BOOT ON THE WRONG FOOT This tale is based on a true story. [Tessa] who is a nursery schoolteacher in Burnley names have been changed to protect the guilty. Marlon asked the teacher to help him get his shoes on at the end of a busy day. After quite a struggle with the shoes, which were a little tight, Tessa inally got them on. 'They're on the wrong way round, Miss,' mumbled Marlon. She realises that he is right; they are on the wrong feet. Staying calm she swaps them over for him. 'They're not my shoes, Miss,' Marlon murmurs again. Tessa ights hard to keep her cool and asks Marlon why he hadn't told her before. She then kneels down again and helps him pull the shoes off. 'These aren't my shoes, they're my brother's and Mum told me not to tell anyone.'

MEMORY TEST Three elderly men, Eddie, Jenkin and Martin men go to the doctor's for their memory test. It's a miracle they remembered the appointment! Anyway, the doctor begins by asking Eddie, "What is ive times ive?" "191," is his reply. The doctor rolls his eyes and looks up at the ceiling, and says to Jenkin, "It's your turn. What is ive times ive?" "Wednesday," replies Jenkin man. The doctor shakes his head sadly, then asks the third man, "Okay Martin it's your turn. What's ive times ive?" "Twenty ive," says Martin. "That's great!" says the doctor. "How did you get your answer?" "Easy," says Martin, "just subtract 191 from Wednesday."

At this point Tessa can feel tears coming. She helps him back into his shoes. She gets him into his coat and wraps his scarf round his neck. where are your gloves, Marlon?' asks Tessa quietly. 'Oh, Miss, I always put them in my shoes!'

THE SILLY, HILARIOUS & FUNNY SIDE OF DIY Rosie Hall buys a self-assembly, lat-pack, cupboard from her local Homebase store. Reaching home Rosie reads the instructions carefully, counts the pieces then assembles the cupboard in the bedroom. It looks really great and she is delighted. Now, Rosie lives near a railway line and as the train passes by the cupboard collapses. Undaunted by this misfortune she re-reads the instructions and reassembles the cupboard. Once more, another train passes and the whole cupboard collapses again. Rosie now frustrated and thinking that she must have done something "wrong" re-re-reads the instructions and re-re-assembles the cupboard. Shortly, a train passes and the whole cupboard collapses yet again for the 3rd time. Rosie is now fed up, cross and rather angry so she 'phones the customer service department. She is told that this is quite impossible and that they'll send along a itter to take a look. The itter arrives and assembles the cupboard. Again, a train passes and the cupboard collapses. Completely bafled by this unexpected event, the itter decides to reassemble the cupboard and sit inside it to see whether he can ind out what causes the cupboard to collapse. At this point, Rosie's husband comes home, sees the cupboard and says, 'Oh, that's a splendid looking cupboard,' and he opens it to look inside. The itter, who had been wondering how to explain his position in Rosie's bedroom cupboard, blurts out, 'You probably won't believe me, but I'm standing here waiting for a train.'

I went to the doctors He said 'What appears to be the problem?' I said 'I keep having the same dream, night after night, beautiful girls rushing towards me and I keep pushing them away'. He said 'How can I help?'. I said 'Break my arms!' RM 8

GARDENING TIPS GENERAL TASKS AND GARDEN MAINTENANCE The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year?

• If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose!

WATERING

• If it stays warm and dry, water saving strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily.

• Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine. • Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year.

• Keep your pond topped up, free of pond weed and clean - green algae can be toxic to pets. WEEDING • Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task

if left to spiral out of control. • Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth.

BOOK REVIEW Dear Amy

HELEN CALLAGHAN Margot Lewis is a classics teacher in a Cambridge school. She's also the agony aunt for the local newspaper, dealing with problems from the loneliness of a recent widower to a teenager wondering if she might be pregnant. The disappearance of local girl Katie Browne, a former student, is weighing on her mind when she receives a letter in childish handwriting from a Bethan Avery, begging for help: "I've been kidnapped and am being held prisoner by a strange man. I'm afraid he'll kill me." But Bethan vanished decades earlier, and the police brush away Margot's worries. Author Helen Callaghan, a former bookseller, intersperses scenes of Katie being held in a cellar by a violent man with Margot's attempts to get to the bottom of the letters she is receiving in this compulsive, intelligent thriller which I gulped down in a few nights. A dark and intriguing debut.

HAIL TO KALE! Botanical name: Borecole Thriving even in frost, kale is an easy-to-grow green that keeps on giving

Cut the smaller, paler green leaves to anchor or mix into fresh garden salad; use the larger, dark greens for stir-fries, pizza topping, or soup, while the plant keeps right on growing. One variety is known as dinosaur kale in Tuscan regions for its glossy, crinkly, green-to-violet-colored leaves. Kale has a relatively short life in terms of crispness, so it’s best to use within a few days of harvesting.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF KALE: If vitamins could be packaged and labeled as such, they would look very much like kale. That’s because the vitamins offered by just one cup of this relatively little-known veggie can trump a whole week’s worth of other foods: 684% of the daily value of vitamin K, 206% of the suggested daily amount of vitamin A, and 134% of vitamin C (and even more vitamin C in the Scottish curly-leaf variety). Kale can legitimately be called a superfood, if only after one particular study, which reported the high antioxidant activity

in this vegetable. The phytonutrient indole-3-carbinol aids in DNA cell repair, while at the same time slowing the growth of cancer cells. With its sulforaphane content, kale protects against prostate and colon cancers. It also has properties that studies show ca ease lung congestion, and is beneicial to your stomach, liver, and immune system. It contains lutein and zeaxanthin, which help protect your eyes from macular degeneration. Kale has been compared to beef, which is known as a “go-to food for iron, protein, and calcium. Kale’s anti-inlammatory capabilities are unrivaled among leafy greens, especially relating to the prevention and even reversal of arthritis, heart disease, and several autoimmune diseases. Omega-fatty acids are called essential because your body needs them to remain healthy, but they need to come from sources outside the body; kale is an excellent source of these healthy fats. Beneits of these often-talked about but little understood compounds include their ability to help regulate blood clotting, build cell membranes in your brain, and protect you against heart disease and stroke. They may also help combat autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

RAMMY BRING IN NELSON DEFENDER THOMPSON Ramsbottom United's rebuild continued with the addition of central defender Luke Thompson from Nelson. Thompson, 25 a combative, strong defender with experience from Padiham, Colne and Nelson makes the step up to Evo-Stik football and joint manager Paul Fildes thinks the Rams could have unearthed a gem. He said "Luke is raw talent. He's a defender who loves to defend which is something of a rarity nowadays. He's a leader, strong and powerful and can chip in with goals as well. We're keen to have a real hard work mentality at the club and Luke its the bill." With the Rams deep into their preseasons the coming weeks are likely to be littered with information on additions as well as information on retained players from the 2015/2016 squad. The Ostrich Story A man walked into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him. The waitress asked them for their orders. The man said, "A hamburger, fries and a coke." She turned to the ostrich. "What's yours?" she asked the ostrich. "I'll have the same," said the ostrich. A short time later the waitress returned with the order. "That will be ÂŁ9.40, please." And the man reached into his pocket and pulled out the exact change for payment. The next day, the man and the ostrich came again and the man said, "A hamburger, fries and a coke." The ostrich said, "I'll have the same." Again the man reached into his pocket and paid with exact change. This becomes routine until the two entered again. "The usual?" asked the waitress. "No, this is Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked potato and a salad," said the man. "Same," said the ostrich. Shortly the waitress brought the order and said, "That will be ÂŁ32.62." Once again the man pulled the exact change out of his pocket and placed it on the table. The waitress could not hold back her curiosity any longer. "Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?" "Well," said the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the attic and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My irst wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be there." "That's brilliant!" said the waitress. "Most people would ask for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!" "That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there," said the man. The waitress asked, "What's with the ostrich?" The man sighed, paused and answered, "My second wish was for a tall chick with long legs who agrees with everything I say." RM 33

Wedding Special Congratulations you are getting married ! I

n all of the excitement and stress of planning your own wedding over the upcoming months, one of the most crucial things you will buy is your wedding dress. And, the irst thing you had better do before really heading to the bridal shop is getting the idea about which style of your wedding dress you love. The irst tip on how to choose a wedding dress is to igure out how much you want and can spend on a wedding dress, and tell the sale person before she begins bringing out the gowns. By that way, you will not lose your heart when seeing a dress that you could not afford. The next tip on how to choose a wedding dress is to start early, from 6 to 9 months before your wedding, if possible. In fact, it might take a few months for a producer to make a dress and another 2 months to accomplish the alterations. Those extremely elaborate gowns might take longer. If you do not have enough time, then there are many shops rushing the orders for an extra fee, yet your choices might be limited. Also, they have a section of sale with some samples you could buy off the rack. You

could get the wedding dress that needs just minor alterations, if you are lucky. Before arriving to the bridal shop, you should not pore over some bridal magazines, websites, and books to get to know about silhouettes, fabrics, and the lexicon, helping you understand what you look for. In everyday life, people do not see terms like basque waist and Watteau train often, so if you do your research beforehand, then you will be more conident when choosing and considering a wedding dress. Create folder with photos of dresses or details that appeal to you, and then take that folder with you when shopping. Wedding gowns are made in some different silhouettes. Before choosing anything else, you had better know which kind of gown is going to latter your igure the best. Look at the pictures of each kind. You could browse wedding website message boards as well as member proiles for pictures of real women wearing wedding gowns, instead of relying on the professional pictures of models wearing them. Picture yourself on the wedding day. What are you wearing and what silhouette is your dress? What fabric? Is it beaded or embroidered? What color is it? Really, with many choices for the wedding gown it

could be overwhelming to look through hundreds or thousands of them. Many brides have reported that after looking at too many racks and racks of dresses, they start to look the same. Hence, before setting out to try gowns on, you should picture your wedding day and how your gown looks like and list down some things describing the gown of your daydreams. However, it is not necessary for you to know about terminology of wedding dress, just simply jot down the simple description of the dress you are picturing. Remember that, before putting down the deposit (often 50%), you should go over the contract with the bridal consultant. Then, check when the wedding dress will be ready, the fee for alterations, if the gown could be shipped out of the country or state, the cancellation policy, and the recourse you can have if the gown is damaged or comes without your requested medications. Eventually, you had better check once again that the name of producer, the style number, the size, and the color are exact. After considering some basics on how to choose a wedding dress style, you need to decide where you would like to go and call stores in advance to ind out which designers they carry, the range of price of cont...

Ideally, you should shop on a weekday yet not during your lunch hour when you might be rushed. However, you should also not shop until you drop, just limit yourself to 2 stores per day, so you will not get exhausted or overload about what you have seen. Remember to take a notebook with you to note down the dress When choosing a wedding dress, you should take anything you want to wear like a special necklace or the veil of your grandmother. Boutiques will usually supply bustiers, shoes, and strapless bras, yet you might want to bring your own. Additionally, you will need the consultation and advice from a few trusted conidantes, yet not too many as they might let your feel confused and frustrated. Just invite one or two people really understand your taste and are going to be honest with you. Before your wedding, you do not necessarily to spend a fortune to achieve the perfect wedding dress. In addition to containing sale racks, a lot of salons also give large sales several times per year in order to clear out those discontinued or “gently worn” samples (often in the sizes 6, 8 and 10). In order to check out when this event happens, you call stores and go to the designers’ website, and simply log in for the mailing lists. Additionally, you can register for the trunk shows, in which designers will debut new lines. Occasionally, boutiques offer discounts when customers purchase on the show day. Keep your mind open This is the mantra that those bridal consultants repeat over and over again. So, you should not overlook their advice, even if what they consult you to try on are not your style. Meet with florist If you ind one that is reputable and available you should book them. Hopefully, you've looked through bridal books and loral design sites to get ideas on how you'd like your lowers to look. Ideally, you printed pictures and stored them in your bridal book. Not all flowers are available year round You may discover you are paying almost double for a lower that is out of season and dificult to come by but could be replaced with a similar lower with more availability. Ask your florist what ideas they may have to make the cost more affordable. Consider simple designs of one lower or a few simple lowers tied with a lovely ribbon. It keeps cost down! Don't forget that lowers are usually dead by the next day. Can't ind a lorist? Don't panic! You'll just need to rethink and compromise. Call all of the lorists back and ask about renting the potted plants, having them do the corsages and boutonnieres for you to pick up everything the day before. Have them use hardy lowers! Have them prepare simple but hardy lowers wrapped in ribbon for the bouquets (again, picked up by you the day before and stored in water). The lorist still does a lot of the work but you'll need to pick it up the day before, put everything out and maybe

PDF Compressor Pro REVIEW MAGAZINE even take the rental plants back to the lorist. Meet with a few different photographers Most photographers are busy and have limited schedules. But if you start early, your date is more likely to be available. Remember that an experienced professional wedding photographer would produce quality images, whatever the weather or regardless of any unforeseen circumstances. Ask to see all their pictures from a complete wedding, not just the 'best of' from several weddings The perception is that digital costs less so the overhead will be minimal. Photographers will tell you the capital investment in professional equipment is far higher, and the time spent editing the photographs is far more intensive than the days of ilm. Weigh the cost with the quality, ask questions and use someone you can communicate with easily. You might want to save money by making an arrangement with the photographer and getting a CD of your pictures, and then having the actual photos printed yourself at a local photo shop. Remember that the photographer owns the copyright (by law, whoever clicks the shutter owns it), so ensure that any reproduction of images is permitted in writing by the photographer.

Add disposable cameras to reception tables. Leave a note telling guests to take photos and leave the cameras. Remind them the cameras are not toys for their kids. Contact local bakeries or wedding cake specialist to pick out and order your cake.Tell them how many people will be attending. Let them know if your wedding will be inside or out so they can advise you of what ingredients will stand up under the weather. No one wants to see a melted cake.

CARE FOR THE ELDERLY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF OUR LIVES IS CARING FOR ELDERLY PARENTS Children have a responsibility to look after those wonderful individuals who gave them the gift of life. However, there are many aspects of caring for elderly parents that can be stressful for both parents and their children who care for them. To help make things as stress-free as possible, here are six tips to help you care for your elderly parents more easily:

• Start Talking About It Early To help make things as easy as possible, children should always start discussing their elders’ care as early as possible. Make sure to have this discussion while parents are still healthy and have an idea of what they expect out of life as a senior. Once parents have become seriously ill, these discussions can become much more dificult and troubling.

• Don’t Do It Alone As with anything in life, caring for an elderly parent is much easier when you have help. If you have siblings, make sure that they share a portion of the burden. If they live locally, make sure this help includes the gift of time spent with your parents. If you need help, consider in home care so that your loved ones get the care they need while still being independent. This also gives you more opportunities to spend quality time with them instead of simply taking care of their everyday needs.

• Make a Financial Plan One of the reasons to discuss the care of your parents with them while they are still healthy is so that you can develop a inancial plan for this situation. Whether parents need at home assistance or need the care of a retirement home, you need to know how these things will be paid for. They may already have separate funds set aside for the extra care they need, but it’s important to have this discussion before it becomes a inancial burden.

• Cut Costs It is a smart idea to cut costs wherever possible. One of the best ways to save money is to buy medical devices through reputable online vendors. Look into medical supply shops to save a bundle by getting exactly what you need so you don’t have to pay extra for items you won’t use. Be sure to stick to the planned budget and ind ways to reduce costs.

your parents either. This is especially true if their minds or bodies are betraying them. Treating them with respect in every situation is the best way to make things easier on them. Caring for a loved one can be both challenging and rewarding. Following these six tips will help to make the experience as easy as possible on both of you. In spite of all our communication technology, with mobile phones, e-mail and video chats, researchers have found that people today are more lonely than they have ever been. One group which is particularly at risk for loneliness is the elderly. Seniors who live alone may feel isolated so many reasons. Their kids have forgot to visit, they can’t get out of the house because of various illnesses, and some may even have dificulties understanding the whole aging process; all this can lead to depression.

• Manage Your Stress It can be one of the most stressful things in life to see someone you love struggle to do simple tasks in front of your eyes. You need to make sure you have a healthy life with plenty of exercise, rest and healthy eating to keep your stress levels managed while you are caring for your parents.

• Respect Them Remember that this situation is no picnic for

CARE FOR THE ELDERLY FACTS ABOUT SENIORS AND LONELINESS: It’s not just people living alone but the whole idea of getting old and not being able to do all the things you once enjoyed. • Loneliness can be self-perpetuating When an older adult feels lonely, they are more likely to behave in ways that cause other people to avoid being around them. A study done by the University of Chicago found that these lonely individuals often tend to push others away, make little effort to engage with people, and isolate themselves even further.

• Lonely people decline and die sooner Seniors who are lonely tend to decline faster both mentally and physically than those who are more social, with the lonely people having a 59 percent higher risk of decline. They also have a 45 percent greater risk for death. Rather than feel depressed on a daily basis and have regrets, seniors should engage in different social activities to make them feel better. A book club, playing cards, meeting with friends is all excellent ways of forgetting about loneliness.

• Nursing homes can be lonely places Even if they are surrounded by people in an assisted living

RM 46

PDF Compressor Pro REVIEW MAGAZINE facility or nursing home, seniors can feel disoriented, out of touch, and alone, which is why they may need neurological care. If they are relying on home health care services, there is generally no real connection between the caregiver and the patient. The elderly end up feeling like they have been shunted to the side, with nobody left who truly cares about them.

How can you help a lonely loved one? At some point in life, we will be compelled to become caregivers for our parents. It shouldn’t be seen as the most terrifying and time consuming job in the world, because at the end of the day, we owe so much to our loved. Here are some tips to help you reduce your elderly parents loneliness: • Listen and appreciate – Feeling that someone cares about what they say can help to alleviate a feeling of being alone and unappreciated. When you visit your loved one, take the time to ask questions, and really listen to their answers. Ask them to tell you more, and encourage them to talk about the things they are or were interested in. They probably don’t get this opportunity for deeper communication often enough. • Help them avoid seclusion – Sometimes people ind their lives, abilities, and interests shrinking, until they end up living in seclusion. Try to ind ways to get them back in touch with other people. This can sometimes be done through discovering the interests they used to have.

CARE FOR THE ELDERLY HOLIDAYS Holidays for the elderly are very important for a number of reasons: 1) They give elderly people something to look forward to 2) They provide a stimulating change of scene 3) The give elderly people something pleasant and memorable to think about when they get home. Let's look at each of these in more detail: 1) They give elderly people something to look forward to An elderly person's daily routine can get tedious, especially if the person concerned has an active mind and has been an active person throughout their life. Having a holiday to look forward to is a great way of giving the person something to look forward to and to plan for. For example, they can research into the holiday destination and ind out what there is to do and if going abroad, they can ind out more about the geography and culture of their destination. There's also lots of other types of planning involved such as what clothes to take, what books to take and if going abroad, what currency to take. 2) They provide a stimulating change of scene A change of scenery is a great stimulant for anyone going on holiday, but especially so for elderly people where quite often, they rarely go beyond their own four walls. The mental stimulation a holiday for senior citizen provides often results in a noticeable alertness that has not been seen for a long time. 3) They give elderly people something pleasant and memorable to think about when they get home. Another advantage of a holiday is that it gives the elderly person something pleasant to think about for a while after their return, resulting in an improved mood and outlook on life.

Holidays suitable for the elderly Finding a suitable holiday for an elderly person can be quite a challenge. It depends on how active and mobile the person is. For example, if a person has dificulty walking, the holiday destination needs to be lat and the accommodation needs to be within easy reach of holiday attractions such as bars, restaurants and shops. If the elderly person is in a wheelchair, even more care has to be taken over selecting a holiday destination as it needs to be equipped with lifts and ramps to allow easy wheelchair access. Factors to consider when choosing a holiday for seniors: 1) You need to consider how much the elderly person can afford. Unfortunately, many elderly people will not be able to afford an expensive holiday, so the cost of a holiday needs to be carefully researched, taking into account the accommodation, food, travel and excursions. 2) You need to consider how active the elderly person is and how much help they will need on holiday. If the senior is not vey active, they will need an active friend or relative to go on holiday with them. If there is a risk of the elderly person falling over or falling out of bed, then you really need to make sure that the elderly person has someone to share a room with. 3) How are far should an elderly person travel? Well the answer to this question is a far as they feel comfortable. You also need to consider the method of travel - whether air, sea or by coach/car. Sometimes elderly people have conditions that prohibit them from travelling by air or mean that they are unable

to sit for a long time in a coach or car. In these cases, holiday destinations closer to home should be considered. Holidays for seniors to consider There are a number of holiday types that may be suitable for elderly people. Cruises for the elderly - cruises can be ideal holidays for seniors, especially if you live near a port. Most cruise ships are fully equipped for the elderly with lifts and ramps to assist people who have dificulty walking. However, you need to research the facilities carefully before booking. Tour operators who specialise in holidays for the elderly - Saga for example. Saga provide holidays for the over 50s and many of their guests are well into their seventies, eighties or even nineties. However, before booking to need to make sure that the holiday destination is suitable, especially if the elderly person has mobility problems. Short breaks for the elderly - suitable for those who are unable to cope with a week or more from home or who are on low budgets. Coach tours for the elderly - ideal if the senior is able to sit in a coach for a few hours. Many coach tour operators run coach tours especially aimed at the elderly and the coaches have lifts to assist those with mobility problems getting on board. The accommodation is usually elderly person friendly too with ramps and lifts to assist with mobility problems.

CLASSIC CARS FORD CAPRI MK I (1969–1974) The irst Ford Capri was introduced in January 1969 at the Brussels Motor Show, with sales starting the following month. The intention was to reproduce in Europe the success Ford had had with the North American Ford Mustang; to produce a European pony car. It was mechanically based on the Cortina and built in Europe at the Dagenham and Halewood plants in the United Kingdom, the Genk plant in Belgium, and the Saarlouis and Cologneplants in Germany. The car was named Colt during its development stage, but Ford was unable to use the name, as it was trademarked by Mitsubishi. Although a fastback coupÊ, Ford wanted the Capri Mk I to be affordable for a broad spectrum of potential buyers. To help achieve that, it was available with a variety of engines. The British and German factories produced different line-ups.The continental model used the Ford Taunus V4 engine in 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 L engine displacements, while the British versions were powered by the Ford Kent straight-four in 1.3 and 1.6 L form. The Ford Essex V4 engine 2.0 L (British built) and Cologne V6 2.0 L (German built) served as initial range-toppers.At the end of the

RM 54

year, new sports versions were added: the 2300 GT in Germany, using a double-barrel carburettor with 125 PS (92 kW), and in September 1969 the 3000 GT in the UK, with the Essex V6, capable of 138 hp (103 kW). Under the new body, the running gear was very similar to the 1966 Cortina. The rear suspension employed a live axle supported on leaf springs with short radius rods. MacPherson struts were featured at the front in combination with rack and pinion steering which employed a steering column that would collapse in response to a collision. The initial reception of the car was broadly favourable. In the June 1970 edition of the Monthly Driver's Gazette, tester Archie Vicar wrote of the gearchange that it was "...in Ford fashion easy to operate but not very jolly". In the same review Vicar summed up the car as follows: "Perhaps with a bit of work it can be given road-holding and performance less like an American car and more like a European one".

CLASSIC CARS FORD CAPRI MKIII (1978 - 1987) Based on the Capri MkII loorpan, the MkIII model was identiied by its smart fourheadlamp coniguration, restyled bonnet and bigger, ridged rear lights.A more elegant design than that which went before it, the Capri MkIII was initially offered in L (1.3 and 1.6), GL (1.6 and 2.0), S (1.6, 2.0 and 3.0) or Ghia (2.0 and 3.0).The Capri L was something of a duffer. being powered either by a 57bhp 1.2-litre overhead valve engine or a wheezy 72bhp single choke 1.6-litre mill. The rest of the range were far more fun, the 1.6-litre engine being an uprated 91bhp twin choke version whilst the 2.0-litre was good for 101bhp and the torquey 3.0-litre generated an unstressed 138bhp.The S was the trim level of choice, as it included lairy sill decals, checkerboard Carla fabric trim and the all-important rubber spoiler. The Ghia was the luxury model, boasting everything the suburban lounge lizard could aspire to including a mono radio cassette player and a dual tone horn. 1981 was a pivotal year for the Capri. Minority interest models such as the LS and the Calypso and Cameo special editions were launched, but it was the Capri 2.8i that was the big news. With lowered suspension featuring Bilstein

dampers, uprated springs and thick anti roll bars the 2.8i meant business.A 160bhp engine provided all the tail-out action you could handle and it became an instant classic, regularly thrashing far more prestigious far in comparison tests. In February 1984 the quite astonishingly bespoilered Tickford Turbo Capri hove into view. Resembling Moby Dick after being coated in Bostik and dragged through your local branch of Ripspeed this 205bhp monster was best described as 'of its era'. Nevertheless a sprint to 60mph of just 6.5 seconds would keep most contemporary sports coupes honest.
