- The current edition of KIT contains significant information regarding the RTAM May 2018 Annual General Meeting. Please read carefully and consider attending the AGM, putting your name forward for a position on the board of directors, volunteering for service on one of RTAM’s standing committees and/or nominating a deserving RTAM member that you know for a Distinguished Service Award. RTAM is always much more effective with input and feedback from its membership. It is the intention of RTAM to have significant AGM 2018 materials posted on the website
in advance of the May 9, 2018 date, so that members registered for AGM will have improved advance access to pertinent information.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
- Pre-AGM 2018 materials have also been sent to chapter presidents and to the website for posting. RTAM encourages its members with appropriate skill sets, interest and adequate personal time to please consider serving on the Board of Directors or a Standing Committee for a term. Reminder: according to our existing documents, all board and committee terms are of one-year in duration. We especially require new board and committee representation from Winnipeg-area members, in order to keep a rural/urban input balance going forward. Early registrations are most appreciated by RTAM in order to facilitate planning.-Theprocess of developing a submission to the Pension Benefits
ello, KIT Readers! As I finish this report for the SPRING 2018 KIT on a mid February bright and sunny Manitoba morning, it is -31 C outdoors with a windchill of -41 C. Hopefully, by the time that you actually receive this KIT, springlike weather will follow shortly.
Consider attending the AGM, putting your name forward for a position on the Board of Directors, volunteering for service on one of RTAM’s Standing Committees and/or nominating a deserving RTAM member that you know for a Distinguished Service Award.

- This RTAM operational year is moving forward with direction and centring from a Strategic Plan for the first time. The process is truly a learning process and is being evaluated as it unfolds. n
- I had asked for and had received permission for RTAM directors to attend with observer status a series of MTS regional meetings, for the purpose of information sharing. Thank you to the RTAM directors who attended these meetings in Brandon, Portage, Winnipeg and Thompson. RTAM sincerely appreciates the ongoing collaboration with The Manitoba Teachers’ Society.
- RTAM will host another Meet and Greet event with members of the Manitoba legislature on April 10, 2018. The Political Advocacy Committee, with support from the RTAM office, is coordinating this endeavour.

TRAF board has been replaced by a non- retired teacher appointee with no prior consultation with RTAM. This is an unfortunate, yet not unexpected turn of events.
Act Review, as was delegated to the Pension and Political Advocacy Committees at the January meeting, has been a challenging, yet interesting, endeavour. It has also proven to be a really valuable lesson for RTAM in information sharing between other stakeholder labour and pension groups, as well as other sources of background information. Thank you to all participating directors for their work and input on this project. RTAM was able to collaborate with The Manitoba Teachers’ Society to send a joint document submission in response to the preliminary recommendations of the Pension Benefits Act Review Commission.
- At this time, there is no additional news to report on the TRAF recommendation to the disbursal of the Restricted Surplus Fund of the Pension Adjustment Account that was accumulated through the 10-year period of Bill 45 legislation. The understanding is that the disbursal matter is still in the hands of the Treasury Board. We will post update information on the website when it is received.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Pensions
JoAnne Hoyak, Pensions chair; John Sushelnitsky, Political Advocacy chair
As predicted in an earlier article to KIT concerning the federal Bill C-27, the provincial Government of Manitoba is beginning to make moves which may change and endanger our pensions. We have always had the certainty of a known pension and it has been the foundation of our good financial planning. The addition of the COLA in the 70s , under Premier Schreyer’s government, meant that we could endure the ups and downs of inflation and recession. Following governments made changes that undermined that foundation, but now we face the possibility of an even greater threat to our defined benefits pension.Inthe place of our defined benefits, where we know what the amount of our pension will be, there is a movement, fueled by financial and corporate institutions, to move us and other pensioners to a defined contribution system, in
RTAM will be represented by the board of directors and members of the Pensions and Political Advocacy Committees.
which you know what you are contributing but you have no idea what you will be receiving. In a defined contribution set-up, your pension will depend on the stock market. The set-up could have a variety of names such as shared risk or target pensions, but the essence is the same. The responsibility has been moved from the employer, or the government, in our case, and the risk has been given directly to the employees, or we retired teachers.Thereview of the Pensions Act occurs every five years. The current government has asked a Pensions Commission to make recommendations for change. That “change” has been called “reforms” to strongly suggest that there is something wrong with the current system. We disagree. We believe that retired teachers, and other pensioners, are better served by the defined benefits system. To that end, RTAM is making a submission to the Pension commission by February 21, 2018. n

RTAM Christmas Party
n April 10, RTAM will be hosting its fifth Meet and Greet with the Members of the Legislative Assembly. The purpose of all such meetings is to have the MLAs get to know retired teachers and their organization in a social and cordial setting. When they meet later in more challenging discussions, there will be the basis for meaningful dialogue on issues that are important to us. It is important for politicians to have contact with us as people, and as voters.

In most cases, public WiFi networks are not secure, thereby allowing hackers the opportunity to gain access to your personal information if you make an online order, log into your bank account, or even just log into your email.
While not always convenient, using double verification to access your Google account or your PayPal account can enhance its security. Double verification will permit you to log in from the computer and also submit a code that's sent to your phone. It can help guard against phishing.

he Internet has become an undeniably invaluable tool that most Canadians use on a daily basis. However, with more and more people logging on to the World Wide Web, there has been an increased risk of identity theft. Characterized as when someone knowingly gains access to and utilizes personal information such as credit card numbers, social insurance numbers, or your name for their own use, it's estimated that identity theft costs the likes of banks, consumers, and credit card firms some $2.5 billion per year1.

Phishing campaigns are attempts to steal your personal information. They usually are sent via email, asking the user to click on an attachment or submit their social security number by clicking on a link. Many will disguise themselves as your bank to get this information. The bottom line – while most email platforms are good at weeding out spam, if an email looks fishy, it probably is. Just delete these emails and never give your personal information out to a suspicious source.

“Teaching is the most rewarding career that one can choose. You have the ability to have a positive impact on many lives.”
There were extensive comments about the importance of relationships with students, colleagues, parents and the community. “Teaching and leading in education is all about relationships. Building positive, compassionate, empathic relationships with those you wish to serve will assist the learning process.” Ensuring that students felt safe, accepted and respected was emphasized. “I learned that children appreciated fairness and consistency. They won’t always remember what you taught them, but they will remember how you treated them.”
Finding a Mentor Retired teachers strongly urged beginning teachers to seek out a mentor to discuss their challenges
Developing Positive Relationships
Debbie Bailey: retired teacher and administrator Calgary Board of Education Cynthia Prasow : Director, Student Experiences, Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary
Respondents wrote about what it means to be a teacher. They saw it as a challenging, rewarding and honourable career, and a role that requires qualities such as optimism, persistence, kindness, resilience, humour, determination and integrity. They wrote about the joy of being with young people and the importance of valuing every child.
Retired Teacher Survey
n 2016-2017, we contacted retired teacher organizations across Canada to request that they distribute a survey to their members. The intent of the survey was to gather the wisdom that seasoned educators had collected over their many years in schools, and to share this experience with practicing teachers, particularly those new to the profession. We received 658 completed responses representing every Canadian province and territory. As we read through the many pages of detailed responses, the following major themes emerged.

26 n RTAM KIT Spring 2018
Professionalism and the Art of Teaching
I
Many respondents saw teaching as a vocation which can be all-consuming. “Balance your passion and commitment to your career with excellent self-care. Stay grounded with a variety of personal pursuits.” The benefit of doing so is that, “ . . . you’ll be a better teacher, especially in the more challenging moments.”
Teaching is a constantly changing career that requires educators to be open to new ideas, willing to take risks, and thoughtful about implementing change. Our respondents stressed the need to be a reflective practitioner - learning from students, colleagues, parents and one’s own work. “Teachers need to understand that to be a great teacher is always a state of becoming, that they need to be . . . in constant search of ways to better help their students to learn.”
Challenges and Solutions
While passionate about their profession, retirees shared some of the challenges they faced. Respondents also provided suggestions on how to weather these challenges. “As you grow in your profession, surround yourself with positive, optimistic colleagues. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a critical eye . . . but the temptation to become jaded and cynical will be there. Stay focused on your students.”
We hope the above summary provides an indication of the richness of the comments shared by respondents. We want to thank the participating retired teacher organizations for their willingness to distribute the survey. Most importantly, we want to thank those retired teachers who took the time to complete the survey so thoughtfully and openly. n

Classrooms need to be places where children are engaged participants. “Students will learn if they perceive there is a need, that the learning is relevant to their lives and if they are interested.”
RTAM.MB.CA n 27
Work-life Balance
Creating a Space for Teaching and learning
A clear message was that all students have the potential to learn, and that they learn at different rates and in different ways. “The best teachers are those who are able to allow their students to be who they are while giving them opportunities that are varied enough for the individuality of the student.” Respondents shared a wide range of suggestions for ensuring the classroom was one in which each student could succeed. The importance of the teacher having sound curriculum knowledge, strong classroom management skills and a willingness to plan carefully for learning was emphasized.
and to celebrate their successes. “Ask for help from your fellow teachers . . . they will (think) that you are asking for help because you want to be the best you can be.” Finding the right mentor is important. “Find a teacher who exemplifies all that you admire in the teaching profession and make a connection with them.”

t 2:30 p.m. on December 6, 2017, I fell in my kitchen and knew from the ensuing pain that I had broken my hip. With great difficulty, I was able to reach the cord of my cell phone that was charging and plugged into the stove, phone my daughter, who arrived shortly after, with her husband and called 911. The adventure of a lifetime began!
I was treated effectively, efficiently and with care by the two paramedics who accompanied the ambulance, a half hour of anxiety later. They lifted me onto a stretcher, asked me questions and prepared me for the trip to the hospital. The one question we can all be prepared to answer is,
Because of workshops that have been presented in the past, I had an E.R.I.K (Emergency Response Information Kit) kit magnetized to my fridge containing an up-to-date prepared list of my medications. That is all that is needed. The hospital will not use your meds if you take them with you. E.R.I.K. also contains a health care directive that gives direction to the medical staff, if you have a life-threatening emergency. This is one of the important subjects of the upcoming Wellness Seminar on March 14, 2018, at the RTAM Office. No one knows when an emergency will occur. BE PREPARED. n
