he bitter cold of this winter has been hard on some of us living here in the city this winter, but nothing compared to those of us living here in the RTAM office where we have been living the perfect storm. The Officers have gone through the process of hiring a new Executive Director, Gordon Fardoe, whom you will be introduced to in this edition of KIT. The calm returned as the RTAM Board welcomed him and started to receive the benefit of his experience and skills learned in his former employment.

challenges of transportation, health, ageism, and other aspects of healthy ageing.TwoRTAM Board members, I and John Sushelnitsky, are members of the Manitoba Seniors' Coalition. It began in 2016 and has continued to advocate for the needs of the older adult population. Although I have mentioned this previously, I would like again to refer you to www.lifestyles55. ca , www.get yourbenefits.ca, and the RTAM website, www.rtam.mb.ca., to become aware of the many ways older adults are providing advocacy for our wide variety of needs, but also to let the world know of the many ways we, as a group, volunteer to support each other and the people in our society that are less fortunate than ourselves. In the centre pages of the free monthly newspaper, Lifestyles 55, you will read about the RTAM organization and our work to support our members. Other not-for profit organizations that are part of this Coalition also write 500 word messages advocating for specific needs. On the member driven nostalgic CJNU radio station, 93.7 on your FM dial or if you are not in the range of this station, at 725 on your MTS TV, at 10:37 a.m. and 3:37 p.m. you will hear 90 second interview radio clips with a retired teacher volunteer announcer, Grant Paterson, on “Coffee With Connie,” highlighting the reason some of these organizations exist.

You will find the RTAM committees are hard at work with all of us working to achieve the objectives we set for ourselves in the RTAM Strategic Plan. In our quest to become a Governance Board, the Officers have

As you follow the news in this edition of KIT, you will see that I had a wonderful Christmas luncheon with the Portage la Prairie Chapter that was filled with Christmas cheer amongst friends and former colleagues. It was held one day in early December on a day following and during a snowfall so I experienced a highway drive similar to the one many of you that live in Manitoba’s rural area experience in your everyday life. This province we live in offers the RTAM membership, as well as the rest of the older adult population in our province, many different societal

A month or so later, Nicole Welwood, the Member Services Coordinator, decided to leave us to follow her path to becoming a CPA. We miss her warm welcoming personality amongst us and the services she provided but wish him well in her new journey, as I am sure most of you do. Again, short staffed, we are in the process of hiring. We are thankful to our Office Administrator, Denise Bellesia, who worked hard to fill the gap and support our new Executive Director. Please bear with us as we move forward with all our new staff.

Many of our members include travel in their lifestyle. Based on the experience of other retired teacher provincial organizations, we think this will be a partnership supporting many of our members.

I caution all of you to be extraordinarily cautious with your emails and do not comply to any request for money, your social insurance number, your password or to pay the CRA, to name a few, before checking directly with the person apparently asking for help, either by phone or face to face. Banks, CRA, Bell MTS (telephone), will not ask you for personal information by email or telephone. If ever you are in doubt about an email, don’t open the email or call and confirm the request is legitimate. However, if you make a mistake and send money, no matter how badly you feel, phone the police and check with the bank or credit card company that issued the funds. They have a process to help and often money is forthcoming. These fraudulent people are professional and skilled at what they do. They are also relentless in what they do. Last Tuesday, I had three calls on the phone and an email with authentic looking letterhead from MTS asking for my email address and password or else my account would be closed because I had too many saved emails. I took the time to call MTS and have a serious technician tell me that the company would never initiate a call or email to solicit that information.

One added piece of good news. The Retired Teachers' Endowment Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation is able, this provincial 150th birthday year, to offer four $1000 awards. Applications for those of you who wish to sponsor one of your grade 12 graduating relatives are found in this KIT and on the website.

Opportunity!

As you will also see in this issue of KIT, the Bylaws and Policy Committee has done extensive work to update our documents. This work will be ongoing as, to become a Governance Board, there needs to be policies in place for staff and committees to follow to coordinate the work and follow privacy, financial, accessible and Human Rights legislation, to name a few.

s educators with great memories from parents and grandparents, we have an incredible collective recollection about our classrooms over the past decades. This would be a great time for us to record a few of our favourite memories…why I went into teaching…the time in Grade 8 that I got caught… Public Relations is considering compiling such a small inexpensive book, as our contribution to Manitoba 150.

Just write down your best story, email it to office@rtam.mb.ca labelling it “Vignettes”, You could also mail it to our office, or hand deliver to our AGM May 6,7. We have chosen this deadline to accommodate our snowbirds.

The presentation is from Vicki Russenholt of Victoria Lifeline: Vicki from Victoria Lifeline will be presenting “successful aging”, this presentation will be beneficial for individuals who may be facing some health challenges (of any age), live alone or caring for a loved one. Education and being proactive is key to our wellness, only 30% of how well we age is based on genetics, the rest is lifestyle. Two things that will help you age successfully are healthy living and knowing what “tools” are in your tool kit & be willing to use them when you need them. She will provide examples of many “tools” that are available, one of them being Victoria Lifeline.

SAFETY FOR SENIORS SEMINAR

The webinar is from Heart & Stroke: Heart & Stroke has released its 2019 Report called (Dis)connected: How unseen links are putting us at risk. The Report, for the first time, examines the complex connections that link heart conditions, stroke and vascular cognitive impairment. By analyzing available data and published studies, as well as interviews with patients and families and consumer polling, we have found many strong associations between these conditions, the challenges faced by and impact on the people experiencing them, and how the health system supports them through their journeys.

Registration will be limited to first 25 members who phone RTAM office at 204-889-3660. Registration payment will be received starting at 12:30 p.m. with presentation to start at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 per member.

RTAM STUDENT AWARD APPLICATION FORM

• Entering the first year of a post-secondary education program.

A portfolio is more than a concrete product. The portfolio development process enables students to become active and thoughtful learners about their own personal growth and skills. Portfolios are the windows into a student’s successes over time.

In 2013 the Retired Teachers’ Association of Manitoba established a permanent student award endowment fund of $50,000 with the Winnipeg foundation. Four post-secondary student awards of $500.00 were awarded initially from the RTAM Endowment Fund. For 2019, four awards of $850.00 were awarded from the revenue generated by this fund.

SUPPORT YOUR RELATIVE’S STUDENT AWARD APPLICATION:

Student Success Portfolios

If you have a relative you believe would be a candidate for the RTAM Student Award when they complete their high school education, you can get them thinking about their many skills and talents to build their own Student Success Portfolio. We believe this RTAM contribution to the preparation of the Student Award applications will facilitate your relative and add to their own self-reflection as they review what they have accomplished during their high school years.

Background

The development of a portfolio would support students, not only in applying for our Student Awards, but for other scholarships and bursaries as it helps the student to collectively organize all their accomplishments over their four years of high school.

Her book has wisdom from an earlier time, including direct quotes from her grand mother herself.

Multitasking is NOT something to strive for and/ or be proud of as this practice is hard on our heart. Secondly, focus on taking care of yourself. We are very good at taking care of others. Now, remember to take the time to care for yourself. Thirdly, we need to support one another. That support helps with the quality of our recovery.

Our Personal Wellness

The Public Relations Committee meets Brie!

§

Gentlemen, we need your suppport, too. Reminders to look after ourselves is something many of us need.

However, our heart attacks can look different. Patti Le Blanc spoke of her personal experience with her heart attack. She felt a heavy pressure on her chest as well as a very sore jaw. Fortunately, she was seen by Dr.Toleva. A very quick and precise diagnosis was made from the tests done.

One of Brie’s assignments was published online. It was a story Brie’s grand mother had told her.

t an event entitled A Conversation on Women's Heart and Brain Health on February 11, I had the priviledge of hearing Dr. Olga Toleva, an award winning International Cardiologist, speak about her research in heart health, especially women's heart health. Women have the same heart health concerns as men

Brie’s grand mother was born in Winnipeg, lived just west of Flin Flon with her husband from The Pas. Grand mother had told Brie about all beings and their connection to the earth, as well as to each other. Brie wrote this story down, titled it quite appropriately “ROOTS."

The book is beautifully written and selfillustrated. It fits so well with both our Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, and our celebration of MANITOBA150.

Ladies, we need to learn from others' experiences. First, focus on doing one thing at a time.

he RTAM Board of Directors and staff held their annual Christmas celebration again this year. Due to the cancellation of the December meeting, the event was held January 14, 2020, the day before the January Board meeting. The traditional Christmas buffet with all of the trimmings was held at the Holiday Inn Winnipeg Airport West. The food was delicious and the company was great. Music was provided by John Sushelnitsky, JoAnne Hoyak and Julian Hoyak. They performed a number of favourite rock songs

and encouraged us all to sing along. Their music was most appreciated. Pat Bowslaugh had us all participate in a Christmas game. It was a lovely evening where the directors got to meet each other’s spouses and learn more about each other in a setting other than the RTAM office. Seeing each other in a different light makes for a better understanding of each other and promotes a more collegial atmosphere while dealing with the many issues that concern RTAM members. It was a wonderful evening. §

COMMITTEE REPORTS 20 n RTAM KIT Spring 2020

On Manitoba: We are “a little island of freedom in education” in Canada because we have never had a labor disruption and we have an unusual amount of local authority. Teachers gave up the right to strike in favour of arbitration. Today, some politicians are pushing us in the direction of labour unrest because of their desire for more control and power; fewer bargaining units and less democracy with fewer school divisions, ie. less dissent.

F

Don’t worry about the fact that people will try to use your stuff for their own purposes. Governments will try to say to our organizations, ”Well, you don’t represent, because there are a couple of dissenting voices in the group. That is exactly where the MTS and MASS seem to be at the present; they have sentenced themselves to silence because they are trying to bring some dissenting voices on side, and it’s not going to happen. They have made themselves increasingly ineffective because governments know that not all members agree and some just seem to be afraid for their futures, and governments use this knowledge to their advantage to reduce dissent.

ollowing are excerpts from an interview with Dr. John R. Wiens, Dean Emeritus at the University of Manitoba. He has been a lifelong educator, serving as a teacher, counsellor, work education co-ordinator, principal, school superintendent and university professor. He spoke with the RTAM Political Advocacy Committee on November 21, 2019.

The negotiation table is one of the few places where we can legitimately, as teachers, get into conversations about things that are important to us. That is one of the most important parts of collective bargaining. That is where you can put on the table things that are important to you and they have to be heard.

When the RTAM Board gave the Political Advocacy Committee the task of monitoring developments in the Government’s K-12 Education Review, a sub-committee was set up to do so. In its research, the sub-committee became aware of a series of op-ed articles written for the Winnipeg Free Press by Dr. Wiens. The PA Committee invited Dr. Wiens to share his viewpoints on the government review. The opinions and viewpoints expressed are Mr. Wiens’ and we thank him for his candor and a very enlightening and engaging presentation. His views are food for thought, but do not express any official RTAM position at this time.

On decision-making:

With Indigenous councils, I have sat through three-hour meetings that would take us fifteen minutes but at the end of it people present have all convinced themselves that there is a decision because everyone has had equal opportunity to speak. They may have said what others have said, but they have said it out loud, and there is something about doing that which is really

On dissent:

powerful. If you say it, you are “on board.” That is what I think consultation means to Indigenous peoples.

A Conversation with Dr. John R. Wiens

The political scene right now hammers us with the idea that you have to choose sides. I refuse to do that on a partisan basis. How do I not choose sides? I focus on education, children and young people and democratic participation. There are consequences to choosing sides. If one is automatically expected to choose a position before going into a dialogue with someone, there can be no open discussion or reasonable disagreement, both of which are necessary to democracy.

On negotiations :

John Sushelnitsky, Chair, Political Advocacy

A Little Island of Freedom

On political ideology:

That Government

1. commit to the public purposes of education and public schools, and their role in renewing democracy;

6. reaffirm the importance of the role of local school boards in the governance of the public school system in Manitoba;

between public schools and First Nation Schools and school systems;

8. undertake an in-depth review of taxation policies and practices; and,

The essence of freedom of speech is that you should keep your mouth shut unless you have a thoughtful contribution to make. Some people focus on the right rather than why we think freedom of speech is important, the content of what you have to say.

3. do further study of cradle-to-grave educational tracking and the role of parents, caregivers, teachers and students in its implementation;

5. develop an annual report on education, including the Ministry of Education’s activities of the past year and plans and priorities for the next year, and rationale for same;

Here are some recommendations Dr. Wiens made in his submission to the K-12 Review Commission:

On freedom of speech:

2. encourage the school system,to explore and organize visitations, student exchanges and inter-school collaboration, such as professional development opportunities

§

The essence of freedom of speech is that you should keep your mouth shut unless you have a contributionthoughtfultomake.

– John Wiens

On Winnipeg School Divisions:

9. renew its commitment to education as an investment and to the pursuit of reducing unwarrantable inequities.

4. initiate negotiations with faculties of education, school divisions, First Nations and MTS, MSBA and MASS, to introduce and implement teacher education internship and residency programs in rural, northern and First Nation communities;

COMMITTEE REPORTS

John Wiens

If we look at Toronto, we see basically one big school division and, if we want to talk about systems where decisions are usually made far from where they are to be implemented, it is representative. So, I would say generally that we are better off with small enough school divisions where people have an opportunity to interact responsibly and responsively. But, I think that we can almost bet that Winnipeg School Divisions will disappear in its present form. The rumour is that the rivers will decide the boundaries, and that there will be four divisions in Winnipeg. On the other hand, I think this government is quite unsure with what to do with southern Manitoba, and rightfully so, as we do not need large systems to educate people and we are still feeling the reverberations of the last amalgamation.

RTAM.MB.CA n 21

7. re-create the inter-organizational advisory committee on education finance with expanded representation to regularly review the education funding regime;

n February 13, the RTAM Wellness Advocacy and Student Awards committee hosted a Seminar entitled Wills, Power of Attorney, Health Directive to help prevent Elder Abuse presented by Sharon Tod. The 22 attendees enjoyed the presentation. Each person obtained a folder with a copy of the power point presentation as well as a copy of the GetYour Benefitsbooklet and the EmergencyResponse InformationKit{E.R.I.K}.

Prior to joining the staff of MTS, Fullan Kolton’s career included that of school principal, education consultant and university instructor.

On December 31, 2018, after 63 years of activity, the members felt it was time to bring the Association to a close, due to declining membership. The scholarship plan has been established in The Winnipeg Foundation and interested persons may contribute to it as a gift, bequest or memorial. This fund is the lasting legacy of the The Schoolmasters’ Wives Association to deserving students in the Faculty of Education.

The WivesSchoolmasters’Association

Arrangements were made to hold a general first meeting on January 31, 1955, in the Free Press Board Room on Carlton Street. Over 80 replies were received after an advertisement was posted. Keen evidence of support was shown when 75 women braved minus 30 degree weather and climbed a long flight of stairs to attend. That evening, “The Winnipeg Schoolmasters Wives’ Association” was launched.Membership grew most rapidly in the 1960’s and 70’s. One of their most important goals was to provide scholarships for students with high scholastic achievement and promising teaching qualities. The first scholarship of $100 was awarded in the year 1958-59. This has grown to three $1000 scholarships being awarded yearly. Scholarships were funded by projects such as coffee, dinner and card parties, teas, and craft sales. One big fund raiser was a SMWA cookbook, Treats for Teachers.

The organization’s project and social activity groups (bowling, bridge, crafts, gourmet dinners and a book club) cemented our participation and friendships in the Schoolmasters’ Wives Association through the years.

In 1978 the fund, with The Winnipeg Foundation, as the administrator of the trust, established scholarships to be awarded in perpetuity. From 1958 to 2018 one hundred and fifty-four scholarships have been awarded for a total of $74,900. Our continued interest in education resulted in one of the most ambitious undertakings of the organization: "Seminar ‘75 Dilemmas in Modern Education,” a contribution to celebrate International Womens’ Year. Three key-note speakers, a panel discussion, an audiovisual presentation and a collage and a television interview were features of the seminar.

n 1954, a group of ladies whose husbands were educators (Schoolmasters) met informally on several occasions to discuss the possibility of organizing a teachers wives’ association for all areas in the city. These women were interested in community service work, educational concerns, social opportunities and camaraderie.
