DEALING WITH LOSING A LOVED ONE Allow yourself to experience your feelings. Losing someone you love is an emotionally devastating experience. In the aftermath of loss, you may find yourself grappling with a variety of feelings. It's very important that you allow yourself to feel what you are feeling, even if it's bad. Suppressing your feelings is not a good idea in the aftermath of loss.

Avoiding feelings of sadness can prolong the grieving process. Also, suppressing grief can lead to things like anger, anxiety, and substance abuse. Even if pausing to consider your feelings is painful, it's important you allow yourself to feel. Do not shy away from feelings of devastation and heartbreak. Allow yourself to cry when necessary. Certain types of death or loss may be particularly difficult to process.

Losing a child may provoke feelings of anger and injustice, for example. A suicide can lead to anger at the person who has died. With these kinds of losses, people often feel bad about their emotions or think how they're feeling is inappropriate or insensitive. Keep in mind no feelings are inherently good or bad. How you choose to act on your feelings can have negative consequences, but having a range of powerful emotions is normal. You should not judge yourself for feeling what you're feeling. Not all emotions in the immediate aftermath of loss are negative. It's not uncommon to feel gratitude for having been close to someone, even if they're gone. You may also find yourself smiling over fond memories. Many people find, when coping with loss, that they veer between laughter and tears. Understand all these emotions are healthy and necessary when it comes to processing loss. Express your feelings to others. Talking to others is very important following the loss of a loved one. Your friends and family members may not be able to provide you with direct advice, but simply

having someone to listen can be cathartic. Sometimes stating your feelings out loud can help you work through them. After a loss, seek out understanding friends and family members. Express your feelings to them and seek comfort and support. Find creative outlets. Even if you're not typically a creative person, using a creative medium to express your feelings can give your grief a tangible form. Make a scrapbook or photo album commemorating your lost loved one. Write a poem, essay, or short story about your relationship with that person. Draw or paint out your feelings in abstract images and colours. This can help you get your feelings outside your own head in a concrete manner, helping you better process your emotions.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SUMMER 1-The word “summer” is from the Proto-Indo-European root *sam-, meaning summer. The root *sam is a variant from the Proto-Indo-European root *sem-, which means “together/one.” 2-The “dog days of summer” refer to the weeks between July 3 and August 11 and are named after the Dog Star (Sirius) in the Canis Major constellation. The ancient Greeks blamed Sirius for the hot temperatures, drought, discomfort, and sickness that occurred during the summer. 3-Summer is the by far the busiest time at cinema, and Hollywood always hopes to earn a significant portion of total annual ticket sales through summer blockbuster months. To date, the top 10 most famous summer blockbusters of all time are 1) Jaws, 2) Star Wars, 3) Jurassic Park, 4) The Dark Knight, 5) Raiders of the Lost Ark, 6) E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, 7) Forrest Gump, 8) Ghostbusters, 9) Animal House, and 10) Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In the United States, over 650 million long-distance summer trips are made. 4-In the United States, the top 5 most popular summer vacations are 1) beach/ocean (45%), 2) a famous city (42%), 3) national parks (21%), 4) a lake (17%), and 5) a resort (14%). 5-The top 5 most popular summer vacation activities in the United States are 1) shopping (54%), 2) visiting historical sites (49%), 3) swimming/water sports (49%), 4) going to a park or national park (46%), and 5) sightseeing tours (46%). 6-The Eiffel Tower is 6 inches taller in the summer than in the winter. In the summer heat, the iron in France’s Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than 6 inches. 7-The month of June was named after either Juniores, the lower branch of the roman Senate, or Juno, the wife of Jupiter. 8-Marc Antony named the month of July, in honor of Julius Caesar. 9-The month of August was named for Julius Caeser’s adopted nephew Gaius Julius Caesar Octavius, who held the title “Augustus.” He named the month after himself. 10- “September” is from the Latin word septem, meaning “seven.” 11-Both “equinox” and “solstice” refer to the path of the sun throughout the year. During a solstice, the sun is either at its northernmost point (Tropic of Cancer) or it is at its southernmost point (Tropic of Capricorn). An equinox is either of the two days each year when the sun crosses the equator and both day and night are equally long. 12-The word “solstice” is from the Latin solstitium, which is from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop) because it seems as if the sun stops at the solstice. 13-In the Northern Hemisphere, summer solstice occurs sometime between June 20 and June 22, and between December 20 and December 23 in the Southern Hemisphere. 14-Scientists argue that summer babies are significantly more likely to suffer from mood swings than babies born in other seasons. WORLD'S DUMBEST GETAWAY DONKEY

DISAPPOINTING DISGUISE

One of the most important aspects of a successful robbery is securing a good getaway vehicle. A fast car or maybe a motorcycle would make a good choice. You know what isn’t a good choice? A donkey. That didn’t stop a gang of thieves from Colombia. Their crime spree started when they abducted Xavi, a 10-yearold donkey, from his owner. This happened 12 hours before the main robbery, so they had plenty of time to look for a car (or really anything but a donkey), but they decided to stick to the donkey plan. The actual heist went pretty well. The three criminals robbed a convenience store, stealing food and rum. Then they loaded their goods onto the donkey and prepared to make their escape, but Xavi decided not to cooperate. Up until this point, police were not even aware that a robbery had taken place, but Xavi started making so much noise that he attracted the attention of some nearby officers. The robbers fled on foot, leaving behind Xavi— along with, of course, all of the stolen goods loaded onto him.

A good disguise obviously needs to hide your true identity. Furthermore, a good disguise needs to be inconspicuous so you can blend in with the crowd. The disguise chosen by Dennis Hawkins, a 48-year-old Pittsburgh man who decided to rob a bank, failed on both counts. His disguise consisted of a woman’s blonde wig, a pair of fake breasts, and clown pants. The first problem was that the get-up revealed his face, which was captured on CCTV surveillance. You might guess that Mr. Hawkins wanted to fool people into thinking he was a woman. In that case, he should have considered getting rid of his mustache and goatee. The second

problem was that his disguise was not exactly inconspicuous. Right after police released a description to the public, a gas station attendant called to report someone sporting that unique look while trying to steal a car. And as if the man were not noticeable enough, when police arrived, they found Hawkins covered in red paint from a dye pack exploding in his face.

WORDS OF WISE If you look like your passport picture, you probably need the trip. Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognise a mistake when you make it again.

LITTLE LAUGHS

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused.

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you don't have a leg to stand on.

On the keyboard of life, always keep one finger on the Escape key. Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have film.

CRIMINALS Post-robbery, he’d tried to mug a woman and get away in her car. She just ran off, taking the keys with her.

IS THAT THE ALARM? In August 1995, Klaus Schmidt tried to rob a bank in Berlin by walking in with a pistol and demanding money. So far, this is pretty standard for a bank heist. However, as the robbery progressed, the bank employees noticed that the criminal was acting rather strangely. At one point, one of them asked the robber if he needed a bag, and he replied, “You’re damn right it’s

a real gun!” This made them realize that Schmidt had a noticeable handicap—he was deaf.Taking advantage, one employee set off the alarm. Schmidt remained oblivious. Even while the incredibly loud alarm was going off and the police approached the bank, the robber remained calm and patient, occasionally spouting

threats. When the police arrived, they quickly took the criminal into custody. However, Schmidt found a way to turn a negative into a positive— he tried to sue the bank for exploiting his disability. FREE BEER AVAILABLE In 2011, Derbyshire police used a similar strategy by offering wanted criminals free beer. The men received notices through undercover officers informing them that they’d won a crate of beer each. To collect, they needed to contact the company that ran the promotion. Many were tempted by the prospect. Nineteen fugitives called the assigned number, setting up a time and place to collect their winnings. Tragically, there was no free beer when they turned up—just police officers ready to take them into custody.

WISDOM

If you think there is good in everybody, you haven't met everybody. You never truly understand something until you can explain it to your grandmother. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said. One good turn gets the duvet. The second mouse gets the cheese. Never miss a good chance to shut up. There are two theories to arguing with a woman. Neither theory works.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO ANTIQUES Buying antiques and collectables is not always easy.

exhibition centres and county showgrounds.

Perhaps more than in any other marketplace, it can be very difficult to know whether you are getting a good deal or not.

Most antiques and collectors’ fairs have no restriction on what can be sold, but there is also a wide range of specialist fairs. These fairs encourage specialist dealers to attend by focusing on one collecting area, such as postcards, toys or glass. If you are looking for fairs with a high level of good quality, older stock, you should also look for ‘datelined’ fairs.

Condition, history, age, authenticity and purchase location can all affect the price you pay – and what an item is worth. Antiques & Collectors’ Fairs Fairs come in many shapes and sizes – from village halls to

Dealers at datelined fairs are only

allowed to sell stock made before a certain year. Such fairs are often vetted, too – dealers’ stock is inspected by experts before the fair opens to ensure that it is of an acceptable age and quality and is accurately described.

If you are just starting out collecting – or just fancy a fun day out – smaller fairs, like the monthly fair held at Elsecar Heritage Centre, near Sheffield, can prove a fertile hunting ground for patient collectors.

A good example of such a fair is the Antiques for Everyone Fair, which is held at the Birmingham NEC. Stock at this fair is datelined to 1950 or earlier, depending on the type of antique. This fair provides an exceptional choice of high quality antiques at all price levels, with as many as 50,000 items on sale.

Smaller fairs also offer a more friendly and relaxing environment than larger fairs, making a good introduction to fair buying for many collectors.

A committee of antique experts vets each dealer’s stock before the fair opens,. Fairs provide a great opportunity to locate items you would never find any other way – a large fair like the Newark International Antiques & Collectors Fair will have hundreds or even thousands of dealers, each of whom will have a constantly-changing stock of items sourced from many different areas of the country.

Britain’s Most Dangerous Animals Killer Whales / Orca

Maybe this shouldn’t be on the list but then again this is possibly the most powerful predator on the planet. They are also known to commonly frequent the waters around the UK. Now, There aren’t any recorded unprovoked killer whale attacks but imagine if one of these monsters did turn bad… At up to 35 ft (10m) in length, weighing 10 tons and capable of swimming nearly 40 mph (60 km/h) the killer whale has little trouble tackling any size of prey. They have been known to take on sperm whales, blue whales and even great white sharks which they dispatch with little trouble. More commonly they prey on seals and sea lions which they kill with a headbut or a blow from the tail. With those credentials I figured I had to include the killer whale on this list – even though you are much more likely to be chased by a seal.

nip. There are around 15 British spiders that are on record as having bitten anyone. The severity varies from barely noticeable and a bit itchy to about as bad as a wasp sting. Anyone in the UK who hasn’t been living under a rock will probably have heard of the False Widow spider (Steatoda nobilis). This is the most venomous British spider and is becoming increasingly common. It’s related to the notorious Black Widow spiders and is kind of a watered down version. As well as a painful bite there can be a few system-wide symptoms like feeling unwell and even heart palpitations.

False WIdow Spider

Unlike Australia, for example, the UK is not known for its plethora of deadly biting spiders. In fact there isn’t a single record of anyone dying from a spider bite in Britain. But, that isn’t to say we don’t have a fair few eight-legged critters that are capable of giving a quite nasty

with an angry badger or an angry fox I’d take the fox any day. The point is though that a badger wouldn’t end up in a room with me as they are shy and retiring creatures. Foxes, however, often come into contact with humans. It used to just be angry chicken farmers or that wonderful upper class British establishment “the hunt”. Now-a-days there are urban foxes; the sort of fox that probably doesn’t even know where milk comes from. The concept of a fox attack was pretty alien to most people until June 2010 when nine-monthold twins were savaged by a fox that had crept into their house in London. Whilst the injuries didn’t prove life-threatening it showed that foxes were willing and able to attack humans. Whilst rare this is not the only documented fox attack. There have been at least two other attacks over the last several years

ug homes come in all shapes and sizes, from multi-level community apartments suitable for accommodating a wide variety of insects like ladybirds, lacewings and beetles, to individual houses for solitary, solo bees. You don’t need any expensive materials for either – you can just make them from stuff that’s normally lying around in your house and garden.

SMALL HOME

You’ll need:

- An empty drinks bottle, or catering-size coffee tin - A bunch of twigs, or some sticks of bamboo, or dead stems of flowers -Some wire -Some string

How to: The aim here is to recreate the nooks and crannies that insects love to live in. For something really basic, simply take your twigs or bamboo, tie them together with string and, with the wire, hang them under the branch of a tree, or attach to a sunny wall. Optionally, you can put them inside your coffee tin or plastic bottle, to hold them together. If you’re using a plastic bottle, cut the top off first. Another easy idea is to get an old log and drill holes in it. Place it in a dry spot that gets the sun. Job done. Wait for the tenants to move in.

LARGE APARTMENT

You’ll need

-Wooden pallets -Plastic bottles -Broken bricks and tiles -Broken plant pots -Corrugated cardboard -Drainpipes

LIFE...... Natural materials Logs & twigs Rotting wood Dry leaves Bark Hollow plant stems, or bamboo Straw and hay Rolls of turf Soil With a larger, multi-story, building, again the aim is to recreate the small burrowing places that insects love. You may also find that, due to its size, it also attracts other creatures such as toads and hedgehogs, who are always on the look-out for a warm place to stay. So try to create as many hiding places and nooks and crannies as you can. But try to get as many hiding-places and nooks and crannies in it as you can.

Building Instructions Find a suitable spot. Insects like cool, moist conditions with some sunlight, so a dappled area beneath a tree is good. Look for somewhere that’s not going to flood. The actual building process is a bit like making a cake, stacking one layer of material on top of another. Take a look at the picture here, and it’ll give you a good idea of what you should be aiming for. Wild bee hotel Lay a foundation of bricks in a rough square, the same size as one of your pallets, leaving gaps

in between. One at each corner will do. Scatter some dead leaves, woodchips and soil in the middle to attract frogs. Lay a pallet or strips of wood across the bricks to make a base for your first layer. Place some logs on top and then a few roll of hollow stems or bamboo. Put some straw and hay or wood chippings or pine cones in between. Keep going like this, adding one layer one top of another until it’s as high as you want. When you’ve reached the very top, make the structure waterproof, by laying some roofing felt or a sheet of polythene over it, as you would a garden shed. Alternatively, we have a variety of specially-designed bee and insect homes available to order online and in centre. They’re ideal for the garden, your balcony or patio.

LITTLE LAUGHS Standing in the park, I was wondering why a Frisbee gets larger the closer it gets. Then it hit me. I was watching the London Marathon and saw one runner dressed as a chicken and another runner dressed as an egg. I thought: 'This could be interesting' I needed a password eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar. Could be a Chinese Wispa. I had an argument with one of the seven dwarfs. He wasn’t happy. RM 17

Get set to snip First of all size up the shrub you're going to prune and get yourself the right cutting tool. It'll make the job easier for you, and produce cleaner, faster-healing cuts for the plant. When to trim The important difference with shrubs is between the early and late flowering varieties. What can be confusing though are plants such as hydrangeas, roses and clematis, because they have varieties which bloom early, late or even repeatedly. Evergreen shrubs can also be divided into early and late flowering varieties, but they usually need less pruning and in a slightly different way. If your shrub looks too thick, and the centre is not getting enough air and light, thin it by cutting branches where they attach to the main stem, or to a healthy bud on a strong stem. This is a better way of controlling a shrub's size than shearing which produces dense growth at the end of the branches, preventing light and air getting to the centre. LETS GO NUTS PEACANS :Delicious and versatile, pecans can also help keep you healthy. At just under 200 calories per one-ounce serving, pecans provide 3 grams of dietary fiber and over 19 vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, potassium and zinc. According to the USDA, pecans are ranked among the top 20 foods for antioxidant capacity. RM 22

Some research suggests that antioxidants play a role in reducing a variety of chronic diseases from cancer to heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease to vision loss. Pecans are also a rich source of oleic acid. Although more research is needed, early studies indicate that oleic acid, the same type of fatty acid found in olive oil, may help suppress a gene thought to

trigger breast cancer. PISTACHIO: Along with being one of the nuts containing the lowest amount of calories and fat, pistachios are also a nutritional powerhouse. This little nut is an excellent source of vitamin B6, copper and manganese and contains other essential vitamins and minerals. Studies show that

pistachios may have important health benefits and play a role in heart health, weight management and even lowering mortality rates. Researchers at Harvard University found that eating a daily handful of nuts, like pistachios, may boost health and longevity.

HOROSCOPE-GEMINI HOROSCOPE-CANCER MAY 21- JUNE 20 Saturn, the primary patron of Gemini, will be strengthened on account of the favorable position of Venus, who in any other situation would not stand out for goodwill towards this Zodiac sign. This is a good start, which will guarantee you the chance to use all the available resources with maximum effectiveness. In other words, at the current stage, circumstances will unfold quite successfully, and with a certain amount of perseverance, you could surpass even your own conceptions of a happy ending. In the area of work, it’s likely that situations will emerge which will require quick thinking. You’ll have to make a serious choice several times, but your celestial patrons don’t have the faintest hint of a doubt that you’ll be able to choose the right, most profitable course of action. On the “romantic front” the situation will develop less dynamically, but this doesn’t, of course, mean that something won’t work out for you. On the contrary, the first month of summer will bring you a lot of warmth and comfort in this regard, and many can expect fateful moments. However, due to the unfavorable position of Jupiter, you could easily slip up at the most critical point. You must be attentive, not tolerating negligence even in the small things, and it would still make sense to focus on cooperation, dealing with problems together. Failing this, you may not withstand the war against the world around. With respect to the area of work, the situation in June 2017 will develop steadily and, to a certain extent, cyclically. That is, the trends which Geminis identify as key at the start of the first ten-day period will be in their life again – they will return at least once more at the end of the second ten-day period. Some of you could take this as a second chance, others will not pay the situation any attention, because you will be busy with “more important” things. That is, everything could happen quite uniquely, but it’s important to understand: the first month of summer really could give you one more opportunity if you missed RM 30

the first. For those who don’t work for themselves, this could mean that you will get a new job, or that you will be offered an extremely important project, despite the fact that you made a mistake in some other area and really messed up. For Geminis who have their own businesses, this month will be successful even with the least amount of movement on their part. But working on yourself, entering into new business agreements, growing your business – all of these plans could have the most powerful and positive development. The important thing is not to forget about the position of Jupiter. You must think through everything down to the finest details, and don’t let yourself relax, otherwise you could lose the thing which you have been moving towards for so long.

In the sphere of personal emotions, Geminis will now have a lot of opportunities. In June 2017 many will be able to radically change their lives, but not in the usual sense. In actual fact you are more likely to change your attitude towards what is happening around you, being exposed to metamorphoses of your worldview, your attitudes towards life. And this is an extremely positive thing, which you have needed for a long time, and you know it yourself. It’s hard to say how successful single Geminis’ searches will prove to be. Some of you may get lucky, and find your fate right now. But this is not a key trend of the current stage. More importantly, now you will be able to strengthen your family ties, and also your friendships. It’s likely that some of you will meet a person who you will spend more than one decade with.

JUNE 21- JULY 22 Cancer, life has a lesson for you around every corner, if you just know how to look. That’s the rule you need to keep in mind this month. Starting on the 1st and 2nd and continuing all month long, just think: What can you learn from this? If nothing comes to mind, look harder. Make some plans on the 6th and 7th. Life, work, love: Think hard about what you want and where you’d like to be and how you’re going to get there. The Cancer June 2017 monthly horoscope forecasts that you’re in a terrific position to make things really happen on the very intense 12th and 13th. But if you don’t work really hard at it, you won’t succeed. Go ahead and free your mind for some intellectual fun and games on the 18th and 19th.Yes, you are ready to dominate in that game of Trivial Pursuit! Slow it way down, there, on the 23rd and 24th. After all, what’s the rush, Cancer? Are you really that worried about whether you’re a minute or two late? Why not stop and smell the roses, instead? Quiet down and listen hard: What message does your inner self want to relay to you on the 28th and 29th of June 2017? Wrap up the month with a spectacular day on the 30th. Cancer, if you’ve been feeling a little neglected by the romance deities, you may just need to take a new approach. Starting on the 1st and 2nd of June 2017, think about what you can learn from a particular romantic situation, rather than about what you didn’t get out of it. Sure, love can be rocky, and things don’t always work out well. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good experience. Plan your dream date on the 6th and 7th. Even if you don’t have anyone to go on it with, right now, just being able to visualize your ideal will help guide you to it. The June 2017 Cancer horoscope predicts that a very intense emotional connection rocks your world on the 12th and 13th. But you’ll need to work really hard at this, so be prepared.

Cancer, let your brain have a field day on the 18th and 19th. Then get some exercise! (Brains and brawn are attractive, you know!). Slow up and calm down on the 23rd and 24th. Instead of worrying about all-things-romantic, why not walk in the park? Listen (hard) to your inner self for best romantic results on the 28th and 29th. Have a great, loving day on the 30th.

As this month gets going on the 1st and 2nd, you should really concentrate on learning. Whether it’s a new computer program or a new language, you’ll really get a kick out of new knowledge. And the added bonus? These new skills will really nudge your career along, even if you can’t quite see how speaking beginner’s Swahili will help you be a better printer toner salesperson right now. Just trust that it will! (It will). The Cancer 2017 June monthly predictions suggest to draw up a scheme for getting the promotion you know you deserve on the 6th and 7th. Make things happen at work on the go-go-go 12th and 13th. Remember: Hard work is the essential ingredient. You need an intellectual challenge to be truly happy, so go out and get it on the 18th and 19th. Why rush on the 23rd and 24th? After all, everyone knows that’s a recipe for making a silly mistake. Listen to yourself on the 28th and 29th of June 2017.You know best what it is you want and what will make you happiest. You have a really winning day on the 30th.

HOLLYWOOD SUICIDES Dana Plato is known

mostly for her role as Kimberly on Diff’rent Strokes and for her troubled life. Dana Plato began working in the industry from a very early age, and by the time she got to Diff’rent Strokes at age 14 was already abusing alcohol and hard drugs. She was dismissed from Diff’rent Strokes in 1984 for an unplanned pregnancy. After Diff’rent Strokes, Plato hit hard times. She got breast implants and posed in playboy and could only find work in B-movies. Then she couldn’t even get those and wound up working in a dry cleaners and robbed a video store at gun point. After that she began working in softcore porn. A day before her death she went on the Howard Stern Show and talked about how she was clean and working to come back. The next day she OD’d on painkillers in her and her fiance’s RV, parked outside her fiance’s mother’s house. That was in 1999. In May 2010, her son committed suicide as well.

Friends speculated that Brandis was depressed about his career, but no one really knows why he took his own life.

LITTLE LAUGHS Peg Entwistle’s death is particularly shocking and tragic because it is more memorable and notable than her film career. Entwistle was born in the UK in 1908 and dreamed of the bright lights of Hollywood. She had a successful Broadway career before moving out west where she only had one film credit to her name. She played a small supporting role in a movie called Thirteen Women. When the film received bad reviews and her role was greatly reduced she decided to take her own life and did so in a dramatic fashion. She climbed to the top of the “H” in the famed Hollywood sign and jumped off. Her suicide note is also famed as it states: I am afraid, I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago, it would have saved a lot of pain. P.E. She was only 24.

My dad suggested I register for a donor card. He's a man after my own heart I met a painter who only paints using Japanese rice wine, but it was just saké for art’s sake. This bloke said to me: ‘I’m going to attack you with the neck of a guitar.’ I said: ‘Is that a fret?

Jonathan Brandis was a 90s

teen idol thanks to his starring role in the TV show SeaQuest. But he had actually been working since he was five years old. In fact, audiences already knew him from The NeverEnding Story II, It, and Ladybugs. At the peak of his popularity Brandis received as many as 4,000 fan letters a week and needed three studio guards to escort him through the mob of female fans onto the SeaQuest set. In November 2003 Brandis hanged himself. He was rushed to the hospital and died the next day. RM 33

22 BBQ AND GRILLING TIPS 1. Wash everything after handling raw meat, and don’t reuse the plate that you used for uncooked meat.

thaw out meat, do so overnight or all day in the refrigerator.

2. Have a spray bottle full of water nearby your grill in cause of flare-ups.

11. Don’t pierce your meat with a fork or prongs. The juices will escape, making the meat drier and less flavourful. Use a spatula or tongs to move and flip your food.

3. Using charcoal briquettes for your grill’s heat? Then light the coals about 30 minutes before to cooking. If you’re using lighter fluid, make sure the fire is completely out before slapping the meat on the grill, or else you’ll have the nasty fuel taste in your meat (believe me, I know this from experience). At this time, the charcoal should be mostly an ash-gray colour with a little bit of glowing red underneath.

12. Get a dutch oven or a large pot (depending on the amount of stuff you grill) with a lid when transporting your cooked meats inside. It will help keep your barbecue moist, juicy, and warm until it’s time to chow down.

4. Using a smoker? Light the charcoal with a chimney starter. It’s relatively quick to get some hot coals going and you won’t have to fret about getting nasty lighter fluid fumes in your smoker.

7. Cooking chicken? If you intend to eat the skin, rub the outside with a little butter or oil and then lightly season it. It’ll give the chicken a nice, crispy, savoury skin. Not eating the skin? Don’t season the outside, as it can’t penetrate the skin. 8. Although thick bands of fat may be undesirable, try to pick a steak with thin specks and strands of fat in between the muscle tissue. At cooking time, these small bits of fat will melt (in a process called marbling) and make the meat juicier. 9. Leaner steak cuts possess more flavour but will be a little tougher if cooked past medium. 10. Don’t leave the meat out in room temperature for longer than one hour. This will make bacteria grow at an exponential rate, plus it will make the meat less fresh. If you need to RM 34

18. Marinades tenderize meat (and addition to giving them some wild flavouring). If it all possible, marinade overnight; but if you can’t, try to give at least an hour of the meat soaking in the marinade sauce. 19. Don’t add any salt until the meat is cooked to prevent it from getting dry and tough, as the salt will draw away moisture. 20. Tired of the same-old BBQ sauce? Test out some new sauces you might have never thought of using, such as teriyaki, hot sauce, chipotle, Caribbean “jerk”-style sauce, and others. Add a little bourbon, rum, beer, or wine to your standby sauce. Mix in some honey, brown sugar, or paprika. Put in lemon juice, chopped onions, red peppers or chile peppers to perk things up.

5. If you’re a charcoal fan, first line the inside bottom of your cooker with a couple of sheets of aluminium foil before you put your briquettes in. This will give you a quicker and easier clean-up of the gray coals and ash once you’re done barbecuing. The only downside to this is that the opening holes in the bottom of your cooker will get covered up. So when you first light your fire, make sure it gets plenty of oxygen to stay lit longer, thereby giving you hotter and longer-lasting coals. 6. If using a smoker, minimize the amount of times you open it. I know you’re anxious to see how the meat is doing, but opening it frequently will keep the smoker below the necessary heat levels. The old adage says, “if you’re looking, it ain’t cooking”.

line charcoals on the bottom of one side of the grill. Then, place some hickory or mesquite wood chips on top of the hot coals for extra flavouring. Place your meat on the side of the grill away from the coals (indirect heat), and keep the lid closed as much as possible. This will increase cooking times quite a bit, but it will be worth it. In fact, this added smokey taste may be so good you may even decide to forgo the barbecue sauce next time you do this.

13. Quick and easy way to grill large vegetables such as potatoes and ears of corn: coat heavily in butter, sprinkle on some seasoned salt, wrap securely in aluminium foil, and throw it on the grill. 14. To reduce the amount of browning or blackening of meat, only apply barbecue or other tomato-based sauces containing sugars during the last 10 or so minutes of grilling. 15. Lots of people like steaks rare, but don’t do the same for your hamburger. More bacteria is present in ground beef, so cook until it’s well done and no pink is in the middle. If in doubt, grab a meat thermometer and make sure the temperature reaches no less than 160 degrees in the burger’s centre. 16. Don’t reply solely on BBQ sauce to flavour your meat. Experiment with different types of marinades, seasonings and rubs to give your food unique and delicious tastes. 17. Got a regular grill that cooks hot and fast but want a little smoke flavouring? First, only

21. Use these cooking times for grilled fish: Salmon fillets, 6 – 8 minutes per side; Salmon or halibut steaks, 5 minutes per side; Trout fillets, 4 minutes per side; Small whole fish, 7 minutes per side; and Large fish, 15 minutes per side. If your whole fish are stuffed, give it a few extra minutes per side. Use these general cooking times for grilled chicken: Breasts and wings, 15 – 20 minutes; Thighs and legs, 30 minutes; Chicken halves, 40 – 45 minutes; Whole chicken, 75 – 90 minutes. On individual chicken pieces, apply sauce and turn every 5 minutes. Whole birds, grill breastside down and turn over after 45 minutes. Half birds, cook skin-side down for 5 minutes and then flip over and grill for remaining amount of time. If you’re in doubt as to whether or not the chicken is done, the centre of the meat should read 170 to 175 degrees on your meat thermometer. 22. Keep your grill grate clean with a stiff wire brush or a piece of crumpled-up foil (with a subsequent wipe with a dry paper towel). When it’s time for cooking, grab the grate with an oven mitt and clean it after the grill heats up after started your fire and also after you’re done grilling. Dip a folded paper towel in oil and apply to the bars of the grate. This is to ensure your meat won’t stick to the grill AND you’ll get awesome-looking grill marks.

NEED MORE SPACE? WHAT ABOUT A NEW POD! There’s a new alternative for any one looking to expand their home. Have you considered a pod?

L

ooking for more space in your home but don’t want the cost or hassle of an extension? many homeowners around the country have found one answer might be a ‘Pod’ - a bespoke designed timber garden room with all the home comforts but at much less cost than bricks and mortar. Whether you are looking to add an office, a gym, home cinema or whatever you choose, a pod might be just the thing, as David Harper of Executive Pods explained: ‘They are as comfortable as any room in the house, with choice of under floor heating, mains power and water even air conditioning if you choose. Also, being far more lightweight than a conventional extension, they can be sited on almost any kind of

ground with just a concrete base and no need to dig out for foundations, so there’s much less disruption too.’ The benefits don’t end there. With a stylish cedar-clad exterior, they look as good alongside any size, age or style of house, will last for years and years with no timber treatment whatsoever, they can be designed free-standing or attached to your house and the inevitable matter of planning permission is much easier than with a conventional extension.

other finishing touches as required. All they need to do is tell us what they want, then leave it up to us to turn it into reality, within just a few weeks for start. ‘Lots of people of people are getting the message ‘don’t move - improve’ nowadays but most don’t want to put up with all the disruption and red tape, not to mention the cost, of a bricks and mortar extension. A pod is not only a simpler solution but is usually quite a bit more affordable too.’

‘Pods usually need no planning consent at all but at Executive Pods we will take care of all that,’ said David, who has 30 years experience no only in joinery but also project and site management. ‘We will carry out the surveying and measurement, then design every pod bespoke to each customers needs. That means every pod id built from scratch on site, not from prefabricated modular units as some others might. Bormida, an idyllic village in Liguria with a quickly dwindling number of 394 residents, is hoping the incentive will help attract newcomers. Otherwise, depopulation could threaten the town’s very existence.

The details are not confirmed, but a local councilor stated, “Anyone is welcome to come and live here.” In addition to the upfront cash, Mayor Daniele Galliano is

promising to have small property rentals available for as little as €50 (about £45). There’s not much to do in Bormida, admittedly. There are four restaurants, a single church, and delicious Ligurian cuisine. Davide Papalini said “Life is so simple and natural,” Oddone Giuseppe, the manager of one of the aforementioned restaurants told The Guardian. “It’s a healthy lifestyle, and the air is very clean.” Liguria is also home to the famous, cinematic destination of Cinque Terre, and is just over an hour’s drive along the coast to the city of Genoa. Idyllic in the most Italian Alpine way, Bormida had only 390 residents when Mayor Daniele Galliano took office in 2014, as Il Secolo XIX notes. Since then, 54 residents have either passed away or moved to other places, with only four births to counteract the losses. To combat that downsizing, Galliano began renting out municipal houses for $50 a month for small homes, and up to $130 for larger homes to attract people to move to his small town. And the move worked. Now Bormida has 394 residents, despite having only one main street and four restaurants.

WANT YOU Kaitangata, New Zealand Kaitangata, in South Island, offers attractively priced house and land packages in hope of tempting citydwellers to relocate The town of Kaitangata on New Zealand’s South Island. The town of Kaitangata on New Zealand’s South Island has a cunning plan to attract new residents. Photograph: A tiny New Zealand town has a unique problem – too many jobs, too many affordable houses and not enough people to fill them. So the 800 residents of picturesque Kaitangata, in the South Island, have launched a recruitment drive to lure new residents to the town. Avocado shortage fuels crime wave in New Zealand The scheme involves offering house and land packages in the rural community for an attractive NZ$230,000 (£122,000) in the hope that Kiwis struggling with life in big cities will be tempted to relocate. Bryan Cadogan, there mayor of

the Clutha district, which includes Kaitangata, estimates there are upwards of 1,000 jobs vacant in his district and local residents are unable to meet demand. He said: “When I was unemployed

and had a family to feed, the Clutha gave me a chance, and now we want to offer that opportunity to other Kiwi families who might be struggling. “We have got youth unemployment down to two. Not 2% – just two unemployed young people.” The major employers in the Clutha district are linked to primary industries – including a dairy processing plant and freezing works – and for many years they have been forced to bus in workers from the provincial hub of Dunedin, which is over an hour away. “I despair over the way many Kiwi families are forced to live these days,” said Cadogan, who is a born and bred local.

All About Burnley The name Burnley is believed to have been derived from Brun Lea, meaning "meadow by the River Brun". Various other spellings have been used: Bronley (1241), Brunley (1251) and commonly Brumleye (1294). Burnley is a market town in Lancashire, England, with a population of 73,021. It is 21 miles (34 km) north of Manchester and 20 miles (32 km) east of Preston, at the confluence of the River Calder and River Brun. The town is partially surrounded by countryside to the south and east, with the smaller towns of Padiham and Nelson to the west and north respectively. It has a reputation as a regional centre of excellence for the manufacturing and aerospace industries. The town began to develop in the early medieval period as a number of farming hamlets surrounded by manor houses and royal forests, and has held a market for more than 700 years. During the Industrial Revolution it became one of Lancashire's most prominent mill towns; at its peak it was one of the world's largest

RM 54

producers of cotton cloth, and a major centre of engineering. For the first time in more than fifty years, a direct train service now operates between the town's Manchester Road railway station and Manchester's Victoria station, via the newly restored Todmorden Curve, which opened in May 2015.

The town lies in a natural threeforked valley at the confluence of the River Brun and the River Calder, surrounded by open fields, with wild moorland at higher altitudes. To the west of Burnley lie the towns of Padiham, Accrington and Blackburn, with Nelson and Colne to the north. The centre of the town stands at approximately 387 feet (118 m) above sea level and 30 miles (48 km) east of the Irish Sea coast.

We felt really at home and excited for the evening ahead. We were guided to our lovely corner table , were Maria, our friendly waitress for the evening,

Perfectly presented four delicious starters to arrived, CHAMPIGNON ALL'AGLIO (Garlic Mushrooms in a white wine garlic sauce), FISHCAKES ALLA CHARLIE (Tune and Salmon fishcakes with garlic sauce), KING PRAWN NETTUNO (Tiger prawns, flamed in white wine, garlic, chopped tomatoes, chilli and herbs), We all agreed that the starters were amazing. After the amazing starters we could not wait for the main meal.

We browsed the specials board but decided to order from the main menu, which had plenty to choose from, once again our exceptionally presented main courses arrived. LINGUINA CASSIOPEA (King Prawns with Garlic, Chilli, Tomatoes, white wine and fresh herbs). PRIME FILLET STEAK (served with a choice of Mexican sauce, peppercorn sauce, diane sauce with gorgonzola and parma ham) KING PRAWN TAORMINA (King prawns with onions, garlic, white wine and brandy in a creamy lobster sauce, served with rice), We could not fault any of these dishes, as all were a combination

of quality, tasty delicious foods, accompanied by a side dish of amazing vegetables.. We were really too full for dessert- but managed. Once again our desserts arrived , all equally as good as the starters and main courses. We left this amazing restaurant knowing we would return again.

SUMMER TIPS FOR: TAKING CARE OF YOUR BODY

REVIEW MAGAZINE

W

hat does summer mean for you: spending more time outdoors; going abroad; building a golden tan? But is all that more important than healthy skin? Along with shorts, shades, bronzed skin and beach hair, summer brings with it the risk of sun damage – from dry patches and burns, to age spots and wrinkles. You can of course still enjoy the perks of those summer rays, and maintain healthy looking skin for longer, as long as you follow these tips, prepare in advance and take care. 1. PREPARE AND EXFOLIATE Youthful looking skin depends on the preparation as well as the maintenance. As much as you need to stay protected when exposed to sun, you also need to prepare in advance. Before going on holiday or spending long periods of time outside, exfoliate your entire body using a gentle salt and oil scrub for nourished and supple results. This will remove all the dead skin, giving you a brighter appearance and preparing you for an even and deeper tan. 2. APPLY PLENTY OF SUN CREAM You need to protect your skin from harmful UV rays that cause fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. Remember, high SPF alone isn’t enough anymore.Wearing a sun cream with a high sun factor that protects against both UVA and UVB rays is guaranteed to protect you from premature ageing – as long as you apply it 20 minutes before exposure and re-apply every couple of hours or as needed. Quite often, the lotions that offer the most protection can feel thick and heavy when on the skin. If you don’t like wearing these heavy creams, which can often get more uncomfortable the warmer it gets, look for a lighter alternative. 3. COVER UP We know that sun and small clothes come hand in hand ; but always keep suitable cover ups within reach.Kaftans, shirts and maxi dresses are lightweight enough to carry around and won’t make you uncomfortably hot when worn. Also, sunglasses and hats prevent the sun from directly hitting your face, which will help you avoid fine lines and wrinkles and keep you looking rejuvenated and fresh. 4. MOISTURISE, MOISTURISE, MOISTURISE Even when you’ve exfoliated, worn sun cream and covered up, you are still exposing yourself to UV rays which, in turn, will cause some level of damage. The most common type of damage is dry skin, which can easily be treated with a quality moisturiser, such as ESPA’s Essential Body Moisturiser. As well as combatting dry areas and giving your body a much needed surge of moisture, it will cool down and soothe sunburn and sensitive patches. 5. HYDRATE Just because you’re not thirsty does not mean you’re not dehydrated!Dehydration causes dry, dull looking skin and increases the chances of wrinkles and spots. On a regular day, you should be looking to consume around 8 glasses of water, with this number increasing as your time spent in the sun rises. As well as hydrating you, drinking plenty of water will give you a healthy glow and gorgeous complexion.

Use these 10 summer footcare tips from the College of Podiatry to get your feet in shape for summer. 1. TRIM YOUR TOENAILS FOR SUMMER Use proper nail clippers and cut straight across – not too short, and not down at the corners, as this can lead to ingrown nails. File them, if that’s easier. 2. GO BAREFOOT Go barefoot or wear open-toed sandals whenever you can in the hot weather (except when you’re in a communal shower or changing area) to help stop your feet getting sweaty and smelly. 3. FORGET FLIP-FLOPS Don’t be tempted to wear flip-flops or flimsy sandals all through the summer. They don’t provide support for your feet and can give you arch and heel pain if you wear them for too long. 4. CHANGE SOCKS DAILY If you have to wear socks in hot weather, change them once a day and choose ones that contain at least 70% cotton or wool to keep your feet dry and stop them smelling. 5. REMOVE HARD HEEL SKIN Hard, cracked skin around the heels is very common in summer, often caused by open-backed sandals and flip-flops rubbing around the edge of the heel. Use a foot file, emery board or pumice stone to gently rub away the hard skin, then apply a rich moisturising cream to soften the skin. 6. BANISH BLISTERS Blisters strike more often in hot weather. They’re caused by rubbing, especially between the toes if you’re wearing flip-flops with "thongs". Prevent summer blisters by stretching out sandals. Wear them with socks and walk around indoors to loosen them up, or use foot balm to protect your skin from chaffing. If you do get a blister, don’t pop it. Cover it in a plaster and if it bursts, apply some antiseptic. 7. TAKE A BREAK FROM NAIL POLISH Nails need to breathe from time to time, so have a break from nail polish about once a month for a few days to a week. This can help prevent discoloration, particularly if you like to use dark-coloured nail polishes. RM 57

Historical Aspects There are a number of English Heritage properties here. Crawshaw Hall is a Grade II* listed mansion built in 1831 by John Brooks, a well-known local calico printer and quarry owner. His son Sir Thomas Brooks was created a baronet in 1891 and the following year raised to the peerage as Baron Crawshaw. Sir Thomas was appointed High Sheriff of Lancashire for 1884-85. The property descended in the Brooks family until it was sold in 1976. It has been a medical centre and nursing home since 1987. SUMMER DRIVING TIPS It seems that with many people concerned about employment prospects and the on-going depressed economy, even more of us will be turning to British holidays this summer and hoping that our UK weather will be sunny and hot. However, hot weather and British road travel are by no means a partnership made in heaven, and as many motorists are now running slightly older cars than previously, it’s more important than ever to take steps to ensure you don’t start your holiday sitting sizzling on the side of the road! Plus hot cars, hot kids and summer traffic queues will all try the patience of a saint, so a bit of thoughtful preparation and careful planning will ensure you arrive at your British holiday destination in good time and shape! Generally Always prepare your car before leaving on a long journey. Check: tyres / brakes / windscreen wash / lights / oil / water levels prior to setting off. If towing a caravan, ensure you carry out suitable checks for its road worthiness too. Keep an eye on your petrol levels, especially if driving in the countryside and you are unsure where the next filling station will be. Try to never let the gauge fall below one quarter. Make sure you have adequate car breakdown cover that will get you to your destination with

minimal disruption in the unfortunate event of a breakdown – and make sure you have your emergency call out number with you. Plan your journey so you know where you are going, taking a map or GPRS system with you plus telephone number for your destination in case you do get lost or break down. Allow extra time to get to your destination if travelling at peak times. Better still try and avoid Friday evenings when everyone else will be on the road! Travelling with children: Check that car seats are fitted properly and that straps are adjusted to fit the child comfortably. Ensure your children are dressed suitably in clothing that can adapt to changing British weather. Lots of thin layers and loose fitting clothing will ensure maximum comfort and avoid over heating in warm weather. Ensure you make regular stops – at least fifteen minutes every two hours – for the loo and some fresh air. Make sure you have healthy snacks and plenty of water on board to keep everyone hydrated. Avoid chocolate and sugary, sticky sweeties and fizzy drinks at all cost. If stopping for a meal, try to avoid eating greasy foods and over-filling tummies – meals should be plain and simple, and on the small side to help avoid travel sickness. Best still, pack a

homemade picnic for the journey. You’ll save money and you’ll avoid any arguments about what to eat! Take some chilled damp flannels in a sealed container – you’ll be surprised how often your kids will want to wash their faces on a warm day to cool down! Prepare yourself with game ideas such as I-SPY, Car number and letter games to keep them entertained during the journey. Stories and music on personal MP3 players are a great idea and avoids disagreements about what to listen to!Never leave children shut in a hot car – not even for just a few minutes. In case of Breakdown Breaking down on the side of the road can be extremely hazardous. Safe practice in a breakdown situation can literally mean the difference between life and death and drivers should carefully consider the situation and the safety of their passengers and themselves before attempting to leave the car. Of particular note, don’t forget to tell the breakdown company that you have children on board. Also, if it’s warm and you wish to leave the car, exit with extreme caution on the side of the car away from the traffic. Find somewhere to sit that is a good distance away from the road and fumes and where you can keep an eye out for help to arrive.

GAS OR DIESEL? What is the difference between a gasoline engine and a diesel engine? In a diesel engine, there is no spark plug. Instead, diesel fuel is injected into the cylinder, and the heat and pressure of the compression stroke cause the fuel to ignite. Diesel fuel has a higher energy density than gasoline, so a diesel engine gets better mileage. What is the difference between a two-stroke and a four-stroke engine? Most chain saws and boat motors use two-stroke engines. A twostroke engine has no moving valves, and the spark plug fires each time the piston hits the top of its cycle. A hole in the lower part of the cylinder wall lets in gas and air. As the piston moves up it is compressed, the spark plug ignites combustion, and exhaust exits through another hole in the cylinder. You have to mix oil into the gas in a two-stroke engine because the holes in the cylinder wall prevent the use of rings to seal the combustion chamber. Generally, a two-stroke engine produces a lot of power for its size because there are twice as many combustion cycles occurring per rotation. However, a two-stroke engine uses more gasoline and burns lots of oil, so it is far more polluting. Are there any advantages to steam engines and

RM 62

other external combustion engines? The main advantage of a steam engine is that you can use anything that burns as the fuel. For example, a steam engine can use coal, newspaper or wood for the fuel, while an internal combustion engine needs pure, highquality liquid or gaseous fuel.. Are there any other cycles besides the Otto cycle used in car engines? The two-stroke engine cycle is different, as is the diesel cycle described above. The engine in the Mazda Millenia uses a modification of the Otto cycle called the Miller cycle. Gas turbine engines use the Brayton cycle. Wankel rotary engines use the Otto cycle, but they do it in a very different way than four-stroke piston engines. Why have eight cylinders in an engine? Why not have one big cylinder of the same displacement of the eight cylinders instead? There are a couple of reasons why a big 4.0-litre engine has eight half-liter cylinders rather than one big 4-liter cylinder. The main reason is smoothness. A V-8 engine is much smoother because it has eight evenly spaced explosions instead of one big explosion. Another reason is starting torque. When you start a V-8 engine, you are only driving two cylinders (1 litre) through their compression

AGING WITH HUMOUR

THE RIGHT PLACE A mother and a baby camel were lying around under a tree. Then the baby camel asked, “Why do camels have humps?” The mother camel considered this and said, “We are desert animals so we have the humps to store water so we can survive with very little water.” The baby camel thought for a moment then said, “Ok…why are our legs long and our feet rounded?” The mama replied, “They are meant for walking in the desert.” The baby paused. After a beat, the camel asked, “Why are our eyelashes long? Sometimes they get in my way.” The mama responded, “Those long thick eyelashes protect your eyes from the desert sand when it blows in the wind. The baby thought and thought. Then he said, “I see. So the hump is to store water when we are in the desert, the legs are for walking through the desert and these eye lashes protect my eyes from the desert then why in the Zoo?” The Lesson: Skills and abilities are only useful if you are in the right place at the right time. Otherwise they go to waste.

WHEN I WAS YOUNG A FUNNY COMPUTER POEM A computer was something on TV From a science fiction show of note A window was something you hated to clean And ram was the cousin of a goat. Meg was the name of my girlfriend And gig was a job for the nights Now they all mean different things And that really mega bytes. An application was for employment A program was a TV show A cursor used profanity A keyboard was a piano. Memory was something that you lost with age A CD was a bank account And if you had a 3-inch Floppy You hoped nobody found out. Compress was something you did to the garbage Not something you did to a file And if you unzipped anything in public You'd be in jail for a while. Log on was adding wood to the fire Hard drive was a long trip on the road A mouse pad was where a mouse lived And a backup happened to your commode. Cut you did with a pocket knife Paste you did with glue A web was a spider's home And a virus was the flu.

I've sure gotten old! I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license. .................................. I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over. .................................. An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests. First, she wanted to be cremated, and second, she wanted her ashes scattered over Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart?" the preacher exclaimed. "Why WalMart?" Then I'll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week." .................................. My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, "For fast relief." .................................. Remember:You don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing. THE SENILITY PRAYER: Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference. .................................. I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to feed it. .................................. I had amnesia once -- or maybe twice. ..................................
