extreme. Based on the stories shared with our counselors, many of the women we serve had husbands who were abusive or violent, which may explain the higher divorce rate among trafficked women. In other words, the tragic picture is that many of these women may have finally managed to leave their abusive husbands only to be exploited in another abusive situation. Of the divorced women we served, the vast majority (91%) had children. Based on the anecdotal information from the counselors, being divorced and with a child left these women in more vulnerable and desperate for work.
