into place. “Lightning in a bottle,” as H00V3R, our bass player, always says.

As players, those guys are all really talented, but more importantly, they’re great listeners, which is a rarity. They play off each other rather than talk over one another.

There’s no ego here – we all serve the song.

Dal and H00V3R spent years playing together in Thorazine, so as a rhythm section, they’re machine tight. And Mike is an incredibly gifted guitar player. I can’t wait for people to hear

what he plays on this record.

Your music blends the style of the pioneers of rock and roll with more modern effects. How did you come up with this recipe for success? Is it a sound that’s unique to Mighty Joe Castro & The Gravamen?

I don’t think anyone else sounds like us. It’s about much more than just adding modern guitar effects to an early rock-n-roll template.

We’re trying to avoid as many of that genre’s cliches as we can. We don’t play 12 bar blues.

We don’t write songs about sock-hops and hotrods.

But what if Buddy Holly or Ritchie Valens had access to a bunch of guitar effects and a stack of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds records?

Or The Jesus and Mary Chain? That’s the idea – go back to the root. Take what we’ve learned, everything great that’s come after and go apply it to that original sound. We don’t follow any rules. We just try to keep it honest.

Are you familiar with Neil Young’s LincVOLTcar? He took a 1959 Lincoln Continental – a giant beast of a vehicle – and stripped the engine down and converted it into a hybrid electric car with air conditioning and a modern hi-fi sound system. That’s basically what we’re trying to do. Keep the aesthetic beauty and style of the original, but update the guts so it’s relevant to modern life. Because as an art form, rock-n-roll is timeless. Everyone can relate to that beat. It just needs to be taken out of the museum and have some new life breathed into it.

It looks like things are starting to open up again following the pandemic – at least a little. What are your plans for the rest of the year and moving forward? Concert performances, new music?

No firm plans at the moment. With the pandemic, everything is still up in the air and I don’t know if we’ll play a show again until 2021. Obviously, we don’t want to create a situation where we put us or our audience at risk.

And on the flip side of that, we don’t want to play a show where the vibe is going to be lackluster.

If the venue has to be kept at 50 percent capacity and everyone has to stay six feet apart, the energy is just not going to be there. A live show should be a communal experience – everyone together, celebrating being alive in that moment and getting lost in the music. And in modern life, where everyone’s face is planted firmly into their phones 90 percent of their waking day, that escape is more important now than ever. So that’s what we want and, to settle for less, is difficult. I don’t want our personal impatience to lead us toward accepting an inferior experience.

So we’re gonna wait and see. Fingers crossed for the vaccine and moving things back to normal.

In the meantime, we’re going to keep making videos and doing whatever we can to promote the new record. And I’ll probably start writing songs for the next one. Onward and upward always.

Another role/project that I am incredibly proud of was playing Rosella in “Sinatra Club,” a film that I was one of the producers on, as well. It was based on a true story about the night John Gotti became John Gotti and the story of Sal “Ubatz” Polisi. Rosella is a comedic mobster gumada, and it was just an incredible experience with the most amazing actors I could have dreamed of working opposite, including Danny Nucci, Jason Gedrick, Michael Nouri, and fellow Philadelphia native Joey Lawrence.

Talk a little about your role as a film producer. You started Philly Chick Pictures to develop independent short and feature films. How has that project developed over the years?

I have always been a leader of sorts, and have had a keen sense of creating opportunities, managing personalities, and thinking outside the box. After making a living acting in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City right out of college, I did not even realize I had, in some ways, been producing when I would be brought onto a project as an actress.

Although I love acting more than anything, I had been inspired to produce when I moved to Hollywood from New York City and created my production company, Philly Chick Pictures, to create more roles for myself as an actress. I was not born into the entertainment industry in Hollywood, and there was no nepotism in my world, so I felt compelled to create/build something for myself to help move my acting career forward in La La Land.

I took producing courses and workshops, then dove in and began partnering with other production companies, as it takes an army to produce a project!

In addition to acting and producing, you’re a certified life coach and dating expert. Any advice – as either a life coach or dating expert – for people during this pandemic?

This challenging pandemic and isolation period has forced each of us to slow down, get back to basics and look within. As a life coach, I, too, have had to dig deep inside to find the strength to forge ahead in the face of adversity. I understand the fear many are facing now, as we do not have the answers or absolutes we seek to know when this world will heal.

I tell people to allow yourself to feel whatever it is you are authentically feeling. Cry, scream or journal it out… then, dig deep inside, find your inner Vamp, and Vamp It Out! You do not have to be a teenage girl to do this!

Find the courage inside to forge ahead, however you can, and keep moving forward!

Let’s trust that, in time, the pandemic will heal, we will get back to socialization and financial stability, and this painful experience will make us stronger for it. In the meantime, always know that you are never alone and there is support out there for you!

You also are known for your philanthropic efforts, especially in terms of ad-

vancing breast cancer awareness. Why is giving back and helping others important to you?

It is important to me to give back in whatever way I can… whether little or large. I am grateful to have whatever little “celebrity” status, recognition, or fame I have that can help make a difference. I feel blessed, and I feel responsible to bring positivity to the world. I am a believer in being a philanthropist and I typically work with numerous charities at a time.

I am a celebrity ambassador for the Breaking the Chains Foundation that cultivates healing through art for those who have experienced eating disorders, self-esteem issues, and body image issues. I am active in charity work with the Los Angeles Mission on Skid Row and helping to feed the homeless. I have been active in several breast cancer charities and events, as I have lost people whom I loved to breast cancer over the years. I have also been active in quite a few charities and philanthropies to support AIDS research.

What’s ahead for you? Are you working on any projects now, or do you have something planned for after the pandemic passes?

I am so grateful to have acted in, and produced, a few projects that wrapped prior to COVID-19. My “Psycho Therapy” film director, Staci Layne Wilson, wrote a film with Darren Gordon Smith (“Repo! TheGenetic Opera”). Those two are so talented and I do not want to give any spoilers, but it is “The Second Age of Aquarius.” I play Tawny Stevens, a young mom, stuck in the ‘80s, as a New Jersey, rocker mom. Wait until you see my hair, my make-up, and my leopard pants. I did the Jersey accent.

We also wrapped a TV pilot “Stripped.” It is a comedy/drama that was written and directed by Marc Clebanoff, who also directed the film “The Mourning,” which stars Michael Walton, Louis Mandylor, Dominique Swain and Larry Hankin.

Lastly, at the start of COVID-19, my creative instinct kicked in and I knew I had to create to stay somewhat “sane,” so I spent most of the quarantine producing and filming a virtual streaming series.

“Red Rooms” was conceived and completed out of “isolation inspiration!” Joshua Butler and I had been in development on a project and had been reminiscing about our favorite industry days of yesteryear when we met on the horror film circuit. We are currently working on post-production and cannot wait to see where we end up!

How we’re attending XPNFest Weekend...

WXPN is not letting the cancellation of its 2020 XPoNential Music Festival stop it from bringing music lovers an exciting, three-day music festival filled with dozens of hours of live music performances, from Friday night July 24 through Sunday, July 26. XPNFest Weekend will feature archived full-length sets and two-song sets presented online from some of XPoNential Music Festival’s most memorable past performers. Head over to xpn.org for lineups and details, but here are some of the highlights.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

We love all things Will Ferrell, so we definitely have this epic on our list to see. However, the reviews we saw – and a couple of Ferrell interviews we caught on various talk shows while working from home – indicate this is actually a really touching movie. And it has great music, we hear. And if this isn’t what you are looking for from Ferrell right now, Elf is also available.

Between this pandemic thing and super-high temperatures outside, it’s a good time to stay home and watch Netflix. Here are some of our favorite offerings.

Inside Man

A Spike Lee Joint, Denzel Washington turns in a riveting performance as an NYPD hostage negotiator. Clive Owen and Jodie Foster also are awesome in this crime thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Stay with it until the end because there’s a twist you won’t see coming – and we won’t spoil it here.

Sleepless in Seattle

A true blast from the past (1993 to be specific), if you like rom-coms, you have to check out this classic. It has it all: An all-star cast that includes Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan and more. A timeless tale of romance as widower Sam meets Annie after some help from his son on Christmas Eve of all things. Don’t miss it.

Baby Mama

Upper Darby’s Tina Fey stars alongside Amy Poehler in this 2008 comedy. Fey’s character wants to have a baby, but can’t, so she hires Poehler’s character, a South Philly woman, to be the surrogate mother. Let the hilarity begin.

The Social Network

This 2010 film is fairly timely these days, as you might have heard Facebook is in the news for all the wrong reasons. The movie, though, is outstanding, as it’s three Academy Awards can attest. As you can guess, it covers the founding of the social media network, but it’s way better than that description implies.

One of our all-time favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger flicks, it was made in 1990, but takes place well into the future when people can get fake memories implanted in them. To summarize, Arnold’s character wants to go to Mars, but can’t (kind of like we can’t go places now due to the pandemic) so he gets memories of Mars implante in his head. And then chaos ensues as Arnold does Arnold stuff.

NFL

We’ll call this a wait-and-see situation since the season is still at least a couple of months away. The remote draft went pretty well, and the league has established plans for training camps. The NFL has already canceled two preseason games but the players are pushing for no preseason games. New things you might see on the field: face shields for the players and no jersey swaps after games.

By now, we already should be complaining about the Phillies’ pitching. But we’re not. Pro sports have been shut down by the virus, pretty much like everything else.

However, there are plans to start again, with one, MLS, already underway. Here’s where the various leagues are at in the process – at least as of early this week.

How we’re getting ready to watch sports...

NBA

By now you’ve heard about the “bubble” at Disney World in Florida that will, with any luck, provide a way to finally end the regular season and crown a champion. OK, not the greatest locale given Florida’s recent COVID spike, but, nevertheless, the teams are there and strict protocols have been put in place.

Already several players have decided to stay home due to health concerns. New things you might see if games resume as scheduled shortly: Players arrive at the arena already in uniform, so no pre-game fashion statements. Also, players can replace their names on the backs of their jerseys with social justice messages.

NHL

Like the NBA, the NHL had to stop its season due to the virus. It hopes to face-off again next month in a 24-team tournament-like format to see which team can hoist the Stanley Cup – basically just skipping the rest of the season and going straight to the playoffs.

Training camps were set to open this week. There’s no bubble and no home-ice advantage as Toronto and Edmonton are the “hub cities” for the tournament.

MLB

The season finally is scheduled to start in the next week or so. Teams have been training. The usual protocols are in place as are plans for a 60-game season after the commissioner pretty much just mandated it after the league and players union couldn’t come to terms. And, like with the NBA, already a few players have opted out. New things you might see once the ump yells “play ball”: No spitting. No high fives. Players seated in the stands since dugouts don’t allow for much social distancing. The National League will be allowed to use a designated hitter.

MLS

The MLS has its own Disney bubble, but that bubble already has shown signs of bursting. Serving as basically the canary in the coal mine, the league recently started play, but already two teams, the Nashville and Dallas squads, have had to withdraw from the tournament due to COVID concerns. The DC United and Toronto FC match was postponed 20 minutes before it was set to start. We shall see how the Union’s season plays out, but the early returns are not promising.
