It’s Holiday Countdown Time BEING thankful and giving thanks is a great American tradition. There are not many countries that actually make a holiday dedicated to just giving thanks and being gracious. It is a wonderful thing that all of us embrace and honor. So, in the tradition of this great day coming up, I would like to thank all of our readers and advertisers for supporting our magazine and ventures and helping us continue our work since we started back in 1981. RETAILERS are most thankful for this time of the year when everyone heads into full swing for the holiday season. This season is expected to be spread longer as shoppers are metering their shopping habits in light of inflation and uncertainty. Our sales have been unpredictable over the last quarter past and we all hope to recoup business as we finish the last two months of the year. AS entrepreneurs it is our nature to look ahead and forecast as best as we can what the new year will bring. Many are hoping that our government will refocus on what is important to us and not the ruling class. If real efforts are made to reign in inflation and stabilize our economy we can look forward to a bright new year. Each of us has to make plans for our businesses to succeed and we’re thankful to live in a free

OUR colleagues in this industry, more than others, represent a diverse group of backgrounds and ethnicity and we all share the same freedoms and dreams. It is always rewarding and gratifying to work alongside such a fine group of dedicated and hard working people. THE independent retailers of this country are what makes it great. It is reassuring to see local towns stressing the importance of “shopping local” and keeping their communities vitalized. Our businesses are important cornerstones in every town and city and need to be appreciated and frequented by local residents. IN the meantime, we’ve dug our trenches all year to be ready for this holiday season. Now is the time to maximize our profit potential. Shoppers will be out spending and it is up to each of us to entice them into our businesses and share the wealth. RETAILING NEWS Ikea Goes Electric

SOME people love the Ikea style for furniture and home décor, others not so much. The company has recently announced that all of their deliveries will be made by electric vehicles by 2025 as part of keeping with their target as the world’s top furniture brand to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the next several years. THE company said that in some cities they are already fully electric for their fleets and many others were working hard to build the infrastructure that is needed to complete the transition. THE move is to become climate positive by 2030 and announced that they have currently reduced their carbon emissions 6% from pre-pandemic levels despite record sales. INGKA Group, the owner of most worldwide Ikea stores, already produces more renewable energy than it consumers, having invested almost $3B USD on it.

About The 2022 Holiday Shopping Season

HALLOWEEN has just ended and retailers around the world are hot on the trail for starting holiday sales promotions. Many have already started as you may have noticed holiday specials even before Halloween ended, which is a sign of the times that retailers are trying to get a jump on the season which is sure to have its ups-and-downs. CONSUMER demand has been pushing for early sales and promotions. With the economy in a whirlwind, consumers are looking to spread out their purchasing and shopping budgets which will increase the length of time they are out shopping. During this time, they will be sniffing out bargains and trying hard to stretch their money. MANY shoppers are anxious to get their holiday shopping earlier as they fear that inflation will eat away at their spending power as it gradually increases every month. Others are worried that there will be supply chain problems and shortages on the products that they most want. So this has retailers rolling out deals and specials earlier than usual to pick up the business from these eager consumers. RETAILERS have been adapting to this new stretched out buying season. While some traditional shoppers may wait for the traditional Thanksgiving Day sales and Black Friday specials, others are racing to get their shopping done earlier. Now with covid taking a back seat (funny how that just disappeared!) they are more eager than ever to embrace pre-pandemic shopping behavior and the in-person experiences. STATISTICS show that this years’ holiday buying season will have over 45% of shoppers doing physical shopping in traditional stores, especially around Thanksgiving time. This is a massive shift of preference over the last two years and will be a boom to traditional physical retailers who have long waited the return of shoppers to their venues. RETAILERS have been adjusting their promotion strategies and marketing calendars to meet this changing consumer demand. For most it means starting sales earlier and understanding that sales and value is high on the list of consumers demands. MANY shoppers are prioritizing their gift buying and will cut back on other things to ensure that they have the money to spend for holiday gifts. Over 62% of shoppers said that gift giving is important to them and they will find a way to make it happen for their family and friends. This includes spending a little less in some cases and also breaking out their credit cards and taking advantage of extended pay plans.

Taking Your Story National 2. Give the reporter background details to expand the story. Newspaper releases can be more detailed than television or radio ones. A health reporter may want to know if key individuals in your organization have been published in medical journals and will want to see background articles on that topic to lend credibility to the story. Business editors may want detailed financial reports or annual reports from previous years. 3. Avoid superlatives. The word is overdone. And don’t think that you need to say you are the only one doing such and such. Reporters say that people often push too hard and use hysterical language, which makes the journalists naturally suspicious. 4. Be accurate. Don’t make the story more than it is – you’ll soon be found out and will only get away with it once. 5. Give all of the details that you can to save the reporter some steps. Betsy Eisele, who handles public relations for the Stevens Cancer Center at Scripps Memorial Hospitals in La Jolla, did that when she sent a

health reporter a release about women with breast cancer having children after their diagnosis. The reporter said the query was perfect because it: • told about a nurse specialist in the field who would be coming to the Scripps Cancer Symposium • included a local source who was doing the same work • was a timely idea that had not been written about extensively • offered a new way of looking at something • suggested a San Diego woman who had been through breast cancer & became pregnant • included background articles on the topic in professional journals, a flyer on the symposium, and a letter that outlined other interesting topics at the symposium • was sent 2 months ahead of time 6. Be familiar with the format of the newspaper, radio show, or TV show to which you are sending your idea. Maria Velasquez, host of “Saturday Morning” on KFMB-TV in San Diego, told of a recent experience in which a public relations professional contacted her about a segment idea. Velasquez agreed to do it. A few days later she received a message on her voice mail that said the client was available for an interview at 9:00am Thursday, so plan to bring a camera.

A cue card that lists major points to cover, a date, or an important phone number is permissible, but don’t take other notes on camera with you. 5. If you ask in advance, important dates and phone numbers can be put on the teleprompter. 6. Speak in a medium-paced speed. Too fast is nerve-racking; too slow is boring. 7. Talk as you would to a client, not as though you are giving a speech. Avoid technical language and jargon.

8. Avoid space-fillers like “uh” and “um.” In mock interviews, have someone sound a buzzer every time you revert to these crutches so that you can realize how often you use them. 9. Nail the topic to the wall with succinct, clear messages. “This is a new product that has been shown to...” If the viewer has that problem, they perk up. And publicists still enjoy the company of a good elephant. Locals Take on Elephant at Area Restaurant Who eats more salad – a 2,000-pound elephant or 20 hungry Tampa Bay residents? Allie’s, a new chain of restaurants from the Marriott Corporation, discovered the answer during the Great Elephant Challenge, a saladeating competition at their restaurant at a Florida mall.

The event was the brainchild of Gary Bitner Public Relations. Since Allie’s features a food bar with lots of salad, Lisa Warren of the Bitner agency thought a salad-eating contest was appropriate. She tied in charitable groups and a local radio station, Q-105, to ensure publicity success. Two 10-person teams competed with Moxie the elephant for a $1,000 donation to charity. The 2 challenger teams were recruited by the Q-105 radio station disc jockeys and represented the Lowry Park Zoo and the Boys & Girls Club of Tampa.
