finally upon us and now we start the retailer’s favorite season. Just about anything is truly possible from October through the holiday season. EVERY retailer anxious waits and watches as the season starts to unfold, hoping it will be their biggest ever. Hoping that all the planning and hard work to get ready for the season will pay off. IT is predicted that we should have a strong sales season this year as consumer confidence and spending is stable and at good levels. FOR many of us, Halloween is a major boost for our sales and kicks off the season. There are so many products that you can add onto your sales floor that will capitalize on the Halloween theme. Be sure that you are stocking these items as they will increase your bottom line. Putting some seasonal impulse items next to your register is the key. THIS is the month to introduce the lay-a-way program to your customers. Start your shoppers thinking about Christmas and encourage them to start shopping and holding items at your store. Post signs that you are now starting lay-a-aways. And don’t charge for this service. You will sell more merchandise by making this service free and accessible to all shoppers.
MAKE sure that you are accepting credit and debit cards. It is surprising that some businesses do not and that’s a big mistake. Rates are low and there are plenty of processors who will give you free equipment as well. Buyers will spend more when they can use plastic. ABOVE all, make sure that your selling space is festive and reflects each sales season. Start up with Halloween decorations, then move into Thanksgiving which then goes ti Christmas. If your space and your staff is in holiday mode then your shoppers will engage. Go that extra mile to make your space fun and inviting and include window and wall graphics and displays to attract new shoppers as well. WHEN I train my trade show staff for operating our booths at the shows we do I explain that we have only a limited time to make sales and every minute counts. When the show ends that window closes. When it comes to your sales staff at your store it is the same situation. You have a limited number of days to sell and make the most money you can for the season. When Christmas day comes the window’s closed!

Toys “R” Us Returns
THE iconic chain store is setting its sights on the big return it is planning. But the big hurdle that its new owners, Tru Kids Brands, may have is getting vendors to supply items as they are fresh out of bankruptcy. THE company announced that it will be opening their first two stores in Texas and New Jersey in time for the holiday season. Tru Kids will be partnering on the new stores with b8ta, a startup thats built both its own physical storefronts as well as a software platform to help retailers build experiential concepts. The two companies are hoping to open more stores throughout 2020. There are also plans in the works to relaunch the Toys “R” Us website, though an exact start date has not yet been announced. THIS new partnership with b8ta is being positioned as a selling point as Tru Kids looks to win back the trust of vendors who were burned by Toys “R” Us’s decline after their bankruptcy filing in September 2017. The next year a group of vendors, led by Crayola, filed a claim that they were still owed hundreds of millions of dollars by Toys “R” Us. A settlement agreement was made and everyone moved along. Now it is the job of the company to convince vendors that they will succeed in the relaunch. SO far there are a couple of dozen vendors who have signed on to sell to the two new retail stores and both partners are on roadshows trying to sign up more vendors over the next few weeks. They’re also tasked with convincing vendors that the new shops will be different than the dusty, downtrodden stores that the stores had turned into during their downfall. IT is expected that the new partnership will pull on b8ta’s ability to be agile in moving merchandise with a robust supply chain and online offerings. Their software will power the stores allowing the collection of robust data for the merchant. THE new stores will have modern updated designs, new features and even feature event spaces to hold birthday parties and celebrations for the shoppers. The new units will be between 6,500 and 10,000 square feet as opposed to the old stores that averaged around 40,000 square feet. Walmart Wants High Schoolers
THE nation’s largest employer with a workforce of around 1.5 million people announced a plan to expand a college education perk for high school seniors to join their workforce. WALMART said fewer than 25,000 of its workers are high school students and they want to encourage more to join the ranks. The program will be offering flexible schedules, free ACT and SAT pre courses, up to seven hours of free college credit through their new program as well as a debt-free college degree through the Live Better U program the company offers. THIS program is a great way to make college accessible as well as provide jobs to high schoolers. Who needs Bernie or Elizabeth’s freebies...Walmart’s got this covered!

The numbers need to be so thorough that you can use them as a tool for convincing others to invest in your business, and for measuring performance against expectations. Your only option is to look to outside sources of funding. This search for money will take some time as you search for lenders confident enough in you and your store concept to risk an investment in it.
Forget About Institutional Sources of Financing This is your store, so it’s entirely your responsibility to raise the financing. The same is true with contractors and other service providers. Instead of one lump payment, they may be willing to structure a payment schedule that works with your budget. You won’t know what kind of flexibility is available to you from these “partners” until you ask.
CONSIDER RECRUITING INVESTORS They do exist, and once you have a business plan on paper, you can make a pitch for investors. Advertise or spread the word. Usually they want equity, a share of the business and profits based on their contribution to start-up funding. For providing 10% of that cost, an in-
vestor may expect a payback plus 10% of profits. Think of this as selling shares in the business. Such an arrangement has legal implications that require the involvement of an attorney.

INSTITUTIONAL LENDERS Good advice to the contrary, you may decide it’s worth investigating your chances for a business loan from a local lending institution. This may prove an exercise in futility, especially if the store is your first stab at self-employment. You may have good personal credit, and a good relationship with your local loan officer, but it
may not be enough to get the loan you need. Make your case, in person and on paper. If all else fails and you need the funding, consider asking for a personally guaranteed loan. It’s not the best situation, but if the store really matters, you’ll have little trouble living with the commitment.
Also check in with the area office of the Small Business Administration and see if you qualify for one of its guaranteed loans. The application process is thorough, and funds are limited. But you won’t know if you qualify until you apply.
