Nick Olerenshaw Review Magazines Editor

DIRECTIONS You will also need 8 wooden ice-lolly sticks, a thermometer and a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

STEP 1. Put the apples in a large bowl, pour over boiling water to

cover and then quickly pour it off. This will remove any wax coating from the apples and will help the toffee to stick. Polish dry.

STEP 2. Push the sticks halfway into the core of the apples at the stalk end.

STEP 3. Next, combine the Tate & Lyle® Golden Caster Sugar

and water in a large heavy-based pan and stir constantly over a low heat with a wooden spoon for about 5 minutes until the sugar has dissolved.

STEP 4. Add the Lyle’s Golden Syrup® and butter and stir until melted and combined.

STEP 5. Bring to the boil without stirring, otherwise the sugar

may crystallise, until the mixture reaches 149°-154°C (300°-310°F) or the hard-crack stage for about 15-18 minutes. If you don't have a thermometer you can check that the toffee is ready by dropping a teaspoon of the mixture into a bowl of cold water. It should harden instantly and, when removed, be brittle and easy to break. If you can still squash the toffee, continue to boil it.

STEP 6. Remove the pan from the heat, let the bubbles subside

a little, then tilt the pan, and quickly and carefully dip the apples one at a time in the toffee, twirling them as you do, to completely cover. Let any excess drip away before placing on a baking tray to harden. If you find the toffee becomes too thick because the temperature has dropped, just heat it up again.

STEP 7. Once set, store the toffee apples in an airtight container

in a dry place, not the fridge, and eat within 24 hours or the toffee will soften and start to liquefy. RM 3

SIMPLE GROOMING TIPS FOR WOMEN & MEN OVER 50! For Women •Dress Your Best!

Many women feel embarrassed by their bodies. Senior women in particular are prone to hiding the extra pounds that they may have put on. Unfortunately, baggy outfits often make such women appear years older than they actually are. Contrary to what you might think, tighterfitting clothing will make you look thinner and more fit, regardless of your body shape. You don't need to jump into a skin-tight leotard, however! Instead, choose clothing that fits you well and accentuates your best physical features. Consider adding a waisthigh belt to your outfits to accentuate your waist, and opt for button-down sweaters instead of loose-hanging cardigans. By dressing to your figure, you are guaranteed to look better than you would in bulky attire.

•Use Retinol On Your Skin

Retinol-based skin care products are arguably the best anti-aging remedies available today. Retinol, known more commonly as Vitamin A, is a powerful antioxidant. When used in skin care products, retinol protects the skin from free radical damage, reducing wrinkles and boosting collagen production. Retinolcontaining skin care products have also been proven to reduce skin discolourations, eczema, and clogged pores. Through the daily application of retinol cream, you can dramatically reduce many of the visible signs of aging.

•Add Some Colour To Your Hair!

Whether you love your natural hair colour or dread the thought of graying roots, you could probably benefit by changing up your hair colouring routine! Many women over 50 either dye their hair a single colour or simply embrace their natural grays.

Regardless of your current hair colour, consider adding a second or third accent colour to your hair. Women with naturally gray hair may benefit from honey-coloured highlights or tinted lowlights. Women who choose to dye their hair often benefit from adding highlights and lowlights as well. By adding an extra shade of colour, your hair will appear more vibrant and textured. This simple styling change is practically guaranteed to make you look younger and more fresh-faced.

For Men •Stay Clean-Shaven!

If you're looking to shave a few years off of your age, consider eliminating your facial hair! Though you might love your beard, this facial hair may secretly be aging you! Studies have found that moustaches and beards make men appear up to eight years older than they actually are! Frequent shaving leads to cleaner, healthier, and younger-looking skin. Shaving has been proven to remove dead skin cells and increase collagen production in the skin. This boost in collagen will lead to suppler, more youthful-looking skin.

•Invest In A Good Moisturiser

Taking care of your skin isn't just a "chick thing!" With each passing year, men are spending more and more on skin care and anti-aging products. With the proper skin care products, you can ensure that your face is properly hydrated and moisturized. Most mainstream skin care brands now offer moisturizers and skin serums for men. Search for products with ingredients like Vitamin C, retinol, and taurine for extra effectiveness. Simply apply some facial cream once or twice a day for optimal results. Taking care of your skin doesn't make you

any less of a man! By using a simple daily moisturizer, you can keep your skin looking youthful and healthy for years to come.

•Take Care Of Your Hair

Recent studies show that women are openminded about hair styles on men over the age of 50. Somewhat surprisingly, many women responded that they like seeing older men with clean-shaven heads.Though most women approved of senior men dyeing their hair or opting for hair replacements, the majority of women surveyed said that they loved the "silver fox" look as well. As one might expect, women have a diverse array of opinions on men's hairstyles. Everyone agrees, however, that men should take good care of their hair. Choose a style that you're comfortable with. Clean your hair often, and be sure to have your hair trimmed or shaven regularly. When in doubt, opt for a classic, clean-cut hairstyle. By keeping your hair clean and well-maintained, your appearance will be naturally enhanced. Staying stylish while aging gracefully doesn't have to be a challenge! Continue taking care of yourself and your looks; by doing so, you can remain looking your best!

GARDENING GENERAL TASKS & GARDEN MAINTENANCE November can be a surprisingly busy time in the garden, with the last of the bulb planting, clearing and tidying up before the ground really hardens and the winter sets in.

• LAST CHANCE TO PLANT BULBS

Before the ground sets like iron and the frosts appear, early November is your last chance to plant spring bulbs like narcissus and daffodil. You can also plant tulip bulbs to reduce the risk of Tulip Fire infection.

• PLANTS

Bare root roses can be planted anytime between now and March. Prune roses now to avoid wind rock. If you have any really tender plants, like banana or tree ferns then they’ll need wrapping and/or removing to the greenhouse for winter protection from storms and low temperatures. Keep lifting dahlia tubers, and also begonia

and gladioli corms and store somewhere cool, dry and frost free over winter. Plant out winter bedding. Cut back foliage from perennials that are flopping, or where leaves are yellowing and dying back. You can also dig up perennials and divide them to increase and re-position your plants for next year.

• TIDYING UP

Clean out the greenhouse thoroughly, washing the glass and floor to discourage pests and infections over the winter. Gather up leaves from the base of rose plants, especially those with black spot to reduce infection next year. Clear falling leaves throughout the garden for compost, and lift pots onto ‘feet’ to stop waterlogging.

• VEGETABLES AND FRUITS

Lift parsnips after the first frost to improve flavour.

You can also prepare beds for Autumn garlic. Spread rotted manure on your cleared veg beds so it has the winter to break down into the soil, ready for next year’s planting. Plant raspberry canes and currant bushes while they are dormant. Prune pear and apple trees from now until February, but don’t prune plums, as this will encourage silverleaf infection.

• HELPING WILDLIFE THROUGH WINTER

By putting out additional food, gardeners can make a significant contribution to supporting wildlife over winter. It is also a great way to watch wildlife even in the smallest of gardens or balconies, often at very close quarters. Help birds in winter by placing fat blocks in wire cages. Balls in plastic nets are not recommended as birds such as woodpeckers can get their tongues caught.

BIRTH OF THE INTERNET A FUNNY STORY OF HOW THE INTERNET BEGAN AMUSING BIRTH OF COMPUTERS In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" And Abraham did look at her - as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load - but simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. The drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent.To prevent neighbouring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was called Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures: Hebrew To The People (HTTP). But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secrete himself inside Abraham's

drum and began to siphon off some of Abraham's business. But he was soon discovered, arrested and prosecuted for insider trading. And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And he did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drum heads and drumsticks. Lo, Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others!" And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known, he said, "We need a name that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE)... ...AND THAT

beer! 2. Distilled spirits such as brandy, gin, rum, tequila, contain no carbohydrates, no fats and no cholesterol of any kind. 3. The word 'toast,' which means wishing good health originated in ancient Rome where a piece of toasted bread was literally dropped into wine. 4. Most people think that drinking alcohol raises the body temperature. Alcohol actually lowers the body temperature. 5. During the reign of William III, a garden fountain was once used as a giant punch bowl. The recipe included 560 gallons of brandy, 1200 pounds of sugar, 25,000 lemons, 20 gallons of lime juice, and five pounds of nutmeg. The bartender rowed around in a small boat, filling up guests' punch cups. 6. Methyphobia is fear of alcohol. 7. In England, in days gone by, a whistle was baked into the rim or handle of ceramic cups used by pub patrons. When they wanted a refill, they used the whistle to get service. So when people went drinking, they would "wet their whistle." 8. It's impossible to create a beverage of over 18% alcohol by fermentation alone. 9. British men have been found twice as likely to know the price of their beer as their partner's bra size. A poll reported in Britain's Prima magazine found that 77% of males knew how much their beer costs but only 38% knew the correct size of their mate's bra. 10. Most vegetable and almost all fruits contain a small amount of alcohol in them. 11. A beer lover or enthusiast is called a cerevisaphile. 12. Collecting beer mats is called tegestology. 13. The oldest brewery in the United States is supposedly Yuengling in Pottsville, Pennsylvania - founded in 1829. 14. The longest pub name in the UK is 'The Old Thirteenth Cheshire Astley Volunteer Rifleman Corps Inn', Stalybridge, Manchester.

The origin of the catchphrase 'It's a Dog's Life' is obscure. One of the earliest popular reference is Charlie Chaplin's 1918 film called 'A Dog's Life'. There is also a well known 1955 film by Herman Hoffman, this title include the It's - 'It's a Dog's Life'. The phrase is so evocative of the downtrodden hero, that it's perfect for Charles M. Schulz's Snoopy. It's a dog's life has also inspired music and also T.V. episodes of popular programs such as 'Murder She Wrote'.

Is it a Dog's Life Anymore? There was a time when dogs weren't allowed in the house. Dogs were fed scraps and if they were lucky they had a kennels. Thus a whole family of sayings arose around 'It's a dogs life'. For example, going to the dogs, dog tired, dog's dinner, dogsbody and dog eat dog. However, nowadays, dogs have it cushy, they live indoors are pampered with dog food, and even get their own dog basket. In consequence the young generation are perplexed by the saying, 'It's a dogs life'.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13

FOR THE FALLEN Poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), published in The Times newspaper on 21st September 1914 With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain.

THE SOLDIER Poem by Rupert Brooke IF I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever England. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam, A body of England's, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by the suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given; Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under an English heaven. DUMB CRIMINAL STORIES For a trio of drug thieves, it was their

lucky day. They broke into a home in Silver Springs, Florida, and discovered three jars of cocaine. They took it home and snorted the contents. That’s when they discovered that the jars were in fact urns, and that they were snorting the cremains of the victim’s husband and two dogs.

................................... When an attempted robbery at a

Lowes Home Improvement store went awry, Milton J. Hodges fled across the street and jumped a fence … right into the Cypress Cove Nudist Resort & Spa. As the Orlando Sentinel pointed out,“As one of the only folks wearing clothing,” Hodges was easily spotted by police.

................................... It’s the worst possible time to faint—

in the middle of robbing a bank. But that’s what happened to a Beavercreek, Ohio, thief. The teller called 911 and asked for medics. But you have to applaud the man’s stick-to-itiveness. While the ambulance was en route, the suspect handed a note to the teller demanding all her cash.

................................... The victim’s jewellery was missing,

the electronics were gone, and a window was smashed. No wonder she was hysterical when officer Charanjit Meharu of the

Calgary police arrived. Then her Frenchspeaking father called. Speaking in French, she explained that it was all a scam in order to get the insurance money. What she didn’t suspect was that Officer Meharu speaks six languages, including French.

................................... A 12-year-old boy adamantly denied

having stolen an iPhone when questioned by police at his home. And then the iPhone rang in his closet. Okay, yes, he stole that. But as for the Blackberry he was also accused of stealing, he double-adamantly denied… *RING!!*

................................... Don’t you hate it when you suffer a

heart attack and think you’re going to die, so you confess to a 17-year-old murder, only to find out you’re not going to die and then get sentenced to life in prison as a result? Yeah, so does James Washington, of Nashville, because it happened to him.

................................... Following a dispute, Craig Aylesworth,

of Bithlo, Florida, allegedly tossed a Molotov Cocktail at his neighbour’s trailer home … just as the winds shifted, sending embers on to his own trailer. Luckily, he was arrested, since he no longer had a home of his own to return to.

A San Francisco thief pedalled his bike

up to a woman on the sidewalk, snatched the iPhone out of her hands, and rode away. Unknown to him, the woman was in the middle of demonstrating the iPhone’s new GPS tracking device, which worked—the thief was captured minutes later

................................... Anthony Kenneth Mastrogiovanni

was impersonating a police officer when he pulled over another car for speeding. The driver quickly sussed out that Mastrogiovanni was fibbing since he, too, was a cop, but in his case, the kind of cop who doesn’t have to pretend he’s a cop because he really is a cop. Mastrogiovanni was arrested for impersonating a police officer.

................................... How convenient! Only a few months

earlier, an Iowa City, Iowa, man had his driver’s license stolen. Then who should show up at the bar where he worked as a bouncer, but the thief brandishing the bouncer’s very own license as his form of ID.

• THE PREPARATION Believe it or not, the preparation starts a whole week before! But for those of you who are about to turn over after thinking ‘I’ve no time for that!’ it is simple prep that will take minutes. Start by exfoliating your entire body to start smoothing out the skin – I’ve never found an exfoliator that rivals Fake Bake’s Passion Fruit Body Polish. Use exfoliator gloves (found in chemists around town) to work the scrub in – I strongly advise to do this in the shower – dry scrub in the bathtub is a nightmare to clean! Scrub the face with a lighter exfoliator and only do this once the week before and once a couple of nights before your night out. Up your skincare routine if you aren’t maintaining a good routine already – it’s so important to remove all make up before bed and to apply the creams or serums that are suitable for your skin type – it will ensure make up will be applied better and will last for much longer! Cleansing and moisturising are everyday musts – I don’t believe in toners and think they’re a waste of money so count this out of the routine to save money and time! Paint your toenails 1-2 days before your night out for it to settle – painting them on the day is pretty risky as smudging can easily happen even hours after application if RM 36

you put shoes on. Remember to use a good basecoat to prevent them from staining the nails; two coats of colour for coverage then a shiny topcoat for overall finish. Gel nails or French tips are the way to go for your hands for the Christmas look. Unfortunately nail polish isn’t as long lasting as we’d like on our busy hands; this is why the gel nails concept was introduced – they are so durable and look fantastic with the added extension. The French manicure can get a bad name from looking too ‘natural’ and not jazzy enough for an event – having a glitter undercoat added to the nail bed will lift the look and make it totally glam! If you’re opting for this polish then the day before or on the day is the best time to get this done. Hair control is an important one to take heed of before your night out. If you’re a regular with waxing then try and have waxing done 2-3 days before the night out – to ensure any redness dies down and that skin is prepped and ready for tanning (if you’re going for a tan!) For shaving and tweezing the day before is sufficient, but at all costs avoid shaving over an area that you’ve had a fake tan done on, as it will streak and possibly ruin it! Fake tan. Oh I can almost feel the shudders!

Fake tanning still get’s such a bad name as there are so many disastrous examples of tans gone wrong out there. But a tan done correctly can be the difference from pasty and grey versus glowing and healthy! It is great for complimenting make up, as well making you feel slimmer and more toned. I’d be lying if I started recommending shop brands – they are getting more and more expensive and don’t deliver the results! Fake Bake, St Tropez and Sienna are the way forward in the tanning revolution. Try and go for something different for your hair – like I said before, it’s the one night of the year that different is very much IN! If you want to go for a more rugged look then wash your hair the day before but leave out the conditioner.Try not to frazzle your hair with straighteners as this will make it harder to work with on the night. If you want curls then hair spray is your best friend. Some clever supportive underwear is a must if your outfit leaves opportunity for those love handles to make an appearance.

• ON THE DAY Ensure you get a good nights kip the night before so that you’re nice and refreshed – and if you’re flagging during the day try and get a couple of hours kip in the afternoon – poor energy levels and fatigue (or a

hangover!) will ruin a night out before it’s even started.Try and eat energy rich foods to give you an extra boost (fruit, vegetables and wholegrain foods) and drink plenty water to ensure you don’t dehydrate. Relax and ensure you have plenty time to get ready – rushing will make you feel harassed and agitated. Have your outfit well and truly organised so that there’s no frustrated cries of ‘NOTHING FITS ME – I have NO clothes that I can wear tonight!’ If I’ve been in that situation once I’ve been there a thousand times.

to wear those elaborate earrings you bought months ago but haven’t had the guts to wear yet! Try and match your hand bag as best you can as this can make or break a look.

You’re now ready for your night out – have a good one! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!

Put on some funky tunes to up your mood and get you excited – dulcet tones just won’t cut it I’m afraid! Apply a shimmery body lotion around your collar bone and down the arms to add an extra element of glamour.Take good time doing your make up – having a thorough look after each section of makeup.Try to focus on one area that you’d like to emphasise i.e. lips or eyes and make it stand out – avoid the clown look but don’t be afraid to experiment with some glitter and eyeliner. Accessorise with bold costume jewellery or eye catching gold’s/silvers. Don’t be afraid

LET'S GET Behaving yourself and looking your best at the company Christmas party is something you’ll never regret doing. Getting drunk and dancing too much or showing up wildly underdressed is really something that should be reserved for your friends and family Here's a few basic suggestions for getting it right this year without looking like a try-hard. Also, don't wear a Santa hat! ASK AROUND ABOUT THE DRESS CODE If you’re new to the company or the party is in a different location from last year, casually ask a few trusted coworkers how they plan to interpret the dress code. You don’t want to be the guy in khakis when everyone else is in a suit, or miss the memo on wearing the company colors and look like you can’t follow directions.

TREAT YOURSELF TO SOMETHING NEW No matter how formal the event will be, you should look a little bit festive at your holiday party. At the very least your boss will appreciate it, which definitely counts for something. A new sweater, button-down, or suit that your coworkers haven’t seen you in a thousand times will go a long way towards checking this box, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be velvet, tartan, or bright red to count.

PLAN YOUR OUTERWEAR AND ACCESSORIES This is not the night to be dragging your gym bag and gigantic parka along with you to the party, and then the after-party. Ditch the bulk and plan your outfit down to your topcoat, scarf, and gloves—you

never know who you’ll be sharing a cab or that once-ayear smoke with, and these details will not be lost on your companions (no matter how drunk they might seem).

FIGURE OUT YOUR WORK-TO-PARTY STRATEGY

Unless the party is going to be at a dive bar, don’t wear the same outfit to work that day. If you can, just go home and change. (You don’t want to show up on time anyway.) If you that’s not a possibility, wear a dressed-down, plain version of the outfit to work, then make a few swaps in order to bring it up a notch on your way out the door. No matter what, your outfit should get better as day turns into night, not worse.

WIN THE HANGOVER GAME Don’t be the guy who shows up to work the day after the holiday party looking like a dirty hamper. No matter how terrible you feel on the inside, put on one of your better office outfits—like a cashmere sweater, nice trousers, and hard-bottom shoes—and find a way to power through the day. If your superiors didn’t tip their hats to you last night, this will probably get their attention.

Howarth Gallery BURNLEY EXHIBITION 20th and 21st century art

Howarth Gallery, Burnley, invites you to an exhibition of 20th and 21st century art. Opening weekend Saturday and Sunday 19th and 20th November at 134-138 St. James Street, Burnley. Dazzle A limited edition screen print with uv varnishes by Sir Peter Blake. In 2015 Blake was commissioned to ‘dazzle’ a Mersey Ferry, resulting in the inspiration for the limited edition screen print ‘Dazzle’.The choice of a circular format for this new work has multiple resonances; the most obvious being that of a vinyl record, but also a badge, a film reel and a rose window. Dazzle Disc references Blake’s early work as well as his recent exploration of the ‘dazzle’ effect, which was originally a method of helping vessels avoid enemy detection in World War One. His choice of the word ‘disc’ is certainly suggestive of the influence music and musicians have had throughout his career.

Mackenzie Thorpe: The Seeds of Love The latest release for one of the county’s best loved and most collected artists. Born in Middlesborough in 1956 Mackenzie has inspired people of all ages with his art, using it as a vehicle to arouse an emotion or provoke a thought or allow the viewer to gain a different perspective.

A signed hand-painted and collaged monotype by Bruce McLeanBruce. McLean is one of the major figures of contemporary British Art. Born in 1944 he studied at Glasgow School of Art (1961-63) and at St. Martin's in London (1963-66), where he was taught by Sir Anthony Caro and Phillip King.

Bruce Mclean: Tree, Fern and Shadow

McLean lead the development of Conceptual art in Britain in the 1960s, often working outside in the urban and suburban landscape. Some of his works brilliantly sent up the solemnity of the art world and mocked established art forms. In 1972 he was given a one day retrospective at the Tate Gallery at the age of 27 (King for a Day). His work is in private and public collections world-wide including the Tate Gallery, Arts Council of Great Britain, Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art, Edinburgh and the British Council. He has had numerous one man shows in Europe, North America, and Japan.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT TREE

Look for a tree that has been freshly cut - bright, shiny needles (not browning or withered) are a good sign. Try giving the branches a shake: if a lot of needles fall off, the tree is past its best. Measure the space you want your tree to fit in before you leave the house: it can be very hard to estimate a tree's size by eye. Don’t forget, the tree stand could add 15cm to the height. Wear gloves, so you can transport the tree to your car or home without pricking your hands: some trees' needles are very sharp. There is a wide range of Christmas trees, all different in appearance, and some more likely to drop needles than other. Some of the most popular are as follows: NORWAY SPRUCE – pyramid in shape, with a tendency to drop needles.

NORDMANN FIR – dark green foliage and soft leaves, suited to fewer decorations. A popular choice with the ability to hold its needles well.

BLUE SPRUCE – elegant with natural blue foliage. FRASER FIR – leaner in shape with much denser foliage, ideal in a smaller room. RM 46

CHOOSING THE MOST EFFECTIVE CARPET CLEANER First and foremost, you should know what your choices are in cleaning methods and know which one is the one you want to choose. There are several ways to consider. A dry extraction type of cleaning will use a compound that has detergents in it that will literally free stains and dirt to allow them to be vacuumed up. There are absorbent pads which will rub into the carpet through a spinning action. A dry foam may be used by applying foam to the

carpet and then vacuumed up with a wet vacuum. You can also choose a vacuum that uses stronger chemicals and strong suction to get dirt out. Choose the method that is more right for your needs. Once you know what your options are, you can begin to talk to friends and family for recommendations. Get some estimates! Find out the overall price and what is extra. What chemicals will be used? Will they use deodorizers for homes with pets? How long does the process take and to dry? Will they move the furniture? You will want to insure that the chemicals that are used are safe for you, your children and your pets. Also, you will want to tell the company what type of carpeting you have. If you do not, and you have a type that will shrink or change color through the cleaning process, you may be in trouble. But most companies will ask you. It is very important to know who is coming into your home. Make sure that you know the history of the carpet cleaner as well as to ask if background checks are done on the employees.Take steps to keep you and your loved ones safe. Even home carpet cleaning machines will not do as good of a job as a professional can do. And, when you use these carpet cleaners you can help to preserve your carpeting for many years to come. Lastly, it can help many individuals who have allergies to feel better when they have clean carpeting. So, it just makes sense to have your carpets professionally cleaned.

DRESSING THE CHRISTMAS TABLE

The presents are wrapped, the decorations are up and the fridge is stocked. The following points talk us through the finer details, like dressing the Christmas table: PLAN AHEAD Make a list of all the dishes you will be serving on the big day. The night before Christmas get out all of your big serving dishes and mark each one with a post-it note for what you will serve on every plate. This way you won't be hunting around for the gravy boat come dinnertime. The presents are wrapped, the decorations are up and the fridge is stocked, as the big day approaches, take time to plan the finer details such as dressing the table and getting the dinner on it in one piece.

PLACE SETTINGS Creating homemade place settings is a great way to welcome your guests to the table and adds a personal touch. Get the kids to make these sweet name place cookies. Wrap up in cellophane and tie with pretty ribbons. Theme your table for a dramatic effect. Start by matching the colours to your dining room or other decorations. Use a simple tablecloth with a decorative table runner to create a central focus point. For a vintage theme look out for dramatic candelabras, lace napkins and antique napkin holders. Or follow the trend for a hunting lodge-themed interior with pinecone name placeholders, rustic fabrics for napkins and taxidermy-inspired centrepieces.

Look out for recipes, which can be prepared a day or two in advance. You can blanche carrots and greens, peel and boil potatoes, make stuffing, wrap sausages in bacon and make all your sauces on Christmas Eve. Or why not have a couple of things already cooked and stashed in the freezer? These Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes can be cooked from frozen, leaving you time to concentrate on dressing the table. If you don't have time to make all the dinner accompaniments, shopbought can still look beautiful. Decant sauces into pretty serving bowls, scatter cranberry sauce with a little orange zest and swirl a little melted butter, a few thyme leaves and some grated nutmeg into bread sauce. Wrap ready-made stuffing balls in half a slice of bacon and skewer with a rosemary stick.

CREATE HEIGHT Your centrepiece will be the focus of the table, but you don't want it to use up valuable space. Pick candelabras or vases with narrow bases so you can still see across the table and have plenty of space for the food. Set up a small table or sideboard as a bar close to your dining table. Make sure you have a selection of drinks, glasses, ice and spare napkins so you don't have to leave the table to fetch extra refreshments. Christmas dinner wouldn't be the same without a glorious steamed pudding. To make sure yours is ready to serve up on time, and to save hob space for your veggies, you can reheat your pudding in a slow cooker. Plug your slow cooker in (in another room if you want to save counter space) and half fill with boiling water. Place your pudding in the slow cooker and leave to steam for at least 2 hours or for up to 4 hours.

SUPPORTING HISTORY Ever wondered how Pudsey got his name? Read about over half a century of BBC Children in Need, our annual Appeal Night telethons, and discover just how much money we'll be giving to UK charities this year. The BBC's first ever broadcast appeal for children was a five-minute radio broadcast

on Christmas Day in 1927.The response was phenomenal and it raised ÂŁ1,143 18s 3d which was split between 4 prominent children's charities. The first televised appeal was the 1955 'Children's Hour Christmas Appeal', presented by Sooty and Harry Corbett. The Christmas Day Appeals continued on TV and radio right up until 1979, raising a total of ÂŁ625,836. The presenters included Terry Hall, Eamonn Andrews, Leslie Crowther, Michael Aspel and the rising star of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show - Terry Wogan - who made his debut appearance in 1978.

IN-SITU IN-SITU IS A DYNAMIC ARTIST LED NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATION BASED IN PENDLE, LANCASHIRE, FORMED IN 2012 BY PAUL HARTLEY, KERRY MORRISON AND WILLIAM TITLEY. In-Situ was born from a shared desire to bring art into the existing cultures of Pendle. Through collaborative community projects, events and artist residencies, their work connects to and reflects the people and place, creating socially engaging art of the highest calibre. “In-Situ’s vision is to be part of everyday life. For our art to be an art of action. For our art to contribute to society as a whole. For our art to challenge current thinking about environment, people place and culture” Kerry Morrison, Director, In-Situ. Through a range of art processes (performance, film, installations, drawings, collecting, and more), open conversations, and partnerships with local organisations, they are gaining an ever deepening understanding of where they live and work, responding to it sensitively and meaningfully as artists. Some of their latest work introduces US artist Suzanne Lacy as part of their Residency Programme. Supported by Super Slow Way, they worked with 1,000 people from across Pendle on a mass participation project this year, exploring the role of community vocalisation. Drawing on multiple traditions such as Shape Note Singing, Nasheed, Mill Ballads and Dhikr Chanting, with the purpose of bringing people together to share and experience each other’s lives and cultures. This culminated in a three-day production at Brierfield Mill, consisting of filmed BBC performances, a mill workers reunion, tours, interviews and a celebration banquet for 600 people with large scale community conversation. “This project encouraged conversation between people and their community, changing people’s perception of the place that they live in, to make people feel proud to speak and act with confidence and to create more resilient and innovative communities. Our mission, to help them find solutions to local issues and challenges, find new ways of seeing the world and support

them in being actively engaged in their futures” Paul Hartley, Director, In-Situ. Also involved in their Residency programme is artist Helmut Lemke who has set up the ISBCA Radio (In-Situ Brierfield Community Art Radio), based in BAIC (Brierfield Action in the Community Centre). The Radio consists of three main programmes strands covering local issues/news, In-Situ projects and contemporary art, along with a range of special guests and presenters from the local area. “This is a fantastic opportunity to produce a cultural and creative expression within the community, as a member of CMA (Community Media Association), we will be providing people with the skills and knowledge to prepare and present their own radio programmes through regular workshops.” Helmut Lemke, Presenter, ISBCA Radio. Alongside these projects In-Situ has been developing a new community hub in the heart of Nelson. Originally the old post office,The Shop offers an exciting new space for people to come to relax and get creative. This unique hub is now home to Nelson’s first salvaged food café, using fresh donated food from Lidl and Morrisons, along with organic vegetables from a local allotment they prepare homemade soups, sandwiches and cakes for a pay what you feel price. “We are really pleased to be involved in this new phase of The Shop as it becomes home to a number of regular exciting events and creative activities for everyone to enjoy. Along with showcasing a variety of arts and crafts from local emerging talent around Pendle,The Shop also features artist studio’s, a pop up cinema, vintage boutiques, local crafts and artwork, a monthly exhibition, classes, workshops and events such as our 50’s-80’s Revival night” Paul Hartley, Director, In-Situ. BE BEAUTIFUL

Christmas is approaching fast, and lots of people not only tend to ruin their usual diets, but they also gain a few extra pounds. Based on studies, the majority of people tend to gain additional weight during the holiday season that starts at the Christmas Eve and ends with the New Year celebrations. Excessive eating is claimed to be the main cause for the additional weight gain, but it is also due to lack of physical activity and exercise. A lot of individuals out there tend to set aside their fitness routines during the holidays since they believe that they do not have enough time to perform their workouts. And because they feel guilty after the holiday season, most of the gyms and fitness centres are packed with fresh members. Always bear in mind that you can still enjoy the holidays and stay fit at the same time. If you want to stay fit during the holiday season, especially during Christmas and the New Year’s Eve, here are some useful tips that might help you:

1. Eat Before Heading Out First, it is best that you eat something before heading out to visits, trips or family dinners. By doing so, you will no longer be tempted to eat a lot or overindulge yourself since you have already eaten. Skipping on meals is not a good idea either, because you will only be forced to eat more later.

2. Select The Treats Make sure to select the treats that you eat in a wise manner. You should choose something that you can only enjoy during the holiday season and not something that is readily available all the time.

3. Avoid Skipping Meals Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast! Even though it can be tempting to skip on certain meals, believing that it will make up for the treats you consumed in the previous day, don’t do it because it will only lead to counterproductive results.

4. Drink With Moderation It is best to regulate your drinking since alcohol, coke or other juices will only add more calories to the ones you already eaten!

5. Be Active You should still perform your fitness routine whenever possible and if you can’t do that, simply walk more, park your car some distance away from the store or just use the stairs!

6. Get Out Of The House Make the holidays a family affair and plan outdoor activities where everyone is involved. Even a snowball fight in the backyard will burn a lot of calories and will keep the children entertained.

7. Drink A Lot Of Water This can satiate your appetite as well as keep you hydrated at all times. And it will also prevent a possible hangover if you overdo it with alcohol.

We started to refurbish it in 2010 and it took about 2 years to complete. We removed the paint off one of the panels and decided that the wood beneath was so nice we had to continue with it all. At one time the front of the arcade must have been covered in artificial marble effect formica. The cafe was the first shop to open in late 2012, shortly followed by the electronic cigarette shop. Work was still being carried out to the front of the

arcade during this time. The sweet shop opened in September of that year shortly followed by the shoe shop. Now the arcade consists of a cafe, barbers, art shop, two clothes shops, a bakers, a natural therapy centre, antique bric a brac, electronic cigarette shop, a bakers, shoe shop and an old fashioned sweet shop.

It has a wonderful atmosphere as everyone is so friendly!

CHOOSING THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS GIFT IT IS ALMOST CHRISTMAS AND MANY OF US ARE STILL SCRAMBLING AROUND TRYING TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT GIFT FOR A FRIEND OR RELATIVE. What do they want? What do they need? What can we buy? We can spend hours in shops asking ourselves these questions. The problem is that we think about giving gifts as the exchange of physical objects. A useful alternative is to think of a gift as communication. When you give a gift to someone, what you are actually doing is speaking to them. You buy, make or discover a gift that says something to the receiver. They receive the gift, and if they are perceptive, they understand your message. Of course this is obvious, but somehow we forget it when we go to choose gifts. We focus first on the object or the need, then check what message it conveys. Ask yourself first, “What do I want to say to this person?”Then move on to “What can I give them that will communicate this?”.This is opposite to the more common “What can I buy them?” and then “What will they think of it?” If you follow this method, then not only will it make buying a present easier, it will get across the exact message you want to portray.

Layering

There is a reason layering is such a big trend this season: it’s a massively practical way to dress when it’s really cold. So don’t be afraid to pile on the layers. A turtleneck, under a sweater, under a jacket, under a coat, for instance, will definitely keep you warm. So will a dress or skirt over a pair of pants (much warmer than a pair of tights). When it’s really, really cold outside, sometimes even the items in your wardrobe that you always depend on (everything from ripped jeans to cashmere sweaters) no longer cut it.This is when you have to find creative ways to layer under your clothes that no one will notice. You can, for instance, throw a pair of tights or sheer stockings under a pair of ripped jeans or layer a form-fitting sweater over a long-sleeve T-shirt. Also don’t be afraid to whip out the long johns you normally reserve for ski trips—sometimes during the winter they’ll come in just as handy for the walk to work.

Let Your Boots Steal The Show

Great winter style really boils down to a great pair of boots. Got

a great pair of over-the-knee boots? Show them off pairing them with a short dress. Have killer ankle boots you want to make sure the world gets to see? Pair them with cuffed jeans or a dress. And if it’s snowing and you are forced to wear less than fashionable snow boots? Use them as a jumping off point to put together a great new inventive outfit, rather than just throwing them on with just anything.

Belt Your Coats To Give Them New Life

By the middle of winter it’s pretty inevitable that you’re going to

start to feel some fatigue when it comes to putting on your boring old winter coat day after day. Add new life to your coat simply by belting it. Cinching your waist will make it seem almost like you have a brand new coat. The best news of all: this styling trick will work with just about any coat style.

Fur

There aren’t many redeeming factors about living through really

cold weather fashion wise. The one being it’s the only time during the year that you can wear fur. So just have fun with it! You can wear fur with just about anything to give your outfit an instant upgrade: invest in a statement fur topper, throw on a fur vest or stole over your winter coat to give it some new life or find cool fur accent pieces like fur collars or even fur mittens to liven up your winter outfits.

WINTER DRIVING HELP YOUR CAR COPE

None of us particularly enjoys driving in these winter months but being prepared will make it less stressful, especially for your car. The following tips may help you cope better with the various seasonal weather hazards. However, as we all know, many of these conditions can occur at any time of year.

• BATTERY AND ELECTRICS Battery failure is the most common cause of winter breakdowns and the extra demand on it from lights, heaters and wipers take its toll. If you don’t use your car for days at a time, it’s worth a regular overnight trickle charge to give the battery a bit of extra help. Start the engine before turning on the lights, heaters and wipers and other electrical systems. Save the battery’s energy – switch off the rear screen heater if it doesn’t do it automatically and turn off the fan heater once you’ve got the car warmed up and windows are clear. If the engine doesn’t start first time, try again in short bursts and give the battery a rest of about 30 seconds between each attempt. How old is your battery? They rarely last longer than five years so if it’s reaching

RM 78

retirement age, best to change it before setting off on a long winter journey.

•ANTIFREEZE

Most modern cars use a long life antifreeze and it’s important to get the concentration right so if you’re not sure, get advice from your garage because a frozen engine block will cost hundreds of pounds to fix.

•TYRES

Apart from remote, rural areas affected by heavy snow, winter tyres and snow chains are rarely needed in the UK but make sure your

REVIEW MAGAZINE

normal tyres have at least 3mm of tread. Check your tyre pressure every couple of weeks, when the car and engine is cold, for a more accurate reading before the air has expanded and don’t be tempted to reduce pressure for better grip.

Don’t leave wipers in the ‘on’ position when you turn off the engine – if they freeze to the screen it can cause damage. Use screen wash. Normally use a 50-50 mix and always keep some extra in the car when travelling.

Don’t let it get under a quarter of a tank – your journey may take longer than expected in winter.

It makes sense to anticipate delays in bad weather, possible diversions and, if you do break down perhaps a longer wait for help. Along with the usual essentials such as a first aid kit, warning triangle, high visibility vest, mobile phone and torch, some extra winter help may come in handy. An old carpet or thick cardboard in case you get stuck and need a bit of extra traction under the wheels along with a tow rope and battery jump leads. It’s sensible to take bottled water, snacks and a flask of hot tea or coffee and obviously warm, waterproof clothes and sturdy shoes even if you’re en route to a cocktail party!

• FUEL

• LOCKS & DOORS

A smear of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals will stop them freezing shut and a squirt of WD40 works on locks.

• VISIBILITY

Allow extra time for windscreens to clear properly and scrape snow and ice off wing mirrors, roofs and windows before setting off; keep an ice scraper in the car.You can be fined for driving while your vision is obscured. Lights are not just so you can see but so you can be seen too. Make sure your lights are clean and carry spare bulbs. Low winter sun can be blinding so don’t forget your sunglasses. Keep the windscreen clean inside and out. The constant use of wipers on snow and slush makes it smeary; replace wiper blades if necessary.

• USE COMMON SENSE

• DRIVING

Stopping distances are ten times longer in ice and snow. Pulling away in second gear gently will help avoid wheel spin but if you have an automatic, check the handbook for advice on which mode to select for winter driving when you don’t want to rely on the brakes so much.

•CINNAMON

Cinnamon is not only delicious, it’s great for you! This spice can help lower bad cholesterol while raising good cholesterol. According to the Mayo Clinic, being even just a little bit overweight can contribute to high cholesterol, so adding foods that lower the bad cholesterol can go a long way as you get healthy and lose weight. Cinnamon also has a positive effect on your blood sugar, making it particularly beneficial to diabetics. It’s high in polyphenols, which can act like insulin in your body. High blood sugar levels can lead to weight gain, making it important to control your sugar consumption. You can enjoy cinnamon by sprinkling it over cut fruit, mixing it in apple sauce, adding some flavor to your oatmeal, or making your own cinnamon tea. There are also a lot of lunch and dinner recipes that use cinnamon in different ways, such as a rub for meat (it’s mouthwatering on pork), a twist to homemade soup and stew, and in dishes using a homemade jerk sauce.
