GOOD FOOD CENTER | Spring 2017 | Arch100B Studio, UC Berkeley CED Good Food is a public center in San Fransisco on 11th street and Folsom in th SoMa District that combines all of the programs of food production, consumption, and education. The programs include a market hall/urban room, an urban test farm, non-profit research facility, comissary kitchens, and an event space. Radially organized columns create spaces with few walls where people can make visual connections to all parts of the programs from one level to the other giving people a greater awareness of food procsses. Variation from small to big skylights in the roof allow for more sun to enter in at the north and east while shading more of the south and west sides.

Structure Multiple HSS columns connected by steel beams are arranged radially so that they are denser in the center and move farther apart as they go out.

Circulation Main circulation is located in the central atrium that also allows light to enter down into each floor.

CHAPEL IN THE HILLS | Fall 2017 | Arch100C Studio, UC Berkeley CED Located in the upper hills of the MountainView Cemetary in Oakland, the chapel site merges the ethereal and earthly and the distinct backgrounds of many people who visit into one meditative gathering space. The large voids in the concrete make the chapel a beacon from the hill at night.

The H-shape plan hides the entrance from view of the parking lot allowing people to take the site in as a whole and then meet in the intersection or just have a time to pause. The tent engages with the concrete form through tension acheived through a wire frame and rope. The canopy creates an interior/exterior space for transition and activity space.

An interactive and educational sculpture of the visual pathway that has been abstracted formally and materially. As a class we began with a series of sketch models studying how to construct cones intersecting with cubes. That brought us to the point of deciding to represent the visual pathway in the skull with a series of vertical layers.

From initial schematic design we developed a set of construction documents and researched materials to use that would be long lasting, durable and within our budget. The final model is constructed using a strut and node system of wood frames and hdpe panels connected by metal hardware and covered by a perforated stainless steal skin.

SUN ANGLES GALLERY | Spring 2017 | Arch140, UC Berkeley CED Team: Alex Still, Jane Wu, Sam Jiang, Robin Tajingwa Designing for performance and beauty for an art gallery in Arches National Park. My team decided to create angle skylights and overhangs at both entrances to diffuse daylight and help people’s eyes transition into a dimmer space. The skylights are hidden from the exterior and interior by a flat roof that acts as thermal mass and allows the project to read as a simple box from the outside.

STRUCTURE AS ART AND PLAY | Fall 2017 | Arch 150, UC Berkeley CED Team: Erik Jurisch, Robin Tajingwa, Sviatlana Zoryna

The basic philosophy of our design demonstrates the strength of polyhedrons while creating occupiable space for children to play on the second level. Our initial intention was to explore the geometry of space-frames and derive a tetrahedron, which was occupiable. We started by drawing in SAP and physically modeling the tetrahedrons to see how they would need to be braced. Once we viewed a model produced by Professor Carlo Sequins which demonstrates a polyhedron approaching the fourth dimension we started internally bracing our design but with occupancy in mind

We remodeled our original, asymmetric design and simplified it to an internally-braced polyhedron. By adding smaller members between triangulated points within the polyhedron we were able to make a structural second level which is aligned to lateral forces. Each internal connection was triangulated by finding the closest point to each vertex of each triangular prism. This was done to strengthen the design by adding minimal number of members. When choosing which joints to connect, we were very conscious of the inevitable space formed for the children and the ease of constructability for the parents. With three different member sizes and the most complicated pin connection is seven members coming together, we found a structurally sound design into an elegant form.

MOUNTAIN VIEW HOUSING Summer 2017 Van Meter Williams Pollack During my summer internship I finished a working model for a modular affordable housing project for VMWP to show to their client and use to study different design ideas. The units are for the homeless going through rehabilitation. The housing includes about 100 units, an outdoor courtyard, gathering spaces, psychological services, parking garage, outdoor garden, and ground floor cafe. The roof is covered by a pv trellis system.
