FROM THE PUBLISHER Welcome to

our 38th Anniversary Issue of Retailers Forum Magazine! It is truly amazing how quickly time has flown by since our first issue was published in 1981.

THERE are so many memories that we have of our humble beginnings when we started with $100 and a lot of dreams and hard work to get our operation off the ground. Having worked at Forum Publishing for the last 38-years it is truly one of the most unique experiences of my life. And one that I am extremely grateful of. WHEN I first handed out the first copy of our magazine, then called Flea Market Forum to local vendors in the New York area I had no idea of what the future would bring or even if we’d make it to the next issue with our shoestring financing. Now, here we are 456 issues (months) later, still publishing and proudly serving our industry! OUR Anniversary is very special to me and I want to share it with our readers old and new as well as our dedicated advertisers who make every issue possible. I often think back to the early years when we started, pre-computer, prefax machine when everything was done by hand. That included laying out the magazines, typing labels for mailing and hand sorting mail bags to delivery to the posy office. THERE was nothing easy back in the “old days” and technology has been both

a blessing and a curse in both the publishing as well as the retailing industry. OVER the 38 years I have been fortunate to have worked with some of the best staff in the publishing world, the finest printers and tradesmen. Many of the high school students who interned with us decades ago have gone onto successful careers and started their own families and businesses. All that have passed through our doors have felt the entrepreneurial spirit that pervades our offices through this day. Our company has been the epitome of the American dream that was started with $100 and a great deal of determination. ALONG the way our company went from starting in a studio apartment in the Bronx, New York to a one bedroom apartment in Sunnyside, queens to a commercial basement in Great Neck, Long Island to our first “nice’” office in Syosset, Long Island. In 1987 we purchased our current office building in Centerport, Long Island where we’ve been for the last 32 years. ALONG this journey I have learned a great deal and continue to do so. Life holds great opportunity for us all - we just need to pay attention when it shows itself. Thank you everyone!

Anniversary

‘d never thought that back when I was 22-years-old just starting to publish Forum that it would be a run lasting over three decades and one that I can honestly say I still enjoy as much today, 38 years later, as when I started! Now, 38 years and 456 issues later, we celebrate embarking on our 39th year servicing the wholesale/retail industry. Reflecting back over the years is always sentimental for me as I remember the birth of my daughter in 1983 and the 7-days a week working with her crib in a corner of my office. I recall moving from our basement office in Great Neck to our first modern offices in Syosset, the birth of my son in 1987 and then purchasing our own office building in Centerport, where we remain today. They say that time flies, and it certainly does. My daughter’s now 35, with a newborn, while my son’s 32. Being the first trade magazine sets a high bar. In many instances we have shaped the marketplace by exploring and presenting new opportunities to our clients. When we started there was no such thing as a computer or fax machine (wow, am I old!). Now, technology changes constantly and we must all embrace and harness its power to stay ahead of the curve. We take our responsibility of guiding the market very seriously. As we start our 39th year in the industry I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to our business over the years and help us build what we like to think is the best trade magazine in the country. Labor Department Set To Boost OT Threshold

THIS is a gigantic news story that will effect many retailers and businesses across the United States. Workers who make less than about $35,000 a year will be eligible for overtime pay undre a long-awaited proposal the Labor Department is rumored to unveil soon. THE department is proposing a new regilation to update time-and-a-half pay requirements for all hours worked beyond a 40-hour work week. The ruling would raise the salary threshold under which workers are automatically entitled to overtime wages from about $24,000, but wouldn’t go to the $47,000 mark that was pushed by the Obama administration in the past. That proposal was immediately blocked by a federal judge in a Texas court. THE new rule would significantly expand the number of workers eligible for overtime pay. Of course it may be challenged in court, however worker advocates complain that the proposal doesn’t go far enough. Business groups around the country are worried about the new payroll costs that would be associated with this ruling. THE current administration’s approach to the overtime question has been watches closely by businesses in all industries. There have already been many lawsuits filed in class action suits for overtime pay from workers at some very large companies and corporations. THE DOL has sent their proposals to the white house office of Management and Budget and regulators want to get it finalized before the 2020 election so it will be harder to undo if a Democrat wins the white house. The proposed rule’s roll out has been frequently delayed since it was first released over two years ago and it will most likely have more delays and lawsuits along the way. A new rule like this would be the first update to federal overtime pay requirements in 15 years. Meanwhile, small businesses and employers in areas where the cost of living is already lower have complained that boosting overtime requirements will force them to cut jobs and hours to help meet payroll costs. Some lawyers are claiming that the DOL does not have the authority to enact such a ruling and claim it is a job killer.

NYC Flagship Stores Closing

FOR big brand retailers having their flagship store on Fifth Avenue or Madison Avenue in New York City was almost a requirement for them. Lately however so many things in retailing have been changing that several iconic retailers have been closing down their flagship stores. This certainly is not a promising sign for our industry when Lord and Taylor announces closing their New York location or most recently Tommy Hilfiger announcing the closing of theirs on Fifth Avenue. HILFIGER’S 22,000 square foot store is yet another loss to the famed Manhattan shopping street. And to make matters worse the brand also annunced that they will be closing its Collins Avenue Store in Miami as well. This is happening at a time when retailing is becoming more of an online experience than a physical shopping one. So maybe you want to believe from some of the other industry magazines that you need to “create instore experiences” to stay alive. Honestly we have more of a challenge coming than having a clown blowing up balloons at your store lobby is going to fix. When the deep-pocketed retailers like Hilfiger, Toys R Us, Ralph Lauren, Henri Bendel and others are having troubles it becomes increasingly obvious that many of us need to pivot more, and quickly into online marketing to our shoppers. NOW is the time to spruce up, promote and prepare your website, social media marketing!

That pool of young prospective employees will soon shrink while the number of available mature workers will increase.

Whoever is hired, you’ll need to offer employees more then an hourly wage. A specialty store depends on forging personal relationships with its clients. For those to endure, shoppers expect

to see familiar faces. To establish and retain those relationships, you must do whatever you can, within reason, to retain staff. That could include offering a benefit package attractive enough to make the job in the store a career, or offering star employees a profit-sharing plan or limited interest in the store’s long-term performance.
