Everything from different annual events I want to keep an eye out for, projects that will be getting big updates in the coming years and general stories that piqued my interest made the list. Some of those story ideas are even follow-ups to coverage in this issue, such as future work on the Copeland, how staff housing on the resort might impact Revelstoke’s rental market and more.

For another year, this town has kept me on my toes and never lacking for things to write. I don’t see that trend dying down anytime soon.

In our first issue of 2026, my thanks go to Brad Harrison and Charlotte Smith for contributing. Brad’s conditions report answers some snow questions even this green snowboarder has about avalanche risk in the coming months, and Charlotte took one of my story questions that didn’t quite pan out last issue, compiling tips for gardening over the winter. I know a couple of us are using plants to keep that winter slump from hitting too hard, so I’m grateful for this article.

Here’s to 2026, and all the stories this town will tell over the year. I’m eager to report on as many as I can.

REFLECTING ON A YEAR OF GROWTH, AND RECOMMITTING TO COMMUNITY-DRIVEN JOURNALISM IN REVELSTOKE.

By Hollie Ferguson Hello all and welcome again to a new volume of the Revelstoke Mountaineer. Last year marked a number of firsts for our small team and I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on what we accomplished before diving into what’s to come.

First, I would be remiss to not raise my hands to reporter Lys Morton, who for the second year in a row was nominated for Employee of the Year for the Revelstoke Business Excellence Awards. This nomination meant so much to us as a team because it saw Lys recognized as the absolute superstar he is on a larger scale than just around the office, where he does in fact go above and beyond.

That drive can be seen in his work, where he shows up every single day to answer Revelstoke’s questions, uncover its history and uplift its voices. One example of this secured him a spot as a finalist for Best Sports Coverage in the Canadian Online Publishing Awards for his story Yorke Parkin headed to Italy for Special Olympics World Winter Games.

This is a huge accomplishment and Lys is up there with reporters from some heavy hitters in national news including CBC, The Narwhal, The Walrus and The Investigative Journalism Foundation. To say I’m proud of the work he’s done to honour local stories and share unique perspectives would be an understatement, so I’ll share a quote from a reader who said what’s true: “Lys is the Mountaineer. They grew him in a lab and everything for this role.”

Next, I should acknowledge that out of this hard work and collaboration with recurring contributor Charlotte Smith, we were able to produce some of our largest issues to date. With 36 pages in our Home Issue and 40 pages in our Winter Issue, we pushed the envelope on what we thought was possible last year. I’ll remind readers of our team’s size - it’s tiny, with five core members in total. Vital support staff and contributors bolster us to make our work possible, but for the most part our ship is small. This is why I’m happily praising the work we did last year to grow, all with our readers at the very heart of our efforts.

In our spread toward the back of the issue, we share just five examples of the stories we did in 2025 we feel exemplify the spirit of Revelstoke. These also happen to be five of our top read stories of the year. Revisiting them really shows the key things folks in Revy value; celebrating local people, creating spaces for recreation and reconciliation and supporting neighbours when they need it the most. Each of these stories is a reflection of those things closest to the heart of everyone in town.

Now to look ahead. Since my very first editor’s note I’ve reiterated the Mountaineer is authentic to Revelstoke and written for everyone. This hasn’t changed, and in the new year we will continue to experiment and collaborate to make our community-driven journalism reflective of our readers. On our never-ending list of story ideas we have everything from sewage lagoon updates to deep dives into health care, development and community organizations, each one a reader suggestion.

Telling these stories in the new year will take focus, dedication and support. We hear from so many folks that our magazine gives a platform to Revelstoke different from any other news source, and we want to keep that up.

The bylaw passed first reading and council sent the bylaw back to staff for edits including Coun. Aaron Orlando’s request to include skateboards in regulations around what could be ridden on the highway and bike lanes. Council also gave the bylaw offence notice a first and second reading so staff could edit it with any changes following future readings of the traffic and highway bylaw.

2026 budget plan gets a 5.75 per cent property tax boost

Traffic and highways bylaw gets major update Revelstoke’s traffic and highways bylaw was up for first, second and third reading with a range of updates added in. The previous traffic and highways bylaw has been in place since 1992 with only one minor amendment in that time related to snow removal.

“As you can imagine, a bylaw from 1992 is fairly out of date,” Kenny Gipps, manager of development services said, explaining staff focus was to bring the bylaw up to current standards and ease future enforcement.

Updates include expanding the definition of cycle to add motor assisted cycles in an effort to better regulate the growing supply of e-bikes used in and around Revelstoke, along with bringing definitions and regulations in line with updated provincial legislations and the city’s focus on diversified transportation in Revelstoke and increased environmental focus.

Coun. Austin Luciow noted the updated bylaw prohibits cycles ridden along sidewalks, parks, pathways and boulevards and wondered if including e-bikes in the cycle definition would restrict e-bikes ridden in any of Revelstoke’s parks, increasing future enforcement needs. Gipps explained that Bylaw works on a complaint basis for those situations and the focus would be on safe riding

within parks “If somebody is riding erratically in one of our parks, then obviously it does create a safety concern. That is something we would then address,” he said.

Gibbs said his team would take an educational approach in enforcing the updated traffic bylaws for a while before fully enforcing ticketed offences. Still, he doesn’t expect any major upsets for residents safely interacting with traffic rules already.

That evolution of electric vehicles in the bylaws and how future regulation could play out past cycles and mobility aids had Luciow and Coun. Tim Palmer wondering if further definitions and clarifications were needed. The city’s legal team had vetted the bylaw and given approval, and any changes in definitions such as removing e-bikes from the definition of cycle could require another legal assessment Gibbs explained.

He added staff have already been exploring golf cart and small electric vehicle regulations in other communities and how that could look in Revelstoke.

“It does pose some safety challenges, but it’s not completely off the books,” he said, adding staff could look further into the matter and develop future bylaws and assess community interest.

Using community feedback following an online survey and budget information sessions, council moved that city staff work to finalize the Five Year Financial Plan with a 5.75 per cent increase in property taxes for 2026. It would mean a roughly $130 increase to the 2026 property taxes based on the average residential property.

The 5.75 per cent increase includes a 4.75 per cent increase to keep the city operating all resources such as sewage and road maintenance at the current level. The one per cent additional increase would help save for the upcoming multiplex development.

“I am still very keen on saving for the future multiplex,” Coun. Lee Devlin said to the motion, noting community frustration on how long the project has been taking to move out of the planning stage. With expected building and material costs rising, Devlin stressed the city’s current savings for the multipurpose facility don’t meet what the potential budget would require.

“The more we save now, the less it comes down to the taxpayers later,” he said.

While 368 responses are needed to give a statistical representative of Revelstoke’s population, the online survey only received 121 responses, with a majority agreeing to the base increase of 4.75 per cent and a one per cent increase for additional saving.

Council voted unanimously for staff to work with a 5.75 per cent property tax increase for the 2026 budget and Five Year Financial plan.

Resort shuttle partnership gets one more year of approval City of Revelstoke’s resort shuttle partnership with Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Revelstoke Connection Ltd., operating together as Everything Revelstoke, was approved for another year.

Tourism Revelstoke was unable to secure funding from the Resort Accommodation Association for the shuttle and has not been included in the partnership this time around.

With staff housing now open at the resort, the shuttle schedule has been adjusted to reflect that expected need but no additional funding was provided as the costs had already been budgeted for.

Council reviews Revelstoke Cycling Association funding request In response to a letter from Revelstoke Cycling Association requesting multi-year funding from the Resort Municipality Infrastructure and Economic Opportunity Funds, Mayor Gary Sulz said he wouldn’t support the organization receiving multi-year funding through that funding stream.

“We have lots of other things that are coming forward that we’re going to need that funding for,” Sulz said, adding the local biking association receives grant funding from the ReDi Grant program and other sources every year for ongoing trail maintenance.

Still, some members of council understood the desire for longer term sustainable funding.

“It’s a similar complaint we have with the province on annual funding mechanisms,” Palmer said, empathizing with the resources needed for RCA to submit year after year.

COPELAND HOTEL ADDITION GETS COUNCIL GREEN LIGHT HERITAGE AND DEVELOPMENT PERMITS APPROVED FOLLOWING REDEVELOPMENT OF HOTEL PLANS.

By Lys Morton Plans to rehabilitate the home of Revelstoke’s first mayor and build an attached hotel and restaurant was back in front of council Tuesday, Dec. 9 with alterations to the proposed development to align with Revelstoke’s Heritage Conservation Area guidelines while still meeting business needs.

Historically known as the McCarty House and currently operating as The Copeland bed and breakfast, the house is a prominent historical building at the edge of Revelstoke’s downtown, included in the Heritage Conservation Area.

The plans for a hotel addition, street level restaurant and auxiliary building were brought to council Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2024 where councillors struggled with how to meet historical design expectations while not restricting a development the property has been zoned for since the 1980s. After lengthy debate, council deferred the project to a Committee of the Whole meeting where development requests were made for the Copeland to meet before the permit could be approved.

Paul Simon, director of development services presented the updated plans to council noting how the developer had been actively working with staff to try and make new plans match with the design in one of Revelstoke’s key historical neighbourhoods.

“Trying to get that pitched roof on there while making it a project that is ultimately viable from a hotel and restaurant perspective did become quite a challenge,” Simon said.

“I certainly wondered, after we essentially rejected the plans, whether it just wasn’t a viable development in the heritage components,” Coun. Tim Palmer said. “But the developers have come through with a reasonable approach to that.”

Reduction of rooms from 23 to 22, a slight increase in the restaurant footprint

from 93 square metres to 150 square metres, two gable roofs pitched at a 45 degree angle to match the existing pitch of the McCarty House replacing the originally planned flat roof were all key to the new proposal. The originally planned addition at the back of the property has now been scrapped to help with increased parking on the lot, with the hotel providing the required 11 as opposed to the originally planned seven and using parking supplied by the Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi.

The main hotel addition has been pushed forward to line up with the McCarty House and will use cement lap siding instead of brick exterior. The cement siding is a common feature found throughout Revelstoke’s heritage conservation zone. Staff originally advised the developers to set the hotel addition farther back on the property to keep the McCarty House more center focus.

“The overall changes are still intended to allow the addition to be constructed with more modern materials and building techniques but ensuring that the overall design reinforces the McCarty House as the focal point for this property,” Simon said.

Another key focus for the hotel addition will be rehabilitation work done to the entire McCarty House, including work on the porch, exterior materials and replacing a previously removed turret.

Council voted in favour of the heritage alteration permit with Coun. Aaron Orlando opposed, and council voted in favour for the development permit.

The original proposal for the Copeland hotel and restaurant update had residents frustrated with a lack of matching the historical characteristics of the neighbourhood.

WINTER STORMS BRING A STRING OF HIGHWAY CLOSURES

HERE’S HOW TO PREPARE FOR AVALANCHE ROAD CLOSURES AND KEEP UP-TO-DATE ON ROAD CONDITIONS WHILE TRAVELING.

By Lys Morton Winter in British Columbia’s interior means avalanche closures throughout the highway system, especially along the Trans Canada Highway while navigating through Rogers Pass where snow storms, weak snow layers and strong winds can bring avalanches down onto the highway.

Avalanche technicians throughout the region monitor for changing conditions that could prompt highway closures so avalanches can safely be triggered. The season often starts in November and can run through May, but the peak of the season runs from December to March.

“Patrols are going through that corridor regularly to make sure that the most up-to-date information is posted on DriveBC,” Janelle Staite, Ministry of Transportation deputy director said at a press conference covering the Fraser Valley flooding and other road hazards impacting B.C. in December.

She encouraged anyone traveling through B.C.’s mountains to frequently check DriveBC for the latest in road closures and conditions.

Drivers can be stuck behind avalanche closure gates for hours and anyone traveling through the region is encouraged to prepare for long waits on the highway. From topped-up gas tanks to accessible food and water, blankets and winter clothing in case vehicles need to be turned off and other emergency supplies, the Shift Into Winter campaign has lists and tips to keep your vehicle prepared.

“It’s really making sure that if you’re heading out on the road and on that corridor and expecting winter conditions that your vehicle is equipped and ready,” Staite said.

Avalanche Canada monitors avalanche threats and conditions throughout Canada and can be paired with DriveBC for road condition expectations and potential closures.

Stuck behind the snow Whether it’s for a controlled closure or an unexpected avalanche, drivers stuck behind an avalanche closure are encouraged to safely turn around and head to the nearest town or rest stop and monitor road conditions from there.

If heading back isn’t possible, stay in your vehicle with the seatbelt on.

“It is easier to find a car in the snow than it is to find a person,” the government shared on its avalanche traveling page.

No matter if you’re driving with winter tires, mud and snow tires or even studded tires driving through the avalanche debris is highly discouraged.

Vehicles stuck in the snow can hinder highway clearing and further avalanche activity could bring more debris onto the road.

REVELSTOKE MOUNTAIN RESORT SHOWS OFF STAFF HOUSING TO THE PUBLIC ‘THIS IS A POINT OF PRIDE FOR US, THAT WE CAN PROVIDE QUALITY HOUSING FOR OUR STAFF,’ JASON KELDER, RESORT PRESIDENT SAYS.

By Lys Morton A major goal for Revelstoke Mountain Resort can now be checked off, with staff settling into the first phase of staff housing.

The development has long been in the works with ground breaking on the project in 2022. With 92 units available and over 200 occupants moved in, the build pulls a sizable chunk of the resort’s staff out of Revelstoke’s rental market.

“This is a point of pride for us, that we can provide quality housing for our staff instead of relying on the town’s market,” Jason Kelder, resort president said at a Nov. 26 information session.

The new build welcomed folks during an open house Friday, Dec. 5 while staff suited up for the upcoming opening day. Apartment layouts, along with gear storage, laundry facilities and a future fitness room were all on display.

Peter Nielsen, vice president of operations and Revelstoke Mountain Resort general manager said he is excited to see what keeping staff close to the resort does for guest experiences and resort culture.

“Folks who live full-time in that area really help animate the whole experience there,” he said, explaining that keeping staff connected to the resort outside of working hours helps increase guest experiences.

Axel Mellon, Sutton Place laundry attendant and new staff housing occupant doesn’t see himself entirely detaching from Revelstoke though, even if more amenities become available at the resort such as meal and entertainment options.

“Actual experiences, date nights, movies, the town still has it all,” he said, adding while it might take some planning on staff to commute to downtown

and other neighbourhoods, many choose to work at the resort because of the community in town.

“Revelstoke’s a town that’s worth the effort,” Mellon said.

Staff housing for the resort has been a mix of in-town leases, long-term use of The Cube, a hostel-style accommodation and other properties acquired by the resort. With the latest build now open, the resort no longer rents any units in town, Kelder explained, adding it still owns one home in town. Some staff still rent or own independently as well, preferring options outside of the staff housing.

“We have staff, they’re members of the community. They’re well established in Revelstoke and want to build a home here,” Kelder said.

Having an option for staff housing and the details in the units provided showcases a level of care the resort has for its staff according to Jaimie Curtis, Sutton Place housekeeper.

“Staff experience isn’t necessarily at the top of the list for what to invest in for big resorts. It feels really cool here that we feel like we are being valued, and our experience is just as ingrained as the rest of the mountain,” he said.

For an employer that often attracts staff new to the city, the province and even Canada, Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s staff housing will also be a key resource in helping newcomers settle in and connect, Sutton Place housekeeper Georgina Moir said speaking from her own experience.

“Moving into staff accommodations is always great if you’re coming alone in terms of meeting some great people. I found some really lovely friends through living in staff accommodations.”

By Lys Morton Revelstoke Mountain Resort welcomed guests on opening day Saturday, Dec. 6, with throngs of riders lined up at the base. Local radio station Stoke FM was on-site to keep the mood up as overnight campers and last-minute line-ups chatted about this season.

From riding switch foot on Locals Days to learning every lift operator’s name, everyone has a different goal for the season, with one that seems to be universal no matter who you talk to.

“Just get as many laps in as possible, enjoy as much of the season as possible,” Trevor Noel said, in line for two hours along with friends.

After taking a season off for medical reasons, Marc Taylor was just happy to be back on the mountain. Feeling good after a day of laps, he has hopes for the coming holidays and various opportunities to get out with his family.

“The goal is always to enjoy powder days,” he said.

His daughter Lily Taylor has her sights set on new terrain, particularly Low Dive, a drop feature found in the North Bowl.

“I don’t know if I’ll do it this year, but it’s in the back of my mind,” she said.

The resort’s Mountain Hosts were out in full force, directing guests on where to pick up pre-purchased tickets, where to find a warm drink and what the nightlife hot spots in Revelstoke are.

“It’s one guest, one experience,” Dom Hubaczek, volunteer Mountain Host said, explaining his goal is to showcase Revelstoke hospitality to anyone who visits.

Fresh snow fell for the majority of opening day, a welcome sight for a resort with its lower half of the mountain still closed due to treacherous terrain.

By Lys Morton Crowds stuck around to welcome the Barenaked Ladies and the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Holiday Train to Revelstoke even after a delay of nearly two hours. From the Revelstoke Fire Department cooking up hot dogs and Tim Hortons providing warm drinks to the Revelstoke Community Band playing a range of holiday music to keep spirits up, the extended delay couldn’t quite dampen the mood.

“It’s a phenomenal event. You have all different ages out here enjoying the time,” Norma Craft told Revelstoke Mountaineer. A long-time attendee of the Holiday Train, she said Revelstoke’s support of the food bank shows up every year.

“Even the years where it’s been bitter cold,” Craft said. “This year it’s raining and snowing at the same time on us. Everyone still wants to be here and enjoy.”

“Operational constraint presented by the cold conditions,” kept the Holiday Train from making it to Revelstoke on time, Terry Cunha, CPKC spokesman told Revelstoke Mountaineer. But weather wasn’t going to keep longtime Barenaked Ladies fans away, even as the delay stretched on.

“I’ve been a fan of Barenaked Ladies since I was 10 years old. I have the best memories of their music, and now our kids are big fans. They can quote songs and they’re just so stoked for today,” Lara Davis said.

It wasn’t just the promise of live music, Parks Canada showcasing the avalanche control equipment and other organizations helping pass the time that kept Davis and her family happily waiting. Big crowds meant a high chance of running into friends and connections from around town.

“You get to see so much of the community. Everyone’s out just to have a good time,” Davis said.

A season of support The CPKC Holiday Train annually travels through Canada and the United States of America with cars decked out in lights and live performances at each stop. CPKC representatives present a cheque to the local food banks for each

stop, providing a welcome boost of support going into the holiday season.

This year CCRS received $10,000 from CPKC, nearly $900 in hot dog donations, more than $1,700 in cash donations and over 500 pounds in food donations.

“It was great to see everyone in good spirits despite the train being late and the rain coming down,” Jenna Thomsen, food and outreach co-ordinator said.

“What a great yearly event for the community!”

The Holiday Train lines up with CCRS’ Holiday Campaign to support locals in need throughout the winter. From the Angel Tree program, connecting donors with youth and senior holiday wishlists to the society’s photo booth at the Big Eddy Winter Market, bringing in over $1,000 in donations to the Holiday Giving Thermometer, with $61,000 raised towards the food bank’s $200,000 goal, Revelstoke has been showing up.

“However you choose to give, your support truly matters. Thank you for helping keep our community cared for and connected,” CCRS wrote on socials.

LOCAL NEWS Early season conditions couldn’t keep riders away from Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s first Locals Day of the season.

CROWDS HIT THE RUNS FOR FIRST LOCALS DAY OF THE SEASON OVER $7,500 RAISED FOR REVELSTOKE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION THROUGH DISCOUNTED REVELSTOKE MOUNTAIN RESORT LIFT TICKETS.

By Lys Morton Crowds from Revelstoke, Nakusp and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District hit the runs at Revelstoke Mountain Resort Sunday, Dec. 14 for the first Locals Day of the season. The iniative offers $20 tickets and $10 standard rentals along with other discounts for those who can prove residency within Nakusp and the CSRD. “It essentially doubles my season,” Will Pennington-Little said, often buying a five-day vertical card to use in tandem with the four Locals Days offered each year.

While early-season conditions persisted and all terrain below Revelation Lodge remained closed for the first Locals Day, Pennington-Little wasn’t let down.

“The terrain is still a little choppy in some sections, but for early season, it was a great day.”

Rebecca Millens wasn’t going to let early-season conditions keep her and friends from commuting from Salmon Arm to get a few laps in. While a couple of detours kept her from getting first chair, Millens was just happy for a day of snowboarding.

“This is the closest hill for us, so it’s nice to be included in the Locals Day specials,” she said.

For JP Lord, Mackenzie Outpost manager, Locals Day means big crowds and high energy.

"Locals Day is always historically one of the busiest days of the year," he said, explaining the affordability of lift tickets and rentals is a key draw for families and those with tighter budgets to come try out the resort.

"It's a really good opportunity for people who don't often get the skiing experience to get a few days under their belts," he added.

Lord also encouraged locals to take advantage of the rental discounts, try out a new sport on the mountain or even explore some of the higher quality gear available.

"It's a great way to get an affordable switch day, try something else and try a different kind of riding," he said.

This is advice Pennington-Little is keeping in mind this season, already planning to try some snowboarding gear and lessons at a future Locals Day. “It wouldn’t be an option if everything was regular price. So, I want to try that out,” he said.

Future Locals Days are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 18, Sunday, March 22 and Friday, April 3. Fifty per cent of ticket proceeds go to Revelstoke Community Foundation for every Locals Day, with over $7,500 raised Sunday, Dec. 14.

By Lys Morton Editor’s Note: Our team has heard from various community members all the ways Revelstoke punches above its weight class. From non-profits and businesses to events, there are examples everywhere.

We’re putting a spotlight on these humble brags and giving them a chance to highlight others who are making big things happen in a small town.

Big Eddy Glass Works owner and head glass blower Leah Allison never had second thoughts about making Big Eddy home for herself and her business. Previously working in Invermere, and with dreams of maybe living in Berlin, there was a particular charm found in Revelstoke’s southwest neighbourhood that captivated Allison.

“It’s just got such good vibes and potential. So many old locals love what's going on here. They’re appreciating the businesses that are starting up in this town and in this neighbourhood, particularly,” Allison said.

On a hunt for commercial space where she could create a glass blowing studio, Allison and her partner Rob approached property owners throughout the Big Eddy before finding their current lot now home to their business.

“We were like so many others in this town, really just trying to find that commercial space. People still knock on my door asking us what our plans are for this property,” she said, adding that businesses such as Holm Coffee continue to highlight the neighbourhood's potential.

Oddly shaped property lines, less an issue and more a staple feature of the neighbourhood, nudged Allison to take the leap and purchase the adjoining property. Formerly home to Big Eddy Diesel, Jackalope Bikes and Metalworks Forge now operate

on this property. A focus on artistry and respectful neighbours was key in Allison bringing the two businesses into the neighbourhood.

“I want to be a good neighbour because there’s a lot of folks that have lived here forever. I didn’t want to just roll in with a new business and be loud and take up space,” she said, stressing the community has shown up to support Big Eddy Glass Works, other neighbourhood businesses and even Allison herself since she moved. Cultivating good business neighbours in whatever way she can is one way Allison wants to give that same care back to the Big Eddy.

“I can’t imagine living anywhere else in Revelstoke,” she said.

As plans start to form for Big Eddy Glass Works to move to another building on the property and as Allison eyes up future tenants, art remains a focus for her. Similar to other industries in town, rental space for studios and artists is in short supply.

Allison hopes she can provide those spaces in the near future and help others fall in love with the Big Eddy.

“People told me when we first moved in here, ‘no one’s going to come to the Big Eddy, no one’s going to be able to find you.’ But that’s just not been true.

The neighbourhood and so much of Revelstoke shows up for us.”

Big Eddy Winter Market A staple way Allison is bringing the celebration to the neighbourhood is with the annual Big Eddy Winter Market, which ran for its sixth year Friday, Dec. 12. Pulling inspiration from Berlin street markets and adding a Revelstoke flair or two, the outdoor market welcomed vendors from all over the region to showcase artwork, handcrafted items, drinks, foods and more.

“It’s a lot of work, it takes a lot of helping hands. But it’s my most favorite thing we do here,” Allison said.

All ages came down to watch live glass-blowing demonstrations, enjoy the sights and music and explore what vendors were offering.

Similar to previous years, a free shuttle service was available to bring guests down to Big Eddy Glass Works from around Revelstoke. The shuttle has been a key feature in keeping the market accessible and the neighbourhood safe with alcoholic beverages being sold.

Nearly 2,000 guests attended the 2025 Big Eddy Winter Market, a number that showed Allison how much the town appreciated the festive event.

“Revelstoke showed up once again,” she said.

“We need entertainment” Allison is quick to sing her praise for other Big Eddy staples like First Light Farms, Holm Coffee and the beloved Big Eddy Market gas and grocery store.

But a particular business found on the other side of the Big Eddy bridge is what comes to mind when she’s asked who in Revelstoke is making big moves for the community.

With an updated screen and projection bulbs changed on the regular, featuring everything from local ski films to international blockbusters, The Roxy Theatre is a valued resource in Revelstoke, Allison said. All those efforts are led by Greg Rose, Roxy owner and operator since 2020. Rose and his team have earned praise for keeping The Roxy updated, affordable for locals and providing employment for teens in Revelstoke.

Keeping a theatre operational in a small, mountain town that often prioritizes outdoor recreation is no easy feat, Allison said. But Rose’s passion for The Roxy and for Revelstoke is evident the moment you step through the theatre doors. It’s a level of passion Allison hopes the town never takes for granted.

“We need entertainment,” she said. “We need to hang out with our friends and go get some popcorn.”

Even with a mix of rain, slush and snow, Revelstoke turned up for the Big Eddy Winter Market.

KEEPING YOUR INDOOR GARDEN THRIVING THIS WINTER HOW TO KEEP YOUR PLANTS ALIVE AND HAPPY ALL YEAR LONG.

By Charlotte Smith In the winter months, tending to indoor plants can be a game-changer for our mental health and a refreshing alternative to winter sports. But with short days and cold temperatures, how do we keep our indoor spaces bright and alive?

The Mountaineer spoke with Erica Robinson, plant enthusiast and owner of Big Plant Energy – a passion project turned business, offering in-house plant care services in Revelstoke.

“If someone has an issue with a plant they already have, I’ll go in and do some investigative work and sort out whatever issues are going on,” she said.

Winter plant care, she explained, is totally different from that during the warmer months.

Robinson shared several key tips to help indoor gardeners keep their plants healthy and flourishing throughout the winter season.

Light, light, light It’s no surprise that light is the biggest challenge for indoor plants during winter, especially in Revelstoke, where daylight can drop to just eight hours.

“It’s just really not enough for most plants,” Robinson said. “If you want to have a successful

indoor plant situation, getting additional grow lights is key.”

Supplementing natural daylight with even simple, inexpensive grow lights can make a noticeable difference. For as little as ten dollars, you can buy small grow lights that stake directly into pots.

“I’ve seen the plants that have these lights do so much better compared to their neighbours - it’s really clear.”

Don’t over-water When plants tend to go dormant in the winter, it’s common to want to overcompensate.

“What happens a lot of the time is that because there’s no light, people keep watering plants unnecessarily,” Robinson said. “They end up doing quite badly due to the combination of too much water and not enough light.”

Maintaining healthy but not excessive watering levels is essential for winter plant health.

Protect plants from the elements Cold air can also be damaging to plants, and Robinson stressed that the location of plants in the home can make all the difference.

“Moving your plants away from next to an open door, particularly if there’s a cold draft or they’re a tropical plant, is a really good idea,” she said.

Choose the right plants Robinson generally advises against buying new plants in the wintertime, as the stress of moving and adjusting can be harder on them this time of year.

However, some varieties are better suited to handling harsh winter conditions than others. Her recommendations include pothos, monstera and hoyas.

“I’ve seen a lot of success with really simple plants,” she explained. “I’ve noticed trailing plants seem to do really well, even with a little bit of neglect. They don’t need a bunch of sunlight for the winter, so as long as you don’t overwater them, they’re probably going to survive until the next season.”

She also suggested Christmas cacti. Not only do they bring colour into a space, but they are also easy to take care of since they don’t require much light, especially in winter when they go dormant.

With a few small adjustments, your indoor garden can thrive all winter long.

Yorke Parkin headed to Italy for Special Olympics World Winter Games Yorke Parkin’s road to the international games was a culmination of multiple wins at the Special Olympics BC Winter Games, three gold medal wins at the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Games in Calgary and countless hours on the mountain with coach Saige Beaumont.

“I ski four days a week,” Parkin told Revelstoke Mountaineer. At 16 years old and one of the youngest members of Team Canada, he’s still juggling the balance of school, training and all the other aspects of teenage life.

“It’s a lot of training and a lot of dedication,” he said.

That focus has pulled Parkin from being, “late to skiing for a Revelstoke kid,” as his mother, Bex ReidParkin said, to being one of the fastest alpine skiers on Special Olympics Team Canada. Within the span of four years since joining the Special Olympics circuit, Parkin headed for one of his biggest goals, competing in Italy’s Special Olympics World Winter Games in March.

Training for the Worlds Parkin’s training wasn't just about trying his hand at runs like Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s infamous black diamond run Kill the Banker, a task coach Saige Beaumont joked was, “working on your mental strength.”

Through Special Olympics Revelstoke’s programs such as club fit, Parkin has been able to tailor strength training, cardio and more to his specific needs with Noonan Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects various stages of development.

volunteer-run and supported through fundraising and community donations.

“If it wasn’t for them, he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do the things he has done,” ReidParkin said. She’s seen the same level of dedication to athletes through the Special Olympics BC and Special Olympics Canada programs as Parkin works through the ranks.

Keeping Revelstoke close in Italy There were two unique reminders of home close to Parkin’s chest during the games and celebrations.

A banner patch with “Gale Force” written on it and an upside down Revy. sticker are both inside Parkin’s Team Canada jacket as a way of bringing former sports buddy Devyn Gale and Revelstoke’s Special Olympics teammate Aleesha Kaler to the world stage with him.

Gale and Parkin grew up skiing and swimming together, their families remaining close over the years. Gale’s death while working as a wildland firefighter during B.C.’s 2023 wildfire season rocked Revelstoke and the BC Wildfire Service community.

Kaler participated on Revelstoke’s bocce, bowling and curling Special Olympics teams and was beloved by everyone connected to the organization.

Her passing in August 2024 is still felt by the community.

He hoped to give the memories of Gale and Kaler a moment in the spotlight alongside him.

While all of Revelstoke couldn't join him in Italy to cheer on his races, Parkin knows there was cheering from the hometown crowd.

A river boxed in: How the Box Canyon log jam came to be – and what can be done about it The Illecillewaet River’s current Box Canyon log jam is the upstream threat in the back of many people’s minds since the first logs snared up the river in 2014.

There’s a long history of jams at that point in the river, less than five kilometres upstream from where the Illecillewaet drains into the Columbia River, due to the narrowing of the rock face in Box Canyon. Growing over the course of a decade, the current blockage presents a number of problems for Revelstoke, from recreation to infrastructure concerns.

Steve Black, City of Revelstoke’s director of engineering and public works has kept his eye on the log jam since joining the city in late 2019. He’s familiar with the scope of the blockage and the ways different debris have shifted, sun bleached logs pushed back underwater by freshly washed up pieces.

But with provincial waterway regulations and a majority of the debris coming from federal Crown land, finding a solution isn’t entirely cut and dry.

The threat of a natural solution There is one force of nature helping things along even if in the slightest: rotting logs that finally break free from the back of the Box Canyon log jam and travel downstream.

“It gets thinner in the back, for sure. Similar to

some hairlines,” Black joked.

The rot and release of roughly 200 logs a day for the next three to four years with no major addition of debris upstream would be a natural best case scenario to clear the block. But that solution is dependent on many variables with no way to safely aid the release of rotting logs, along with the threat of river pressure eventually breaking through the remaining blockage.

The more probable natural solution to the Box Canyon log jam instead looks like a worst case scenario, with a major flooding event more likely in Revelstoke’s future than the slow and steady release.

Box Canyon log jam a hot potato of responsibility Black and city staff are exploring the option of manually clearing out the block piece-by-piece, yarding the freed logs to be picked up by businesses interested in the lumber or releasing the freed logs to float down into the Columbia River.

“It would be very expensive and very challenging,” Black said bluntly, explaining the location of the log jam within city limits gives other levels of government the opportunity to put the onus for a solution back on Revelstoke.

The B.C. Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship received a Section 11 application from the City of Revelstoke on June 17, 2025 requesting to start work in and around the Illecillewaet River.

Whether or not Revelstoke receives major provincial and federal support for the current blockage, multiple stakeholders will need to work together on a more permanent solution, Black explained.

“Keep connected with the city. Know that this is something we aren’t playing with. We are very focused on this.”

From gravel lot to growing ground, the Food Commons Project blooms in Revelstoke On a 2.5 acre piece of land off Powerhouse Road, hazelnut trees frame the site of the Food Commons Project, where roses, spirea and more are already helping steward Revelstoke’s latest food security project.

Lisa Moore, Michif woman and chair of the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke (IFSR) walks through the lot, previously used for demolition derbies and road gravel, painting a picture of what the future holds for this space.

Cultivating the Indigenous plants already located on the site, planning for a smokehouse alongside a greenhouse, mapping out a market garden beside accessible community garden beds, all of the plans showcase an intermingling of Indigenous agricultural practices and small-scale sustainable farming. That partnership of techniques has been the vision from the start, and that picture is becoming more clear thanks to a 10-year lease granted to the project.

A collaboration between IFSR and the Revelstoke Local Food Initiative, the project will not only give Revelstoke one more point of food security but it will also be a learning space to highlight the agricultural practices Indigenous nations throughout the region use.

“There’s reconciliation in that. Especially reconciling with the land and rebuilding that connection,” Moore said.

A return on community investment At just $10 a year, The 10-year lease on the plot is a community investment with expectations for returns. Neighbouring the Revelstoke Disc Golf course, the goal is for the Food Commons

to become a community hub for everyone in Revelstoke.

“It’s the kind of project that will evolve with the community and be in constant flux,” Teal Randle, Food Commons infrastructure coordinator told Revelstoke Mountaineer. “I believe that after the 10-year lease comes up, the benefit it provides to the community will carry it forward into the next phase.”

Moore and Randle are eager to see the space used by community members of all ages and throughout the year. Raised garden boxes will help with accessibility and the planned greenhouse will extend Revelstoke’s growing season, giving folks a chance to stay connected to the space even as winter settles in.

“It’s so exciting,” Moore mused. “We’ve been talking about this for so long.”

The road to Revelstoke’s pump track: ‘It’s been a long time coming’ Ground broke on Revelstoke’s anticipated pump track Monday, April 14 after over a decade of imagining, planning and partnering. The track officially became a goal for the city in the 2011 Parks Master Plan but budget, location and partnerships pushed the project back until it was finally reaffirmed as a goal for the city in 2022. In October 2024, international pump track developer Velosolutions was awarded the contract.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Alex Cooper, Revelstoke Cycling Association executive director told Revelstoke Mountaineer. Talks about a Revelstoke pump track have been on the radar since he moved to town in 2009 with Cooper himself writing updates for the Revelstoke Review about the proposed development.

“This project has been a long and winding journey with lots of back and forth,” Laurie Donato, director of Revelstoke Parks, Recreation & Culture told Revelstoke Mountaineer in a written statement. Now, with the help of Velosolutions’

expertise in pump tracks and other recreational bike infrastructure, the Revelstoke pump track is nearing reality.

Pumps tracks provide a consistent environment for riders focused on skill development before testing things out on more challenging trails. With an asphalt-looped track, riders have a continuous route with easier banks, hills and turns than what can be found on more advanced trails.

“You really get to focus on your bike handling abilities, and it’s in this central location, you don’t have to drive out to the trails. You can get to it very easily and have some fun,” Cooper said.

One particular local voice has been key to getting the project over the finish line, Cooper emphasized. Harrison Salisbury, RCA trail construction director and Skookum Bike and Ski manager has championed the project since joining the RCA board. Connecting with Revelstoke’s biking community, Salisbury made sure it was a resource the community would use and then worked with Donato and other community members to map out what was possible.

“His goal, his main priority, was to work to get a pump track built for this community,” Cooper said.

Once the city heard from the community about a want for a Revelstoke pump track, staff got to work sorting out how to make it happen.

“I have to give Laurie [Donato] a lot of credit for listening to the cycling community and community as a whole, making this project a priority, taking the lead on it and doing everything she could to get it built,” Cooper said.

Donato doesn’t have one particular group in mind that she’s most excited to see use the track once it opens.

“I’m just truly happy that this project has finally become a reality for the entire community,” she said, noting that working with Velosolutions has been a breeze and the company’s knowledge and resources for the project have been vital in keeping things on track.

“They’ve been highly professional, accommodating and detail-oriented, making the

process smooth and efficient,” Donato said.

The pump track officially opened to the public Thursday, July 3.

Railway unions gear up for negotiations as CPKC plans employee relocation Roughly 300 Canada Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) employees may be impacted by a planned migration as CPKC aims to transition workers from Revelstoke to Kamloops.

Mountaineer Rebecca Stephen, CPKC director of communications explained the shift to Kamloops is driven by employees themselves requesting transfers or resigning due to Revelstoke’s “cost of living and housing availability.”

“Maintaining staff levels and filling several positions has remained a persistent challenge,” Stephen wrote.

Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) union, which said the announcement came as a surprise, is working on behalf of 124 workers to mitigate the impact this move may cause.

“Our members are anxious about the move,” Christopher Monette, Teamster media relations

said. “A lot of folks there, they’ve got roots down in the community, and it’s going to be complicated to potentially uproot their lives in order to follow their careers.”

CPKC’s aim to implement the transition of employees to Kamloops by Thursday, Dec. 4 doesn’t feel achievable to TCRC, which is in negotiations with CPKC to protect union member wages and develop relocation packages.

“The scale of this move will be incredibly challenging,” TCRC Vice-President Ryan Finnson said in a press release. “Most previous relocations have not resulted in mutual agreement, ultimately being settled through arbitration.”

Housing availability and cost of living are not Revelstoke-specific challenges for employers, Monette pointed out. However, this region does have significantly less to offer in terms of rental vacancies.

While Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) does not have rental data for communities with a population under 10,000, The City of Revelstoke used CMHC’s data for Vernon and Salmon Arm to demonstrate rental vacancy rates in the region in a 2023 update to the 2018 Housing Needs and Demand Assessment. The report states an estimated 0.4 to 0.7 per cent rental vacancy rate for the region, compared to Kamloops’ estimated 1.4 per cent vacancy rate, with a healthy market within 3 per cent and 5 per cent.

CPKC pointed to two staff housing units with a total of 48 units, built in 2022 and 2023 in its Revelstoke yard as a strategy to try and support employees with housing, but did not comment on any other strategies it attempted to keep employees housed in Revelstoke, which “will remain an important operational centre and crew area for CPKC,” Stephen said.

Economic and community impact TCRC union members, oftentimes locomotive engineers, conductors and yard workers are a core part of Revelstoke’s middle class, Monette said.

Removing that workforce could divert roughly millions of dollars in wages out of Revelstoke’s economy, he theorized. Specifically, the loss of local residents could hinder businesses and organizations in the coming shoulder seasons.

“The shoulder season in our community is dependent on our locals, which could see some impact from these potential relocation plans,” Caroline Lachapelle, Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce CEO told Revelstoke Mountaineer.

“CPKC’s decision now, which came to us as a complete surprise, to relocate a major portion of that work will be extremely disruptive to our members,” Monette said.

It’s not just CPCK staff who will be relocated from Revelstoke but their partners, spouses and families as well.

“CPKC and their employees are an integral part of our community. It’s always disheartening to hear of the loss of workforce due to relocation,” LaChapelle said.

TCRC is keeping in mind this community impact as the union negotiates with CPKC. “The more a worker has ties to Revelstoke – they might have families, extended family in the community, they might have a kid going to school – the more it’s going to hurt them, this move,” Monette said.

Monette confirmed that at the moment CPKC does not have plans to move the entire Revelstoke workforce to other locations. But what that future workforce looks like won’t be clear until after negotiations and the Dec. 4 deadline.

Until then, Monette encourages Revelstoke to connect with local CPKC employees and offer support, noting the long-standing connection to the rail Revelstoke has and the generations who have worked with the former Canadian Pacific Railway and current CPKC. “The best thing to do would be to just talk to the railroaders you do know in your community.

Ask if there’s anything that can be done to help them as individuals through this very worrisome and anxious time.”

TOURISM TALKS CITY SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT ON SHORT-TERM RENTALS The City of Revelstoke is reviewing its Short-Term Rental (STR) regulations and is inviting residents to share their feedback.

CONDITIONS REPORT HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE HEADING OUT.

By Brad Harrison As we move into the winter we have seen some decent early-season snowfall through late October and early November before it dried up for a while. A warm spell in mid-November formed a widespread rain crust, reaching about 2,100–2,200 metres. That crust is now buried fairly deep, and it seems like most of what we’re dealing with now are various storm interfaces, with the occasional surface hoar layer lingering in more isolated treeline spots.

With that broader context in mind, the immediate question is how the recent storms are building on top of this structure, and what that means for travel and decision-making moving forward.

A series of warm atmospheric river events loaded with subtropical moisture and strong winds impacted the Pacific Northwest and southern B.C. through mid-December. The warmer temperatures and winds are likely to continue complicating the snowpack, especially at lower and mid elevations.

The longer-term outlook seems somewhat more promising, with signs that cooler air may eventually return to the region. However, the spell of warmth may take some time to fully dissipate.

Conditions are clearly in transition and it feels like winter is finally beginning to lean in. As snow continues to accumulate, it’s wise to take a step back and opt for more conservative terrain choices while things adjust.

Although coverage at lower elevations remains limited, riding conditions higher up have been quite good thus far, with relatively manageable avalanche risks in many areas. However, these conditions are evolving, and the approach that has worked so far might not be effective as the snowpack deepens. Clear, cold periods in mid-to-late November allowed weak layers to develop at the surface, including thin sun crusts, surface hoar and facets reported across much of western Canada. In many regions, a November rain crust was later buried and has since developed facets above it. That layer is more likely to cause problems when rain falls on an already-supportive snow surface, which is more common in lower-elevation alpine terrain. For now, it seems that the more recent layers higher in the snowpack are the main concern.

Recently, lighter snowfall has slowly built up on these weak layers. With more snow expected—and possibly intensifying—it wouldn’t take much to tip the balance towards more reactive slab conditions. As these weak layers become more deeply buried, the risk of wider propagation and remote triggering grows.

In the near term, take a cautious approach. For now, keep things small and low risk, while closely monitoring snow conditions throughout the day. Below the treeline, coverage remains sparse in many areas, with rocks, stumps and open creeks just beneath the surface. Fresh snow will make spotting these hazards more difficult, so it’s important to plan your exits and travel routes as carefully as the descent itself.

Always check your favourite weather apps and online resources — sites like Windy.com and YR.no are good places to start — and make a habit of reviewing Avalanche Canada before heading out. If you’re planning to visit a backcountry lodge or hut and will be travelling without a guide, it’s worth taking the time to read through Recommendations for Self-Guided Groups. The purpose of that document is simple: to offer some common-sense practices that help keep people safe, without taking away from the stoke we’re all chasing when we head into the mountains. Having fun and being safe aren’t mutually exclusive.

What is a Short Term Rental?

A short-term rental is when an entire home, condo, or secondary suite is rented for less than 30 days at a time for financial gain. This is different from a bed and breakfast, where individual rooms are rented within a home that is also lived in by the owner.

Don’t we already have STR regulations?

Revelstoke last updated its STR regulations in April 2022, clarifying where short-term rentals are permitted. Since then, the Province of BC introduced the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act in October 2023, giving municipalities new tools to manage short-term rentals. In response, City Council directed staff in October 2024 to review Revelstoke’s existing rules and consider potential updates.

So now what?

As part of this review, the City has developed three possible policy scenarios that explore different ways short-term rentals could be managed in the community. The City will be hosting interactive group sessions to discuss the opportunities and risks associated with each option.

Public input is a key part of this process. By Lys Morton It was a battle to the bitter end Friday, Nov. 28 at the Revelstoke Forum, with the Grizzlies and the Quesnel River Rush pushing things to a lengthy shoot-out.

Jett Patola started the game off for Revelstoke less than ten minutes into the first period even while the team was short-handed due to a high sticking penalty. The Grizzlies kept the lead going into the second period and Jake Neufeld quickly extended it less than two minutes into the period. The River Rush quickly rallied back and tied the game up with back-to-back goals before the second period was even ten minutes in. That score locked in through overtime, pushing the game to a shoot-out.

Quesnel scored the first shoot-out goal, but Neufeld was able to keep Revelstoke in the running.

The visiting team again got the upper hand, only for Jake Phillips-Watts to quickly tie things back up.

Both teams were scoreless for three rounds before the River Rush was able to score and the Grizzlies

couldn’t make the tie, ending the game 3-2.

Nearly 700 guests came out to the Revelstoke Forum to cheer on the Grizzlies and the visiting Sicamous Eagles Friday, Dec. 5. The Eagles found a spot on the score board halfway through the first period, but Neufeld tied things back up shortly after. Patola gave the Grizzlies the lead at the end of the first period, making use of a power play for the Grizzlies.

The Eagles tied things back up early in the second period only for Jaylen Forsyth to score a lead less than a minute later. It was a long grind for the rest of the period, with the Eagles scoring during a power play due to both teams serving time for a fight.

The third period kept the grind, with the Eagles gaining the lead for the first time since the start of the game. Phillips-Watts tied things back up soon after, and Connor Shymoniak netted the win for the Grizzlies in the last minute of the game, final score 5-4.

The Grizzlies hit the road Saturday, Dec. 6 to take on the Osoyoos Coyotes. The Coyotes found a way to the scoreboard early in the first period, but Neufeld once again could be counted on to even out the score. The game stayed locked in through the rest of the first period and the entirety of the second period before Osoyoos scored back-toback goals early in the third. The Grizzlies rallied hard and answered with a volley of goals from Shymoniak, Neufeld, Patola and Maguire Nicholson before Patola wrapped up the game with his third goal of the evening, earning the Grizzlies a 6-3 win.

Revelstoke Grizzlies brought it all for the home crowds Saturday, Dec. 13, beating the visiting Castlegar Rebels 5-1 in front of an audience of over 800.

Faris Meddeb put the Grizzlies on the board five minutes into the first period, and Hunter Fuoco scored his first goal of the season during a power play for the Grizzlies. Patola hit double digits with his tenth goal of the season just before the first period wrapped.

Brennen Coutts pushed the Grizzlies’ lead even farther in the second period and the score locked in 4-0 for the majority of the period until the Rebels finally got its one and only goal of the game past the defence and goalie Austin Seibel.

The third period had one more point for the Grizzlies, with Coutts netting his second goal of the game less than two minutes into the period and locking in the final score.
